1. Trailer clip-"The Handmaid's Tale"
New York, 4 June 2019
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Elisabeth Moss, actress,
"I mean, we do seem to be in that period in the show or in the book before Gilead, when things sort of slowly started to be stripped away. But there are other places in the world where it already is Gilead. And these rights have already been taken away from people, and I think that's something that people forget; we're very focused on our country—which I understand, we should be as Americans, it's obviously important to us—but at the same time, I think it's important to take a global view as well and look at other places where these things are already happening."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Bradley Whitford, actor,
"Repressive regimes and repressive ideologies start with repressing women and attacking vulnerable populations."
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Madeline Brewer, actress,
"A lot of people are like, 'Wow, the show is really mirroring what's happening in the world.' And I'm like, it seems more like the world is mirroring what's happening in the show, which is a kind of even more frightening."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Bradley Whitford, actor,
"If you told me—honestly, if you told me two years ago that we would be separating children from families and then forgetting about it and doing publicity for television shows like that's not happening in my country, I would have told you you were a left-wing hysteric."
6. SOUNDBITE (English), Madeline Brewer, actress, on the proposed Georgia abortion law and the political divide in America:
"The United States right now is—this administration, the cabinet has very many like fundamentalist Christian people. And that's kind of the same theocratic society that 'The Handmaid's Tale' is built on. So when you take your religious views and enforce them on the people of your country, then you get something kind of like Gilead. Not saying that we're headed there, I'm just saying that we have to keep our eyes open and be aware and refuse to go back—refuse to have the rights of women and people of color and any marginalized community—LGBTQ community—rolled back. We just have to stay awake and refuse to let it happen because they will try to do it."
