LARRY KING ON LATEST FOX NEWS EXITS: 'THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GET'

Larry King was not surprised to hear that Fox News Channel co-president Bill Shine was the latest high-level departure at the network beset with charges of harassment and discrimination.

"Hey, if you've got an atmosphere of people taking advantage of women in a crude way, they deserve what they get," King said.

Shine was not accused of any direct wrongdoing, but he was considered vulnerable because of claims that he looked the other way as charges of toxic workplace behavior piled up.

Founding CEO Roger Ailes, leading TV personality Bill O'Reilly and a top financial executive also recently left Fox.

"Well they deserved it. Yeah, of course," said King at an event Monday (1 May) honoring his lengthy career in television and radio.

Actor Corey Feldman was among the celebrity crowd to attend King's Hollywood party.

"I'm sad to see it, of course, and I hope, of course, for everybody's sake that it's not true," Feldman said of the Fox turmoil. "But then again, as a victim, as a recovering victim, I have to say that my heart always goes out to those who have been, you know, injured or abused in any way. It's just not right and it's got to stop."

The 83-year-old King, who was celebrating 60 years in broadcasting, said his secret to longevity was simply luck.

"I can't believe it's seven decades, 60 years. If I make it to 2020, that would be eight decades. I keep thinking about that because I'm 83. I don't feel 83. No, I feel good, yeah. You need a little luck for longevity. As Sinatra said, there's a lot to be said for longevity. Must be doing something right," he said.

King's Hollywood pals -- including Jenna Elfman, Donna Mills and singer Pat Boone -- came out to support him in his big night.

"He cares. He's not out to get anybody. He asks penetrating questions. He's been at it a long time, but he's a friend," said Boone.

On of King's interviews, model and reality TV star Janice Dickinson, was also on hand to toast the TV veteran.

"It's 60 years in broadcasting! Can you imagine that? That's amazing! And the people that Larry King has interviewed over the years: presidents, dictators and me!" she said with a laugh.

Though the evening was a celebration of King's many accomplishments, the ongoing writers' guild negations weighed on some partygoers.

"It's always a sad thing when those kinds of things happen because it sort of stops everybody in their tracks and their creativity. And you know it's depressing and there's nothing good about it. You know you hope that the outcome will be satisfactory to everyone, but I don't know how often that happens. It's really a sadness," said actress Tippi Hedren.

Negotiations aimed at preventing a crippling strike by Hollywood movie and TV writers were down to the wire Monday night.

That the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers talked over the weekend and continued on Monday was a hopeful sign. The current contract expires at midnight PDT Monday.

But with both sides observing a strict news blackout, there was no official indication of how close they are to a deal on key issues including compensation and health care.

"Well we've had that before. It's the law of the land, bargaining. I believe in the right to strike if people aren't happy and negotiations," said King.

Guild members were advised to remain ready to strike as they await what should be "something substantive" on progress by Tuesday morning, a memo from WGA negotiators said.

"Of course that's the lifeblood of entertainment is the writers. I thought they were pretty well-paid, really a lot of them are. But maybe there's needs to still be some corrections or some enhancement because they are our life blood," said Boone.

The previous writers' strike lasted 100 days in 2007-08 and was costly to the businesses that serve Hollywood and to consumers expecting to be entertained.

Last month, WGA members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike.

Celebrities arrived to the Producer's Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday (28JAN2017) night as protests sparked around the country in response to President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The executive order bans legal U.S. residents and visaholders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.

"We support the protests," said John Legend on the red carpet before the PGA ceremony. "We donated to ACLU today and we are grateful that they were in court in Brooklyn defending the rights of immigrants and refugees to come to this country. And we reject Donald Trump's message of fear and hate and we encourage everybody out there to speak out against it. Call your Congress people, support ACLU, support IRC and all those organizations that are speaking out for immigrants and refugees. And we're going to defeat him. He is an enemy of democracy. He's an enemy of freedom. He's an enemy of inclusion and he's going to lose."

Legend, who participated in the Women's March along with his wife Chrissy Teigen, said he will do whatever he can to help the protesters.

"Chrissy marched in D.C. I marched at Sundance and we're going to do whatever we can to resist his evil regime," he said.

Legend was on hand to support "La La Land," which he appeared in and served as an executive producer on. The retro musical reaped a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and was also vying for top honors at the PGAs.

A protest at John F. Kennedy airport, where 12 refugees were detained Saturday, swelled to more than 2,000 people, including some celebrities. Protesters also converged in Newark, New Jersey, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

"Lion" star and Oscar nominee Dev Patel called the travel ban "heartbreaking."

"I mean it's completely heartbreaking to be honest. I just flew in from India yesterday and to arrive to such devastating news of such a divisive nature, it's terrible. It's heartbreaking," he said.

Trump's order immediately suspended a program that last year resettled to the U.S. roughly 85,000 people displaced by war, political oppression, hunger and religious prejudice.

He indefinitely blocked all those fleeing Syria, where a civil war has displaced millions of people, and imposed a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations.

FEW HUNDRED ATTEND RAPPER'S GANG SUMMIT IN LOS ANGELES

Rapper The Game says he was moved to call together Los Angeles gang members for an anti-violence summit because he wants to help create a safer world for his children.

"I have children and I want (them) to grow up in a better world than the one I can see with my own eyes," said The Game after Sunday's summit in South Los Angeles.

An overflow crowd of several hundred gathered at a community center to hear pleas for peace from current and former gang members, entertainers, activists and preachers from the Nation Of Islam.

"You know too many people want to say we do this now and then change the direction as soon as we do one thing. No. What we do next is we do this again and we continue to do it until everybody gets onboard. You know it's like a bus going through the city, a bus of love and a bus of positivity. We want to keep the doors open. We want everybody to get on the bus. And this love and this positivity that we're preaching and change were about to bring about is free admission. All you got to do is get on the ride with us," The Game said during an interview.

Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck shook hands with The Game outside the venue in a show of unity. Beck said the meeting was a "great first step" in the right direction toward curbing violence, especially considering the police shootings Sunday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"I'm out here to support a message of anti-violence being put forward by members of the rap community, the hip-hop community, members of the faith community and some very, very significant community leaders. You know all of us recognize that this community, our community, is far too violent and we want to stop the violence, we want to stop the killings and you know then we can talk about some of the other issues. But first we've got to make this a safe community," Beck said.

Three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers investigating a report of a man with an assault rifle were killed Sunday, less than two weeks after a black man was fatally shot by police in the city during a confrontation that sparked nightly protests that reverberated nationwide.

"Of course officers, civilians, any life lost is a major deterioration of us as a people," said The Game of the shooting. "I don't like it and this is why we are here taking initiative and trying to change it. So you know peace and love and prayers go out to those families, but that's a tragedy as well as all lives."

The Game, born Jayceon Terrell Taylor, fought back tears as he recounted the recent shooting death of a former gang member he called Spanky. The pair grew up together in foster care in nearby Compton, he said.

"Me in my foster home, I was the only black dude in my foster home. I grew up with Mexicans only. And you know if a tear falls it's because ... it's because one of the cats that I grew up with in a foster home with, Calvin. His name was Spanky, he was from Playboy Gangster. Straight Mexican. That was more my brother than my own brothers," said The Game to the crowd.

"L.A., this is one of the biggest, best cities in the world. Not just the nation of America, in the world. And from this day out, politicians, mayors, president of the United States, all of them are going to be held accountable, everybody. But before we do that, we've got to hold ourselves accountable as people," said the 36-year-old multi-platinum selling rapper.

The Game put the word out last week on his active Instagram account, inviting leaders of the Crips, Bloods and other street gangs to come together for "Time To Unite: United Hoods + Gangs Nation." Dozens of gang members, some sporting red and blue colors, heeded the call and filed peacefully into the building to hear more than a dozen speakers. The neighborhood a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles has a large black population and has been plagued by random violence.

Aurora Hudson praised the decision to shine a light on "the brutality in our neighborhoods." The 25-year-old came to the meet-up from her home just blocks away and called it a positive experience.

"A lot of times when you look at the media and you look at the news you see different things. You don't see anyone talking about OK how people are uniting against gang violence, but it happens and it is important. And of course it is important for us as black people, they stop killing us - the police. But as well we stop killing each other and that's the important thing too. And if we unite as a group and end gang violence I think we can get a lot more things done in the community as well," said Hudson.

Veteran gang interventionist Alex Sanchez urged unity between Latino and black community members. Radio personality Big Boy, recording artist will.i.am and rappers Shorty, Problem and Bad Lucc were among the entertainers in the crowd. Security was provided by the Nation of Islam and there wasn't a big police presence at the summit.

Men need to have a "much-needed conversation" about their influence on young people and how to serve as better role models, The Game wrote on Instagram, where he has 6.6 million followers.

Earlier this month, The Game and fellow rapper Snoop Dogg led a peaceful march to Los Angeles police headquarters, where they met with the mayor and police chief and urged improved relations between authorities and minority communities.

The rappers are among many activists and celebrities calling for change following the police-related killings of black men nationwide and the shooting deaths of five police officers in Dallas by a lone gunman motivated by racial hatred.

GRIFFIN NOT 'LAYING DOWN' FOR TRUMP, FEARS CAREER IS OVER

An emotional Kathy Griffin says she's not afraid of Donald Trump and plans to keep making fun of him but maintained that she's sorry for a video that depicted her holding a likeness of the president's severed, bloody head.

At a press conference Friday (2 JUNE 2017), the comedian at times tearful and at times laughing and joking predicted her career is over and said Trump "broke me." Since the video was posted Tuesday, she has lost her job co-hosting CNN's New Year's Eve special and had at least four comedy shows canceled. She has also received death threats that she characterized as "constant and they are detailed and they are serious and they are specific."

Trump, first lady Melania Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have publicly criticized the video.

Griffin, who asserted that she has been contacted by the Secret Service, said the Trumps are "trying to ruin my rights forever."

Griffin, 56, repeated her claim that the video was a parody, meant as a pointed comeback to Trump's remark last summer that former Fox News Channel personality Megyn Kelly had "blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of wherever."

"I'm not laying down for this guy," she said in one defiant moment. "I'm going to keep making jokes about this guy."

Griffin's attorney Lisa Bloom said the comedian has a first amendment right to make fun of the president and accused the president of "using the power of the federal government against her."

Though Griffin apologized within hours of the images appearing online Tuesday, they were met with swift and widespread condemnation.

Trump later tweeted that Griffin "should be ashamed of herself" for posting the images.

The comic has faced controversies before for her abrasive humor, but none as widespread as the one generated by Tuesday's images.

'BFG' STARS DISCUSS BRITAIN'S EU REFERENDUM

The intense debate over Britain's future in or out of the European Union came to Hollywood Tuesday (21 June 2016) as the stars of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" weighed in on the high-stakes issue at their film's Los Angeles premiere.

Academy Award winner Mark Rylance expressed his concerns about the EU referendum while remembering slain British lawmaker Jo Cox.

"It's a very big week and it's been really tragic to see the death of that wonderful woman, you know who such a compassionate campaigner. And just to see there are things about Europe that worry me. There are trade agreements. This horrible TTIP agreement is a terrible thing. I don't know why Obama is backing it. It gives corporations the right to sue us if we change our minds as a people. It's not democratic. But on the other hand, all the guys who are backing separation are so awful about refugees. They're all rather nasty businessman, like Rupert Murdoch. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. People don't know who they are and they feel betrayed by the government so have really sold out to business too often, too long. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"Downton Abbey" actress Penelope Wilton said leaving would be a "disaster."

'BFG' STARS DISCUSS BRITAIN'S EU REFERENDUM

The intense debate over Britain's future in or out of the European Union came to Hollywood Tuesday (21 June 2016) as the stars of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" weighed in on the high-stakes issue at their film's Los Angeles premiere.

Academy Award winner Mark Rylance expressed his concerns about the EU referendum while remembering slain British lawmaker Jo Cox.

"It's a very big week and it's been really tragic to see the death of that wonderful woman, you know who such a compassionate campaigner. And just to see there are things about Europe that worry me. There are trade agreements. This horrible TTIP agreement is a terrible thing. I don't know why Obama is backing it. It gives corporations the right to sue us if we change our minds as a people. It's not democratic. But on the other hand, all the guys who are backing separation are so awful about refugees. They're all rather nasty businessman, like Rupert Murdoch. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. People don't know who they are and they feel betrayed by the government so have really sold out to business too often, too long. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"Downton Abbey" actress Penelope Wilton said leaving would be a "disaster."

TCA CELEBS REFLECT ON MOVIE-THEATRE SHOOTINGS

A day after the Colorado movie-theatre shootings that took the lives of 12 and injured 58 others, celebrities in Beverly Hills, at the opening day of the 2012 summer session of the Television Critics Association (TCA), weighed in on the tragedy -- most raising questions about stateside gun control.

"Thor" director and actor Kenneth Branagh, at the TCAs promoting miniseries "Wallander 3," said, "I think that it is inevitable and it's necessary that after such tragic events that a debate is inevitably brought up on all elements of it, whether it's gun control or influences or the background of those involved or the specific circumstances. And I think it's too important and it's too devastating for those involved to jump to conclusions, but that there should be serious and considered conversation about how one could possibly do anything and everything possible one could to avoid the repeat of such a heinous and tragic situation. That's important, but it's not the matter of an instant reaction, I think."

Actor Hugh Bonneville, an Emmy nominee for the second series of "Downton Abbey" and in town to generate press the third installment, noted, "We have gun crime in Britain. But we don't have access to guns in the same way that you do here. I'm not from this country. I'm not going to be drawn into the debate. But I think if you don't have access to a gun, you can't shoot people. That's all I'll say."

Documentarian Ken Burns, in Beverly Hills unveiling his latest film, "The Dust Bowl," commented, "No one wants to take away anybody's guns. A smiling Paris Hilton walked out of a Los Angeles County jail early on Tuesday, officially ending a bizarre, three-week stay that ignited furious debate over celebrity treatment in the jail system.

The 26-year-old celebutante wrapped up her three-week stay at the all-women's jail in Lynwood at about 15 minutes past midnight, local time (0715GMT).

There wasn't much going on after Hilton's release, leaving media mobs waiting for the next step.

Outside Hilton's grandparent's house, where the heiress is believed to be staying, media from around the world awaited for the next development in the saga.

The crush of press vehicles and fans caused traffic headaches and flared tempers in the normally peaceful neighbourhood.

Outside Hilton's house a smaller group of media also waited for action.

Fans stopped by her residence earlier in the morning, leaving cards and balloons on her front gate.

Press outside the residence theorised about why they were there.

"Well this is a cultural phenomenon isn't it? Paris Hilton famous for being famous. Who knows why we are here. This is just another typical Los Angeles media circus," said Peter Bowes, a reporter for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In the early morning hours, AP Television stopped a woman, who remained anonymous, leaving Lynwood jail after visiting a friend of hers.

Since the woman's friend had only arrived the day before, she missed all the Hilton commotion.

However, the woman did share her previous experience as a prisoner at the jail house and noted, it was very embarrassing.

"When they line you up against the wall and have you spread open, your body and they are going around spraying something that smells. It's humiliating," she said.

During her stay at the Lynwood facility, Hilton was mostly confined to a solitary cell in the special needs unit away from the other 2,200 inmates.

Hilton will complete her probation in March 2009 as long as she keeps her driver's license current and doesn't break any laws.

She can reduce that time by 12 months if she does community service that could include a public-service announcement, the city attorney's office has said.

Hilton's path to jail began September 7, when she failed a sobriety test after police saw her weaving down a street in her car on what she said was a late-night run to a hamburger stand.

She pleaded no contest to wreckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and 1,500 US dollars in fines.

In the months that followed, she was stopped twice by officers who discovered her driving with a suspended license.

The second stop landed her in Sauer's courtroom, where he sentenced her to 45-days in jail.

She was released after three weeks for reasons including good behaviour.

STORYLINE:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nipsey Hussle's legacy as a persistent rapper, community activist, uniter, a doting father, a protective sibling and a loving son were underscored at his public memorial service on Thursday, with deeply personal testimonies from those closest to the rapper, including his actress-fiancee Lauren London, collaborator and dear friend Snoop Dogg and his mother, who said she was at peace with the death of her "superhero" son.

Beyonce and Jay-Z were among the big-name celebrities who attended the three-hour event in Los Angeles at the Staples Center, where the last celebrity funeral held at the concert arena was Michael Jackson's in 2009.

The arena was packed with more than 21,000 fans and drove home the important impact Hussle - just 33 when he died - had on his city and the rest of the world.

"I'm very proud of my son. My son Ermias Joseph Asghedom was a great man," said Angelique Smith, dressed in all white. Standing onstage with Hussle's father, Dawit Asghedom, she declared: "Ermias was a legacy."

London, who was in dark sunglasses, was emotional but stood strong onstage as she told the audience: "I've never felt this type of pain before."

London called Hussle "majestic" and "brilliant" and said she had learned so much from his presence. She added though she was hurting, she was really sad for their son Kross, whom she feared wouldn't remember his dad: "My pain is for my two-year-old."

Snoop Dogg's words to immortalize his friend were both serious and silly, as he told old stories about Hussle and their brotherhood.

"This a tough one right here," he said, visibly shaken but keeping his composure.

Snoop thanked Hussle's parents multiple times and told his father that "you picked up another son in me."

Hussle's father said he knew his son was strong because when he was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck but he prevailed.

"He was a fighter," he said.

Earlier in the ceremony, Hussle's children also appeared onstage to pay tribute. London's son with rapper Lil Wayne, Cameron Carter, said days after Hussle died, he had a dream he saw the rapper.

"I realized Ermias told me what heaven was like. He told me it was paradise," Cameron said.

Cameron then told the audience that Hussle would look at him through the window at times and say "respect." Cameron then asked the crowd to say "respect" in unison, and they complied.

Hussle was slain last month in front of a store that he tried to use to empower his South Central neighborhood.  The public memorial service kicked off by paying respect to Hussle the rapper, as songs from his latest Grammy-nominated album, "Victory Lap," filled the arena.

"Everybody put your hands in the air," the DJ said as one of Hussle's songs played. "It's a celebration."

Indeed, his mother danced in the aisle as R&B singer Marsha Ambrosius sang the Mariah Carey song "Fly Like a Bird" while fighting back tears. "This is for Nipsey y'all," Ambrosius said before she started as she tried to gain her composure, sighing heavily.

But soon the focus was squarely on the person behind the persona.  A montage of photos featuring the rapper from infancy, childhood and adulthood, with fellow rappers, his family and London, were shown to the crowd, set to Frank Sinatra's "My Way."

Stevie Wonder was the last performer to pay tribute to Hussle, who he said he had the chance to meet, saying: "We had a good conversation." Before he sang his song "Rocket Song," one of Hussle's favorites, Wonder denounced gun violence and told the audience "there's enough people being killed by guns and violence."

Anthony Hamilton invoked the spirit of a church service when he performed in Hussle's honor. Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan hailed Hussle's ability to bring different factions together. And blogger and media figure Karen Civil read a letter sent by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

"I've never meet Nipsey, but I've heard his music through my daughters, and after his passing I had the chance to learn more about his transformation and his community work. While most folks look at the Crenshaw neighborhood where he grew up and only see gangs, bullets and despair, Nipsey saw potential. He saw hope. He saw a community that even through its flaws taught him to always keep going. He choice to invest in that community rather than to ignore it," the Obama letter read. "He set an example for young people to follow and is a legacy worth of celebration. I hope his memory inspires more good work in Crenshaw and communities like it. Michelle and I send our sympathies to Lauren, Emani, Kross and his while family and to all those who love Nipsey."

Father Thomas Uwal read a scripture in Tigrinya - the native language in Eritrea, the African country where Hussle's father was from. Father Uwal spoke of Hussle being a "proud to be an Eritrean-American," later saying to the late rapper's family: "On behalf of all Eritreans ... we say our condolences to you."

Books with an image of Hussle on the cover were handed out to service attendees. The book of nearly 100 pages contained numerous photos of Hussle with London, his children, and friends like Russell Westbrook and Snoop Dogg. It also had heartfelt messages from Rick Ross, The Game and LeBron James.

"I've never cried myself to sleep over any public figure before, but Nipsey's presence meant so much for our community," actress Issa Rae said in her message inside the book.

The hearse carrying Hussle's coffin was scheduled to after the funeral to go on a 25-mile lap through the city, including past the property where Hussle had planned to turn an aging strip mall into new businesses and affordable homes. Finally, it will arrive at a funeral home in the city's hard-scrabble Crenshaw district, where the rapper was born on Aug. 15, 1985.

Hussle was shot to death March 31 while standing outside The Marathon, his South Los Angeles clothing store, not far from where the rapper grew up.

Eric R. Holder Jr., who has been charged with killing Hussle, has pleaded not guilty. Police have said Holder and Hussle had several interactions the day of the shooting and have described it as being the result of a personal dispute.

For a decade, Hussle released much sought-after mixtapes that he sold out of the trunk of his car, helping him create a buzz and gain respect from rap purists and his peers. His said his stage name, a play on the 1960s and '70s rhyming standup comic Nipsey Russell, was given to him as a teen by an older friend because he was such a go-getter - always hustling.

He charged $100 for his 2013 mixtape "Crenshaw," scoring a cash and publicity coup when Jay-Z bought 100 copies for $10,000.

Last year he hit new heights with "Victory Lap," his critically acclaimed major-label debut album on Atlantic Records that made several critics' best-of lists. The album debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's 200 albums charts and earned him a Grammy nomination.

But the rapper was also a beloved figure for his philanthropic work that went well beyond the usual celebrity "giving back" ethos. Following his death, political and community leaders were as quick and effusive in their praise as his fellow hip-hop artists.

Hussle recently purchased the strip mall where The Marathon is located and planned to redevelop it, part of Hussle's broader ambitions to remake the neighborhood where he grew up and attempt to break the cycle of gang life that lured him in when he was younger.

His family and friends vowed to continue his work, and London told the crowd: "The marathon continues!"

STORYLINE:

Child welfare investigators earlier this year found there was no basis for allegations that Michael Jackson had abused the boy now accusing him of molestation, according to a confidential memo.

The memo from an administrator with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services was based on an investigation last February and was leaked to the Web site thesmokinggun.com, which posted it Tuesday.

A source familiar with the document confirmed its authenticity to The Associated Press.

The memo was dated Nov. 26, 2003 - a week after the Santa Barbara County district attorney announced child molestation allegations against the singer.

Both the boy and his brother told investigators Jackson had not sexually abused them, according to the memo. Their older sister said she had never

witnessed anything sexually inappropriate between her brothers and the entertainer.

The memo was sent from a regional administrator to bureau chief Charles Sophy and detailed a probe completed before Sophy joined the agency.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney Thomas Sneddon said in a statement that his office has been aware of the investigation and that it did not

affect his decision to pursue charges.

The report and the "totality of the investigation" were provided to the judge when the search and arrest warrants were issued for Jackson, Sneddon

said.

Jackson's defense is certain to seize on the memo.

The memo, which refers to Jackson as "the entertainer," said the department began a 13-day inquiry after a Los Angeles school district

official called its hot line Feb. 14 out of concern for the boy and his brother. The investigation was conducted with the Los Angeles police.

The school official suspected neglect by the boy's mother and sexual abuse by Jackson, according to the memo. But the department and the police concluded the allegations were "unfounded," the document said.

Louise Grasmehr, a spokeswoman for the child welfare department, said the leak would probably be investigated because the memo was supposed to be confidential under state laws designed to protect children. Police spokeswoman Officer Sandra Escalante had no comment.

Jackson was booked Nov. 20 on suspicion of child molestation. He has denied the allegations and was released on $3 million bail. Authorities said

they expect to file formal charges next week.

CELEBRITIES REACT TO PROP 8 PROTEST

Celebrities reacted to a massive protest taking place just a few blocks away from the BAFTA LA Awards Thursday evening (6 NOV 2008).

For the second night in a row, protesters took to the streets in California to voice their anger at the passage of Proposition 8, an anti-gay marriage initiative on the ballot in Tuesday's election.

Actor Sean Penn said it would be a good idea to go out and join the protestors.

Actress Patricia Clarkson, mirrored Penn's comments by saying after the awards were over everyone should lend their support to the protest.

Meanwhile 'W' star Richard Dreyfuss, said he thought the protest was a good thing and that's what is great about being American, the freedom of people to protest.

More than 1,000 people blocked traffic.

Television cameras showed one protester jumping on top of a police car at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland.

He was quickly wrestled to the ground by police and handcuffed.

The rally broke into several separate groups as midnight approached hours after the marching began, and protesters were still walking amid traffic on Santa Monica and San Vicente Boulevards in West Hollywood.

STARS ON HARROWING WILDFIRES ENGULFING CALIFORNIA

The growing wildfires in California were on the minds of many of Hollywood's A-listers as they arrived to the annual Baby2Baby charity gala on Saturday (10 NOVEMBER 2018), near the devastation.

Wildfires on both ends of California pushed into new territory Saturday, as fatigued firefighters worked to evacuate residents in harm's way and contain blazes that already have claimed at least 25 lives, destroyed thousands of homes and other structures, and scorched hundreds of square miles.

The three fires began Thursday (8 NOVEMBER 2018) — the largest in Northern California, where a Sierra Nevada town of 27,000 was destroyed by a fast moving-fire that quickly grew into the state's most destructive on record. In Southern California, two fires were burning in the drought-stricken canyons and hills north and west of downtown Los Angeles.

For the Baby2Baby charity, which provides basic essentials to children living in poverty, the Southern California fires brought their mission even closer to home.

The charity has stepped up relief efforts, setting up an online registry to collect high-need items for the children affected by the California fires.

Amy Adams was this year's guest of honor, the recipient of the "Giving Tree Award" for her commitment to children in need at the Baby2Baby Gala Presented by Paul Mitchell, held at 3Labs.

She said luckily she's not been in the path of fire and on balancing work, family and charity, she said she wanted to set a good example to her daughter.

"Our investment of time is so important and it's just one of my priorities. You know, I'd rather go work with Baby2Baby than do my laundry so it's like a no- brainer for me. But it's important to show, it's important to show my daughter to prioritize giving back, to prioritize giving back of your resources and your time," she said.

On the importance of teaching kids about the wildfires, Jennifer Garner and Busy Philipps said the roles were reversed in their cases.

"Well I mean gosh, kids are so wise, sometimes you feel like they're explaining it to you. But you just tell them they're safe, and there are a lot of helpers in the world, and you gaze toward light," said Garmer.

"My older daughter is incredibly thoughtful and she goes to a school where they really talk about these issues. You know I think I'm just a very open parent so honesty is the best thing I can be with my kid," added Philipps.

Actress Olivia Munn showed the visible after effects of the fire and smoke, coughing ahead of her interview with reporters.

"Well I live near Griffith Park (close to Hollywood) so there was the other fire over there. So that's in my air and that's in the smoke, and I've had this cough now because I was like right next to it," Munn said.

Dancer and actress Jenna Dewan, host of World of Dance, said in her community, it's literally neighbor helping neighbor.

"So we're opening our doors, or staying with friends, we're helping out with meals, we're doing whatever we can to you know, be there, which is what we have to do when there is something you can plan for it and there's a disaster such as this, you all have to come together that's what life is," she said.

Other stars in attendance included Olivia Wilde, Kobe Bryan, Judd Apatow, and Sam and Aaron Taylor-Wood.

The annual Baby2Baby gala is celebrating its seventh year and the event raises millions of dollars to support the charity's mission. Jury selection in Michael Jackson''s child molestation trial ended in Santa Maria, California on Thursday.

Eight alternate jurors were chosen, setting the stage for opening statements to begin next week.

The selection of the alternates came a day after the regular jury of 12 was sworn in by Judge Rodney S. Melville.

The main jury includes several fans of Jackson''s music, four parents of young children, one woman whose grandson was convicted of a sexual offence, and a man who visited Jackson''s Neverland ranch as a child.

The jurors, drawn from the region where Jackson lives and ranging in age from 20 to 79, will decide whether the 46-year-old pop star molested a 13-year-old former cancer patient at the ranch and plied him with alcohol.

The court has not disclosed the races of jurors, and lawyers and jurors are under a gag order not to discuss the case.

Race could be a factor because public opinion polls show blacks are less inclined to believe the charges against Jackson.

Opening statements start on Monday.

STORYLINE

Television and film-industry workers protested outside the Beverley Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, where the Golden Globes was taking place, calling for a swift end to the dispute that has left one of Hollywood's brightest and giddiest nights in shambles.

The Golden Globes Awards ceremony was cancelled for an hour-long televised announcement featuring television news personalities disclosing the winners in-between clips of nominated movies and shows, lacking the glitz and glamour the event is traditionally known for.

A few hours before the show, a dozen non-writer entertainment industry workers on strike stood outside the Beverly Hilton hotel, holding signs asking for the studios and the writers to resume negotiations.

The picket was greeted by supportive honks from cars on Santa Monica Boulevard.

"All of us have been put out of work and both sides won't negotiate. Their talks have stopped so weeks and weeks we've been waiting for them to resolve this and they haven't yet," said Karen Kovacic, a first aid worker with International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

The pickets were outnumbered by international television crews, but their protest was greeted by supportive honks from cars speeding by on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Another set nurse said: "We're not getting paid. They've seized all the funds."

On strike since 5 November, the Writers Guild of America refused to let union members work on the star-studded banquet-style show, prompting actors to boycott the ceremony rather than cross picket lines.

Despite the gowns and formal wear, the Globes are known as the freewheeling cousin of the Academy Awards, a place where stars can have a few drinks and cut loose as they celebrate the year's achievements in film and television.

The news conference format was a far cry from a ceremony whose star wattage would have been powered by the likes of Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, who all had acting nominations.

The fate of Hollywood's biggest night, the February 24 Oscars, remains uncertain.

Guild leader Patric Verrone has said writers would not be allowed to work on that show, either, which could force stars to make an even tougher choice on whether to stay away or cross the picket line.

Oscar organisers insist their show will come off as planned, with or without the writers.

As a result of their strike, films may not get quite the same box-office bounce they typically receive after winning high-profile prizes, which can add tens of millions of dollars to their haul during the long awards season.

Yet actors and writers say tough action is needed to make sure creative people get their fair financial share for the long haul.

The Golden Globes Awards ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, will be reduced to a news conference due to the writers strike and will likely draw picket lines and lack star power.

Despite the revamped ceremony announced on Monday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Screen Actors Guild said it was encouraging its members to skip the show in support of the two-month walkout by the Writers Guild of America.

"The WGA informed us they will picket the event on Sunday," the actors guild said in a statement.

Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America West, said union leaders were uncertain if they still would picket outside the Golden Globes since they were unclear about what form the awards announcement would take.

As he arrived at Monday's Critics' Choice Awards, actor George Clooney said he belonged to six unions and would not cross any picket lines.

"It comes down to if they feel that it's something that they want to enforce and picket then I'm not going to cross that. That would be, you know, impossible," Clooney said.

Nikki Blonsky, also on the red carpet, said she was undecided about whether to attend the revised Golden Globes, where she is a nominee for "Hairspray."

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which owns the Globes, issued a bleak statement about the ceremony that was to have showcased the likes of nominees Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington.

"We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favourite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television," association president Jorge Camara said in a statement.

Besides Jolie and Washington, this year's nominees include such other A-listers as Clooney, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day-Lewis, Keira Knightley, Cate Blanchett and Johnny Depp.

The developments stand as an ominous sign for the Academy Awards, which are scheduled to air 24 February on ABC.

The writers guild refused to grant waivers for its members to work on the Oscars or the Globes.

Disrupting the awards show season, a huge promotional showcase for the entertainment industry, is one way the guild can flex its power and attempt to bring producers back to the table to resume talks that collapsed on 7 December.

Oscar broadcast producer Gil Cates has vowed there will be a televised show, one way or another.

The writers strike, which began on 5 November, has broad implications for the way Hollywood does business.

Whatever deal is struck by writers on the key issue of payment for projects offered on the Internet could affect talks with actors and directors, whose contracts expire in June.

Instead of the traditional Globes show featuring a boozy, glitzy dinner party and awards presentation, the winners will be announced in an hour-long news conference at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said.

JURY SELECTED FOR JACKSON TRIAL

A jury was selected on Wednesday (23FEB05) to decide Michael Jackson''s fate on charges that he molested a teenage boy at his Neverland Ranch in California.

The panel consists of four men and eight women, ranging in age from 20 to 79.

After the jury was sworn in, lawyers moved on to the selection of eight alternate jurors.

The selection has taken place well ahead of schedule. Jury selection had been expected to last several weeks, but took only five court days, which were interrupted by a one-week break due to the death of a sister of one of the lawyers and another one-week break when Jackson was hospitalised with flu-like symptoms.

Selection moved at a fast pace when the judge imposed tight time limits on how long each prospective juror could be questioned.

During questioning of prospective jurors, defence attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr. asked prospects about their interest in the arts, their feelings toward Jackson, and whether they believed child witnesses could be led to lie. The defence will argue that the mother of Jackson''s accuser has told him to lie.

Prosecutor Ron Zonen''s questions included whether prospects were fans of Jackson, and whether they had seen a recent Fox News interview with Geraldo Rivera in which Jackson said many of the news reports about him are untrue.

The court has not disclosed the races of jurors and lawyers are under a gag order not to discuss the case.

According to one public opinion poll, blacks are less inclined to believe the charges against Jackson. The jury seated Wednesday was primarily white and Hispanic and did not appear to include any of the half-dozen black prospective jurors who were in the initial pool.

Two black women who had been questioned as potential jurors were rejected by prosecutors. The defence objected on both occasions - one Tuesday, the other Wednesday - and Jackson appeared upset when each woman was removed.

Selection of the alternate panel will continue on Thursday.

The 46-year-old Jackson is accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy, plying him with alcohol, and conspiring to hold him and his family captive.

BRAD PITT MAKES FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE SINCE LEAVING HOSPITAL

Actor Brad Pitt marked his first public appearance Wednesday (20 July 2005), following his release from a Los Angeles hospital on 13 July after being diagnosed with a mild case of viral meningitis.

Looking happy and healthy, Pitt reportedly arrived at the Beverly Hills Hotel on a motorcycle. The actor was there to accept a charitable donation from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that produces the annual Golden Globe Awards.

The HFPA presented Pitt with a 250,000US US dollars cheque, who accepted on behalf of director Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation, which focuses on film restoration.

Pitt, in jeans and a white jacket, and whose hair is still dyed blond, skipped the arrivals line and did not speak with media, though he did make a brief speech upon accepting the cheque.

Among the other stars accepting the HFPA's contributions were actors Sally Field, Peter Falk, Emmy Rossum, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Bradford, America Ferrera and Ziyi Zhang.

Zhang accepted money on behalf of FilmAid International, which brings filmed entertainment and education to Sudanese and other refugees in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya.

Zhang also spoke with AP Television News about her new film, the long-awaited "Memoirs of a Geisha," (from director Rob Marshall) in cinemas at the end of the year.

All tolled, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association donated more than 1,000,000 US dollars in financial grants to film schools and non-profit organisation.

Over the past 11 years, the HFPA has given more than 5,500,000 US dollars in financial grants.

Actually taking home one of the coveted gold statuettes at the Oscars may be a coveted award for the lucky few, but no nominees go home empty handed.

Oscar nominees in the Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress and Best Director categories are sent a gift bag worth $150,000 dollars. But now some actors are shunning the Oscar freebies.

STORY-LINE:

Oscar hopefuls can bag a bunch of goodies worth up to $150,000 after the award ceremony.

But the Oscar gifting suite, which was once the place to bag some bling is no longer the place to be seen for many stars.

The reason? Celebrities don't want to be seen holding up just any product when they can be paid for endorsements.

Today the chances of getting a celebrity to show up at a hotel suite so close to Oscar Sunday to try and have them hold the product to get a photo is now almost impossible.

Actors and actresses are paid handsomely for endorsements, and being of nomination calibre - they just don't want to be hounded.

George Blodwell, veteran celebrity stylist says the "oscar suite" does not work in today's social media environment.

He says the smartphone has changed the way that celebrities behave because a photo of a star snapping up some freebies would be taken, posted, and immediately retweeted around the world.

It is unrealistic to imagine that a celebrity will pose with you and a product in today's tech savvy world, says Blodwell.

"You can't really expect a superstar, that everybody knows all over the world, to hold a product up that costs $100 to $200 and have their picture taken with it because these people will use it for publicity. If you're using a star for publicity, it can cost quite a bit of money because the attention the star gives to that product is priceless so they are not coming to these gifting suites as much, because they're expected to hold the product have a picture taken for the people supplying the little gift for them and to be honest it's very tiring and draining and they are not going to do it," says Blodwell.

The gifting suite works at the Grammy's because the stars can pass through while at the awards show, says Blodwell.

But during Oscar week, there are very few gifting suites remaining.

One gifting suite that still keeps going after 19 years is the Roger Neal Beauty and Couture Academy Award Suite, which is located on the penthouse of the Luxe Hotel on Rodeo Drive.

Each year it is put on by veteran talent manager and publicist Roger Neal. It has survived because it has another purpose - charity.

Years ago, Neal transformed his suite into a place for stylists to come to see some new fashion and beauty services.

Some celebrities still come to the suite because of their long standing relationship with the Hollywood veteran - and because of the charity factor.

Neal says his suite has survived because it's not about the gifting as much as it is about the charities.

"It's turned into something that raises money for charity and that's why I get the stars. The stars can afford anything I have to give them, they can afford it but when they come in an autograph something for our charity like Hollygrove this year and it's auctioned off and raises money for the charity - then I'm giving back to the stars as a thank you for coming to my suite so that's why I do it. I don't do it for any other reason but to give back. My suite as a mission to it, that's why I think I'm different and I think that's why we haven't burned out" says Neal.

One man who knows celebrities do not want to be photographed snapping up a freebie in a suite is Lash Fary.
