JOHN LEGEND ON TRUMP'S TRAVEL BAN: 'HE IS AN ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY'

Celebrities arrived to the Producer's Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday (28JAN2017) night as protests sparked around the country in response to President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The executive order bans legal U.S. residents and visaholders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.

"We support the protests," said John Legend on the red carpet before the PGA ceremony. "We donated to ACLU today and we are grateful that they were in court in Brooklyn defending the rights of immigrants and refugees to come to this country. And we reject Donald Trump's message of fear and hate and we encourage everybody out there to speak out against it. Call your Congress people, support ACLU, support IRC and all those organizations that are speaking out for immigrants and refugees. And we're going to defeat him. He is an enemy of democracy. He's an enemy of freedom. He's an enemy of inclusion and he's going to lose."

Legend, who participated in the Women's March along with his wife Chrissy Teigen, said he will do whatever he can to help the protesters.

"Chrissy marched in D.C. I marched at Sundance and we're going to do whatever we can to resist his evil regime," he said.

Legend was on hand to support "La La Land," which he appeared in and served as an executive producer on. The retro musical reaped a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and was also vying for top honors at the PGAs.

A protest at John F. Kennedy airport, where 12 refugees were detained Saturday, swelled to more than 2,000 people, including some celebrities. Protesters also converged in Newark, New Jersey, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

"Lion" star and Oscar nominee Dev Patel called the travel ban "heartbreaking."

"I mean it's completely heartbreaking to be honest. I just flew in from India yesterday and to arrive to such devastating news of such a divisive nature, it's terrible. It's heartbreaking," he said.

Trump's order immediately suspended a program that last year resettled to the U.S. roughly 85,000 people displaced by war, political oppression, hunger and religious prejudice.

He indefinitely blocked all those fleeing Syria, where a civil war has displaced millions of people, and imposed a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations.

Paris Hilton was denied entrance into Japan on Wednesday, two days after she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour drug charge in Las Vegas, US.

Japan has strict immigration laws that bar entry to those convicted of drug offences, although exceptions are occasionally granted.

"I'm going back home, and I look forward to coming back to Japan in the future," a smiling Hilton said to reporters at Tokyo's Narita Airport.

The 29-year-old celebrity socialite was supposed to promote her fashion and fragrance lines at a news conference on Wednesday morning in Tokyo.

She arrived on Tuesday evening but was stopped at the airport and spent the night at a hotel there after being questioned by officials.

The move also abruptly cancelled Hilton's planned appearances in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Jakarta, Indonesia.

Hilton's publicist Dawn Miller wrote in a statement that Hilton planned to make the trips at a later date.

"Paris is very disappointed and fought hard to keep her business commitments and see her fans, but she is forced to postpone her commitments in Asia," Miller's statement, sent as Hilton's flight left, said.

"Paris understands and respects the rules and laws of the immigration authorities in Japan and fully wishes to cooperate with them."

A Japanese immigration official said she was denied entry on Wednesday after a total of about six hours of questioning over the two days.

The Asia trip had been planned before Hilton's arrest last month in Las Vegas, when an officer found a small amount of cocaine in her purse.

She pleaded guilty on Monday to drug possession and obstructing an officer and was placed on informal probation for one year.

The terms of her sentence did not restrict travel overseas.

The country has taken a tough line with famous figures in the past, although it also grants exceptions on occasion.

Soccer icon Diego Maradona was initially banned from entering the country during the 2002 World Cup finals for his past drug offences, but was eventually given a 30-day visa as a "special delegate."

The Rolling Stones struggled for years to gain entry to the country but were eventually allowed in despite its members' drug convictions.

In January 1980, former Beatles member Paul McCartney was arrested for marijuana possession upon arrival at Narita airport.

He was deported without carrying out a planned concert tour by his rock group Wings.

Jordan's King Abdullah II is preparing to leave for a visit to Washington DC on Monday in the aftermath of US President Donald Trump's recent temporary ban of entry to the US for people from seven Muslim-majority countries and a suspension of US the refugee resettlement programme.

State media have said the King would meet with administration officials and members of Congress, but did not mention a White House visit.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says his campaign is prepared to lay out specific policy plans. He's just not ready yet.

And in the meantime, he's selling his strong personality and criticizing his rivals, particularly Jeb Bush for a lack of vigor.

"There's no energy there, no energy. We need energy. We need tone," Trump said of Bush during a 50-minute speech to more than 2,000 people at a Republican fundraising dinner in Michigan, his first public appearance since last Thursday's first Republican primary debate. "We have heads being chopped off because there are Christians in the Middle East. ... The world is cracking up and they're worried about my tone."

It was Trump's first appearance as a presidential candidate in Michigan, where he decried China's decision to devalue its currency and Ford Motor Co.'s planned $2.5 billion investment in Mexico. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm fine with it," Trump told CNN's "New Day" Tuesday morning after concluding a brief phone interview with "Fox & Friends" in which Trump made no mention of Kelly or her questions.

In the interview with Hannity for Tuesday night, Trump said he was prepared to spend $345 million or more to fund his establishment-bucking campaign as long as he's doing well in the polls.

"Sure. You saw my income, my income is $400 million a year," Trump responded, according to highlights released by the network. "Sure, I would spend that if I am doing well!"

The billionaire businessman's campaign has also begun soliciting fundraising dollars through its website. Despite the appeals, campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said that Trump will continue to finance the campaign, but has "been overwhelmed by unsolicited contributions."

She said that Trump will match any money coming in.

Trump was also pressed earlier in the day by CNN host Chris Cuomo on his lack of specific policy proposals since declaring his presidential run.

"They want me to come up with a 10-point plan, a 14-point plan, a 20-point plan. It doesn't necessarily work that way," said Trump, who argued that, in business, flexibility is key.

A court sentenced Congolese pop star Papa Wemba to 30 months in prison on Tuesday - most of it suspended - for his involvement with an illegal immigration network.

Wemba, who spent more than three months in a French jail in 2003 before being released on bail, will not have to serve any additional prison time, said the court in the Paris suburb of Bobigny.

Prosecutors in France and Belgium had accused Wemba, one of the biggest names in African music and known as the "king of rhumba rock," of helping Congolese immigrants illegally obtain visas by passing them off as musicians working with him on European shows.

The network allegedly gave several dozen Congolese immigrants fake papers to enter France and Belgium.

Wemba maintained that people close to him had set up the network in 2001. "Everything was done using my name," he told the court last month.

Wemba's lawyer, Yves Leberquier, had argued that the singer was being made to carry too much blame.

The court sentenced Wemba to a 30-month term, with all but four suspended - handing him a lower penalty than the five-year sentence requested by prosecutors.

The singer, who was jailed in France for three and a half months between February and June 2003, will not be required to return to prison, the court said.

Wemba, whose real name is Shoungu Wembadio Pene Kikoumba, was placed under investigation in France and Belgium for forgery, obtaining false administrative documents and helping immigrants stay in the countries illegally.

Wemba rose to fame in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, during the 1970s with the band Zaiko Langa Langa, whose guitar-based fusion of Latin and African dance styles inspired a generation of African musicians.

He also was a pioneer of the "sapeur" youth culture. Marked by its dedication to extravagant fashions, it took off in Kinshasa and among Congolese communities in Europe.

With a new band, Viva La Musica, Wemba moved to Paris in the 1980s and helped popularise Congolese music beyond Africa.

The country's immigration director said the probe centers on the million-dollar mansion that lawyers for Smith claimed she had purchased.

Gaither B. Thompson, a developer from Myrtle Beach, S.C., has said that he owns the house where the 38-year-old reality star moved into while pregnant with her daughter. Smith's lawyers have said she moved to the Bahamas for privacy during her pregnancy.

Smith's daughter, Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, was born Sept. 7.

Three days later, Smith's 20-year-old son, Daniel, died while visiting her in a Nassau hospital.

A Bahamian lawyer for Smith has said the former Playboy Playmate owns the home.

The official inquiry began after immigration director Vernon Burrows read media reports about Thompson's ownership claim. Burrows said his department was seeking an explanation from the law firm that handled Smith's residency application, which said she had purchased the home for $1 million and planned to spend more on renovations.

Eight days after a shooting and bomb massacre that has shook the nation, Norwegians continue to gather in large public displays of solidarity.

The latest event was a memorial concert in Oslo''s main cathedral on Saturday.

The Crown Prince of Norway Haakon Magnus was among those who attended.

Madeleine Johansen was one of many people who couldn''t fit inside the cathedral.

Instead, she joined hundreds of others who watched the concert on a giant screen at a nearby plaza.

"He showed a lot of hate and I want to show love and that I do by coming here with all the people and everybody else," Johansen said.

Anders Behring Breivik, the anti-Muslim extremist who confessed to the bombing and youth camp massacre that killed 77 people has told investigators he also considered attacking other targets linked to the government or the prime minister''s Labour Party, police attorney Paal-Fredrik Hjort Kraby told reporters on Saturday.

During a 10-hour questioning session on Friday, Breivik asked interrogators how many people he had killed in the July 22 attacks, and showed no emotion when they told him, police attorney said.

Breivik released a 1,500-page manifesto before the attacks in which he ranted against Muslims and a left-wing political elite he claims is

destroying Europe''s cultural heritage by allowing unfettered immigration.

On October 1st 2013 three Golden Dawn extremist right-wing party members were taken to court for a preliminary hearing into charges of participating in a criminal organisation.

The party's top leadership, including its leader, are among 22 people arrested in a crackdown on the Nazi-inspired party sparked by the fatal stabbing on September 17th of a Greek rap singer. Arrest warrants have been issued for another 10 people.

Golden Dawn rose from a fringe group to become Greece's third most popular party in recent years, riding on a wave of anger over the country's deep financial crisis. It won nearly seven percent of the vote and gained 18 seats in the country's 300-member parliament in elections last year.

Party members and even lawmakers have frequently been accused in the past of being behind numerous violent attacks, mostly against dark-skinned migrants.

The party leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, is to appear in court for his deposition on October 2nd.

It is the first time since the 1974 restoration of democracy after a military dictatorship that sitting members of a Greek Parliament have been arrested.

A Greek court on October 2nd released three lawmakers from Greece's extremist right-wing Golden Dawn party from custody pending trial, after they provided initial testimony in criminal investigation triggered by the slaying of a left-wing rapper.

Party spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris was released on 50-thousand euros (67,770 US dollars) bail and a ban on leaving the country.

No bail was set for the other two, Ilias Panagiotaros, and Nikos Mihos, who were also banned from leaving the country but were defiant as they left the court complex.

"You can eat the false witnesses for breakfast. Everything will collapse," Panagiotaros shouted at the media, while Mihos yelled: "We will humiliate you all."

A fourth lawmaker, Ioannis Lagos, was jailed pending trial.

The head of the party, Nikos Michaloliakos - who is also detained - was to testify before an investigative magistrate later in the day.

A sixth lawmaker is scheduled to appear in court on October 3rd.

Golden Dawn's leadership was arrested over the weekend in a crackdown sparked by last month's stabbing death of 34-year-old leftwing rapper Pavlos Fyssas.

All face charges of setting up or participating in a criminal organisation.

A total of 32 arrest warrants were issued in the case, including two for police officers.

Authorities have been continuing raids on the homes of police officers with suspected ties to criminal activities linked to the party.

Golden Dawn is a Nazi-inspired party that rose from the margins of Greece's political scene to become the third-most popular party in Greece amid the country's severe financial crisis.

It has long been blamed for a series of violent attacks, most against immigrants.

The order is part of an investigation into his party triggered by the killing of a left-wing rapper.

Nikos Michaloliakos, who is a sitting member of Parliament, was ordered remanded in custody early on October 3rd, after overnight testimony that lasted for more than six hours.

Michaloliakos was escorted by police as he left the courtroom and entered a police vehicle.

A couple of hundred left-wing activists marched through central Athens on October 26th to protest against the continuing activities of extreme-right, anti-immigrant party Golden Dawn.

The march ended in an Athens neighbourhood with many immigrant residents that is also a Golden Dawn stronghold.

Golden Dawn will stage a rally later on October 26th to protest the jailing of its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, and two other lawmakers, on charges of running a criminal organisation.

"Today's gathering organised by Golden Dawn is a challenge against all of society," said Maria Bolari, a Member of Parliament from the leftist Syriza party.

"We are talking about an organisation that only wants its stormtroopers demonstrating on the streets. This criminal organisation is responsible for the deaths and injuries of both Greeks and immigrants," she added.

Another protester, Thanassis Korkoulas, said he was marching to prevent the extreme right from occupying the political "foreground".

Formerly a fringe party, Golden Dawn has seen its popularity soar in recent years as Greece has sunk into a financial depression and unemployment has spiralled.

Running on an anti-immigrant campaign, the party won 18 seats in Parliament and nearly 7 percent of the vote in 2012 elections.

Its members and supporters have long been blamed for violent attacks, mostly against immigrants but also against left-wing political opponents and gay people.

Golden Dawn denies any involvement.

It says the prosecution of its members is politically motivated.

On October 22nd, Greek lawmakers voted to suspend state funding for political parties accused of criminal activities, a measure targeting the Nazi-inspired Golden Dawn group.

RANDY QUAID, WIFE SEEK REFUGEE STATUS IN CANADA

Actor Randy Quaid told Canada's immigration board Friday that he and his wife are seeking asylum from "the murderers of Hollywood" and will therefore apply for refugee status in Canada, after they were arrested on U.S. warrants related to vandalism charges.

The pair were arrested on Thursday afternoon in a shopping area of an affluent Vancouver neighborhood and were jailed on outstanding U.S. Warrants.

The Quaids are wanted in Santa Barbara, where they missed a court hearing Monday on felony vandalism charges.

The Quaids were ordered released from custody Friday, but must each post $9,750 bail and fulfill their promise to appear for their next hearing Thursday.

Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said Friday that Quaid and his wife Evi's bail increased to $500,000 apiece.

Their attorney, Robert Sanger, said he hoped the situation could be resolved but declined comment citing the pending case.

The couple told the immigration adjudicator they are being persecuted in the United States.

Evi Quaid begged a Canadian immigration adjudicator not to force them to return, saying on Friday that friends, such as actors David Carradine and Heath Ledger, have been "murdered" under mysterious circumstances and she worried something would happen to her husband next.

"We feel our lives are in danger," she said. "Randy has known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners ... We feel that we're next."

During a break in the proceedings, the Quaids' lawyer, Brian Tsuji approached the media to read a single-sentence statement from the Quaids. "We are requesting asylum from Hollywood star whackers," he read, declining further comment on the mental state of his clients.

Evi Quaid said she's been told by a jail nurse that her blood pressure is dangerously high due to stress and that Randy Quaid's mother has been hospitalized in the U.S. as a result of the stress from their legal troubles.

Friday's hearing was a mandatory detention review.

On Friday, the Quaids promised they would appear for their next hearing. Evi Quaid said she'd be willing to wear an ankle bracelet while staying at a posh Vancouver hotel.

Randy Quaid said the couple came to Canada because he was being given an award by a film critics group. He said they were considering moving to Vancouver where Randy planned to jump-start his career.

He said the pair believed the warrants were issued by mistake and had been withdrawn and the couple didn't travel north in an effort to skip out on them.

"Canada is a beautiful country for what we want to do," Quaid said outside the hearing room, without elaborating on his plans. Quaid was questioned by a reporter if the couple are dealing with a substance abuse problem, which he denied.

"It's been a very welcoming nation to me," he said. "I would not do anything to besmirch my reputation."

The Quaids face no charges in Canada.

A U.S. judge issued arrest warrants Monday for the couple after they failed to show up at a California court hearing stemming from their arrests last month on suspicion of illegally squatting at a home.

Quaid and his wife face felony vandalism charges after more than $5,000 in damage was found in a guest house of a Montecito, California home they had previously owned.

The Quaids frequently missed court appearances in an earlier U.S. case involving charges they defrauded an innkeeper. That case was resolved in April with Evi Quaid pleading no contest to a misdemeanor. The charges against her husband were dropped.

Randy Quaid, 60, is best-known for supporting roles in films such as "Independence Day" and "National Lampoon's Vacation." He is the older brother of Dennis Quaid.

Ledger was nominated for an Oscar for his lead role in the movie "Brokeback Mountain." He died in January, 2008 from an accidental overdose.

Carradine was star of the hit 1970s television series "Kung Fu" and also had a movie career before he hanged himself in Thailand last year. He was 72.

CANADIAN MAN WHO TRESPASSED AT HOME OF KENDALL JENNER ARRESTED

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Friday (29 MARCH 2019)  that 38-year-old John Ford was recently arrested in the parking lot of an Albuquerque motel after agents received a tip that he was in New Mexico.

Authorities say Ford has an expired visitor's visa. He remains in federal custody in El Paso, Texas, awaiting a hearing on his immigration case.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Los Angeles police have arrested him twice, resulting in misdemeanor convictions and jail time.

Jenner's family thanked Los Angeles police and immigration authorities for their swift response.

A French born US soldier is to receive the highest military honour the US can bestow later on Thursday.

Florent Groberg, a former track star at the University of Maryland, was a US Army captain in 2012 when he tackled a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.

Four people died in the attack; even more would have been killed if Groberg hadn't stepped forward.

The attack left Groberg's leg badly damaged, and he spent three years in recovery, undergoing more than 30 surgerical procedures at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Groberg says he sometimes struggled with why he survived when his colleagues were killed.

He said he's accepting the award to honour his fallen comrades.

US President Barack Obama will present the medal on Thursday in a White House ceremony.

YASIIN 'MOS DEF' BEY ATTENDS COURT HEARING

Yasiin Bey, also known as American rapper Mos Def, appeared at Bellville Magistrates Court in Cape Town Thursday (24 MARCH 2016)

Bey attended a hearing based around his January arrest at Cape Town International airport, when he attempted to leave the country with what he told officials was a "world passport."

The 42-year-old, born Dante Smith, is out on 5000 rand ($330 USD) bail and is due back in court on May 12.

A South African newspaper, the Mail and Guardian, said the New York-born Bey has lived in Cape Town since May 2013.

CHRIS BROWN CANCELS DOWN UNDER TOUR DATES

Chris Brown canceled plans for a Down Under tour Wednesday (2 Dec. 2015) after Australian authorities earlier warned the troubled R and B singer they were likely to refuse him a visa because of his criminal conviction for assaulting pop star Rihanna.

Ticketing agency Ticketek posted a statement from Brown's promoters saying the planned December tour of Australia and New Zealand had been canceled and those who had bought tickets would get refunds. In the statement, Brown thanked his fans and said he remained hopeful he could tour "in the near future."

Citing privacy concerns, Australia's immigration department on Wednesday declined to say whether they had refused Brown a visa. But in September, the department issued Brown a "notice of intention to consider refusal" which gave him 28 days to explain why he should be allowed into the country.

That notice came days after former Immigration Minister Michaelia Cash urged authorities to refuse the 26-year-old American a visa on character grounds.

"People need to understand if you are going to commit domestic violence and then you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you: 'You cannot come in because you are not of the character we expect in Australia,'" Cash, who is now minister for women, told reporters at the time.

As part of his tour, Brown had been scheduled to play one show in Auckland, New Zealand. Immigration authorities in New Zealand said Brown had withdrawn his application for a visa to work and travel there before they ruled on it.

New Zealand authorities said that because Brown had been banned from some other countries, he would have needed a special visa to be allowed entry. They said Brown had applied for a visa once previously, in 2008, which they had granted.

Brown could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday. In a September statement, Brown's publicist Nicole Perna said the singer respected Australia's right to review his visa request and had "faith that a decision will be made with the full consideration of his continued personal growth, on-going philanthropic endeavors and desire to perform for his fans."

Activists in Australia had campaigned to ban the singer from the country because of his brutal attack on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, hours before the 2009 Grammy Awards. He pleaded guilty to felony assault and was freed from probation this year.

The arrival of "American Gods" to the small screen, 16 years after the award winning bestseller it's based on was published, has proved unexpectedly timely.

As its stars, including Ian McShane, Kristin Chenoweth, Crispin Glover and Pablo Schreiber arrived at the show's premiere in Los Angeles, Thursday (20 APRIL 2017), lead Ricky Whittle noted the wait for a TV adaptation has been fortuitous.

"We've become by chance the most politically relevant show on TV, because we talk about immigration and racism, sexism, women's rights, gun control, you know and since this heated political climate came to light we've become incredibly important, to tell these stories," Whittle said, "I mean, we're not taking sides, we just want to raise conversation, we want the public to discuss, because these are very important themes and we don't want people to forget."

Co-star Schreiber explained the show's basic premise.

"The old gods are these thought forms that are brought over by other, people from other cultures brought their gods with them and then swiftly abandoned them for newer and shinier things, like gods of technology, gods of television, gods of media and now there's a war brewing between the old gods and the new gods," he said, "so conceptually it's also a story about immigration and how this country was founded on many voices and I think part of the conversation around this show should be we should listen a little closer to the voices that helped found this country."

Author Neil Gaiman admits he hadn't expected his story to become more relevant as time went on.

"You write a book 18 years ago and you figure it's going to become obsolete. I think a lot of it is because it was about trends that seemed to be happening in society. The oddest thing about 'American Gods' is it's still like that only more so. The changes that we've had to make are mostly decorative, they're mostly wallpaper. Shadow's wife Laura in the book is a small town travel agent, but there are no more small town travel agents, they have gone the way of the small town buggy whip salesman," he notes. "Now the technical boy rules our thoughts and our dreams, now media is queen of all of us."

The result is addictive, warns McShane.

"It's really great to look at, it's got a lot of big universal themes that we talk about, but it's not a polemic, it's not an op-ed, it's a visual, entertaining one hour piece of television which goes on and gets stranger, more interesting and stranger."

Whittle plays the show's hero, Shadow Moon, drawn into a hidden world by McShane's Mr. Wednesday.

He becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday - in reality one of the older gods on a cross-country mission to gather his forces.

"I play Shadow Moon, he is an ex-con released from prison two days early after his wife tragically dies in a car accident, so he's lost, broken, shell of a man, nothing really left to live for, kind of bumps into Mr. Wednesday, played by the incredible Ian McShane and his whole world is turned upside down as he is kind of provoked into believing in magic, in gods as he kind of builds this army of old gods to fight a new army of new deities," explains Whittle. "Poor Shadow, just stuck in the middle."

Moon's wife, played by Emily Browning, doesn't stay dead for long, however.

"She comes back under mysterious circumstances and she - for the rest of the season is just sort of like a rapidly decaying corpse," notes Browning, of zombie Laura Moon.

Schreiber helps things get stranger still, as leprechaun, Mad Sweeney.

"Surprising because I'm 6' 5", I know, you're making a funny face as most people will when they hear I'm playing a leprechaun, but it's true, I play a leprechaun," confirms Schreiber. "A heavy drinking, often fighting, aggressive, rough, mean leprechaun."

Joining the ranks of the old gods are Jonathan Tucker as god of mischief Loki - or "Low Key Lyesmith" - Yetide Badaki as the goddess of love and Kirstin Chenoweth as Easter - the goddess of fertility, Eostre.

"When I read the book I thought 'I don't want to take on such an iconic - she's got a presence and a spirit about her," admits Chenoweth, "let's just say you think it's one thing, but it's something altogether different. Don't get on her bad side

New gods include Gillian Anderson as Media and Bruce Langley as Technical Boy.

"My character is one of the new gods, essentially the chap who's going to really come in and ruin someone's day in a real practical sense," explains Langley, "but yeah, keep your eye on him, you never really know where he's going to go."

"Back to the Future" star Glover, who plays Mr. World for the new show, had a second reason to celebrate, Thursday - it was his 53rd birthday.

"I'm surprised at how old I am, but I actually always figured I would age naturally, I have hoped, so that's a good thing," he smiled. "But yeah, it's, those numbers, it's like, how did that happen?"

"In terms of a birthday party, this is a pretty cool locale," noted Langley, "So with that in mind, yeah, I'm really, really looking forward to it, it'll be lovely to celebrate with him."

A student protest in New Delhi turned violent on January 9th 2020 after police baton-charged demonstrators who were trying to march towards the President's residence.

Police, some in riot gear, detained several students and activists who had gathered to protest an attack at a Jawahar Lal Nehru University residence hall on Sunday night.

Eyewitnesses claimed police had been beating protesters with batons, and accused them of breaking the mobile phones of people filming the violence.

The protests, and subsequent police actions, come after the government brought in a new citizenship law, resulting in demonstrations and violent clashes around the country.

The clashes have so far led to the deaths of at least two dozen people.

The new Citizenship Amendment Act was approved by Parliament on December 11th 2019.

The law allows Hindus, Christians, and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion in Muslim-majority countries Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

The law does not apply to Muslims, prompting accusations of discrimination.

Despite violent clashes in some parts of the country, peaceful protests have been taking place in some states across India.

In Gauhati, Assam, protests took place with crowds playing drums and singing.

Demonstrators were joined by singer Zubeen Garg, who said the musical performances were an attempt to find new ways to protest.

In Bangalore, Karnataka, lawyers formed a human chain around the High Court and Legislative Assembly and chanted slogans against the CAA and and a proposed National Register of Citizens.

Muslim women marched with Indian flags and chanted freedom slogans in Kolkata on January 16th in a protest against India's new citizenship law.

The legislation and a proposed National Register of Citizens has sparked protests across the country since Parliament approved the measure on 11 December 2019.

The law allows Hindus, Christians, and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, but does not apply to Muslims.

Hundreds of women in Gauhati in the Indian state of Assam on January 19th protested over the country's contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Assam is the centre of a decades-old movement against illegal immigrants, where demonstrators fear an influx of migrants will dilute native culture and political sway.

The law follows a contentious citizenship registry process in Assam intended to weed out people who immigrated illegally.

Nearly 2 million people in Assam were excluded from the list, about half Hindu and half Muslim, and were asked to prove their citizenship or else be considered foreign.

The bill could provide protection and a fast-track to naturalisation for many of the Hindus left off Assam's citizenship list.

The law allows Hindus, Christians, and other religious minorities who are in India illegally to become citizens if they can show they were persecuted because of their religion in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

It does not apply to Muslims.

People across India have also been protesting against the law, with many of the protests elsewhere focusing on its perceived anti-Muslim bias.

Clashes erupted in New Delhi on February 24th between hundreds of supporters and opponents of a new citizenship law that provides fast-track naturalisation for some foreign-born religious minorities but not Muslims.

One police officer was killed in the violence, a police spokesman said.

The protesters were blocking a busy road in a northeastern district of New Delhi, replicating similar sit-ins in several parts of India since the law was passed in December.

The rival groups hurled rocks at each other in the area and set some vehicles on fire.

Police closed access to two metro stations in the area.

Also in New Delhi, dozens of supporters of the Communist Party of India protested against the visit of US President Donald Trump.

Anti-Trump street demonstrations also broke out in the cities of Gauhati in the northeast, Kolkata in the east and Hyderabad in the south

The protests against the citizenship law have erupted across India since the it was approved by Parliament in December.

Critics say that the country is moving toward a religious citizenship test.

At least 20 people were killed in three days of clashes in New Delhi apparently sparked by President Donald Trump's first state visit to India, with the death toll expected to rise as hospitals were overflowed with dozens of injured people, authorities said February 26th.

New Delhi's top elected official, Chief Minister Arjind Kerjiwal, called Wednesday for the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to send the Indian army to areas in a northeastern corner of the sprawling capital affected by the riots.

Police characterized the situation as tense but under control. Schools remained closed, and a ban on assembly continued.

The clashes between Hindu mobs and Muslims protesting a contentious new citizenship law that fast-tracks naturalization for foreign-born religious minorities of all major faiths in South Asia except Islam escalated Tuesday, according to Rouf Khan, 43, a resident of Mustafabad, an area in northeast New Delhi..

The violence cast a shadow over the first major visit to the country by US President Donald Trump.

Trump told reporters on March 25th that he had heard about the violence but had not discussed it with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Four convicts were hanged in India on March 20th for the 2012 gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a moving bus in New Delhi.

The men were hanged at Tihar Jail in New Delhi, Press Trust of India reported, quoting jail authorities.

Flag waving demonstrators gathered outside the prison gates with one man carrying a placard thanking judiciary.

The woman was heading home with a male friend from a movie theatre when six men tricked them onto a bus. They beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries on her.

She died two weeks later.

The shocking violence galvanized protests across India and prompted lawmakers to stiffen penalties in sexual assault cases.

Activists say new sentencing requirements haven’t deterred rape.

The last hanging in India was in 2013.

STORYLINE

John Lewis, a lion of the civil rights movement whose bloody beating by Alabama state troopers in 1965 helped galvanize opposition to racial segregation, and who went on to a long and celebrated career in Congress, died. He was 80.

Lewis’s announcement in late December 2019 that he had been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer - “I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now,” he said - inspired tributes from both sides of the aisle, and an unstated accord that the likely passing of this Atlanta Democrat would represent the end of an era.

Lewis was the youngest and last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, a group led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that had the greatest impact on the movement. He was best known for leading some 600 protesters in the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.

At age 25 - walking at the head of the march with his hands tucked in the pockets of his tan overcoat - Lewis was knocked to the ground and beaten by police. His skull was fractured, and nationally televised images of the brutality forced the country’s attention on racial oppression in the South.

Within days, King led more marches in the state, and President Lyndon Johnson soon was pressing Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act. The bill became law later that year, removing barriers that had barred Blacks from voting.

Lewis joined King and four other civil rights leaders in organizing the 1963 March on Washington. He spoke to the vast crowd just before King delivered his epochal “I Have a Dream” speech.

A 23-year-old firebrand, Lewis toned down his intended remarks at the insistence of others, dropping a reference to a “scorched earth” march through the South and scaling back criticisms of President John Kennedy. It was a potent speech nonetheless, in which he vowed: “By the forces of our demands, our determination and our numbers, we shall splinter the segregated South into a thousand pieces and put them together in an image of God and democracy.”

It was almost immediately, and forever, overshadowed by the words of King, the man who had inspired him to activism.

Lewis was born on Feb. 21, 1940, outside the town of Troy, in Pike County, Alabama. He grew up on his family’s farm and attended segregated public schools.

As a boy, he wanted to be a minister, and practiced his oratory on the family chickens. Denied a library card because of the color of his skin, he became an avid reader, and could cite obscure historical dates and details even in his later years. He was a teenager when he first heard King preaching on the radio. They met when Lewis was seeking support to become the first Black student at Alabama’s segregated Troy State University.

He ultimately attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary and Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. He began organizing sit-in demonstrations at whites-only lunch counters and volunteering as a Freedom Rider, enduring beatings and arrests while traveling around the South to challenge segregation.

Lewis helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and was named its chairman in 1963, making him one of the Big Six at a tender age. The others, in addition to King, were Whitney Young of the National Urban League; A. Philip Randolph of the Negro American Labor Council; James L. Farmer Jr., of the Congress of Racial Equality; and Roy Wilkins of the NAACP. All six met at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York to plan and announce the March on Washington.

The huge demonstration galvanized the movement, but success didn’t come quickly. After extensive training in nonviolent protest, Lewis and the Rev. Hosea Williams led demonstrators on a planned march of more than 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama’s capital, on March 7, 1965. A phalanx of police blocked their exit from the Selma bridge.

Authorities shoved, then swung their truncheons, fired tear gas and charged on horseback, sending many to the hospital and horrifying much of the nation. King returned with thousands, completing the march to Montgomery before the end of the month.

Lewis turned to politics in 1981, when he was elected to the Atlanta City Council.

He won his seat in Congress in 1986 and spent much of his career in the minority. After Democrats won control of the House in 2006, Lewis became his party’s senior deputy whip, a behind-the-scenes leadership post in which he helped keep the party unified.

In an early setback for Barack Obama’s 2008 Democratic primary campaign, Lewis endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton for the nomination. Lewis switched when it became clear Obama had overwhelming Black support. Obama later honored Lewis with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and they marched hand in hand in Selma on the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday attack.

Lewis also worked for 15 years to gain approval for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Humble and unfailingly friendly, Lewis was revered on Capitol Hill -- but as one of the most liberal members of Congress, he often lost policy battles, from his effort to stop the Iraq War to his defense of young immigrants.

He met bipartisan success in Congress in 2006 when he led efforts to renew the Voting Rights Act, but the Supreme Court later invalidated much of the law, and it became once again what it was in his youth, a work in progress. Later, when the presidency of Donald Trump challenged his civil rights legacy, Lewis made no effort to hide his pain.

Lewis refused to attend Trump’s inauguration, saying he didn’t consider him a “legitimate president” because Russians had conspired to get him elected. When Trump later complained about immigrants from “s---hole countries,” Lewis declared, “I think he is a racist ... we have to try to stand up and speak up and not try to sweep it under the rug.”

Lewis said he’d been arrested 40 times in the 1960s, five more as a congressman. At 78, he told a rally he’d do it again to help reunite immigrant families separated by the Trump administration.

“There cannot be any peace in America until these young children are returned to their parents and set all of our people free,” Lewis said in June, recalling the “good trouble” he got into protesting segregation as a young man.

“If we fail to do it, history will not be kind to us,” he shouted. “I will go to the border. I’ll get arrested again. If necessary, I’m prepared to go to jail.”

In a speech the day of the House impeachment vote of Trump, Lewis explained the importance of that vote.

“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something, to do something. Our children and their children will ask us ‘what did you do? what did you say?” While the vote would be hard for some, he said: “We have a mission and a mandate to be on the right side of history.”

Lewis’ wife of four decades, Lillian Miles, died in 2012. They had one son, John Miles Lewis.

On July 27th lawmakers paid tribute to the late Rep. John Lewis, a long-time Georgia lawmaker and icon of the civil rights movement.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others attended a private ceremony in the Rotunda before Lewis' body is moved to the steps on the Capitol's east side for a public viewing, an unusual sequence required because the COVID-19 pandemic has closed the Capitol to the public. Inside the Rotunda and outdoors, signs welcomed visitors with a reminder that masks would be required.

Some of the lawmakers in attendance at the private memorial wore face masks reading, "good trouble," a reference to a famous quote by the late Lewis. An audio recording of a speech by Lewis was also played during the ceremony that included him explaining the need for civil disobedience and "good trouble" to rectify social injustices.

President Donald Trump on August 14th paid a visit to his younger brother, Robert Trump, at the New York hospital where he has been hospitalized.

The president entered New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan wearing a face mask.

“I hope he’s okay,”Trump said shortly before arriving at the hospital. "He’s having a tough time.”

The hospital visit came ahead of Trump's scheduled weekend trip to his private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The White House did not immediately release details about why Robert Trump, who is 72, had been hospitalized, but officials said that he was seriously ill.

Robert Trump, one of the president's four siblings, recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Trump family seeking to stop publication of a tell-all book by the president’s niece Mary titled “Too Much and Never Enough."

Robert Trump had previously worked for his older brother as a top executive at the Trump Organization.

Once a regular bold face name in Manhattan's social pages, he has kept a lower profile in recent years.

He married his longtime girlfriend, Ann Marie Pallan, in March, according to the New York Post. He divorced his first wife, Blaine Trump, more than a decade ago.

In a 2016 interview with the New York Post, he described himself as a big supporter of his brother's run for the White House.

“I support Donald one thousand percent,” Robert Trump said.

Former White House adviser Steve Bannon was arrested on August 20th on charges that he and three others ripped off donors to an online fundraising scheme “We Build The Wall.”

The charges were contained in an indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Bannon and three others “orchestrated a scheme to defraud hundreds of thousands of donors” in connection with an online crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $25 million to build a wall along the southern border of the United States.

A phone at the office of Bannon's lawyer went unanswered Thursday morning. A spokeswoman for Bannon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

US President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, was pulled from a luxury yacht and arrested on August 20th on allegations that he and three associates ripped off donors trying to fund a southern border wall.

He's the latest in a long list of Trump allies to be charged with a crime.

The organizers of the “We Build The Wall” group portrayed themselves as eager to help the president build a “big beautiful” barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border, as he had promised during the 2016 campaign.

They raised more than $25 million from thousands of donors and pledged that 100% of the money would be used for the project.

But according to the criminal charges unsealed Thursday, much of the money never made it to the wall.

Instead, it was used to line the pockets of group members, including Bannon, who served in Trump's White House and worked for his campaign.

He allegedly took over $1 million, using some to secretly pay co-defendant Brian Kolfage, the founder of the project, and to cover hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal expenses.

Hours after his arrest, Bannon pleaded not guilty during an appearance in a Manhattan federal court.

He is the latest addition to a startlingly long list of Trump associates who have been prosecuted, including his former campaign chair, Paul Manafort, whom Bannon replaced, his longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, and his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Trump has also made clear that he is willing to use his near-limitless pardon power to help political allies escape legal jeopardy, most recently commuting the sentence of longtime political adviser Roger Stone.

Bannon was taken into custody around 7 a.m. by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on a 150-foot (45-meter) luxury yacht called Lady May, which was off the coast of Connecticut, authorities said.

The boat is owned by exiled Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui and currently for sale for nearly $28 million. According to Marine Traffic, a commercial tracking service, the vessel's transponder signal went dark on June 17, shortly after it departed a port in Connecticut en route to Miami, potentially indicating its beacon was inoperable or had been turned off.

At his hearing later on August 20th, Bannon appeared with his hands cuffed in front of him and a white mask covering most of his face.

He rocked back and forth on a chair in a holding cell where he appeared via video with his lawyers on the telephone.

The magistrate judge approved Bannon’s release on $5 million bail, secured by $1.75 million in assets.

Neither Bannon, nor his spokesperson or attorney responded to requests for comment on August 20th.

After the arrest, Trump quickly distanced himself from Bannon and the project.

A bronze statue representing US First Lady Melania Trump was on September 15th unveiled in her native Slovenia to replace a wooden one that was set on fire in July.

The new sculpture is a replica of the original one that was commissioned by US artist Brad Downey and placed near Trump's home town of Sevnica, in central Slovenia.

The original statue - carved by local folk artist Ales Zupevc - was torched by unknown arsonists on July 4th 2020.

It was carved in a linden tree and pained in light blue to resemble Trump's outfit at her husband's swearing in ceremony.

The sculpture bares no obvious resemblance to the US first lady.

A group of locals gathered at the site watching as the new statue was unveiled.

Zupevc climbed the wooden stand, smiling as he stood by the life-size sculpture.

A plaque reads that it is "dedicated to the eternal memory of a monument to Melania which stood at this location."

Born Melanija Knavs in nearby Novo Mesto in 1970, the new U.S. first lady grew up in Sevnica while Slovenia was part of the Communist-ruled former Yugoslavia.

A country of some 2 million people, Slovenia is an Alpine nation, known as nature-loving and environment-friendly.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a diminutive yet towering women’s rights champion who became the court’s second female justice, died on September 18th at her home in Washington. She was 87.

Ginsburg died of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer, the court said.

Her death just over six weeks before Election Day is likely to set off a heated battle over whether President Donald Trump should nominate, and the Republican-led Senate should confirm, her replacement, or if the seat should remain vacant until the outcome of his race against Democrat Joe Biden is known.

Chief Justice John Roberts mourned Ginsburg’s passing. “Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her - a tireless and resolute champion of justice,” Roberts said in a statement.

Ginsburg announced in July that she was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for lesions on her liver, the latest of her several battles with cancer.

Ginsburg spent her final years on the bench as the unquestioned leader of the court’s liberal wing and became something of a rock star to her admirers. Young women especially seemed to embrace the court’s Jewish grandmother, affectionately calling her the Notorious RBG, for her defense of the rights of women and minorities, and the strength and resilience she displayed in the face of personal loss and health crises.

Those health issues included five bouts with cancer beginning in 1999, falls that resulted in broken ribs, insertion of a stent to clear a blocked artery and assorted other hospitalizations after she turned 75.

She resisted calls by liberals to retire during Barack Obama’s presidency at a time when Democrats held the Senate and a replacement with similar views could have been confirmed. Instead, Trump will almost certainly try to push Ginsburg’s successor through the Republican-controlled Senate - and move the conservative court even more to the right.

Ginsburg antagonized Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign in a series of media interviews, including calling him a faker. She soon apologized.

Her appointment by President Bill Clinton in 1993 was the first by a Democrat in 26 years. She initially found a comfortable ideological home somewhere left of center on a conservative court dominated by Republican appointees. Her liberal voice grew stronger the longer she served.

Ginsburg was a mother of two, an opera lover and an intellectual who watched arguments behind oversized glasses for many years, though she ditched them for more fashionable frames in her later years. At argument sessions in the ornate courtroom, she was known for digging deep into case records and for being a stickler for following the rules.

She argued six key cases before the court in the 1970s when she was an architect of the women’s rights movement. She won five.

“Ruth Bader Ginsburg does not need a seat on the Supreme Court to earn her place in the American history books,” Clinton said at the time of her appointment. “She has already done that.”

On the court, where she was known as a facile writer, her most significant majority opinions were the 1996 ruling that ordered the Virginia Military Institute to accept women or give up its state funding, and the 2015 decision that upheld independent commissions some states use to draw congressional districts.

Besides civil rights, Ginsburg took an interest in capital punishment, voting repeatedly to limit its use. During her tenure, the court declared it unconstitutional for states to execute the intellectually disabled and killers younger than 18.

In addition, she questioned the quality of lawyers for poor accused murderers. In the most divisive of cases, including the Bush v. Gore decision in 2000, she was often at odds with the court’s more conservative members - initially Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia, Anthony M. Kennedy and Clarence Thomas.

The division remained the same after John Roberts replaced Rehnquist as chief justice, Samuel Alito took O’Connor’s seat, and, under Trump, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh joined the court, in seats that had been held by Scalia and Kennedy, respectively.

Ginsburg would say later that the 5-4 decision that settled the 2000 presidential election for Republican George W. Bush was a “breathtaking episode” at the court.

She was perhaps personally closest on the court to Scalia, her ideological opposite. Ginsburg once explained that she took Scalia’s sometimes biting dissents as a challenge to be met. “How am I going to answer this in a way that’s a real putdown?” she said.

When Scalia died in 2016, also an election year, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to act on Obama's nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to fill the opening. The seat remained vacant until after Trump's surprising presidential victory. McConnell has said he would move to confirm a Trump nominee if there were a vacancy this year.

Reached by phone late Friday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, declined to disclose any plans. He said a statement would be forthcoming.

Ginsburg authored powerful dissents of her own in cases involving abortion, voting rights and pay discrimination against women. She said some were aimed at swaying the opinions of her fellow judges while others were “an appeal to the intelligence of another day” in the hopes that they would provide guidance to future courts.

“Hope springs eternal,” she said in 2007, “and when I am writing a dissent, I’m always hoping for that fifth or sixth vote - even though I’m disappointed more often than not.”

She wrote memorably in 2013 that the court’s decision to cut out a key part of the federal law that had ensured the voting rights of Black people, Hispanics and other minorities was “like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.”

Change on the court hit Ginsburg especially hard. She dissented forcefully from the court’s decision in 2007 to uphold a nationwide ban on an abortion procedure that opponents call partial-birth abortion. The court, with O’Connor still on it, had struck down a similar state ban seven years earlier. The “alarming” ruling, Ginsburg said, “cannot be understood as anything other than an effort to chip away at a right declared again and again by this court - and with increasing comprehension of its centrality to women’s lives.”

In 1999, Ginsburg had surgery for colon cancer and received radiation and chemotherapy. She had surgery again in 2009 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and in December 2018 for cancerous growths on her left lung. Following the last surgery, she missed court sessions for the first time in more than 25 years on the bench.

Ginsburg also was treated with radiation for a tumor on her pancreas in August 2019. She maintained an active schedule even during the three weeks of radiation. When she revealed a recurrence of her cancer in July 2020, Ginsburg said she remained “fully able” to continue as a justice.

Joan Ruth Bader was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, the second daughter in a middle-class family. Her older sister, who gave her the lifelong nickname “Kiki,” died at age 6, so Ginsburg grew up in Brooklyn’s Flatbush section as an only child. Her dream, she has said, was to be an opera singer.

Ginsburg graduated at the top of her Columbia University law school class in 1959 but could not find a law firm willing to hire her. She had “three strikes against her” - for being Jewish, female and a mother, as she put it in 2007.

She had married her husband, Martin, in 1954, the year she graduated from Cornell University. She attended Harvard University’s law school but transferred to Columbia when her husband took a law job there. Martin Ginsburg went on to become a prominent tax attorney and law professor. Martin Ginsburg died in 2010. She is survived by two children, Jane and James, and several grandchildren.

Ginsburg once said that she had not entered the law as an equal-rights champion. “I thought I could do a lawyer’s job better than any other,” she wrote. “I have no talent in the arts, but I do write fairly well and analyze problems clearly.”

People are continuing to pay their respects outside the US Supreme Court as they reflect on the legacy of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and come to terms with the approaching power struggle to fill her vacant seat.

Scores of flowers, pictures, candles, and small American flags were left near the Washington DC courthouse, along with and handwritten condolence messages and quotes from Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87 after 27 years on the court.

Angel Smith, a furloughed worker, came up from Richmond, Virginia just to celebrate Ginsburg at the growing memorial.

She said it was disheartening to see some people already move on to discussing her passing as an opportunity to replace her.

"I just hope that the next person is somebody who could be on that same level as her," Smith said. "Her final wishes were appropriate, and I think they should be respected. And after I put down my flowers and my sign and my candle, I came off to the side and I said a prayer for this country. I asked that they honor her wishes and that they wait."

President Donald Trump's has said he would nominate a conservative woman to replace Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on September 18th at the age of 87.

Trump, who will announce his nominee on September 19th, says he's confident his choice will be confirmed, but some disagreement is forming on whether the pick should focus on cementing the conservative majority on the court, or assist in Trump's reelections efforts.

Mark Sherman, a Supreme Court Reporter for the Associated Press, said five women are rounding out Trump's Supreme Court pick shortlist: Amy Coney Barrett, Barbara Lagoa, Joan Larsen, Allison Rushing, and Kate Todd.

"They have in common that they're all well-regarded conservatives. Four of them are federal judges, and the fifth is a lawyer in the White House," Sherman said.

Barrett, 48, is widely considered to be the front-runner. She was previously considered as a finalist for Trump's second nomination to the high court, which eventually went to Justice Brett Kavanaugh. A devout Catholic mother of seven, she is a favorite of religious conservatives and considered a strong opponent of abortion.

"She has a long history in conservative circles. She was a clerk at one point to Justice Scalia when he was on the Supreme Court," Sherman said. "We do know from her record that she has raised questions about abortion rights and also suggested that there are many more abortion restrictions that she would find allowable under the law than, say, Justice Ginsburg did."

Lagoa, 52, is a Cuban American judge from Florida who was nominated by Trump to serve on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2019. Her name was on the White House's list of potential high court contenders released earlier this month.

Raised in the heavily Latino Miami suburb of Hialeah, Lagoa is the daughter of Cuban exiles who fled the communist regime of Fidel Castro. She speaks fluent Spanish and has a solidly conservative judicial record.

"Picking Lagoa could perhaps help him win more of the Cuban vote, which is an important constituent part of the Hispanic vote in Florida," Sherman said. "And if the vote in Florida is close... any little edge could be decisive."

Larsen, 51, was a little-known University of Michigan legal scholar until 2015, when then- Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, tapped her to fill a vacant seat on the Michigan Supreme Court.

After Trump won the presidency and the Michigan electoral college in 2016, he quickly sought to elevate Larsen to the federal bench, tapping her in May 2017 to fill a vacant seat on the Cincinnati-based 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Rushing, 38, was confirmed just 18 months ago to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond. If elevated to the Supreme Court, she would be the youngest justice confirmed since the early 1800s.

She is a native of Hendersonville, North Carolina. Her potential selection is being championed within the White House by chief of staff Mark Meadows, who also hails from the mountains of the Tarheel State.

Todd, 45, is the only lawyer on Trump's potential shortlist for the Supreme Court who has never served as a judge.

A deputy White House counsel, her close connection to the Trump administration could give an opening to Democrats to attack her independence and relative lack of experience. However, her lack of a judicial record also leaves little paper trail for opponents to sort through for material to attack.

"The president has said he will make a nomination public on September 19th," Sherman said. "And there is the at least the possibility that Republicans, with their majority in the Senate and no procedural hurdles, really could perhaps confirm a new justice before the election. Remains to be seen if they will, but that's certainly a possibility."

Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden were in Washington on September 25th to pay their respects to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

They were invited to attend the special ceremony at the Capitol to commemorate Ginsburg lying in state.

Biden said he met Ginsburg for the first time when he was chairman of the committee that oversaw her confirmation hearing.

Services were brief, with the rabbi’s reflections and prayer, before guests lined up to pass by the casket and pay their respects.

Members of the House and Senate who were not invited to the ceremony because of space limitations imposed by the coronavirus pandemic will be able to pay their respects before a motorcade carrying Ginsburg’s casket departs the Capitol in the early afternoon.

The honor of lying in state has been accorded fewer than three dozen times, mostly to presidents, vice presidents, and members of Congress.

Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights icon, was the most recent person to lie in state following his death in July. Henry Clay, the Kentucky lawmaker who served as Speaker of the House and also was a senator, was the first in 1852.

Rosa Parks - a private citizen, not a government official - is the only woman who has lain in honor, a separate commemoration, at the Capitol.

Ginsburg had lain in repose for two days at the Supreme Court, where thousands of people paid their respects outside, including President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump on September 24th. Spectators booed and chanted “vote him out” as the president, who wore a mask, stood silently near Ginsburg’s casket at the top of the court’s front steps.

Trump plans to announce his nomination September 19th of a woman to take Ginsburg’s place on the high court, where she served for 27 years and was the leader of the liberal justices.

Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court, will be buried next week in Arlington National Cemetery beside her husband, Martin, who died in 2010.

DARFUR ACTIVIST MIA FARROW QUESTIONED IN HONG KONG AHEAD OF BEIJING TORCH RELAY

Hollywood actress Mia Farrow was briefly questioned at Hong Kong airport on Thursday before officials allowed her to enter Chinese territory to give a speech criticising China's relations with Sudan.

Officials stamped Farrow's passport after they asked her not to disrupt the Olympic torch relay on Friday, said Jill Savitt, an activist travelling with the actress.

Farrow's visit to Hong Kong was seen as a test of how free the city dared to be whilst hosting the torch.

Officials were under great pressure to ensure a trouble-free relay, and they have deported several activists upon arrival in the past few days.

On Thursday, AP Television News filmed Farrow as she arrived in Hong Kong on a flight from New York.

After she stepped up to the immigration desk to have her passport stamped, an officer talked to her briefly and called over another official.

Farrow was then asked to step over to the other side of the passport counter, where she was escorted away by immigration officers.

After about half an hour, Farrow and Savitt were allowed to pick up their luggage and enter Hong Kong.

Speaking to waiting journalists after, Farrow said immigration officials were ''very nice and very polite.''

"They wanted our reassurance that we were not here to disrupt the torch relay, which of course we are not," she said.

Blocking Farrow from entering Hong Kong would have sparked a firestorm of criticism and sullied the city's reputation for being a base for civil liberties in China.

But allowing Farrow into the city may attract attention away from the torch relay and embarrass Beijing's leadership.

She plans to speak about Sudan on Friday, at the Foreign Correspondents' Club.

During the relay, Farrow plans to make a "small symbolic gesture," Savitt told the Associated Press without elaborating.

Farrow has been one of the most vocal celebrities about Darfur, a region in Sudan where about 200-thousand people have died and 2.5 (m) million have been forced from their homes - amidst four years of fighting between local rebels and government-allied janjaweed militias that human rights groups have accused of atrocities.

The bloodshed began in 2003 when ethnic African tribesman took up arms, complaining of decades of neglect and discrimination by the Sudanese Arab-dominated government.

China has been one of Sudan's biggest trading partners, buying oil from the African nation and selling the country weapons.

Activists call for Beijing to use its influence to pressure Sudan to stop the violence.
