ACADEMY AWARDS ROLL OUT RED CARPET FOR MOST DIVERSE LINE-UP EVER

Once an evening of backslapping and merrymaking within the narrow confines of Hollywood, the Academy Awards this time look like a United Nations exercise in diversity.

The 79th annual Oscars Sunday feature their most ethnically varied lineup ever, with stars and stories that reflect the growing multiculturalism taking root around the globe.

Competing for best picture was Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel," a sweeping ensemble drama. The film's cast ranges from A-listers such as Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett to comparative unknowns

Adriana Barraza from Mexico and Rinko Kikuchi from Japan, who both earned supporting-actress nominations for "Babel."

Also in the running were Stephen Frears' classy British saga "The Queen," a portrait of the royal family in crisis, and Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language war tale "Letters From Iwo Jima."

Those films joined two idiosyncratic American stories nominated for best picture, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' road comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" and Martin Scorsese's crime epic "The Departed."

Though set among the distinctive cops and mobsters of Boston, "The Departed" had a global connection - it was based on the Hong Kong crime thriller "Infernal Affairs."

Gray clouds floated over the red carpet as limousines delivered guests to the Kodak Theatre, but the hint of rain did not diminish the enthusiasm of spectators as the likes of Spanish actress Penelope Cruz, British actress Rachel Weisz, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal, Scottish actor James McAvoy, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Al and Tipper Gore walked the carpet.

Of the 20 acting nominees, five were black, two were Hispanic and one was Asian, while only two Americans _ Eastwood and Scorsese - were among the five best-director contenders.

With a Directors Guild of America award and other top film honors behind him, Scorsese was considered a shoo-in to earn the directing Oscar, a prize that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

There were clear front-runners in all four acting categories, as well: Forest Whitaker as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" and Mirren for the lead-acting trophies, Eddie Murphy and Hudson as soul singers in "Dreamgirls" for the supporting honors.

The best-picture race was up for grabs, though, with all five films in the running but many Oscar watchers generally figuring it was a three-way race among "Babel," "The Departed" and "Little Miss Sunshine."

Organizers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hope the suspense of the wide-open best-picture category will help offset moviegoers' relative lack of interest in the competing films.

TV ratings for the Oscars tend to be lower when fewer people have seen the top nominees. Collectively, the five best-picture nominees had drawn a total domestic theatrical audience of about 38.5 million people, about a third the number of fans who have gone to see the contenders in recent peak years when such blockbusters as "Gladiator" or "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" have won.

So this play was going nowhere when I came to it and my producers came to it and Geoffrey came to it. So it's made me more open-minded to the idea that there may be masterpieces, wonderful stories that are lying neglected and that the system doesn't always deliver to you the best stuff that's out there."

WINNERS REACT BACKSTAGE

The King's Speech" was crowned best picture Sunday at an Academy Awards ceremony as precise as a state coronation. The monarchy drama won an expected four Oscars, and predictable favorites claimed acting honors.

Colin Firth as stammering British ruler George VI in "The King's Speech" earned the best-actor prize, while Natalie Portman won best actress as a delusional ballerina in "Black Swan."

Firth said he was planning to cook a lot to relax after the exhilaration of a successful awards season.

"I don't think I'm very good at it but I'm going to inflict my cooking on anybody within range. I tend to find that that's a very good way to decompress. I'll probably be the only one eating it," he said.

Backstage in the press room, Portman described how the long days of shooting kept her from dwelling on the film's dark mood.

"I was literally just falling into bed and waking up and going back to set. I think that sort of pace helped me stay so focused for the part. Yeah, I didn't have too many crazy dreams. I'm pretty good at shutting off. This one was a little harder to shake, just the whole mood of the whole movie was so intense. It stayed with me a little longer than usual," she said.

The boxing drama "The Fighter" captured both supporting-acting honors, for Christian Bale as a boxer-turned-drug-abuser and Melissa Leo as a boxing clan's domineering matriarch.

Network censors bleeped Leo for dropping the F-word during her speech.

Backstage, she jokingly conceded it was "probably a very inappropriate place to use that particular word."

Bale joked that he was keeping his language clean.

"I missed the F-bomb. But you know what? I've you know - I've laid down many of them before. I think I know what it was all about."

"The King's Speech" director Tom Hooper described the on-set camaraderie between stars Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth and said finding the story shook his faith in Hollywood's ability to find good scripts.

"It's made me more open-minded to the idea that there may be masterpieces, wonderful stories that are lying neglected and that the system doesn't always deliver to you the best stuff that's out there," he said.

Hooper said he didn't think he'd be going to bed for a while.

RIDLEY. EDGERTON, LIU AND SAWYERS REFRESHINGLY EARTHBOUND AT STUDENT ACADEMY AWARDS

Some actors are cannily looking to the future.

Joel Edgerton decided to be a presenter at Thursday's (22 SEPT. 2016) Student Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles in order to meet new talent and secure his next paychecks.

"I'm thinking 10 years ahead and I'm, like, 'I need a job.'" he said half-joking.

"I'm a smart guy. I'm like looking to the future. No, I'm seriously looking to the future, because where I started was no film school. There was a film school. But like whether you make it up as you go along, which we did. Or you go to, like, an established film school, it's taking baby steps and dipping your toe into something that feels a little bit unknown. And I think it's an exciting thing, and I think some of the most exciting filmmakers -- to be honest, I feel like the people I want to side up with are people who are starting out. It's a gamble. As an actor, you need to be partnered up with people that make you look good. But it's sometimes a great gamble to work with young filmmakers. And I have a real affinity to that because I remember what it was like to be young filmmaker, and wanting people to kind of partner up with us."

The awards have been established by the Academy as a platform for emerging global talent 43 years ago.

Actor Parker Sawyers who also presented at the event said it was important to discover talent early.

"We know there are incredible alumni, people from the winners of yesteryear. So, it's an exciting time for the future of film -- especially as an actor, I get to see people and meet people and present an award to people I hopefully will be working with in the future," he said.

Some Student Academy Award winners went on to be showbiz powerhouses: Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump"), Bob Saget ("Full House"), Spike Lee ("Do the Right Thing"), Trey Parker ("South Park") and John Lasseter ("Toy Story") to name just a few.

Lucy Liu said she felt the time was right to participate in the ceremony, with Hollywood now openly discussing the lack of diversity in the film industry, and making moves to close gender, racial and other gaps.

"I think the timing worked out perfectly. I think there's a great deal of awareness and inclusion in terms of diversity and gender," she said.

"And we're seeing a lot of that tonight. I love that -- I'm presenting the Foreign Film, so I think there's something great about that. And Animation, which I love, too. So the combination of it is perfect."

Winners represented not only the United States, but also Germany, Israel, Poland, China, Greece, Lebanon and other countries.

OSCAR VETERANS ON WHAT THEY'VE LEARNED

Many of this year's nominees have traveled the Oscar road before.

At this month's annual luncheon, we asked them to share how their previous experiences have changed how they've approached award season this year.

"Boy it's hard to say," said supporting actress nominee Sally Field ("Lincoln"). "I mean, the Oscars that I won before, that I was nominated before, last time was in the 80's when I was so much younger, and they were important to me, those films were important to me, Norma was hugely important to me, and now I'm not young and I'm this age and time has marched along, and you know, the whole 'Lincoln' journey has been unbelievably important to me. That it culminates in so much recognition is fabulous and so that feels wonderful to me."

Bollywood extravaganza descended on Madrid.

The 17th edition of the IIFA Awards brought an array of Bollywood A-listers who attended the first part of the ceremony on Friday (24 June 2016) night in the Spanish capital.

Indian stars converged on the red carpet to honor the technical categories of the awards.

One of the hosts of the evening Manish Paul said he cannot pick a favorite among the nominees.

"I think all are my favourites. It's a family, you can't choose one," he said.

Perennial baddie Gulshan Grover wasn't nominated in the Performance in a Negative Role category but he made an appearance to cheer for the other on-screen villains.

"I feel it requires a very good actor to play the part of a villain, the part of a bad man because your screen time is less and your deeds are very predictable."

Actor and martial artists Tiger Shroff broke out some of his signature dance moves for the cameras, while actor Boman Irani said to the press his suit was tailored without him even being present in the room.

Meanwhile actress Freida Pinto said that there's a definite awareness in Hollywood of the Indian talent on the market.

"I definitely think they have, they are definitely waking up, but I don't think it is "they are waking up now" I think everybody was always privy of how much talent there was in India," she said.

Whereas American actress Nargis Fakhri admitted she got a lot of jobs in Bollywood based on her work in comedy "Spy."

The International Indian Film Academy Awards has been giving out trophies to its brightest stars in cities across the globe. Previous host cities for the IIFAs included Kuala Lumpur, Tampa Bay, Macau, Singapore, Toronto, Dubai and London.

The gala will resume Saturday night when the creative awards will be given in 13 categories.

Director Jon M. Chu is praising the film academy's recent push for a more diverse membership -- but says it's just one part of a larger shift in Hollywood.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 683 new members to join the organization this week -- saying its invitees were 46 percent female and 41 percent minority. Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said it was part of a push to diversify its largely white, male membership.

Chu, who most recently directed the magic-themed thriller "Now You See Me 2," directed two of the invitees -- RZA and Byung-hun Lee -- in 2013's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation."

"I'm really excited that the Academy took very serious, real, quick change. I mean that's a pretty dramatic shift. But it's going to take those moves," Chu said. "And there's still a lot to go when you look at the actual numbers. ... It's sort of symbolic in a certain way. But the real work is going to be done in the actual stories that we tell, and the actual actors that we start to get to know and can expose," he said. While the countdown for the Oscar ceremony is on, celebrities on the red carpet for the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica last night ( Saturday Feb 23 ) had a taster of things to come.

Indie film maker John Waters was there and compared the two events:

"Well, I like the Oscars, too. But this is the hip version. " he said.

"This is the one where people they don't care if they aren't gonna win. There's just as much anxiety here, because everybody wants to win this, too. And the old-school thing was that if you win the Spirits you won't win the Oscars, but that isn't even true anymore. We'll see."

Tips for Oscar preparations were freely shared:

"That's a difficult one. I don't know. Relax. Talk a little drink before." says actress Hanne Jacobson, and husband Mads Mikkelsen adds:"Two. Two drinks."

But Bruce Cohen who produced "Silver Linings Playbook"does not agree:

"I recommend not drinking a lot before you get in the car, because I think you do want to at least make it through the red carpet.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards will be presented Sunday night in 24 categories at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles from 830p to about midnight EST, hosted by Seth MacFarlane and televised live on ABC.

"Argo" is the current best picture favorite, but "Lincoln" may actually win the most Oscars because of its strength in actor,directing and craft categories.

FILM ACADEMY ANNOUNCES ANNUAL GOVERNORS AWARDS RECIPIENTS

Actor Jackie Chan, film editor Anne V. Coates, casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentarian Frederick Wiseman are getting honorary Academy Awards.

The film academy announced Thursday (1 SEPT. 2016) that the four industry veterans will receive Oscar statuettes at the annual Governors Awards ceremony in November.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs described the recipients as "true pioneers and legends in their crafts."

Chan has written, directed, produced and starred in dozens of films, dazzling with his stunts and martial arts. His most recent release is "Skiptrace" with Johnny Knoxville; past credits include the "Rush Hour" series with Chris Tucker, "The Karate Kid" reboot and voicing a monkey in the animated "Kung-Fu Panda" films.

Wiseman started making documentaries in 1967. His most recent was last year's "In Jackson Heights," about a community in Queens, New York, considered one of the most culturally diverse in the U.S.

The eighth annual Governors Awards will be presented Nov. 12.

Recent recipients include Spike Lee, Debbie Reynolds and Gena Rowlands last year.

ACTORS GATHER FOR SAG WARM-UP TO THE ACADEMY AWARDS

A puzzling Academy Awards season will sort itself out a bit more on Sunday with the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where top performers gather to honor their own in what often is a prelude for who'll go home with an Oscar.

Among nominees for the 19th annual guild awards are Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones for the Civil War epic "Lincoln"; Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway for the Victor Hugo musical adaptation "Les Miserables"; and Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Oscar recipient Robert De Niro for the oddball romance "Silver Linings Playbook."

Actors were buzzing about the awards, the films and their TV shows on the SAG red carpet. Alex Baldwin talked about shooting the final episode of '30 Rock.' "It was very tough. Gloria Ruben, who played Elizabeth Kickly in 'Lincoln,' said the cast knew they were part of something special. There was such respect and such a reverence; a lot of play and a lot of fun but such kind of a reverence about what we were doing."

Honors from the actors union, next weekend's Directors Guild of America Awards and Saturday night's Producers Guild of America Awards _ whose top honor went to "Argo" _ typically help to establish clear favorites for the Oscars.

'Argo' cast member John Goodman says he's tickled about the wins. "It was such a surprise the last few things and I think it's well deserved but it's just a ball. I'm just enjoying it."

But Oscar night on Feb. 24 looks more uncertain this time after some top directing prospects, including Ben Affleck for "Argo" and Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty," missed out on nominations. Both films were nominated for best picture, but a movie rarely wins the top Oscar if its director is not also in the running.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" would seem the Oscar favorite with 12 nominations. Yet "Argo" and Affleck were surprise best-drama and director winners at the Golden Globes, and then there's Saturday's Producers Guild win for "Argo," leaving the Oscar race looking like anybody's guess.

The Screen Actors Guild honors at least should help to establish solid front-runners for the stars. All four of the guild's individual acting winners often go on to receive the same prizes at the Academy Awards.

The guild also presents an award for overall cast performance, its equivalent of a best-picture honor. The nominees are "Argo," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Les Miserables," "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

Yet the cast prize has a spotty record at predicting the eventual best-picture recipient at the Oscars. Only eight of 17 times since the guild added the category has the cast winner gone on to take the best-picture Oscar. "The Help" won the guild's cast prize last year, while Oscar voters named "The Artist" as best picture.

Such past guild cast winners as "The Birdcage," "Gosford Park" and "Inglourious Basterds" also failed to take the top Oscar.

The show features nine television categories, as well.

Receiving the guild's life-achievement award is Dick Van Dyke, who presented the same prize last year to his "The Dick Van Dyke Show" co-star, Mary Tyler Moore. On the red carpet Van Dyke talked about the milestone. "Well, and it really is kind of a pinnacle of a career and you have to live long enough I think. I'm so tickled. I'm excited and I'm the only one who knows he's going to win."

Van Dyke's award will have been presented by his 1960s sitcom's creator and co-star, Carl Reiner, and Alec Baldwin.

FILM ACADEMY INVITES 683 NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN

Six months after announcing intentions to double the number of female and minority members in its ranks by 2020, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 683 new members to join the organization.

The academy says its invitees are 46 percent female, 41 percent minority and represent 59 countries.

Should all of the invitees accept, the new class would make the academy's overall membership 27 percent female and 11 percent non-white, up from 25 percent and 8 percent respectively.

Tom Hiddleston, America Ferrera, John Boyega and Rachel McAdams, Emma Watson, Michael B. Jordan and Freida Pinto are among the actors invited to membership.

The 2016 group of invitees is the academy's largest ever and more than doubles last year's class, said President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

She said the academy has worked for several years to diversify its largely white, male membership. Last year's #OscarsSoWhite movement amplified that conversation.

The academy announced sweeping changes to its recruitment and voting practices in January after a second straight year of all-white acting nominees for the Academy Awards.

In March, the organization added three new members to its board of governors and appointed six minority members to other leadership positions.

OSCAR CARPET RUSHED OUT IN ADVANCE OF EXPECTED STORMS

About a day earlier than motion-picture academy officials announced it was likely to happen, the red carpet was rolled out onto a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard Tuesday night (25 FEB. 2014) for the 86th Annual Academy Awards -- and with less than an hour's notice to media outlets.

So why the rush?

Blame what the National Weather Service warned would be two storms, the second being "the strongest the area has experienced in about three years."

Forecasters are predicting above-average rainfall, gusty winds, maybe even thunderstorms -- nothing for many parts of the planet, but a big deal for Los Angeles, where mild-and-sunny days are the norm.

The 86th Annual Academy Awards is set for Sunday 2 March, for which the weather service forecasts partly cloudy conditions and only 10 percent chance of rain.

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS SAYS HE'LL HOST OSCARS IN 2015

Neil Patrick Harris is going for an awards-show trifecta, set to host the 2015 Oscars after four hosting stints at Broadway's Tony Awards and two at TV's Primetime Emmy Awards.

"To be asked to follow in the footsteps of Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal, Ellen DeGeneres, and everyone else who had the great fortune of hosting is a bucket list dream come true," Harris said in a statement Wednesday released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 41-year-old entertainer announced his Oscar gig online Wednesday (15 OCT. 2014). He posted a video on Twitter of him on the phone saying, "I'm in," then showing a close-up of his bucket list and circling "Host the Oscars."

Academy Awards co-producer Neil Meron confirmed the casting on Twitter. He and co-producer Craig Zadan said they've known Harris "his entire adult life."

"We have watched him explode as a great performer in feature films, television and stage," the producing pair said in the academy statement. "To work with him on the Oscars is the perfect storm, all of his resources and talent coming together on a global stage."

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs called Harris "the consummate entertainer."

The Tony Awards telecast won Emmys all four years that Harris hosted and helped produce the program.

It's been a busy week for the multi-hyphenate star, who released his book, "Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography," on Tuesday. He also appears in the nation's top movie, "Gone Girl."

He wrapped his hit series "How I Met Your Mother" earlier this year and won a Tony Award for his starring role in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."

The 87th Academy Awards are set for Feb. 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

OSCARS ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET

Four days before the Academy Awards, it's time to roll.

Workers rolled out massive sections of red carpet along Hollywood Boulevard on Wednesday (18 FEB. 2015) in preparation for the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday.

After laying down the carpet early in the morning, workers immediately got to work using tools to link carpet sections together so nothing trips up nervous nominees before they make it inside for the ceremony.

Actors, filmmakers, publicists and other guests will pose for photographers and stroll down the carpet starting at around 2 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday, and the 87th Academy Awards will begin at 5:30 p.m. (0130 GMT, 23 Feb.)

REDMAYNE, CUMBERBATCH, KEATON, WITHERSPOON READY FOR BAFTAS

Real-life friends and awards-season rivals Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch are going head-to-head at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, an event that aims to rival the Oscars for glamour, if not for weather.

The air was chilly but the sun shone as the stars walked the red carpet outside London's Royal Opera House. The awards ceremony is British cinema's glitziest event, and an important stop for Hollywood awards hopefuls.

Julianne Moore, Steve Carell, Michael Keaton and Reese Witherspoon were among the American actors to walk the red carpet.

British stars attending included actors Jack O'Connell, Imelda Staunton and Rosamund Pike, former soccer star David Beckham - and, getting some of the loudest cheers, scientist Stephen Hawking, subject of nominated biopic "The Theory of Everything."

Redmayne and Cumberbatch are both best-actor nominees for playing scientific heroes - Redmayne as Hawking, and Cumberbatch as code-cracking mathematician Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game."

Redmayne beat Cumberbatch to a Golden Globe last month, and bookmakers have made him the strong favorite to take a BAFTA. The pair will face off again at Hollywood's Academy Awards on Feb. 22.

Redmayne said the film's success had been "mind-blowing," but insisted he hadn't been changed by the awards-season whirlwind.

"You know what? I try not to think about it all too much. Really, for me, it's about putting one foot in front of the other," he said.

"This film was such a high stakes game for all of us because we cared so much about what the Hawkings thought that frankly everything has been a gift since they enjoyed the film. So no, I'm just trying to enjoy it - everyone says 'enjoy it,' and I am, so at the moment that's good," he smiled.

Sunday's prizes, known as BAFTAs, have a strong record of anticipating Oscars success. British talent has been especially well represented in Hollywood this year, led by multiple awards nominations for "The Theory of Everything" and "The Imitation Game."

"It means a hell of a lot. It's great for the film, which is great for Alan Turing, which is incredibly important for all those involved in the film," said Cumberbatch.

"I know the Turing family are very much rooting for us all tonight and that means a great deal, as does their support for the entire film and everything that has happened with it. It's exciting, it's really exciting," he added.

One British star who wasn't nominated for a BAFTA or Academy Award was David Oyelowo, despite wowing critics and audiences with his portrayal of Martin Luther Jr. in civil rights drama "Selma."

"I wish David Oyelowo was amongst them, as he deserves to be - it's the one bitter note of the evening," noted Cumberbatch.

Awards organizers say "Selma" was overlooked because it arrived in Britain too late for the 6,500 academy members to see it. The film's tally of just two Oscar nominations helped spark a debate about Hollywood's lack of diversity.

The British academy also overlooked Mike Leigh's artist biopic "Mr. Turner" in the major categories, despite critical praise and a Cannes best-actor prize for star Timothy Spall.

But Leigh has not been forgotten. He is due to receive a lifetime honor, the British Academy Fellowship, for a body of films blending social realism and sly humor.

However, bookmakers say Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" - a coming-of-age story filmed over 12 years - is the favorite to take the best-picture BAFTA and secure its place as an Oscars front-runner.

"We never expected any of this ever in a million years," said "Boyhood" actress Patricia Arquette. "Really, we didn't know if anybody would go and see this movie, so it's been so meaningful to us because the love we made it with has been met and returned to us."

"The Grand Budapest Hotel," Wes Anderson's candy-colored comedy about a chaotic central European hostelry, leads the race with 11 nominations, including best picture and best director.

"The Theory of Everything," directed by James Marsh, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's showbiz satire "Birdman" each have 10 nominations, while Morten Tyldum's "The Imitation Game" has nine. "Boyhood" and Damien Chazelle's drumming drama "Whiplash" have with five nominations apiece.

The best-picture nominees are "Birdman," ''Boyhood," ''The Grand Budapest Hotel," ''The Imitation Game" and "The Theory of Everything."

"It was a bold experiment in filmmaking and challenging and I loved it," said "Birdman" star Michael Keaton on the red carpet.

"I loved doing it, I loved making it and the result is so exciting and people are really appreciating it - really, really appreciating it," he added.

The best-actor contest pits Keaton against Redmayne, Cumberbatch and Ralph Fiennes for "Grand Budapest Hotel," plus Jake Gyllenhaal for "Nightcrawler."

Best-actress contenders are bookies' favorite Julianne Moore for "Still Alice," Felicity Jones for "The Theory of Everything," Amy Adams for "Big Eyes," Reese Witherspoon for "Wild" and Rosamund Pike for "Gone Girl."

Pike, nominated for playing chillingly perfect Amy in David Fincher's thriller, said she would be delighted to win, but was prepared to lose.

"As an actor you are trained to come to terms with disappointment, because the early stages of an actor's career is rife with disappointment. So, I'm practiced," she smiled.

NILE RODGERS HONORED AT LOS ANGELES SOIREE

Legendary music producer and guitarist Nile Rodgers was the man of the hour Tuesday (3 FEB. 2015) at the eighth annual Grammy Week event in Los Angeles.

The Producers and Engineers Wing of The Recording Academy honored the three-time Grammy-winner with a star-studded gala at the famed Village Recording Studios.

"I'm just overwhelmed," said the 62-year-old recording artist.

"I'm not a good award guy because I don't do music for awards so when things like this happen I get sort of, I absolutely get teary-eyed. I get overwhelmed."

Rodgers has collaborated with artists like David Bowie, Duran Duran, Avicii and Daft Punk on their smash hit "Get Lucky."

He's also a co-founding member and the lead guitarist of the rock-disco band Chic. Rodgers is releasing Chic's first new album in two decades thanks to a recently discovered box of the band's unreleased demos.

"It's Chic," he said of the new music.

"Not only is it classic, the very first single - everybody that was on the very first recording, every single person that was singing on that record, including Luther Vandross, everybody is on that single. It was like something I pulled out I was like 'oh my god! Look at this!' And it's killing. I played it for Pharrell on an airplane a couple of weeks ago. We were headed to Dubai and his exact words, well I can't say his exact words, but it went something like 'Nile, put that blank out right away. Put it out tonight!.'"

The first single from the record is due out in March and the LP is expected to drop in June.

Music industry VIPs and artists including Aloe Blacc and "Weird Al" Yankovic were on hand to celebrate Rodgers.

Yankovic, who had a pop culture moment this year with the chart-topping "Mandatory Fun," was also nominated for a best comedy album Grammy. But the comedian isn't holding his breath for a trophy on Sunday.

"Oh my goodness. I would say I've been studying the Grammys for a while, this might be the toughest comedy category ever in terms of competition. For crying out loud, Patton Oswalt, a dear friend of mine, Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, Louis C.K. Amazing right? So I've got my fingers crossed, but I'm not counting on anything," he said.

He said he was shocked when last year's winner Kathy Griffin did not receive a nomination.

"It was a tough category and Kathy won last year and she gets nominated year after year. Not even a nomination this year after winning last year. So I saw her right after the nominations came out and I gave her my condolences because it's kind of sad. I mean she obviously would have been nominated in a less crowded year, but this year's just been nuts."

Songwriter Diane Warren, on the other hand, is feeling pretty good about her Oscar odds.

"I bet on myself you know," she said about her best original song nomination for "Grateful" featured in "Beyond the Lights."

"Lucky seven maybe? You know. I mean I think being nominated, I mean not to be cliche, but you know being nominated is amazing. Think of all the songs in movies every year. You know there's so many times that I think I'm going to get nominated and I don't. This time I didn't think I had a chance and I woke up in the morning and here it is."

But the Golden Globe winner is not pleased with her collaborator, singer Rita Ora. Warren says Ora should be trying harder to promote their Oscar-nominated song.

"In all honesty it would be great to not be the only one out there promoting this. Because it's a huge opportunity," she explained.

"I mean she's going to sing for two billion people. Like when is the next time that's going to happen? Probably not, you know, it doesn't happen to that many...it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing that you sing for the Oscars, no matter who you are. So yeah, it would be nice (if she showed more support) and I think it's a hit record you know. Hopefully, maybe it will change and maybe they'll� and maybe when it wins, if it wins."

Ora will perform "Grateful" at the 87th Academy Awards on Feb. 22.

The song is up against "Everything Is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie," "Glory" from "Selma," "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from "Glen Campbell � I'll Be Me" and "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again."

The Grammy Awards will air live Feb. 8 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

MIRREN TO BECOME A BAFTA FELLOW

On Sunday 16 February, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) will award Britush actress Dame Helen Mirren with the Fellowship at the British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London.

Awarded every year, the Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed by the Academy upon an individual in recognition of "an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games."

In an interview on Friday (14 February) Mirren said she felt "sbsolutely thrilled, proud, excited," to be the recipient of the accolade:

She went on to say it would be nice to go to the BAFTA's knowing she had an award in the bag, so to speak.

"It's really nice to go to this sort of ceremony knowing you've won. None of those kind of nerves. Knowing that you've got to make a speech, so and I never imagined that I would, I always thought of myself as a bit of an outsider really, sort of the naughty girl. So I feel like the naughty girl suddenly made prefect. Got my prefect badge for good behavior. "

Mirren is no stranger to winning awards, with four BAFTA wins, and the recipient of an Academy Award, three Golden Globes and four Emmy Awards. The actress is therefore well versed in making awards speeches, and with prior warning you might think she would have one prepared for Sunday.

"No," she says. "I did think about it though. It's very difficult because you think 'my god I've got to talk about my whole life not only my whole life, what movies mean, what movies meant to me,what they mean to all of us, and do it all in two minutes'. So I thought about it quite a long time, 'What do I want to talk about?' and then I realized what I wanted to talk about and I'm not going to tell you."

Mirren's career began with roles in films such as Michael Powell's Age of Consent and O Lucky Man! However her breakthrough role came in John Mackenzie's The Long Good Friday.

She continued to make films throughout the 80s including Excaliber, Cal and The Madness of King George, for which her performance was both BAFTA and Oscar-nominated.

She is the only actor to have taken on the role of both Queen Elizabeth I and II on the screen, and it was her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen that saw her awarded with a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actress.

The actress says she has no idea what she'll be wearing to teh award show yet, but went on to describe the kind of red carpet looks she likes.

"I love that story of gold lame just dripping, when women look like they're just molded out of gold or silver," she said." I love that sort of look. I thought Lupita, is it Lupita, the girl from 'Twelve Years' and she will look spectacular tonight. Of course she's got an amazing figure, and that always helps. But she looked amazing I thought at the, what was it the Sag awards, last time I saw her. And that was very architectural and very simple I thought, that was very very beautiful. I like it when people look comfortable, if they look like they're being held in and they're terrified that bits are gin to fall out, and they can only stand like this, I don't like that. I like it when people look loose and easy. "

Fellows previously honoured for their work in film include Elizabeth Taylor, Anthony Hopkins, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, and Martin Scorsese. Sir Alan Parker received the accolade at last year's Film Awards.

The British Academy Film Awards will take place on 16 February at The Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

Stephen Fry will be returning to host this year's ceremony, which will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One in the UK and in all major territories around the world.

DEGENERES TO RETURN AS OSCAR HOST

Comic and daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres was picked to host the Academy Awards for the second time.

Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced DeGeneres' selection Friday.
