"It goes without saying this moment demands a sense of urgency. It goes without saying this moment demands leadership, not just from the national level, not just from the state level, but substantively from the local level as well."
"We are responding to this crisis in real time. There's a shelter I just visited that is a makeshift shelter that tomorrow is no longer a shelter. It's a construction site. There are bus loads of folks coming that ICE is bringing to some of these shelter facilities not necessarily knowing where they're going to be tomorrow or the next day. But I'll tell you this, San Diego and folks in this region: They're going to end up out on the streets and sidewalks. People are going to be out on the streets and sidewalks. They're going to be in the emergency rooms. So, we're going to have to address this issue."
"I believe in borders. I believe in strong borders. But I also believe that we, the collective we, have created this moment, because society becomes how we behave. We are our behavior. This moment exists because of our collective decisions. So, we have a responsibility at this moment to address this moment."
"I came down here to seek first to understand, before I'm understood, to understand the complexities and nuances of the challenges that we face that many of you down here on a daily basis face and have for decades here in this region but acutely will be facing over the course of the next days, weeks and months as we address some of the more vexing and challenging issues that exist and persist here south of the border."
California's incoming governor says officials at all levels of government need to have a "sense of urgency" in addressing the issue of migrants approaching and amassing at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Gavin Newsom spoke to reporters in San Diego on Thursday. The Democratic governor-elect was in the city to tour an immigration facility and meet with advocates who are working with migrants seeing asylum.
Newsom's visit came days after U.S. Border Patrol agents used tear gas at the San Diego-Tijuana border to repel a crowd of migrants that included angry rock-throwers and barefoot, crying children.
"It goes without saying this moment demands a sense of urgency," Newsom said at a news conference. "It goes without saying this moment demands leadership, not just from the national level, not just from the state level, but substantively from the local level as well."
