US First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Qatar on Monday as part of a two-country Mideast tour.

She plans to visit a crucial air base in America's war against the Islamic State group and give a speech on the importance of girl's education.

Obama touched down in Doha, the Qatari capital, on Monday night, the state-run Qatar News Agency reported, without elaborating.

She is scheduled to give a speech on Wednesday on her 'Let Girls Learn' initiative at the 2015 World Innovation Summit for Education, sponsored by the Qatar Foundation.

From Qatar, Obama will travel to Jordan and visit a school supported by the US Agency for International Development with Queen Rania.

She also plans to visit Petra, an ancient city hewn from rose-coloured rock that's a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Obama is travelling without the president, her daughters or other immediate family members on this week's trip.

American rapper, songwriter and entrepreneur Will.i.am attended the the exclusive World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Swiss town of Davos this week.

After meeting with some of the world's richest people and attending panels, he held a press conference Friday (23 JAN. 2015) afternoon.

"I never really looked at myself as the one percent because I have always been poor," he said. "Then I realized there is a guy who goes by the name of Naveen Jain from India who was poorer than me and now Naveen Jain is really successful in life. And what that showed me in life that I need to go back and tell the kids in the neighborhoods like mine, that they tell you on the news of the one percent versus the 99 percent, it's not that there is like a wall that means you can't be a part of it. There are skill sets for you to learn, it is all on the Internet."

The Blackeyed Peas front man came to the resort town to promote his i.am.angel Foundation, a charity that aims to change young people's lives through "education, inspiration and opportunity."

"If you encourage kids, whether you are poor or not, to be a provider and you give that kid responsibility nine times out of 10 they will pull through," he said. "You have got to encourage them, you have got to make them accountable, tell them the truth about the world, the way it is configured, and point out the folks that are there to help because there are people there to help, there are tools there to help them. You have just to got to make them accountable. I had people that made me accountable, and they were my teachers Miss Montes, Mr. Wright, they encouraged me."
