At a hearing Tuesday, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin asked Wray if there was any evidence the attack was organized by “fake Trump protesters.”

Wray replied the FBI has “not seen evidence of that."

Some Republican members of Congress have suggested that left-wing protesters dressed up as Trump supporters to attack the Capitol, despite no evidence of that.

The group laid siege on the building and interrupted the count of presidential electoral votes after then-President Donald Trump told them in a speech to “fight like hell” to overturn his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden.

Wray testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday for the first time in almost two years. Wray is defending the bureau’s handing of intelligence indicating that there might be violence January 6.

He says the bureau immediately shared with other agencies a report that included “raw and unverified” intelligence predicting the attack.

A Jan. 5 report from the FBI’s Norfolk, Virginia, field office warned of online posts foreshadowing a “war” in Washington the following day. The former chief of the Capitol Police and others have said the information wasn’t flagged for them and was only sent in an email.

Wray says he did not see the report until after the insurrection but it was shared properly.

Five people died as result of the violence.

That fire came on the day San Francisco supervisors heard public comment on China's human rights record months prior to the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

The issue arose because of the scheduled Olympic torch run through San Francisco.

The FBI said the latest fire was not related to the 2008 blaze.

Faced with a highly critical report, Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller on Friday promised changes in the handling of illegal immigrants suspected of having links to terrorism.

In a speech to an American Civil Liberties Union conference in Washington DC, Mueller said the report last week from the Justice Department's inspector general "did a very good job of pointing out areas where we can do better".

The inspector general, Glenn A. Fine, criticised the lengthy detentions, some up to eight months, of many of the 762 foreigners held in the aftermath of the September 11 terror attacks.

He also questioned the FBI's assumption of sole authority to decide whether individuals remained a threat.

Conditions of custody were often unduly harsh and none of the detainees were convicted of terrorism-related offences, with such charges brought only against one, Zacarias Moussaoui.

Mueller said the changes included better criteria for deciding when an illegal immigrant was a suspect of special concern, improved communication between agencies to accelerate the disposition of the cases and more personnel devoted to the investigations.

In addition, federal immigration officials are to have greater authority over custody of these illegal aliens, with the FBI taking over only if the case is made in writing that the release of an individual poses a threat or would disrupt an investigation.

The fate of September 11 detainees was only one of the issues that drew criticism from the civil liberties union in the war against terrorism.

The ACLU has repeatedly fought against government secrecy, questioned the increased surveillance powers under the USA Patriot Act and raised concern that the FBI singles out Muslims for investigation.

Yesterday, Apple formally challenged a court order that it help the FBI unlock the encrypted iPhone.

Federal officials have said they're only asking for narrow assistance to bypass some of the security features of the phone.

But Apple says the order would force it to write a software program that would make other iPhones vulnerable to hacking by authorities or criminals in the future.

Major tech companies are also rallying to Apple's cause, and now plan a joint "friend of the court" brief on its behalf.

The Rev. Al Sharpton says a report that he spied on New York Mafia figures for the FBI in the 1980s is old news.

Sharpton spoke Tuesday about the story posted Monday on the website The Smoking Gun that said he had recorded conversations with mobsters.

"Nothing new about this story," said Sharpton. "Joe Banner was the one who set up the meeting with this guy Sal. So I've done a lot of things in life some that if I could do again I'd do differently but in this situation I did what was right. I did what I was always raised in the values of a praying mother to do and I did what I tell kids every day all over the country that they should do and that is deal with getting guns and crime out of their community and cooperate with the law."

The website said Sharpton worked with a police-FBI task force. The site posted dozens of pages of documents that it said showed Sharpton's dealings with mob figures.

Sharpton said he went to the FBI when he was threatened by mobsters in the music business.

Said Sharpton: "If I was doing business with James Brown I had no choice but to meet with guys, who would later be alleged, or earlier be alleged, to be mobsters. It wasn't like I was saying 'hey I heard you was with the so-and-so family let's chill together.' It wasn't like that."

He says he cooperated with the FBI but didn't consider himself an informant. He says his lawyers are looking at the documents posted on The Smoking Gun.

"Rats are usually people that were with other rats," said Sharpton. "I was not and am not a rat. Cause I wasn't with the rats. I'm a cat. I chase rats and whether it's a rat in racial profiling or police brutality, or mobsters exploiting black artists, don't get me confused."

The website said Sharpton was known as Confidential Informant No. 7.
