The FBI (US Federal Bureau of Investigation) said on Friday that the case of the suspected child predator who worked in US schools around the world is certainly one of the most prolific suspected sexual predators the agency had pursued.

William Vahey, 64, committed suicide on March 21 in Luverne, Minnesota, two days after US agents filed for a warrant to search his computer thumb drive.

The FBI said the device contained pornographic images of at least 90 boys, aged 12 to 14, who appeared to be drugged and unconscious.

"The most important thing for us is to reach out to potential victims in this case, to give them a way to contact us confidentially, and to offer them assistance if needed, said FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap.

"Certainly, we're going to continue on with the ongoing investigation. Just because the suspect chose to not face justice doesn't mean the FBI's going to stop seeking justice," Dunlap also said.

The FBI has asked for international help to find victims of Vahey, who worked at 10 international schools around the world over four decades.

A British private school said on Thursday that images of between 50 and 60 of its students were found on the computer drive.

The FBI said the photos were dated from 2008 or after, but that Vahey may have abused children for decades.

In a statement, the FBI said Vahey had confessed to an administrator at his most recent school in Nicaragua that he was molested as a child and had preyed on boys his entire life, giving them sleeping pills prior to the molestation.

The agency said Vahey was jailed for child molestation in California in 1969.

The United State's Justice Department significantly eased restrictions on domestic spying on Thursday.

Its handed the FBI broad, new authority to monitor Internet sites, libraries, churches and political organisations for clues to terrorist plots.

The changes were announced by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller.

Ashcroft, claiming FBI agents in the field have been hampered by bureaucratic restrictions, said the new guidelines would help them to do their jobs.

He said existing rules gave a competitive advantage to terrorists.

The new guidelines give FBI agents more freedom to investigate terrorism even when they are not pursuing a particular case.

FBI Director Mueller said the changes will be exceptionally helpful to the agency.

On Wednesday, Mueller suggested for the first time that investigators might have detected the terrorist plot if they had pursued leads more diligently.

Under existing rules, FBI agents are not allowed to do general research on the Internet or at public libraries unless the information sought directly relates to a current investigation or to leads being checked out.

The new policy, which does not require congressional approval, removes these obstacles.

The FBI announced on Monday the arrest of a Chinese national in the investigation of a fire set intentionally at the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco.

FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Johnson said Yan Feng, 39, was arrested on Friday after he called police in the San Francisco suburb.

The FBI arranged for his surrender.

The suspect, who has permanent resident status, made his first court appearance on Monday and was held on charges of causing damage to property of a foreign government and arson, Johnson said.

The FBI did not announce an alleged motive, saying the investigation is ongoing.

But Johnson said the FBI does not believe terrorism, politics or civil rights were involved.

"Right now, we're looking at this as purely a criminal matter," he said.

No one was hurt in the New Year's Day blaze that charred a doorway and damaged the lobby of the building.

Consulate workers said surveillance cameras showed a person exit a van with two buckets of gasoline, pour the fuel on the building and ignite the blaze.

The FBI said on Monday they recovered a white mini-van believed to be the one seen in the video.

The FBI said earlier that no bomb-making materials were found.

"It was so important to close this matter quickly so that anybody couldn't make of it more than it was," said Greg Suhr, the San Francisco Police Chief.

"We cherish our relationships with all our consulates here in San Francisco, and want them to know that they are safe."

Consulate spokesman Wang Chuan has condemned the attack and would not speculate on a motive.

In March 2008, a group of people poured flammable liquid on a security gate at the rear of the building and set it on fire. No injuries were reported.

That fire came on the day San Francisco supervisors heard public comment on China's human rights record months prior to the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

The issue arose because of the scheduled Olympic torch run through San Francisco.

The FBI said the latest fire was not related to the 2008 blaze.

Was Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh honest when providing testimony last week to the Senate to defend himself against allegations of sexual misconduct?

If the FBI finds any evidence to refute Kavanaugh's testimony, provided under oath, experts say that could change the minds of Republican Senators, even though many of them have already made up their minds on whether they want to confirm him to the Supreme Court.

"The real issue with Judge Kavanaugh's for his confirmation is going to be: is anything he said under oath so contravened by what the FBI finds so as to persuade Republican members of the Senate to change their view?," said National Security attorney Mark Zaid.

"So it's going to be the introduction of new evidence that would directly contradict Judge Kavanaugh to be able to modify or change someone's opinion as to his credibility, temperament or character," said Zaid.

FBI agents have interviewed at least one of the three women who have accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct as Republicans and Democrats quarreled over whether the bureau would have enough time and freedom to conduct a thorough investigation before a high-stakes vote on his nomination to the nation's highest court.

One area Democrats are planning to focus on as they question whether the nominee was fully truthful in his testimony before the Senate, including his statements about his drinking habits during college and high school.

The FBI renewed its call for the public's help in finding an animal rights activist wanted in the 2003 bombings at two corporate offices in Northern California. Daniel San Diego was the first suspected domestic terrorist added to the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List in April 2009.

He is charged with planting two bombs that exploded about an hour apart in the wee hours of Aug. 28, 2003, on the campus of a biotechnology company in Emeryville, Calif., and another bomb that went off at a nutritional products company in Pleasanton, Calif., a month later.

Four and a half months after a bomb exploded during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, American investigators have decided to ask the public for help.

At a press conference in Atlanta on Monday, FBI officials played a tape with the voice of a man warning of the impending attack.

They also showed a knapsack similar to the one that contained the bomb, hoping that photographs taken that night might help identify the bomber.

July 27 was a black day for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

While a huge crowd gathered to enjoy a concert in Centennial Park, a pipe bomb exploded in the early morning hours.

A woman was killed and more than one hundred people were injured in the blast.

And a cameraman rushing to the scene died of a heart attack.

Shortly after the bombing, the FBI arrested Richard Jewell, a security guard at the games who had first pointed out the knapsack to officers.

Jewell had been put under suspicion on the possibility that he fit a known psychological type - someone thirsty for recognition, often by law enforcement, who creates a crisis so he can defuse it and become a hero.

But after nearly three months as the only named suspect, Jewell was cleared by the government on 26 October.

Stumped in its investigation, the FBI on Monday asked the public for help.

Deputy Director Weldon Kennedy announced there would be a reward of up to 500- thousand US dollars for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the bomber or bombers.

And he defended the lack of progress in the investigation.

"Keep in mind there have been other bombing cases that took 17 years to solve. There are other bombing cases that were never solved. We have been five months, we've done a lot of work with the task force of a hundred individuals, not only the FBI but the ATF and other law enforcement agencies that have been working diligently on this case.

According to FBI officials, the bomb was carried in a green, army-style knapsack, which was left beneath a bench next to a sound tower in the park.

At the news conference, investigators displayed a replica of the knapsack and asked for witnesses or photographs taken in the park shortly before the attack that might help identify the person who carried it.

Hours later, police say, Archer confessed and told investigators he was following Allah, and had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State group. Archer said he believed the police department defends laws that are contrary to Islam, police said.

Local and federal authorities spent much of earlier Friday trying to verify the motive and executing search warrants at two Philadelphia area properties associated with Archer, hoping for more insight into how and why the shooting happened.

Archer's mother told The Philadelphia Inquirer her 30-year-old son had been hearing voices recently and had felt targeted by police. She said the family had asked him to get help and described him as a devout Muslim.

Investigators believe Archer traveled to Saudi Arabia in 2011 and to Egypt in 2012, FBI special agent Eric Ruona said, and the purpose of that travel was being investigated by the FBI.

Police said there was no indication anyone else was involved, and it is unclear if and where Archer practiced his faith locally.

Comey said the FBI has flooded the area, and called for witnesses to speak to federal investigators about the shooting that has sparked massive protests and a national conversation about civil rights and police militarization.
