Reactions were mixed among leave and remain protesters after Britain's Parliament voted Thursday to seek a delay of the country's departure from the European Union - a move that will likely avert a chaotic withdrawal on the scheduled exit date of March 29.

Hundreds of protesters were seen demonstrating outside London's Parliament on Thursday, with pro-Brexit supporters carrying placards reading "Leave means leave" and anti-Brexit campaigners holding up EU flags.

Remain supporter Val Astles told the Associated Press that delaying the EU departure was "good news," adding "we needed a delay."  

Another anti-Brexit supporter, Peter Beagan, said he thinks the UK needs a much longer extension, stressing that he did not think Prime Minister Theresa May's deal would ever be approved in Parliament.

Members of the UK Indpendence Party, UKIP, were present to voice their opposition against a delayed departure.

Before the vote took place, UKIP leader Gerrard Batten said, "if Parliament now votes to ask for an extension to Article 50, then that will be the basic betrayal of the referendum and the British people who voted to leave."

He added, "What they (the governemnt) will do is they will ask for an extension to Article 50 on the basis that this can be extended indefinitely so eventually the whole referendum can be overturned."

Footage from after Thursday's vote showed one UKIP member swearing at remain campaigners, and police at the scene working to maintain calm.

With Brexit due in 15 days and no divorce deal yet approved, the House of Commons voted 413-202 to ask the bloc to put off Britain's exit until at least June 30.

The official result was initially announced as 412-202, but was later amended to 413 in the official voting list.

Power to approve or reject the extension lies with the EU, which has signaled that it will only allow a delay if Britain either approves a divorce deal or makes a fundamental shift in its approach to Brexit.

Leave and remain campaigners gathered outside Britain's Parliament on Thursday, as the government announced it will try again next week to trigger an election after its first attempt was rejected by Parliament.

Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg said a vote will be held Monday on a motion calling for a snap poll.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to hold an election to break the country's Brexit impasse, but opposition lawmakers are refusing to support him unless he lifts his threat to take Britain out of the EU on Oct. 31 without a divorce agreement.

Parliament is currently passing a law that would compel the government to seek a delay to Brexit rather than crash out on Halloween, with opposition Labour Party saying that once the bill becomes law - expected to happen Monday - the party will agree to a new election.

Reactions to the political turmoil were mixed among demonstrators at London's Parliament Square on Thursday.

"I think, at the moment, the issue is around the election. It would make it a Brexit election, quite frankly," pro-remain campaigner Jayne Keane said.

Leave campaigner Miroslav Schonauer criticised the Labour party for not respecting the people's vote in the 2016 EU referendum, when seeking to delay Brexit and voting against Johnson's proposed snap election.

"The only thing this means is that Corbyn wants to stop Brexit," Schonauer said. "First, they refused the deal (put forth by former Prime Minister Theresa May), now they are ruling out No-Deal. So what's the third option?" he added.

UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage on July 4th said he is resigning as the head of the party, arguing his political ambition to have Britain leave the European Union (EU) had now been achieved.

Farage said he will retain his seat in the European Parliament to see out the negotiations for Britain's exit from the EU, following the country's June 23rd vote to leave the bloc.

It is the second time Farage has resigned as leader of the party, but he said this time it would be permanent.

Jeremy Corbyn was re-elected leader of Britain's Labour Party on September 24th.

Increasing his margin from the 2015 leadership contest, Corbyn was elected with 61.8 percent of the membership's vote, receiving a total of 313,209 ballots.

His sole opponent, Owen Smith - who was Corbyn's Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions until 27 June - received the remaining 193,229 votes.

The left-wing incumbent was strongly favoured to defeat challenger Smith and retain leadership of the party, after a so-called 'coup' was launched against Corbyn by sitting Labour lawmakers following the Brexit vote in June.

The leadership contest was fraught with online name-calling and allegations that the leadership of the strongly pro-Palestinian Corbyn has fostered anti-Semitic abuse in the party.

Since his first election as Labour leader just over a year ago, tens of thousands more new members have flocked to Labour, many of them young and enthusiastic.

Corbyn draws big crowds to rallies and meetings, and his supporters are a formidable force on social media.

Protesters on Tuesday marched through the streets around Westminster while lawmakers inside the House of Commons confronted UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson over his plan to leave the EU on October 31 with or without a deal.

As protesters on the streets outside Parliament denounced a "coup," the lawmakers turned to a key piece of legislation that would prevent an immediate no-deal Brexit.

Amongst those chanting and blocking roads was Sussex resident Jane Berry, who expressed concern over Johnson's right-hand man, political adviser Dominic Cummings.

"We've got an unelected person, Dominic Cummings, who's been found in contempt of parliament and he wouldn't answer questions on how they subverted democracy during the referendum vote," stressed Berry.

"How did we get to here? We supposed to be a democracy, we're suppose to be the oldest democracy."

Another protester, life coach Annette Shaw, from Oxford, said she was on holiday in German when the UK prime minister called to prorogue parliament.

"I was devastated," said Shaw.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in central London on Saturday to call for a new referendum on the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union.

Organisers want the public to have a final say on the government's Brexit deal with the EU, arguing that new facts have come to light about the costs and complexity of Britain's exit from the bloc since Britons voted to leave in 2016.

The UK is scheduled to leave the EU on 29 March, but negotiations have been plagued by disagreements, particularly over the issue of the land border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Hundreds of people gathered in the German city of Frankfurt on Sunday at a rally in support of the European Union.

The demonstration was organised by a group called Pulse of Europe, which was founded in Frankfurt at the end of 2016 and now hosts rallies and demonstrations across Europe.

Pulse of Europe founder Daniel Roeder said that that Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as US President "motivated" him to start to "preventively demonstrate" ahead of elections in various European countries.

Roeder added that "the threat for democracy" was "democrats remain silent", which his group aims to address.

The group says it isn't tied to any particular political party.
