JOHN LEGEND ON TRUMP'S TRAVEL BAN: 'HE IS AN ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY'

Celebrities arrived to the Producer's Guild Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday (28JAN2017) night as protests sparked around the country in response to President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The executive order bans legal U.S. residents and visaholders from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days.

"We support the protests," said John Legend on the red carpet before the PGA ceremony. "We donated to ACLU today and we are grateful that they were in court in Brooklyn defending the rights of immigrants and refugees to come to this country. And we reject Donald Trump's message of fear and hate and we encourage everybody out there to speak out against it. Call your Congress people, support ACLU, support IRC and all those organizations that are speaking out for immigrants and refugees. And we're going to defeat him. He is an enemy of democracy. He's an enemy of freedom. He's an enemy of inclusion and he's going to lose."

Legend, who participated in the Women's March along with his wife Chrissy Teigen, said he will do whatever he can to help the protesters.

"Chrissy marched in D.C. I marched at Sundance and we're going to do whatever we can to resist his evil regime," he said.

Legend was on hand to support "La La Land," which he appeared in and served as an executive producer on. The retro musical reaped a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and was also vying for top honors at the PGAs.

A protest at John F. Kennedy airport, where 12 refugees were detained Saturday, swelled to more than 2,000 people, including some celebrities. Protesters also converged in Newark, New Jersey, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

"Lion" star and Oscar nominee Dev Patel called the travel ban "heartbreaking."

"I mean it's completely heartbreaking to be honest. I just flew in from India yesterday and to arrive to such devastating news of such a divisive nature, it's terrible. It's heartbreaking," he said.

Trump's order immediately suspended a program that last year resettled to the U.S. roughly 85,000 people displaced by war, political oppression, hunger and religious prejudice.

He indefinitely blocked all those fleeing Syria, where a civil war has displaced millions of people, and imposed a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations.

FEW HUNDRED ATTEND RAPPER'S GANG SUMMIT IN LOS ANGELES

Rapper The Game says he was moved to call together Los Angeles gang members for an anti-violence summit because he wants to help create a safer world for his children.

"I have children and I want (them) to grow up in a better world than the one I can see with my own eyes," said The Game after Sunday's summit in South Los Angeles.

An overflow crowd of several hundred gathered at a community center to hear pleas for peace from current and former gang members, entertainers, activists and preachers from the Nation Of Islam.

"You know too many people want to say we do this now and then change the direction as soon as we do one thing. No. What we do next is we do this again and we continue to do it until everybody gets onboard. You know it's like a bus going through the city, a bus of love and a bus of positivity. We want to keep the doors open. We want everybody to get on the bus. And this love and this positivity that we're preaching and change were about to bring about is free admission. All you got to do is get on the ride with us," The Game said during an interview.

Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck shook hands with The Game outside the venue in a show of unity. Beck said the meeting was a "great first step" in the right direction toward curbing violence, especially considering the police shootings Sunday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"I'm out here to support a message of anti-violence being put forward by members of the rap community, the hip-hop community, members of the faith community and some very, very significant community leaders. You know all of us recognize that this community, our community, is far too violent and we want to stop the violence, we want to stop the killings and you know then we can talk about some of the other issues. But first we've got to make this a safe community," Beck said.

Three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers investigating a report of a man with an assault rifle were killed Sunday, less than two weeks after a black man was fatally shot by police in the city during a confrontation that sparked nightly protests that reverberated nationwide.

"Of course officers, civilians, any life lost is a major deterioration of us as a people," said The Game of the shooting. "I don't like it and this is why we are here taking initiative and trying to change it. So you know peace and love and prayers go out to those families, but that's a tragedy as well as all lives."

The Game, born Jayceon Terrell Taylor, fought back tears as he recounted the recent shooting death of a former gang member he called Spanky. The pair grew up together in foster care in nearby Compton, he said.

"Me in my foster home, I was the only black dude in my foster home. I grew up with Mexicans only. And you know if a tear falls it's because ... it's because one of the cats that I grew up with in a foster home with, Calvin. His name was Spanky, he was from Playboy Gangster. Straight Mexican. That was more my brother than my own brothers," said The Game to the crowd.

"L.A., this is one of the biggest, best cities in the world. Not just the nation of America, in the world. And from this day out, politicians, mayors, president of the United States, all of them are going to be held accountable, everybody. But before we do that, we've got to hold ourselves accountable as people," said the 36-year-old multi-platinum selling rapper.

The Game put the word out last week on his active Instagram account, inviting leaders of the Crips, Bloods and other street gangs to come together for "Time To Unite: United Hoods + Gangs Nation." Dozens of gang members, some sporting red and blue colors, heeded the call and filed peacefully into the building to hear more than a dozen speakers. The neighborhood a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles has a large black population and has been plagued by random violence.

Aurora Hudson praised the decision to shine a light on "the brutality in our neighborhoods." The 25-year-old came to the meet-up from her home just blocks away and called it a positive experience.

"A lot of times when you look at the media and you look at the news you see different things. You don't see anyone talking about OK how people are uniting against gang violence, but it happens and it is important. And of course it is important for us as black people, they stop killing us - the police. But as well we stop killing each other and that's the important thing too. And if we unite as a group and end gang violence I think we can get a lot more things done in the community as well," said Hudson.

Veteran gang interventionist Alex Sanchez urged unity between Latino and black community members. Radio personality Big Boy, recording artist will.i.am and rappers Shorty, Problem and Bad Lucc were among the entertainers in the crowd. Security was provided by the Nation of Islam and there wasn't a big police presence at the summit.

Men need to have a "much-needed conversation" about their influence on young people and how to serve as better role models, The Game wrote on Instagram, where he has 6.6 million followers.

Earlier this month, The Game and fellow rapper Snoop Dogg led a peaceful march to Los Angeles police headquarters, where they met with the mayor and police chief and urged improved relations between authorities and minority communities.

The rappers are among many activists and celebrities calling for change following the police-related killings of black men nationwide and the shooting deaths of five police officers in Dallas by a lone gunman motivated by racial hatred.

GRIFFIN NOT 'LAYING DOWN' FOR TRUMP, FEARS CAREER IS OVER

An emotional Kathy Griffin says she's not afraid of Donald Trump and plans to keep making fun of him but maintained that she's sorry for a video that depicted her holding a likeness of the president's severed, bloody head.

At a press conference Friday (2 JUNE 2017), the comedian at times tearful and at times laughing and joking predicted her career is over and said Trump "broke me." Since the video was posted Tuesday, she has lost her job co-hosting CNN's New Year's Eve special and had at least four comedy shows canceled. She has also received death threats that she characterized as "constant and they are detailed and they are serious and they are specific."

Trump, first lady Melania Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have publicly criticized the video.

Griffin, who asserted that she has been contacted by the Secret Service, said the Trumps are "trying to ruin my rights forever."

Griffin, 56, repeated her claim that the video was a parody, meant as a pointed comeback to Trump's remark last summer that former Fox News Channel personality Megyn Kelly had "blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of wherever."

"I'm not laying down for this guy," she said in one defiant moment. "I'm going to keep making jokes about this guy."

Griffin's attorney Lisa Bloom said the comedian has a first amendment right to make fun of the president and accused the president of "using the power of the federal government against her."

Though Griffin apologized within hours of the images appearing online Tuesday, they were met with swift and widespread condemnation.

Trump later tweeted that Griffin "should be ashamed of herself" for posting the images.

The comic has faced controversies before for her abrasive humor, but none as widespread as the one generated by Tuesday's images.

Celebrities gathered at the Manhattan offices of the brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald Wednesday (11 SEPT. 2013) to take part in the firm's annual Charity Day on 9/11.

Among the personalities they came in and signed on to the board set up for participants was Kyle McLachlan. He said while the memory of the September 11 attacks still haunts him, he takes pride in looking at the memorial and the rising One World Trade Center building that replaced the fallen twin towers.

"It's like you said before, people get emotional. It's like every time I watch - I hear the Star-Spangled Banner or I watch the flag, even at a football game when they unfurl it there's a sense of pride that comes through and I think the memorial is just the indomitable spirit of not only America but just the ability of humans just to rise and get past a terrible tragedy like that and move forward."

The Cantor Fitzgerald Charity Day in Manhattan is an annual fundraiser to commemorate the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald brokerage employees who lost their lives in the attacks. Celebrities come to the brokerage now in Midtown Manhattan and talk on the phone with people who want to make a trade via the firm and get them to donate to their personal charities. Cantor Fitzgerald says that 100-percent of the money raised during the day goes to more than 100 charities worldwide.

Former athlete and current star of the reality TV show "Keeping up with the Kardashians" star Bruce Jenner said he came to represent his whole Jenner/Kardashian clan. "This morning I was listening to the news at - I think it's 8:46 - whatever it is - that's when the first plane hit. I think everybody in the whole country takes that moment just to remember what happened and my family's been very charitable throughout the year in support of so many different charities that coming here in supporting this one's really important to everybody - not just me."

For some, the attacks remain very present despite the passage of 12 years. Magician David Blaine spoke of the horror he remembers unfolding before him real time as he looked out the window of his Manhattan apartment in time to see the first plane hit the twin towers. "I have a telescope so I literally - when it first happened we didn't know it was a terrorist attack and I was watching and I was seeing people jumping out, which was just awful: couples holding hands and jumping out and that's why I think this is an amazing charity because they really do give all of the money to the cause."

"Law and Order" star Kathryn Erbe broke into tears as she talked of seeing the World Trade Center memorial lights brighten up the sky. "Where I live in Brooklyn when I walk out my door to walk my dogs at night before I go to bed I can see the memorial - those lights, which I feel, (starts to cry), is one of the most beautiful memorials there is. Sorry, it's really emotional. It's very, very emotional and so I find myself just saying prayers for many days leading up to this day and it was just such a sad time, just a horribly tragic thing at and yet I also remember how we came together as a city."

Cantor Fitzgerald says to date, Charity Day has raised about $89-million dollars around the world.

'BFG' STARS DISCUSS BRITAIN'S EU REFERENDUM

The intense debate over Britain's future in or out of the European Union came to Hollywood Tuesday (21 June 2016) as the stars of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" weighed in on the high-stakes issue at their film's Los Angeles premiere.

Academy Award winner Mark Rylance expressed his concerns about the EU referendum while remembering slain British lawmaker Jo Cox.

"It's a very big week and it's been really tragic to see the death of that wonderful woman, you know who such a compassionate campaigner. And just to see there are things about Europe that worry me. There are trade agreements. This horrible TTIP agreement is a terrible thing. I don't know why Obama is backing it. It gives corporations the right to sue us if we change our minds as a people. It's not democratic. But on the other hand, all the guys who are backing separation are so awful about refugees. They're all rather nasty businessman, like Rupert Murdoch. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. People don't know who they are and they feel betrayed by the government so have really sold out to business too often, too long. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"Downton Abbey" actress Penelope Wilton said leaving would be a "disaster."

"I want to stay in Europe with all my heart. I want to stay in Europe. I think it would be a disaster. We've had peace in Europe for seventy years and there's a lot of right-wing factions building up all over and it's very important that we stick together. 'BFG' STARS DISCUSS BRITAIN'S EU REFERENDUM

The intense debate over Britain's future in or out of the European Union came to Hollywood Tuesday (21 June 2016) as the stars of Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" weighed in on the high-stakes issue at their film's Los Angeles premiere.

Academy Award winner Mark Rylance expressed his concerns about the EU referendum while remembering slain British lawmaker Jo Cox.

"It's a very big week and it's been really tragic to see the death of that wonderful woman, you know who such a compassionate campaigner. And just to see there are things about Europe that worry me. There are trade agreements. This horrible TTIP agreement is a terrible thing. I don't know why Obama is backing it. It gives corporations the right to sue us if we change our minds as a people. It's not democratic. But on the other hand, all the guys who are backing separation are so awful about refugees. They're all rather nasty businessman, like Rupert Murdoch. So it's a very complicated issue. But I think like here in America there is a real anger and a loss of identity. People don't know who they are and they feel betrayed by the government so have really sold out to business too often, too long. And so you're seeing some rather nasty characters, like Mr. Trump in my opinion. And in England also, some nasty characters being promoted just because people are angry. They don't know who they are and what's going on. But these big businessman, they ain't the answer. You know we've got to get together, I think, more. Or the refugees. The refugees are climate change refugees. You can't be making wars like England and America are and then drop your arms saying 'we're not going to accept your refugees' when you've bombed their countries and depleted uranium. You asked me a question that's not the right one to ask me tonight. But anyway, there's my answer. It's a personal question for people," said Rylance.

Cox, a Labour lawmaker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees, was stabbed and shot to death outside a library in her constituency Thursday. The suspect gave his name in court as "death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

"Downton Abbey" actress Penelope Wilton said leaving would be a "disaster."

Sir Elton John hosted the 4th Annual Charity Gala on Wednesday night, for his AIDS charity, attended by a roster of A-list celebrities spanning the worlds of fashion and music

Bette Midler, Tommy Hilfiger, Joss Stone and Karl Lagerfeld, were among the stars who gathered at the glitzy venue Cipriani's, on Wall Street in lower Manhattan, to help raise cash for the highly respected Elton John Aids Foundation.

Elton said: "Aids has maybe disappeared off the newspapers a little bit because of the terrible catastrophes that have happened throughout the world this year starting with the tsunami and then with the hurricanes and the earthquake in Pakistan. People's, rightly, attention, happened to be focused on those people who need immediate help. But you just got to stay the course. "

Sir Elton John's fight against AIDS and HIV is tireless and the singer explained how his position in the entertainment world enables him to help others:

Elton John started the Elton John Aids Foundation in 1992 and since that time he has raised more than $60 million to support various AIDS support organisations around the world.

John told reporters that he started the foundation in the 90s because he felt that he hadn't done anything to fight AIDS in the 80s because of his own personal problems. After beating a cocaine addiction, he decided to make up for lost time.

The co-chairmen for this year's New York benefit entitled "An Enduring Vision," are Sir Elton John's partner, David Furnish, Ellen Barking and Ronald Pressman, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder, and Bette Milder, among others.

It's been 15 years since two planes slammed into New York City's World Trade Center, causing the collapse of the two buildings.

Louis C.K., who lived in New York at the time of the September 11th attacks says for him, it might as well be yesterday.

The comedian spoke Monday (12 SEPT) at the Cantor Fitzgerald Charity day. The financial firm, which lost 658 employees in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, marks the anniversary by raising funds for different charities. The event is a draw for celebrities who come in each year, representing charities they'd like to raise funds for.

"Twin Peaks" actor Kyle MacLachlan says if anything, the attacks bother him more this year than in recent history.

"For while I think there was a lull. I'd kind of like, 'Oh yeah, it's the 11th today,' and today making the 15th (anniversary) somehow it's come back and it feels, the emotions feel stronger than they have in the past couple years. "Star Trek" actor Zachary Quinto says helping others helps him deal with the memory of the day.

Several people at the event said it's important to make sure our memories of horror of the day does diminish.

Celebrity attorney Lisa Bloom has built a career defending victims of sexual harassment and assault. Now she says she's trying to "make a difference here on the other side" by defending movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday (6 OCT. 2017), Bloom both defended Weinstein and acknowledged he'd been "stupid." She saluted the women who have come forward to allege wrongdoing but said many allegations were overblown and consisted of Weinstein telling a woman she "looked cute without my glasses."

"He wanted to be respectful to women and he still wants to be respectful to women. And he's asked me, of all people, to help guide him in that direction, to explain to him the laws of sexual harassment and why this is important," Bloom said.

The New York Times reported that Weinstein had reached at least eight legal settlements with women over alleged harassment. The allegations have been levied by actresses including Ashley Judd and former employees at both the Weinstein Co. and Weinstein's former company, Miramax.

Bloom has long represented women in high-profile sexual harassment cases, including alleged victims of former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and model Janice Dickinson in her case against Bill Cosby. She said she met Weinstein a year ago after his company decided to develop Bloom's book "Suspicion Nation." She said she confronted him then about rumors of harassment in a "frank, blunt way."

"I was very surprised that he admitted to being stupid, to saying things that he shouldn't have said and I told him that needs to be your approach. You can't go back and change what's happened in the past but you can go forward and acknowledge it, ask for forgiveness, change your behavior," she said. "And I thought I had a chance to make a difference here on the other side. We'll see if I've done that right."

Weinstein's attorney, Charles J. Harder, said in a statement that the Times story is "saturated with false and defamatory statements." Bloom more gently poured cold water on the report, saying there have been some complaints against Weinstein but "not as many as" as the Times said. She added that some of the allegations were "incorrect" and that eyewitnesses had "a different perspective."

"Some of the allegations which I have read is, 'He told me I had a nice dress on.' 'He told me I looked cute without my glasses.' Probably he shouldn't be saying things like that in the workplace. Does that rise to the level of sexual harassment, legally? No, it doesn't," she said.

Bloom said Weinstein has anger problems and said he can be intimidating. She said he "knows he has to work on that" and praised him for acknowledging that he "hurt people." But she said that unlike at Fox News when women came forward with allegations of sexual abuse, Weinstein was not "trashing them, sending private investigators to dig up dirt on them, humiliating them."

"I salute any woman that comes forward with complaints of sexual harassment you know? Harvey has had to learn. This is not an easy time for him either. Probably nobody has sympathy for him right now and that's fine. But this is a guy who has thrown away the old playbook of let's attack the women, let's dig up dirt on their past, let's humiliate them, let's fight. He's not doing any of that."

It was 12 years ago but to Jaime Foxx, 9/11 seems like just yesterday. Foxx says he was in New York the weekend before but flew out the day before the attacks.

Today, the Oscar-winning actor says it's time to look forward, as long as we remember to keep the victims of the strikes in mind. "We showed up last night and drove past Ground Zero. All of those emotions rushed back. I think this is the day for all of us to put away all of our differences and really understand what America is about and the freedoms we are allowed and this is the greatest place in the world to live. We must protect that and wrap our arms around all of these people metaphorically and let him know that we still care. That's the most important thing."

Foxx spoke at the Cantor Fitzgerald Charity Day in Manhattan Wednesday (11 SEPT. 2013.) It's an annual fundraiser to commemorate the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald brokerage employees who lost their lives in the attacks. Celebrities come to the brokerage now in Midtown Manhattan and talk on the phone with people who want to make a trade via the firm and get them to donate to their personal charities. Cantor Fitzgerald says that 100-percent of the money raised during the day goes to more than 100 charities worldwide.

Billy Crystal was also there and remembered where he was on 9/11.

"I had just left (New York) after nursing my closest relative, and uncle, back to health for four months and moved him into a building directly across from the towers. He was a D-Day veteran who it seemed horrible things and was on the phone with me as the first tower came down and my daughter was living on the Lower East Side as an NYU student and she should she's the one that woke us up to tell us what had happened and we watched - as we all did in horror - as this mass murder occurred on television."

Julianne Moore says she was at the Toronto International Film Festival when the planes hit the Twin Towers but was deeply affected by the attacks.

"It's been a long time now I think. So everyone's reaction is somewhat different but it was a terrible, terrible day and it was such a ridiculous and tragic loss of life for so many people so it's nice to participate in something like this which is really about remembering them, honoring them and giving back."

Cantor Fitzgerald says to date, Charity Day has raised about $89 million dollars (U.S.) from around the world.

STORYLINE:

A smiling Paris Hilton walked out of a Los Angeles County jail early on Tuesday, officially ending a bizarre, three-week stay that ignited furious debate over celebrity treatment in the jail system.

The 26-year-old celebutante wrapped up her three-week stay at the all-women's jail in Lynwood at about 15 minutes past midnight, local time (0715GMT).

There wasn't much going on after Hilton's release, leaving media mobs waiting for the next step.

Outside Hilton's grandparent's house, where the heiress is believed to be staying, media from around the world awaited for the next development in the saga.

The crush of press vehicles and fans caused traffic headaches and flared tempers in the normally peaceful neighbourhood.

Outside Hilton's house a smaller group of media also waited for action.

Fans stopped by her residence earlier in the morning, leaving cards and balloons on her front gate.

Press outside the residence theorised about why they were there.

"Well this is a cultural phenomenon isn't it? Paris Hilton famous for being famous. Who knows why we are here. This is just another typical Los Angeles media circus," said Peter Bowes, a reporter for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In the early morning hours, AP Television stopped a woman, who remained anonymous, leaving Lynwood jail after visiting a friend of hers.

Since the woman's friend had only arrived the day before, she missed all the Hilton commotion.

However, the woman did share her previous experience as a prisoner at the jail house and noted, it was very embarrassing.

"When they line you up against the wall and have you spread open, your body and they are going around spraying something that smells. It's humiliating," she said.

During her stay at the Lynwood facility, Hilton was mostly confined to a solitary cell in the special needs unit away from the other 2,200 inmates.

Hilton will complete her probation in March 2009 as long as she keeps her driver's license current and doesn't break any laws.

She can reduce that time by 12 months if she does community service that could include a public-service announcement, the city attorney's office has said.

Hilton's path to jail began September 7, when she failed a sobriety test after police saw her weaving down a street in her car on what she said was a late-night run to a hamburger stand.

She pleaded no contest to wreckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and 1,500 US dollars in fines.

In the months that followed, she was stopped twice by officers who discovered her driving with a suspended license.

The second stop landed her in Sauer's courtroom, where he sentenced her to 45-days in jail.

She was released after three weeks for reasons including good behaviour.

STORYLINE:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nipsey Hussle's legacy as a persistent rapper, community activist, uniter, a doting father, a protective sibling and a loving son were underscored at his public memorial service on Thursday, with deeply personal testimonies from those closest to the rapper, including his actress-fiancee Lauren London, collaborator and dear friend Snoop Dogg and his mother, who said she was at peace with the death of her "superhero" son.

Beyonce and Jay-Z were among the big-name celebrities who attended the three-hour event in Los Angeles at the Staples Center, where the last celebrity funeral held at the concert arena was Michael Jackson's in 2009.

The arena was packed with more than 21,000 fans and drove home the important impact Hussle - just 33 when he died - had on his city and the rest of the world.

"I'm very proud of my son. My son Ermias Joseph Asghedom was a great man," said Angelique Smith, dressed in all white. Standing onstage with Hussle's father, Dawit Asghedom, she declared: "Ermias was a legacy."

London, who was in dark sunglasses, was emotional but stood strong onstage as she told the audience: "I've never felt this type of pain before."

London called Hussle "majestic" and "brilliant" and said she had learned so much from his presence. She added though she was hurting, she was really sad for their son Kross, whom she feared wouldn't remember his dad: "My pain is for my two-year-old."

Snoop Dogg's words to immortalize his friend were both serious and silly, as he told old stories about Hussle and their brotherhood.

"This a tough one right here," he said, visibly shaken but keeping his composure.

Snoop thanked Hussle's parents multiple times and told his father that "you picked up another son in me."

Hussle's father said he knew his son was strong because when he was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck but he prevailed.

"He was a fighter," he said.

Earlier in the ceremony, Hussle's children also appeared onstage to pay tribute. London's son with rapper Lil Wayne, Cameron Carter, said days after Hussle died, he had a dream he saw the rapper.

"I realized Ermias told me what heaven was like. He told me it was paradise," Cameron said.

Cameron then told the audience that Hussle would look at him through the window at times and say "respect." Cameron then asked the crowd to say "respect" in unison, and they complied.

Hussle was slain last month in front of a store that he tried to use to empower his South Central neighborhood.  The public memorial service kicked off by paying respect to Hussle the rapper, as songs from his latest Grammy-nominated album, "Victory Lap," filled the arena.

"Everybody put your hands in the air," the DJ said as one of Hussle's songs played. "It's a celebration."

Indeed, his mother danced in the aisle as R&B singer Marsha Ambrosius sang the Mariah Carey song "Fly Like a Bird" while fighting back tears. "This is for Nipsey y'all," Ambrosius said before she started as she tried to gain her composure, sighing heavily.

But soon the focus was squarely on the person behind the persona.  A montage of photos featuring the rapper from infancy, childhood and adulthood, with fellow rappers, his family and London, were shown to the crowd, set to Frank Sinatra's "My Way."

Stevie Wonder was the last performer to pay tribute to Hussle, who he said he had the chance to meet, saying: "We had a good conversation." Before he sang his song "Rocket Song," one of Hussle's favorites, Wonder denounced gun violence and told the audience "there's enough people being killed by guns and violence."

Anthony Hamilton invoked the spirit of a church service when he performed in Hussle's honor. Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan hailed Hussle's ability to bring different factions together. And blogger and media figure Karen Civil read a letter sent by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

"I've never meet Nipsey, but I've heard his music through my daughters, and after his passing I had the chance to learn more about his transformation and his community work. While most folks look at the Crenshaw neighborhood where he grew up and only see gangs, bullets and despair, Nipsey saw potential. He saw hope. He saw a community that even through its flaws taught him to always keep going. He choice to invest in that community rather than to ignore it," the Obama letter read. "He set an example for young people to follow and is a legacy worth of celebration. I hope his memory inspires more good work in Crenshaw and communities like it. Michelle and I send our sympathies to Lauren, Emani, Kross and his while family and to all those who love Nipsey."

Father Thomas Uwal read a scripture in Tigrinya - the native language in Eritrea, the African country where Hussle's father was from. Father Uwal spoke of Hussle being a "proud to be an Eritrean-American," later saying to the late rapper's family: "On behalf of all Eritreans ... we say our condolences to you."

Books with an image of Hussle on the cover were handed out to service attendees. The book of nearly 100 pages contained numerous photos of Hussle with London, his children, and friends like Russell Westbrook and Snoop Dogg. It also had heartfelt messages from Rick Ross, The Game and LeBron James.

"I've never cried myself to sleep over any public figure before, but Nipsey's presence meant so much for our community," actress Issa Rae said in her message inside the book.

The hearse carrying Hussle's coffin was scheduled to after the funeral to go on a 25-mile lap through the city, including past the property where Hussle had planned to turn an aging strip mall into new businesses and affordable homes. Finally, it will arrive at a funeral home in the city's hard-scrabble Crenshaw district, where the rapper was born on Aug. 15, 1985.

Hussle was shot to death March 31 while standing outside The Marathon, his South Los Angeles clothing store, not far from where the rapper grew up.

Eric R. Holder Jr., who has been charged with killing Hussle, has pleaded not guilty. Police have said Holder and Hussle had several interactions the day of the shooting and have described it as being the result of a personal dispute.

For a decade, Hussle released much sought-after mixtapes that he sold out of the trunk of his car, helping him create a buzz and gain respect from rap purists and his peers. His said his stage name, a play on the 1960s and '70s rhyming standup comic Nipsey Russell, was given to him as a teen by an older friend because he was such a go-getter - always hustling.

He charged $100 for his 2013 mixtape "Crenshaw," scoring a cash and publicity coup when Jay-Z bought 100 copies for $10,000.

Last year he hit new heights with "Victory Lap," his critically acclaimed major-label debut album on Atlantic Records that made several critics' best-of lists. The album debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's 200 albums charts and earned him a Grammy nomination.

Several women who've made strong and recognizable contributions to media were honored at the 2018 Women's Media Awards Thursday (1 NOV. 2018).  From movie stars to TV actresses to famed feminists, there was a diverse cross section of women all gathered to celebrate each other, as well as remind each other to stay diligent in the fight for women's equality.

Actress and activist Jane Fonda, co-founder of the Women's Media Center which hosted the awards, said it's vital that female voices are heard loud and clear:

"We're an organization that is fighting to have more women represented in the media because our, our understanding of life events, war, peace, health care, whatever, is different than men's," said Fonda.  "We experience it different, we understand it differently and if you don't have our narrative equally represented in the media, then women and men are robbed of half the story."

However, this political climate is unchartered waters for journalists with the rise of the "fake news", a term coined by President Trump.  He shares a tense relationship with the media - one that the country may not have ever experienced.

"Shortly after President Trump became president and assumed the office, I think one of his favorite targets has been the news media, you know, and saying that there's fake news when it doesn't fit, it doesn't please him or doesn't fit his agenda," said news broadcaster Katie Couric.

Couric also said the president's perceived bashing of the media might make it difficult for some to remain unbiased.

"I think it's really hard when there is a president who has challenged sort of the norms of conventional presidential behavior", she said.  "It's very hard, I think, at times for journalists to be unbiased.  I think that we really need to focus more on policy than personality."

But famed feminist Gloria Steinem said she believes what's currently going on between journalists and the White House is encouraging both young women and men to purse the craft.

"It does make it difficult, but it also has enraged women with its inaccuracy, with its idea that there are only two sides to every issue when in fact, the point is not to be balanced, but to be accurate," said Steinem, "and very often, outside groups haven't been part of either side, you know.  So just to make our own lives and real experiences visible is a huge motive.  There's actually more people enrolling in journalism school than ever before."

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, one of the targets in last week's mail bomb plot (24 OCT. 2018), gave the closing remarks at the awards show.  She said everyone needs to remain alert.

"It is a dangerous time.  And yes, for those of us who are threatened - well, many of us are accustomed to being threatened, you know.  I'm accustomed to being threatened, to be killed, all the time," she said.  But she added that while she takes her safety seriously, threats won't slow her down.

"Well, I'm careful, but I'm not intimated by it at all.  I'm careful and I don't do foolish things and I have security where I need to have security, and I keep doing what I do."

And Lisa Borders, the recently-appointed new president of Time's Up, said to expect more solidarity and demonstrations among entertainers during this year's awards season, but she wouldn't reveal too much.

"I can't spill the beans - our members in the entertainment industry would be very upset with me," said Borders.  "But suffice it to say their fire burns bright around this issue, they helped unearthed the issue and stood courageously in the face of a lot of criticism.  So we want to let them break that news for what we'll be doing during awards season."

STORYLINE:

Child welfare investigators earlier this year found there was no basis for allegations that Michael Jackson had abused the boy now accusing him of molestation, according to a confidential memo.

The memo from an administrator with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services was based on an investigation last February and was leaked to the Web site thesmokinggun.com, which posted it Tuesday.

A source familiar with the document confirmed its authenticity to The Associated Press.

The memo was dated Nov. 26, 2003 - a week after the Santa Barbara County district attorney announced child molestation allegations against the singer.

Both the boy and his brother told investigators Jackson had not sexually abused them, according to the memo. Their older sister said she had never

witnessed anything sexually inappropriate between her brothers and the entertainer.

The memo was sent from a regional administrator to bureau chief Charles Sophy and detailed a probe completed before Sophy joined the agency.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney Thomas Sneddon said in a statement that his office has been aware of the investigation and that it did not

affect his decision to pursue charges.

The report and the "totality of the investigation" were provided to the judge when the search and arrest warrants were issued for Jackson, Sneddon

said.

Jackson's defense is certain to seize on the memo.

The memo, which refers to Jackson as "the entertainer," said the department began a 13-day inquiry after a Los Angeles school district

official called its hot line Feb. 14 out of concern for the boy and his brother. The investigation was conducted with the Los Angeles police.

The school official suspected neglect by the boy's mother and sexual abuse by Jackson, according to the memo. But the department and the police concluded the allegations were "unfounded," the document said.

Louise Grasmehr, a spokeswoman for the child welfare department, said the leak would probably be investigated because the memo was supposed to be confidential under state laws designed to protect children. Police spokeswoman Officer Sandra Escalante had no comment.

Jackson was booked Nov. 20 on suspicion of child molestation. He has denied the allegations and was released on $3 million bail. Authorities said

they expect to file formal charges next week.

BILL O'REILLY OUT AT FOX NEWS CHANNEL AFTER 20 YEARS

Bill O'Reilly has lost his job at Fox News Channel following reports that five women had been paid millions of dollars to keep quiet about harassment allegations.

21st Century Fox issued a statement Wednesday that "after a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and Bill O'Reilly have agreed that Bill O'Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel."

He had been scheduled to return from a vacation next Monday. O'Reilly was photographed in Rome shaking Pope Francis' hand on Wednesday.

It marks a stunning end to a near-perfect marriage between a pugnacious personality and network. For two decades, O'Reilly has ruled the "no spin zone" with cable news' most popular show, and his ratings had never been higher.

In a memo to Fox staff on Wednesday, the Murdochs said the decision followed an extensive review done in collaboration with an outside counsel.

Fox said that Tucker Carlson's show would move to 8 p.m. to replace O'Reilly and that the panel talk show "The Five" would take Carlson's time slot at 9 p.m.

The fast-moving story took shape with an April 2 report in The New York Times that five women had been paid a total of $13 million to keep quiet about unpleasant encounters with O'Reilly, who has denied any wrongdoing. Dozens of his show's advertisers fled, even though O'Reilly's viewership increased. O'Reilly has denied wrongdoing.

Even though at least one of the harassment cases against O'Reilly dated back more than a decade and was widely reported then, the accumulation of cases outlined in the Times damaged him much more extensively. It wasn't clear when those stories would end, with a group of women demonstrating in front of Fox's headquarters Tuesday and another woman, a former clerical worker at Fox, calling a harassment hotline and accusing the host of boorish behavior.

"I'm not going away," said Lisa Bloom, attorney for the latest accuser and another woman who alleges her career stalled because she spurned O'Reilly's advances. "My phone is ringing off the hook."

O'Reilly's attorney, Marc Kasowitz, charged that his client was being subjected to a "brutal campaign of character assassination" and that there is a smear campaign orchestrated by far-left organizations bent on destroying O'Reilly for political and financial reasons.

Conservative personality Glenn Beck — who once lost a job at Fox News Channel because a similar campaign choked his program of paying advertisers — came to O'Reilly's defense of Wednesday, but it was too late.

"You need to write and call Fox News Channel today and tell them, you can lose your advertisers or you can lose your viewers," Beck said on his radio show. "But you have to put some spine back into the Murdoch family and the Fox News Channel board because you are about to lose Bill O'Reilly."

O'Reilly's fans aren't likely to be happy about him losing his job, particularly on a controversy set in motion by the Times. His show's viewership increased the week after the story appeared — O'Reilly didn't address it on the air — and has sunk since he left for vacation. Potential successors like Dana Perino, Eric Bolling and Greg Gutfeld have substituted for O'Reilly since he left for vacation.

Vatican spokesman Greg Burke confirmed O'Reilly was in the VIP section for the pope's Wednesday appearance. Burke, a former Fox News correspondent in Rome, denied having facilitated the tickets. Such tickets can be obtained via special request to the papal household from embassies, high-ranking churchmen or Vatican officials.

Francis always swings by the VIP seats at the end of his audience for a quick round of handshakes. A photographer from the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano snapped a photo of Francis reaching out to shake his hand.
