STORYLINE:

Cuba's culture minister Abel Prieto appealed to world opinion on Wednesday to take up the case of five Cubans convicted on espionage charges in the US.

He called a news conference in Havana on Wednesday to launch a new book on the case of the Cuban Five, celebrated in their home country but little known in the rest of the world.

Fidel Castro's government sent Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez to South Florida to gather information about anti-communist exile groups and send it back to the island using encrypted software, high-frequency radio transmissions and coded electronic phone messages.

Leonard Weinglass, attorney for the Five told a student audience in Washington DC that it followed terrorist attacks by anti-Castro Cuban exiles:

"Cuba protested each and everyone of those acts. The US did nothing. Cuba went to the UN and asked the UN to pass a resolution against terrorism, years before 9/11... It is still on the agenda of the UN. They haven't acted on it. And when finally nothing else would work, Cuba sent these five men to the United States", he said.

The book, compiled with writings from 17 Cuban authors with an epilogue by the President of Cuba's National Parliament, reveals what Weinglass called "the untold story of the low intensity war...emanating from these shores against the country that is 90 miles (140 kilometres) away."

Weinglass said the unfair treatment received by the Cuban Five in the United States' judicial system is part of "a war that is lasted more than four decades and of which the American public knows virtually nothing."

"It is truly unacceptable that a case of violation of elemental justice should be hidden from North American public opinion as well as much of the public opinion of the world", said Prieto during Wednesday's press conference.

Weinglass said the five men were trying to gather information that might prevent exile groups from waging more attacks, such as the bombings at Havana hotels that killed an Italian tourist in 1997.

The five were convicted of being unregistered foreign agents and three were found guilty of espionage conspiracy for failed efforts to obtain military secrets.

Hernandez was also convicted of murder conspiracy in the deaths of four Miami-based pilots whose small, private planes were shot down in February 1996 by a Cuban MiG in international waters off Cuba's northern coast.

They were sentenced to terms ranging from 10 years to life in December 2001, but the case has ping-ponged through the court system the last six years due to a round of appeals.

In August 2005, a three-judge panel of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta tossed out the verdicts, saying the five didn't receive a fair trial because of anti-Castro bias in Miami. But the convictions were reinstated exactly a year later by the full 11th Circuit.

Among the allegations of unfair treatment cited by the defence and various organisations that support their release, is the refusal to grant visas to the wives of two of the detained Cubans to visit their husbands during the nine years they have spent behind bars.

The US has denied visitor's visas to the wives of Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez.

In February, Olga Salanueva, wife of Rene Gonzalez told AP Television "it is the right of every prisoner to receive a visit from his wife, of his family, the family that we created together."

"I think it is my right to visit him," she added

Although the five men's so-called "Wasp Network" spy ring recovered no US secrets, federal prosecutors argued for stiff penalties, saying they were well-trained spies who ran foul of federal law by failing to inform the government of their presence.

While serving their sentences, the men have become celebrities in their homeland. As Castro celebrated his 81st birthday last month, messages that the five hope to "celebrate all those future anniversaries together in our beautiful fatherland" were published in the Communist party newspaper.

The agents are currently seeking a new trial that they hope will overturn their prison sentences, which range from 15 years to life.

The book entitled "From the Loneliness and the Hope", (Spanish : "Desde La Soledad y La Esperanza") is accompanied by a music CD with compositions from ten Cuban musicians and composers.

Celebrities arrived to the Producer's Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday (28JAN2017) night as protests sparked around the country in response to President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The executive order bans legal U.S. residents and visaholders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.

"We support the protests," said John Legend on the red carpet before the PGA ceremony. "We donated to ACLU today and we are grateful that they were in court in Brooklyn defending the rights of immigrants and refugees to come to this country. And we reject Donald Trump's message of fear and hate and we encourage everybody out there to speak out against it. Call your Congress people, support ACLU, support IRC and all those organizations that are speaking out for immigrants and refugees. And we're going to defeat him. He is an enemy of democracy. He's an enemy of freedom. He's an enemy of inclusion and he's going to lose."

Legend, who participated in the Women's March along with his wife Chrissy Teigen, said he will do whatever he can to help the protesters.

"Chrissy marched in D.C. I marched at Sundance and we're going to do whatever we can to resist his evil regime," he said.

Legend was on hand to support "La La Land," which he appeared in and served as an executive producer on. The retro musical reaped a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and was also vying for top honors at the PGAs.

A protest at John F. Kennedy airport, where 12 refugees were detained Saturday, swelled to more than 2,000 people, including some celebrities. Protesters also converged in Newark, New Jersey, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

"Lion" star and Oscar nominee Dev Patel called the travel ban "heartbreaking."

"I mean it's completely heartbreaking to be honest. I just flew in from India yesterday and to arrive to such devastating news of such a divisive nature, it's terrible. It's heartbreaking," he said.

Trump's order immediately suspended a program that last year resettled to the U.S. roughly 85,000 people displaced by war, political oppression, hunger and religious prejudice.

He indefinitely blocked all those fleeing Syria, where a civil war has displaced millions of people, and imposed a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations.

The reclusive pop star MICHAEL JACKSON will deliver his first ever public lecture at Britain's Oxford University Union tomorrow (Tuesday 6th March).

He will be launching his new charity, Heal the Kids, while speaking about child welfare and the need for parents to devote more time to their children.

Jackson was accused of child abuse in 1993, but the case was settled out of court and he was never charged.

The hallowed halls of Oxford University are buzzing with excitement about the imminent arrival of a musical legend.

The university's Union has given a platform to a variety of controversial characters in the past, including OJ Simpson and Jerry Springer, but rarely has it seen such anticipation about the arrival of a world famous guest.

Students have been queuing for days in the debating chamber to pick up tickets for the Michael Jackson speech, and they are becoming a prized possession after a deluge of requests to attend.

Some might find it surprising that such a bastion of intellectual prowess should court a pop star to enlighten them about child welfare, but the President of the Union is in no doubt about Michael Jackson's celebrity pulling power.

Students who will not be able to get into the debating chamber because of lack of space will crowd into an ante room which will carry sound from the speeches.

There's no doubting the level of excitement at the prospect of coming face to face with the Moonwalker himself.

The fact that Jackson was investigated by Californian police for allegedly molesting a 12 year old boy has not been lost on the students, but most are willing to give him a fair hearing.

The event at the Union has been organised in large part by the flamboyant New York Rabbi Shmuley Boteach (pronounced BOE-TAY-ACH) who has forged a strong friendship with Michael Jackson over the last couple of years.

Boteach ran the University's most successful student society for eleven years and was introduced to Jackson by the psychic Uri Geller, with whom he has written a book.

The Rabbi firmly refutes any suggestion that Jackson was guilty of child molestation.

Jackson and the Rabbi both headed up a conference on their Heal the Kids charity in New York three weeks ago, prior to the launch at Oxford.

Rabbi Boteach says Jackson's speech will have a stunning impact.

Jackson will be best man at the magician Uri Geller's renewal of wedding vows in Berkshire on Wednesday and Boteach will be officiating at the ceremony.

Jackson hobbled in on crutches to the UK on Sunday evening sporting a plastered foot, which he fractured after falling down some stairs.

However, it's all good news for Jacko, as Geller says that he will heal the superstar's leg in just ten minutes for his wedding on Wednesday.

ANGELINA JOLIE VISITS SYRIAN REFUGEES

United Nations (UN) envoy Angelina Jolie travelled to Turkey's border with Syria on Friday (17 June 2011) to meet some of the thousands of Syrian refugees who have fled their government's bloody crackdown on dissent.

The Hollywood celebrity and goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees arrived in the Turkish province of Hatay on a private jet with boxes of toys for the refugee camps.

There are nearly 10-thousand Syrian refugees in camps inside Turkey.

The actress rested at Hatay airport and then headed to a camp in the Turkish town of Altinozu, Turkish media reported.

Police kept fans away from the actress at Hatay's airport and cameras were removed from rooftops and high points to prevent video of the visit.

Authorities said Jolie's own media team would provide images of her meetings with refugees.

In April, Jolie travelled to Tunisia during its refugee crisis as thousands fled from its war-torn neighbour, Libya.

The actress rested at Hatay airport and then headed to a camp in the Turkish town of Altinozu, Turkish media reported.

It's not democratic. But on the other hand, all the guys who are backing separation are so awful about refugees. They're all rather nasty businessman, like Rupert Murdoch. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. People don't know who they are and they feel betrayed by the government so have really sold out to business too often, too long. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"I want to stay in Europe with all my heart. I want to stay in Europe. I think it would be a disaster. And we are a global economy now and we're a global world and can't afford to go back to being little England anymore. We've got to join in and learn to join in," Wilton said.

For actress Rebecca Hall the issue is a matter of identity.

"I don't want us to leave the EU. I feel very strongly about it and I don't think we should and I think it's … That is my belief. I think it's been a really important thing. I identify as European as much as English and always have and I think that's very important," she said.

Hall added that she has shied away from discussing politics in the past, but is moved to speak up about the referendum.

SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Rodriguez: "It was Frank Miller, whose comic graphic novel that it was based on, so Frank, that's why I really wanted him as a co-director because he just knows this world, he created Sin City and all these characters and the visual look, is all from his books and I just thought, it was beyond cinema - take cinema and make a graphic novel out of it and not turn it into a movie. That would just ruin the book. So I really try to use all the technology and all the different tricks I've learned to try and do what Frank does with a pen and ink so simply in his little studio. It too me a lot to try and emulate that."

SOUNDBITE (English) Rosario Dawson: "Well, in some ways actually, I wish I had not seen even a little bit of it and even been a part of it, just so that I could have watched it completely clear of any idea of it but I really am still extremely amazed, profoundly, by how incredible Robert is and what a talent he is for being able to bring this to life the way he has. It really is such a perfect adaptation, that it's mind-boggling that we were in this little room with green screen behind and that's what it ended up looking like. It's magical."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Guy Berryman (talking about the songwriting process): "It's usually Chris who starts with a basic song, or a whole song, or a part of an idea and we will sit around, the two of us, or the three of us, or the four of us and we will work on that for a few hours. Over the course of days, or weeks, or years, they'll get worked out." SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Martin: "They'll either make it, or they won't make it. We are not geniuses, you know. We write a lot of songs. We just pick the least bad ones at the end."

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Martin (on dealing with being famous): "Most of the time we are regular anonymous people. It depends where we are and what we are doing. It depends who is following us and who is not following us. Most famous people, 90 percent of famous people, and I don't think we really count ourselves as famous people. Ninety percent of them get around pretty normally."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Guy Berryman (on their musical inspiration): "I think so, it's one of the great things about music...is there is so much out there, and there are always things to discover. There is old stuff that you'll hear and you'll never realise how good it was, or how greatly it will affect you, and you stumble upon the avenues and ideas and thoughts. That's something which is great because it's always fresh and there is always something to . . ." SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Martin: " . . . be terrified by. We reached a point last year where we probably weren't listening to enough other music, or old music. I started listening to a lot of Beatles and David Bowie and Kraftwerk and it just sounded so good that it was terrifying. It made us scrap a lot of our own work and push ourselves even harder. I think as much as it is important to compete with everyone that is around at the moment, it is just as important to compete with the greats. We haven't yet put on a Mozart record because that would be too scary."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Martin (does being a new father help you write inspirational music?): "Everything in my life inspires me to write music good and bad, and things that happen in our band as well. Something that happens to Guy might inspire lyrics, or something that happens to Jonnie (Jon Buckland). When you have a baby, or you lose a grandparent or a dog, or when you get a new house, or have your car stolen, it all goes in there."

SOUNDBITE (English) Tim Burton: "Yes that was important for this movie, we did use CG (computer generated images) and it's an important tool and element but what was also important was to, because, the thing I remember from the book is the textural quality of it and also working with kids, we wanted to give as much reality on the set as we possibly could, especially seeing as some of them hadn't done movies before so you know it was important for us to build, you know, the chocolate river and, you know, make it thick so it didn't just look like brown water and build the boat and have real Oompa Loompas, have squirrels, real squirrels because it not only helps the cast it helps the kids and it helps the crew because you get to be in the environment."
