STORYLINE:

Hundreds of thousands packed Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach on Wednesday for New Year's celebrations.

Revellers watched on from the world famous beach as a fireworks display lit up the bay.

Fireworks were launched from barges moored 350 metres away from the beach.

Brazilians first started celebrating the New Year on Copacabana beach in the 1960s, partying all night until the sun came up on January 1.

By the early 1970s the crowd had grown so much, swelled by thousands of tourists, that the local government decided to make the party an official date in the city's calendar, with the addition of fireworks and musical performers.

It is now the biggest new year's celebration in Brazil.
