JUDGE ORDERS BIEBER VIDEO RELEASED WITH BLACKOUTS

Remaining police video clips of Justin Bieber after his January arrest will be made public with sensitive portions blacked out to protect the singer's privacy, a judge ruled Tuesday (4 MARCH 2014.)

Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield said two of the five unreleased video clips depict the singer's genitalia during a urine test for drugs at the Miami Beach Police Department. Altfield agreed with lawyers for Bieber, who turned 20 on Saturday, that the video's airing would be an invasion of privacy that outweighed the public's right to know.

"Mr. Bieber's right to privacy is paramount," the judge said. "He has not lost his right to privacy, and that is what is important here."

Separately, the Miami Beach Police Department made public a new set of 18 photos taken shortly after Bieber's arrest, mainly close-ups of his many tattoos - a praying Jesus, a grinning joker's face accompanied by the word "love," a Psalms quotation, and more - and one full-length picture of the singer.

Attorneys for The Associated Press and other news outlets had previously suggested any sensitive portions be blacked out and the rest released under Florida's liberal open records laws. Much of the footage was released last week, some of it showing Bieber walking unsteadily during a sobriety test.

Bieber has pleaded not guilty to charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license. He and R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff were arrested early on Jan. 23 during what police called an illegal street drag race between a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. Neither has been charged with drag racing.

Bieber attorney Roy Black said he was satisfied with the ruling, as did media attorneys. AP attorney Deanna Shullman said the news organization would never show Bieber's private parts, and Scott Ponce, representing The Miami Herald and CBS television stations, said the ruling was more about protecting the singer from random releases on the Internet.

Black said the three clips to be released without redaction are shot from an angle that is too far away to discern what is going on.

Prosecutors said they will release all five remaining clips in a few days, after the court-ordered redactions are completed.

Evidence released previously showed that a breath test found Bieber's blood-alcohol level below the .02 threshold considered intoxicated for underage drivers. The urine test found the presence of the active ingredient in marijuana and the antianxiety drug Xanax. Bieber told officers he had been smoking marijuana before his arrest, according to police reports.

A trial date has not been set.

A May 5 trial date was set Tuesday (11 MARCH 2014) for Justin Bieber in the Florida case charging him with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and possessing an invalid driver's license.

Prosecutor Daniel Diaz-Balart also said at a brief hearing that no plea offer has been made for the 20-year-old pop singer, who has pleaded not guilty. Bieber's attorney, Roy Black, also said there was no plea deal on the table and none had been rejected, even though first offenders in most similar cases are offered a plea to avoid potential jail time.

The initial March trial date was postponed while attorneys for news organizations and Bieber wrestled with release of police videos of him giving a urine sample for a drug test. Those videos were made public last week with sensitive segments blacked out.

Bieber and R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff were arrested Jan. 23 in Miami Beach after what police called an illegal drag race with high-end sports cars. Breath tests showed Bieber's blood-alcohol content was below the 0.02 limit for underage drivers. Other tests detected marijuana and Xanax.

Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield said Sharieff has a separate April 7 trial date on a DUI charge. He too has pleaded not guilty.

Black was also asked about a deposition Bieber gave last week in a lawsuit filed by a photographer who claims he was roughed up and threatened by one of the singer's bodyguards. Video of that deposition quickly began appearing on Internet sites, which Black criticized Tuesday as an invasion of Bieber's privacy.

Among other things, Black said, Bieber was asked in the deposition about topics such as his relationships with singers Selena Gomez and Usher "that had nothing to do with the case." A judge previously denied motions to keep Bieber's deposition sealed, he added.

Pop star Justin Bieber was arrested on drag-racing, driving under the influence and resisting arrest charges Thursday after allegedly speeding down a residential Miami Beach street in a yellow Lamborghini on an expired license. He is being held at a Miami-Dade County jail pending an initial appearance expected later Thursday.

Authorities say Bieber was arrested after police saw him and R and B singer Khalil racing two luxury vehicles down the street at 4:09 a.m., with two other vehicles apparently being used to block off the area. Both Bieber and Khalil face drag-racing and driving under the influence charges.

Police Chief Ray Martinez told a news conference Thursday morning the singer was initially not cooperative when the officer pulled him over.

Martinez said the singer also had an invalid Georgia driver's license and admitted to smoking marijuana, taking prescription medication and drinking.

According to police, Bieber was driving a Lamborghini and Khalil was driving a Ferrari. Both cars were towed. Police say Bieber was clocked at around 60 mplh (100 kph) in a 30 mph (50 kph) zone.

According to the arrest report, Bieber "had slow deliberate movements" and a look of stupor on his face when the officer ordered him to exit his vehicle. The 19-year-old Bieber was placed under arrest after repeatedly refusing to put his hands on his vehicle so the officer could pat him down to look for weapons, the report said. It says he cursed several times at the officer and demanded to know why he was being arrested.

Bieber failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Miami Beach police station for a Breathalyzer, police said. Results have not been released.

Television footage early Thursday showed a van thought to be carrying Bieber from a Miami Beach police station to a Miami-Dade County jail. The van, with blacked-out windows, was trailed by squad cars.

His publicist, Melissa Victor, did not offer an immediate comment.

The street where police say Bieber was racing in mid-Miami Beach is a four-lane residential street divided by a grass median dotted with palm trees. Along one side of the street are small apartment buildings, and on the other side are a high school, a youth center, a golf course and a city firehouse.

Jose Torres, whose company is installing an alarm system at the youth center, said he's not surprised people would use the straightaway to drag race.

"This street is empty at night. There's nobody out here at night," Torres said.

It's a short drive from the area to trendy South Beach, where celebrities are known to let loose. George Avilas, who lives nearby said he didn't hear anything, but was not surprised to hear that people might be drag-racing.

"There's so much partying in Miami Beach, it's been known to happen," he said. "It's 4 o'clock in the morning, everybody is just getting out of the bars."

Bieber's arrival in Florida earlier this week also is under investigation. Authorities in the suburban Miami city of Opa-locka are investigating whether the singer was given a police escort when he landed Monday at the Opa-locka Executive Airport.

"The escort was unauthorized by police administration," said Assistant City Manager David Chiverton.

At least two marked police cars provided Bieber with an escort from the airport, but it was not clear where they went, Chiverton said.

Police escorts from the airport are not uncommon, but they must follow procedure because they involve city vehicles, Chiverton said.

"We're still unsure of where it led to," Chiverton said. There's a procedure. These things must be approved, there's a process. They used city vehicles."

Under Florida law, people under the age of 21 are considered driving under the influence if they have a blood-alcohol content of .02 percent or more - a level he could reach with one drink. For 21 and over, it is .08 percent. For a first driving under the influence offense, there is no minimum sentence and a maximum of six months, a fine of $250 to $500, and 50 hours of community service. For anyone under 21, there is an automatic six-month license suspension.

A first conviction for drag racing carries a sentence of up to six months, a fine of $500 to $1,000 and a one-year license suspension.

Earlier this month, officials said that detectives in California searched Bieber's home looking for surveillance footage that might serve as evidence the pop star was involved in an egg-tossing vandalism case that caused thousands of dollars in damage to a neighbor's home. Officials said Bieber was at the home and cooperated with authorities

In that case, authorities arrested one member of Bieber's entourage on suspicion of drug possession: Lil Za, a rapper whose real name is Xavier Smith.

After being taken to jail, Smith had felony vandalism added to his potential charges and was released on bail at about 8:15 p.m.

The singer lives in a gated community in Calabasas, a celebrity enclave about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Previous investigations into Bieber's conduct by the sheriff's department have not resulted in charges.

In October, prosecutors declined to charge Bieber after a neighbor complained he drove recklessly through the area. Prosecutors in November 2012 also declined to charge the singer after a paparazzo accused him of punching and hitting him after leaving a Calabasas movie theater.

Justin Bieber was only 15 when his platinum-selling debut "My World" was released. The singer from Ontario had placed second in a local singing contest two years earlier and began posting performances on YouTube, according to his official website. The videos caught the attention of a talent agent who helped Bieber land an audition with R&B singer Usher. Usher, along with Island/Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid, signed him to a recording contract.

A LOOK INSIDE VERSACE'S MIAMI BEACH HOME BEFORE ITS SOLD AT AUCTION

Snake-haired, golden Medusa heads still glint from the gates, the swimming pool and flower pots at 1116 Ocean Drive, vestiges of the glamour fashion designer Gianni Versace brought to South Beach before his death on his own front steps.

Though the Versace family hasn't owned the ocean-front mansion since 2000, auctioneers hope the Italian designer's legacy will attract bidders to the Miami Beach property when it goes up for auction on September 17.

The minimum bid is set for 25 (m) million US dollars.

To even see the property, potential buyers must sign a confidentiality agreement and prove they have the money to close a deal.

Here's what comes with the house: a swimming pool inlaid with 24-karat gold tiles, gold-plated bathroom fixtures, high walls that block the sounds on busy Ocean Drive, panoramic views of the ocean from a rooftop observatory and mosaic flooring and frescos and murals custom-made for Versace himself.

Each room has been uniquely furnished by the current owner, and the furniture comes with the sale, including beds so large they need custom-made sheets.

Half a dozen buyers have expressed interest since the auction was announced last week, said Lamar Fisher, president and CEO of Fisher Auction Company.

"They range from very, very high-profile individuals and celebrities to international buyers from the Russian market to the South American market," Fisher said.

Their new neighbors will include thousands of tourists regularly streaming past the corner property.

Versace and an entourage of celebrity friends that included Madonna, Cher and Elton John helped revive South Beach in the 1990s from a retirement community to the pulsating, almost-anything-goes party hub that attracts tourists today.

The designer bought a neglected three-story, Mediterranean-style home, originally built in 1930 by Standard Oil heir Alden Freeman, and a dilapidated hotel next door in 1992 and spent 33 (m) million US dollars on renovations.

The 23,000-square-foot mansion now has 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a 54-foot-long mosaic pool lined with 24-karat gold tiles and an open-air courtyard.

Versace was fatally shot on the mansion's stone front steps in 1997 by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who later shot himself as a police search closed in on him.

JUDGE TRIES TO BROKER DEAL

A judge tried to broker an agreement on Friday among the three people fighting over Anna Nicole Smith's remains, about how and when to embalm the former Playboy Playmate's body.

Even if they settle that, as expected, lengthy legal fights loomed over where she will be buried and who will get custody of her infant daughter.

The hearing over Smith's final resting place was in its third day.

"I want every loose end tied up," Broward County Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin said. "I want peace and tranquillity. Not only for the dead, but for the living, for the living that want to visit her site."

Friday's proceedings moved out of Seidlin's chambers and into a courtroom to accommodate the horde of media and attorneys in attendance.

On Thursday, Seidlin had ordered that additional DNA be taken from Smith's body, saying he wanted to make sure her body would not have to be exhumed.

Seidlin ordered Smith's longtime companion, Howard K. Stern, to appear in court on Tuesday.

"He'll be here Tuesday morning 9:30 (a.m) we start. We wait for no-one," the Judge said.

Stern, no relation to the radio host with a similar name, claims he was the executor of Anna Nicole Smith's will and wants her buried next to her son in the Bahamas.

According to document released on Friday Anna Nicole Smith said in a 2001 will that all property of her estate should be given to Stern to hold in trust for her son, Daniel.

However Daniel, the product of a short-lived marriage, died at the age of 20 in September, just three days after Smith's daughter was born.

The will quoted Smith as "intentionally" omitting to provide for her spouse and other heirs, including future spouses and children and other descendants now living and those hereafter born or adopted.

Stern and two other men claim to have fathered Smith's daughter, Dannielynn.

The will did not say where Smith wanted to be buried, but named Stern as her executor.

The attorney for Smith's estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, said the will was not filed in any court, so it was not valid.

Arthur, wants her daughter buried in Smith's home state of Texas.

Photographer Larry Birkhead hopes DNA taken from Smith will help prove he fathered the former centerfold's five-month-old daughter, Dannielynn.

Dannielynn, could inherit millions from the starlet's will.

Smith, died aged 39 on February 8 after collapsing at a Florida hotel.

On Wednesday, Seidlin declared Smith's corpse would stay refrigerated in the medical examiner's office until he said otherwise.

In California, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, the husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, filed legal documents on Thursday seeking a DNA test to determine if he fathered the Dannielynn.

Von Anhalt, who says he is 59, has said he and Smith had a decade-long affair.

Smith was the widow of Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, whom she married in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26.

She had been fighting his family for a decade, over part of the 910 million UK pounds (1,775 (m) million US dollars) fortune left to her, following his death in 1995.

US Athletes were allegedly involved as customers in an illicit steroid distribution network that led authorities to raid two Orlando pharmacies and arrest four company officials, a New York prosecutor said.

David Soares, an Albany County District Attorney refused to identify any steroid recipients, saying prosecutors were focused on producers and distributors.

Soares was in Florida on Tuesday for raids conducted by federal and state agents at two Signature Pharmacy stores.

Arrested on Tuesday were Stanley and Naomi Loomis, who own the Signature Pharmacy, Stanley's brother Michael Loomis and Kirk Calvert, Signature's marketing director.

Soares' office alleged that Signature was as a "producer" of the illegally distributed drugs.

Prosecutors were to ask at a hearing on Thursday that the four be extradited to New York.

According to the arrest warrants, all four were indicted on charges of enterprise corruption, criminal sale of a controlled substance, criminal diversion of prescription medications and insurance fraud.

Soares said his investigation began after an Albany doctor was arrested for allegedly trafficking in narcotics online.

The Times Union of Albany, New York said investigators found evidence that testosterone and other performance-enhancing drugs may have been fraudulently prescribed over the Internet to current and athletes, high school coaches, and a former Mr Olympia champion.

"I understand that the involvement of athletes and celebrities makes this a sexy story but I assure you that we are not concerned at this point with the celebrity factor nor do we want to be distracted by that," Soares said on Tuesday.

The paper said a New York investigator flew to Pittsburgh last month to interview Pittsburgh Steelers physician Richard Rydze about why he allegedly used a personal credit card to purchase around 150-thousand US dollars in testosterone and human growth hormone in 2006.

Rydze told the investigator the drugs were for his private patients, the paper said, citing an unidentified person briefed on the interview.

There are no allegations Rydze violated any laws.

Also arrested as a result of the New York investigation were three people Soares' office described as "distributors" from a Sugar Land, Texas, company called Cellular Nucleonic Advantage.

Before the investigation is complete, Soares' office said, up to 24 people could face charges, including six doctors and three pharmacists.

The Loomis' pharmacy contains a small retail store that sells bodybuilding supplements, a drug laboratory and executive offices.

Soares' office alleges that Signature filled prescriptions, in some cases from unlicensed doctors, knowing they had not met patients.

The office said at least 250-thousand US dollars in illegal and controlled substances were sold directly into Albany County, and New York State sales exceeded ten (m) million US dollars.

The Broward County Medical Examiner said on Tuesday that from their side US actress Anna Nicole Smith's body was ready for release.

But before the body can be claimed, the next of kin needs to be legally established.

"Both sides know, as a result of what we told them, that they have to go to court and get an order designating the proper legal next of kin. Whatever the court asks us to do we would obviously comply. From our end the body is ready for release,'' Doctor Joshua Perper told AP Television.

Perper said that when a body is kept too long after death, "even if the body is in the refrigerator, if the period of time is excessive then there are going to be deterioration changes in the body what we call post-mortem changes which would make embalming more difficult and the appearance of the body less appealing."

He said he conducted extra tests on the body because of the high celebrity profile involved in this case.

MINDY MCCREADY'S FUNERAL HELD IN HER HOMETOWN OF FORT MYERS, FLORIDA

As her music played in the background, country music star Mindy McCready was remembered Tuesday (26 Feb.) by friends and family as a fun and talented singer who also "wanted to be healed" from her past.

About 200 friends and family gathered for McCready's funeral in her Florida hometown as images were shown on a large screen behind the altar and her portrait stood nearby.

"Her spirit found healing on the other side. Her famous last words were 'I love you. Miss you. Mean it.' And I will always love her, miss her and I mean it," said McCready's mother, Gayle Inge, at the Crossroads Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Fla.

McCready, whose real name was Malinda Gayle McCready, committed suicide Feb. 17 at her home in Arkansas, days after leaving a court-ordered substance abuse treatment program. The 37-year-old mother of two died from a single gunshot to the head about a month after her longtime boyfriend David Wilson's death, also thought to be suicide, in the same place.

Inge, McCready's mother, acknowledged that her daughter had faced many battles but now: "Her spirit found healing on the other side."

McCready's personal problems started in 2004 and included a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons. She was briefly hospitalized in 2010 after police responded to an overdose call to a home her mother owned in North Fort Myers, Fla., and she later appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew," where she declared herself clean from drugs.

McCready's family declined to address any custody issue at the funeral.

"She wanted them to know that nothing, not even death, could separate her from them," Gayle Inge said of McCready's two sons, Zander Ryan and Zayne Christopher McCready grew up in Fort Myers, where she took private vocal lessons and later sang in karaoke bars.

Family friend Julie Ende-Killion remembers the day when McCready won her first award for "Ten Thousand Angels."

"And I remember her coming out of the trailer," she recalled. "I think she was in Kenny Chesney's trailer because she didn't even have her own dressing room at that time."

McCready arrived in Nasvhille in 1994 and hit the top of the country charts before her personal problems sidetracked her career.

In 1996, her "Guys Do It All the Time" hit No. 1. Her other hits included "Ten Thousand Angels," which her stepfather sang during the funeral.

PHOTOGRAPHER WANTS BIG DAMAGES IN BIEBER LAWSUIT

A celebrity photographer sought to boost the potential damages he could win from Justin Bieber in a lawsuit that accuses the singer and a bodyguard of battery in a confrontation outside a recording studio.

The photographer's attorney, Mark DiCowden, said at a Tuesday (1 MAY 2014) hearing that he has documented at least 11 similar alleged assaults against photographers over two years involving Bieber and his security personnel. DiCowden said a punitive damage award for Jeffrey Binion could deter future assaults against celebrity photographers, known as "paparazzi."

"It's not a financial fishing expedition," DiCowden said in asking Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel to allow him to pursue unspecified punitive damages. "It is well known around the world that Justin Bieber does not like to be photographed in public."

Zabel did not immediately rule. Bieber attorney Jared Lopez said there is no evidence that Binion was physically harmed in the alleged attack in June - meaning compensatory damages for the photographer might be minimal - and no proof that Bieber himself told bodyguard Hugo Hesny to go after Binion.

"I don't tell security how to do their job," Bieber said in a March deposition in the case, according to Lopez.

Outside the courtroom, Bieber attorney Roy Black called the lawsuit "frivolous" and intended mainly to generate publicity. DiCowden denied that.

Hesny is facing a misdemeanor battery charge in the Binion case, and he was also recently charged in another photographer confrontation in Atlanta. Bieber is not facing criminal charges in either case. Other incidents involving Bieber bodyguards have occurred in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Argentina and England, according to court papers.

DiCowden also wants Zabel to order Bieber to return to Miami for another deposition to answer questions about his on-again, off-again girlfriend, singer and actress Selena Gomez. DiCowden claims he was improperly prevented from asking those questions during the March deposition and that they are important to the Florida case because she may have been present during previous photographer attacks.

Zabel is holding a hearing in June on that request.

Separately, Bieber has pleaded not guilty to DUI, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license after a Jan. 23 arrest in Miami Beach. A May 5 trial date is set in that case.

Richard Gere arrived in Venice yesterday to promote his latest movie "The Hunting Party," starring Richard Gere, Terrence Howard and Diane Kruger.

The film is based on a true story about a group of Western war-reporters who met in Sarajevo in 2001 and unsuccessfully decide to try and catch accused war criminal and fugitive Radovan Karad�ic.

Gere plays Simon, TV news reporter who's worked in the most dangerous war zones in the world.

One day, while working in Bosnia during the conflict there, he cracks due to the pressure of working in the zone during a live broadcast.

Five years later, his colleague Duck played by Terrence Howard returns to cover the fifth anniversary of the end of the war and comes across Simon, who claims to have a world exclusive on the whereabouts of a notorious war criminal wanted for ethnic cleansing in Bosnia.

Together they embark on a dangerous journey into hostile territory to try and unearth "The Fox."

Howard likened his childhood years growing up in Cleveland and LA to a war zone and told the AP he had utmost respect for journalists that put their lives at risk to bring people the news, but would not do so himself.

The drawn-out court battle over what will happen to the body of US celebrity Anna Nicole Smith continued in a Florida courtroom on Wednesday.

For the second day in a row, Smith's companion, Howard K. Stern, and her estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, appeared before circuit judge Larry Seidlin in Fort Lauderdale, each hoping to convince him that they should be responsible for the burial of the former Playboy model's remains.

The legal manoeuvring has been going on for about a week, and it was almost two weeks since Smith died on 8 February, 2007.

Stern wants her to be buried next to her son Daniel in the Bahamas, where he died last year from apparent drug-related causes.

But Arthur told the court that Smith had told her when she was 25 that she wanted to be buried in Texas.

Arthur, back on the stand on Wednesday, testified that drugs soured her relationship with her daughter.

Arthur said the two talked only every few months and that Smith often called her in the middle of the night sounding drugged.

She also disputed Stern's testimony that Smith always spoke about death.

"She was too full of life, she loved life. She loved to be in the public, she loved to be seen," she said.

Smith's estranged mother said she last saw her daughter more than ten years ago, in 1996, and blamed Stern, saying, "when he came in, all of the family was shut out."

Arthur also disputed Stern's testimony on Tuesday that Smith was always obsessed with her own death and expected to die young, just like her hero, Marilyn Monroe.

Arthur testified that more than a decade ago, when Smith was in her twenties, she informed her mother that "she wanted to be buried in Texas," in the family burial plots where her grandparents are buried.

In perhaps the most emotional exchange in the days of hearings thus far, Arthur implied that Howard K. Stern was responsible for the deaths of both Anna Nicole and Daniel.

She said she tried to warn her daughter that "she was going to be next," and said she urged her to "be careful."

Without written proof of Smith's wishes, Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin was forced to hear testimony from those who claim to know what Anna Nicole wanted after her death and try to come to a solution.

Seidlin indicated Wednesday the best result would be a compromise - and soon - since the medical examiner again warned Smith's body was decomposing more quickly than expected and a public viewing could be in danger.

Stern had earlier testified Smith never recovered from her son's death. He said a grief-stricken Smith threw herself over his body as he lay in a coffin in the Bahamas, wailing, "Daniel has to be buried, I want to buried with him."

Judge Seidlin was expected to make a ruling by Friday.

Also at issue in court is the paternity of Smith's 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn.

Stern is listed as the father on the birth certificate, but a photographer who once dated Smith, former boyfriend Larry Birkhead, says the girl is his daughter.

Smith was the widow of Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II.

The two married in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26. She had been fighting his family over his estimated 500 million US dollar fortune since his death in 1995.

The cause of her death is under investigation.

WESLEY SNIPES INDICTED ON EIGHT COUNTS OF TAX FRAUD

US actor Wesley Snipes was indicted on Tuesday on eight counts of tax fraud, accused of trying to cheat the government out of nearly 12 (m) million US dollars (9.58 million euros) in false refund claims and not filing returns for six years.

Prosecutors said Snipes fraudulently claimed refunds totalling nearly 12 (m) million US dollars (9.58 million euros) in 1996 and 1997 on income taxes already paid.

The star of the "Blade" trilogy and other films including "Jungle Fever" and "White Men Can't Jump" was also charged with failure to file returns from 1999 through 2004.

According to the indictment, Snipes had his taxes prepared by accountants with a history of filing false returns to reap payments for their clients.

The firm, American Rights Litigators, would receive 20 percent of refunds from clients, according to the indictment.

US Attorney Paul Perez said at a news conference in Tampa, Florida, that he didn't know the Hollywood star's whereabouts but was hoping he would self-surrender soon.

"We've spoken to his former attorneys over the weekend. We presume that he knows and of course after this press conference he'll definitely know," Perez told reporters

If convicted of all the charges, Snipes could face 16 years in prison - five years each on two conspiracy counts and one year each on six counts of failure to file income tax returns.

Snipes, 44, who had a home in Windermere near Orlando, has not been arrested because authorities don't know where he is, Perez said.

Snipes' manager and attorney did not return phone messages from The Associated Press.

"We've spoken to his former attorneys over the weekend," Perez said. "We presume that he knows, and of course after this press conference he will definitely know."

The indictment said Snipes conspired with American Rights Litigators' founder Eddie Ray Kahn and tax preparer Douglas Rosile to file false refund claims based on a bogus argument that only income from foreign sources was subject to taxation.

That included a claim for a 7.3 (m) million US dollars (5.83 million euros) refund for 1997, in which an amended tax return reported Snipes' adjusted income as zero.

The Justice Department sued Rosile in 2002 for allegedly filing bogus tax refund claims totalling more than 36 (m) million US dollars (28.74 million euros) on behalf of clients in 32 states.

The suit is still pending.

Snipes was not named as a defendant in that case, but the lawsuit said the preparer's largest claim was an amended income tax return filed on behalf of the actor and dated April 14, 2001.

Rosile is in custody in Ocala, Perez said, and the third defendant named in the indictment, Kahn, is believed to be out of the country.

An attorney representing Rosile said Tuesday that he had just received the indictment and could not yet comment on the case.

Vanilla Ice, an American rapper who rose to fame with the hit "Ice Ice Baby",was released on Wednesday from custody in Florida after being arrested and charged with breaking into and stealing from an abandoned home.

Speaking after he was freed, the artist said it was "a misunderstanding".

Police in Lantana say the recording artist and home-improvement-show host had been renovating a home next to the on that was burgled.

They also said some items taken from the abandoned house were found at his property.

Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, also hosts DIY Network's "The Vanilla Ice Project."

The 47-year-old was charged earlier on Wednesday with burglary of a residence and grand theft and taken into custody.

He was released from the Palm Beach County jail on a 6,000 US dollar bond.

Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot in the leg early on Sunday during a party in Miami Beach hosted by Grammy-winning hip hop artist Kanye West, police said.

Knight, 40, was hospitalised in good condition, police said.

He was shot during a celebrity-studded party at the Shore Club, one of the many celebrations in Miami Beach ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards scheduled for Sunday night, Miami Beach police officials said.

A guest at the club said a shot in the party''s VIP section rang out shortly before 0100 local time (0500 GMT).

People attending the party began screaming and running for the doors, she said.

Celebrities who attended included West, actress Jessica Alba and comedian Eddie Murphy, but it was unclear whether they were still there when the shooting took place.

Knight co-founded the pioneering rap label Death Row Records and hit the charts in the 1990s with West Coast stars including Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

Knight was convicted in 1992 of assault and weapons violations and was placed on probation.

In 1996, he was jailed for five years for violating probation after he and several associates, including Shakur, were recorded on videotape beating a gang rival at a Las Vegas hotel.

Shakur was later shot to death in Las Vegas.

Relatives of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G. have also accused Knight of involvement in B.I.G.''s death, though police have never named Knight as a

suspect.

Knight continues to operate his label, now called Tha Row.

Video of Canadian pop star Justin Bieber walking unsteadily during a sobriety test at a police station after his January arrest was released on Wednesday.

Only a few moments depict Bieber in the roughly 10 hours of video released by Miami-Dade County prosecutors following public records requests from The Associated Press and other news organisations.

The videos were recorded at the Miami Beach Police Department shortly after Bieber and R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff were arrested during what officers said was an illegal street drag race in exotic sports cars.

In one clip, Bieber wavers as he tries to walk carefully and slowly heel to toe.

He stumbles slightly as he turns and appears to have his arms out for balance.

In a second try he stumbles again, even reaching out to a wall for support, and has an animated face-to-face conversation with a police officer in which both point fingers at each other.

There are only brief glimpses of the pop singer's face and no close-ups in the medium-quality video, which also included no time codes to determine how long he underwent the sobriety tests.

Sharieff is also depicted in some segments, sitting quietly in a chair and watching Bieber undergo the sobriety test.

At one point the two appear to be talking and Sharieff raises a clenched fist.

Several clips were withheld at the request of Bieber's attorneys, including four segments depicting Bieber urinating into a cup for a drug test.

A Miami-Dade county judge will review those clips in private and plans another hearing next week on whether they will be released.

Bieber has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence, resisting arrest and driving with an invalid license.

Breath tests showed that his blood-alcohol content was below the 0.02 level considered intoxicated for underage drivers, but the urine test found the presence of marijuana and the antidepressant Xanax.

Police reports described Bieber after his arrest as "excited, talkative, profanity, cooperative, insulting, and cocky" and noted that he had a pronounced odour of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot eyes and a flushed face.

Regarding the marijuana, one officer said he noticed a strong smell of the drug while Bieber was sitting in the back of a police car.

The officer asked Bieber about it.

"Yeah, we were smoking all night at the studio," the report quotes Bieber as replying.

BATTLE OVER ANNA NICOLE SMITH BODY CONTINUES

The drawn-out court battle over what will happen to the body of US celebrity Anna Nicole Smith continued in a Florida courtroom on Wednesday (February 21.)

For the second day in a row, Smith's companion, Howard K. Stern, and her estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, appeared before circuit judge Larry Seidlin in Fort Lauderdale, each hoping to convince him that they should be responsible for the burial of the former Playboy model's remains.

The legal manoeuvring has been going on for about a week, and it was almost two weeks since Smith died on 8 February, 2007.

Stern wants her to be buried next to her son Daniel in the Bahamas, where he died last year from apparent drug-related causes.

But Arthur wants the pair to be buried in Smith's native Texas, her lawyer said.

Arthur, back on the stand on Wednesday, testified that drugs soured her relationship with her daughter.

Arthur said the two talked only every few months and that Smith often called her in the middle of the night sounding drugged.

She also disputed Stern's testimony that Smith always spoke about death.

"She was too full of life, she loved life. She loved to be in the public, she loved to be seen," she said.

Seidlin asked her: "If you could have done one thing differently with your daughter, what would you have done?"

Arthur replied: "When I knew that she was really deep into drugs, I would have went and kidnapped her. I would have done everything I could possibly do..."

Without written proof of Smith's own wishes, Judge Larry Seidlin heard testimony from those who claim to know what she wanted. He said he would rule by Friday.

Stern had earlier testified Smith never recovered from her son's death. He said a grief-stricken Smith threw herself over his body as he lay in a coffin in the Bahamas, wailing, "Daniel has to be buried, I want to buried with him."

Also at issue in court is the paternity of Smith's 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn.

Stern is listed as the father on the birth certificate, photographer and ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead and Frederic von Anhalt, the husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, have also filed separate paternity challenges.

Smith was the widow of Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II.

The two married in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26. She had been fighting his family over his estimated 500 million US dollar fortune since his death in 1995.

The cause of her death is under investigation.

Former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died from an accidental drug overdose, authorities in the US announced on Monday.

Seminole Police Department Chief Charlie Tiger said the autopsy finding effectively closed the case on Smith's sudden death in February.

He told a news conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, no evidence of illegal drugs had been found and there was nothing to indicate foul play.

"We are convinced based on an extensive review of the evidence that this case is an accidental overdose with no other criminal elements present," Tiger said.

The case was, he said, now ''effectively closed.''

Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper said Smith died of "combined drug intoxication" with the sleeping medication chloral hydrate as the major factor. She was taking a lengthy list of other medications, including methadone for pain, he said.

Chloral hydrate is a sedative used to treat insomnia and alcohol withdrawal, relieve anxiety and ease post-surgery pain. Perper said Smith had been on several antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs prior to her death.

Smith, 39, was found unresponsive on 8 February in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.

The weeks after her death were filled with public courtroom drama and private whispers about what might have killed her.

Smith had arrived at the Hard Rock on 5 February and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht that her companion Howard K. Stern was arranging to buy. She was seldom seen outside her room during her stay and was said to be suffering from flu before she died.

Because her death was so sudden, and because her 20-year-old son Daniel died under suspicious circumstances five months earlier, there has been speculation about possible criminal activity surrounding the deaths.

The Seminole Police Department investigated the case because the casino is on tribal land.

An inquest into Daniel's death is scheduled to start on Tuesday in the Bahamas, where he died.

A Florida judge has denied Gawker's motion for a new trial in the Hulk Hogan sex-video case and won't reduce a $140 million jury verdict.

Judge Pamela Campbell issued the ruling Wednesday.

Gawker and Hogan faced off again in the St. Petersburg courtroom. It's the latest chapter in a years long legal fight.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, won the $140 million verdict against Gawker in March.

Hogan sued Gawker after it posted a video of him having sex with his then-best friend's wife. The three-week trial was a lurid inside look at the business of celebrity gossip and a debate over newsworthiness versus celebrity privacy.

Earlier this month, Hogan sued Gawker again, saying the gossip website leaked sealed court documents with a transcript that quoted him making racist remarks.

A judge has set pop singer Justin Bieber's bail at 2,500 US dollars on charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and driving with an expired driver's licence.

Bieber was arrested earlier on Thursday after police said he was speeding down a residential street in Miami Beach in a yellow Lamborghini.

Officers say he had an expired licence and was initially not cooperative when he was pulled over.

Bieber, along with R&B singer, Khalil, known in court documents as Khalil Amir Sharieff, appeared before Judge Joseph Farina Thursday afternoon for a bond hearing.

The pair were wearing bright red jail fatigues and appeared in court via a video link from jail.

They remained silent while defence attorney Roy Black negotiated bond.

Khalil was also charged with DUI (driving under the influence) and was driving a Ferrari at the time of arrest, according to police.

His bond was set at 1,000 US dollars.

Authorities say Bieber was arrested after police saw him and Khalil racing two luxury vehicles down the street at 4:09 a.m. (0909 GMT), with two other vehicles apparently being used to block off the area.

Police say Bieber later admitted that he had been drinking, smoking marijuana and taking prescription medication.

He was clocked at 55 to 60 mph (88 to 96 kph) in a 30 mph (48kph) zone, according to police.
