US President Bill Clinton, his wife Hillary, daughter Chelsea and his
mother-in-law visited the majestic former home of China's emperors and the Great Wall which once kept out marauding hordes - the U.S. leader getting in some world class sight-seeing as he wound down after the Sino-US summit. Built to keep out invaders, the wall on Sunday played host to the presidential party for one and a half hours of steep climbs and breathtaking views. Work on building the wall first began between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C., and was kept up during a period of warring kingdoms when individual emperors fearing attacks by Huns andother tribes erected massive defenses along their borders. The Clintons were taken to the less well-known Mutianyu section about 50 kilometres (30 miles) northeast of Beijing. The section, first built at the beginning of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), was renovated in 1983 and finally opened to the public in 1988.
