Leader of the British Liberal Democrat party Tim Farron met with the European Parliament's lead Brexit negotiator, Guy Verhofstadt in Brussels on Wednesday.

The two men discussed whether or not article 50 can be revoked, according to Farron.

While Verhofstadt called for the British to show some reciprocity once Britain formally makes it's request to leave the EU, saying "We will not undo the European Union. We will not destroy it."

Farron and his political party believe the British public should be allowed to vote on another referendum once the negotiations have finished between the EU and UK.

"We discussed a number of issues, not least the issue of whether or not Article 50 can be revocable. I think that is not yet clear. My personal view is, if the political will is there on both sides of the (English) Channel so to speak, then of course it should be. UK Liberal Democrat MP and former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has welcomed a Supreme Court ruling that parliament should be consulted before government triggers article 50 to leave the European Union.

Clegg said a referendum should also be held on the terms of leaving the EU, and that he will vote against the triggering of article 50 unless that is given.

He also criticised Prime Minister Theresa May for allowing the case to get to the courts at the expense of tax payers.

The chief of the NATO military alliance on Wednesday said that Britain remaining in the European Union was key for trans-Atlantic security and common efforts to fight violent extremism.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told The Associated Press that it was "up to the people of Great Britain to decide whether to remain or leave".

But, he added, "a strong UK in a strong Europe" was not only beneficial for Britain, but also for NATO.

Stoltenberg said that to face a daunting array of contemporary security threats, "we need a strong Europe and a strong NATO together".

He added that "the UK is key in making sure that that happens".

Stoltenberg spoke to The AP in Brussels, a day before British voters cast their ballot in a referendum on EU membership.

And the United Kingdom is a leader, both inside NATO, but also inside the European Union, when it comes to pushing for enhanced cooperation between NATO and the European Union, but also being a strong advocate for the trans-Atlantic cooperation. "We are ready to have a meeting before... sorry... a meeting of the Russia/NATO Council before the Warsaw Summit. I am not certain whether that is possible to have before the summit, but hopefully we will be able to have it shortly after the summit. We are now in dialogue with Russia on the agenda, on the modalities. The important thing is that we need the NATO/Russia Council to have a chance of political dialogue open with Russia and especially when tensions are high. It is important that we talk, that we meet and that we do whatever we can to prevent misunderstandings, miscalculations, and try to reduce tensions. And we had a meeting of the NATO/Russia Council a few weeks ago. I think that was a very useful meeting. We discussed Ukraine, we addressed military activities, transparency, but also Afghanistan. British politician Nigel Farage said that after meeting with the chief European Union Brexit negotiator, he felt that Michel Barnier didn't understand why people had voted to leave the bloc.

"I really don't think he gets it," Farage told reporters outside the European Commission building on Monday, adding Barnier did not understand that open door immigration had been a key issue for voters.

He said it would be better for both parties to get a deal but that it would be worst for business if talks dragged on for years and that he has heard businesspeople expressing a will to revert back to World Trade Organisation rules.

"We didn't vote for transition deals," Farage, a European Parliament lawmaker for the U.K. Independence Party, said.

"We didn't vote to sort of kick this into the long grass so that it's at least going to be six years from Brexit before we could decide a trade deal with anybody else or have any degree of control over our borders with the rest of the European Union."

Farage campaigned for years to take Brexit from a fringe cause to a reality.

Meanwhile British Prime Minister Theresa May started the new political year with a shake-up of her Cabinet, trying to bolster her authority ahead of a crucial new phase in Brexit negotiations.

She was reportedly expected to appoint a Cabinet minister for a "no deal" Brexit.
