Donald Trump is gone from the boardroom of NBC's reboot of "Celebrity Apprentice," but he's kept a business connection to the reality show.

President-elect Trump has an executive producer credit on "The New Celebrity Apprentice," said Clare Anne Darragh, a spokesman for "Apprentice" creator Mark Burnett. She declined further comment on Trump's participation in the show that taped last February.

Trump's representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The series debuts Jan. 2 with Arnold Schwarzenegger replacing Trump as host. Schwarzenegger is an executive producer on the new show, as Trump was on the original.

Trump's continued stake in a TV series is yet another unusual aspect of the election of a businessman and reality star to the presidency. Questions have been raised on how his extensive holdings may intersect with his actions as president.

Trump has tweeted that he will disclose plans on Dec. 15 to "take me completely out of business operations" without detailing what that means. He previously said that he plans to hand over management of his business to three of his adult children.

That falls short of what some government ethics experts are pushing him for, which is that he sell his assets and put the money in a "blind trust" overseen by an independent manager not related to him.

Celebrity attorney Lisa Bloom has built a career defending victims of sexual harassment and assault. Now she says she's trying to "make a difference here on the other side" by defending movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday (6 OCT. 2017), Bloom both defended Weinstein and acknowledged he'd been "stupid." She saluted the women who have come forward to allege wrongdoing but said many allegations were overblown and consisted of Weinstein telling a woman she "looked cute without my glasses."

"He wanted to be respectful to women and he still wants to be respectful to women. And he's asked me, of all people, to help guide him in that direction, to explain to him the laws of sexual harassment and why this is important," Bloom said.

The New York Times reported that Weinstein had reached at least eight legal settlements with women over alleged harassment. The allegations have been levied by actresses including Ashley Judd and former employees at both the Weinstein Co. and Weinstein's former company, Miramax.

Bloom has long represented women in high-profile sexual harassment cases, including alleged victims of former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and model Janice Dickinson in her case against Bill Cosby. She said she met Weinstein a year ago after his company decided to develop Bloom's book "Suspicion Nation." She said she confronted him then about rumors of harassment in a "frank, blunt way."

"I was very surprised that he admitted to being stupid, to saying things that he shouldn't have said and I told him that needs to be your approach. You can't go back and change what's happened in the past but you can go forward and acknowledge it, ask for forgiveness, change your behavior," she said. "And I thought I had a chance to make a difference here on the other side. We'll see if I've done that right."

Weinstein's attorney, Charles J. Harder, said in a statement that the Times story is "saturated with false and defamatory statements." Bloom more gently poured cold water on the report, saying there have been some complaints against Weinstein but "not as many as" as the Times said. She added that some of the allegations were "incorrect" and that eyewitnesses had "a different perspective."

"Some of the allegations which I have read is, 'He told me I had a nice dress on.' 'He told me I looked cute without my glasses.' Probably he shouldn't be saying things like that in the workplace. Does that rise to the level of sexual harassment, legally? No, it doesn't," she said.

Bloom said Weinstein has anger problems and said he can be intimidating. She said he "knows he has to work on that" and praised him for acknowledging that he "hurt people." But she said that unlike at Fox News when women came forward with allegations of sexual abuse, Weinstein was not "trashing them, sending private investigators to dig up dirt on them, humiliating them."

Stars of the fashion and show business worlds joined friends and relatives of Gianni Versace on Tuesday to pay their last respects to the slain designer at his Italian palazzo.

Rock star Elton John and supermodel Naomi Campbell were among mourners who stood in contemplation at an urn containing Versace's ashes inside his Milan headquarters.

Mourners gathered for the memorial service in the city's Gothic cathedral for the fashion guru, who was shot to death on July 15th.

Surrounded by security guards, rock star Elton John arrived at the Versace palazzo to say goodbye to one of his closest friends.

All morning, friends and colleagues of the murdered designer filed through the courtyard of his Milan headquarters where his ashes are being kept in an urn placed on a makeshift altar.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell flew in from South Africa, and went to pay her respects carrying a single white rose.

Versace's sister, Donatella, who has vowed to carry on Gianni's empire with his other brother Santo, was also there to greet the mourners.

Versace's murder on the steps of his Miami mansion last Tuesday sent shockwaves through the fashion world.

His killer is still at large.

The memorial service was also graced by other celebrities from fashion and show business, including Valentino, Lagerfeld and Sting.

Several women who've made strong and recognizable contributions to media were honored at the 2018 Women's Media Awards Thursday (1 NOV. 2018).  From movie stars to TV actresses to famed feminists, there was a diverse cross section of women all gathered to celebrate each other, as well as remind each other to stay diligent in the fight for women's equality.

Actress and activist Jane Fonda, co-founder of the Women's Media Center which hosted the awards, said it's vital that female voices are heard loud and clear:

"We're an organization that is fighting to have more women represented in the media because our, our understanding of life events, war, peace, health care, whatever, is different than men's," said Fonda.  "We experience it different, we understand it differently and if you don't have our narrative equally represented in the media, then women and men are robbed of half the story."

However, this political climate is unchartered waters for journalists with the rise of the "fake news", a term coined by President Trump.  He shares a tense relationship with the media - one that the country may not have ever experienced.

"Shortly after President Trump became president and assumed the office, I think one of his favorite targets has been the news media, you know, and saying that there's fake news when it doesn't fit, it doesn't please him or doesn't fit his agenda," said news broadcaster Katie Couric.

Couric also said the president's perceived bashing of the media might make it difficult for some to remain unbiased.

"I think it's really hard when there is a president who has challenged sort of the norms of conventional presidential behavior", she said.  "It's very hard, I think, at times for journalists to be unbiased.  I think that we really need to focus more on policy than personality."

But famed feminist Gloria Steinem said she believes what's currently going on between journalists and the White House is encouraging both young women and men to purse the craft.

"It does make it difficult, but it also has enraged women with its inaccuracy, with its idea that there are only two sides to every issue when in fact, the point is not to be balanced, but to be accurate," said Steinem, "and very often, outside groups haven't been part of either side, you know.  So just to make our own lives and real experiences visible is a huge motive.  There's actually more people enrolling in journalism school than ever before."

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, one of the targets in last week's mail bomb plot (24 OCT. 2018), gave the closing remarks at the awards show.  She said everyone needs to remain alert.

"It is a dangerous time.  And yes, for those of us who are threatened - well, many of us are accustomed to being threatened, you know.  I'm accustomed to being threatened, to be killed, all the time," she said.  But she added that while she takes her safety seriously, threats won't slow her down.

"Well, I'm careful, but I'm not intimated by it at all.  I'm careful and I don't do foolish things and I have security where I need to have security, and I keep doing what I do."

And Lisa Borders, the recently-appointed new president of Time's Up, said to expect more solidarity and demonstrations among entertainers during this year's awards season, but she wouldn't reveal too much.

"I can't spill the beans - our members in the entertainment industry would be very upset with me," said Borders.  "But suffice it to say their fire burns bright around this issue, they helped unearthed the issue and stood courageously in the face of a lot of criticism.  So we want to let them break that news for what we'll be doing during awards season."

Media baron Rupert Murdoch and wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch, have reached a divorce deal.

The two appeared in a New York City court on Wednesday to tell a judge they had arrived at a settlement to end their 14-year marriage. The terms were not disclosed in court.

It was the third marriage for 82-year-old Murdoch, who runs an entertainment and media empire.

Murdoch split his firm News Corp. earlier this year into two companies: the journalism and publishing portion, still called News Corp., and the more profitable film and TV unit, 21st Century Fox.

Both are publicly traded and based in New York.

The divorce won't affect control of the companies or the succession plan for them.

Rupert Murdoch controls them through a family trust that benefits his four children from previous marriages - Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan and James. The latter three have had active roles in the companies.

Upon Rupert Murdoch's death, all four will have an equal say in what happens to the roughly 38 percent voting stock the trust holds in both companies.

He and Wendi Deng Murdoch, 44, have two school-age daughters, Grace and Chloe. They are beneficiaries of 8.7 million non-voting shares being held in a separate trust.

Wendi Deng Murdoch is not a shareholder, according to the person familiar with the situation.

Born in China, Wendi Deng Murdoch is a Yale graduate who worked as a junior executive at News Corp.'s subsidiary Star TV in Hong Kong, where she met her future husband at a 1997 cocktail party.

She left Star TV before marrying the media mogul in 1999 aboard Murdoch's private yacht, in New York.

She produced the 2011 movie "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," released by News Corp.'s Fox Searchlight.

Wendi Deng Murdoch literally leaped into the spotlight when she jumped up to smack a protester who was throwing a cream pie at her husband during a 2011 British parliamentary hearing into phone hacking by News Corp. newspapers.

BILL O'REILLY OUT AT FOX NEWS CHANNEL AFTER 20 YEARS

Bill O'Reilly has lost his job at Fox News Channel following reports that five women had been paid millions of dollars to keep quiet about harassment allegations.

21st Century Fox issued a statement Wednesday that "after a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and Bill O'Reilly have agreed that Bill O'Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel."

He had been scheduled to return from a vacation next Monday. O'Reilly was photographed in Rome shaking Pope Francis' hand on Wednesday.

It marks a stunning end to a near-perfect marriage between a pugnacious personality and network. For two decades, O'Reilly has ruled the "no spin zone" with cable news' most popular show, and his ratings had never been higher.

In a memo to Fox staff on Wednesday, the Murdochs said the decision followed an extensive review done in collaboration with an outside counsel.

Fox said that Tucker Carlson's show would move to 8 p.m. to replace O'Reilly and that the panel talk show "The Five" would take Carlson's time slot at 9 p.m.

The fast-moving story took shape with an April 2 report in The New York Times that five women had been paid a total of $13 million to keep quiet about unpleasant encounters with O'Reilly, who has denied any wrongdoing. Dozens of his show's advertisers fled, even though O'Reilly's viewership increased. O'Reilly has denied wrongdoing.

Even though at least one of the harassment cases against O'Reilly dated back more than a decade and was widely reported then, the accumulation of cases outlined in the Times damaged him much more extensively. It wasn't clear when those stories would end, with a group of women demonstrating in front of Fox's headquarters Tuesday and another woman, a former clerical worker at Fox, calling a harassment hotline and accusing the host of boorish behavior.

"I'm not going away," said Lisa Bloom, attorney for the latest accuser and another woman who alleges her career stalled because she spurned O'Reilly's advances. "My phone is ringing off the hook."

O'Reilly's attorney, Marc Kasowitz, charged that his client was being subjected to a "brutal campaign of character assassination" and that there is a smear campaign orchestrated by far-left organizations bent on destroying O'Reilly for political and financial reasons.

Conservative personality Glenn Beck — who once lost a job at Fox News Channel because a similar campaign choked his program of paying advertisers — came to O'Reilly's defense of Wednesday, but it was too late.

"You need to write and call Fox News Channel today and tell them, you can lose your advertisers or you can lose your viewers," Beck said on his radio show. "But you have to put some spine back into the Murdoch family and the Fox News Channel board because you are about to lose Bill O'Reilly."

O'Reilly's fans aren't likely to be happy about him losing his job, particularly on a controversy set in motion by the Times. His show's viewership increased the week after the story appeared — O'Reilly didn't address it on the air — and has sunk since he left for vacation. Potential successors like Dana Perino, Eric Bolling and Greg Gutfeld have substituted for O'Reilly since he left for vacation.

Vatican spokesman Greg Burke confirmed O'Reilly was in the VIP section for the pope's Wednesday appearance. Burke, a former Fox News correspondent in Rome, denied having facilitated the tickets. Such tickets can be obtained via special request to the papal household from embassies, high-ranking churchmen or Vatican officials.

Francis always swings by the VIP seats at the end of his audience for a quick round of handshakes. A photographer from the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano snapped a photo of Francis reaching out to shake his hand.

TV ACADEMY HONORS 'NEWSROOM,' 'PARENTHOOD'

The red carpet was full of talk about current events, dancing and meth labs as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored TV that's created "positive social change."

The TV Academy on Thursday night (9 May 2013) honored eight programs for what it called "television with a conscience."

Honorees including the cast of NBC series "Parenthood" and HBO series "The Newsroom" gathered for a dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

"I think programming on television in terms of drama is really interesting these days. Really great, great writing. There's just too much to watch now," said veteran TV actress Dana Delaney, who hosted the event for the fifth straight year.

"The Newsroom" star Olivia Munn said she's noticed plenty of attention to Aaron Sorkin's show whenever a big news story breaks in the US.

"You see on Twitter when some big news event happened, there's a flood of tweets that go out about, 'I can't wait to see how they say this on 'The Newsroom,'" she said. "There are so many things that happened -- with Sandy, Hurricane Sandy, with the Newtown (shooting), with the Boston bombings. And the biggest thing that Sorkin wants to make sure of is that he never exploits peoples' tragedies."

Munn said she'd been closely following the case of the Cleveland, Ohio women who were kidnapped and held for years before being freed this week.

"The Ohio -- those Ohio girls, I've got to tell you. The amount of courage and bravery and strength to endure -- I mean, it is -- that is a testament to just how strong you can be," she said. "Those young girls who were kidnapped and got out -- that affects all of us. These are -- this is the youth of America. And women can be preyed upon so easily. We have to stop people. DL Hughley was being honored for his documentary "The Endangered List," about the plight of black men in America.

He said news of the honor came as he was struggling on the reality competition show "Dancing With The Stars."

And black people are so ashamed of me so I hope this redeems me somewhat," Hughley said. "I'm so exhausted, I couldn't creatively come up with anything. It takes 10,000 hours to be good at anything. "Parenthood" ended its fourth season recently having tackled topics ranging from Asperger's syndrome to breast cancer. But star Sam Jaeger said he was proud that it hadn't resorted to "Breaking Bad"-level shock tactics.

Former "Sex and the City" and "Northern Exposure" star John Corbett was honoring producers of his TV movie "A Smile As Big As the Moon" -- and also celebrating his 52nd birthday.

"Community" star Yvette Nicole Brown said she expected to hear within the next few days whether the acclaimed but little-watched NBC series would be cancelled or picked up for a fifth season.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch arrived at St. Bride's church in London on Saturday to celebrate his marriage to model-actress Jerry Hall a day earlier.

Murdoch and Hall will hold a celebration ceremony at St. Bride's, the journalists' church, in London's Fleet Street.

Britain's newspapers were based in Fleet Street until Murdoch moved his printing presses to east London in 1986 to escape the grip of the powerful printers' unions. The rest of the print media soon followed, but the area remains the spiritual home of British journalism.

The couple married on Friday in London's Spencer House, which was built in the 18th century by ancestors of the late Princess Diana.

Murdoch's News UK confirmed that 84-year-old Murdoch and Hall, 59, had married, after announcing their engagement in January,

It is the first marriage for Texas-born Hall, a former supermodel and long-term partner of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. PRESS DECENDS ON ANNA NICOLE SMITH'S HOMETOWN

Some residents in Anna Nicole Smith's hometown reacted with sympathy on Friday to the death of the former Playboy model, who died on Thursday aged 39.

"I think people will be praying for her and for her family," said Marcus Sheffield, pastor at the First Baptist Church in Mexia, Texas, where Smith was from.

He called her death a "tragedy."

Many residents however say they do not even remember her. Many of those who do are ashamed of her antics, Playboy playmate fame and pop culture status.

While the US media continued to converge on Mexia, the local newspaper decided not to feed into the media frenzy in the aftermath of Smith's death.

"We would just stick more with what's going on in our area," said Lynette Copley, a local newspaper publisher.

Anna Nicole Smith, who was born Vickie Lynn Hogan, loved the flash of cameras, the tabloid reporters encircling her, the bold headlines carrying her name.

When in junior high school, as she told the story, she moved with her mother to Mexia (pronounced meh-HAY'-uh), about 80 miles (130

kilometres) southeast of Dallas.

Smith, whose turbulent life was played out on the cover of tabloids, grew up wanting to be the next Marilyn Monroe.

Newspapers have repeatedly pointed out that she was just three years older than her idol, Norma Jean Mortensen (Monroe), who died of an overdose of sleeping pills at 36.

British newspapers promised on Monday to respect the privacy of Britain's young princes.

The calls for increased press vigilance have intensified since the death of Princess Diana.

The Independent - a leading British newspaper - has even pledged not to publish photographs issued by Buckingham Palace.

But some say the self-imposed ban on printing paparazzi pictures simply won't work.

Some of the U-K's leading newspapers, including one of the country's most sensational tabloids, have vowed to change their policy of publishing paparazzi-style photographs.

The tabloids are the most avid followers of the royals, but took action after Princess Diana's brother Earl Spencer launched a stinging attack on the use of paparazzi photographs in British newspapers.

Earl Spencer said editors who had bought paparazzi photographs of her private moments had "blood on their hands".

The Independent newspaper - not renowned for covering royal stories - went further.

The newspaper says it will never again carry photographs of Prince William, 15 and Prince Harry, 12, in private situations even if the pictures came from Buckingham Palace itself.

The Independent, a serious broadsheet, has never been as lucrative a market for the paparazzi photographers that the tabloids were.

Britain's top selling newspaper - The Sun - with a circulation of around 4 (m) million copies daily, also says it will no longer use photographs which invade the privacy of Princes William and Harry.

But those involved in dealing with national newspapers say the new mood won't last.

ATTORNEY FINDS HERSELF ON A DIFFERENT SIDE IN WEINSTEIN CASE

Celebrity attorney Lisa Bloom has built a career defending victims of sexual harassment and assault. Now she says she's trying to "make a difference here on the other side" by defending movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday (6 OCT. 2017), Bloom both defended Weinstein and acknowledged he'd been "stupid." She saluted the women who have come forward to allege wrongdoing but said many allegations were overblown and consisted of Weinstein telling a woman she "looked cute without my glasses."

"He wanted to be respectful to women and he still wants to be respectful to women. And he's asked me, of all people, to help guide him in that direction, to explain to him the laws of sexual harassment and why this is important," Bloom said.

The New York Times reported that Weinstein had reached at least eight legal settlements with women over alleged harassment. The allegations have been levied by actresses including Ashley Judd and former employees at both the Weinstein Co. and Weinstein's former company, Miramax.

Bloom has long represented women in high-profile sexual harassment cases, including alleged victims of former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and model Janice Dickinson in her case against Bill Cosby. She said she met Weinstein a year ago after his company decided to develop Bloom's book "Suspicion Nation." She said she confronted him then about rumors of harassment in a "frank, blunt way."

"I was very surprised that he admitted to being stupid, to saying things that he shouldn't have said and I told him that needs to be your approach. You can't go back and change what's happened in the past but you can go forward and acknowledge it, ask for forgiveness, change your behavior," she said. "And I thought I had a chance to make a difference here on the other side. We'll see if I've done that right."

Weinstein's attorney, Charles J. Harder, said in a statement that the Times story is "saturated with false and defamatory statements." Bloom more gently poured cold water on the report, saying there have been some complaints against Weinstein but "not as many as" as the Times said. She added that some of the allegations were "incorrect" and that eyewitnesses had "a different perspective."

"Some of the allegations which I have read is, 'He told me I had a nice dress on.' 'He told me I looked cute without my glasses.' Probably he shouldn't be saying things like that in the workplace. Does that rise to the level of sexual harassment, legally? No, it doesn't," she said.

Bloom said Weinstein has anger problems and said he can be intimidating. She said he "knows he has to work on that" and praised him for acknowledging that he "hurt people." But she said that unlike at Fox News when women came forward with allegations of sexual abuse, Weinstein was not "trashing them, sending private investigators to dig up dirt on them, humiliating them."

"I salute any woman that comes forward with complaints of sexual harassment you know? Harvey has had to learn. This is not an easy time for him either. Probably nobody has sympathy for him right now and that's fine. The Duchess of York withdrew an injunction on Thursday against the publication of a controversial book that delves into her private life.

The book "Fergie: Her Secret Life" was launched earlier this week at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The publishers claim the book, written by one of Fergie's former closest friends, is dynamite.

Her climb down now means she won't have to face a court appearance that could have proven highly embarrassing.

The controversial book was launched at the world's largest book fair in Frankfurt on Wednesday.

It's called "Fergie: Her Secret Life" and is written by her former close friend Dr Allan Starkie.

The book is seen as potentially damaging, and until today Thursday the Duchess of York had planned to take its writer and publisher to court, in an attempt to prevent the book from being published.

The book had been halted in the United Kingdom by an injunction, which prevents publication of information gained during Dr. Starkie's involvement in the Duchess' affairs.

But the about-turn by the Duchess is welcome news to the book's publisher Michael O'Mara.

"Well, we're very pleased to announce the Duchess of York has decided to discontinue her legal action against my company and Dr. Starkie and we'd' be able to publish our book "Fergie: Her Secret Life" as scheduled on 4th of November and needless to say we're absolutely thrilled. The Duchess' advisors contacted us yesterday and asked us if we could confirm that the main script contained no material damaging to other members of the Royal Family and we were very happy to confirm that the manuscript did not contain such material. And given that, they decided to walk away from the action. And as I say, we're absolutely thrilled."

Starkie, a former business partner of 41-year-old John Bryan who was in turn a former financial adviser to the Duchess, gives an explosive account of Fergie's friendship with the Texan businessman.

Television and film-industry workers protested outside the Beverley Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, where the Golden Globes was taking place, calling for a swift end to the dispute that has left one of Hollywood's brightest and giddiest nights in shambles.

The Golden Globes Awards ceremony was cancelled for an hour-long televised announcement featuring television news personalities disclosing the winners in-between clips of nominated movies and shows, lacking the glitz and glamour the event is traditionally known for.

A few hours before the show, a dozen non-writer entertainment industry workers on strike stood outside the Beverly Hilton hotel, holding signs asking for the studios and the writers to resume negotiations.

The picket was greeted by supportive honks from cars on Santa Monica Boulevard.

"All of us have been put out of work and both sides won't negotiate. Their talks have stopped so weeks and weeks we've been waiting for them to resolve this and they haven't yet," said Karen Kovacic, a first aid worker with International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

The pickets were outnumbered by international television crews, but their protest was greeted by supportive honks from cars speeding by on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Another set nurse said: "We're not getting paid. They've seized all the funds."

On strike since 5 November, the Writers Guild of America refused to let union members work on the star-studded banquet-style show, prompting actors to boycott the ceremony rather than cross picket lines.

Despite the gowns and formal wear, the Globes are known as the freewheeling cousin of the Academy Awards, a place where stars can have a few drinks and cut loose as they celebrate the year's achievements in film and television.

The news conference format was a far cry from a ceremony whose star wattage would have been powered by the likes of Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, who all had acting nominations.

The fate of Hollywood's biggest night, the February 24 Oscars, remains uncertain.

Guild leader Patric Verrone has said writers would not be allowed to work on that show, either, which could force stars to make an even tougher choice on whether to stay away or cross the picket line.

Oscar organisers insist their show will come off as planned, with or without the writers.

As a result of their strike, films may not get quite the same box-office bounce they typically receive after winning high-profile prizes, which can add tens of millions of dollars to their haul during the long awards season.

Yet actors and writers say tough action is needed to make sure creative people get their fair financial share for the long haul.

UK ACTOR TENNANT ACCEPTS DAMAGES OVER TABLOID PHONE HACKING

Former "Doctor Who" star David Tennant has accepted an apology and damages from Rupert Murdoch's newspaper company over phone hacking by a now-defunct tabloid.

Tennant is one of six people whose claims against News Group Newspapers were settled Tuesday (30 JAN. 2018) at the High Court in London.

Lawyer Sara Mansoori said Tennant was "outraged and shocked by the invasions of his privacy by individuals working for or acting on behalf of the News of the World."

News Group lawyer Ben Silverstone said the firm offered sincere apologies. It is paying the claimants' legal costs and undisclosed damages.

Murdoch closed the tabloid News of the World in 2011 after revelations it had eavesdropped on the voicemails of celebrities, politicians and a 13-year-old murder victim.

Murdoch's company has paid out millions in compensation.

As the first anniversary marking the death of the Princess of Wales draws near, preparations are underway in Paris to commemorate the occasion.

Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31st last year.

The crash also claimed the lives of her companion Dodi Al-Fayed and driver Henri Paul.

It's nearly a year ago since Princess Diana and her companion Dodi Al Fayed were killed when their Mercedes Benz crashed into a pillar beneath the Pont de L'Alma in Paris, killing them and their driver and seriously injuring bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones.

Since then the Pont de l'Alma and the 'Flame of Liberty' dedicated to Princess Diana have become one of the most famous tourist attractions in Paris.

The golden-painted replica of the flame of the Statue of Liberty, has become a place of pilgrimage and a constant meeting-point for hundreds of people each day.

As the first anniversary of Diana's death draws near, newspapers and magazines are full of photos of the late Princess, special television programmes are planned and the international media are already in town.

Nevertheless, neither the British Embassy nor the Paris City Council have planned any official commemorations.

The royal family has told authorities that expressions of grief should be "limited to personal reflection".

The only formal ceremony will be a church service, not yet confirmed, at Saint Michael's Church.

However it's expected thousands will gather on August 31st to mourn Diana with a candlelight vigil at the site of the car crash.

The gathering has been organised by a private tourist group called "Odyssee Decouverte".

Stephanie Debove-Thery, head of the association, says she's organising the gathering because she's been deeply moved by the reaction of people all over the world to Diana's death.

Tourists can make the trip in a minibus or a black Mercedes like the one Diana and Dodi were in when they died.

And the stream of books analysing the Princess's death continues.

The latest is by Christopher Andersen and has been released in France this week.

The French publisher says he's decided to release the book even though it's not the type of work he usually publishes, because he believes it's been seriously written.

"I think that this book is good, in terms of professionalism. I think that it has not been written in a room, he (Andersen) has really worked on it. During one year, he made dozens of interviews. In the book Christopher Andersen reveals that the first reaction from the Queen when she heard news of Diana's death was to know if she was wearing any royal jewellery.

Hong Kong's first ever trade fair for film and TV kicked off Wednesday featuring more than 70 exhibitors.

The Hong Kong International Film Market, "Filmart" allows international and local distributors to showcase their productions to a variety of entertainment industry heavyweights.

But with merely 19-days remaining before China resumes sovereignty on the British colony, fears of censorship may cause concern in this year's debut exhibition.

Hong Kong's International Film Market opened Wednesday in the territory.

Local celebrities, such as action star Chow Yun-fatt also attended the opening ceremony.

Hong Kong is the world's second largest movie distributor behind the US, exporting more than 200 titles each year.

It is the third largest film producer in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood, India's equivalent of the American movie hub.

For Hong Kong's film industry, uncertainty concerning freedom of expression and freedom of art are what worries film producers.

Whether these liberties will remain without interference from the Central government once China takes over, is still questionable.

Many say Hong Kong's film market will have the same freedoms after the territory reverts to Chinese sovereignty on July 1st.

The Secretary for Broadcasting and Culture guarantees the government will keep minimum intervention while providing the maximum support after handover.

"Film and Television industry will continue to be governed by the existing laws of Hong Kong. And the existing laws only limits their freedom of expression in respect of sex and violence, beyond that we do not have other criteria to say which film or TV program

Others fear that tight government censorship will apply to the territory as it currently does in Mainland China.

Production is only allowed in official studios in China and all scripts must have the ministry's approval prior to public showing.

With talks on unification along the China and Taiwan straits, Taiwanese film makers are optimistic about Hong Kong's future.

They say the handover will actually bring the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan closer together.

Despite not having a single diamond mine, Israel is the world's largest exporter of the luxury gemstone.

Tel Aviv recently hosted the biennial World Diamond Congress, where 100-million US dollars worth of bling was on the auction block.

But beyond the glitz and glamour, the industry also discussed Leonardo DiCaprio's upcoming movie about "blood diamonds" -- where money from the sale of these stones are said to finance wars.

STORYLINE:

Rough stones arrive in Tel Aviv, Israel, from all over the world to be appraised, cut and polished, and then sold on the international market as part of a 10-billion US dollar business.

Generous tax breaks have allowed the industry to flourish, leading to the setting up of the world's largest diamond exchange: the Israel Diamond Bourse.

The biggest names in the business gathered in Tel Aviv last week for the World Diamond Congress where millions of US dollars worth of diamonds were up for sale.

Some of the world's most impressive loose stones and exclusive pieces of jewelry were on offer.

However, the sparkles of the gems were outshone by discussions on an upcoming Hollywood film about conflict diamonds -- the name given to the sale of diamonds to fund civil wars in countries such as Sierra Leone and Angola.

The movie, "The Blood Diamond" starring Leonardo DiCaprio is about a diamond smuggler who moves stones to finance the civil wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia at the end of the 1990's.

The script is allegedly based on real, historical events that gave the diamond trade a bad name, and brought the concept of "conflict diamonds" to the public attention.

After serious efforts to stop the trade in conflict diamonds, gem merchants fear the release of the movie close to the Christmas shopping season will be a public relations disaster for their industry.

Unscrupulous warlords in west Africa used slave labour to mine diamonds which were sold into the international market outside the regular channels.

Outcry from foreign governments and NGO's prompted the diamond industry to adopt measures aimed at stifling the trade in conflict gems.

In 2000, delegates of the World Diamond Congress representing traders, cutters and polishers from across the world, said it would close off any legal loopholes allowing conflict diamonds to enter the market.

They also developed a certification system to monitor rough diamonds from mines to international trading centres so that the identity and origin of each diamond on the market could be sourced.

The system, called the Kimberley Process, was named after the world famous Kimberley diamond mine in South Africa.

Shmuel Schnitzer, President of Israel Diamond Exchange, says that currently there is not a single diamond being exported from Africa without going through the Kimberly Process.

Schnitzer wants every diamond shopper to be confident they're not buying 'blood diamonds' and his organisation wants every retailer to know how to explain the Kimberley Process when faced with a wary customer.

Participants in the Tel Aviv conference heard how the percentage of conflict diamonds in international trade has been reduced to almost zero.

This means that the profits from mining in places like Sierra Leone aren't used to finance brutal civil wars, but that does not go far enough for the NGO's who want to see more transparency in the diamond business, nor does it satisfy some diamond traders.

Martin Rapaport edits a weekly trade magazine that is considered required reading for anyone in the business.

After hearing an entire session at the congress dedicated to refuting the expected bad publicity created by the forthcoming movie, he took the microphone to ask a few difficult questions.

For Rapaport and others, cleansing diamonds of blood is not going far enough.

He quoted United Nations statistics about poverty and infant mortality in Sierra Leone where thousands of people still dig for diamonds in appalling conditions and earn starvation wages while diamond traders reap handsome profits.

"Is the problem the movie, is that the problem?" Rapaport asked a PR expert who spoke at the congress, "Or is the problem the fact that one million people are getting screwed? What's the problem, do we have an ethical problem that has to go beyond selling more diamonds or do we give a damn about the people in Africa?"

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says his campaign is prepared to lay out specific policy plans. He's just not ready yet.

And in the meantime, he's selling his strong personality and criticizing his rivals, particularly Jeb Bush for a lack of vigor.

"There's no energy there, no energy. We need energy. We need tone," Trump said of Bush during a 50-minute speech to more than 2,000 people at a Republican fundraising dinner in Michigan, his first public appearance since last Thursday's first Republican primary debate. "We have heads being chopped off because there are Christians in the Middle East. ... The world is cracking up and they're worried about my tone."

It was Trump's first appearance as a presidential candidate in Michigan, where he decried China's decision to devalue its currency and Ford Motor Co.'s planned $2.5 billion investment in Mexico. He told reporters in Birch Run, north of Flint, that he would announce policy specifics over the next two weeks, but cautioned: "You really have to be flexible on jobs and everything else."

Trump said currency devaluation "means suck the blood out of the United States" and vowed that if he were president, a Ford plant planned in Mexico would be built in the United States, preferably Michigan.

The former reality television star, furious over what he deemed unfair treatment, lashed out at Kelly and the network, telling CNN on Friday that during the debate Kelly had "blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever."

But the feud between Trump and Fox News, one of the most powerful voices in Republican and conservative circles, appeared to thaw on Monday after the network's chairman, Roger Ailes, reached out to Trump directly to clear the air.

"I assured him that we will continue to cover this campaign with fairness & balance," Ailes said in a statement.

The network announced shortly after that Trump would be appearing on two of its shows on Tuesday, including a lengthy interview with Sean Hannity.

"As far as I'm concerned, I'm fine with it," Trump told CNN's "New Day" Tuesday morning after concluding a brief phone interview with "Fox & Friends" in which Trump made no mention of Kelly or her questions.

In the interview with Hannity for Tuesday night, Trump said he was prepared to spend $345 million or more to fund his establishment-bucking campaign as long as he's doing well in the polls.

"Sure. You saw my income, my income is $400 million a year," Trump responded, according to highlights released by the network. "Sure, I would spend that if I am doing well!"

The billionaire businessman's campaign has also begun soliciting fundraising dollars through its website. Despite the appeals, campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said that Trump will continue to finance the campaign, but has "been overwhelmed by unsolicited contributions."

She said that Trump will match any money coming in.
