USE OF CLIPS FROM ACADEMY AWARD PRESENTATIONS

The Annual Academy Awards telecast is copyrighted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Any rebroadcast or other use of the program or any of its contents, except in accordance with the following, is prohibited.

In accordance with fair use provisions of copyright law, broadcast news programs and services may excerpt portions of the Academy Awards telecast for rebroadcast during the seven days following the telecast (up to, and including, Sunday), subject to the following conditions:

up to three minutes may be used within the period ending the first day (Monday) following the telecast,

one minute, not separate from the three minutes in (a), above, may be used within the period of the second through seventh days (Tuesday through Sunday) following the telecast,

the material may be used only for news reporting purposes directly related to the Awards Presentation as an event,

any display, exhibition or performance of the material must be accompanied by the legend "Clip Courtesy A.M.P.A.S.� ____" (year supplied as appropriate), and

only clips approved by the Academy are used,

the clips are used only in news broadcasts and only in conjunction with stories concerning the deceased in such news broadcasts,

the clips are used only within a 72-hour period immediately following announcement of death,

any display, exhibition or performance of the material must be accompanied by the legend "Clip Courtesy A.M.P.A.S.� ____" (year supplied as appropriate),

the approved obituary clip(s) shall not exceed 60 seconds in total running time, and

those requesting the clips agree to obtain, at their own expense, the consent of all other persons appearing in the clips and all guild or other clearances that might be required.

All those rebroadcasting any clip(s) from any Academy Awards telecasts hereby agree to indemnify the Academy, its governors, officers, members, agents, employees and representatives, and to save and hold the Academy and each of them harmless from, and to defend the Academy and each of them against, any liability and expense, including attorneys' fees, arising out of any claim whatsoever which may be brought or based upon the use of the clip(s).

Permission shall not be granted for the use of clips from the Academy Awards telecast for non-news ventures, except under unusual circumstances, and on a case-by-case basis. An exception, if granted, shall not be considered precedential.

This policy shall apply also to requests for permission to use the audio portions of Academy Awards presentations.

I think that it was probably a sign that the government has recognized a need for a body like that that they need to work closely with to find a way to find a way to get films financed with government cooperation. I'm optimistic at the moment."

"We shot the Geoffrey and Colin stuff first and so when she arrived, she arrived into this incredibly strong bond between them. The story of how this film came to be is a classic example of how that's not the case. This play failed to be produced as a fringe theater play, as a fringe theater play. So this play was going nowhere when I came to it and my producers came to it and Geoffrey came to it. So it's made me more open-minded to the idea that there may be masterpieces, wonderful stories that are lying neglected and that the system doesn't always deliver to you the best stuff that's out there."

The King's Speech" was crowned best picture Sunday at an Academy Awards ceremony as precise as a state coronation. The monarchy drama won an expected four Oscars, and predictable favorites claimed acting honors.

Colin Firth as stammering British ruler George VI in "The King's Speech" earned the best-actor prize, while Natalie Portman won best actress as a delusional ballerina in "Black Swan."

Firth said he was planning to cook a lot to relax after the exhilaration of a successful awards season.

"I don't think I'm very good at it but I'm going to inflict my cooking on anybody within range. I tend to find that that's a very good way to decompress. I'll probably be the only one eating it," he said.

Backstage in the press room, Portman described how the long days of shooting kept her from dwelling on the film's dark mood.

"I was literally just falling into bed and waking up and going back to set. I think that sort of pace helped me stay so focused for the part. Yeah, I didn't have too many crazy dreams. I'm pretty good at shutting off. This one was a little harder to shake, just the whole mood of the whole movie was so intense. It stayed with me a little longer than usual," she said.

The boxing drama "The Fighter" captured both supporting-acting honors, for Christian Bale as a boxer-turned-drug-abuser and Melissa Leo as a boxing clan's domineering matriarch.

Network censors bleeped Leo for dropping the F-word during her speech.

Backstage, she jokingly conceded it was "probably a very inappropriate place to use that particular word."

Bale joked that he was keeping his language clean.

"I missed the F-bomb. But you know what? I've you know - I've laid down many of them before. I think I know what it was all about."

"The King's Speech" director Tom Hooper described the on-set camaraderie between stars Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth and said finding the story shook his faith in Hollywood's ability to find good scripts.

"It's made me more open-minded to the idea that there may be masterpieces, wonderful stories that are lying neglected and that the system doesn't always deliver to you the best stuff that's out there," he said.

Hooper said he didn't think he'd be going to bed for a while.

STORYLINE:

The countdown has well and truly begun in Hollywood for Sunday's 79th Academy Awards.

On Saturday, residents and tourists alike looked on as the iconic Oscar statutes arrived at the venue for the awards ceremony.

The much coveted golden statues got their own special walk down the red carpet as Hollywood prepares for the big event.

50 students from Inner-City Filmmakers (ICF), a training and film industry job development programme, carried the Oscar statuettes of the 79th Academy Awards to the Kodak Theatre.

The Oscars will be kept backstage overnight under heavy security, until they are presented at the awards on Sunday.

One of the fifty young people who took part, film student Maurice Griffin told Associated Press TV "It is like I am holding on to like my dream literally, you know hopefully in the future all of us will be able to win our own Oscars award."

For Ivan Rubio, meanwhile it had been an experience he would have never believed possible.

"It's great, I came here when I was five-years old from another country. To stand here, like, I would have never dreamed it" he said.

This year, there is no clear winner in the best-picture category, and organisers are hoping that a classic Hollywood cliffhanger will keep TV audiences tuned in right up to the finale.

Hollywood's biggest party has lost some of its lustre for television viewers at home over the last decade, with TV ratings on a general

decline.

Critics lay the blame on the judging panel, which has often picked smaller movies in key Oscar categories, that have been seen by less people.

This means, the critics maintain, that television viewers are less involved in the outcome.

Tourists are still keen however to get a glimpse of the action and on Saturday they were rubbing shoulders with media crews from around the world.

John Neville, a British visitor, said he would have liked to spend another night in Los Angeles in order to see the stars.

He said: "Pity we are not here another night, it would have been quite fun."

The biggest night of the year for stars of the screen and the men behind the top films of 1969, as Hollywood presents the annual Academy Awards - the coveted "Oscars".

"It is so much fun. The first time we came in 1970, it (Academy Awards) was at the Music Centre. We walked right into the bleachers (benches), sat down and we were the only ones there at 10 o'clock in the morning the day of the awards. So it has evolved into this. STORYLINE:

Final preparations were being made in Hollywood on Sunday for the Academy Awards ceremony later.

The finishing touches were all but in place on the red carpet as screen stars and their fans get ready for the 78th Academy Awards.

They were setting the stage for a parade of stars on Sunday evening outside the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.

The red carpet, gold, fresh paint and lights were transforming this busy street into a glamorous runway.

Workers were cleaning the famous red-carpeted causeway and bleachers were in place where fans will crowd around the red carpet to greet their favourite Hollywood celebrities.

Those golden Oscar statues lining the carpet were under wraps on Sunday morning.

Workers will put a final touch up of gold paint on them before the the big show.

Outside the red carpet area fans were already lining up as the sun rose over Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday morning.

The scene is a familiar one, but this year Oscar is paying tribute to a different crop of movies.

This year's nominees for best picture are not the usual Hollywood blockbuster fare, but they're drawing the attention of movie fans, film critics and the Academy Awards.

So it's a triumph of art over commerce that low-budget, fierce dramas such as the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain", the ensemble tale "Crash", the Truman Capote story "Capote" and the Edward R. Murrow Saga "Good Night, and Good Luck" are the awards darlings this time, over the escapist blockbusters that usually dominate.

STORYLINE:

Hours before the 79th annual Academy Awards begin in Hollywood, Los Angeles on Sunday evening, fans are lining up to get a glimpse of their favourite celebrity and root for the movies they hope will win best picture.

Competing for best picture was Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel," a sweeping ensemble drama.

Also in the running were Stephen Frears' British saga "The Queen," a portrait of the royal family in crisis, and Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language war tale "Letters From Iwo Jima."

Those films joined two idiosyncratic American stories nominated for best picture, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' road comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" and Martin Scorsese's crime epic "The Departed."

There were clear front-runners in the acting categories: Forest Whitaker as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" and Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II in "The Queen" for the lead-acting trophies.

Fans waiting to catch a glimpse of their stars were divided over who they wanted to win the best picture gong.

"I really love Babel and the Departed," Nicole Smith told AP Television.

However, Lynn Kirkpatrick was rooting for "Little Miss Sunshine, the underdog."

"I think it's kind of a quirky little cute film and I think it would be awesome if something more independent got chosen," she told AP Television.

STORYLINE

Preparations for this year's Oscar ceremony started early on Sunday, with workers rolling out the red carpet and polishing Oscar statues for the 76th annual Oscars event honouring the best of moviemaking.

Film fans were allowed to arrive early and take up positions in grandstands along the red carpet set up for star arrivals on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Kodak Theatre.

Celebrities will be strutting the red carpet again after Oscar organisors scrapped its glitzy arrivals area last year in deference to the US-led war effort in Iraq.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" is expected to make Oscar history on Sunday night - the firm is a hot favourite to become the first fantasy film ever to win best picture.

Either Sean Penn, Bill Murray or Johnny Depp could also become a first-time winner.

They're each nominated in the Best Actor category.

Sofia Coppola is the first American woman to be nominated for best director, but she's expected to lose to "The Return of the King" director Peter Jackson.

Sunday's Oscars also end an awards season fraught with early drama and machinations that pitted studio movies against low-budgeted rivals.

Ultimately, a healthy mix of commercial and independent films earned Oscar nominations this year.

RED CARPET PREPS

With the Oscars just three days away, Tinseltown was gearing up for its biggest party of the year on Thursday.

The red carpet was being rolled out in Hollywood and banners were being hung in preparation for the 77th Academy Awards.

More than three-thousand people are expected to descend on the Kodak Theatre on Sunday (US time) for the ceremony.

Security will be tight.

On Thursday, streets surrounding the theatre were blocked off already, metal barricades limited walkways and uniformed police officers were standing guard.

The red carpet walkway to the theatre received a bit of a face-lift this year.

Following the recent rainstorms, Academy Award planners were not taking any chances and erected a plastic tent over the red carpet to keep Hollywood''s famous faces dry as they show off their much-anticipated Oscar attire.

STORYLINE

Sunday's wet weather in Los Angeles isn't dampening spirits for Hollywood's biggest night - the 80th Academy Awards ceremony known as the Oscars.

Until a couple of weeks ago, the event was in danger of being washed out not by rain, but by a writers' strike.

But the industrial dispute was settled just in time for the writers to scramble together a script for the presenters and for host Jon Stewart.

The president of the Motion Picture Academy said there's added excitement this year because other awards shows, including the Golden Globes, were casualties of the strike.

The first spectators to arrive on Sunday were hoping rain wouldn't deter the Hollywood stars from coming to the awards ceremony.

While Kyle Wilson said it was "invigorating" and "exciting", Kara Wilson summed it up.

"Miserable. Not fun yet. It will be fun though, it will be fun that is for sure," she said.

STORYLINE

Spirits were high ahead of the 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony in a rainy Hollywood on Sunday.

Preparations geared up outside the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars ceremony will take place, amid a forecast of showers for the arrival area along Hollywood Boulevard, where stars pose in front of photographers, reporters and cheering fans.

The rainy outlook is unlikely to dampen spirits for Hollywood's biggest night, which is serving double duty as a ceremony honouring the year's best in film and a celebration for a town relieved to return to business following the screenwriters' strike.

Settled just two weeks before the Oscars, the 100-day strike had left the fate of the awards show in doubt as stars indicated they would not cross writers' picket lines to attend.

FOR NOMINEES, EMMY DAY CAN PROVIDE A VACATION FROM CALORIE COUNTING

Given what the cameras add, Hollywood stars start out some 10 pounds behind the game.

So, little wonder so many actors are serious weight watchers.

But even those most diligent about diet and exercise give in to temptation on occasion: Emmy day - this year Sunday, Sept. 18 - being a likely contender.

Chances are, for many nominees, something wickedly caloric their way will eventually come by night's end.

Friday night (16 SEPT. 2016) in West Hollywood, the Television Academy threw its annual weekend-of bash for performer nominees, who revealed Emmy-day plans from waking up through to hitting the arrivals line for The Big Show.

"Sunday morning, I'm going to try to eat," said Keegan-Michael Key, a four-time nominee this year, including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for the sketch show "Key and Peele."

"It might be the only time I eat a full meal all day," he continued. "So, I like to go and eat something bad. Like IHOP. Or figure out exactly the minute that In-N-Out opens, and go have and In-N-Out burger - like at 9:30 in the morning. And then, so much time is spent just putting on makeup, because I have more stuff to put makeup on (pointing to his bald head). But what we do, this is a thing in my house: We get our makeup on and we all drink wine. The makeup artist drinks wine. Girlfriend drinks wife. I drink wine. We all have our wine when we do the makeup, which you'd think would screw it all up. It doesn't. It gives her (the makeup artist) a steadier hand. I don't know. I don't know what I'm saying about my makeup artist. And then we get in our car and we get moving."

Actress Felicity Huffman is already a 2005 Emmy winner for her work on "Desperate Housewives" and, this year, is nominated for a second time for the drama "American Crime." (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.)

Her actor-husband William H. Macy has two wins. So, they've got this Emmy-day thing down.

"I think what we'll do after coffee, and our girls are now old enough is that they'll be sleeping in, is we'll be taking a run. That's the first thing we'll do," said Huffman before jokingly adding, "and then a cigarette and some bacon."

Actress Maura Tierney, nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for "The Affair" said on her Emmy morning, "I won't eat, I don't think. I'll eat something, but I get really nervous. I'm doubting that I'm going to be eating bacon or anything."

Tierney said she'll be staying in a downtown Los Angeles hotel near the Microsoft Theater, where the Emmys are taking place, because the long ride in is so nerve wracking. "I don't know what I'll eat," Tierney said. "Maybe a few nuts and berries. ... (A pause.) I'm kidding. I don't know what I'm going to eat."

Padma Lakshmi, a nominee for Outstanding Reality Competition Series as a producer of "Top Chef," said she'll start out the day nutritionally angelic. But she'll likely be a devil by the time it comes to the after parties.

"I eat a really good breakfast. Not a lot of bread," she explained. "Although I make up for it after the Emmys. I will usually end the night with at least one In-N-Out cheeseburger. At least, because, they also - Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, all those parities will have those little push carts with hamburgers. 'I'm done with all you red-carpet people. I'm finally letting my stomach push out,'" she said, laughing.

The 68th Emmy Awards is set for Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

So this play was going nowhere when I came to it and my producers came to it and Geoffrey came to it. The King's Speech" was crowned best picture Sunday at an Academy Awards ceremony as precise as a state coronation. The monarchy drama won an expected four Oscars, and predictable favorites claimed acting honors.

Colin Firth as stammering British ruler George VI in "The King's Speech" earned the best-actor prize, while Natalie Portman won best actress as a delusional ballerina in "Black Swan."

Firth said he was planning to cook a lot to relax after the exhilaration of a successful awards season.

"I don't think I'm very good at it but I'm going to inflict my cooking on anybody within range. I tend to find that that's a very good way to decompress. I'll probably be the only one eating it," he said.

Backstage in the press room, Portman described how the long days of shooting kept her from dwelling on the film's dark mood.

"I was literally just falling into bed and waking up and going back to set. I think that sort of pace helped me stay so focused for the part. Yeah, I didn't have too many crazy dreams. I'm pretty good at shutting off. This one was a little harder to shake, just the whole mood of the whole movie was so intense. It stayed with me a little longer than usual," she said.

The boxing drama "The Fighter" captured both supporting-acting honors, for Christian Bale as a boxer-turned-drug-abuser and Melissa Leo as a boxing clan's domineering matriarch.

Network censors bleeped Leo for dropping the F-word during her speech.

Backstage, she jokingly conceded it was "probably a very inappropriate place to use that particular word."

Bale joked that he was keeping his language clean.

"The King's Speech" director Tom Hooper described the on-set camaraderie between stars Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth and said finding the story shook his faith in Hollywood's ability to find good scripts.

STARS TALK FASHION, EXCITEMENT ON ACADEMY AWARDS RED CARPET

Hailee Steinfeld says the custom-made Marchese gown she wore to the Academy Awards makes her feel "like a princess." The Best Supporting Actress nominee for "True Grit" says she had an idea of what she wanted to wear and drew it out.

Meantime Jennifer Lawrence, up for Best Actress for "Winter's Bone" says comfort was the most important thing when choosing her Oscar gown, adding she "didn't want a corset!"

Her Calvin Klein gown was a slinky, scoopneck dress in fire-engine red.

Newlywed Russell Brand walked the red carpet with his mother, Barbara Elizabeth who told him to "be yourself" when it came time for him to present during the telecast.

Mila Kunis wore a very low-cut, lingerie-style Elie Saab gown in lavender with lace details while Mandy Moore dazzled in a gold-beaded, illusion gown by Monique Lhuillier.

Melissa Leo, nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for "The Fighter" chose a Marc Bouwer gown, which had a collar-style neckline, was an atypical choice of this most classic and glamorous occasion of the awards-show season.

The Academy Awards' red carpet is a traffic jam of celebrities, publicists, media and screaming bleacher fans.

Sunday's red carpet ran its course under sunny skies, but temperatures dipped into the 50s and a chilly wind blew at times, making goosebumps de rigeur on Hollywood's most famous flesh.

Jennifer Hudson worked her new figure on the red carpet in a tangerine-orange halter gown by Versace. She topped it off with a 20-carat ring, long, basket earrings, and bracelets at $1 million (US) dollars.

The Oscar winner said she creates a character in her mind to walk the red carpet.

"They say 'Don't let the dress wear you - you wear it.' And just live in the moment. I like to create a character in my mind, and lately I've been teasing, saying 'I'm a supermodel' every day, but today I'm a little movie star."

Amy Adams chose a higher neckline L'Wren Scott gown covered in purple caviar beads with a back-hem slit. She says she "fell in love with the color" of the gown which was contrasted by a chunky pendant necklace.

Scarlett Johansson wore a deep-magenta, stretch-lace gown by Dolce & Gabbana and Hilary Swank dressed in a strapless, gray Gucci had the unexpected twist of delicate feathers at the hemline.

Nicole Kidman arrived with husband Keith Urban in a strapless, white Christian Dior gown with silver embroidery despite the recent suspension of designer John Galliano, with a 19th-century, old-mine cut diamond necklace from Fred Leighton.

The Best Actress nominee said her most important fashion critic is her daughter Sunday Rose.

"She approved this. It's got a thumbs up from Sunday."

New mom Penelope Cruz stepped out in a red sequined L'Wren Scott with her husband and Oscar nominee Javier Bardem.

And last year's Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock also wore a red, sculptured, strapless Vera Wang.

Cate Blanchett went the couture route in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. The pleated, pale-wisteria dress was embroidered with pearls, crystals covered in leather and a swath of yellow beads around the neck.

Best Actor nominee Colin Firth found the whole situation surreal.

"This isn't my life right now. This is just a weird experience."

Lastly, Helena Bonham Carter worked with costume designer Colleen Atwood for her black corset gown with cat-scratched sleeves.

Helena Bonham Carter, a Best Supporting Actress nominee says the world may be watching to see what she wears on the red carpet but she's not worried about whether her choice will be liked or not.

"I'll do whatever. People will not always not like you. You can't ever expect everyone to like you. I don't do it for that. I'm not dressing to please other people."
