Veteran comedian and entertainer Bob Hope received an honorary knighthood in the U-S on Sunday.

At a gala event in Washington, he received the insignia of a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

It was given in recognition of the contribution London-born Hope, who will be 95 next week, has made to the world of comedy and film.

Bob Hope was honoured at a reception at the British Embassy in Washington D-C on Sunday.

Hope, who seemed a little overwhelmed by the occasion, did not comment after he was presented with the insignia by British Ambassador, Sir Christopher Meyer.

Among those present at the ceremony were members of Hope's family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren.

The award from Queen Elizabeth the Second was announced in February by British Prime Minister Tony Blair during a visit to the U-S.

Recognising Hope's contribution to entertainment, the honorary knighthood is also, importantly, a reward for his long record of entertaining military troops, dating back to the Second World War.

Christened Leslie Townes Hope, the entertainer was born in south London on the May 29th, 1903.

On news that he would be receiving the award Hope, who was made an honorary C-B-E in 1976, said it was "an honour for a boy born in England, raised in Cleveland and schooled in Vaudeville."

Hope now plans to donate his collection of more than 50 years worth of jokes, personal papers and radio, television and film material to the Library of Congress as part of a permanent exhibition.

The Hope family is also donating several (m) million dollars to fund the collection and a Bob Hope Gallery of American Entertainment, to be located in the library's Jefferson Building.

Meanwhile, Bob Hope, who is in frail health these days, lives in Palm Springs where he still manages the odd game of golf.

But his new honour will not afford him any special status on the green.

While an honorary knighthood is given to non-British or Commonwealth citizens, it does not entitle the recipient to call themselves Sir.

STORYLINE

This weekend, about 200 former prisoners of war in Vietnam, almost all of them former pilots, are reuniting for a three-day celebration at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum that coincides with the 40th anniversary of a star-studded White House dinner hosted by President Nixon to honor their sacrifice.

At the time, Nixon was embroiled in Watergate, but the former prisoners - now in their 60s and 70s - credit him with their freedom. Nixon resigned a little more than a year after the dinner as he faced near-certain impeachment.

Reminding Americans of that legacy - and not Watergate - will be front-and-center this weekend at the POW reunion, which began with a motorcade and tours of a special museum exhibit that focuses on the POWs'

homecoming.

The private Richard Nixon Foundation, which is hosting the event, has also recreated, down to the menu, the elaborate black-tie dinner that the president hosted for the POWs and their spouses 40 years ago this weekend.

Nixon wrote in his memoirs about the dissonance between the POWs'

adulation and the mounting Watergate crisis. But POWs who attended the event, however, recall only the thrill of meeting the president, rubbing shoulders with movie stars and dancing to a live band until 2 a.m.

The star-studded event included some of the most famous celebrities of the day, from Bob Hope and John Wayne to Sammy Davis Jr. and Liz Taylor.

The glamour was a far cry from what captives endured in North Vietnamese prison camps.

Through it all, the POWs waited for years for an end to the war and a freedom that never seemed to come. Meanwhile, in the U.S., anger and discontent over the conflict grew.

In December 1972, as peace talks stalled, Nixon authorized the biggest bombing of the war against North Vietnamese ports and factories. A second massive strike, known as the Christmas bombing, dropped explosives around Hanoi and the POWs heard the booming from their prisons.

A peace accord, formally signed in Paris on January 27, 1973, called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, a cease-fire and the release of all POWs.

Two weeks later, the first planeload of freed prisoners landed on U.S.

soil.

The Christmas bombing was widely criticized at home, but the POWs believe it secured their freedom.

"I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Nixon," Tyler said. "We need to go back to Nixon. And then go back to Reagan too."

EDDIE MURPHY WITHDRAWS AS OSCAR HOST

Eddie Murphy has bowed out of his gig as host of the Academy Awards, following pal Brett Ratner's decision to leave the show as producer because of an uproar over a gay slur.

The news of Murphy's departure came Wednesday, a day after Ratner quit as producer of the Feb. 26 show.

Ratner left amid criticism of his use of a pejorative term for gay men in a question-and-answer session at a screening of his action comedy "Tower Heist," which opened last weekend and stars Murphy and Ben Stiller.

Murphy's exit deprives Oscar organizers of a top star for an often thankless job that's tough to fill, since some past hosts have found little to gain from the gig and plenty to lose if they do a poor job as emcee of Hollywood's biggest party.

The two sides departed with cordial words, though.

"I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony," Murphy said in a news release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. "I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Academy President Tom Sherak bid Murphy farewell graciously.

"I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well," Sherak said.

Still, losing Murphy is a blow to a ceremony that has struggled to pep up its image amid a general decline in its TV ratings over the last couple of decades and a rush of hipper awards shows that appeal to younger crowds, such as the MTV Movie Awards.

Oscar planners have sought to shorten the sometimes interminably long show and have tried new ways to present awards in hopes of livening things up.

They also have experimented with unexpected choices as hosts, which worked nicely with the song-and-dance talents of Hugh Jackman three years ago but backfired at last season's show, when perky Anne Hathaway was paired with lackluster co-host James Franco.

When the academy picked Murphy in September, it marked a return to the traditional funnyman as host, a formula that delivered some of the best-remembered Oscar pageants when Bob Hope, Johnny Carson and Billy Crystal ran the show.

Academy officials would not discuss the personnel changes or plans to replace Ratner and Murphy. Ratner's producing partner for the upcoming ceremony - Don Mischer, who co-produced last year's Oscars - remains on board for the show.

Any decision on who will replace Murphy as host likely will not come until Oscar planners make a decision on whether to bring in another producer to work with Mischer.

Organizers still have plenty of time. The show is more than three months away, and much of the work in staging it has to wait until Oscar nominations are announced Jan. 24, anyway.

There's also no great rush to name a new host. The academy did not announce Hathaway and Franco as hosts until the end of November last year, while the announcement on Jackman three years ago did not come until mid-December.

Bob Hope died on Sunday night of pneumonia at his Toluca Lake, California home, surrounded by his family. He was one-hundred-years-old.

Hope was known as a star of vaudeville, radio, television, and film.

He starred in the "Road" series of movies with longtime friend Bing Crosby.

Hope also took his show on the road for decades to bases around the world to boost morale among servicemen from World War Two to the Gulf War.

He was born in England in 1903, but came with his family to the United States in 1907.

Hope spent his early years in Cleveland, Ohio, and affectionately referred to it as "hometown".

Hope is survived by his wife, Dolores, his four children, Linda, Anthony, William Kelly, Honora, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Daughter Linda said on Monday that a a private burial was planned, followed by a memorial service and tribute on August 27.

BEYONCE AND SHARON STONE BOOST U.S. TROOPS

Blaring rock, pop and hip-hop are nothing new at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps base some 90 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

But Friday night (01APR05), there was something completely different. The music was live, as Destiny's Child, Ted Nugent, Godsmack and a host of others performed for a crowd of more than 40,000, primarily troops and family members.

The show, dubbed, "Rockin' the Corps," is "a concert that we're putting on for the Marines coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq, and those deployed," producer Joseph Robert told Associated Press Television News. "It's a 'Thank you.' It's a 'Thank you' from America, for those Marines who are serving our country."

Some of the performers confessed they were getting a little something back, as well. For Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams, it was a look at "the troops, the soldiers, the Marines!" she gushed. "We talk about 'em in our song ("Soldier"), so we've really got to . . ."

Band mate Beyonce Knowles completed the sentence, ". . . see the men in the uniforms!"

Williams, Knowles and the third Destiny's Child member, Kelly Rowland, broke out in giggles.

Knowles then added that Destiny's Child had performed on military bases before, "but never 40,000 Marines. Never ever. And I know a lot of the Marines just got back to America from Iraq yesterday. So, this is a lot. This is a lot for us. This is historical for us, to be the people that they see with their families. And we've seen a lot of their wives and their children. And everyone's so excited and so happy, as well as us. And we're just proud to be here."

The stars had to rough it a bit as they spoke to press. Instead of a red carpet, the Marines simply laid squares of plywood over the sand leading to the beachfront that played host to the enormous outdoor stage.

Concert host Cedric the Entertainer (the upcoming big-screen "The Honeymooners") joked about makeshift arrivals line. "Oh, man! This is military right here," he observed. "I mean, we ought to talk to the government about getting a little more money out here. But we're walking on the sand, so you can't really do your carpet on sand. It gets dirty. Sharon Stone posed for photos with Marines. Carmen Electra appeared to be freezing in her sheer lime-green party dress. And Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora waxed patriotically about how Americans don't appreciate the homeland security provided by the military.

Once he finished, actor-wife Heather Locklear noted, "You know what I have to say? . . . During this whole serious thing, the Hooters Girls are over there!" ("Hooters Girls" refers to the often buxom servers found at the Hooters restaurant chain.)

Added Sambora: "I'm sure the Marines are going to be very happy to see the Hooters Girls and my wife."

The spirits were not always this high, as many show participants shared stories of and concern for friends and family in American military life. "Well, my father was in Vietnam," said musician Mary J. Blige. "And, to this day, he suffers, he smells burning bodies today. BILLY CRYSTAL HONORED IN A FUNNY, TOUCHING HOLLYWOOD-HANDPRINT CEREMONY

Comic-actor Billy Crystal had the attention of hundreds of onlookers Friday (12 APRIL) in Hollywood.

But for a moment, the Emmy- and Tony-winning actor, writer, producer and stand-up comic was neither funny nor acting.

As the 71-year-old Crystal was being honored with a handprint ceremony in the forecourt of the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, he reflected on growing up with his mother, father and two brothers on Long Island, and a home filled with music and comedy.

"You try to make your parents laugh, and that laugh becomes this delicious drink that I was always thirsty for," Crystal recalled. "All these years later, I think of all the times that we performed and dreamed about something like this happening -- never would have imagined that it could happen for me."

Crystal wouldn't attain huge stardom until he was nearly 30, in the groundbreaking role of the gay son Jodie Dallas on the ABC sitcom "Soap." By the late '80s, Crystal emerged a big-screen superstar, with a string of hits including "The Princess Bride" and "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987), "When Harry Met Sally ..." (1989) and "City Slickers" (1991).

And into the new millennium, the hits keep coming, with Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." (2001) and its sequel "Monsters U" (2013)

In 1990, Crystal marked his first of nine times as host and co-writer of the Academy Awards, earning him two Emmys. Only Bob Hope has hosted more ceremonies (19).

"I am wearing the shoes that I wore the first time I hosted the Oscars," Crystal joked at the handprint ceremony, continuing, "and they hurt, because I'm now retaining water. I save everything."

Crystal also won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event for the autobiographical one-man show, "700 Sundays."

Crystal next will be heard in a "Monsters at Work" TV series for the new Disney+ streaming-video channel, and in the upcoming live-action feature "Standing Up, Falling Down," set to have its world premiere 25 April at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

We could talk upcoming projects later. The ceremony was over, but Crystal wanted to stay in the moment.

ROBIN WILLIAMS, MANIC STAR, DEAD AT 63

Robin Williams, the Academy Award winner and comic supernova whose explosions of pop culture riffs and impressions dazzled audiences for decades and made him a gleamy-eyed laureate for the Information Age, died Monday (11 AUG. 2014) in an apparent suicide. He was 63.

Williams was pronounced dead at his San Francisco Bay area home on Monday, according to the sheriff's office in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The sheriff's office said a preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a suicide due to asphyxia.

The Marin County coroner's office said Williams was last been seen alive at home about 10 p.m. Sunday. An emergency call from his house in Tiburon was placed to the Sheriff's Department shortly before noon Monday.

"This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken," said Williams' wife, Susan Schneider. "On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. Just last month he announced he was returning to a 12 Step treatment program he said he needed after 18 months of nonstop work. He had sought treatment in 2006 after a relapse following 20 years of sobriety.

From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV show "Mork and Mindy," through his standup act and such films as "Good Morning, Vietnam," the short, barrel-chested Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement. Loud, fast, manic, he parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs.

He was a riot in drag in "Mrs. Doubtfire," or as a cartoon genie in "Aladdin." He won his Academy Award in a rare but equally intense dramatic role, as an empathetic therapist in the 1997 film "Good Will Hunting."

He was no less on fire in interviews. During a 1989 chat with The Associated Press, he could barely stay seated in his hotel room, or even mention the film he was supposed to promote, as he free-associated about comedy and the cosmos.

"There's an Ice Age coming," he said. "But the good news is there'll be daiquiris for everyone and the Ice Capades will be everywhere. The lobster will keep for at least 100 years, that's the good news. The Swanson dinners will last a whole millennium. The bad news is the house will basically be in Arkansas."

Following Williams on stage, Billy Crystal once observed, was like trying to top the Civil War. In a 1993 interview with the AP, Williams recalled an appearance early in his career on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Bob Hope was also there.

"It was interesting," Williams said. "He was supposed to go on before me and I was supposed to follow him, and I had to go on before him because he was late. I don't think that made him happy. I don't think he was angry, but I don't think he was pleased.

"I had been on the road and I came out, you know, gassed, and I killed and had a great time. Hope comes out and Johnny leans over and says, 'Robin Williams, isn't he funny?' Hope says, 'Yeah, he's wild. But you know, Johnny, it's great to be back here with you.'"

In 1992, Carson chose Williams and Bette Midler as his final guests.

Like so many funnymen, he had dramatic ambitions. He played for tears in "Awakenings," "Dead Poets Society" and "What Dreams May Come," which led New York Times critic Stephen Holden to write that he dreaded seeing the actor's "Humpty Dumpty grin and crinkly moist eyes."

But other critics approved and Williams won three Golden Globes, for "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "The Fisher King."

His other film credits included Robert Altman's "Popeye" (a box office bomb), Paul Mazursky's "Moscow on the Hudson," Steven Spielberg's "Hook" and Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry." On stage, Williams joined fellow comedian Steve Martin in a 1988 Broadway revival of "Waiting for Godot."

More recently, he appeared in the "Night at the Museum" movies, playing President Theodore Roosevelt in the comedies in which Ben Stiller's security guard has to contend with was figures that come alive and wreak havoc after a museum closes. The third film in the series is in post-production, according to the Internet Movie Database website.

In April, Fox 2000 said it was developing a sequel to "Mrs. Doubtfire" and Williams was in talks to join the production.

Williams also made a short-lived return to TV last fall in CBS' "The Crazy Ones," a sitcom about a father-daughter ad agency team that co-starred Sarah Michelle Gellar. It was canceled after one season

"I dread the word `art,'" Williams said in 1989 when discussing his craft with the AP. "That's what we used to do every night before we'd go on with `Waiting for Godot.' We'd go, `No art. Art dies tonight.' We'd try to give it a life, instead of making "Godot" so serious. It's cosmic vaudeville staged by the Marquis de Sade."

His personal life was often short on laughter. He had acknowledged drug and alcohol problems in the 1970s and '80s and was among the last to see John Belushi before the "Saturday Night Live" star died of a drug overdose in 1982.

Williams announced in 2006 that he was again drinking but rebounded well enough to joke about it during his recent tour. "I went to rehab in wine country," he said, "to keep my options open." The following year he told The Associated Press that people were surprised he was no longer clean.

"I fell off the wagon after 20 years and people are like, `Really?' Well, yeah. It only kicks in when you really want to change," he said.

Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams would remember himself as a shy kid who got some early laughs from his mother _ by mimicking his grandmother. He opened up more in high school when he joined the drama club and he was accepted into the Juilliard Academy, where he had several classes in which he and Christopher Reeve were the only students and John Houseman was the teacher.

Encouraged by Houseman to pursue comedy, Williams identified with the wildest and angriest of performers: Jonathan Winters, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, George Carlin. Their acts were not warm and lovable. They were just being themselves.

"You look at the world and see how scary it can be sometimes and still try to deal with the fear," he told the AP in 1989. "Comedy can deal with the fear and still not paralyze you or tell you that it's going away. You say, OK, you got certain choices here, you can laugh at them and then once you've laughed at them and you have expunged the demon, now you can deal with them. That's what I do when I do my act."

He unveiled Mork, the alien from the planet Ork, in an appearance on "Happy Days," and was granted his own series, which ran from 1978-82 and co-starred Pam Dawber as a woman who takes the interplanetary visitor in.

"I am completely and totally devastated," Dawber said in a statement. What more can be said?"

Following his success in films, Williams often returned to television _ for appearances on "Saturday Night Live," for "Friends," for comedy specials, for "American Idol," where in 2008 he pretended to be a "Russian idol" who belts out a tuneless, indecipherable "My Way."

Williams could handle a script, when he felt like it, and also think on his feet. He ad-libbed in many of his films and was just as quick in person. During a media tour for "Awakenings," when director Penny Marshall mistakenly described the film as being set in a "menstrual hospital," instead of "mental hospital," Williams quickly stepped in and joked, "It's a period piece."

Winner of a Grammy in 2003 for best spoken comedy album, "Robin Williams _ Live 2002," he once likened his act to the daily jogs he took across the Golden Gate Bridge. There were times he would look over the edge, one side of him pulling back in fear, the other insisting he could fly.

"You have an internal critic, an internal drive that says, 'OK, you can do more.' Maybe that's what keeps you going," Williams said. "Maybe that's a demon. ... Some people say, 'It's a muse.' No, it's not a muse! It's a demon! DO IT YOU BASTARD!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! THE LITTLE DEMON!!"
