JOHN LEGEND ON TRUMP'S TRAVEL BAN: 'HE IS AN ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY'

Celebrities arrived to the Producer's Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday (28JAN2017) night as protests sparked around the country in response to President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The executive order bans legal U.S. residents and visaholders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.

"We support the protests," said John Legend on the red carpet before the PGA ceremony. "We donated to ACLU today and we are grateful that they were in court in Brooklyn defending the rights of immigrants and refugees to come to this country. And we reject Donald Trump's message of fear and hate and we encourage everybody out there to speak out against it. Call your Congress people, support ACLU, support IRC and all those organizations that are speaking out for immigrants and refugees. And we're going to defeat him. He is an enemy of democracy. He's an enemy of freedom. He's an enemy of inclusion and he's going to lose."

Legend, who participated in the Women's March along with his wife Chrissy Teigen, said he will do whatever he can to help the protesters.

"Chrissy marched in D.C. I marched at Sundance and we're going to do whatever we can to resist his evil regime," he said.

Legend was on hand to support "La La Land," which he appeared in and served as an executive producer on. The retro musical reaped a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and was also vying for top honors at the PGAs.

A protest at John F. Kennedy airport, where 12 refugees were detained Saturday, swelled to more than 2,000 people, including some celebrities. Protesters also converged in Newark, New Jersey, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

"Lion" star and Oscar nominee Dev Patel called the travel ban "heartbreaking."

"I mean it's completely heartbreaking to be honest. I just flew in from India yesterday and to arrive to such devastating news of such a divisive nature, it's terrible. It's heartbreaking," he said.

Trump's order immediately suspended a program that last year resettled to the U.S. roughly 85,000 people displaced by war, political oppression, hunger and religious prejudice.

He indefinitely blocked all those fleeing Syria, where a civil war has displaced millions of people, and imposed a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations.

FEW HUNDRED ATTEND RAPPER'S GANG SUMMIT IN LOS ANGELES

Rapper The Game says he was moved to call together Los Angeles gang members for an anti-violence summit because he wants to help create a safer world for his children.

"I have children and I want (them) to grow up in a better world than the one I can see with my own eyes," said The Game after Sunday's summit in South Los Angeles.

An overflow crowd of several hundred gathered at a community center to hear pleas for peace from current and former gang members, entertainers, activists and preachers from the Nation Of Islam.

"You know too many people want to say we do this now and then change the direction as soon as we do one thing. No. What we do next is we do this again and we continue to do it until everybody gets onboard. You know it's like a bus going through the city, a bus of love and a bus of positivity. We want to keep the doors open. We want everybody to get on the bus. And this love and this positivity that we're preaching and change were about to bring about is free admission. All you got to do is get on the ride with us," The Game said during an interview.

Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck shook hands with The Game outside the venue in a show of unity. Beck said the meeting was a "great first step" in the right direction toward curbing violence, especially considering the police shootings Sunday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"I'm out here to support a message of anti-violence being put forward by members of the rap community, the hip-hop community, members of the faith community and some very, very significant community leaders. You know all of us recognize that this community, our community, is far too violent and we want to stop the violence, we want to stop the killings and you know then we can talk about some of the other issues. But first we've got to make this a safe community," Beck said.

Three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers investigating a report of a man with an assault rifle were killed Sunday, less than two weeks after a black man was fatally shot by police in the city during a confrontation that sparked nightly protests that reverberated nationwide.

"Of course officers, civilians, any life lost is a major deterioration of us as a people," said The Game of the shooting. "I don't like it and this is why we are here taking initiative and trying to change it. So you know peace and love and prayers go out to those families, but that's a tragedy as well as all lives."

The Game, born Jayceon Terrell Taylor, fought back tears as he recounted the recent shooting death of a former gang member he called Spanky. The pair grew up together in foster care in nearby Compton, he said.

"Me in my foster home, I was the only black dude in my foster home. I grew up with Mexicans only. And you know if a tear falls it's because ... it's because one of the cats that I grew up with in a foster home with, Calvin. His name was Spanky, he was from Playboy Gangster. Straight Mexican. That was more my brother than my own brothers," said The Game to the crowd.

"L.A., this is one of the biggest, best cities in the world. Not just the nation of America, in the world. And from this day out, politicians, mayors, president of the United States, all of them are going to be held accountable, everybody. But before we do that, we've got to hold ourselves accountable as people," said the 36-year-old multi-platinum selling rapper.

The Game put the word out last week on his active Instagram account, inviting leaders of the Crips, Bloods and other street gangs to come together for "Time To Unite: United Hoods + Gangs Nation." Dozens of gang members, some sporting red and blue colors, heeded the call and filed peacefully into the building to hear more than a dozen speakers. The neighborhood a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles has a large black population and has been plagued by random violence.

Aurora Hudson praised the decision to shine a light on "the brutality in our neighborhoods." The 25-year-old came to the meet-up from her home just blocks away and called it a positive experience.

"A lot of times when you look at the media and you look at the news you see different things. You don't see anyone talking about OK how people are uniting against gang violence, but it happens and it is important. And of course it is important for us as black people, they stop killing us - the police. But as well we stop killing each other and that's the important thing too. And if we unite as a group and end gang violence I think we can get a lot more things done in the community as well," said Hudson.

Veteran gang interventionist Alex Sanchez urged unity between Latino and black community members. Radio personality Big Boy, recording artist will.i.am and rappers Shorty, Problem and Bad Lucc were among the entertainers in the crowd. Security was provided by the Nation of Islam and there wasn't a big police presence at the summit.

Men need to have a "much-needed conversation" about their influence on young people and how to serve as better role models, The Game wrote on Instagram, where he has 6.6 million followers.

Earlier this month, The Game and fellow rapper Snoop Dogg led a peaceful march to Los Angeles police headquarters, where they met with the mayor and police chief and urged improved relations between authorities and minority communities.

The rappers are among many activists and celebrities calling for change following the police-related killings of black men nationwide and the shooting deaths of five police officers in Dallas by a lone gunman motivated by racial hatred.

ASHTON AND KUTCHER IN ISRAEL FOR FUNERAL OF KABBALAH TEACHER

Hollywood couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have attended the funeral of a Kabbalah teacher to the stars in Israel.on Wednesday (18 SEPT. 2013.)

Kutcher and Kunis were dressed, like the other mourners, in white, a symbolic Kabbalah color.

Rabbi Philip Berg founded the Kabbalah Centre in Los Angeles more than 40 years ago. The center announced he died aged 86 this week.

The centre has grown into an international organization that has drawn celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and his ex-wife, Demi Moore.

Kutcher wore a baseball cap with a red B on it. He and Kunis wore sunglasses.

Kutcher and Kunis were former co-stars and a fictional couple on the hit sitcom "That '70s Show" before they began dating officially.

Fashion designer Donna Karan also attended the funeral, which was held in Safed, the spiritual center for Kabbalah, and the home of the Jewish mystics who defined it six hundred years ago.

Though Kabbalah is rooted in Judaism, its message has in recent years become popular to people of all beliefs.

Bill Cosby has replaced the law firm overseeing civil litigation around the country linked to accusations he drugged and molested women.

Liner LLP, known for its work in entertainment law, is replacing lawyers with the powerhouse litigation firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt confirmed Monday (11 JULY 2016.) Both firms are based in Los Angeles.

Litigation department chairwoman Angela Agrusa will now represent Cosby in the defamation and sex-assault lawsuits. Several women have sued Cosby for branding them liars in lawsuits filed in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and California. Cosby has countersued some of them.

Agrusa, in a statement, said she did not want to try the cases in the media. She said Cosby "deserve(s) representation to ensure that justice does not yield to news cycles and soundbites."

"Trying Mr. Cosby in a court of public opinion — as imbalanced media coverage promotes — runs directly counter to our judicial system's most fundamental guarantees of fairness under the law," she said.

The Liner firm currently represents singer Blake Shelton in a defamation case against a celebrity magazine. The firm also defended the doctor charged with overprescribing painkillers to the late model Anna Nicole Smith.

Quinn Emanuel may stay involved in the criminal sex-assault case heading to trial in suburban Philadelphia, Wyatt said. The firm's Christopher Tayback last week argued for the charges to be dismissed or for Cosby to be granted a new preliminary hearing to weigh the evidence. The trial judge denied the motion.

Cosby, 78, has been spending millions in an aggressive bid to stay out of prison, salvage his reputation and avoid legal judgments that could threaten his fortune.

Celebrities gathered at the Manhattan offices of the brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald Wednesday (11 SEPT. 2013) to take part in the firm's annual Charity Day on 9/11.

Among the personalities they came in and signed on to the board set up for participants was Kyle McLachlan. He said while the memory of the September 11 attacks still haunts him, he takes pride in looking at the memorial and the rising One World Trade Center building that replaced the fallen twin towers.

"It's like you said before, people get emotional. It's like every time I watch - I hear the Star-Spangled Banner or I watch the flag, even at a football game when they unfurl it there's a sense of pride that comes through and I think the memorial is just the indomitable spirit of not only America but just the ability of humans just to rise and get past a terrible tragedy like that and move forward."

The Cantor Fitzgerald Charity Day in Manhattan is an annual fundraiser to commemorate the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald brokerage employees who lost their lives in the attacks. Celebrities come to the brokerage now in Midtown Manhattan and talk on the phone with people who want to make a trade via the firm and get them to donate to their personal charities. Cantor Fitzgerald says that 100-percent of the money raised during the day goes to more than 100 charities worldwide.

Former athlete and current star of the reality TV show "Keeping up with the Kardashians" star Bruce Jenner said he came to represent his whole Jenner/Kardashian clan. "This morning I was listening to the news at - I think it's 8:46 - whatever it is - that's when the first plane hit. I think everybody in the whole country takes that moment just to remember what happened and my family's been very charitable throughout the year in support of so many different charities that coming here in supporting this one's really important to everybody - not just me."

For some, the attacks remain very present despite the passage of 12 years. Magician David Blaine spoke of the horror he remembers unfolding before him real time as he looked out the window of his Manhattan apartment in time to see the first plane hit the twin towers. "I have a telescope so I literally - when it first happened we didn't know it was a terrorist attack and I was watching and I was seeing people jumping out, which was just awful: couples holding hands and jumping out and that's why I think this is an amazing charity because they really do give all of the money to the cause."

"Law and Order" star Kathryn Erbe broke into tears as she talked of seeing the World Trade Center memorial lights brighten up the sky. "Where I live in Brooklyn when I walk out my door to walk my dogs at night before I go to bed I can see the memorial - those lights, which I feel, (starts to cry), is one of the most beautiful memorials there is. Sorry, it's really emotional. It's very, very emotional and so I find myself just saying prayers for many days leading up to this day and it was just such a sad time, just a horribly tragic thing at and yet I also remember how we came together as a city."

'BFG' STARS DISCUSS BRITAIN'S EU REFERENDUM

The intense debate over Britain's future in or out of the European Union came to Hollywood Tuesday (21 June 2016) as the stars of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" weighed in on the high-stakes issue at their film's Los Angeles premiere.

Academy Award winner Mark Rylance expressed his concerns about the EU referendum while remembering slain British lawmaker Jo Cox.

"It's a very big week and it's been really tragic to see the death of that wonderful woman, you know who such a compassionate campaigner. And just to see there are things about Europe that worry me. There are trade agreements. This horrible TTIP agreement is a terrible thing. I don't know why Obama is backing it. It gives corporations the right to sue us if we change our minds as a people. It's not democratic. But on the other hand, all the guys who are backing separation are so awful about refugees. They're all rather nasty businessman, like Rupert Murdoch. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. People don't know who they are and they feel betrayed by the government so have really sold out to business too often, too long. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"Downton Abbey" actress Penelope Wilton said leaving would be a "disaster."

"I want to stay in Europe with all my heart. I want to stay in Europe. I think it would be a disaster. 'BFG' STARS DISCUSS BRITAIN'S EU REFERENDUM

The intense debate over Britain's future in or out of the European Union came to Hollywood Tuesday (21 June 2016) as the stars of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" weighed in on the high-stakes issue at their film's Los Angeles premiere.

Academy Award winner Mark Rylance expressed his concerns about the EU referendum while remembering slain British lawmaker Jo Cox.

"It's a very big week and it's been really tragic to see the death of that wonderful woman, you know who such a compassionate campaigner. And just to see there are things about Europe that worry me. There are trade agreements. This horrible TTIP agreement is a terrible thing. I don't know why Obama is backing it. It gives corporations the right to sue us if we change our minds as a people. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"Downton Abbey" actress Penelope Wilton said leaving would be a "disaster."

It's been 15 years since two planes slammed into New York City's World Trade Center, causing the collapse of the two buildings.

Louis C.K., who lived in New York at the time of the September 11th attacks says for him, it might as well be yesterday.

The comedian spoke Monday (12 SEPT) at the Cantor Fitzgerald Charity day. The financial firm, which lost 658 employees in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, marks the anniversary by raising funds for different charities. The event is a draw for celebrities who come in each year, representing charities they'd like to raise funds for.

"Twin Peaks" actor Kyle MacLachlan says if anything, the attacks bother him more this year than in recent history.

"For while I think there was a lull. JUDGE REFUSES BRAD PITT'S REQUEST TO SEAL CUSTODY FILINGS

A judge on Wednesday (07 DEC.) rejected Brad Pitt's request to seal details about custody arrangements in his divorce from Angelina Jolie Pitt.

Los Angeles Superior Court Richard J. Burdge Jr. denied Pitt's request in a brief written order that states the filing did not meet the requirements for sealing details at this time. Pitt had sought to seal details of his custody dispute with Jolie Pitt at an emergency hearing, but Burdge declined to hear the petition on an expedited basis.

Pitt's motion came two days after the release of a custody agreement that he and his estranged wife reached in late October. The agreement calls for the actor to have visitation with his children under the guidance of a therapist.

Pitt intends to seek temporary custody orders soon, and his filing states that he wanted those documents sealed to protect the children's privacy. He was also seeking the sealing of any custody-related filings.

"I am extremely concerned that if court records regarding custody are not sealed, information contained therein will cause irreparable damage to our children's privacy rights," Pitt wrote in a sworn declaration filed Wednesday.

Pitt's attorney Gary Fishbein declined comment after the hearing.

Jolie Pitt filed for divorce in September and currently has primary custody of their six children.

The divorce filing came days after a disagreement broke out on private flight ferrying the actors and their children from France to Los Angeles. Pitt was accused of being abusive toward his 15-year-old son during the flight, but investigations by child welfare officials and the FBI were closed with no charges being filed against the actor.

After filing for divorce, Jolie Pitt's attorney said it was done "for the health of the family."

Custody has been the primary issue in the divorce. Jolie Pitt is seeking sole custody of the children, while Pitt is seeking joint custody. A final agreement will be part of the couple's divorce judgment when it is entered.

California law favors joint custody, although details about custody arrangements are rarely made public in celebrity divorce cases.

Jolie Pitt's attorney Laura Wasser said the actress does not oppose sealing details of the pair's custody arrangements, but Pitt's attorneys did not consult with them before filing the motion Wednesday.

Pitt and Jolie were married for two years and together for 12 years after becoming close while filming 2005's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

It was 12 years ago but to Jaime Foxx, 9/11 seems like just yesterday. Foxx says he was in New York the weekend before but flew out the day before the attacks.

Today, the Oscar-winning actor says it's time to look forward, as long as we remember to keep the victims of the strikes in mind. "We showed up last night and drove past Ground Zero. All of those emotions rushed back. I think this is the day for all of us to put away all of our differences and really understand what America is about and the freedoms we are allowed and this is the greatest place in the world to live. We must protect that and wrap our arms around all of these people metaphorically and let him know that we still care. That's the most important thing."

Foxx spoke at the Cantor Fitzgerald Charity Day in Manhattan Wednesday (11 SEPT. 2013.) It's an annual fundraiser to commemorate the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald brokerage employees who lost their lives in the attacks. Celebrities come to the brokerage now in Midtown Manhattan and talk on the phone with people who want to make a trade via the firm and get them to donate to their personal charities. Cantor Fitzgerald says that 100-percent of the money raised during the day goes to more than 100 charities worldwide.

Billy Crystal was also there and remembered where he was on 9/11.

"I had just left (New York) after nursing my closest relative, and uncle, back to health for four months and moved him into a building directly across from the towers. He was a D-Day veteran who it seemed horrible things and was on the phone with me as the first tower came down and my daughter was living on the Lower East Side as an NYU student and she should she's the one that woke us up to tell us what had happened and we watched - as we all did in horror - as this mass murder occurred on television."

Julianne Moore says she was at the Toronto International Film Festival when the planes hit the Twin Towers but was deeply affected by the attacks.

"It's been a long time now I think. So everyone's reaction is somewhat different but it was a terrible, terrible day and it was such a ridiculous and tragic loss of life for so many people so it's nice to participate in something like this which is really about remembering them, honoring them and giving back."

Cantor Fitzgerald says to date, Charity Day has raised about $89 million dollars (U.S.) from around the world.

CELEBRITIES REACT TO PROP 8 PROTEST

Celebrities reacted to a massive protest taking place just a few blocks away from the BAFTA LA Awards Thursday evening (6 NOV 2008).

For the second night in a row, protesters took to the streets in California to voice their anger at the passage of Proposition 8, an anti-gay marriage initiative on the ballot in Tuesday's election.

Actor Sean Penn said it would be a good idea to go out and join the protestors.

Actress Patricia Clarkson, mirrored Penn's comments by saying after the awards were over everyone should lend their support to the protest.

Meanwhile 'W' star Richard Dreyfuss, said he thought the protest was a good thing and that's what is great about being American, the freedom of people to protest.

More than 1,000 people blocked traffic.

Television cameras showed one protester jumping on top of a police car at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland.

He was quickly wrestled to the ground by police and handcuffed.

The rally broke into several separate groups as midnight approached hours after the marching began, and protesters were still walking amid traffic on Santa Monica and San Vicente Boulevards in West Hollywood.

ANGELINA JOLIE VISITS SYRIAN REFUGEE CAMP IN JORDAN

United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres and UNHCR's Special Envoy, actress Angelina Jolie, visited the Zaatari camp near the Syrian border on Thursday (20 JUNE 2013) to mark World Refugee Day.

The day was established by the United Nations to honour the refugees who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.

Jolie said the Syrian civil war is the world's most acute humanitarian crisis and called on world leaders to make diplomatic efforts to end it succeed.

The actor spoke at Jordan's largest camp for Syrian refugees, which she toured as special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency.

"1.6 million people have poured out of Syria, with nothing but the clothes on their back, and more than half them are children. They have left behind a country in which millions of people are displaced, suffering hunger, deprivation and fear," she said.

Jolie is returning to her humanitarian work after announcing last month that she had her breasts removed after discovering she has an inherited genetic mutation that puts her at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Her visit to Zaatari camp was her first visit public appearance with the United Nations refugee agency since the double mastectomy.

Jolie said that by the end of this year, "half of Syria's population - 10 million people - will be in desperate need of food, shelter and assistance."

"You must find common ground," she pleaded.

Jordan hosts more than half a million displaced Syrians, including 185,000 in Zaatari, which has become Jordan's fourth largest populated city.

Inaugurated last July, Zaatari is the world's second largest refugee camp, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The largest according to the UNHCR is Dadaab camp in Kenya, which houses 463,000 Somali refugees.

Regional media reports this week suggesting that Hezbollah activists are deploying near the Jordanian border to help President Bashar Assad regain control of the southern province of Daraa - which has been a lifeline for arms shipments to rebels seeking to topple him - sent jitters across Jordan.

Officials said that security was immediately increased, with more Jordanian soldiers deployed along the border with Syria.

NAOMI CAMPBELL ANNOUNCES CHARITY FASHION SHOW IN AID OF UK FLOOD VICTIMS

Supermodel Naomi Campbell announced a charity fashion show Monday (10SEP07), to raise money for the victims of this year's floods in the UK.

The star has enlisted the help of fellow supermodels Yasmin Le Bon, Jodie Kidd and Elle Macpherson, as well as British designers like Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and the Burberry label.

The event, "Fashion for Relief" will take place at the finale of London Fashion Week, at the city's Natural History Museum on September 20.

Speaking from a press conference in London on Monday Campbell said:

"I wasn't in for the UK the floods that happened this July, but the images I saw on TV and in the newspapers were very lasting and powerful. And whilst the weather has improved in August and great progress has been made to clear up the aftermath, there is no denying what damage this has done and its estimated cost has gone into billions," Campbell explained.

"We wanted to do something to help all those affected by the terrible UK floods our way. The evening of September 20th, marking the grand finale to London Fashion Week 2007, we are hosting a spectacular fashion show at the British Fashion Council tent at the London History Museum," Campbell announced.

The flooding that hit Yorkshire and Gloucestershire over the summer is estimated to have cost 3 billion pounds.

Iconic British designer Westwood called on the government to divert funds.

"And by the way, it would be really nice if the government could be honest for once and they could say 'look, we've spent all your tax on Trident, we want to spend lots, lots more tax on identity cards which will be of no use to anybody and we've just had an incredible windfall from Vodafone and we're actually quite rich, and just once we might do something. A similar fundraising event took place in America following Hurricane Katrina.

Campbell says she hopes the fashion community can continue to give help when it's needed:

"I think it would be nice if in the fashion community we could continue doing this. I mean, we don't want tragedy, we don't wish tragedy to happen, but tragedy does come, and I think, you know, that everyone looks at us like, as Alex says, as having a very glamorous lifestyle in a very glamorous world. Well, like you've got your musicians that give back, your actors, and you do Comic Relief, you have these concerts - I think this is our way of giving back, in the fashion community."

Campbell recently spent five days cleaning floors in the New York City Sanitation Department garage, a community service punishment for throwing a cell phone at her maid over a pair of missing jeans.

Since then, the fashion icon has been trying to distance herself from a reputation for volatility and tantrum throwing.

Campbell was discovered in Covent Garden at the age of 15.

She was the first black model to appear on the covers of Time magazine and French and British Vogue.

Fashion Relief has been organised in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Great Britain.

Special edition T- shirts will also be sold in aid of the cause.

CELEBRITIES AT TONY AWARDS REACT TO SHOOTING IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA

The 2016 Tony Awards were expected to be all about "Hamilton"-- the Broadway hit musical nominated 16 times. But Sunday's shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida that left 50 dead and at least 53 injured, cast a shadow on the ceremony Sunday night as nominees and presenters expressed shock and sadness over the massacre and sent prayers for the victims and their families.

On the red carpet at the Beacon Theatre in New York City Sunday night, many in the Broadway community showed their support for the shooting victims by wearing silver ribbons. Some-- including "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda-- also wore rainbow symbols supporting the LGBT community.

Miranda said while the shooting victims were on his mind, the Tony's and the arts need to be celebrated during dark times.

"Today's a day of tragedy so, at the same time I'm in a room of people who made new art and new music this year and I'm happy to be celebrating that and I feel like we need it more than ever. It's heavy in my mind and in my heart and if I go up there tonight it'll probably be in my mouth, " Miranda said.

Legendary Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber was at the awards show representing his new show, "School of Rock-- the Musical." Webber said he wanted to get involved because of the nominated show's message on the uniting power of music.

"It's a fantastic story about the empowering force of music and how music can change everybody's lives especially children. I think even tonight with the tragic events that we just heard about, one of the reasons I really wanted to do it is that music cuts through everything. No child was ever born to hate and really school of rock is what music can do for people and for children and a force for the good," Webber said.

Many stars on the carpet were still processing the events of the day. A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun opened fire inside the Pulse Orlando nightclub before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, police say. The attack left at least 50 people dead, making it the worst mass shooting in American history.

"This is a celebratory event, a celebratory night but this is a very deeply somber night, and I think it's a somber night on a lot of levels and in a lot of communities. And this is another example of another hate crime and another unnecessary crime... and another unnecessary crime with gun violence. It's truly devastating," said actress Judith Light.

Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan were at the ceremony to support their show based on Estefan's life, "Get on Your Feet." But the shooting tempered the day.

"It's painful, it's horrific. When I woke up I thought, 'Oh lord, what else? You know every day we're facing something crazy and the world that we're handing over to our kids... all we can do is try to raise a new generation with a lot of love and have them learn more love than hate. We need to get away from violence in general and maybe that will make a difference."

The Tony telecast was altered in the wake of the deadly shooting as producers dedicated the show to the friends and families of the victims. There was also a last minute change to a "Hamilton" performance when the cast of the show dropped their Revolutionary War muskets as props. The musical about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton instead pantomimed the use of the rifles, according to a show spokesman.

A lawyer for Roger Ailes denied Tuesday (19 JULY 2016) that the embattled Fox News Channel chief executive sexually harassed network star Megyn Kelly.

Susan Estrich's statement came amid a swirl of contradictory reports that Ailes had been ousted as head of the influential network he built from scratch, that he hadn't been ousted, and that he was negotiating a departure.

Attributing anonymous sources, New York magazine reported on Tuesday that Kelly had told investigators working for Fox News Channel parent 21st Century Fox that Ailes had sexually harassed her when she was a reporter at Fox 10 years ago.

"Roger Ailes has never sexually harassed Megyn Kelly," Estrich said. "In fact, he has spent much of the last decade promoting and helping her achieve the stardom she earned, for which she has repeatedly and publicly thanked him."

A former Fox anchor, Gretchen Carlson, alleged in a lawsuit that Ailes had forced her out following a meeting where he told her that "you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago." The contract of Carlson, who said there was an atmosphere of harassment at Fox, was not renewed when it ended last month.

Ailes denied Carlson's charges. Since the lawsuit was filed July 6, a succession of Fox employees have come forward to publicly defend him, but they notably did not include Kelly. The prime-time host's profile increased dramatically in the past year following attacks on her by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Kelly's agent did not return a request for comment on Tuesday.

A handful of other women have come forward alleging that Ailes had pressured them for sex, their stories all predating the start of Fox News Channel in 1996. 21st Century Fox hired an outside law firm to look into allegations against Ailes and New York magazine reported on Monday that company chiefs Rupert Murdoch and his sons, James and Lachlan, had concluded that the media executive had to go.

That led to a series of stories late Tuesday that he'd been ousted, even the circulation of a document supposedly outlining an exit agreement. 21st Century Fox said that "Roger is at work. The review is ongoing. And the only agreement that is in place is his existing employment agreement."

At stake is an extraordinary career in media and politics. At Rupert Murdoch's behest, Ailes started a news network that catered to conservatives who felt ignored by the mainstream media. By 2002, it had eclipsed the original cable news network, CNN, in ratings and has never looked back. Fox is now dominating all of the other networks in this week's coverage of the Republican National Convention.

Fox News is a huge success financially, by some measures providing a quarter of its parent company's revenues. That had given Ailes power in some corporate scrapes he had with Rupert Murdoch's sons.

There was some evidence this campaign that Fox's influence with Republicans had been waning, since the network had gotten into battles with Trump. But in recent weeks Trump has more frequently turned to Fox as a way to reach the Republican audience he needs for election.

VERSACE'S FIRST FASHION SHOW IN CHINA

Italian luxury Fashion house Versace held its first fashion show in China near Beijing Tiananmen Square on Friday (14 NOV 2008) raising more than $100,000 for charity.

A host of celebrities including Hollywood action star Jet Li attended the event which was held in the prestigious Legation Quarter home to the former US Embassy in Imperial China.

The show was held together with a charity auction with Jet Li's One Foundation to raise funds for victims of the devastating earthquake in May which took place in China's Sichuan province.

Despite a looming global recession, Versace says it is optimistic that sales will continue to be strong and believes that demand for luxury brands Asia will help it ride out the financial storm.

Versace is investing $56.5 million (US) dollars to strengthen its presence in Asia and is opening 11 new stores this year - nine in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and China, and two in Europe, including a home furnishings store in Milan.

Using only Chinese models on a circular runway which is a replica to the one it has in Milan, Versace unveiled its 2009 Spring/Summer collection to over 900 of Asia's celebrities, socialites and officials.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON MAKES RARE PUBLIC APPEARANCE AT AMFAR GALA AFTER DIVORCE NEWS

Scarlett Johansson made a rare public appearance since news broke that she is getting divorced.

The actress, along with fashion designer Donatella Versace, was honored by amfAR Wednesday (8 FEB. 2017) in New York at their annual gala ahead of New York Fashion Week.

The AIDS research organization honored both women for their longstanding support in the fight against the deadly disease.

Versace had a quick response when asked how she reacted to the honor.

"I say yay," the designer said as she waved her arms in the air.

Johansson posed for photographers, and walked past a line of television reporters as she rushed inside.

She did speak briefly to the Associated Press about this evening's honor.

"I'm deeply, deeply touched - really deeply touched to be here," Johansson said.

"It's a wonderful organization and such an important cause with 37 million people today still living and struggling with HIV AIDS, and it's important that we remember that and never forget," she added.

It was announced last month that Johansson and husband Romain Dauric were divorcing. The pair were married for two years, and have a two-year-old daughter. The couple had not been in seen in public since last fall. It was announced they separated last summer.

Other attendees at the amfAR gala included Paris Hilton and model Adriana Lima.

Hilton spoke of amfAR's continued relevance.

"People need to know that it is still happening. It's very serious, you need to be careful, and we need to find a cure because people are dying every single day, and a lot of people can't find the right treatments. That's why we're all here tonight to raise money to stop it," she said.

Lima said she feels proud of the fashion industry's involvement with the organization.

"I really believe that it's very touching that for the kick-off of fashion week to start with such a great event, that's amfAR, to help and raise funds to find a cure for HIV," said the Victoria's Secret Angel.

The star-studded event included actors, musicians, and fashion designers. Among them: Kenneth Cole, Zac Posen, Iman, Heidi Klum, and Jeremy Piven.

amfAR is one of the world's leading non-profit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, and treatment education. Since 1985, amfAR has invested $450 million (USD) in its programs and has awarded more than 3,300 grants to research teams worldwide.

The annual gala kicked off New York Fashion Week and featured a performance by Grammy-nominated British pop sensation Ellie Goulding.

RAPPER THE GAME SENTENCED FOR PUNCHING LOS ANGELES POLICEMAN

The Game has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service for assaulting an off-duty policeman during a pick-up basketball game in Hollywood.

The 37-year-old rapper, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, also received a six-month suspended jail term Monday (06 FEB.) and was ordered to attend anger management counseling.

He may have to do the time if he gets into any more trouble.

Prosecutors say during a game in 2015, Taylor threatened, intentionally fouled and sucker-punched the officer, who'd stolen the ball from him and made a basket.

Taylor also pleaded no contest to stealing a camera from a paparazzi who filmed him being served with legal papers after the officer sued him.

Taylor pleaded no contest to felony grand theft and misdemeanor counts of making criminal threats and battery.

"So I decided to take the risk with my friends and my assistants, we went there for a two day trip, we spent hours from the day to the night to meet the people, see the young, see the old, meet the soldiers, see how they look for the dead bodies, and we found what they need at this moment. That two day trip changed my life, I decided that I should actually stay in Japan and do something not just charity, it is more about spreading the message and rebuilding the city. Well I am a photographer so I thought about making posters, making books, doing talk shows, doing exhibitions so that I can cheer up the city.

STORYLINE

LOVE & HOPE

Japanese pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki and actress Erika Sawajiri were the star guests at the book launch of 'Love & Hope', a collection of works by Singaporean photographer Leslie Kee.

The photo book has been especially compiled to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake of March 11th and features images of 200 women from 32 countries, including Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Paris Hilton.

Leslie Kee visited the Tohoku region shortly after the earthquake to meet victims, volunteers and soldiers and decided to raise awareness through his own work.

The opening reception took place at Omotesando Hills in Tokyo and featured a performance by pop singer Anri.

Ayumi Hamasaki, whose tour was postponed due to the earthquake, posed for the book cover and made a surprise appearance, causing pandemonium amongst the guests.

Ayumi Hamasaki has sold over 50 million records and achieved a record 25 consecutive number one singles in Japan making her one of Asia's most successful artists.

Leslie Kee is renowned for capturing his subjects nude and has released a number of high-profile and controversial books featuring models and celebrities from Asia and around the world.

3,000 copies of the book have been published and will be available from May 30, at a price of 2,500 yen in order to raise 15,000,000 yen for the Japanese Red Cross Society.

JON STEWART PREMIERES ROSEWATER AT TIFF

Daily Show host Jon Stewart attended the premiere of his passion project, 'Rosewater' Monday (9 September 2014) at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Stewart made his directorial debut with the film that tells the story of Iran-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari. It based on his book that describes his five-month imprisonment in Iran in 2009 for alleged spying.

With Stewart, the Daily Show has become more than a "fake news" comedy show, but a barometer for what's happening around the world. "Rosewater" is a serious movie, and when asked what made him think he could actually pull it off, Stewart was quick to respond.

"Very little makes me believe I can pull this off. (laughs) Hopefully, I think it's an extension of a long career and getting to stretch out and do different things. But mostly it's about Maziar (Bahari) and the book that he wrote about it and how compelling that was," Stewart said.

Stewart struck up a friendship with Bahari.

"I think just becoming friendly with Maziar after he was released from prison. We used to just meet in New York and have breakfast. We would talk about the book and talk about our families and - when I read the book the level of emotion and complexity and everything that was in there. But also the humor that he was able to keep when he was in prison. It kind of struck me."

Stewart feels he's learned more about the obstacles that face journalists today.

"Journalism has expanded now with technology and bloggers and activists and everybody. Regimes in the east, in the west, in America are finding different levers of power to try and stifle it. So I thought this was a very appropriate and urgent story given what's happening to journalists. Not just the incredibly egregious examples that we see, but a more ubiquitous kind of -- being arrested, being harassed, being hassled and that was a lot of the basis of the story," Stewart said.

While the film depicts Bahari's ordeal, he feels it's not really about him, but the problem as a whole.

"It feels good because we are talking about subjects that are dear to me, we are talking about what journalists in Iran and other authoritarian regimes are going through every day. The story of the film is really not my story. It's the story of many of my colleagues, my friends in different parts of the world and being in Toronto, it provides us a platform to talk about that," Bahari said.

In the film, he's played by Gael Garcia Bernal.

"It is set in a specific place, in a specific context, but it is about a worldwide issue, which is the prosecution for, err, the prosecution against freedom of speech, against journalists all over the world, drawing a complicated question, which is solitary confinement is also torture," Bernal said.

'Rosewater' opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 7.

STORYLINE:

Local Chinese and international celebrities gathered at the Harpers Bazaar Charity Event to benefit victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

Famous movie stars such as Ziyi Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jet Li, participated in a lavish, stylised charity dinner in Beijing to help raise money just three days from the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Celebrities and rock stars showed up in the latest fashions to meet with foreign visitors such as Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Referring to the 2012 London Olympics, Tony Blair expressed his admiration for the success of the Beijing Olympics.

"I don't think there's much that Beijing Olympics hasn't achieved. I think it's been just an amazing, spectacular Games--really exciting, really inspiring. And, you know, we have a lot to live up to in London, but we'll try and do it our way. You've done it your way in China, and I don't think anyone could have done it better than you've done it. So we'll think about, we've got four years to think about getting it right. So that's what we'll do," he said.
