"I think when you look what's happened with the English clubs so even the middle-ranking clubs like Crystal Palace can get (Yohan) Cabaye, he's a proper Champions League player. That wouldn't have happened a few years ago. I think Bournemouth are wealthier than Ajax so they've got that financial muscle but I think it will be an issue. When you see the quality of coaches coming through to the Premier League, players will want to sign for (Pep) Guardiola, will want to sign for (Jose) Mourinho, so there will be that extra hook. Look at Everton now with (Ronald) Koeman there, you know players might not have wanted to have gone there from overseas to play for (Roberto) Martinez but with someone like Koeman in there, I think they'll go. Obviously they'll follow the money trail first but also I think they'll be persuaded by the quality of coach they are signing for. I don't think it's going to be a complete disaster that some people are predicting for English football."

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

English football journalist Henry Winter gave his assessment on the impact 'Brexit' will have on the Premier League.

Winter suggested that English clubs may now be forced to pay around 10-15 per cent more in transfer fees in relation to other top European leagues due to the decision to leave the European Union in the nationwide referendum on Thursday.

Players from European Union countries may also face new work permit issues once the UK exits the free trade bloc.

But Winter, Chief Football Writer for The Times newspaper, believes that the Premier League may try to introduce a football specific work permit in order to grant players permission to ply their trade in England.

STORYLINE:

With the United Kingdom on the verge of leaving the European Union, a football finance expert and the developer of the Football Manager game talked to SNTV on Thursday about the likely implications for the English Premier League.

Britain will officially leave the EU at 11pm GMT on Friday 31st January, the exact same time and date as the closure of the January transfer window.

Sports Interactive, the developers of the popular 'Football Manager' game, have included various post-Brexit scenarios into the game in the wake of the UK's 2016 EU referendum to assess outcomes of a political decision on the national sport.

Meanwhile, the English Football Association hopes more home-grown players will get game time in the Premier League after Brexit, but the Premier League wants to protect its status as the world's richest soccer competition with teams able to sign talent freely from across Europe.

"I think a lot depends on which team you support. If you support one of the top clubs, actually you'll probably benefit from the introduction of Brexit. If you support a lower league club or a club in the lower reaches of the (English) Premier League, there will be a downside. And there's another issue if you're a fan of a club that is playing in Europe. Where does this leave you in terms of being able to travel within the European Union? I think it would be unlikely that we'll need visas. A lot will depend upon how negotiations develop between both parties in terms of the UK (United Kingdom) government and the EU (European Union).

If we leave the EU and freedom of movement no longer applies, then unless there are specific rules introduced for the football industry, we would switch to the non-

If you are the likes of Manchester United signing Bruno (Fernandes) for 57-58 million pounds, it's not going to affect them because he's an established international, he's clearly on a very significant wage to begin with, he's going to be on the high salary at Manchester United. So for the elite clubs, I think they'll be relatively unaffected. If you take a look at smaller clubs, the likes of Crystal Palace or Bournemouth or Watford, and when they try to recruit from the EU at present, many of those players don't have international caps and they might not be coming from a team which is in the existing UEFA competitions. Their salaries will be significantly lower and it will be that much more difficult for those smaller clubs to recruit."

So the likes of Cesc Fabregas coming to Arsenal at the age of 16 would no longer be valid. I mean, it's yet to be proven either way in law. So I think this is one thing which will run and run."

"We've done simulations in house as well as seeing the data from people playing the game. What they show is if we do stick to the current work permit system but make it global rather than for non-EU (players) over time  - and it does take time, it wouldn't be an instant thing, you're looking at five to 10 years - the interest in the Premier League does drop, which means the revenue coming in drops.  And it's not just the revenue in football. So this is something that we don't necessarily simulate in game. But if there's less interest, that would actually hit the tourism industry as well, because there are billions of pounds each year that come into the UK from people coming to see Premier League football."

"I think there will be opportunities for home-grown players, and I think a very good example of this, purely by accident, is what's happened at Chelsea. They were given a transfer ban in the summer '19 window and this meant that they couldn't recruit. And as a consequence of that, they gave the opportunity to the likes of Mason Mount. (Fikayo) Tomori and Tammy Abraham and so on. And those players have managed to establish themselves in the first team squad and have been regularly appearing in the team. Therefore, it could be an unexpected benefit of Brexit, which will force other clubs to take a similar view and perhaps to invest even more money. And it has to be said, Premier League clubs do invest huge sums in their academies. But to invest even more money in the academy if they see it as being a far more important pipeline towards future talent."

STORY

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will step down as Conservative Party leader on June 7, sparking a contest to replace her as party chief and U.K. leader.

Contenders to the leadership role are starting to emerge inside the Conservative party.

Three of those who have officially thrown their hat into the ring are former London Mayor and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, former Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey and newly appointed International Development Secretary Rory Stewart.

Known for his gaffes and less than diplomatic stances on several issues, the Eton and Oxford educated Johnson was one of the faces of the Leave campaign and remains a polarising character.

He had been going for the Prime Minister position after David Cameron's resignation but stopped short of announcing his candidacy when his campaign manager Michael Gove decided to pull his backing at the last minute.

He was named Foreign Secretary in July 2016 and quit the post in July 2018 over Theresa May's approach to the Brexit process.

Returning to Parliament as a back bencher, he continued to campaign for an alternative to May's Brexit plans.

Esther McVey was a member of Parliament from 2010, serving later as Cameron's Under-Secretary of State for Disabilities in 2012 before taking up the post of Minister of State for Employment the following year.

She later moved on to become the Chair of the British Transport Police Authority and  Deputy Chief Government Whip, becoming Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in January 2018.

A staunch Brexit backer, she quit the post in November over Theresa May's handling of the process.

On Monday McVey launched the Blue Collar Conservatism group to woe working class voters, pledging to make cuts to the overseas aid budget to fund domestic budgets such as education and police instead.

McVey wants to see Britain leave the EU by the end of October even if that means leaving without a deal.

Newly appointed International Development Secretary Rory Stewart moved up from Minister of Prisons, replacing Penny Mordaunt who took the post of Defence Secretary following Gavin Williamson's dismissal over a security breach from the National Security Council.

An accomplished diplomat, former tutor to Princes William and Harry and award winning writer, Stewart became a member of Parliament in 2010.

He held several posts including Minister of State for International Development and Africa as well as the Prisons portfolio.

A Brexit remainer, he has supported Theresa May's deal and warned of risks of sleepwalking into a no-deal situation through political miscalculation.

A backer of climate change action, he has stated he wants to bring the deeply divided country together on Brexit.

Michael Gove, currently the Environment Secretary who has held several cabinet posts including Education Secretary and Justice Secretary has not declared his intention to run but is seen as a potential contender.

Gove worked first in journalism, including a stint at the Times newspaper, and built a reputation with extensive television and radio appearances.

He entered parliament in 2005 and was made Education Secretary after the Conservatives' election victory in 2010.

His reform plan made many enemies, however, and he was reassigned after four years.

A supporter of the Leave campaign, Gove had previously put himself forward for the leadership of the Tory party following David Cameron's resignation in the wake of the Brexit referendum.

After being the top job campaign manager for fellow Tory Boris Johnson, Gove withdrew his support for him on the day he was announce he was a candidate and instead came forward as a candidate himself.

Johnson decided not to run and Gove lost to Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom, who came second.

He got the Environment Secretary post following the 2017 general election and was a supporter of May's withdrawal deal.  

Jeremy Hunt held the post of Health Secretary for over five years  - the longest serving Health Secretart in the history of the NHS and was under much criticism over his handling of several issues during his tenure, including a feud with junior doctors over their contracts which resulted in several strikes.

Hunt was previously a Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport as well as Minister for the Olympics during the 2012 London Olympics.  

He replaced Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary in July 2018.

A supporter of Remain in the European Union membership referendum, he backed Theresa May's withdrawal deal and is seen a safe pair of hands.

The pro-Brexit Conservative MP Andrea Leadsom, who resigned as House of Commons Leader on Wednesday to protest May's Brexit plan, tweeted on Friday that May's speech was "an illustration of her total commitment to country and duty."

Leadsom, also a possible leadership contender, said May "did her utmost" and praised the dignity of the prime minister's speech.

MICHAEL MOORE SAYS TRUMP SUPPORTS A '21ST CENTURY VERSION OF FASCISM'

American filmmaker Michael Moore spoke out against Donald trump at a press conference in London on Thursday (9 JUNE 2016), ahead of the U.K. release of Moore's latest film, "Where to Invade next."

Known for his political documentaries such as "Bowling for Columbine," and "Fahrenheit 9/11," Moore strongly criticized the presumptive Republican nominee and discussed the possibility of Trump becoming president.

"He knows how to manipulate a dumbed-down population whose schools have been wrecked, whose media is just insipid and stupid and doesn't give people the facts about what's going on," said Moore.

"The public is easily manipulated by somebody like him. Those who vote for him, he had record turn outs, he has the largest rallies, he supports a 21st century version of fascism of marrying the state and capital together to benefit the few at the expense of the many and, in the process, blame the other. The other is causing your problems, let's build a wall. Let's ban Muslims. I don't believe the majority of Americans agree with him, but it's going to be who shows up to vote, that's your problem too. "

"He's not as stupid as he looks," continued Moore. "You should take it very seriously. He knows the manipulation that's going on here and the use of propaganda and the way he's doing it is just brilliant in the sense that he is succeeding and has succeeded. 17 other candidates couldn't find a way to bring him down, 17 others. And now Hillary Clinton is trying to do the same thing using logic, brains - things like that. It's going to require something else."

The 62-year-old Michigan-born director also looked back on Barack Obama's time as president.

"We have our criticisms of Barack Obama. He has deported more immigrants than any previous president, he's arrested more whistleblowers than any previous president. He's turned his back on Flint, my home town, with the water crisis there. So, many criticisms but everything they said, it's all true and history will look back and record that there was a racist party, and this racist party did everything they could to stop him simply because he was black, they had no other reason. That a large percentage of that party didn't even believe that he was born in the United States. 19 percent of Republicans, according to one poll, believe he is the Antichrist, in other words he is the Devil himself. But those are the dying voices."

After stating that Republicans thought of Obama as "President Blackula," Moore was interrupted by a journalist who said, "That's not funny at all."

"Well it's satire," responded the documentarian. "That's how the Republicans think. This is a racist party and he won two times and now hopefully we'll have our first female president and hopefully she will not be to the right of him."

"Where to Invade Next" is Moore's first film in six years. It's shot in the style of a travelogue and follows Moore as he spends time in various countries on three continents. During his journey he experiences how those countries deal with social and economic problems compared with the U.S..

"I've spent 25 years pointing out everything that's wrong with the United States and I not only not have to point it out any longer to my fellow Americans, most Americans or the majority at least get it," said Moore. "Most Americans by now know that the rich have gotten a lot richer, everybody else is working harder and longer for less pay, less benefits, not much time off. And so, to make another film, and I said this at the end of 'Capitalism: A Love Story' – my end of my last film, there's really – I've said pretty much what I want to say here. I'm not going to keep making these issue films because the issues are what's wrong has, at its core, an economic system that's unjust and unfair and it's not democratic."

The director also weighed in on the current Brexit debate raging in the U.K., questioning why Britain would want to leave the European Union.

"We thought that Europeans would also love this movie because it's a reminder to you of the good things that you have. And to take a look to yourselves through the outsider's eyes – yes, I know the problems, yes there's a lot of – in all the countries including yours. But still, you came up with the idea of a National Health Service. No other country has this and yeah, OK, so there's some problems. Fix 'em. Quit whining. Fix 'em."

Qatar's finance minister has announced an additional 5 billion pounds (6.3 billion US dollars) in investment in the UK.

Ali Shareef Al Emadi is in London attending a forum to promote business between the two countries.

STORYLINE:

The conference room at the Grosvenor House Hotel is packed for the Qatar-UK Business and Investment Forum.

More than 400 British and Qatari business leaders and senior politicians are attending the event.

The Qatari delegation is led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar.

It's a sign of just how important business is between these two nations - bilateral trade is valued at 5 billion pounds (6.3 billion US dollars) a year.

Qatar already has 35 billion pounds (44 billion US dollars) of existing investment in the UK.

And the country's finance minister has announced that will increase by an extra 5 billion (6.3 billion US dollars) over the next three to five years.

"We're looking at the UK as one of our top 10 trading partners," says Ali Shareef Al Emadi.

"I think the track record for both countries is extremely positive and well received. If you look at what we've done 10, 15 years in the UK it's been an absolutely great story for us."

And British companies have huge investments in Qatar too.

In 2015, UK exports to the Gulf country totalled 2.6 billion pounds (3.3 billion US dollars).

El Amadi says British companies have done "extremely well" in Qatar's hydrocarbon sector, but believes there are also opportunities in infrastructure, technology, health and sport sectors.

UK trade is likely to undergo massive change as it negotiates its exit from the European Union.

Exports of goods and services currently account for about 27 percent of the British economy, with almost half of exports going to the EU.

While some warn Brexit could harm British business, Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox believes it's a chance to look "beyond the boundaries" of Europe.

"This of course means forging new ties and building new relationships with other nations. But perhaps more importantly, to strengthening our commitment to our oldest friends and allies. Qatar is one of the most valued of these," he tells the forum.

Big brands like Qatar Airways are represented at the forum.

And Qatar is heavily invested in British companies too - high end retailer Harrods, Barclays Bank and the iconic London skyscraper The Shard have all received backing.

Private company Al Sawari Holdings has long had a presence in the UK. It has business in a range of industries including real estate, hospitality, construction and manufacturing.

Its chairman Sheikh Turki Bin Faisal Al Thani explains why Britain is such an attractive place to invest.

"It's a very stable market, it's resistant to change. At the same time, it's a diversified market and for us it's also an international hub," he says.

"Our presence here exposes us to more international companies, allows us to develop a stronger network, to even get opportunities to be a part of business outside the UK, through the UK."

And he's cautiously optimistic about post-Brexit Britain.

"Every country has a period of up and down. But we've been with the UK for many years now and I don't think this will change," he says.

"Our investments are always long term so even though we can expect a bit of a dip in the coming years, that's not our vision, our vision is to look in the next 30 years."

LEADIN

Following a year of declining art sales globally, the world's premier art fair has opened its doors to specially invited guests.

Insurers says around 3-billion euros worth of art are for sale at this year's Art Basel including works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

STORYLINE

This is "Homme Assis" by Pablo Picasso.

It was painted by the Spanish artist in 1969, and now it is for sale here at Art Basel, the world's premier art fair.

The price - 11-million dollars.

It might sound like a lot, but it is far from the most expensive painting here.

"Le Soleil Rouge Range L'araignee" by Joan Miro will set you back 20 million dollars.

And "Baby Boom" by Jean-Michel Basquiat, recently crowned as the most expensive American artist, costs 32 million dollars.

The main halls of Art Basel opened for invited guests on Tuesday afternoon (13th June 2017).

In total 291 galleries from 34 countries are showing works from more than 4000 artists.

It is a contemporary art bonanza, one that is firmly established as the most important event of the year for any serious lover of contemporary art.

Art insurer Axa Arts estimate that the total value of the art shown at Art Basel will be around 3-billion euros, about the same as the annual GDP of a small country like the Maldives.

But years of rapid growth the global art market saw a decline in sales in 2016.

Around 56.6 billion dollars worth of art was sold in 2016, a decline of 11 percent compared to 2015, according to a report by Art Basel.

One of the reasons for the drop was a 26 percent decline in sales at auctions. Sales at art fairs on the other hand rose 5 percent compared to 2015 to reach 13.3 billion dollars.

But nonetheless there is optimism at Art Basel.

"Well it is interesting. I think we have reached a new plateau in the art market. And this idea of a correction is a very harsh sounding word. So is the idea of a bubble. So I'm not sure that the bubble has exactly burst, lets just say that it has had a little air let out of it," says Adam Sheffer, Partner at Cheim & Read Gallery.

Art Basel only has contemporary works from the last 100 years. In this sector the value of sales declined by 18 percent in 2016 compared to the year before.

And after years of rapid and booming growth, sales in the high-end market with works costing more than 1 million dollars declined by 34 percent in 2016 compared to the year before, according to the same report by Art Basel.

But this might be more the case of artworks not coming to the market, says Alexander Forbes, Executive Editor of Artsy art news website

"If I have a painting worth a hundred million dollars I might be more reluctant to bring it to market during a time of political and economical uncertainty that we have had over the past couple of years, then I would at a time when things are much more stable. I want to be certain, especially if I'm going out at auction, that the public will have the response that I want," he says.

Things are already looking better in 2017 compared to the year before, says Forbes.

In May a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold for 110.5 million dollars at a Sotheby's auction in New York, making it the most expensive work by an American artist ever sold at an auction.

There seems to be the case that well established artists are increasing in value, says Todd Levin, a New York based art advisor.

"There aren't trends in terms of specific artists or specific movements. What there is is certainly a trend, or a turn back, towards quality, and away from the kind of investment craze that has been happening over the last three or four years in the art market, particularly with younger and newer artists. Some of whom had only had one auction result or one gallery exhibition under their belt, had works already turning up on the secondary market for six and sometimes seven figures. That does not happen anymore."

The crowd at Art Basel is clearly relaxed and some paintings in the segment over one million dollars have already sold.

One is the abstract expressionist painting called "Number 11" by Philip Guston, that sold today for 8.5-million dollars.

The unstable world might not have a negative effect on the global art market, it might actually be the opposite, says Levin.

"Between Brexit, the the instability in the United States at the highest levels what's happening currently with Qatar and the Middle East, and other areas of the world, what I'm seeing with some of my clients is that they are actually moving some of their assets towards art. Because they think that a certain amount of their net worth invested in art will help," he says.

So putting money in to art might still be a good investment for old age, at least if you have a few million dollars to spare.

Art Basel opens to the public on June 15 and runs through June 18 2017.
