JOHN LEGEND ON TRUMP'S TRAVEL BAN: 'HE IS AN ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY'

Celebrities arrived to the Producer's Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday (28JAN2017) night as protests sparked around the country in response to President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The executive order bans legal U.S. residents and visaholders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.

"We support the protests," said John Legend on the red carpet before the PGA ceremony. "We donated to ACLU today and we are grateful that they were in court in Brooklyn defending the rights of immigrants and refugees to come to this country. And we reject Donald Trump's message of fear and hate and we encourage everybody out there to speak out against it. Call your Congress people, support ACLU, support IRC and all those organizations that are speaking out for immigrants and refugees. And we're going to defeat him. He is an enemy of democracy. He's an enemy of freedom. He's an enemy of inclusion and he's going to lose."

Legend, who participated in the Women's March along with his wife Chrissy Teigen, said he will do whatever he can to help the protesters.

"Chrissy marched in D.C. I marched at Sundance and we're going to do whatever we can to resist his evil regime," he said.

Legend was on hand to support "La La Land," which he appeared in and served as an executive producer on. The retro musical reaped a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and was also vying for top honors at the PGAs.

A protest at John F. Kennedy airport, where 12 refugees were detained Saturday, swelled to more than 2,000 people, including some celebrities. Protesters also converged in Newark, New Jersey, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

"Lion" star and Oscar nominee Dev Patel called the travel ban "heartbreaking."

"I mean it's completely heartbreaking to be honest. I just flew in from India yesterday and to arrive to such devastating news of such a divisive nature, it's terrible. It's heartbreaking," he said.

Trump's order immediately suspended a program that last year resettled to the U.S. roughly 85,000 people displaced by war, political oppression, hunger and religious prejudice.

He indefinitely blocked all those fleeing Syria, where a civil war has displaced millions of people, and imposed a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations.

This wasn't your everyday Hollywood facelift.

After a year-and-a-half of construction, the campus of The Television Academy was unveiled to the media and a handful of select guests on Thursday (2 JUNE 2016).

The Television Academy, based in North Hollywood, is home to the 22,000-member group that throws the annual Emmy Awards, and had not been significantly remodeled since 1991. In 2014, a $40-million (USD) capital campaign was begun to redevelop the theater and campus.

Now also sporting the name Saban Media Center, the complex boasts a state-of-the-art cinema, production bays, new office and event spaces, as well as a 4,500-square-foot event space.

The place is unrecognizable from just 18 months ago.

"Well, this is a chance for us to reimagine our entire academy," said Bruce Rosenblum, Television Academy Chairman and CEO. "It's such a great future for the academy. We've really set them on the right path. I think that from a foundation standpoint, from a philanthropy standpoint, we're really well set. We're building an endowment for them. We have a new alignment with the Alliance for Children's Rights for foster youth. It's just a great time to be both at the academy and also in the television business."

Emmy nominees, winners and television icons crammed the unveiling's red carpet, with "Glee" and "Scream Queens" actress Lea Michele adding fashionista flair. Icons included Emmy winner Bob Newhart ("The Bob Newhart Show," "Newhart," "The Big Bang Theory"), as well as cast members of "The Brady Bunch" and "The Love Boat."

"It's amazing to see all these people here that I've been fans of, that I've worked with, most of them, all at the same event," noted actor David Hasselhoff ("Baywatch"). "It's just a tribute to the television. In fact, it's almost intimidating, a little bit, because there are so many people here that I've worked with. I'm banging my brains."

The press will be back to the Academy campus, albeit in the wee hours, on 14 July for the Emmy nominations.

This year's Primetime Emmy Awards are set for 18 September at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS SNUBS: NO FEMALE DIRECTORS, ROBERT DENIRO AND ADAM SANDLER SHUT OUT OF BEST ACTOR CATEGORY

It's confirmed again, streaming services are leading the way and Monday (9 DEC) morning's Golden Globe nominations proved it.

Netflix dominated with 34 total nominations, including four films up for best picture and four series nominated for the top television awards.

"The headline today obviously I think is that Netflix scored the most nominations of any distributors in both the film and TV categories," said The Hollywood Reporter's staff writer Chris Gardner. "On the TV side they also are leading the pack with 17 nominations."

Also, Hollywood A-list star power is back with veteran nominees such as Tom Hanks, Joe Pesci, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lopez.

"It's going to be a really starry show this year and I think that's something, that is big. Oh, and wait, you can't forget Beyoncé and Taylor Swift too, so those are competing against one another in the original song category," added Gardner.

While the star power at the Beverly Hills ceremony will be obvious, what remains questionable is its continuing push for diversity. Both the Globe's executive producer and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's President think they "did a good job" when it comes to diversity within the long list of categories.

"At least at first glance, seem to see a lot of diversity being represented in all categories and I think that when you do that, you have to talk about both television and film and I think some of the things are concentrated in certain areas but I think basically it was a pretty good job," said executive producer Barry Adelman.

Variety's senior film awards editor Marc Malkin doesn't agree entirely.

"It's a little iffy when it comes to diversity. There are faces of color for sure in the nominations, but the majority by far, are you know, white celebrities, white talent, so they still have some work to do with diversity. One of the diversity contenders is Jennifer Lopez who snagged her second Golden Globe nomination, 22 years after being recognized for her work in "Selena."

Another missing name was Adam Sandler for his dramatic work in "Uncut Gems."

With Ricky Gervais back as the ceremony's host for the fifth time, the HFPA president joked there's no point in restricting the British comedian's humor.

The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards, which honor achievements in film and television, will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Jan. 5 and aired live on NBC.

(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service

(iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
