Why did Katie Holmes file for divorce from Tom Cruise in New York? And now that they've settled, how long will it take before their officially exes?

Entertainment reporters and legal experts are weighing in on the celebrity couple's split.

Jennifer Peros of Us Weekly says even the specifics of the settlement have been kept private, there are some things we know:

"It doesn't really seem that Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's divorce settlement was too much about money. It was mostly about the custody of Suri. Katie made sure she got sole custody with some visitation rights from Tom, bodyguards and nannies have to be present at all times. So she really wasn't worried about getting the $15 million that she's reportedly getting out of this. She just wanted her daughter."

New York attorney Bettina Hindin, who specializes in matrimonial law says just because the pair have reached an agreement on their breakup doesn't mean their divorced yet.

"They won't be divorced until all the appropriate papers are filed. Then those papers which are about a stack high go from the clerk's office to the judges desk and the judge will sign them so typically in New York our turnaround is 2 to 3 months. If you need it quicker you can petition the court to have it done quicker for example if someone is nine months pregnant and wants to get married or someone is on their death bed but typically it takes a few months before the judge puts his signature on the judgement for divorce and then it has to be stamped, entered by the county clerk and that's when they're divorced."

The announcement Monday (9 July 2012) that Holmes and Cruise had settled their divorce in less than two weeks ended what many expected to be a contentious breakup spanning both coasts.

Details of the agreement remain confidential and the pair released a joint statement indicating they intend to keep it that way.

"We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents," their statement said.

Hindin says from a legal perspective it was very surprising by how quickly the case was settled.

"There are numerous inaccuracies in the reports regarding the purported contents of the agreement reached between the parties," Wolfe wrote in a statement, adding that "its terms will not be disclosed."

Tom Cruise's divorce from actress Mimi Rogers was finalized within 45 days. His divorce from Nicole Kidman took less than six months.

PAPARAZZI PHOTOGRAPHER WHO CALLED POLICE ON HEATHER LOCKLEAR CLAIMS 'CIVIC DUTY'

A photographer who called 911 to report Heather Locklear allegedly driving erratically runs a paparazzi agency and profited from images she took of the actress's subsequent arrest, the woman's attorney said Wednesday (1 OCT 2008).

But Nicholas Tepper, who represents photographer Jill Ishkanian, said in a written statement Wednesday that her phone call to authorities was motivated by "civic duty" and a concern for Locklear's safety.

He also defended Ishkanian's right to then take photos of the arrest, which took place on 27 September 2008.

"The fact she witnessed Ms. Locklear's erratic driving and reported it to the police did not mean she was disqualified from reporting the story, which she in fact did," Tepper wrote.

He said Ishkanian then sold the photos to celebrity gossip site TMZ for $27,000 - but did it through a third party, KM Press Group, because her standing in the industry has been damaged by a lawsuit against her former employer, US Weekly.

In its postings this week, TMZ questioned whether Ishkanian was "up to no good" and claimed she alerted fellow paparazzi to Locklear's impending arrest. TMZ head Harvey Levin said Wednesday that the owner of KM Press Group has repeatedly told him that one of the agency's photographers snapped the photos and that Ishkanian called to tip him off to Locklear's arrest.

Tepper said Ishkanian had been visiting family and friends in the Montecito area when she spotted Locklear's car driving erratically Saturday afternoon, called 911 and was advised by a CHP dispatcher to stop following the car.

But Levin said some of the pictures appear to be taken well before Locklear's arrest, and questioned Tepper's contention that Ishkanian just happened to run into her acting erratically at a market. At least one of the photos shows Locklear coming out of a shop.

Tepper initially said Ishkanian took all the photos after phoning authorities. But when pressed about the image of Locklear appearing to leave a store, he said he wasn't sure about the sequence that the photos were taken in, only that Ishkanian shot them all.

Levin said he did not consider the photos tainted. "Ultimately, these are photographs of an arrest."

The California Highway Patrol, which would not confirm the identity of the 911 caller, said she didn't identify that the driver was Locklear, but said the actress appeared "drunk" in a market. The CHP said in a news release that Locklear showed "obvious impairment," but alcohol has been ruled out.

Santa Barbara County prosecutors will have to decide whether to pursue charges after test results are returned that could show whether Locklear was under the influence of other substances.

CHP Lt. Dane Lobb said Wednesday that Ishkanian's involvement would not change what was going forward as a regular DUI investigation. "We determined (Locklear) was someone who shouldn't be operating a vehicle," he said.

Locklear's attorney, Blair Berk, did not return an e-mail message seeking comment Wednesday evening.

Tepper later said in an interview that Ishkanian also provided authorities with a statement and would testify against Locklear if necessary. He said Ishkanian sold the photos without disclosing that she was the shooter because of her $55 million lawsuit against US Weekly; that suit claims the magazine's employees damaged her career by accusing her of stealing information from company computers.

Federal agents later raided Ishkanian's home and business, but she has never been arrested or charged. Her lawsuit seeks damages for emotional distress, libel, slander, and conspiracy.

Tepper said Wednesday the US Weekly lawsuit has limited her business, claiming others in the industry refuse to use her material. The magazine is appealing a judge's ruling that refused to dismiss several of Ishkanian's claims.

US Weekly said through a spokesman Wednesday night that it had no comment.

After leaving the magazine, Ishkanian helped form Sunset Photo and News, a paparazzi and celebrity reporting agency.

Heather Locklear is a six-time Golden Globe nominated actress, famous for the roles in the American television shows including 'Dynasty' and 'Spin City' .

She was married to Motley Crue band member Tommy Lee until 1993 before divorcing and marrying Richie Sambora, guitarist for Bon Jovi. They divorced in 1997.

She has one daughter with Richie Sambora named Ava Elizabeth.

MCCARTNEY TO CONTACT POLICE OVER PHONE HACKING ALLEGATIONS

Former Beatle Paul McCartney said on Thursday (5 August 2011) he would contact police over his ex-wife''s claim that the couple had been spied upon by a British newspaper.

In comments to U.S. television journalists delivered via videolink from Cincinnati, Ohio, McCartney said that he would be in touch with law enforcement as soon as he was finished with his summer tour.

"I will be talking to them about that," McCartney told the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles, just hours before a performance.

"I don''t think it''s great. I do think it is a horrendous violation of privacy, and I do think it''s been going on a long time, and I do think more people than we know knew about it. But I think I should just listen and hear what the facts are before I comment," he said.

McCartney is the latest celebrity to be dragged into Britain''s phone hacking scandal, which centers on allegations that journalists routinely eavesdropped on private phone messages, bribed police officers for tips and illegally obtained confidential information for stories.

Until recently the scandal was largely been limited to the British arm of Rupert Murdoch''s media empire, but an allegation made on Wednesday by McCartney''s former wife Heather Mills implicates the Trinity Mirror PLC group of newspapers, and CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan, who once edited the group''s flagship Daily Mirror tabloid.

It is one of several indications that the phone hacking scandal could yet spread to other British newspapers _ even the Guardian, which helped unearth the scandal.

Mills'' allegation, made Wednesday in an interview with the BBC, was that a senior Mirror journalist admitted to her that his paper had been spying on her messages.

While the broadcaster said that the unidentified man was not Piers Morgan, the former model''s allegation echoes a claim Morgan himself made back in 2006 _ a few months after the couple began divorce proceedings.

In an article published by the Daily Mail, Morgan said that he had been played a tape of a message McCartney had left on Mills'' cell phone in the wake of one of their fights.

"It was heartbreaking," Morgan wrote. "He sounded lonely, miserable and desperate, and even sang ''We Can Work It Out'' into the answerphone."

Questions over how Piers Morgan came to hear such a message have led several British lawmakers to call on him to return to the U.K. and explain himself.

Morgan has so far not offered comment on his article, although he did describe Mills'' allegation as unsubstantiated and noted that the judge in the couple''s divorce case had cast aspersions on her credibility.

He has repeatedly denied having ever ordered anyone to spy on others'' voicemails, while his former newspaper group has insisted that its journalists obey the law.

Mills'' office on Thursday declined to elaborate on what she told the BBC, but said that the 43-year-old "looks forward to receiving Piers Morgan''s answer as to how he knew the content of her private voicemail messages."

Several British parliamentarians have also said that Morgan has questions to answer _ among them Conservative legislator Therese Coffey.

"I think it would help everybody, including himself and this investigation, if he was able to say more about why he wrote what he did in 2006," Coffey told the BBC Wednesday.

Morgan''s publicist, Meghan McPartland, said that as far as she knew the CNN star _ who is spending his summer working as a judge on "America''s Got Talent" _ was not returning to England to answer questions.

Morgan himself made light of the calls on his Twitter feed, saying he found it "so heartwarming that everyone in U.K.''s missing me so much they want me to come home."

ASIA MOURNS THE DEATH OF 'WHITE DRAGON KING'

In the western world, the name of 'White Dragon King' mystic was known among few people.

But in Asia the death of Chinese-Thai soothsayer grieves many of his believers and disciples.

Hundreds of believers including stars and celebrities, mostly from Hong Kong and Taiwan, have thronged to attend the funeral at a temple in Chonburi, Thai's eastern province.

They flew in Sunday to pay the last respects to their revered mentor, who died from bronchitis in the age of 76.

The White Dragon King - or Bak Lung-wong - is famously known for having blessed many stars and celebrities, especially in East Asian entertainment industry.

They had sought his advices in both career and personal wises.

Yvonne Voon Yian Sing traveled from Malaysia after she heard about his death. She once sought advice from the White Dragon King about her business.

She expressed her sadness over the passing of the White Dragon King.

"My husband and I were very very sad. Well, very shock. We did not expect that he passed away so suddenly."

Bak Lung-wong, real name Chow Yam-nam, was born on May 5, 1937 to Chinese family in Thailand.

He had a vision of Chinese deity, a great white dragon, when he was 13.

Mr. Chow taught himself palmistry, soothsaying and fengshui.

He was said to have gained the white dragon superpower and become a channel between heaven and mankind that draw hundreds of believers seeking a blessing from him.

JUDGE REFUSES BRAD PITT'S REQUEST TO SEAL CUSTODY FILINGS

A judge on Wednesday (07 DEC.) rejected Brad Pitt's request to seal details about custody arrangements in his divorce from Angelina Jolie Pitt.

Los Angeles Superior Court Richard J. Burdge Jr. denied Pitt's request in a brief written order that states the filing did not meet the requirements for sealing details at this time. Pitt had sought to seal details of his custody dispute with Jolie Pitt at an emergency hearing, but Burdge declined to hear the petition on an expedited basis.

Pitt's motion came two days after the release of a custody agreement that he and his estranged wife reached in late October. The agreement calls for the actor to have visitation with his children under the guidance of a therapist.

Pitt intends to seek temporary custody orders soon, and his filing states that he wanted those documents sealed to protect the children's privacy. He was also seeking the sealing of any custody-related filings.

"I am extremely concerned that if court records regarding custody are not sealed, information contained therein will cause irreparable damage to our children's privacy rights," Pitt wrote in a sworn declaration filed Wednesday.

Pitt's attorney Gary Fishbein declined comment after the hearing.

Jolie Pitt filed for divorce in September and currently has primary custody of their six children.

The divorce filing came days after a disagreement broke out on private flight ferrying the actors and their children from France to Los Angeles. Pitt was accused of being abusive toward his 15-year-old son during the flight, but investigations by child welfare officials and the FBI were closed with no charges being filed against the actor.

After filing for divorce, Jolie Pitt's attorney said it was done "for the health of the family."

Custody has been the primary issue in the divorce. Jolie Pitt is seeking sole custody of the children, while Pitt is seeking joint custody. A final agreement will be part of the couple's divorce judgment when it is entered.

California law favors joint custody, although details about custody arrangements are rarely made public in celebrity divorce cases.

Jolie Pitt's attorney Laura Wasser said the actress does not oppose sealing details of the pair's custody arrangements, but Pitt's attorneys did not consult with them before filing the motion Wednesday.

Pitt and Jolie were married for two years and together for 12 years after becoming close while filming 2005's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

Model Heather Mills on Wednesday accused a senior journalist with Britain''s Trinity Mirror group of newspapers of boasting that her phone messages had been intercepted.

In an interview with the BBC''s "Newsnight" program, the ex-wife of former Beatle Paul McCartney claimed that she was called several years ago by a senior editorial figure with the Mirror who quoted - word-for-word - the phone messages left by McCartney on her answering machine.

Mills said that the journalist in 2001 told her: "Oh, I hear you''ve had a big argument with your boyfriend." Mills and McCartney got married only in 2002.

"And I said: ''Why would you know this?'' And he started quoted verbatim the messages from my machine," she said.

Mills added that when she accused the journalist of hacking into her phone, he laughed and admitted that the conversations had indeed been lifted from her voice messages. When she threatened the journalist with legal action he promised not to write a story based on the intercepts, she said.

Messages left for Mills on a number associated with her website were not immediately returned.

Trinity Mirror PLC has consistently refused to answer questions about the past conduct of its journalists, saying only that its employees follow the law.

The publisher - which puts out Britain''s left-leaning Daily Mirror and its sister-paper, the Sunday Mirror - has come under increased scrutiny following revelations that the now-defunct News of the World tabloid of its rival News International eavesdropped on a host of prominent figures. Particular attention has been focused on the Daily Mirror''s former editor, Piers Morgan, who has long maintained that phone hacking was widespread across the British newspaper industry and that he was well-aware of the practice.

Morgan has denied that he himself hacked into phones or that he knowingly put out stories based on hacked conversations.

Mills named the journalist in her interview, but the BBC bleeped out his name, citing legal reasons.

The BBC did say, however, that the journalist was not Morgan.

Joe Giudice (JOO'-dice), the husband of "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice, reported to prison Wednesday (23 MARCH 2016) to begin a 41-month sentence on fraud charges.

The couple pleaded guilty in 2014 to bankruptcy fraud, and Joe Giudice pleaded guilty to not paying about $200,000 in taxes.

Joe Giudice reported to Fort Dix's federal prison in New Jersey around noon Wednesday, according to family attorney James Leonard. He was escorted to the prison by his wife, brother, sister, and others.

"It was obviously a very emotional day, but this is a very strong family with a tremendous support system and they will get through this, just as they did when Teresa was away," Leonard said in a statement.

The judge staggered their sentences so that one of them would be able to take care of their four young daughters. Teresa Giudice completed a 15-month sentence in December.

The two pleaded admitted they hid assets from bankruptcy creditors and submitted phony loan applications to get $5 million in mortgages and construction loans. Joe Giudice also admitted he didn't pay about $200,000 in taxes.

Under their plea agreement, they were ordered to pay $414,000 in restitution.

Giudice has been living in the country illegally since he was an infant, and under federal immigration laws will be deported to Italy after completing his sentence. With time off for good behavior, that could come in about 35 months, attorney Miles Feinstein said.

Giudice's federal sentence will run concurrent with an 18-month state sentence for unlawful use of an ID and impersonation, stemming from his 2014 guilty plea in an unrelated case. He was charged with using his brother's identity to obtain a driver's license while his own license was suspended for driving while intoxicated in 2010.

JUDGE GRANTS CHARLIE SHEEN'S EX FIANCEE TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER

A judge on Friday (8 APRIL 2016) granted Charlie Sheen's ex-fiancée a temporary restraining order after she cited threats the actor made toward her and two 2014 incidents of alleged domestic violence.

Superior Court Judge Alicia Blanco approved the stay-away order Friday based on Scottine Ross' application stating she was fearful of the actor because he purportedly threatened her life on an audio recording obtained by the celebrity website RadarOnline.com.

Ross' filing also stated Sheen kicked her on the ground in January 2014 and choked her to the point she almost lost consciousness a few months later.

Emails to Sheen's publicist and lawyer seeking comment were not immediately returned.

The order requires Sheen to refrain from contacting Ross; to stay 100 yards from her, her home, workplace and car; and to turn in any guns he may own. The order also allows Ross, who performed in adult films under the name Brett Rossi, to record any conversations she has with the actor.

There are no indications in the filing that Sheen has sought to contact Ross recently.

Los Angeles police confirmed Wednesday they're investigating Sheen after receiving a criminal report last week. They haven't identified the alleged victim or the exact nature of the investigation, which is being headed by detectives from a unit that investigates serious stalking and criminal threats cases.

RadarOnline has said it was served with a warrant seeking audio that is purportedly of Sheen threatening to bury Ross, whose relationship with the actor ended in 2014. The website has said it believes the warrant is illegal.

Ross is suing Sheen, claiming he had sex with her without disclosing he has HIV. That case is being handled in arbitration.

A hearing to extend the temporary restraining order has been set for April 28 in Santa Monica.

CELEBRITY "TOP 40" RADIO HOST CASEY KASEM FOUND

Casey Kasem was found in Washington state on Wednesday, three days after a Los Angeles judge expressed concerns about the ailing radio host's whereabouts and safety amid a dispute between his wife and children from another marriage.

Kasem's condition was not immediately known, although his children rejoiced after days of uncertainty and said in a statement that locating their father was the first step in bringing him back to the Los Angeles area.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Mario Toti said Kasem was found by the Kitsap County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday, hours after Kasem's children filed a missing person's report.

Kasem's daughter Kerri, who was appointed his temporary conservator at a court hearing on Monday, had to wait for court filings before she was able to file the report.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered adult protective services and court investigators to try to locate Kasem after an attorney for his wife told the court that the former "Top 40" host was no longer in the United States but he did not know where he was.

Kerri Kasem's attorney Troy Martin said during the hearing that Kasem may have been moved to an Indian reservation but was not sure because he had been frequently moved from medical facilities.

"We are grateful to the local authorities for finding my dad," Kerri Kasem wrote in a statement. "We are one step closer to bringing him home."

Danny Deraney, a spokesman for three of Kasem's children, said Thursday that the former radio host wasn't found on a reservation. Calls to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Department seeking additional details were not returned.

Deraney said the family still had "grave concerns" about Casey Kasem's health.

Casey Kasem, 82, has been in poor health in recent years. Kerri Kasem's court filings state her father is suffering from a form of dementia called Lewy Body Disease that had previously been incorrectly diagnosed as an advanced form of Parkinson's disease.

Until Monday, Casey Kasem's wife of 34 years, Jean, had been in control of his medical care and controlled access to him. She has blocked three of Kasem's children from a previous marriage, including Kerri Kasem, from seeing him in recent months, according to court filings.

Jean Kasem's attorney Craig Marcus argued Monday that his client had the right to move her husband to any facility she saw fit.

Murphy said he had the authority to order an investigation into Casey Kasem's whereabouts and appointed an independent attorney and doctor to evaluate the radio host.

Casey Kasem gained fame with his radio music countdown shows, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," and was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo."

Murphy scheduled a hearing for June 20 to receive updates on Kasem's health and well-being.

One of Hollywood's most iconic leading men, Michael Douglas was honored for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival with the Award for Excellence in Film named for his father, Kirk Douglas.

Previous recipients of this prestigious honor include John Travolta, Ed Harris, Quentin Tarantino, and Harrison Ford.

"It is the last time I am going to present the award so I am very happy that Michael agreed to accept it and I am very happy that he brought his beautiful wife along too," Kirk Douglas said.

With two Oscars to his name, Michael Douglas has the credits to back up his father's prestigious award.

The bunch shared their most memorable stories about Douglas' earlier days.

"Michael and I did a picture about 16 years ago called 'American President,' and I really love the movie and I feel very lucky that I got to do it," recalled Annette Benning.

Comedic host Dennis Miller remembered his first encounter with Michael Douglas over 20 years ago in the thriller he starred in with Demi Moore.

"Well I did a movie with Michael called 'Disclosure,' and I remember standing there, it was my first big movie," explained Miller.

"I am standing there, and I don't really know what I am doing and I said, 'Hey with acting is it different?" He said, 'Listen we are supposed to be good friends in this movie, make me laugh. While DeVito and his comedic wife Rhea Perlman joked their way down the carpet as they remembered their good friend Michael Douglas.

"I think Santa Barbara really does something to you Dan," Rhea Perlman said to DeVito.

"Yeah, that tab of acid didn't hurt either," DeVito responded with a smile.

"It takes you right back to your early Michael Douglas, Danny days, so I've heard," shrugged Perlman with laughter.

Up next for Douglas is a biopic on Liberace.

The project has finally received a green light from HBO.

The film is a look at the famed pianist's relationship with his younger live-in lover at a time when coming out could kill a career. It is scheduled to start shooting next summer.

ARNOLD AND MARIA STILL LOVE EACH OTHER

At times, the marriage of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver looked like a fairy tale come true. But the public record is replete with problems that would strain any union, and recent glimpses into their lives suggested something amiss with a couple who often waxed publicly about their love for one another.

Since his term as California governor ended in early January, Schwarzenegger has hopscotched around the world, his wife nowhere in sight. Shriver posted three Twitter updates on April 26, their 25th wedding anniversary, without mentioning the milestone.

On Monday, they announced they were separating. "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together," they said in a brief statement that could signal a private breakup rather than a public court battle.

On Tuesday, in his first public comments since the announcement, Schwarzenegger thanked friends and family for an outpouring of support.

"We both love each other very much," Schwarzenegger said at a Los Angeles event marking Israeli independence. "We are taking one day at a time." He also said he had spoken to Shriver earlier in the day.

If Schwarzenegger, 63, appeared confident about the future since exiting politics, cutting movie deals and fashioning himself as a global spokesman for green energy, Shriver, 55, known for her confidence, seemed unsettled.

Shriver appears without a wedding ring in videos posted recently on YouTube and talks about stress in her life, the weight of expectations and the search for faith in a troubled world.

"It is so stressful to not know what you're doing next," she says grimly in one online video posted in March.

Schwarzenegger has a temper and a biting wit, and there were occasional spats behind the scenes in their Sacramento days, but the marriage unspooled with a minimum of public drama. Shriver moved quietly out of the couple's gated estate a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, but they remain on speaking terms and had brunch with their children on Mother's Day.

In their statement, they said they would live apart, "work on the future of our relationship" and continue to parent their four children - Katherine, 21, Christina, 19, Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13. The only word from the family Tuesday came in a tweet from Patrick: "Small speed bump ... luckily we own (H)ummers, we will cruise right over it. All will be okay."

The announcement came just over 25 years after the couple wed on a spring day on Cape Cod. They seemed to have little in common aside from celebrity and a hunger for success: a Republican bodybuilder-actor with a history of womanizing, and a princess of the Kennedy clan who was a rising network newscaster.

Shriver, who lost two uncles to assassins' bullets, never wanted her husband to enter politics, but supported him when he did. After Schwarzenegger won a second term In 2006, they kissed on stage at a celebration rally as a blizzard of balloons fell around them and their children.

They entered their marriage with separate fortunes and legacies, and the script for whether and how they end that union largely depends on decisions they've already made.

They said in their statement they have not filed formal court papers. It is unknown whether the pair have any agreement that would divide up their assets, which include their secluded estate in Los Angeles and a home near the coast in Malibu.

Economic disclosure forms filed when Schwarzenegger left as California governor in January show he has interests in at least eight entities worth $1 million or more. An exact tally of his wealth is impossible to calculate, although the forms show the "Terminator" star still retains rights to intellectual property from his days as a fitness guru and movie star.

Shriver's holdings are more modest, but are listed in the disclosure as being worth more than $1 million. She is a member of the Kennedy family and is a beneficiary of some of its assets, and also owns rights and royalties from her work as an author, the filings show.

Shriver maintained her own identity when her husband entered politics, though she gave up her job at NBC. Their union was often tested in Sacramento, where the former action star contended with a rough seven years of legislative gridlock, a budget crisis and lingering questions about his fidelity.

Shriver stood by her husband during his 2003 gubernatorial campaign after the Los Angeles Times reported accusations that he had a history of groping women. Schwarzenegger later said he "behaved badly sometimes."

In 2006, Schwarzenegger settled a libel lawsuit with a former late-night British TV personality who claimed she was groped by the Hollywood actor during a 2000 interview and later defamed by his aides during the 2003 campaign. In 2004, a judge dismissed a similar libel lawsuit filed against Schwarzenegger by Rhonda Miller, who accused him of groping her.

While Schwarzenegger was governor, Shriver and their children never moved to Sacramento, preferring their homes in the Los Angeles area. Schwarzenegger commuted by private jet between his family and the state capital.

Shriver often lamented the loss of her TV job. More recently, she has struggled with the death of her father, Peace Corps founder and former vice presidential candidate Sargent Shriver, in January.

A separation doesn't always signal a divorce is imminent, said Charlotte Goldberg, a family law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

"Some people separate in order to try to work things out, to see if they can reconcile and come back together," Goldberg said.

That was the case for talk show host Larry King and his wife, Shawn, who kicked off a bitter divorce struggle last year before deciding to stay together. Similarly, actors David Arquette and Courtney Cox announced last year they were separating, but have yet to file any formal paperwork to make their split official.

Steve Mindel, a Los Angeles family law attorney with more than 25 years of experience, said the fact that the pair issued a statement rather than filing court papers signals they may be working toward a deal that will keep most of the details of their breakup private. Several celebrities have recently taken that course, including singer Christina Aguilera and comedian George Lopez.

Both of their breakups were announced through publicists before any paperwork was filed, and neither case produced acidic court filings that have become the hallmark of other stars' breakups.

Unless Schwarzenegger and Shriver have a property agreement, in California any assets they accrued throughout the marriage are split 50/50. Once they separate, their earnings become their own.

That may be significant for Schwarzenegger, who has said he hopes to revive the film career he placed on hold when he was elected governor in 2003. Shriver, a successful television journalist who is a member of Kennedy family, has said she doesn't foresee a return to on-camera journalism.

As for their two youngest children, Goldberg said they're old enough that they'll likely have some say in any custody agreement.

She and Mindel said the couple seemed to be handling the announcement of their split with class.

"They've gone through a lot together," Goldberg said. "Sometimes marriages fail even after a long period of time."

NO SETTLEMENT IN KIM KARDASHIAN DIVORCE CASE

Attorneys did not reach a settlement in Kim Kardashian's divorce case after settlement negotiations that were attended by the reality star but not her estranged husband Kris Humphries.

Humphries' attorneys declined to comment on settlement discussions Friday (12 April) but said a May 6 trial date remains. A judge sealed settlement discussions, but any agreement would have been put on the record after the hearing.

Associated Press celebrity court reporter Anthony McCartney was outside the courtroom during the closed proceedings and says no reason was given for Humphries' absence.

"There wasn't any explanation from his attorneys about why he didn't report today. There wasn't an explanation given by the court on the record. So really we don't know why he wasn't here. His team, the Brooklyn Nets, does have a game on Friday evening in Indiana," said McCartney.

The pair will get another chance to settle their divorce case, and this time a judge wants the NBA player to attend.

Superior Court Judge Hank Goldberg set a mandatory settlement conference for April 19 to try to resolve the couple's long-running divorce.

Kardashian was flanked by deputies as she left the courthouse shortly around noon.

The reality star wants a divorce to end her 72-day marriage to Humphries, but the NBA player wants it annulled. He claims the marriage was based on fraud, which he would have to prove at trial.

"This is unusual because Kris Humphries is asking for an annulment," said McCartney. Humphries, a power forward for the Brooklyn Nets, has not yet laid out his specifics to support his fraud claim, but his former attorney has said Humphries wants an annulment because of his belief that Kardashian only married him because of her reality show.

Kardashian and her lawyer have denied the accusation.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star arrived under heavy security and was brought into the courtroom through a back entrance. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail and she kept her hands crossed on her lap while she listened to Judge Hank Goldberg explain to reporters that the hearing would be closed.

"I always wanted to be a juror," she joked to deputies before taking her seat.

Kardashian is expecting a child with boyfriend Kanye West later this year. She appeared in court wearing white pants and a long ornate gray jacket, but was not accompanied by West or any members of her famous family.

Her mother, Kris Jenner, is expected to testify on her daughter's behalf at the trial. Humphries has not yet filed his witness list for the trial, which is expected to last a week.

PIERS MORGAN DRAWN INTO HEATHER MILLS'' HACKING ALLEGATIONS

British lawmakers say CNN interviewer Piers Morgan should return to Britain to answer allegations that the newspaper group he worked for hacked the voicemail of Paul McCartney''s ex-wife.

From 1995 to 2004, Morgan edited the Daily Mirror tabloid, which is part of the Trinity Mirror PLC group.

McCartney''s ex-wife Heather Mills has accused a reporter working for Trinity Mirror of intercepting her voicemail messages in 2001, but has not specified which newspaper.

Conservative legislator Therese Coffey, a member of a Parliamentary committee examining Britain''s phone-hacking scandal, said Morgan should return to London to assist.

Labour Party deputy leader Harriet Harman agreed that Morgan had "questions to answer."

He has denied any knowledge of phone hacking.

On Wednesday (3 August 2011), Mills accused a senior journalist, who worked for Britain''s Trinity Mirror group of newspapers, of boasting that her phone messages had been intercepted.

In an interview with the BBC''s "Newsnight" program, the ex-wife of former Beatle Paul McCartney claimed that she was called several years ago by a senior editorial figure with the Mirror who quoted - word-for-word - the phone messages left by McCartney on her answering machine.

Mills said that the journalist in 2001 told her: "Oh, I hear you''ve had a big argument with your boyfriend." Mills and McCartney got married only in 2002.

"And I said: ''Why would you know this?'' And he started quoted verbatim the messages from my machine," she said.

Mills added that when she accused the journalist of hacking into her phone, he laughed and admitted that the conversations had indeed been lifted from her voice messages.

When she threatened the journalist with legal action he promised not to write a story based on the intercepts, she said.

Messages left for Mills were not immediately returned.

Trinity Mirror PLC has consistently refused to answer questions about the past conduct of its journalists, saying only that its employees follow the law.

The publisher - which puts out Britain''s left-leaning Daily Mirror and its sister-paper, the Sunday Mirror - has come under increased scrutiny following revelations that the now-defunct News of the World tabloid of its rival News International eavesdropped on a host of prominent figures.

Particular attention has been focused on the Daily Mirror''s former editor, Piers Morgan, who has long maintained that phone hacking was widespread across the British newspaper industry and that he was well-aware of the practice.

Morgan has denied that he himself hacked into phones or that he knowingly put out stories based on hacked conversations.

Mills named the journalist in her interview, but the BBC bleeped out his name, citing legal reasons.

The BBC did say, however, that the journalist was not Morgan.

Uma Thurman, star of the "Kill Bill" thrillers and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," will marry financier Arpad "Arki" Busson, according to British newspaper The Times.

The couple announced their engagement in the newspaper on Saturday June 28.

The newspaper announcement states:

"The engagement is announced between Arpad, son of Mr Pascal Busson, of Paris, and Mrs Florence Harcourt-Smith, of South Of France, and Uma, daughter of Mr and Mrs A.F. Thurman, of New York."

On Friday in the New York Daily News and People Magazine also reported on the engagement.

The pair apparently began dating last summer after attending a private dinner together in Milan, Italy.

Busson surprised Thurman with the ring last week in London, where the couple attended the 90th birthday party for Nelson Mandela, according to the Daily News.

It would be the third marriage for the 38-year-old Thurman, who has a son and daughter with actor and ex-husband Ethan Hawke, whom she divorced in 2003.

Thurman was previously married to actor Gary Oldman.

Busson has two sons with supermodel Elle MacPherson, from whom he split in 2005.

No wedding date was announced.

MURDOCH ARRIVES AT CHURCH FOR WEDDING TO JERRY HALL

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch arrived at St. Bride's church in London on Saturday to celebrate his marriage to model-actress Jerry Hall a day earlier.

Murdoch and Hall will hold a celebration ceremony at St. Bride's, the journalists' church, in London's Fleet Street.

Britain's newspapers were based in Fleet Street until Murdoch moved his printing presses to east London in 1986 to escape the grip of the powerful printers' unions. The rest of the print media soon followed, but the area remains the spiritual home of British journalism.

The couple married on Friday in London's Spencer House, which was built in the 18th century by ancestors of the late Princess Diana.

Murdoch's News UK confirmed that 84-year-old Murdoch and Hall, 59, had married, after announcing their engagement in January,

It is the fourth marriage for Murdoch, who owns Fox News Channel, movie studio Twenty-First Century Fox, publisher HarperCollins and newspapers in Britain and the United States. Murdoch has six children from his three previous marriages.

It is the first marriage for Texas-born Hall, a former supermodel and long-term partner of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. She and Jagger, who have four children together, had an unofficial private Hindu marriage ceremony in Bali, Indonesia, in 1990. During divorce proceedings in 1999 a British court declared the marriage invalid.

JIM CARREY CALLS SUIT OVER EX-'S DEATH 'HEARTLESS'

Jim Carrey says a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estranged husband of his ex-girlfriend is a heartless attempt to exploit him and vowed to fight the case.

Mark Burton of Portland sued Carrey in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday (19 SEPT. 2016), accusing the actor of providing the prescription drugs his wife Cathriona White used to overdose in September 2015. The wrongful death lawsuit contends Carrey improperly obtained prescriptions for Ambien and the powerful opioid oxycodone under the alias Arthur King.

The suit accuses Carrey of giving White the medications days before she was found dead in one of Carrey's homes. White and Carrey dated in 2012 and were photographed together in May 2015.

"What a terrible shame," Carrey wrote in a statement. "It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man's lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world."

"I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved," Carrey wrote. "I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace."

Coroner's officials ruled the 30-year-old makeup artist's death a suicide.

Burton and White married in 2013. A coroner's official told reporters that the pair were separated and planned to divorce, however Burton's attorney Michael Avenatti declined to characterize their relationship beyond saying they were legally married at the time of White's death.

Carrey's attorney Marty Singer wrote in a statement that White and Burton never lived together.

The lawsuit accuses Carrey of violating a section of California's Health and Safety Code against the use of aliases to obtain prescription medications.

"White's death was tragic and easily avoidable," the lawsuit states.

Carrey's prescriptions were legally obtained and his doctor and insurers were aware of his alias use, Singer wrote. He said many actors use aliases for prescriptions to protect their privacy.

The issue of prescriptions issued to a celebrity under aliases because an issue when Los Angeles prosecutors attempted unsuccessfully to obtain felony convictions against two of Anna Nicole Smith's doctors and her lawyer-boyfriend over prescription drugs she obtained before her accidental overdose in 2007.

Defense lawyers contended the aliases were used to protect Smith's privacy, and last year a judge who dismissed the final felony counts against Smith's confidante Howard K. Stern said it was a common practice.

"Everyone did it," Judge Robert J. Perry said in July 2015. "Everyone did it to protect her privacy from the prying eyes of the ever-present press representatives in Ms. Smith's life."

MEDIA CAMP OUTSIDE FIRED SHEEN'S HOME

Several news camera crews were camped outside Charlie Sheen's gated neighborhood, Mulholland Estates, Monday in hopes that he'd emerge to discuss his dismissal from "Two and a Half Men" by Warner Bros.

A few news helicopters also surveyed the scene from above the Hollywood Hills.

Charlie Sheen was fired Monday from the comedy following the hard-living actor's bouts of wild partying, repeated hospitalizations and a bitter media campaign against his studio bosses.

The action was taken after "careful consideration" and was effective immediately, the studio said in a statement. No decision has been made on the

show's future without its star, Warner spokesman Paul McGuire said.

Sheen, 45, who has used TV, radio and social media to create a big megaphone for himself, was not silent for long.

In a text to The Associated Press, he responded by referring to his bosses with the F-word and, "They lose," followed by the word "Trolls."

Asked if he planned to sue, Sheen texted back, "Big."

As for his next move, Sheen texted, "A big one."

A call to his attorney, Marty Singer, seeking comment was not immediately returned Monday. CBS declined to comment.

The firing capped a rare, raging public battle between a Hollywood star and those who employ him, with Sheen claiming the right to live as he pleased - including the acknowledged use of illegal drugs, although he's said he is currently clean - as long as he showed up sober and ready to work.

"Two and a Half Men," which debuted in 2003, stars Sheen as womanizing bachelor Charlie Harper, who creates an ad hoc family with his neurotic

brother, the divorced Alan (Jon Cryer) and Alan's son, Jake (Angus T. Jones).

The show was co-created by veteran producer Chuck Lorre, who contributes two other comedies to the top-rated CBS lineup, "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly." Like "Men," both are produced with Warner.

Sheen focused many of his attacks on Lorre, and in the end the studio "went with the hit-maker," said media industry analyst Shari Anne Brill.

Warner and CBS had long faced a balancing act with Sheen as he underwent rehab and two ugly splits from wives No. 2 (Denise Richards) and No. 3 (Brooke Mueller Sheen).

On one side was the wayward star, on the other was American TV's most successful and highly lucrative sitcom, anchoring Monday for CBS and making hundreds of millions of dollars for Warner.

Last month, Warner canceled the remaining eight episodes of what was intended to be a 24-episode season of "Men," citing Sheen's public behavior and rants against Lorre.

In a series of interviews, including with ABC's "Good Morning America" and NBC's "Today" show, Sheen boasted about his "epic" partying, said

he's fueled by "violent hatred" of his bosses and claimed to have kicked drugs at home in his "Sober Valley Lodge."

He glorified himself as a "rock star from Mars" with "fire breathing fists" and "Adonis DNA" and talked about his home life with two women he nicknamed his "goddesses."

The actor, who was among TV's highest-paid at a reported $1.8 million per episode for "Men," brashly said at one point that he would ask for $3

million if he signed a new contract for future seasons.

There was public fascination with the gloves-off battle. When Sheen added Twitter to the arsenal, he gained 1 million followers in an unprecedentedly brief 25 hours, leading Guinness World Records to establish a new category and crown him the champion. He now has well over 2 million followers.

But Sheen's professional conflict devolved into a custody battle over his 23-month-old twin sons with estranged wife Mueller Sheen. She used his public remarks, as well as conduct she claimed was threatening and violent, to seek a court order removing the children from his home last week.

While Sheen's text to AP suggested his next major role could be that of plaintiff in a lawsuit, the immediate question for Warner and CBS was whether to keep the show alive by bringing in a new cast member to join Cryer and Jones - the one-and-a-half men left.

"They didn't say the show was canceled. They said he was canceled," said analyst Brill. "So the door is still open for another season."

Shows have replaced stars before and lived to fight for ratings another day. When Valerie Harper left "Valerie" after the 1986-87 season in a

dispute with producers, the show was renamed "The Hogan Family," SandyDuncan was brought in to play a new character and the sitcom continued until 1991.

Drew Carey, who starred in and co-created "The Drew Carey Show," was asked about the possibility recently, before Sheen's firing.

"All you have to do is bring in someone you can plug into a Charlie Sheen-like character and deliver those kinds of lines. There are 100 actors

who could do it," said Carey, host of "The Price Is Right."

Carey said he wasn't dismissing Sheen's comedic talent and acknowledged that ratings might suffer if viewers are reluctant to accept a new actor in a new role. But Holland Taylor, who plays Sheen's mother, called him "the brand of the show" in an interview last summer.

The studio, however, could save money by paying the substitute far less than Sheen's salary and extend the life of the lucrative series by another

season or two.

CBS Corp. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves, interviewed at an investors' conference Monday morning, sidestepped the Sheen controversy when it was brought up by Deutsche Bank analyst Doug Mitchelson.

When Moonves discussed controlling series' costs by making "adjustments," such as "let's say, not renewing some high-priced actors," Mitchelson asked if Moonves had ever successfully replaced a show's lead actor before.

Moonves remained silent, and the analyst apologized and said he'd promised "no Charlie Sheen questions."

Despite his troubled personal life, or perhaps because of it, Sheen found an on-screen niche as the bad boy audiences loved, especially in "Two and a Half Men."

But he had an ugly history, with allegations of violence against women, including Mueller Sheen. On Christmas Day 2009 in Aspen, Colorado, she told police that Sheen threatened to kill her and brandished a knife after she asked for a divorce. Sheen said they argued but denied threatening her.

In a plea deal, Sheen pleaded guilty to misdemeanor third-degree assault in exchange for the prosecution dropping two more serious charges, and was sentenced to 30 days in a rehabilitation center and 30 days of probation.

CBS is owned by CBS Corp., whose shares were up 6 cents at $23.68 in after-hours trading Monday after closing down 34 cents, or 1.4 percent, at

$23.62 in the regular session.

Shares of Warner Bros. parent Time Warner Inc. were down a penny at $36.77 in the extended session after losing 47 cents, or 1.3 percent, to close at $36.78.

The market had closed before the statement about Sheen's firing was released by Warner.

Scarlett Johansson made a rare public appearance since news broke that she is getting divorced.

The actress, along with fashion designer Donatella Versace, was honored by amfAR Wednesday (8 FEB. 2017) in New York at their annual gala ahead of New York Fashion Week.

The AIDS research organization honored both women for their longstanding support in the fight against the deadly disease.

Versace had a quick response when asked how she reacted to the honor.

"I say yay," the designer said as she waved her arms in the air.

Johansson posed for photographers, and walked past a line of television reporters as she rushed inside.

She did speak briefly to the Associated Press about this evening's honor.

"I'm deeply, deeply touched - really deeply touched to be here," Johansson said.

"It's a wonderful organization and such an important cause with 37 million people today still living and struggling with HIV AIDS, and it's important that we remember that and never forget," she added.

It was announced last month that Johansson and husband Romain Dauric were divorcing. The pair were married for two years, and have a two-year-old daughter. The couple had not been in seen in public since last fall. It was announced they separated last summer.

Other attendees at the amfAR gala included Paris Hilton and model Adriana Lima.

Hilton spoke of amfAR's continued relevance.

"People need to know that it is still happening. It's very serious, you need to be careful, and we need to find a cure because people are dying every single day, and a lot of people can't find the right treatments. That's why we're all here tonight to raise money to stop it," she said.

Lima said she feels proud of the fashion industry's involvement with the organization.

"I really believe that it's very touching that for the kick-off of fashion week to start with such a great event, that's amfAR, to help and raise funds to find a cure for HIV," said the Victoria's Secret Angel.

The star-studded event included actors, musicians, and fashion designers. Among them: Kenneth Cole, Zac Posen, Iman, Heidi Klum, and Jeremy Piven.

amfAR is one of the world's leading non-profit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, and treatment education. Since 1985, amfAR has invested $450 million (USD) in its programs and has awarded more than 3,300 grants to research teams worldwide.

The annual gala kicked off New York Fashion Week and featured a performance by Grammy-nominated British pop sensation Ellie Goulding.
