RIDLEY. EDGERTON, LIU AND SAWYERS REFRESHINGLY EARTHBOUND AT STUDENT ACADEMY AWARDS

Some actors are cannily looking to the future.

Joel Edgerton decided to be a presenter at Thursday's (22 SEPT. 2016) Student Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles in order to meet new talent and secure his next paychecks.

"I'm thinking 10 years ahead and I'm, like, 'I need a job.'" he said half-joking.

"I'm a smart guy. I'm like looking to the future. No, I'm seriously looking to the future, because where I started was no film school. There was a film school. But like whether you make it up as you go along, which we did. Or you go to, like, an established film school, it's taking baby steps and dipping your toe into something that feels a little bit unknown. And I think it's an exciting thing, and I think some of the most exciting filmmakers -- to be honest, I feel like the people I want to side up with are people who are starting out. It's a gamble. As an actor, you need to be partnered up with people that make you look good. But it's sometimes a great gamble to work with young filmmakers. And I have a real affinity to that because I remember what it was like to be young filmmaker, and wanting people to kind of partner up with us."

The awards have been established by the Academy as a platform for emerging global talent 43 years ago.

Actor Parker Sawyers who also presented at the event said it was important to discover talent early.

"We know there are incredible alumni, people from the winners of yesteryear. So, it's an exciting time for the future of film -- especially as an actor, I get to see people and meet people and present an award to people I hopefully will be working with in the future," he said.

Some Student Academy Award winners went on to be showbiz powerhouses: Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump"), Bob Saget ("Full House"), Spike Lee ("Do the Right Thing"), Trey Parker ("South Park") and John Lasseter ("Toy Story") to name just a few.

Lucy Liu said she felt the time was right to participate in the ceremony, with Hollywood now openly discussing the lack of diversity in the film industry, and making moves to close gender, racial and other gaps.

"I think the timing worked out perfectly. I think there's a great deal of awareness and inclusion in terms of diversity and gender," she said.

"And we're seeing a lot of that tonight. I love that -- I'm presenting the Foreign Film, so I think there's something great about that. And Animation, which I love, too. So the combination of it is perfect."

Winners represented not only the United States, but also Germany, Israel, Poland, China, Greece, Lebanon and other countries.

Amid calls for a boycott of the Academy Awards by Rev. Al Sharpton over its all-white acting nominees and Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith both announcing they would sit out this year's ceremony, the academy's president said it was time for major changes — and soon.

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a statement promising more diversity, and quickly.

In a video message on Facebook, Pinkett Smith also said she wouldn't attend or watch the

Oscars in February. Pinkett Smith, whose husband Will Smith wasn't nominated for his performance in the NFL head trauma drama "Concussion," said it was time for people of color to disregard the Academy Awards.

Last year's all-white acting nominees also drew calls for a boycott, though not from such prominent individuals as Lee and Pinkett Smith. Whether it had any impact or not, the audience for the broadcast, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, was down 16 percent from the year prior, a six-year low.

Isaacs has made a point of presenting a more inclusive show this year. The Feb. 28 broadcast will be hosted by Chris Rock and produced by "Django Unchained" producer Reginald Hudlin and David Hill. On Saturday, Rock, unveiling a new promotion for the broadcast, called the ceremony "The White BET Awards."

When Oscar nominations were announced Thursday, Isaacs acknowledged she was "disappointed" that all 20 acting nominees were again white and promised to "continue the conversation" on diversity.

Isaacs has worked to diversify membership for the academy, which a 2012 study by the Los Angeles Times found is overwhelming white and male.

But on Monday, Isaacs was more explicit and promised an examination of the academy and a more intense drive to diversify.

"This is a difficult but important conversation, and it's time for big changes," she said in a statement released Monday night. "The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership. In the coming days and weeks we will conduct a review of our membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond."

Many awards handicappers expected nominations for Idris Elba of "Beasts of No Nation" and Benicio Del Toro for "Sicario." The N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton" also failed to earn a best picture nomination, despite some predictions it would. Ryan Coogler's acclaimed Rocky sequel "Creed" scored a nomination only for Sylvester Stallone. (Lee's own movie, the Chicago gang violence hip-hop musical "Chi-Raq" — celebrated by some and scorned by others — also went unnoticed.)

Final preparations are underway at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

The world famous cinema awards are scheduled for Sunday March the 26th.

But not every one is happy about this year's ceremony:

A small group of anti-abortion protesters took the streets outside the Shrine Auditorium where the Oscars are taking place, to protest the nomination of the film the Cider House Rules which deals with the abortion issue.

Sunny skies greeted organisers of the 72nd Academy Awards on Saturday.

Final preparations are underway for the world famous awards ceremony scheduled on Sunday.

This year, the academy has been the object of a lot of extra publicity.

First it lost ballots and had new ones sent, then Oscar statues were stolen and then found later in a trash bin, and finally a Web site claimed it had an insider's list of nominees but it did not.

No photos or video footage of the ceremony can be used anywhere during the broadcast.

An agreement drawn up by the academy threatens permanent loss of press privileges or legal action for violators.

The technical logistics behind the scenes are massive.

Kilometres of cables have been laid, and just as important, the champagne arrived for the stars to sip at the Governor's ball party taking place right after the show.

This year's show will be different from previous awards.

New producers have brought in a host of new people to work on the event, and that has excited everybody in Los Angeles.

Celebrities zipped past the waiting international press last night at the Golden Globe awards.

Nicole Kidman, dressed in a blue satiny dress adorned with peacock feathers stopped long enough to tell us who designed her dress.

"Yes I like feathers, peacocks Gucci"

Raquel Welch, sixties icon and sex symbol extra-ordinaire put the event in a historical perspective:

"Well in the 60s and not just to date myself but in the 60s, people were not so careful, they dressed the way they felt. I mean, a lot of people would do outrageous things and wear, I don't know a mini-skirt from home and stuff like that and people would go 'Oh how could she dress up like that?' You know. Spanish actor Javier Bardem, lead actor in Globe winning film ' The Sea Within ' was happy to be there :

"Well it is pretty amazing, the movie ' The Sea Inside ' got two nominations and that is a lot and I guess beyond a foreign movie, it is a good movie, that is the reaction of people watching the movie, they like it "

Much lauded actor Morgan Freeman who attended in connection with Clint Eastwood's " Million Dollar Baby ", radiating calm, told us about the meaning of the Golden Globe awards :

" Well the critics response is important to the success of any movie, this kind of critical acclaim, because that is what we really got, and what we have got is an absolute pantheon of good movies, you know, great outstanding, 'The Aviator', outstanding, all the ones I have seen so far, all the ones that don't come to mind right now, but I mean we are looking at really terrific work so we are in great company"

While British Actress Helen Mirren compared the event to the Oscars:

" It is thought of as a lighter hearted awards ceremony, possibly more fun. I mean I have always enjoyed the Academy Awards because you usually get an amazing show. The Globes are very different. It's a sort of incredibly well-organised Mom-and-Pop organisation, if you know what I mean, so it's always got that kind of slightly loosey-goosey feeling about it and that kind of makes it fun."

At some point a bucket filled with bottles of mineral water and ice spilled onto the carpet, a minor disaster, which caused Will Arnett and David Cross/Actor, "Arrested Development," to cammoent.

"Like elsewhere around the world, they'd laugh at this 'You call this a disaster?' But here in Hollywood, this is a true disaster."

Of course fashion is one of the more interesting aspects of the red carpet arrivals at Awards ceremonies, which caused Brad Bird/Director, "The Incredibles," in the voice of the film's uber-designer, Edna 'E' Mode, to say :

"You know, some people look wonderful darling and some people would be better off wearing the red carpet, if you know what I mean?"

A major celebrity party in their own right, the Globes serve as the most prominent ceremony in Hollywood's pre-game show leading up to the Academy Awards on Feb. 27.

The Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whose small membership of about 90 people pales compared to the nearly 6,000 film professionals eligible to vote for the Oscars.

Yet the Globes historically serve as a solid forecast that helps set the odds for subsequent film honours.

Golden Globe winners gain attention that can put them on the inside track for prizes from acting, directing and other filmmaking guilds, momentum that often sticks with them right through Oscar night.

All four of last year's Oscar winners for acting - Sean Penn, Charlize Theron, Tim Robbins and Renee Zellweger - earned Golden Globes first. Best-picture champ "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and its director, Peter Jackson, also preceded their Oscar triumphs with Globe wins.

Along with "The Aviator," other dramatic best-picture nominees for the 62nd annual Golden Globes were "Closer," "Finding Neverland," "Hotel Rwanda," "Kinsey" and "Million Dollar Baby." Joining "Sideways" in the best musical or comedy race were "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "The Incredibles," "Andrew Lloyd Webber's the Phantom of the Opera" and "Ray."

Besides best actor in a musical or comedy for "Ray," Foxx scored nominations for supporting actor in the thriller "Collateral" and actor in a TV movie or miniseries for the prison drama "Redemption."

Robin Williams, a five-time Globe winner for such films as "The Fisher King" and "Good Morning, Vietnam," received the Cecil B. DeMille award for career achievement.

Anti-abortion campaigners tried to disrupt the Academy Awards Sunday with a protest against the movie Cider House Rules.

They targeted the British actor, Michael Caine, who went on to win the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as an orphanage doctor who carries out abortions.

The pro-life group Survivor staged its demonstration outside the Los Angeles theatre where the Academy Award ceremony was being held.

They also demonstrated outside Michael Caine's home in Beverly Hills.

They claim the film is spreading a message that abortion is acceptable, and say that Michael Caine was wrong to have appeared in the film.

"Most of Hollywood in their movies are pro-choice. They never expose the other half of it and expose it for what it really is, so that's why we have to come out here and show Hollywood what it is and maybe we can get them to make some movies which are true about abortion."

The protesters tried to attract the attention of stars as they drove in their limousines to the Academy Awards ceremony.

The film, set in the 1940s, is based on the best-selling novel by John Irving, and angered abortion opponents when it was first published in 1985.

Amid calls for a boycott of the Academy Awards by Rev. Al Sharpton over its all-white acting nominees and Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith both announcing they would sit out this year's ceremony, the academy's president said it was time for major changes - and soon.

"How do you live in an age when we can put a black man in the White House a black woman as Attorney General but you can't get a black or brown male or female nominated for an Oscar in a key position in Hollywood," said Sharpton in New York Tuesday (19 JAN. 2016). "So we have no alternative now but to escalate our drive since talking would not achieve it. And that is by telling people to tune out."

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a statement promising more diversity, and quickly.

In a video message on Facebook, Pinkett Smith also said she wouldn't attend or watch the Oscars in February. Pinkett Smith, whose husband Will Smith wasn't nominated for his performance in the NFL head trauma drama "Concussion," said it was time for people of color to disregard the Academy Awards.

Last year's all-white acting nominees also drew calls for a boycott, though not from such prominent individuals as Lee and Pinkett Smith. Whether it had any impact or not, the audience for the broadcast, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, was down 16 percent from the year prior, a six-year low.

Isaacs has made a point of presenting a more inclusive show this year. The Feb. 28 broadcast will be hosted by Chris Rock and produced by "Django Unchained" producer Reginald Hudlin and David Hill. On Saturday, Rock, unveiling a new promotion for the broadcast, called the ceremony "The White BET Awards."

When Oscar nominations were announced Thursday, Isaacs acknowledged she was "disappointed" that all 20 acting nominees were again white and promised to "continue the conversation" on diversity.

Isaacs has worked to diversify membership for the academy, which a 2012 study by the Los Angeles Times found is overwhelming white and male.

But on Monday, Isaacs was more explicit and promised an examination of the academy and a more intense drive to diversify.

"This is a difficult but important conversation, and it's time for big changes," she said in a statement released Monday night. "The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership. In the coming days and weeks we will conduct a review of our membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond."

Many awards handicappers expected nominations for Idris Elba of "Beasts of No Nation" and Benicio Del Toro for "Sicario." The N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton" also failed to earn a best picture nomination, despite some predictions it would. Ryan Coogler's acclaimed Rocky sequel "Creed" scored a nomination only for Sylvester Stallone. (Lee's own movie, the Chicago gang violence hip-hop musical "Chi-Raq" - celebrated by some and scorned by others - also went unnoticed.)

The hashtag "OscarsSoWhite," created last year, was quickly resurrected online following the nominations. The Rev. Al Sharpton - who last year met with former Sony head Amy Pascal following leaked emails that some viewed as racist - on Friday first lambasted the academy.

WASHINGTON, OYELOWO TALK HOLLYWOOD DIVERSITY AT OSCARS

David Oyelowo says it's not just the Academy Awards that need diversifying.

"Every facet of life, whether institutions or the nation in general, should reflect what society is composed of, not just racially, but in terms of sex, women, young, old," the star of "Selma" said on the Oscar red carpet.

Although "Selma" was nominated for best movie, Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King Jr in the film, was passed over, something many considered a snub.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, star of last year's winner "12 Years A Slave," also weighed in: "It's always great to have obviously a diverse film selection. There was more of that last year and this year not so much. I for one loved 'Selma' and felt that it could've been easily represented more fully in the awards ceremonies. But these things happen."

For previous Oscars winner Octavia Spencer diversity in Hollywood "starts well before the Academy. You first have to have the product. You have to have the films made. Everyone hopes that their film ends up at the Academy, but it doesn't start there. Diversity starts when you start making the films and those decision makers need to make more diverse films."

And Viola Davis said pressure is on Hollywood's studios: "I think it's on the studios. I think you have to green light more stories that include people of color. And I think you have to use your imagination with certain characters that will include and open it up to other actors of color. Because you can't get nominated for anything that you're not in."

"Scandal" star Kerry Washington agreed.

"It's less about the Academy and more about the business in general. I think we need to be more and more inclusive about the stories we tell and the stories that we support," she said.

In Sunday's Academy Awards, all 20 acting nominees are white, a result that prompted some to declare that they would boycott this year's ceremony. The lack of nominations for "Selma" director Ava DuVernay and star David Oyelowo were a particular flashpoint, viewed by many as unjust oversights not only because they merited honoring, but because their absences furthered an ignoble Oscar history.

OSCARS DIVERSITY DISCUSSION CONTINUES AT THE NAACP IMAGE AWARDS

"Empire" star Jussie Smollett wants to make sure the uproar over the lack of diversity at the Academy Awards is kept in perspective.

"I've never heard of a golden statue saving a life. You know what I'm saying? I just came back from Flint. That's what I care about. I care about Black Lives Matter and police brutality. That's what I care about. That's what I want to talk about. So if the conversation of diversity in Hollywood and diversity with awards is connected somehow to a very real conclusion then that's cool. But if it's not, and it's just rhetoric, then I don't care to partake in that," Smollett said.

Smollett was one of many stars to discuss diversity on the red carpet at Friday's NAACP Image Awards, where "Empire" dominated with wins for outstanding drama series, actor and actress.

Smollett, who received the Chairman's Award for public service, called on Hollywood to take action:

"People have to take note. And that it's not just our responsibility. You know this is no more my fight than it is Reese Witherspoon's. So for that, we are all in this together. And diversity should not be a fad or a hashtag. It should be something that we represent because as artists we are supposed to tell the truth and show the world in a very truthful way. And the world is as we see tonight. It's not one color. So for that, it's what we should care about," he said.

"black-ish" swept the TV comedy categories with Anthony Anderson winning the award for outstanding actor, while the show was selected as outstanding comedy series and Ross was honored as outstanding actress.

The highly admired biopic "Straight Outta Compton" picked up the outstanding motion picture prize at the Image Awards.

"Compton" star O'Shea Jackson Jr. took home the outstanding supporting actor trophy.

"My parents have a line: They're always happy for me, but they're never surprised. You know they are my backbone and I can't wait to see them tonight," said Jackson Jr., who walked the carpet with his father, Ice Cube.

The film, which tells the story of the pioneering rap group N.W.A., failed to score a best picture nod at the Oscars.

Actress Stacey Dash recently made headlines for questioning the BET channel and the Image Awards.

The former "Clueless" star said in an interview that people need to make up their minds between segregation and integration, "and if we don't want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the (NAACP) Image Awards, where you're only rewarded if you're black."

"Straight Outta Compton" actor Neil Brown Jr. fired back at Dash while arriving to the Image Awards:

"You know organizations like this came up because of the misrepresentation of the people or having no representation. Award shows, like this event, like this had to be created so people of color could get a fair shot. You know what I mean? And we nominate white people too as well. I mean I don't know if she knows this, there's been quite a bit of white people nominated and quite a bit of white people who won BET awards and all these types of things, right? The people who speak those negative things typically are people who are pretty much closed-minded. We're open-minded here. This is all inclusive," he said.

Michael B. Jordan was the evening's big winner. The star of the boxing drama "Creed" was honored as both the entertainer of the year and outstanding actor in a motion picture for his role as Apollo Creed's son in the "Rocky" spin-off.

Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee were among this year's attendees who said they won't attend this upcoming Oscars ceremony, due to the lack of diversity among the nominees.

John Legend received the NAACP President's Award, which recognizes those for career success and public service.

STRIKE WORRIES ABOUND AT GLOBES NOMINATIONS

Hollywood labor strife won't disrupt the Golden Globes again this year.

But actors at the Globes nominations say they're still worried that awards season could end up being dominated by discussion of contracts and Internet revenue -- and not their performances -- as the Screen Actors Guild sends strike authorization ballots to its members.

SAG plans to send the ballots to more than 100,000 union members on Jan. 2.

Votes will be counted on Jan. 23, nearly two weeks after the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, but ahead of the Feb. 22 Academy Awards, the most important date on the Hollywood calendar.

Approval by 75 percent of voting members is required to pass the measure. If it is approved, the SAG national board can call a strike.

The guild is at odds with the studios over the treatment of Internet productions and the benefits that actors can get when earthquakes or other unforeseen events, such as a strike by another union, shut down productions.

For instance, actors have an outstanding claim for payments they say they are due for work lost during the 100-day strike by writers last season. That strike reduced the Golden Globes this past January to a glorified press conference.

In the Internet debate, the guild wants union coverage of all shows made for the Web, regardless of budget, and residual payments for actors on made-for-Internet shows that are reused online. Currently, almost all provisions for made-for-Internet productions are negotiable or at the producer's discretion.

The Globes are the second-biggest film awards show after the Academy Awards and often set the tone for the Oscars by singling out key performances and achievements. The Globe ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 11, 11 days before Oscar nominations.

STARS TURN OUT FOR INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS ON EVE OF OSCARS

Some call the Independent Spirit Awards the dress rehearsals to the Academy Awards.

Hollywood A-listers arrived Saturday (1 MARCH 2014) to the Independent Spirit Awards, a more laid-back, beachside ceremony in Santa Monica, just west of Los Angeles.

All of the Oscar favorites won at the Spirits, "12 Years a Slave" took home five awards, including best feature. Matthew McConaughey won best actor for "Dallas Buyers Club" and Cate Blanchett for "Blue Jasmine." McConaughey's co-star, Jared Leto, won best male supporting performance.

"I'm from Australia and the filmmaking culture there is always pretty much on a shoestring (budget) so I feel very much at home," said Blanchett on the red carpet. "But I'm so pleased that the film has been recognized in both the main stage arena, mainstream arena, and the independent arena. I think it's a real testament to the reach of the story."

On the way in, the actress also repeated her view of the renewed scandal surrounding "Blue Jasmine" director Woody Allen and Dylan Farrow's claims he sexually assaulted her as a child: "It's a family issue, and I hope they can resolve it as a family."

Her co-star Sally Hawkins said she was not ready for Sunday's big event.

"How do you get ready to? I don't know? I'm trying. How to be ready? I don't know what to do really to get ready? How does one get ready for the Oscars?"

For many, the Spirit Awards conclude months of award-season events, and they provide a chance to exhale before the Oscars. McConaughey, Blanchett, Leto and Lupita Nyong'o have racked up a slew of awards, often triumphing over the same colleagues.

"For me the passion project is '12 Years,'" said Nyong'o. "It's a project that has fed me in more ways than one. That's it. I get to be here and celebrate that film. It's great."

Eighty-four-year-old June Squibb, nominated for supporting actress at both the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars for "Nebraska," said she's looking forward to a respite.

"My son and his girlfriend are taking me to Hawaii in late April, but that's not very far from now when you think about it. So I'm eager to do it. They really felt that I needed a vacation. So I'm very appreciative of that that they're doing it," said Squibb.

STARS REACT BACKSTAGE TO GLOBES TALKING POINTS

One of the biggest talking points backstage at the Golden Globe Awards was Jodie Foster's speech.

During Sunday's show, the actress took the stage as this year's winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, which had been announced previously.

But Foster's acceptance was anything but predictable when the actress came out without really coming out, and suggested she was retiring from acting without exactly saying so.

"The speech kind of speaks for itself," said the actress backstage.

"It's a big long career and it's not just a career, it's friendships and relationships."

But she did clear up the question of retirement.

"Oh no, I could never stop acting. You would have to drag me behind a team of horses," she said.

"No, I'm not retiring from acting and, you know, I'd like to be directing tomorrow. If you have something that's perfect for me I'd like to be directing tomorrow, so no. I'm actually more into it than I've ever been."

Ben Affleck's Iran hostage thriller "Argo" won the top prize in the drama category at the Hollywood Foreign Press' awards show as well as Best Director for Affleck.

The movie is nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards but Affleck isn't nominated as director - something he says doesn't bother him.

"We got nominated for seven Oscars including best picture. I was thrilled. I mean if you can't be happy with that your future, you're prospects for long-term happiness, are probably pretty dim," said the star.

"I'm elated tonight. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world."

A surprise of the night was when former President Bill Clinton took to the stage to introduce "Lincoln."

"What an incredible privilege to have him, a Lincolnian scholar in his own right, speak about our film in that way," said Daniel Day-Lewis, who won best actor for his role in the film.

Adele and co-writer Paul Epworth won for best song for their theme tune to the James Bond adventure "Skyfall."

"I feel very excited tonight," said the pop star.

"I feel a little bit overexcited. It's my first night out since I had my child and my inspiration normally comes from heartbreak but I don't think I'm ever going to be devastated again anymore, so all good."

"It's a huge responsibility and a lot of pressure to do a song for any film, let alone a Bond song," she continued.

"Shirley Bassey is the queen of Bond, so that pressure was huge. I'd had a huge, weird, strange, bizarre year with my album '21' that just shot me to beyond fame, it was ridiculous, and I was pregnant. I had my child like two weeks before the film came out so it was bad timing. That's why I didn't know if I wanted to do it."

WALK OF FAME STAR FOR HALLE

Halle Berry, the first African-American woman to win a Best Actress Oscar, gets her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday (03APR07).

The 40 year old is one of tinseltown's highest paid stars after roles in blockbusters like "Die Another Day", "Gothika" and the X-Men series of movies.

Born in Ohio in August 1966, her mother Judith was originally from Liverpool, her father Jerome was Afro-American. She says her upbringing has a direct impact on her speaking out on race issues, commenting once: " Every day of my life I have always been aware that I am bi-racial." At a press conference in Mexico last year, she told the media: " "Being in America and being a woman of colour I have felt victimised by some of those same laws that immigrants feel victimised by as well, so I am not always the supporter of my government."

After starting a modelling career, her acting breakthrough came when she was cast in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever" in 1991. Films including " The Flintstones" followed and " Bulworth" in 1998.

In 1999 she starred in the HBO TV film, " Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" in which she portrayed the first black woman to ever be nominated for an Oscar. She was rewarded with an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

However, it was her part as the wife of an executed prisoner in "Monster's Ball" (2001) which was to give Halle Berry her Oscar win. She famously broke down in tears after receiving the Academy Award, dedicating it to " every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened." Backstage, she added that she "never thought it would be possible in my lifetime."

After two stints as Storm in the X-Men series of films with Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romjin, Berry took the part of Bond girl Jinx in "Die Another Day" where she re-created Ursula Andress's scene from " Dr No", walking out of the sea in her bikini. From there she was offered her first lead role - as Catwoman in the 2004 movie.

" I'm a little alone, a little frightened, " she confessed at the premiere. So she should have been. Critics reviled it as one of the worst movies of the year. Her only award for it was the Razzie for Worst Actress, but she won a lot of fans by being one of the few A-Listers who ever turned up to collect their gong, with her Best Actress Oscar in tow.

It wasn't just her career that was suffering - in 2005 she also split up with her second husband, RnB singer Eric Benet, claiming that he had repeatedly cheated on her. Her first marriage, to pro-baseball player David Justice, lasted from1992 -96. She's now dating Canadian model Gabriel Aubry, who's nine years her junior.

Berry re-created part as Storm for "X-Men: The Last Stand" in 2006, while she will soon appear opposite Bruce Willis in the upcoming release, "Perfect Stranger". Both Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton, her co-star in "Monster's Ball", are expected to be looking on as Halle arrives on the Walk of Fame.

OSCAR-NOMINATED ACTOR DEMIAN BICHIR HOLDS PRESSER

Mexican leading man Demian Bichir thinks his Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in the movie "A Better Life" represents an opportunity for lawmakers in the United States to keep working towards immigration reform.

During a news conference on Wednesday (25 JAN. 2012) in Mexico City the actor said he hoped the movie, directed by American filmmaker Chris Weitz, would make politicians more sensitive regarding the immigration issue.

"Maybe then this notorious immigration reform, which has been highly discussed and is in every politician's table but nobody wants to really address, would change," said the actor.

In "A Better Life," the 47-year-old actor plays and undocumented immigrant struggling to keep his family together.

The actor said he was surprised by the support of the public in Mexico after his nomination, but he knew this would not change the reality of the country.

"It would be utopian and silly to think that any of this would solve any of the problems we have in Mexico," said the actor.

"I don't think a nomination or an academy award could bring us peace, security, guarantees, or put an end to corruption and impunity."

Bichir said it was "a tremendous honour" to be a nominee, especially in an industry with so much competition.

The actor was nominated for Best Actor along with Gary Oldman, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Jean Dujardin.

Bichir is well known for his role in the Mexican movies "Cilantro y Perejil" and "Sexo, Pudor y Lagrimas." (Sex, Shame and Tears)

He has also featured in the American television show "Weeds."
