Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Tuesday said she was "disappointed" after Britain's Supreme Court ruled that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will not need to be consulted before starting the process of leaving the European Union.

Speaking in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said, despite the ruling, that it was the UK government's "political obligation...to listen to the devolved administrations."

She also welcomed the news that MPs will vote on the triggering of Article 50.

Campaigners representing the rights of UK citizens living and working in the European Union said they were "delighted and relieved" by Tuesday's ruling at the Supreme Court on the process of leaving the EU.

Britain's government must get parliamentary approval before starting the Brexit process, the court ruled, potentially delaying Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to trigger negotiations by the end of March.

The four day hearing about who has the power to trigger the EU exit - lawmakers or the government- wrapped up in London on Thursday.

The Supreme Court has been asked to rule on a major constitutional issue: Does the power to take Britain out of the EU rest with the executive - May's government - or with Parliament?

The government argued it can use powers known as royal prerogative to invoke Article 50 of the EU's key treaty, the formal trigger for exit talks from the 28-nation bloc.

Speaking after the conclusion of the proceedings Attorney General, Jeremy Wright QC, said there has been a "clear expectation that the outcome of the referendum would be honoured - inside and outside Parliament, before, during and after the referendum campaign".

Lawyers challenging the government say leaving the EU will change Britain's laws and remove citizens' rights, including free movement within the bloc - and that can't be done without legislation in Parliament.

Gina Miller, the lead claimant, said the process has been "emotionally and physically, mentally quite draining" but as the days have gone on she has realised the enormity of the case.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has welcomed Tuesday's Supreme Court ruling that UK parliament should be consulted before the government triggers Article 50 to leave the European Union.

The Labour party leader said he would not block the government's plan to invoke Article 50 by the end of March, saying "it doesn't mean we abdicate the field, it means we then hold the government to account".

Britain's Supreme Court will rule on Tuesday on whether the prime minister or Parliament has the right to trigger the process of taking Britain out of the European Union.

Financial entrepreneur Gina Miller and hairdresser Deir Dos Santos went to court to argue that leaving the EU will remove some of their rights, including free movement within the bloc, and that shouldn't be done without Parliament's approval.

Last month, three High Court judges agreed.

But the government says they have misinterpreted the law.

Government lawyers led by Attorney General Jeremy Wright will argue this week that the British people have spoken by voting in a June 23 referendum to leave the EU.

They say a parliamentary vote would mean getting lawmakers "to answer precisely the same question which was put by Parliament to the electorate and has been answered in the referendum."

Many legal experts say the government will likely lose its appeal and be forced to give Parliament a vote.

In a reflection of the constitutional importance of the case - which hinges on the balance of power between Parliament and the executive - all 11 Supreme Court judges will hear the appeal, the first time the full court has sat since it was founded in 2009.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he strongly disagrees with the Supreme Court ruling that Parliament's suspension was illegal.

He says the government will respect the decision but indicated he could try to suspend it again.

Johnson said in New York Tuesday that "I strongly disagree with this decision of the Supreme Court" and "I don't think this was the right decision."

He added: "It's perfectly usual to have a Queen's Speech, that's what we want to do."

The Queen's Speech outlines the government's plan for the coming session of Parliament.

Johnson's office meanwhile said he will not resign.

Downing St. said Johnson will fly back from a U.N. General Assembly in New York overnight, earlier than planned.

That will bring him back to London by the time Parliament resumes on Wednesday.

This comes as UK House of Commons Speaker John Bercow welcomed the Supreme Court's ruling that the suspension of Parliament was illegal and said that members are set to resume their work on Wednesday morning.

He said citizens are "entitled" to have Parliament perform its core constitutional duties.

Whitle an anti-government protester outside the court welcomed the ruling and said MP's should go back to Parliament as soon as possible.

"We are in a national crisis right now, and we leave the European Union in just over a month so we need to get back in there and start talking about it because if we don't then we're gonna have some big problems," said Jacob Archbold.

Pro-Brexit demonstrators, meanwhile, chanted slogans of support for Johnson.

But Brexit supporter Michael McFadden also said that Johnson and the Conservatives had "destroyed themselves" and accused former Prime Minister Theresa May of making Brexit backers "look a bunch of fools and we are not a bunch of fools."

The landmark decision immediately prompted calls for Johnson to quit.

Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson has denied lying to Queen Elizabeth II when advising her to prorogue - or suspend -parliament for a five-week period.

"Absolutely not," Johnson said Thursday, while visiting a London dockyard to announce a new shipbuilding programme.

His comment came after a Scottish court dealt another blow to his Brexit plans Wednesday, ruling that his decision to suspend Parliament less than two months before the UK is due to leave the European Union was an unlawful attempt to avoid democratic scrutiny.

He stressed that the government will appeal the decision, adding that there is still "plenty of time" for lawmakers to debate the departure.

With Brexit due in 50 days, Johnson insists the country must leave the EU on October 31, with or without a divorce deal - but many lawmakers fear a no-deal would be economically devastating.

Johnson on Thursday said the government's assessment there could be food and medicine shortages, gridlock at ports and riots in the streets if there is a no-deal Brexit, was is a worst-case scenario, rather than something that was likely to happen.

He said the bleak scenario detailed in the government's no-deal contingency plan, code-named Operation Yellowhammer, was "not where we intend to end up."

"This is a worst-case scenario which civil servants obviously have to prepare for, but in the last few months, and particularly in the 50 days since I've been prime minister, we've been massively accelerating our preparations," Johnson said.

He insisted a departure deal with the EU was possible by October 31.

We need a Queen's Speech, we need to get on and do all sorts of things at a national level. We've got a fantastic... here we are, discussing shipbuilding. We're going to be launching five new (Royal Navy) Type-31 frigates. We're going to need bills on education, on health, on housing, on technology, on our vision for investing in science, the space programme, all the things that we want to do on environment, stopping the export of waste overseas and plastics. There are a huge number of things that we want to get on with and do. You can't do them (as things stand right now). We've been going on in this parliament now for longer than any time since the Civil War (in the 1600s). We need a Queen's Speech. We need to to get on with things. And Parliament will have time - both before and after - that crucial (EU) summit on October 17-18 to talk about the Brexit deal. I'm very hopeful that we will get a deal, as I say, at that crucial summit. We're working very hard, I've been around European capitals talking to our friends, I think we can see the rough area of a landing space of how you could do it. It will be tough. It will be hard. But I think we can get there. And the crucial thing is, if we can't get a deal, and I really hope we can, if we can't, then we will be ready to come out on October 31, deal or no-deal, and that's what this is all about."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he strongly disagrees with the Supreme Court ruling that Parliament's suspension was illegal.

He said the government will respect the decision but indicated he could try to suspend it again.

"It's an unusual judgment to come to, in my view. Parliament has used prorogation for many... the prerrogative of prorogation is a very old one and it's not I think been contested before in this way,"Johnson said in New York, where he was attending the U.N. General Assembly.

Johnson did not rule out trying to suspend Parliament again.

"I don't think that the justices remotely excluded the possibility of having a Queen's Speech but what we will certainly do is ensure that Parliament has plenty of time to debate Brexit," Johnson said.

The unanimous, strongly worded Supreme Court judgment on Tuesday declared Johnson's order to suspend Parliament "void and of no effect."

The court found that Johnson acted to limit debate by lawmakers on Britain's impending departure from the European Union in violation of Parliament's constitutional role.

Johnson's office said, due to the ruling, the prime minister will fly back to London overnight from New York, earlier than planned, arriving by the time Parliament resumes.

Liberal Democrats leader Jo Swinson says Boris Johnson is "not fit to be prime minister" following Tuesday's ruling by the Supreme Court that his move to suspend Parliament was unlawful.

"He is not fit for office, he should resign," said Swinson, speaking from Glasgow.

She added that Parliament should sit as soon as Wednesday.

The unanimous Supreme Court judgment declared the order to suspend Parliament "void and of no effect."

The landmark decision has immediately prompted calls for Johnson to quit.

LEADIN:

US President Donald Trump will pay a state visit to Britain this month as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II.

It will be the latest chapter in the president's relationship with the UK.

STORYLINE:

An oath of office and a promise to the people of the United States to "Make America Great Again".

Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States, January 2017.

Only a week into his administration, on January 27, Prime Minister Theresa May was the first foreign leader to visit Trump.

A signature welcome, May and Trump got straight to business, holding a joint news conference in the Oval Office in Washington.

Both spoke of mutual cooperation between the two countries and agreed to "lay the groundwork for a UK-US trade agreement."

"I'm convinced that a trade deal between the US and the UK is in the national interest of both countries, and will cement the crucial relationship that exists between us, particularly as the UK leaves the European Union and reaches out to the world," said May.

"I can often tell how I get along with someone very early, and I think we're going to have a fantastic relationship," confirmed Trump.

Hand in hand, the UK-US relations were solidified.

Hours before May's arrival, Trump signed an executive order blocking entry to the UK for citizens from some predominantly Muslim countries.

The order suspended all travel to the US for citizens of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen.

This erupted worldwide protests and ignited criticism of May's visit to the US.

April 2018 - it was announced that Trump would make a "working" visit to the UK on July 13th.

Taking the form of a giant "Trump Baby", preparations were underway ahead of his arrival.

Protesters organised an unflattering blimp for the president's visit.

July 12, Trump and his wife and first Lady Melania arrived at Stansted.

To greet them that evening, May and her husband Phillip May stood side-by-side at Blenheim palace's grand entrance.

That evening they enjoyed a lavish dinner with guests and owners Jamie Blandford and his wife Edla Griffiths.

While Melania Trump tried her hand at the centuries-old game of bowls while visiting the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, Trump visited May's country residence, which is 40 miles (65 kilometres) from London.

May welcomed the president to Chequers in Buckinghamshire July 13.

The meeting was expected to be unusually tense after The Sun newspaper published an interview with Trump on Thursday night (July 12).

Trump was quoted as saying he didn't agree with her Brexit plan and backed Boris Johnson to be the next British Prime Minister.

But in front of the cameras, he had nothing but praise for May.

"This incredible woman right here is doing a fantastic job, a great job, and, I mean that. And I must say that I have gotten to know Theresa May much better over the last two days than I've known her over the last year and a half. I mean we've spent more time in the last two days. Yesterday I had breakfast, lunch and dinner with her, then I said 'What are we doing tomorrow?' which is today, 'Oh you're having breakfast and lunch with Theresa May.'"

"The only thing I ask of Theresa is that we make sure we can trade that we don't have any restrictions because we want to trade with the UK and the UK wants to trade with us."

That afternoon, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II welcomed Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to Windsor Castle.

A military band honoured Trump with a royal salute before playing the US national anthem.

The Queen and Trump then inspected the guard of honour before entering the castle where they were scheduled to spend about 30 minutes getting acquainted over a cup of tea.

The palace confirmed plans that Trump will make a state visit to the UK, June 3 2019.

Some of the traditional trappings of an official state visit are likely being scaled back.

Typically one of the highlights is a carriage ride procession that brings the visiting dignitary to the Buckingham Palace grounds escorted by a large number of mounted soldiers from the Household Cavalry as gun salutes are made from nearby Green Park and the Tower of London.

Officials have not said whether that will happen this time, and it may be truncated or eliminated in part due to concerns that a slow-moving procession of horse-drawn carriages could prove an irresistible target for protesters.

The president and first lady are also not going to stay at Buckingham Palace, where state visitors usually lodge, apparently because of renovations that are underway at the 775 room official residence of the Queen.

They are expected to stay at Winfield House, the spacious home of the U.S. ambassador, which has a private garden nearly as spacious as the palace grounds.

The Trumps and their grown children are expected to meet the younger generation of royals, including Prince William, a future king, and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Harry is also set to meet the Trumps, but his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is expected to be at home with their son Archie.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May extended the invitation for a state visit more than two years ago, but the trip has been deferred amid concerns about the president's reception and Britain's extended crisis over Brexit.

The lead plaintiff in the British Supreme Court case said on Tuesday that she was shocked by the level of personal abuse she experienced for bringing the case after Britain voted to leave the EU in a June referendum

Gina Miller spoke shortly after the Supreme Court announced in a majority 8-3 decision that the government must get parliamentary approval before starting the process of leaving the European Union.

The financial entrepreneur had sued to force the government to seek Parliamentary approval before invoking Article 50.

Leaving the EU will change the fundamental rights of citizens and this can't be done without a vote of lawmakers, she had argued.

The UK's opposition Labour Party leader told his party conference that Tuesday's court decision showed that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson acted illegally when "he tried to shut down democratic debate and accountability at a crucial moment for our public life".

Jeremy Corbyn said that entertaining the prospect of a no deal Brexit had been "reckless and disasterous", and called on Johnson to resign.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced new calls to resign after the country's Supreme Court ruled his suspension of Parliament was illegal.

Speaking outside the court, Scottish National Party MP Joanna Cherry, a leading figure who fought the suspension, said Johnson's position is now "untenable," as a result of the ruling.

Cherry also described the court's decision as "momentus" and said it was a "huge victory for the rule of law and for democracy."
