LEAD IN:

For decades Britain's discontent over its European Union (EU) membership has simmered on, but then came the June referendum.

Nationalism surfaced and Britain's voted to leave the EU.

Brexit as it became known sent shockwaves through money markets and governments around the world.

STORY-LINE:

In the weeks running up to referendum judgement day, the British were busy with a little soul searching.

Mulling over their shared history, the country's pride in their democracy and heritage.

It was a year when Queen Elizabeth celebrated being the longest reigning UK monarch and the country celebrated her ninetieth birthday.

The pomp and ceremony from her recent jubilee were still a source of pride and were reminiscent of the heydays when London style was considered to be world leading.

In the 1960's British fashion and British pop were riding high.

That sense of being at the vanguard of style has continued, according to Robert Johnston the Fashion Director of GQ Magazine: "You also think street scene, you think east London, you think hipsters, you think the most vibrant street fashion possibly in the world."

Author Iain Aitch explained how a variety of heritages were now mixed up, making Britishness a more complex idea to communicate: "Everyone might say a Sunday roast or fish and chips, that's a quintessentially British meal, but then suddenly everyone says it's chicken tikka masala."

But it wasn't this hipster, Brick Lane art and curry house side of Britain that won the vote.

The referendum on June 23rd was to signal the start of a long debate.

Britons for the first time had to absorb what being outside of the EU looked like.

Britain joined what was then called the European Economic Community in January 1973.

This was ratified by a referendum in 1975 with a resounding 67% majority.

By the seventies, Britain was beset by strikes and disgruntled union workers.

Traditional industries such as manufacturing and coal were in decline in the mid seventies.

Unemployment exceeded one million for the first time in March 1975. By the August that figure had increased to 1.25 million.

Some 83,000 immigrants were living in the UK by 1975, mostly from the Commonwealth.

According to Migration Watch UK for the year ending December 2015, net migration to the UK was 333,000.

And the lady had yet to turn. Margaret Thatcher MP (then leader of the opposition) campaigned to stay in the European Economic Community.

Later as prime minister between 1979 and 1990, Thatcher was known for her tough line with Brussels, especially during negotiations for the Maastrict Treaty in 1992.

The city of Maastrict is the home of the treaty which created the EU.

As summer arrived, businesses, leading universities and research establishments were beginning to assess the impact of Brexit.

For science and medicine, concerns were two fold.

Britain had attracted thousands of top researchers as well as billions of Euros in grants.

They went into research like this at Kings College London.

This project is a multidisciplinary look at the potential causes and effects of autism. It's a long term project which is linked to other studies across Europe.

Doctors and scientists aren't worried about losing cash in the short term, but falling behind in the knowledge race in the long term, especially as Britain has sought to place itself as a central base for the new industrial technologies.

The other fear is losing the brains which have been drawn to British research, people who now fear they will need to move to other institutions to keep up with the cash and the research.

Lead scientist at King's College Professor Declan Murphy warned: "Big questions need big populations to come up with the right answers, and we simply cannot deliver the amount of patients for the amount of science from one centre from one country."

The EU's Horizon 2020 budget is 80-billion Euro which funds medicine and science research across Europe.

Britain's split from the EU will leave a funding gap as well as a brain drain, according to Murphy. He argues it will be the children with autism like Van Velzen who will lose out.

As an island nation, boat building and sales have been important to the UK.

The industry fears rough waters may be ahead for Britain's luxury yacht industry, but right now it's riding on a wave caused by the plunge in the pound's value.

Phil Popham, the CEO of Sunseeker International was cautious: "We've benefited because of the weakness of the pound, but its all about business confidence."

Others like Russell Currie, the Managing Director of Fairline Yachts, says he already had cause to worry: "We've had an overnight decrease in the price of our boats in areas such as the European market."

British Marine's chief executive Howard Pridding tried to show more confidence in the course ahead: "Obviously, industry and business need stability and the time it will take to exit from the European Union will be problematic."

An estimated 1.2 million Britons live in other EU countries, mostly France, Portugal and Spain according to Britain's House of Commons library.

But that's a conservative figure because many expats don't bother registering with their embassies or the local authorities.

At Mijas on Spain's Costa del Sol, many Brits don't want to return to Blighty.

Used to the sun, sea and cafe society, some British residents are so concerned that their lives on the Costas are threatened, that after many years they're finally learning to speak Spanish.

According to Mijas' Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado: "When the results of the Brexit (referendum) were known, a big uncertainty was created."

Local traders are also keen to keep the British on the Costa.

Many are retired and spend their pensions here.

Bar owner Sergio Morales says: "Most of our clients here, around 80% of them, are British."

A cloud of uncertainty still hangs over British expats in Spain and elsewhere in Europe.

And it's possible a string of similar nationality schools for expats may spring up.

Not everyone was bemoaning the onset of Brexit.

The art and antique market experienced a mini boom according to London dealers at this winter fair.

The weak pound against the dollar and Euro has seen American collectors in particular start to snap up bargains with savings of beween 25 and 30 per cent compared with six months ago.

Art dealers are reporting a similar trend.

They say investors see the arts market as a safe refuge in uncertain times.

As Christmas approaches the toy industry is bracing itself and Santa is wondering whether he'll have much to be jolly about.

It's the time of year when manufacturers and retailers count on making their biggest cash bonus of the year.

According to industry analyst Frederique Tutt: "Since the Brexit vote the toy market has been faring really well with an increase of three percent."

That's because toy retailers buy stock almost a year in advance and can keep prices stable, but the toy dealers here admit next year the stockings left out for Father Chrismas may have shrunk considerably.

There's nothing as Christmassy as a Christmas tree, but in Denmark the outlook for tree producers isn't quite so evergreen.

According to the Danish Christmas Tree Association, the small Scandinavian country grows around 11.5 million trees a year.

About 9.5 million of those are exported.

But these are challenging times and currency fluctuations are having an effect on trade.

Speaking about his members, Claus Jerram Christensen of the Danish Christmas Tree Association says: "They have experienced that the low exchange rate for the sterling pound makes it more difficult to achieve the same prices."

The true impact of Brexit on Britain and Europe as a whole is still to an extent unknown.

The UK government had announced it was to trigger Article 50 next March to start negotiations to leave EU.

But since then, Brexit has twice been contested in the High Court.

One ruling has already stated Britain's law makers should be allowed a vote in Parliament beforehand.

Breaking up, it seems, really is hard to do.

There's nothing as Christmassy as a Christmas tree, but in Denmark the outlook for tree producers isn't quite so evergreen.

According to the Danish Christmas Tree Association, the small Scandinavian country grows around 11.5 million trees a year.

About 9.5 million of those are exported.

But these are challenging times and currency fluctuations are having an effect on trade.

Speaking about his members, Claus Jerram Christensen of the Danish Christmas Tree Association says: "They have experienced that the low exchange rate for the sterling pound makes it more difficult to achieve the same prices."

The true impact of Brexit on Britain and Europe as a whole is still to an extent unknown.

The UK government had announced it was to trigger Article 50 next March to start negotiations to leave EU.

But since then, Brexit has twice been contested in the High Court.

One ruling has already stated Britain's law makers should be allowed a vote in Parliament beforehand.

Breaking up, it seems, really is hard to do.

With Brexit looming, fears are growing that border controls between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic could become a reality.  

If that happens among the worst affected industries in the border areas will be tourism which relies heavily on ease of travel between the two jurisdictions.   

STORY-LINE:

Just four kilometres (2.5 miles) south of the border with Northern Ireland, Belturbet in Co. Cavan in the Irish Republic is on the front line of the Brexit crisis.  

Tourism, in particular fishing and boat cruising, is the town's biggest industry, drawing in visitors from Europe and from all around Ireland both north and south.

During the Troubles, tourism in Belturbet was in decline, but since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement which ended the conflict, things have been looking up.  

Investment in tourism infrastructure rose - including the construction of a new marina - drawing in visitors keen to explore the region known for its scenic lakes and rivers.  

But with Brexit looming locals are worried that the tourism industry could be badly affected.  

Cruising company ABC Boats has a base at Belturbet and another one over the border at Aghinver in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

Just outside Belturbet, the Erne River marks the border itself, with one river bank in Northern Ireland and the other in the Republic of Ireland, illustrating the complexity of the issue which has stalled Brexit.

ABC's Sean Greenan, who manages the Belturbet Marina, says he's worried that European visitors in particular will stay away if Brexit results in new border controls.

"Our…majority of our customers come from…from Europe. So you have, you have German, eh Austrian, Switzerland, you know that's…that's ninety percent of our customers em, what way are they going to react? This is what we need to ask ourselves. What way are they going to react looking at coming to Ireland after Brexit?"  

The removal of the militarised border in 1998 increased cross border trade and fuelled economic growth which has benefited people both north and south.

The Senator George Mitchell Peace Bridge marking the border just outside the town has become a potent symbol of north/south co-operation.

Opened in 1999 as a replacement for another bridge which was blown up during the Troubles, today cars and trucks travel across the border without hindrance.

The only way to tell that you have crossed the border is road markings which change on the bridge from white in Northern Ireland to yellow in the Republic of Ireland.

If a new border is constructed this marks the spot where locals fear security infrastructure will reappear stifling cross border co-operation.   

35 kilometres up river from Belturbet is Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland,  which is also heavily reliant on tourism.   

Most visitors to Enniskillen travel up from the Republic of Ireland and locals are concerned that that could be jeopardised by Brexit.

Terry McCartney is the Managing Director of the Belmore Court & Motel, one of the largest hotels in the town.

"People flying into Ireland mostly fly into Dublin. Eh once they get into Dublin if they want to come north they have to hire a car. Will there be a border? Will there not be a border? Will they be able to bring their car across the border? Will they need a visa to come across the border? So those are all issues in terms of guests and residents em. But on top of that then we also have the issue of workers em. We have a number of jobs which are filled mainly by people who work…or who come from outside the UK and Ireland. After Brexit will those people be able to stay? Will be be able to get additional people to do those important jobs in in the accommodation sector? So em those are big issues for us and definitely very uncertain."

Back on the River Erne linking Belturbet and Enniskillen, life continues on at its leisurely pace, at least for now.

It's the years of uncertainty surrounding Brexit that have been the the biggest problem facing businesses like ABC Boats, says manager Sean Greenan.

"What we need as a company here, and what our clients need - knowledge. We need to know what's going to happen next year. We're going to want to need to know what's going to happen the following year. And at the end of the day we've got to deal with whatever that is. But we've got to know. You can't deal with anything until you know about it."

Protecting the many gains made under the Good Friday Agreement and avoiding the return of a hard border are the most important things going forward, says Brendan Fey a local politician and pub owner.

"I believed that we were going to be an economic island - cross border, health, electricity, phones, everything. It has thrown everything up now, we have to get back to that. People talk about a united Ireland - I would just park that, that's not important just at the moment. The important thing is that we don't have borders anywhere on this island."   

The UK is due to leave the European Union on October 31st.  The British government is currently still trying to thrash out a deal with the European Union ahead or the EU summit on October 17-18.

PATRICK STEWART GIVES SPEECH AT ANTI-BREXIT RALLY

Actor Patrick Stewart gave a speech backing the tens of thousands of protestors who marched through London on Saturday (19 OCTOBER 2019), calling for a second referendum on the terms of the U.K. Prime Minister's new European Union divorce deal.

Protesters, many wearing blue berets emblazoned with yellow stars symbolizing the EU flag, marched to Parliament Square as lawmakers debated Prime Minister Boris Johnson's new deal.

The "Star Trek" amd "X-Men" star was one of several speakers adressing the rally in Parliament Square.

"It's happening now," he said, motioning to Westminster.

"18 months ago, I stood in an old nightclub in Camden Town and I spoke to 1000 enthusiasts, if skeptical, audience members. I told them that no matter what happens, Brexit will shape the future of this country for decades to come. I told them that Brexit was going to be delivered and will be nothing like what was promised in 2016. I told them how peace in Europe was still a cause worth fighting for. And thus, on that warm April day, the People's Vote campaign was born," he told protestors.

"Over the last 18 months in every region, the nation of this great United Kingdom. We've made the democratic case for a people's vote.  Because let me let me be clear. There was nothing democratic about that referendum," he continued. "People weren't just misled, they were lied to."

Lawmakers Saturday voted to postpone a decision on whether to back a proposed Brexit deal with the European Union, voting 322-306 to withhold their approval on the deal until legislation to implement it has been passed.

The vote aims to ensure that the U.K. can't crash out of the EU without a divorce deal on the scheduled Oct. 31 departure date.

STORYLINE:

The Lithuanian President blamed Brexit of "spoiling" discussions at the Munich Security Conference.

Speaking on a panel on Friday at the annual gathering of diplomats and defence officials, Dalia Grybauskaite said the United Kingdom leaving the European Union had become an additional challenge that needs to be solved.

While Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Witold Waszczykowski, called on the European Union to reflect on the causes of Brexit and the state of the European Union.

The politicians were speaking on the first day of the conference which will see German Chancellor Angela Merkel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, European Council President Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg attend as well as more than 30 heads of state and government, 80 foreign and defence ministers and other officials.

Thousands of European Union supporters are singing, dancing and marching through the streets of London to protest the United Kingdom's vote to leave the EU.

July 2nd's two-mile (three-kilometre) "March for Europe" from Hyde Park to Parliament was organised on social media.

Many of the marchers say they expect lawmakers to block any moves to leave the 28-nation bloc, a move backed by 52 percent of voters in the June 23rd referendum.

UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage on July 4th said he is resigning as the head of the party, arguing his political ambition to have Britain leave the European Union (EU) had now been achieved.

Farage said he will retain his seat in the European Parliament to see out the negotiations for Britain's exit from the EU, following the country's June 23rd vote to leave the bloc.

It is the second time Farage has resigned as leader of the party, but he said this time it would be permanent.

British Prime Minister David Cameron left Number 10 Downing Street on July 13th to attend his last session of Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons.

Theresa May will replace him as Prime Minister later in the day.

Jeremy Corbyn was re-elected leader of Britain's Labour Party on September 24th.

Increasing his margin from the 2015 leadership contest, Corbyn was elected with 61.8 percent of the membership's vote, receiving a total of 313,209 ballots.

His sole opponent, Owen Smith - who was Corbyn's Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions until 27 June - received the remaining 193,229 votes.

The left-wing incumbent was strongly favoured to defeat challenger Smith and retain leadership of the party, after a so-called 'coup' was launched against Corbyn by sitting Labour lawmakers following the Brexit vote in June.

The leadership contest was fraught with online name-calling and allegations that the leadership of the strongly pro-Palestinian Corbyn has fostered anti-Semitic abuse in the party.

Since his first election as Labour leader just over a year ago, tens of thousands more new members have flocked to Labour, many of them young and enthusiastic.

Corbyn draws big crowds to rallies and meetings, and his supporters are a formidable force on social media.

STORY

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will step down as Conservative Party leader on June 7, sparking a contest to replace her as party chief and U.K. leader.

Contenders to the leadership role are starting to emerge inside the Conservative party.

Three of those who have officially thrown their hat into the ring are former London Mayor and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, former Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey and newly appointed International Development Secretary Rory Stewart.

Known for his gaffes and less than diplomatic stances on several issues, the Eton and Oxford educated Johnson was one of the faces of the Leave campaign and remains a polarising character.

He had been going for the Prime Minister position after David Cameron's resignation but stopped short of announcing his candidacy when his campaign manager Michael Gove decided to pull his backing at the last minute.

He was named Foreign Secretary in July 2016 and quit the post in July 2018 over Theresa May's approach to the Brexit process.

Returning to Parliament as a back bencher, he continued to campaign for an alternative to May's Brexit plans.

Esther McVey was a member of Parliament from 2010, serving later as Cameron's Under-Secretary of State for Disabilities in 2012 before taking up the post of Minister of State for Employment the following year.

She later moved on to become the Chair of the British Transport Police Authority and  Deputy Chief Government Whip, becoming Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in January 2018.

A staunch Brexit backer, she quit the post in November over Theresa May's handling of the process.

On Monday McVey launched the Blue Collar Conservatism group to woe working class voters, pledging to make cuts to the overseas aid budget to fund domestic budgets such as education and police instead.

McVey wants to see Britain leave the EU by the end of October even if that means leaving without a deal.

Newly appointed International Development Secretary Rory Stewart moved up from Minister of Prisons, replacing Penny Mordaunt who took the post of Defence Secretary following Gavin Williamson's dismissal over a security breach from the National Security Council.

An accomplished diplomat, former tutor to Princes William and Harry and award winning writer, Stewart became a member of Parliament in 2010.

He held several posts including Minister of State for International Development and Africa as well as the Prisons portfolio.

A Brexit remainer, he has supported Theresa May's deal and warned of risks of sleepwalking into a no-deal situation through political miscalculation.

A backer of climate change action, he has stated he wants to bring the deeply divided country together on Brexit.

Michael Gove, currently the Environment Secretary who has held several cabinet posts including Education Secretary and Justice Secretary has not declared his intention to run but is seen as a potential contender.

Gove worked first in journalism, including a stint at the Times newspaper, and built a reputation with extensive television and radio appearances.

He entered parliament in 2005 and was made Education Secretary after the Conservatives' election victory in 2010.

His reform plan made many enemies, however, and he was reassigned after four years.

A supporter of the Leave campaign, Gove had previously put himself forward for the leadership of the Tory party following David Cameron's resignation in the wake of the Brexit referendum.

After being the top job campaign manager for fellow Tory Boris Johnson, Gove withdrew his support for him on the day he was announce he was a candidate and instead came forward as a candidate himself.

Johnson decided not to run and Gove lost to Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom, who came second.

He got the Environment Secretary post following the 2017 general election and was a supporter of May's withdrawal deal.  

Jeremy Hunt held the post of Health Secretary for over five years  - the longest serving Health Secretart in the history of the NHS and was under much criticism over his handling of several issues during his tenure, including a feud with junior doctors over their contracts which resulted in several strikes.

Hunt was previously a Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport as well as Minister for the Olympics during the 2012 London Olympics.  

He replaced Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary in July 2018.

A supporter of Remain in the European Union membership referendum, he backed Theresa May's withdrawal deal and is seen a safe pair of hands.

The pro-Brexit Conservative MP Andrea Leadsom, who resigned as House of Commons Leader on Wednesday to protest May's Brexit plan, tweeted on Friday that May's speech was "an illustration of her total commitment to country and duty."

Leadsom, also a possible leadership contender, said May "did her utmost" and praised the dignity of the prime minister's speech.

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, may be keeping plans about their impending baby under wraps, but that hasn't stopped everyone in Britain from trying to guess the gender and the name of their first child.

If Britain's bookmakers are to be believed, it's definitely a girl - and Diana may well be one of her many names.

The William Hill agency closed the betting on the baby's gender a few days ago after an "avalanche" of bets poured in from people convinced the royal couple is having a girl.

"The secret's out, as far as we're concerned," firm spokesman Rupert Adams said. "It could be because someone somewhere has seen the scan, or someone has heard something."

While Adams acknowledged there's always a chance the surge was based on nothing, he said average betting patterns over the years suggest there's usually some truth in rumors.

So far, Diana is topping the bookmakers' list as a front-running name - William Hill has put the odds at 4/1. Victoria, Alice, Grace and Elizabeth are close behind, while Albert, Arthur and James are popular guesses for a boy.

"A ridiculous number - 80% of bets taken - are for the name Diana," Adams said. He said he personally doubts Harry would choose a name that so directly evokes his iconic mother's tragic death in 1997 but added: "There's every chance of it being a middle name."

Carolyn Harris, a royal historian who teaches at the University of Toronto's School of Continuing Studies, agrees that Diana could be a middle name. That's what Harry's brother, Prince William, and his wife Kate did for their daughter, Princess Charlotte (the 3-year-old's full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana).

"The choice of Diana as a first name would place a lot of pressure on the royal baby, as the press would constantly compare her to her famous grandmother," she said.

Harris believes Harry and Meghan may adopt a similar approach to the naming of other recently born royal children lower down the line of succession: Choosing a moniker that's traditional, but one that doesn't frequently appear within the royal family.

She also thinks a possible middle name could be Ruth - after one of Meghan's great-grandmothers, as well as Diana's maternal grandmother, Lady Ruth Fermoy.

Some observers speculate that Meghan, who has long spoken out about women's rights, could go for a name that evokes strong women in history - a theory Harris thinks has substance.

"A name associated with prominent female historical figures in Britain and/or the United States is certainly a possibility," she said. Eleanor, for one, could honor both Eleanor Roosevelt and Eleanor of Aquitaine, queen of England in the 12th century.

Harry and Meghan haven't announced the baby's gender or the due date, which is widely believed to be sometime in late April.

The pair declared Thursday they are keeping the birth private and won't be sharing news about the baby's arrival until they've told family and friends. That has led many to jump to the conclusion that they are planning a home birth at their new residence, Frogmore Cottage, close to Windsor Castle outside of London.

Home birth or not, the scenario will be quite different from the media circus that lasted for days outside the London hospital where their sister-in-law Kate's three children were born. That will significantly dampen the name and gender betting frenzy, according to William Hill, which reported taking "hundreds of bets a minute" every time palace officials announced that Kate had gone into labor.

Whatever name they choose, the new baby will not automatically have the official title of prince or princess. Those titles were given to all three children of William, the eldest son of Prince Charles, heir to the British throne.

Instead, Harry and Meghan's baby is expected to be styled the Earl of Dumbarton if a boy and Lady Mountbatten-Windsor if a girl. That said, the child's great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, could change that if she wants the baby to be a prince or princess.

Harry's first child will be seventh in line for the throne, bumping down Harry's uncle, Prince Andrew.

Some punters have been having a laugh with their royal baby bets. Ladbrokes reported that 2 pounds ($2.60) have been staked on the name Brexit - with odds of 500/1. The name Donald is at 250/1. Meghan, as any reader of British tabloids knows, is no fan of the current U.S. president.

One thing British betting agencies are not seeing: lots of money being placed on quirky, New Age or celebrity-driven, unique monikers.

"Harry is a traditional guy at heart, we think he would like a relatively traditional but not absolutely turgid royal name," Adams said.

"(Meghan) would like to convey herself as regal - we feel she would not go with a weird name like 'Sunshine,'" he added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May criticised her former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson for a newspaper column in which he described burqa-wearing women as "letter boxes" and "bank robbers".

Johnson, who quit the government last month in a dispute over Brexit, made the remarks in a Daily Telegraph article published on Monday.

"It is imperative that everybody is careful in the language that they use. It's very clear that the language Boris Johnon used to describe people's appearance, has caused offence. It's not language I would've used, I think it was wrong to have used that language," she said.

In his article, Johnson said he opposed banning burqas and other face-covering garments, but wrote that it was "absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes."

His article drew criticism from Muslim groups and fellow politicians - including some Conservatives.

The Conservative Party's chairman, Brandon Lewis, has asked for Johnson to publicly apologise for the comments he made.

Latin-spouting, tousle-headed Johnson is a former mayor of London and one of Britain's best-known politicians.

He resigned as foreign secretary in July, accusing Prime Minister Theresa May of killing "the Brexit dream" with her plan to seek close economic ties with the European Union after the UK leaves the bloc next year.

The resignation solidified Johnson's position as a leader of the pro-Brexit wing of the Conservative Party, which is deeply divided over its attitude to the EU.

Many expect May to face a leadership challenge if faltering Brexit negotiations don't improve - and Johnson is likely to be a contender to replace her.

Some suspected Johnson's burqa comments were intended to boost his appeal among right-wing members of the party.

Sayeeda Warsi, a Conservative member of the House of Lords, said Johnson was using Muslim women as a "convenient political football to try and increase his poll ratings."

"These were offensive comments but clever politics," she said. "Boris knew the effect and the impact that this kind of dog-whistle politics would have."

Several European countries, including France, Belgium and Denmark, have banned face-covering veils in public, but none of Britain's main political parties supports such a restriction.

Her comments came just hours before the Republican-controlled Senate was expected to rebuke the Republican president for declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Democratic-run House, led by Pelosi, voted last month to block the declaration.

Trump thanked the Irish leader for briefing him on his perspective on Britain leaving the European Union.

The Irish Prime Minister paid tribute to the Congress for its support, "at this critical time to help us to protect and ensure that there is no return to a hard border on the island of Ireland, whatever else may happen as a consequence of Brexit."

British lawmakers were deciding Thursday whether to seek a delay to Brexit, which is currently scheduled for March 29.

UK's Prime Minister Theresa May told a business forum that Japan was one of the key trading opportunities for trade after Brexit.

Speaking in Tokyo on Thursday, the Prime Minister said that this is a formative period in shaping the future of the United Kingdom as it leaves the European Union.

"I am determined that we will seize the opportunity to become an ever more outward-looking global Britain, deepening our trade relations with old friends and new allies around the world," May said.

"And there are few places where the opportunities of doing so are greater than Japan, the third largest economy in the world," she said.

The British leader is on the second day of a three-day visit to Japan that is expected to focus on Brexit, trade and security.

President Emmanuel Macron pledged Saturday to protect European farming standards and culinary traditions threatened by aggressive foreign trade practices that see food as a "product like any other."

Macron's speech at his country's premier agriculture fair was aimed at assuaging French farmers' anger at government policies seen as favouring urban elites and neglecting the heartland cherished for producing famed cheeses and wines.

Europe's "civilisation of eating well, of gastronomy, of the art of living" is now threatened by world powers that pursue aggressive trade policies and "consider food a product like any other," without taking into account environmental, health or culinary concerns, Macron said.

He spoke amid European Union talks on its next agricultural aid plan, a major source of funding for French farmers.

He appealed for unity at those talks and argued against calls to re-nationalise French farming policy.

Macron is trying to tackle the concerns head-on by spending all day Saturday at the Salon d'Agriculture in Paris, where farmers showcase their livestock, food and wines.

A day before crucial talks between British Prime Minister Theresa May and senior EU officials on Brexit negotiations, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson hosted EU counterparts at his official residence in Kent, taking one out in a rowing boat.

During a walk around the Chevening House estate with a group of Eastern European foreign ministers and his wife, Johnson persuaded one guest to head out onto the lake in a small boat.

Despite protestations from his wife, Marina Wheeler, who joked that they were "not drowning the foreign ministers," the Czech Republic's Deputy Foreign Minister Ivo Sramek, jumped into the rowing boat and took it out before coming back to pick up Johnson.

"This is going to be a tremendous success," Johnson said as he rowed off for a short paddle on the water with his guest.

JEREMY CORBYN ADDRESSES GLASTONBURY CROWDS

British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn was on Saturday (JUNE 24) greeted by crowds of revellers chanting his name at the ever-popular Glastonbury Festival.

The Labour Party leader met festival staff as well as dairy farmer and founder of the festival Michael Eavis as he arrived at the site in Pilton, Somerset.

The audience booed Donald Trump when the British politician mentioned the US President's name during his speech.

"And if you can see that far, look on the wall right over there that surrounds this wonderful festival. There's a message on that wall for President Donald Trump. And you know what it says? Build bridges not walls," Corbyn said, to cheers.
