LEAD IN:

For decades Britain's discontent over its European Union (EU) membership has simmered on, but then came the June referendum.

Nationalism surfaced and Britain's voted to leave the EU.

Brexit as it became known sent shockwaves through money markets and governments around the world.

STORY-LINE:

In the weeks running up to referendum judgement day, the British were busy with a little soul searching.

Mulling over their shared history, the country's pride in their democracy and heritage.

It was a year when Queen Elizabeth celebrated being the longest reigning UK monarch and the country celebrated her ninetieth birthday.

The pomp and ceremony from her recent jubilee were still a source of pride and were reminiscent of the heydays when London style was considered to be world leading.

In the 1960's British fashion and British pop were riding high.

That sense of being at the vanguard of style has continued, according to Robert Johnston the Fashion Director of GQ Magazine: "You also think street scene, you think east London, you think hipsters, you think the most vibrant street fashion possibly in the world."

Author Iain Aitch explained how a variety of heritages were now mixed up, making Britishness a more complex idea to communicate: "Everyone might say a Sunday roast or fish and chips, that's a quintessentially British meal, but then suddenly everyone says it's chicken tikka masala."

But it wasn't this hipster, Brick Lane art and curry house side of Britain that won the vote.

The referendum on June 23rd was to signal the start of a long debate.

Britons for the first time had to absorb what being outside of the EU looked like.

Britain joined what was then called the European Economic Community in January 1973.

This was ratified by a referendum in 1975 with a resounding 67% majority.

By the seventies, Britain was beset by strikes and disgruntled union workers.

Traditional industries such as manufacturing and coal were in decline in the mid seventies.

Unemployment exceeded one million for the first time in March 1975. By the August that figure had increased to 1.25 million.

Some 83,000 immigrants were living in the UK by 1975, mostly from the Commonwealth.

According to Migration Watch UK for the year ending December 2015, net migration to the UK was 333,000.

And the lady had yet to turn. Margaret Thatcher MP (then leader of the opposition) campaigned to stay in the European Economic Community.

Later as prime minister between 1979 and 1990, Thatcher was known for her tough line with Brussels, especially during negotiations for the Maastrict Treaty in 1992.

The city of Maastrict is the home of the treaty which created the EU.

As summer arrived, businesses, leading universities and research establishments were beginning to assess the impact of Brexit.

For science and medicine, concerns were two fold.

Britain had attracted thousands of top researchers as well as billions of Euros in grants.

They went into research like this at Kings College London.

This project is a multidisciplinary look at the potential causes and effects of autism. It's a long term project which is linked to other studies across Europe.

Doctors and scientists aren't worried about losing cash in the short term, but falling behind in the knowledge race in the long term, especially as Britain has sought to place itself as a central base for the new industrial technologies.

The other fear is losing the brains which have been drawn to British research, people who now fear they will need to move to other institutions to keep up with the cash and the research.

Lead scientist at King's College Professor Declan Murphy warned: "Big questions need big populations to come up with the right answers, and we simply cannot deliver the amount of patients for the amount of science from one centre from one country."

The EU's Horizon 2020 budget is 80-billion Euro which funds medicine and science research across Europe.

Britain's split from the EU will leave a funding gap as well as a brain drain, according to Murphy. He argues it will be the children with autism like Van Velzen who will lose out.

As an island nation, boat building and sales have been important to the UK.

The industry fears rough waters may be ahead for Britain's luxury yacht industry, but right now it's riding on a wave caused by the plunge in the pound's value.

Phil Popham, the CEO of Sunseeker International was cautious: "We've benefited because of the weakness of the pound, but its all about business confidence."

Others like Russell Currie, the Managing Director of Fairline Yachts, says he already had cause to worry: "We've had an overnight decrease in the price of our boats in areas such as the European market."

British Marine's chief executive Howard Pridding tried to show more confidence in the course ahead: "Obviously, industry and business need stability and the time it will take to exit from the European Union will be problematic."

An estimated 1.2 million Britons live in other EU countries, mostly France, Portugal and Spain according to Britain's House of Commons library.

But that's a conservative figure because many expats don't bother registering with their embassies or the local authorities.

At Mijas on Spain's Costa del Sol, many Brits don't want to return to Blighty.

Used to the sun, sea and cafe society, some British residents are so concerned that their lives on the Costas are threatened, that after many years they're finally learning to speak Spanish.

According to Mijas' Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado: "When the results of the Brexit (referendum) were known, a big uncertainty was created."

Local traders are also keen to keep the British on the Costa.

Many are retired and spend their pensions here.

Bar owner Sergio Morales says: "Most of our clients here, around 80% of them, are British."

A cloud of uncertainty still hangs over British expats in Spain and elsewhere in Europe.

And it's possible a string of similar nationality schools for expats may spring up.

Not everyone was bemoaning the onset of Brexit.

The art and antique market experienced a mini boom according to London dealers at this winter fair.

The weak pound against the dollar and Euro has seen American collectors in particular start to snap up bargains with savings of beween 25 and 30 per cent compared with six months ago.

Art dealers are reporting a similar trend.

They say investors see the arts market as a safe refuge in uncertain times.

As Christmas approaches the toy industry is bracing itself and Santa is wondering whether he'll have much to be jolly about.

It's the time of year when manufacturers and retailers count on making their biggest cash bonus of the year.

According to industry analyst Frederique Tutt: "Since the Brexit vote the toy market has been faring really well with an increase of three percent."

That's because toy retailers buy stock almost a year in advance and can keep prices stable, but the toy dealers here admit next year the stockings left out for Father Chrismas may have shrunk considerably.

There's nothing as Christmassy as a Christmas tree, but in Denmark the outlook for tree producers isn't quite so evergreen.

According to the Danish Christmas Tree Association, the small Scandinavian country grows around 11.5 million trees a year.

About 9.5 million of those are exported.

But these are challenging times and currency fluctuations are having an effect on trade.

Speaking about his members, Claus Jerram Christensen of the Danish Christmas Tree Association says: "They have experienced that the low exchange rate for the sterling pound makes it more difficult to achieve the same prices."

The true impact of Brexit on Britain and Europe as a whole is still to an extent unknown.

The UK government had announced it was to trigger Article 50 next March to start negotiations to leave EU.

But since then, Brexit has twice been contested in the High Court.

One ruling has already stated Britain's law makers should be allowed a vote in Parliament beforehand.

Breaking up, it seems, really is hard to do.

There's nothing as Christmassy as a Christmas tree, but in Denmark the outlook for tree producers isn't quite so evergreen.

According to the Danish Christmas Tree Association, the small Scandinavian country grows around 11.5 million trees a year.

About 9.5 million of those are exported.

But these are challenging times and currency fluctuations are having an effect on trade.

Speaking about his members, Claus Jerram Christensen of the Danish Christmas Tree Association says: "They have experienced that the low exchange rate for the sterling pound makes it more difficult to achieve the same prices."

The true impact of Brexit on Britain and Europe as a whole is still to an extent unknown.

The UK government had announced it was to trigger Article 50 next March to start negotiations to leave EU.

But since then, Brexit has twice been contested in the High Court.

With the United Kingdom on the verge of leaving the European Union, a football finance expert and the developer of the Football Manager game talked to SNTV on Thursday about the likely implications for the English Premier League.

Britain will officially leave the EU at 11pm GMT on Friday 31st January, the exact same time and date as the closure of the January transfer window.

Sports Interactive, the developers of the popular 'Football Manager' game, have included various post-Brexit scenarios into the game in the wake of the UK's 2016 EU referendum to assess outcomes of a political decision on the national sport.

Meanwhile, the English Football Association hopes more home-grown players will get game time in the Premier League after Brexit, but the Premier League wants to protect its status as the world's richest soccer competition with teams able to sign talent freely from across Europe.

So for the elite clubs, I think they'll be relatively unaffected. If you take a look at smaller clubs, the likes of Crystal Palace or Bournemouth or Watford, and when they try to recruit from the EU at present, many of those players don't have international caps and they might not be coming from a team which is in the existing UEFA competitions. Their salaries will be significantly lower and it will be that much more difficult for those smaller clubs to recruit."

BRITISH GOVERNMENT ACCUSED OF NOT 'FIGHTING FOR MUSICIANS' IN BREXIT DEAL

The British government "didn't fight for musicians in the way that they ought to have done" in the Brexit deal with the European Union, according to the Chief Executive of non-profit Help Musicians U.K., James Ainscough.

Dozens of U.K. music stars including Elton John, Ed Sheeran and conductor Simon Rattle, along with Ainscough, claim musicians have been “shamefully failed” by the British government, which has left them facing post-Brexit restrictions on touring in the European Union.

In a letter published Wednesday (20 JANUARY 2021) in The Times, more than 100 musicians including Sting, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Roger Daltrey of The Who, along with the heads of major arts institutions, said the new U.K.-EU trade deal that took effect on 1 January has “a gaping hole where the promised free movement for musicians should be.”

"Many, many people in the industry gave them (the British government) very clear warnings about the additional obstructions that there would be post-Brexit, and it was solveable. It was solveable by having the right measures in place in the deal," Ainscough told The Associated Press.

Britain’s departure from the EU means that U.K. citizens can no longer live and work freely in the 27-nation bloc. Tourists do not need visas for stays of up to 90 days, and some short business trips are also allowed, but artists and musicians have not been included in the deal.

Britain and the EU disagree about who is to blame for the omission, each accusing the other of rejecting a deal for touring artists.

The new rules mean U.K. performers have to comply with differing rules in the 27 EU nations, negotiating visas for musicians and permits for their equipment. Many say the costs and red tape will make it impossible for British artists to perform on the continent, endangering the country’s status as a cultural powerhouse.

"It puts up administrative barriers, it creates costs that musicians don't need, and those two things will mean that promoters abroad are less likely to hire British musicians because it's painful for the promoter and it's painful for the musician. So it reduces opportunity, it reduces the ability for musicians to find work, to finance themselves and to build their careers," said Ainscough, whose charity provides help and support to musicians at all stages of their career.

Other signatories to the open letter include Radiohead, Sting, Liam Gallagher, Brian May, Bob Geldof, Glass Animals, The 1975, Sex Pistols, Joss Stone, Simian Mobile Disco, Rag and Bone Man, Superorganism, Roger Plant, Hugh Cornwell, Iron Maiden, Rick Wakeman, Peter Gabriel, Dave Stewart, Brian Eno, Gary Numan, Dame Evelyn Glennie and Glastonbury Festival organizers Michael and Emily Eavis.

The musicians’ letter said the new expense and bureaucracy will make “many tours unviable, especially for young emerging musicians who are already struggling to keep their heads above water owing to the COVID ban on live music.”

"The music industry is part of what makes Britain stand tall on the global stage," said Ainscough. "The British music industry really helps Britain punch above its weight in the global world. It raises our country's status... I do not understand why the government wouldn't want to find a way to support the music industry through the Brexit deal."

Scottish National Party lawmaker Pete Wishart, a former member of rock band Runrig, said Tuesday in the House of Commons that musicians and artists were “mere collateral in this government’s obsession in ending freedom of movement” and controlling immigration once it left the EU.

Culture Minister Caroline Dinenage acknowledged the situation was “incredibly disappointing,” but said “the door is open” to talks with the EU on a deal for musicians. She resisted calls from the opposition to publish details of the proposals made by the U.K. during negotiations that the bloc allegedly rejected.

A senior Facebook executive said on Monday that there was no evidence that Russia influenced the EU referendum result using Facebook.

"Given the evidence of Russian activity around the 2016 US election it was natural for people to ask questions about the Brexit referendum. Facebook took these questions seriously and carried out a thorough investigation and found no evidence of significant outside interference," Sir Nick Clegg said during a speech at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.

The tech giant's vice-president, who started working for the company last October, also said the social media site is in favour of regulation to address some of the dark problems of the internet.

Clegg, the former leader of the UK Liberal Democrat party who now heads global affairs for Facebook, said the company was in favour of some form of regulation to help it address issues such as cyberbullying or fake news.

Lawmakers have been pushing tech companies to take down offensive content more quickly and to do more in general to halt internet harm.

STORYLINE:

A survey of hundreds of corporate leaders shows "a record jump in pessimism" about the world economy, with sentiment doused by trade spats, a global downturn and fading benefits from US President Donald Trump's tax cuts.

The survey, released on Monday on the eve of the World Economic Forum (WEF) opening in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, tallies responses from more than 1,300 CEOs worldwide and is billed as a good predictor of economic results.

"There's a not-surprising increase in the amount of pessimism from the CEOs and the global economy as they look at the next 12 months," PwC Chairman Bob Moritz said.

He said "confidence is waning" amid rising trade tensions and protectionism.

Thirty-five percent of CEOs cited the perennial concern about over-regulation as the top threat to their businesses.

But "policy uncertainty" - a new metric introduced this year - came a close second, the survey found.

The survey of CEOs in 91 territories was conducted online, in person and by phone in September and October (2018).

Moritz also pointed to uncertainty's about Brexit, saying simply: "You never know where these things are going to go."

In the meantime, with trust in governments taking a hit since the global financial crisis, people around the world view their employer as the most trusted institution in their lives, according to a survey published on Monday by public relations firm Edelman.

In an annual survey of trust in institutions that it releases on the eve of the WEF, the firm found that 75 percent of respondents trusted their employer.

That's a hefty 25 percentage points more than the equivalent trust in business as a whole, 40 points more than governments and 20 points more than peers or experts.

Waning trust in public institutions in recent years has accompanied a rise in populist and nationalist politics, from the election of Donald Trump to Britain's vote to leave the European Union (EU) .

The survey also found the largest ever difference in trust in public institutions between wealthier people with college educations and poorer ones without degrees.

Part of the reason is that wealthier individuals could have benefited more from the stock market boom and economic growth of the past few years.

The gap, of 16 percentage points overall, was highest in the UK, at 24 points, illustrating the deep divides in the country as it prepares to leave the EU.

Edelman thinks businesses have to play a central role in restoring trust in institutions.

Edelman's online survey between October 19 2018 and November 16, 2018 took place in 27 markets and involved more than 33,000 respondents.

English pop veteran Chris Difford says record companies and streaming platforms like Spotify need to pay artists a fair rate for their work.

U.K. lawmakers recently heard evidence from the bosses of three major labels - Warner Music Group, Sony Music and Universal - during an inquiry into the business model and economics of music streaming.

The digital, culture, media and sport (DCMS) committee inquiry was told by the record labels that artists were generally happy with the earnings from streaming, though the lawmakers disagreed.

"It's totally criminal," Difford told The Associated Press in a video interview Monday (25 JANUARY 2021), "and the arguments that the record companies came up with were disgusting - to say that they need the money to launch artists, it's simply untrue and unfair.  For many years, I've thought that Spotify was a wonderful tool for people to listen to music and I still do, and in fact, Ed Sheeran wouldn't have broken in South America without Spotify - he admits that.  But it's got to be fairer for people to be given the space to create music, songs, to release them and then to get paid properly."

The singer-songwriter and founding member of British rock group Squeeze also commented on an open letter published in a British newspaper last week, signed by dozens of U.K. music stars including Elton John, Ed Sheeran and conductor Simon Rattle.  It claimed that musicians have been “shamefully failed” by the British government, which has left them facing post-Brexit restrictions on touring in the European Union.

More than 100 musicians including Sting, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Roger Daltrey of The Who, along with the heads of major arts institutions, said the new U.K.-EU trade deal that took effect on 1 January has “a gaping hole where the promised free movement for musicians should be.”

Difford, who is an ambassador for non-profit Help Musicians U.K., believes the government won't pay any attention to the letter.

"The young guys that are in the government who think they know the music industry are really only in it for a photograph.  They don't really understand... and it's ridiculous of them because when you have people like Paul McCartney who sometimes brings in more money than British Steel, you'd think they would nurture people like that and help them grow and keep them in a safe place," he said.

Last week, the CEO of Help Musicians, James Ainscough, said the British government "didn't fight for musicians in the way that they ought to have done" in the Brexit deal with the European Union.

The new rules mean U.K. performers have to comply with differing rules in the 27 EU nations, negotiating visas for musicians and permits for their equipment.  Many say the costs and red tape will make it impossible for British artists to perform on the continent, endangering the country’s status as a cultural powerhouse.

Britain and the EU disagree about who is to blame for the omission, each accusing the other of rejecting a deal for touring artists.

Other signatories to the open letter include Radiohead, Sting, Liam Gallagher, Brian May, Bob Geldof, Glass Animals, The 1975, Sex Pistols, Joss Stone, Simian Mobile Disco, Rag and Bone Man, Superorganism, Roger Plant, Hugh Cornwell, Iron Maiden, Rick Wakeman, Peter Gabriel, Dave Stewart, Brian Eno, Gary Numan, Dame Evelyn Glennie and Glastonbury Festival organizers Michael and Emily Eavis.

The musicians’ letter said the new expense and bureaucracy will make “many tours unviable, especially for young emerging musicians who are already struggling to keep their heads above water owing to the COVID ban on live music.”

Difford says he thinks the British government is doing "the minimum" to help struggling musicians.

"I'm not defending their call at all, but I guess they're not trained to care or have empathy in a way that a psychiatrist might, or a therapist might.  They don't have that.  They didn't study that when they were at Eton (College, a prestigious independent boarding school).  You know, empathy was at the end of the list, so it's a great shame," he said.

Taylor Swift is known for her transparent songwriting, but up until Sunday (7 OCT. 2018), the star had not been known for being transparent about her politics.

That changed when Swift took to Instagram, encouraging her followers_ all 112 million of them_ to register to vote in the midterm elections.

Accompanied by a Polaroid-looking selfie, Swift acknowledged being reluctant to publicly voice her opinions in the past. But she says things are different in recent years, a possible reference to when she went to court last year to testify against a radio DJ who she says groped her.

Then, while accepting the American Music Award for artist of the year on Tuesday, Swift used her speech to encourage fans to vote.

"I just wanted to make a mention at the fact that this award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people, and you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections on November 6."

On the AMAs red carpet, fellow musicians praised Swift for speaking out.

"I want to give her a lot of respect for that because I think if you have not been doing that for so long, any single day you wait longer is harder to then finally make that step," said Zedd.

The record producer said that he tries to remain "open" with his views and encourages others around him to do the same.

"We're no different than anybody else in this world and we have an opinion that matters and I think that it's very valuable to just let people know what you think and even if they disagree, just the conversation that can start and the dialogue is already worth it," said Zedd.  

Recording artist Rita Ora agreed in the importance of using her platform to make a statement.

"I think whatever country you're from, it's really important, like, we're dealing with Brexit right now, back in the U.K. and it's like crazy," said Ora.

The British pop singer has spoken up herself, joining the forces of Ed Sheeran and Bob Geldof writing an anti-Brexit letter to U.K. prime minister Theresa May.

"We have to speak politics to make a change, especially in the industry that we're in because we have the power of the people. And you know, use it for good," said Ora.

Country music star Thomas Rhett said, "I applaud it."

"I just like that she's using her platform to do something that she believes in, you know," said Rhett. "I mean, in every state, if you're not voting than that can really affect the way that you live or your family lives, or whatever."

Zedd saw Swift's post as encouraging positive actions.

"I'm not a fan of propaganda and really telling people what to do, but telling people to do the research, having a dialogue, registering to vote, you're doing nothing but good," he said.

Qatar's finance minister has announced an additional 5 billion pounds (6.3 billion US dollars) in investment in the UK.

Ali Shareef Al Emadi is in London attending a forum to promote business between the two countries.

STORYLINE:

The conference room at the Grosvenor House Hotel is packed for the Qatar-UK Business and Investment Forum.

More than 400 British and Qatari business leaders and senior politicians are attending the event.

The Qatari delegation is led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar.

It's a sign of just how important business is between these two nations - bilateral trade is valued at 5 billion pounds (6.3 billion US dollars) a year.

Qatar already has 35 billion pounds (44 billion US dollars) of existing investment in the UK.

And the country's finance minister has announced that will increase by an extra 5 billion (6.3 billion US dollars) over the next three to five years.

"We're looking at the UK as one of our top 10 trading partners," says Ali Shareef Al Emadi.

"I think the track record for both countries is extremely positive and well received. If you look at what we've done 10, 15 years in the UK it's been an absolutely great story for us."

And British companies have huge investments in Qatar too.

In 2015, UK exports to the Gulf country totalled 2.6 billion pounds (3.3 billion US dollars).

El Amadi says British companies have done "extremely well" in Qatar's hydrocarbon sector, but believes there are also opportunities in infrastructure, technology, health and sport sectors.

UK trade is likely to undergo massive change as it negotiates its exit from the European Union.

Exports of goods and services currently account for about 27 percent of the British economy, with almost half of exports going to the EU.

While some warn Brexit could harm British business, Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox believes it's a chance to look "beyond the boundaries" of Europe.

"This of course means forging new ties and building new relationships with other nations. But perhaps more importantly, to strengthening our commitment to our oldest friends and allies. Qatar is one of the most valued of these," he tells the forum.

Big brands like Qatar Airways are represented at the forum.

And Qatar is heavily invested in British companies too - high end retailer Harrods, Barclays Bank and the iconic London skyscraper The Shard have all received backing.

Private company Al Sawari Holdings has long had a presence in the UK. It has business in a range of industries including real estate, hospitality, construction and manufacturing.

Its chairman Sheikh Turki Bin Faisal Al Thani explains why Britain is such an attractive place to invest.

"It's a very stable market, it's resistant to change. At the same time, it's a diversified market and for us it's also an international hub," he says.

"Our presence here exposes us to more international companies, allows us to develop a stronger network, to even get opportunities to be a part of business outside the UK, through the UK."

And he's cautiously optimistic about post-Brexit Britain.

"Every country has a period of up and down. But we've been with the UK for many years now and I don't think this will change," he says.

"Our investments are always long term so even though we can expect a bit of a dip in the coming years, that's not our vision, our vision is to look in the next 30 years."
