2. SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Whitaker, Acting Attorney General:
"The Department of Justice under the president has given you more resources and more tools than you've ever had and will continue to do that. One of President Trump’s first executive orders through Attorney General Sessions was to back the blue and to enhance the safety of law enforcement officers all over this country. We have embraced that role. I am going to continue that goal. We're going to be faithful to it every day.
Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker returned to his home state of Iowa Wednesday to speak at a conference on elder abuse and meet with prosecutors and state local law enforcers.
Whitaker told the officials the Trump administration is “a law and order administration” that will always back the police.
He told an audience at the conference on elder abuse that he will continue efforts to protect senior citizens from falling prey to scam artists.
The visit came as the Justice Department released an internal legal opinion supporting the legality of Whitaker's appointment as acting attorney general as Democrats press the case that President Donald Trump violated the law and Constitution by making Whitaker the country's chief law enforcement officer.
