SOT-Harvey: "The other additional tests that I'm aware of is neuropathology

and pulmonary. (Reporter off cam: Has the family received the body yet?)

No they have not. (Reporter off cam: when will it happen?) I do not know."

SOT-Harvey: " All they simply have to do is select a private mortuary to

handle the services and then the mortuary will present a document to us

signed by the family. And on that basis of that document we will release the

remains to them and they will take it to their facility and prepare him for whatever

funeral services the family has selected. (Reporter off cam: When is the

earliest his body can be released?) It's available for release now. We

start releasing bodies officially at 6pm (PST) this evening."

SOT-Harvey: "(Reporter off cam: Mr. Harvey, any indication of usage of

Demerol, the painkiller?) I can't comment on any specific drugs until the

completion of the toxicology testing."

Michael Jackson's autopsy is being performed Friday (6/26) although it will be weeks before the LA County coroner's office will be able to release a cause of death.

Assistant Chief of Coroner Ed Winter spoke to reporters Friday morning. (6/ 26)

He said Jackson's body has been examined and the autopsy will start shortly.

He said toxicology tests will be run but it will take six to eight weeks to get results.

Winter would not speculate on any cause of death and said it is slim any results would be released after the autopsy is completed. That is expected to take several hours.

The 50 year old King of Pop died yesterday (6/25) after being rushed to the hospital. It was reported he suffered cardiac arrest and was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his home.

When asked about possible pain killer use, Winter said the only reports he had about that was from the media.

It has been reported that Jackson was taking painkillers for a back injury, but that has not been confirmed.

Once the autopsy is completed, Jackson's body will be released to his family.

Jackson had been rehearsing for a comeback tour. He was scheduled for a series of concerts starting in London next month.

SUPERS:

Ed Winter

Assistant Chief Coroner

VIDEO INFO:

SOT-Winter: "At this point, we have not, and will not, determine cause of death. The autopsy will probably last several hours - and we will be out to give an update later on, probably sometime after twelve o'clock."

SOT-Winter: "We'll be performing toxicology tests and an extensive exam. And it could take up to six to eight weeks before we have the final results."

SOT-Winter: "Probably, the cause of death is going to be deferred until we get the results of all the tests. However we did want to let people know that the exam is being conducted this morning."

not have at this point but are unable to release due to the nature of the

investigation. I know there has been intense public interest in the

whereabouts of the physician. I will tell you that Robbery Homicide Division

detectives have been in contact with the physician and his representatives

and have scheduled an interview that will take place shortly. We do not consider

him to be uncooperative at this time. We think that he will assist without,

ah, we think that he will assist us in coming to the truth of facts of this

case. I know that many of you had other people in your organizations that

covered the coroner's press conference. You know that their preliminary

autopsy reports revealed no obvious evidence of foul play but it will be

several weeks before toxicology comes back and you'll obviously, you know,

those are key results that will steer the nature of this investigation. So

even though I can't give you everything that you want, I can tell you that

the investigation is progressing well. There are no major road blocks to it,

other than the time issue and the public's extreme desire to know things that I

can't know yet."
