UK Foreign Secretary and Conservative leadership contender Jeremy Hunt said Monday that he would decide whether a Brexit deal can get through the House of Commons by September 30th if he became prime minister.

At a speech in London outlining his 10 point plan for Brexit, Hunt said that he would ramp up no-deal preparations "on day one" if he was elected, pledging a 6 billion pound (7.6 billion US dollar) fund to support the fishing and farming sectors who export to Europe.

Hunt added that if he assessed there was no deal to be done he would "immediately cease all discussions with the European Union and focus the whole country's mission on no deal preparations."

He assured EU citizens that their rights would be protected whatever the outcome.

Hunt clarified that no deal was "not my preferred destination, but if a withdrawal deal is simply not on the cards, then the only way to fulfill the democratic mandate of the referendum is to leave without a deal, which is what we will do."

The discussion over a no-deal Brexit is at the forefront of the battle for the leadership of the Conservative Party between Hunt and Boris Johnson.

The winner will become prime minister next month.

Johnson, a former mayor of London, has said Britain will leave on October 31 "do or die" while Hunt says it's an artificial deadline that could be extended again.

Brexit has already been delayed from its original date of March 29 after Parliament rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal three times.

Both leadership candidates have said they will look to negotiate changes to the withdrawal agreement that deals with citizens' rights post-Brexit, Britain's financial obligations to the EU and making sure no hard border returns between EU member Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

Nominations close on Monday in the Brexit-dominated race to become Britain's next prime minister, a contest that will be decided by lawmakers and members of the governing Conservative Party.

With a 1600 GMT deadline to submit nomination papers, almost a dozen contenders were already battling it out over tax policy, past drug use - and, of course, Britain's stalled departure from the European Union.

The winner will face the challenge of breaking Britain's impasse over Brexit, an issue that has bedevilled politicians for three years and ultimately defeated outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May.

The favourite on betting markets is Boris Johnson, a former foreign secretary with an instantly recognizable mop of blond hair and a knack for entertaining the public.

He says he will take Britain out of the bloc without a deal if necessary, and on Monday promised a tax cut for millions of middle- and high-income Britons.

Unlike the other candidates, Johnson hasn't given television interviews or held any public events, as his campaign team tries to avoid gaffes that could spoil his front-runner status.

For all candidates, the key issue is Brexit.

The Conservatives have been hammered in recent European and local elections as voters punish the party for failing to leave the 28-nation EU.

"The leadership I offer is based on one simple truth; without Brexit there will be no Conservative government and maybe no Conservative Party," Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said as he officially launched his campaign on Monday.

Hunt backed the losing "remain" side during the 2016 EU membership referendum, but now says he will negotiate a better Brexit deal with the EU and lead the UK out of the bloc.

Former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab is competing with Johnson for the support of hardcore Brexiteers.

He said on Monday that Britain had "suffered a loss of nerve" and must not delay its departure from the EU  beyond October 31.

He has even suggested he could suspend Parliament if it tried to delay or impede Brexit.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock pitches himself as the face of a younger, modernising generation in the Conservative Party.

Promising to deliver an energising blend of social liberalism and economic dynamism, he said on Monday that the Conservatives had to look beyond Brexit - a message that may be coming too soon for many in the party.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was meeting with her cabinet Tuesday, a day after Brexit talks between her government and the main opposition Labour Party resumed with little sign of progress.

Senior Conservative and Labour officials have been meeting for weeks in an attempt to find a compromise Brexit deal that can win majority support in Parliament.

Labour Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer told Monday's Guardian newspaper his party would only support a deal if was put to a referendum vote.

May has rejected a new referendum, saying voters made their decision in 2016 when they narrowly opted to leave the EU.

If the cross-party talks fail, the government says it will give Parliament votes on a series of Brexit options in an attempt to see if any has majority support.

The UK's departure from the EU, long set for March 29, has been delayed until Oct. 31 while Britain's politicians try to break the deadlock.

UK's Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the country now "has a chance to leave the European Union on 29th of March," after Prime Minister announced on Monday evening what she described as "legally binding" changes in her European Union divorce deal.

"If we grab this opportunity now we can do that and if we don't, we increase the risk of both a customs union outcome and possibly no Brexit," Hunt said on Tuesday heading for the Cabinet meeting.

The House of Commons will vote later in the day after last-minute talks with the EU produced assurances the deal couldn't be used to tie Britain to the bloc indefinitely.

May is still facing continued opposition from some lawmakers to her deal for the withdrawal from the bloc despite "legally binding" changes that she hopes will win parliamentary support for the agreement.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox raised this concern when the agreement was presented to Parliament in December, and many lawmakers are now waiting for his legal opinion on the new provisions.

May flew to Strasbourg, France, late Monday for talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

At a news conference, they announced changes designed to overcome lawmakers' concerns about provisions designed to ensure the border between EU member Ireland and Britain's Northern Ireland remains open after Brexit.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says a general election would be "political suicide" for the Conservatives.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Hunt said that trying to leave the European Union without a deal would lead Parliament to trigger a national election that would be "absolutely catastrophic" for the Conservatives.

He said the party would get "annihilated" as it failed to deliver Brexit.

The race to succeed Prime Minister Theresa May is becoming a battle over whether Britain should leave the bloc without a divorce agreement - or whether that would cause economic and political mayhem.

Hunt said he believes a deal can be negotiated by looking for "solutions that change the backstop."

"In its current form it's not acceptable to the UK Parliament, but offer alternative ways of giving reassurance on the Irish border, I think in the end there is a deal to be done," Hunt said.

May's Conservatives are reeling after the upstart Brexit Party won Britain's election for European Parliament seats.

The Conservatives came a humiliating fifth.

That led some Conservatives, including leadership contenders Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab, to argue that the UK must leave the EU as scheduled on October 31, even if it hasn't approved a withdrawal deal.

Others say crashing out of the bloc would be reckless.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt suggested on Monday that the UK should increase its contribution to NATO, taking some of the financial burden off Washington.

"It's simply not sustainable to expect one NATO ally to spend nearly 4% of GDP on defence while the others spend between 1 and 2%." Hunt said at the Lord Mayor of the City of London's Easter Banquet.

"I believe it's time for the next Strategic Defence and Security Review to ask whether over the coming decade we should decisively increase the proportion of GDP we devote to defence," Hunt added.

The British foreign secretary was speaking a few hours after meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo,

On Brexit, Hunt said the process of leaving the EU had to be achieved "cleanly and properly."

British Prime Minister Theresa May was holding a cabinet meeting Tuesday, a day after the House of Commons voted to take control of the parliamentary timetable, allowing lawmakers to vote on alternatives to the Brexit deal May negotiated with the EU.

May's government said Parliament's decision to take control of the stalled process of leaving the European Union underscores the need for lawmakers to approve her twice-defeated deal.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC on Tuesday that the government won't "pre-commit" to accepting the option backed by lawmakers.

Hancock said lawmakers should support the prime minister's agreement because "the best way through this impasse is the one deal that's been negotiated with the EU."

British Prime Minister Theresa May was on Monday meeting with her Cabinet to map out a strategy for delivering Brexit as she fights to stay in power.

The session comes after a weekend of speculation that she may be forced to resign to win approval for her twice-rejected Brexit deal.

Lawmakers are preparing to debate proposals for a series of votes on alternatives to May's deal, which could take control of the process away from the government.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday claimed May had "chickened out" on delivering Brexit this week.

Writing in the Telegraph, he said that to win support for her deal she must show that the next phase of negotiations - on future relations with the European Union - will be different.

UK Conservative leadership candidates Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt faced their final hustings on Wednesday.

Both candidates delivered speeches and answered questions in front of hundreds of Conservatives at a London conference centre.

In an eye-catching move Johnson brandished a kipper on stage, and said the plastic wrapping it was covered in was an example of European Union (EU) rules increasing business costs in the UK.

In an energetic address he pledged to "get Brexit done by October 31."

Pollsters favourite Johnson refused to answer questions on whether he would be willing to suspend parliament in order to push through a no deal Brexit to make the deadline.

His opponent Jeremy Hunt attempted to position himself as the best person to revitalise talks with the EU.

Both candidates said the backdrop, which was included in the withdrawal agreement negotiated by Prime Minister May and aims to prevent a hard border in Northern Ireland, was unworkable.

The EU has repeatedly said the agreement is not up for renegotiation.

Hunt also doubled on his criticism of Donald Trump after the U.S. President's said four Democratic congresswomen should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

" I've got three half Chinese children born on the NHS with British passports," Hunt said.

"It would be totally unacceptable to me or my wife if anyone ever told them to go back to China, and I hope no politician in this country ever would," he said.

May announced her resignation last month after her Brexit deal was rejected by parliament three times.

About 160,000 Conservative members have until Monday to vote by postal ballot.

The winner will be announced Tuesday and will replace May as party leader and prime minister.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May faced renewed pressure on Tuesday from her restive Conservative Party to resign as MPs returned to parliament and to Brexit wrangling after an 11-day Easter break.

The UK's European Union exit, long scheduled to take place last month, has been delayed as the government tries to win parliament's backing for a divorce deal. The bloc has given Britain until 31 October to ratify an agreement or leave the 28-nation EU without a deal to smooth the way.

Most economists believe that a 'no-deal' Brexit would plunge Britain into recession as customs checks would likely be installed at UK ports, and tariffs imposed on trade between the UK and the EU.

Talks on striking a compromise Brexit agreement are set to resume between May's government and the main opposition Labour Party.

But several days of talks earlier this month failed to produce a breakthrough, and there are few signs the gap between the two sides is closing.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Thursday that the government was committed to avoiding a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as a consequence of Brexit.

Speaking in London, Hunt said the government needed to demonstrate that it understood the "concerns of people in Ireland"

and "we should never see a return to a hard border".

The Foreign Secretary also commented on the crisis in Venezuela and the embattled government of President Nicolas Maduro.

Hunt said Britain was not considering sanctions against the country as the humanitarian situation has made it too vulnerable.

Conservative leadership candidate Boris Johnson expressed regret at the resignation of the British ambassador to the United States saying he was a "superb diplomat".

The resignation of Sir Kim Darroch came after US President Donald Trump lashed out at him on Twitter, describing the ambassador as "wacky" and a "pompous fool."

The criticism came after leaked documents revealed the envoy's dim view of Trump's administration, which he described as dysfunctional, inept and chaotic.

Though the matter had been brewing for days, Darroch made his decision the morning after a debate between the two contenders to replace May as party leader and prime minister, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt.

Hunt, who is Britain's foreign secretary, had vowed to keep Darroch in the post, but Johnson pointedly did not.

"I think it's very important we should have a close partnership, a close friendship with the United States," Johnson said at the debate.

On Wednesday, after learning of Darroch's resignation and being confronted with his comments a day before that he would not back him, Johnson said "no, on the contrary, my view is that it is wrong to drag civil servants into the political arena."

Darroch's forthright, unfiltered views on the U.S. administration - meant for a limited audience and discreet review - appeared in leaked diplomatic documents that were published in Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper.

In the leaked documents, he called the Trump administration's policy toward Iran "incoherent," said the president might be indebted to "dodgy Russians" and raised doubts about whether the White House "will ever look competent."

Meanwhile, asked about a threat by a former prime minister to take Johnson to court if he tries to suspend Parliament to deliver a UK departure from the European Union without a deal, Johnson said that "consecrating the decision to the judiciary is really very, very odd indeed."

John Major told the BBC it would be unacceptable and against tradition to shut down Parliament, and he would seek a court ruling to overturn it if it happened.

Major's suggestion is important because Parliament has repeatedly signalled its opposition to a no-deal Brexit, but has no obvious way of stopping it.

A legal challenge offers a potential new route.

Johnson, who has said leaving the EU by the scheduled date of Oct. 31 is a "do or die" matter, refused to rule out bypassing Parliament to prevent lawmakers from blocking a no-deal departure.

"They asked the British people whether they wanted to leave in 2016, the British people returned a very clear verdict so let's get it done," Johnson said Wednesday.

Britain's governing Conservatives are set to pick two candidates who will square off to become the country's next prime minister.

Lawmakers will vote on Thursday to eliminate two contenders from a four-strong field of ex-Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, current Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

Johnson has a commanding lead after three rounds of voting that cut the list from an initial 10 contenders. The three others are battling to join him in a runoff to be decided by 160,000 Conservative Party members nationwide.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday said the West's response to the nerve-agent poisoning of a former spy has seriously hurt Russia's intelligence capability.

She spoke during a foreign-policy speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet event in London.

Britain accuses Russia of poisoning ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter with a Soviet-made nerve agent in the English city of Salisbury in March - a claim Moscow denies.

After the attack Britain and other countries expelled a total of 150 Russian spies working under diplomatic cover.

Russia expelled a similar number of those countries' envoys.

May said it was "the largest-ever collective expulsion of Russian intelligence officers, fundamentally degrading Russian intelligence capability for years to come".

On Brexit, May said the UK and the EU "are working extremely hard, through the night, to make progress on the remaining issues in the Withdrawal Agreement, which are significant".

May also reiterated calls for a "transparent and credible" investigation into the killing at Istanbul's Saudi consulate of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi.

The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is widely suspected of at least having knowledge of the killing, which involved some members of his security entourage.

Bin Salman has denied having knowledge or involvement.

Khashoggi was a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince who was living in self-imposed exile before his death.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Thursday that British Prime Minister Theresa May will still be in her post when US President Donald Trump comes to Britain for a June 3-5 state visit.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was holding a weekly Cabinet meeting at Downing Street on Tuesday, set to discuss preparations for a "no-deal" Brexit.

The discussions Tuesday were expected to centre on how two billion pounds (2.5 billion US dollars) in government funding to absorb the potential economic chaos is to be allocated.

With Britain's departure from the bloc just over 100 days  away, it remains unclear whether the country will leave with a deal or crash out with no deal - an outcome that risks touching off gridlock at ports and shortages of goods.

British prime minister Theresa May presided over a meeting of her cabinet on Tuesday following her resignation as Conservative party leader last week.

The meeting came as the campaign to replace her as leader - and as prime minister - intensified.

Ten present and former ministers are competing for the post.

A number of contenders shrugged off questions from reporters as they arrived in Downing St for the meeting, and were similarly tight-lipped after they left.

The front runner is former foreign secretary Boris Johnson.

Other leading contenders include the current foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt, former Brexit secretary Michael Gove, home secretary Sajid Javid, health secretary Matt Hancock, and former Commons leader Andrea Leadsom.

In votes starting Thursday, Conservative lawmakers will narrow the field down to two.

Those two will then be put to a vote of Conservative party members nationwide.
