PHOTOGRAPHER WANTS BIG DAMAGES IN BIEBER LAWSUIT

A celebrity photographer sought to boost the potential damages he could win from Justin Bieber in a lawsuit that accuses the singer and a bodyguard of battery in a confrontation outside a recording studio.

The photographer's attorney, Mark DiCowden, said at a Tuesday (1 MAY 2014) hearing that he has documented at least 11 similar alleged assaults against photographers over two years involving Bieber and his security personnel. DiCowden said a punitive damage award for Jeffrey Binion could deter future assaults against celebrity photographers, known as "paparazzi."

"It's not a financial fishing expedition," DiCowden said in asking Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel to allow him to pursue unspecified punitive damages. "It is well known around the world that Justin Bieber does not like to be photographed in public."

Zabel did not immediately rule. Bieber attorney Jared Lopez said there is no evidence that Binion was physically harmed in the alleged attack in June - meaning compensatory damages for the photographer might be minimal - and no proof that Bieber himself told bodyguard Hugo Hesny to go after Binion.

"I don't tell security how to do their job," Bieber said in a March deposition in the case, according to Lopez.

Outside the courtroom, Bieber attorney Roy Black called the lawsuit "frivolous" and intended mainly to generate publicity. DiCowden denied that.

Hesny is facing a misdemeanor battery charge in the Binion case, and he was also recently charged in another photographer confrontation in Atlanta. Bieber is not facing criminal charges in either case. Other incidents involving Bieber bodyguards have occurred in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Argentina and England, according to court papers.

DiCowden also wants Zabel to order Bieber to return to Miami for another deposition to answer questions about his on-again, off-again girlfriend, singer and actress Selena Gomez. DiCowden claims he was improperly prevented from asking those questions during the March deposition and that they are important to the Florida case because she may have been present during previous photographer attacks.

Zabel is holding a hearing in June on that request.

Separately, Bieber has pleaded not guilty to DUI, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license after a Jan. 23 arrest in Miami Beach. A May 5 trial date is set in that case.

A photographer who says he was threatened by Britney Spears is considering legal action against the pop superstar.

Photographer Andrew Deetz said Spears threw a baby bottle and threatened him and another photographer after they took pictures of her leaving a Las Vegas spa.

Spears yelled "I am going to kill you!" and cursed at Andrew Deetz, a photographer who says he was beaten by Spears' bodyguard on Thursday, according to a statement released by Deetz's lawyers.

Deetz, 24, is preparing to sue, his lawyers said. The other photographer involved was Kyle Henderson, 23. They both work for a celebrity photography company called Flynet Pictures, which sells to such publications as People and US Weekly, according to Daniel Kogan, a spokesman for Deetz's lawyers.

The men were taking pictures of Spears, 25, as she and her children - 22-month-old Sean Preston Federline and 10-month-old Jayden James Federline - left the spa at the Wynn Las Vegas casino-hotel around 11:30 a.m., accompanied by two bodyguards.

One bodyguard, Cesar Julio Camera, 37, pushed Henderson against the wall until Wynn security intervened and asked Henderson to leave, the statement said.

As they were about 30 paces away and walking in the opposite direction, Camera attacked Deetz from behind, threw him on the ground and punched and kicked him until security pulled him off, it said.

Afterward, Spears ran toward Henderson but was stopped by security, and then threw a baby bottle at him, it said.

Then, in front of several other hotel guests and bystanders, Spears threatened to kill Deetz and said he should get a restraining order against her because she was going to kill him or hire someone that would, it said.

Camera also told Deetz on July 23 outside the Lisa Kline boutique in Beverly Hills, "I have unfinished business with you," the statement alleged.

Spears' lawyer Gary Stiffelman declined to comment.

Wynn Las Vegas released a statement confirming that Spears stayed at the hotel and left on Thursday, but also declined to discuss the confrontation. "We respect the privacy and do our utmost to maintain the anonymity of our guests," it said.

Las Vegas police issued a summons for a charge of battery to Camera, the only person cited. He could face up to six months in county jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

Stiffelman's office would not relay messages to Camera seeking comment, and The Associated Press was unable to find a phone number for him.

JURY: KEANU REEVES DOESN'T OWE PAPARAZZO

It's a most excellent outcome for Keanu Reeves: The "Matrix" actor doesn't owe a dime to the paparazzo who sued him.

After deliberating for less than three hours, jurors unanimously rejected the civil lawsuit in LA Monday, ruling that Reeves is not responsible for the photographer's alleged injuries.

Alison Silva had asked the jury to award him $711,974 (US Dollars), which includes medical bills, lost wages and punitive damages.

"I respect the jury's decision," Silva told reporters outside the Los Angeles County Superior Court after the verdict was read. "That's what we were here for since the beginning."

Silva said he would continue to work as a paparazzo despite the jury's decision.

Would ever attempt to snap Reeves' photo again?

"Why not? It's business," he responded. "I wish Keanu is happy in his life. I have nothing against Keanu."

Silva claimed that the star of "The Matrix," "Speed" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" struck him with his Porsche in March 2007, causing him to fall and injure his left wrist.

Jurors heard how Silva gave contradictory statements about what happened and even saw a video of the celebrity shooter using his supposedly damaged hand to scale down a chain link fence after getting video of Britney Spears.

"We obviously felt from day one that Mr. Reeves was not negligent," said Reeves' attorney, Alfred Gerisch, after the verdict. "It's unfortunate that this lawsuit was brought and it's unfortunate that we had to go this far - a lot of time, a lot of effort and obviously a lot of money."

The actor waited for the verdict outside the courthouse's cafeteria on the roof but declined to comment after the decision.

Attorneys issued closing arguments Friday, the jury deliberated about five minutes before leaving for the weekend, and resumed their work Monday morning. All 12 decided to reject the case; civil trials in California only require nine jurors to be in agreement.

The panel of jurors - six men and six women - was a decidedly Hollywood bunch. One of the jurors said he is an animator for "The Simpsons," while another helps coordinate movie shoots in public parks. A pair of actresses and a former voice-over artist were eliminated from the jury pool.

Reeves, who stars in the upcoming remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," testified early on. He remained in the courtroom throughout the five-day trial, occasionally conferring with his lawyers and signing autographs in the hallway.

It's award season in Hollywood and for many Los Angeles celebrities, that also means it's freebie time.

Nominees that miss out on the big prize might get some consolation from generous gift bags, containing tens of thousands of dollars' worth of products.

Gift bags are not sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Distinctive Assets, a Los Angeles-based marketing firm puts together the 'Everyone Wins' bags for nominees in the 'Best Actor,' 'Best Actress,' 'Best Supporting Actor,' 'Best Supporting Actress' and 'Best Directors' categories.

Items include everything from skincare products to jewellery and holidays.

In 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sued Distinctive Assets and the case was settled amicably.

The settlement stated that the Academy and the Oscars have no relationship with Distinctive Asset's offerings and the marketing company would not use the Academy's trademarks.  

Just before the 2006 Oscars, the IRS flagged up the bags as taxable income, adding those who accepted them would have to pay up.

A few months later, the Academy and the IRS reached a settlement on undisclosed taxes from bags given out in previous years.

The Academy also announced it would no longer be giving out the giftbags, having already quietly voted to stop the practice. Marketing companies have continued to provide gifts to celebrities.

Janice O'Leary, the Los Angeles editor of the luxury lifestyle magazine 'Robb Report,' says award season is always an exciting time in LA.

"It is a wild weekend in LA," she says.

"The energy here is really high and you see this uptick in luxury, all over LA, over this weekend and even for the past few weeks, you feel that energy.

"People are driving their fancy cars, backing them out of the garage, taking them to the award ceremonies and viewing parties. The Peninsula is unrolling some Rolls Royce's, the Waldorf Astoria has a few Aston Martins on hand for a few VIP guests."

This year, celebrities are also being offered holidays, including a 12-night trip for two to Tanzania by International Expeditions.

MURAKAMI CELEBRATED

Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami was celebrated Thursday night (3 April) with a black tie dinner and entertainment by Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.

The Brooklyn Ball kicked off Murakami, a major retrospective of the artist's works runs from 5 April through 13 July 2008. Louis Vuitton sponsored the evening and featured a street vendor shopping market, selling LV purses, wallets and other products as well as canvases created by Murakami especially for the event.

Attending the gala were celebrities and socialites, artists and fashionistas. Names included models Eva Herzigova and Chicho Aoshima, tennis all-star John McEnroe, actress Kristin Davis of "Sex and the City" and architect Frank Geary.

Louis Vuitton Artistic Director Marc Jacobs described the evening's event to AP Entertainment News exclusively on the red carpet.

"It's an event of fashion, art and music," he said. "I'm a designer for Louis Vuitton, the artistic director. I collaborated with a great contemporary artist Takashi Murakami who has also collaborated with Kanye West who is performing tonight. I think, it's very representative of the idea of art and people sort of not feeling culturally unable to appreciate art because they weren't schooled in it. I mean, contemporary art is inclusive."

Jacobs also explained the idea of having a Louis Vuitton shop inside the museum, with 10 New York style street vendors real LV merchandise, not copycats, and how this related to the company's crackdown on counterfeit merchandise.

Because to see people shopping was kind of a performance art in a way and to be shopping within a retrospective for the pieces that were created in collaboration with the artist, it's just kind of this what came first thing. Jacobs, who went into rehab a year ago March (12 March 2007), told AP Entertainment News exclusively that he was feeling fine and in great shape.

"I feel great. Yeah. Good. I feel terrific. Yeah," said Jacobs cheerfully.

Guest of honour, artist Takashi Murakami, explained the evening as being a new beginning.

"It looks like kind of a new era because art comes to entertainment. Like the first time people mention for the cooperation of fashion and art, but maybe in the near future, this is the kind of new entertainment," he said.

Murakami added that he is a great fan of both Kanye West and Marc Jacobs: "Kanye West, about his fashion, he's cool. Marc Jacobs is genius, genius," he said.

Victoria's Secret model Selita Eubanks summed up the evening as a fusion of high fashion, pop art and rap music. "It's kind of made this huge circle. All just kind of makes sense. You know, It's just a very sexy night," she said.

Meanwhile, rapper Kanye West managed to avoid the paparazzi completely by arriving late and entering through another door.

STORYLINE:

David Beckham, the most widely recognised football player on the planet - fashion icon, tabloid fixture, marketing giant - announced a deal on Thursday to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Beckham turned down a two-year contract extension from Real Madrid, where his fading skills have left him on the bench for most of this season.

The Galaxy didn't say exactly what they'll pay him, but floated a figure of 250 million dollars in salary and commercial endorsements over the five years of his contract.

In other words, his move could be worth 1 million dollars a week.

The MLS season opens in April but Beckham is not expected to join the team until August. His four-year contract with Madrid expires at the end of this season.

His Galaxy deal was negotiated over 10 days by major entertainment industry players Simon Fuller, creator of "American Idol," and Creative Artists Agency, home to some of Hollywood's biggest actors.

Fuller manages both Beckham and his pop star wife, Victoria, former member of all-female pop group The Spice Girls.

Victoria Beckham has expressed a desire to launch a Hollywood career.

He opened a soccer academy at the Galaxy's stadium complex last year, and she was photographed house-hunting in the area.

The couple have two sons, Brooklyn and Romeo.

Drawing paparazzi like movie stars, Beckham and his wife regularly find their way onto tabloid and magazine covers.

David is the epitome of the modern celebrity-athlete - he's David Beckham Inc., a multinational corporation with links to Pepsi,Gillette, Motorola and Adidas.

The United States is the last - and biggest - market where Beckham's cult of personality has little sway.

A superstar whose movements have convulsed Asian capitals and helped sell millions of European tabloids has been able to walk American streets in relative anonymity.

In Los Angeles, Beckham will be raising the profile of an average team in a soccer league that has little respect overseas.

The Beckham effect was felt immediately: The Galaxy sold 1,000 new season tickets on Thursday.

The team averages about 22,000-24,000 fans in its 27,000-seat stadium in suburban Carson, although attendance was down last season when the Galaxy missed the playoffs.

Already in the works is a 2008 Galaxy tour of Asia, where Beckham is wildly popular. A new team logo will be unveiled this summer, and the Galaxy's owner is nearing a deal to slap a prime sponsor's name on its jerseys.

Beckham, who has failed to win any major titles in three seasons in Madrid, said the time was right for a change.

PAPARAZZI PHOTOGRAPHS, LETTERS AND ARTWORK FROM FAMED STUDIO 54 UP FOR AUCTION IN FLORIDA

Those long-ago nights at Studio 54, the famed nightclub with a legacy greater than its lifespan, are being relived as a trove of memorabilia from the iconic 1970s funhouse goes up for bids.

A stash of paparazzi photographs, letters and artwork from the New York club's A-list guests and other mementos kept by the late Studio 54 co-owner Steve Rubell are being auctioned off Saturday (19 Jan.) in West Palm Beach.

The items give a fascinating glimpse of life at 54: Fran Lebowitz shoulder-to-shoulder with Andy Warhol. A stone-faced Frank Sinatra staring off in the distance. Diana Ross, arms flaying on the dance floor. Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Cher and on and on and on.

Rubell's partner, Bill Hamilton, finally decided to part with the treasures, more than 23 years after his death. The boxes of newspaper clippings, photographs and everything else had spent decades in their apartment on West 55th Street in Manhattan, where Hamilton still lives.

Giving up the items was hard, said Hamilton, who was too young to ever enjoy Studio 54 himself. But getting a final look at the photos, he was reminded of Rubell's generosity and how much fun he helped create.

Rubell and co-founder Ian Shrager opened Studio 54 in 1977 and sold it in 1981, after they "got out of camp," as they called prison, where they served time on federal income tax evasion charges. It continued operating under different management for years afterward.

The club's memories are captured in hand-scrawled notes from its guests, such as one from Farrah Fawcett to Rubell that says "Dearest Steve, Thank you for a fabulous weekend. You made it work!" Or the telegram from Yves St. Laurent to Rubell, inviting him to a black-tie celebration of his perfume Opium.

Most of the dozens and dozens of photographs were taken by news outlets or paparazzi and it's not known how many copies exist. But there's a handful of one-of-a-kind Polaroids shot by Warhol, making them the most valuable of the bunch.

Altogether, the collection broadens the public portrait of Rubell, known to many younger people only through Mike Myers' portrayal of him in the movie "54."

"I'm left with the belief that there was an energy with the way Rubell would put together these groups of people every night and this energy comes out in these photographs," explained Baca.

Among the pricier objects on the auction block is a metal sculpture by Warhol of dollar signs, which was given to Rubell, and is estimated to fetch up to $50,000. There's also a Warhol drawing of Studio 54 drink tickets, estimated to go for up to $150,000, and a portratit of Rubell by Michael Vollbracht given to the club impresario on his 35th birthday.

Also being sold are drink tickets, posters, invitations and even Rubell's personal address book. And, perhaps most interestingly, the key to the fortress itself, Rubell's tattered front-door reservation book. It is filled with gads of famous names, notations on whether the guest's bill would be footed by the club, and the faint sound of disco-fueled memories frozen in time.
