STAR SNAPS SNAPPED UP

French actress Juliette Binoche hosted an auction in Paris of photo snaps taken by top celebrities, to help raise money to defend press freedom.

More than 90 showbiz stars, included Anthony Hopkins, Robert Altman, Jodie Foster, Michael J. Fox, Constantin Costa-Gavras and Karl Lagerfeld, were given disposable cameras with which they were asked to record glimpses into their every day lives.

The profits will help the charity Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) which campaigns for press freedom worldwide.

The bidding price for the cameras started at 20 Euros ($19) each, so that as many people as possible may participate. After the auction, buyers will be free to decide whether to have their photographs developed, so that they can discover the 27 surprise photos inside, or to keep their camera intact, autographed by the celebrity-photographer.

The auction record was for Binoche's camera, selling for 4500 Euros ($4230).

Meanwhile, French footballer star Zinedine Zidane offered for auction the shirt he wore for the France-Scotland match on 27 March 2002. It sold for 3800 Euros ($3572).

Funds raised from the auction of these cameras will enable Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) to carry on its efforts on behalf of freedom of the press and especially help journalists who are in prison around the globe.

The Star Photos auction was held at the Paris Inter Continental Hotel on Wednesday June 12th.

Oscar Pistorius goes on trial for murder on Monday and the proceedings are expected to be witnessed by an audience of (m) millions.

In a landmark ruling, a South African judge has agreed parts of the trial can be broadcast live on television by three remote-controlled cameras in court, but testimony given by Pistorius can not be shown.

Judge Dunstan Mlambo, who made the decision to allow broadcasting, said he had weighed up arguments for a fair trial from the Pistorius camp with principles of open justice and freedom of expression.

Advocates for freedom of speech and more transparency in South African public life hope the decision to allow cameras into the Pistorius trail will lead to more high profile cases being covered live.

The ruling followed a petition by local broadcaster 'Multi Choice', a digital TV and radio service, who have added what they describe as a 'pop up channel' to their system.

Channel 199 will be dedicated to the Pistorius trial and bring viewers not only the live pictures from inside the court, but a steady stream of analysis and comment from legal experts.

The pop-up channel is being produced by George Mazarakis, a popular television personality who is executive producer of the highly rated 'Carte Blanche', a show which pioneered investigative journalism in South Africa when it first aired in 1988.

Mazarakis has been associated with the show since its launch.

The pop-up channel will carry advertising which the producers say is necessary to help offset the high costs involved.

A panel of executives from Multi Choice briefed the media about Channel 199 last Friday.

They were keen to point out that the content will be serious and responsible - "not just tabloid" - but acknowledge they have a gripping story to tell.

"It is all too real, it is all too tragic," says Mazarakis.

The area outside the North Gauteng High Court has become a campsite for international television channels who have descended on Pretoria to beam their own reports and analysis of the Pistorius trial around the world.

On Sunday technicians were busy setting up satellite dishes and camera positions.

Hundreds of reporters have applied for a limited number of seats in a separate room in the court complex where the proceedings will be relayed via closed circuit television.

South Africa's criminal justice system and gun culture will be under a global spotlight during the Pistorius trial, which has some parallels with the 1990s OJ Simpson case in the United States because of the celebrity factor, the sensational allegations and the fascination of people around the world.

Parts of the trial will be broadcast live on television, adding to the scrutiny.

Simpson's trial for the murder of his ex-wife and a man was televised in its entirety.

But in one glaring difference, Pistorius acknowledges he killed the victim.

The Olympian said he thought Reeva Steenkamp was a night-time intruder in his home in the early hours of 14 February last year; the prosecution maintains he intentionally shot her several times in the bathroom after an argument.

Criminal law experts believe that if the prosecution fails to prove premeditated murder, firing several shots through a closed door could bring a conviction for the lesser charge of culpable homicide, a South African equivalent of manslaughter covering unintentional deaths through negligence.

Mlambo had shown "an awareness of the competing considerations at play," said Justice Edwin Cameron of South Africa's Constitutional Court.

He declined to comment directly on the ruling, but said he favoured cameras in appellate courts.

South Africa abolished the jury system in 1969 following arguments that whites-only juries during apartheid would be unlikely to deliver fair verdicts involving, for example, a white perpetrator and a black victim.

HEATHER MILLS TESTIFIES ABOUT PHONE HACKING

Heather Mills, the former model who was once married to Paul McCartney, testified forcefully on Thursday (9 FEB. 2012) that there was no doubt her phone had been hacked by a UK journalist.

Speaking before a judge-led inquiry into British media ethics, Mills said dozens of messages between her and the former Beatle were intercepted by a journalist working for British newspaper group Trinity Mirror.

She said the incident happened after a fight she and McCartney had had in January 2001, when McCartney, then her boyfriend, bombarded her with phone calls.

The messages left for Mills by McCartney are at the centre of the allegations against CNN star interviewer Piers Morgan, who is a former editor of the Daily Mirror tabloid.

She recalled that there were "about 25 messages" asking for forgiveness and that McCartney had even sang on one of the messages.

She said she found it strange that the messages were listed as having been listened to even before she had accessed them, but said she didn't realise what had happened until the journalist, unnamed for legal reasons, called her up and confronted her with details.

"I said: 'there's no way that you could know that unless you have been listening to my messages', and he laughed," she told the inquiry.

The lawyer assisting the inquiry was quick to point out that the journalist involved was not a Daily Mirror journalist or working under the supervision of Morgan at the time.

However in 2006, Morgan wrote that he had once been played an apologetic message left by McCartney for Mills, describing it in detail and noting that McCartney even sang 'We Can Work It Out' on the message.

Called before the U.K. inquiry last year, Morgan denied ordering anyone to hack a phone or writing stories based on hacked messages.

He acknowledged listening to Mill's voicemail message but stubbornly refused to say anything about how he had gotten it.

Morgan even left open the possibility that the voicemail had been played to him with Mills' approval, but Mills said Thursday that was impossible.

"Never," she said. "Never ever."

Mills married the popular McCartney in 2002 and had a daughter with him before they divorced in 2008.

She sought and got a substantial divorce settlement, becoming a tabloid hate figure after they separated.

She is a fierce critic of tabloid journalists in general and Morgan in particular.

Earlier the inquiry heard from the founder of photo agency 'Big Pictures', Australian Darryn Lyons.

Lyons, who wrote a book entitled "Mr Paparazzi: My Life as the World's Most Outrageous Celebrity Photographer," defended his industry's employees and the practice of confronting celebrities in the street.

"I don't agree that people should be hounded up and down the street all day in any shape or form, but I do agree that people, as a part of historical.. as a part of history, should be photographed in public places - absolutely and I'm adamant about it. We have free press and a free press should be able to work in public places," he said.

The Leveson inquiry was set up in the wake of Britain's tabloid phone-hacking scandal, which shocked the country with revelations that journalists at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World routinely eavesdropped on the private communications of those in the public eye.

Several journalists have been arrested, top media executives have resigned, and Murdoch closed the 168-year-old tabloid in July.

Protesters lying on railroad tracks blocked a train carrying a UK TV crew on Wednesday, as they attempted to make their way to Sri Lanka's former war zone in the north.

Channel 4's Callum Macrae, along with a team from the UK news programme Channel 4 News, were in Sri Lanka to cover the upcoming Commonwealth meeting.

They were blocked in the north-central city of Anuradhapura, and the train to the northern town of Vavuniya was unable to move for more than three hours.

The team eventually abandoned their train journey to allow other passengers to move on.

Macrae made a documentary showing soldiers executing naked Tamils and other gruesome footage from the 138-day final offensive in the country's 27-year civil war.

Sri Lanka dismissed the video as fake footage and false journalism.

However British Prime Minister David Cameron said at the weekend that Sri Lanka had "serious questions" to answer after watching the documentary.

Speaking in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Wednesday, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was "disturbed by the incident " that had taken place involving the British team of journalists.

He stated that, to him, "freedom of access to the media is very, very important."

Sri Lanka will host a Commonwealth summit this weekend with the global focus trained on the country's 27-year civil war and alleged atrocities committed by both rebels and soldiers who, despite a sustained international outcry, have been spared from investigations and prosecutions since the war ended in 2009.

The leaders of Canada and India are boycotting the summit for those reasons.

Others have had to justify their plans to attend by promising to bring Sri Lanka's government to task.

Queen Elizabeth II, who is 87, is not going, but her son, Prince Charles, is presiding over the meeting.

Sri Lanka denies any rights abuses were committed by its forces and it has balked at demands for an independent investigation.

The country's leaders also accuse journalists of fabricating allegations of atrocities, and stand staunchly by a clan-like government that has alarmed many democracies in the West.

Daily Show host Jon Stewart attended the premiere of his passion project, 'Rosewater' Monday (9 September 2014) at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Stewart made his directorial debut with the film that tells the story of Iran-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari. It based on his book that describes his five-month imprisonment in Iran in 2009 for alleged spying.

With Stewart, the Daily Show has become more than a "fake news" comedy show, but a barometer for what's happening around the world. "Rosewater" is a serious movie, and when asked what made him think he could actually pull it off, Stewart was quick to respond.

"Very little makes me believe I can pull this off. (laughs) Hopefully, I think it's an extension of a long career and getting to stretch out and do different things. But mostly it's about Maziar (Bahari) and the book that he wrote about it and how compelling that was," Stewart said.

Stewart struck up a friendship with Bahari.

"I think just becoming friendly with Maziar after he was released from prison. We used to just meet in New York and have breakfast. We would talk about the book and talk about our families and - when I read the book the level of emotion and complexity and everything that was in there. But also the humor that he was able to keep when he was in prison. It kind of struck me."

Stewart feels he's learned more about the obstacles that face journalists today.

"Journalism has expanded now with technology and bloggers and activists and everybody. Regimes in the east, in the west, in America are finding different levers of power to try and stifle it. So I thought this was a very appropriate and urgent story given what's happening to journalists. Not just the incredibly egregious examples that we see, but a more ubiquitous kind of -- being arrested, being harassed, being hassled and that was a lot of the basis of the story," Stewart said.

While the film depicts Bahari's ordeal, he feels it's not really about him, but the problem as a whole.

"It feels good because we are talking about subjects that are dear to me, we are talking about what journalists in Iran and other authoritarian regimes are going through every day. The story of the film is really not my story. It's the story of many of my colleagues, my friends in different parts of the world and being in Toronto, it provides us a platform to talk about that," Bahari said.

In the film, he's played by Gael Garcia Bernal.

"It is set in a specific place, in a specific context, but it is about a worldwide issue, which is the prosecution for, err, the prosecution against freedom of speech, against journalists all over the world, drawing a complicated question, which is solitary confinement is also torture," Bernal said.

'Rosewater' opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 7.

Hong Kong's first ever trade fair for film and TV kicked off Wednesday featuring more than 70 exhibitors.

The Hong Kong International Film Market, "Filmart" allows international and local distributors to showcase their productions to a variety of entertainment industry heavyweights.

But with merely 19-days remaining before China resumes sovereignty on the British colony, fears of censorship may cause concern in this year's debut exhibition.

Hong Kong's International Film Market opened Wednesday in the territory.

Local celebrities, such as action star Chow Yun-fatt also attended the opening ceremony.

Hong Kong is the world's second largest movie distributor behind the US, exporting more than 200 titles each year.

It is the third largest film producer in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood, India's equivalent of the American movie hub.

For Hong Kong's film industry, uncertainty concerning freedom of expression and freedom of art are what worries film producers.

Whether these liberties will remain without interference from the Central government once China takes over, is still questionable.

Many say Hong Kong's film market will have the same freedoms after the territory reverts to Chinese sovereignty on July 1st.

The Secretary for Broadcasting and Culture guarantees the government will keep minimum intervention while providing the maximum support after handover.

Others fear that tight government censorship will apply to the territory as it currently does in Mainland China.

Production is only allowed in official studios in China and all scripts must have the ministry's approval prior to public showing.

With talks on unification along the China and Taiwan straits, Taiwanese film makers are optimistic about Hong Kong's future.

They say the handover will actually bring the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan closer together.

The smiling 62-year-old, who wore all black throughout the three-week trial, added that he's been overwhelmed with support by fans.

The punitive damages come on top of $115 million the jury imposed Friday after two weeks of trial.

KATHY GRIFFIN WARNS HER NIGHTMARE CAN HAPPEN TO YOU

Kathy Griffin is ready to laugh with Americans about the time a controversial photograph got her in hot water with the feds - but she has a warning amid the jokes.

"I really do believe if it happened to me it can happen to you."

Griffin will embark on a North American tour this summer, a year after she was widely condemned for posing for a picture in which she gripped a bloodied rendering of Donald Trump's head.

Ten months on, she is unbowed.

"I'm the same girl I've always been _ just a hardworking, obnoxious, red-haired comedy girl. The whole time I've been consistent in just trying to make you laugh," she says. "Am I shocking sometimes? For sure. Do I go too far? I hope so. That's my job."

The "Suddenly Susan" and "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" star lost income, received death threats, was denounced by Trump, landed on an Interpol list and was afraid to leave her home. She says she was under investigation by the Department of Justice for two months.

"It shouldn't happen to an American citizen," she says, adding she worries that a 13-year-old who puts the same kind of photo on Twitter would trigger a federal investigation.

Griffin insists that while she understands people don't like the image, it is a form of free speech.

"If there's one amendment I'm familiar with it's the First Amendment. I know it back and forth and it's how I make my living."

The comedian's life changed radically last May, when the image came out.

"I really never thought that photo would take off at all. Like I've been doing 'shocking' things my whole career. Donald Trump has personally twice hired me to roast him," she says, calling the fallout "faux-outrage."

She admits to a few missteps, including a hastily put-together apology video followed by a press conference with attorney Lisa Bloom in which she called Trump a "bully" - merely worsened the still-spiraling disaster.

"My social media was so flooded that I really thought, 'OK, I am the most reviled person in the world right now," she recalls. "It's been a long time to sort of process that and figure out what's real and what isn't."

On the day, Griffin says many colleagues, including Anderson Cooper, turned away. But one celebrity reached out, despite not knowing her well  - Jim Carrey advised her to find the comedy in the situation.

"It was really meaningful to me that he called," she says. "Jim's advice was right on, which is, 'Lean into this topic and you'll find the comedy.' And luckily I found a lot of comedy while hibernating."

Some of her material is inspired by a phone conversation with her mom.

"My mother calls me, she was a little tipsy and she says, 'I'm watching Fox News with the sound off and they said that you joined ISIS, Kathleen. Now, of all the clubs you could have joined, why the hell did you join that one?'," Griffin recounts.

"I don't think they're recruiting 57-year-old Irish-American comedians," Griffin cracks. "I don't think I would do very well in the training camps. I've seen those videos."

Unable to tour in the United States, Griffin has been overseas, performing in 23 cities in 15 countries. This summer she plans to tour in Mexico, Canada and the United States, including stops in San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Chicago and a sold-out gig at Carnegie Hall in New York.

"I'm trying to sort of get people to forgive me and get people to come back to me or give me a chance. And it's interesting. It's really like I'm starting all over again."

They are among about a half-dozen murals painted around New York City and Jersey City, New Jersey, to draw attention to journalist Maziar Bahari's campaign for press freedom and educational access in Iran, where he spent 118 days in a jail after an appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." His story was told in Stewart's film "Rosewater."

Bahari hopes the art will attract the attention of diplomats attending the U.N. General Assembly and spark a conversation about human rights. He has founded a nonprofit group, Not A Crime, to focus on journalism and education for Iran's largest religious minority, the Baha'i.

Cases like those of Bahari and Jason Rezaian – a Washington Post reporter held in Evin prison for over a year on espionage charges _ have spotlighted the issue, and Bahari hopes, and the mural project will bring more awareness for the cause, and also of the Baha'i, a minority religious group in Iran denied access to higher education _ the faith is seen there as violating Islam.

For the New York project, Bahari teamed up with an online art gallery, Street Art Anarchy, which organized the artists.

They are among about a half-dozen murals painted around New York City and Jersey City, New Jersey, to draw attention to journalist Maziar Bahari's campaign for press freedom and educational access in Iran, where he spent 118 days in a jail after an appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." His story was told in Stewart's film "Rosewater."

Bahari hopes the art will attract the attention of diplomats attending the U.N. General Assembly and spark a conversation about human rights. He has founded a nonprofit group, Not A Crime, to focus on journalism and education for Iran's largest religious minority, the Baha'i.

Hundreds of supporters of Julian Assange marched through London on Saturday to pressure the U.K. government into refusing to extradite the WikiLeaks founder to the United States to face spying charges.

Famous Britons, including Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood joined the crowd protesting the U.S. espionage charges against the founder of the secret-spilling website.

An extradition hearing for Assange is due to begin in a London court on Monday.

WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson told a rally outside Parliament that the prosecution of Assange "represented an attack on journalism in general."

U.S. prosecutors have charged the 48-year-old Australian computer expert with espionage over WikiLeaks' publication of hundreds of thousands of confidential government documents.

If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to 175 years in prison.

American authorities say Assange conspired with U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to hack into a Pentagon computer and release secret diplomatic cables and military files on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange argues he acted as a journalist and is therefore entitled to First Amendment protection

He also maintains the documents exposed wrongdoing and protected many people.

Civil liberties groups and journalism organizations, including Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders, have urged the U.S. to drop the charges, saying they set a chilling precedent for freedom of the press.

DIANA CRASH PICTURES CAUSE GRIEF AND ANGER

The UK's Princes William and Harry on Friday revealed their deep sadness today following the publication of a photo of their mother Diana, Princess of Wales taken moments after the car crash which killed her.

The Royal princes issued a statement strongly criticising the decision to use the image in an Italian magazine.

They said they were "deeply saddened that such a low has been reached" and added that they would have been failing in their duty to her now if they did not make moves to protect her as she once did for them.

The decision to publish the photo set off anger across Britain with tabloid newspapers leading the protests against the image.

The black-and-white photo in Milan-based Chi magazine showed the princess receiving oxygen in the wreckage of the car crash that killed her on August 31, 1997.

The picture was excerpted from "Lady Diana: The Criminal Investigation," a new book by French author Jean-Michel Caradec'h.

"Shame on you," chided The Sun, a British tabloid.

The Daily Express called the image "grotesque" and swore not to reprint it.

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund said the photos were in poor taste.

The feeling was echoed by tourists in Rome.

"I think it's horrible, awful. They should just leave her be now. She has been dead for ten years, hasn't she?" said one lady visiting Rome.

UK tourists Mark and Laura agreed, saying," She's died, it's not going to help anybody at all."

However a Canadian tourist felt differently saying, "It's good to have a free press and she was a public figure. I think the people that think it's disgusting, they shouldn't buy the magazine."

Entrepreneur Mohamed al Fayed, whose son Dodi also died in the crash, called the publication "vile."

The magazine's editor Umberto Brindani, defended his action, saying that the photograph was "touching" and "tender," but not offensive.

The Princess of Wales died in a car accident in Paris on 31 August 1997.

Diana, 36, her companion Dodi Fayed, 42, and their driver, Henri Paul, were killed when the car crashed into a pillar in an underpass.

TINA FEY SAYS ATTACK IS REMINDER OF FREE SPEECH

Comic Tina Fey says Wednesday's (7 JAN. 2015) attack on a French newspaper and the Sony hacking surrounding the movie "The Interview" is a reminder of the importance of free speech.

Fey said: "Even if it's just dumb jokes in 'The Interview,' we have the right to make them."

The former "30 Rock" and "Saturday Night Live" star had been asked by reporters at a television conference to comment on the attack, where masked gunmen killed 12 people at a French satirical newspaper.

She said it was a reminder of the importance of free speech. "You cannot back down," she said.

Leading Moroccan human rights activists warned Thursday of an assault on freedom of expression in the country following the arrest over recent months of 15 journalists, bloggers, rappers and social media users.

Supporters of the detainees organised a protest in front of the Parliament in Rabat to demand their release.

The protest followed the publication of a report by the National Solidarity Committee, which sought to chronicle how authorities across the North African country increasingly clamped down on dissent during 2019, particularly on social media, which is widely considered to be the last remaining forum for Moroccans to speak freely.

The 15 are either facing charges, are on trial or have been convicted for crimes varying from insulting the king or institutions, to posting the lyrics of a popular rap song called Long Live the People, whose singer is spending one year in prison.

The report said that in December alone, Moroccan courts convicted six people, including a high-school student.

They were sentenced from six months to four years in prison for charges such as criticising living conditions in Morocco on Facebook.

Most recently, 19-year-old Hamza Asbaar from Southern Laayoune was sentenced to four years in prison for publishing a rap song deemed “offensive to sanctities.”

Verdicts on other cases are expected in the next few months.

The number of arrests related to free speech have more than doubled in the last two decades, said journalist and activist Omar Radi.

Radi is facing a trial himself over a tweet he published that defended anti-government protesters.

HARRISON FORD HONORS JOAN DIDION AT THE 23RD ANNUAL LITERARY AWARDS

Harrison Ford and Oliver Stone lent their star power to Monday's (14 OCT. 2013) 23rd annual Literary Awards, where the Hollywood heavyweights honored achievements in writing.

Before the ceremony, Ford refused to answer questions about his rumored involvement in the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII," but was pleased to chat about presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to his friend, celebrated author Joan Didion.

"I've known Joan for over 40 years. I did the math today. (laughs) I met her when they first came to Hollywood. And they had a big house on Franklin Avenue, she and her husband John Gregory Dunne, little baby Quintana. I was a young, struggling actor and they were very supportive and they were very kind to me," he said.

The 78-year-old novelist, essayist and playwright was not able to make the awards ceremony.

Director Oliver Stone presented the First Amendment Award to journalist Chris Hedges, but hinted that he was not a fan of some of the night's other recipients.

"Well I would say that Chris Hedges is a good one. I don't know that all these awards I agree with," said Stone.

However when pressed he simply added: "I'm not going to get into that."

One topic he was happy to get into was the much talked-about "Breaking Bad" finale. Stone has been vocal about his dislike of the series' ending since the final episode aired last month.

I simply said checking in at the end, the last episode, I was surprised that, for a series that got such high praise, they had such a ridiculous ending. That the fate of the character would depend upon the fantasy of a machine gun going off at the right time with the right elevation and killing all the bad guys was kind of silly. But I think as a movie writer I would have been run out of the theater," he said.

"Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow, Molly Ringwald and Anjelica Huston also attended the The PEN Center USA event in Beverly Hills.

Kickstarter, the online funding platform responsible for breathing life into projects like Zack Braff's "Wish I Was Here" and the highly anticipated "Veronica Mars" movie, was also one of the evening's honorees.

Actress Laura Dern said she felt the Kicktstarter love recently when her HBO series "Enlightened" was cancelled after two seasons.

"You know they canceled the show and suddenly this outpouring of fans and supporters were like 'we've gone to Kickstarter. We are raising money.' I'm like 'What?' So I was very moved by that and it definitely inspired me," she said.

So is there hope that the critically acclaimed dramedy will find life after HBO?

"Frankly I think that sort of the day has closed on that, but you know, I know what it felt like to not get to do something we all loved and we wanted one more season to finish up certain things we wanted to say and so now I know firsthand what it feels like for so many artists who have a plan and there's somewhere to go with it."

The Golden Globes dominated the conversation at the annual National Board of Review awards gala in New York, Tuesday night (9 JAN. 2018).

Before Hanks picked up his NBR for Best Actor in "The Post," he summed up Sunday's Globes as turning point for awards shows.

"I believe that it was the first gaudy dog and pony show award presentation broadcast of what is a new era," Hanks said.

"For me it was literally - there was an understanding that women were being heard and listened to and were able to speak. When Natalie Portman came out and said and here are the all-male nominees that would never have been said before. That would have never been spoken before," Wilson said.

But the actress feels the movement has further to go.

"I think it's drawing attention to all the things that we need to have changed, not just the sexual harassment and the abuse but also how we're going to employ more women in the workplace across the board. Because until we have parity in companies and film sets and salaries. There really won't be any change," Wilson said.

Winfrey's fiery speech Sunday after accepting the Cecil B. De Mille award prompted many to call for a 2020 presidential run. And earlier in the evening, host Seth Meyers suggested Hanks as her running mate.

Wilson likes the idea.

"Yes. I know. I'm very happy about that," Wilson said.

After Hanks responded in the affirmative, Wilson added: "I could see it happening."

His director, Steven Spielberg said Winfrey would be a good fit.

"Oprah is one of the most articulate people that I know. And she - she told the truth. She said what we needed to hear. She said what she needed to say. And you know, I think the great thing about Oprah is the one thing she's proven about herself to this society and to women and men in this country, is she knows how to build bridges to a more empathic future. She is that, she is the ambassador of empathy and mindfulness that's open," Spielberg said.

Laurie Metcalf described the feeling of being at the Globes, and watching Winfrey bring the crowd to their feet.

"Inside the room it was electrifying," she said. "And the whole red carpet effort, to look around and see everyone in solidarity just wearing black, of course, and to feel that the launch of that Time's Up movement was really gaining momentum. It was - it was palpable. It was really wonderful to be there."

Metcalf took home the NBR for best supporting actress for her role in "Lady Bird."

Julianna Margulies cited two possible reasons for not being moved by Winfrey's speech

"You'd have to be either dead or threatened," she said. "That might be a good way to look at it. I found it so uplifting and intoxicating. And it, you know, was the first time I went to work the next morning and everyone had - after a year of doom being pounded over our heads every day - it was just a light at the end of the tunnel."

"Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins agreed it was a powerful speech.

"Incredible. Oh yeah, incredible. I mean she's an amazing, amazing woman, leader, mind and human being. And so, it's been a long time since I've seen somebody speak like that. Wonderful," Jenkins said.

So how does she feel about the idea of president Winfrey?

"I think it would be amazing. We need anybody who's great and capable to step up right now and do something. We're in trouble," Jenkins said.

Jenkins was honored by NBR with the Spotlight award.

She was shut out of a Golden Globes nomination, though. Responding to the slight, she referred to the comment by presenter Natalie Portman, as she announced best director: "Here are the all-male nominees."

"Yeah, of course. I thought it was very funny. I do - listen, what are you going to do? You never know why these decisions happen and where they happen and what level. But I definitely think that there is something strange about women directors. Their films may be acknowledged. Their work may be acknowledged, particularly Greta Gerwig is nominated for everything else, but not that. It's odd," she said. "But what are you going to do. It's got to be pointed out."

Gerwig did take home the director award from NBR for "Lady Bird."

The award for best film went to "The Post." Hanks reflected on the importance of telling the story of the Washington Post's journalistic milestone in publishing of the Pentagon Papers in 1971.

"We actually felt as though we were on one of two great stories. We were talking about the First Amendment and the assault on it by the chief executive of the United States. We also were into the concept of Kay Graham becoming Kay Graham, a woman's equal, ascension, to an equal place in the workplace, in that case, the boss," Hanks said.

The actor drew on other similarities too.

"I understand when Liz Hanna wrote the script, and when Amy Pascal and Stacey Snider - three women by the way - read this for the first time, it was in October. We were going to have the first female president of the United States in just another week or two, it didn't happen. So we ended up actually catching up into the whirlwind, I think, in the course of making this movie, which makes it an awful lot easier to talk about on nights like this," Hanks said.

The National Board of Review is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring excellence in film.

The winners were announced in November.

At a Wednesday (7 NOVEMBER) soiree honoring recording artist Joni Mitchell, celebrity attendees shared their thoughts on the results of the Mid-terms.

Aactress and producer Rita Wilson said she was "hoping for a bigger blue wave."

"But I'll take what was there, because I think change was made, and I think it's important that that got done. Lots of women, for the first time, over a hundred (in the House). I think that's really important. And I feel a little bit like I can breathe a bit more tonight. (Laughs.)"

Recording artist James Taylor said he was "glad that we've managed to see some change, that there's some prospect of putting the brakes on this sort of runaway, kind of rogue government in Washington that, really, has been very alarming to a lot of us."

"And I think the nation's sent a clear message that they want some checks on this administration. And that a Republican congress, executive and Supreme Court is maybe not such a good thing. So, yes, I'm pleased. I do wish that we'd managed to do more. I supported a number of candidates and have skin in the game. So, I also just have a very powerful investment in what I feel my country is. I'm an unapologetic supporter of Barack Obama. And I miss him. And it's alarming for me to see the Republicans in Washington dismantling and disassembling all the good work he tried to do. So, you know, it's good to see there be some movement and in the direction of sanity. But, you know, it remains to be seen what can be done."

Actress Rosanna Arquette said she watched the returns with a group of high-profiled activists, including former California senator Barbara Boxer, and actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

"We all were there together, watching the outcome and, you know, we had some disappointments," Arquette reported. "We're still counting, because they're still counting in Florida -- and (Georgia gubernatorial candidate) Stacey Abrams: We'll see what happens there, please God. But women, we've got women in Congress. And we've got we have the House and we're, today more than ever, thank God we do, because we see the dictatorship coming, right upon us. You know, it started with the freedom of the press. Rights being taken away. (CNN reporter) Jim Acosta has been locked out of the White House tonight. Not OK."

English comedy star, Eric Idle (Monty Python) said he's on "the orange-monster fast."

"And I try and teach people: When you have a mad person who's trying to interest you every day in whatever he has to say, the important thing is to look the other way. That's what I do. Because I am not American, so I don't get to vote. So, as I explain in my book, 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,' available now, I have a whole passage, which I do a riff on why I'm not American.
