Students of a Florida high school which was the scene of a shooting spoke of their horror after Wednesday's attack, while they were being reunited with their parents at a South Florida hotel.

Officers transported the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland to a Marriott Hotel in Coral Springs.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the attack began outside the school Wednesday afternoon.

He told reporters that authorities subsequently found 12 people dead in the building and two more dead just outside the school and one more in a nearby street.

Two other people died later under medical treatment.

"I heard gunshots. I thought it was firecrackers. But after I heard the last shot I was like oh, no," said student Manuel Barraza.

The suspect, a 19-year-old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was in custody.

The gunman was identified as Nikolas Cruz by a US official briefed on the investigation.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to discuss the information publicly.

Hundreds of people turned out at an anti-gun rally in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.

Survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School spoke at the rally to condemn gun laws and rail against the National Rifle Association.

Delaney Tarr, who said she lost four of her close friends, expressed anger at how existing gun laws allowed for suspect Nikolas Cruz to legally buy the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle authorities say he fired Wednesday inside the school, killing 17 people.

Florida's child welfare agency investigated Cruz after he cut himself in an online video but found him stable, according to state records.

Cruz had been diagnosed with autism, a neurological disorder that often leads to social awkwardness and isolation, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

Cameron Kasky and David Hogg, who also survived the shooting, said thoughts and prayers are not enough anymore and urged people to get out and vote to help change existing gun laws.

The 19-year old accused of shooting and killing 17 in a Parkland Florida high school last week was back in court Monday.

Nikolas Cruz is being held without bond facing 17 counts of murder in the Wednesday afternoon shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Cruz kept his head down for the majority of the status hearing only nodding a few times when one of his attorneys spoke to him.

Cruz defense attorneys sought to keep a document sealed but what that document is wasn't specified. The judge granted their request.

The troubled teen authorities say killed 17 people at a Florida high school excelled in an air-rifle marksmanship programme supported by a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation, part of a multimillion-dollar effort by the gun group to support youth shooting clubs and other programmes.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, was wearing a maroon shirt with the logo from the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programme at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when he was arrested Wednesday shortly after the shooting.

Former JROTC cadets told The Associated Press that Cruz was a member of the small varsity marksmanship team that trained together after class and traveled to other area schools to compete.

Brothers James,14, and John Ciaramello, 18, had both stood alongside Cruz as JROTC students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school.

John, at one point, was a ranking officer above Cruz, and recalls him being a bit awkward and quiet but generally good natured.

The brothers spoke on Saturday while visiting an impromptu memorial at a park near the high school.

John said Cruz had trouble following programme orders including wearing his required uniform on assigned days.

He added that on the day of the shooting, the police asked him about Cruz and he told officers all he knew about the cadet in his JROTC company.

John and younger brother James also described Wednesday's shooting at the school.

Along with schools, the NRA Foundation also gives millions of dollars a year to local gun clubs, Boy Scout chapters, churches and agriculture programs.

The NRA Foundation has provided more than 335 million US dollars in grants since 1990.

Broward County Public Schools, which includes Stoneman Douglas High, has received NRA donations to at least four other high schools, records, show.

District officials did not respond to requests for comment Friday.

A total of 18 schools in Florida received NRA donations in 2016, more than any other state.

At least 1,000 people attended a candlelit vigil on Thursday night near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida where more than 17 people were killed in a shooting.  

Mourners held candles and openly sobbed as the victims' names were read aloud.

19-year-old Nikolas Cruz has been accused of carrying out the shootings on Wednesday, he had been kicked out of the school although police have not disclosed any specific motive for the murders.

Wednesday's shooting was the 17th incident of gunfire at a US school this year.  

Of the 17 incidents, one involved a suicide, two involved active shooters who killed students, two involved people killed in arguments and three involved people who were shot but survived.

Nine involved no injuries at all.

The brother of the suspected Florida high school gunman pleaded no contest Thursday to trespassing on the campus where the deadly rampage occurred and was sentenced to time served and six months of probation.

Circuit Judge Melinda Kirsch Brown also ordered Zachary Cruz, 18, to enroll in therapy, wear an ankle bracelet and said he cannot possess firearms or ammunition.

The judge also said Zachary Cruz must be tested to make sure he isn't consuming drugs or alcohol and must stay at least 1 mile from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during probation.

He can never visit the school again and must not contact any victims or their families.

He was arrested March 19 after police found him skateboarding at Stoneman Douglas after school, 33 days after his 19-year-old brother, Nikolas Cruz, killed 17 students and staff members and wounded 17 others during a Valentine's Day shooting. Broward sheriff's deputies say Zachary Cruz had told him not to come on campus, but his attorney, Joseph Kimok, denied that.

Michael Nembhard was sitting in his garage watching live coverage of the school shooting that happened at a Florida high school Wednesday when he heard a police officer yell "Get on the ground!"

He looked up and about 150 yards away he saw a teenage boy on the ground with an officer pointing a gun at him.

The officer stood over the boy until other officers arrived, and the boy was handcuffed around his back and carried away, Nembhard said.

A Florida sheriff said that there were 17 confirmed deaths from the attack.

Motivated by one of the deadliest school shootings since Sandy Hook, dozens of students and parents from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida convened at a park near the school.

The crowd held signs calling for stricter gun control laws and called out politicians for accepting money from the NRA (National Rifle Association.)

"My daughter here is traumatised," said Trexia Bonilla who's daughter survived the shooting at Douglas High school.

"She witnessed things that no kid should have ever witnessed."

Students and others from the Parkland community have planned several demonstrations for this weekend and the upcoming week.

Groups with experience from previous school shootings are helping a Florida community cope with the aftermath the latest devastating attack that left 17 dead.

Groups Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense America held a session in Coral Springs Monday for community members.

Diana Heneski, the librarian at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, said her long-time friend, and Sandy Hook shooting survivor, helped her live through the deadly Florida school shooting.

Heneski told the crowd in Coral Springs how stories from her friend Yvonne Cech, who was the media specialist at Sandy Hook Elementary during the 2012 shooting, helped her prepare for when tragedy struck her school.

"If Yvonne did not tell me all the time. You need your keys, you need your radio," Heneski said, "who knew that I would actually need it. It's too weird."

Heneski and Cech as well as some students spoke at the event.

The families of the 17 Florida high school massacre victims called on the state legislature to pass a bill they believe would improve security at the state's schools.

Reading a statement outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Monday, father Ryan Petty implored the legislature to pass Gov. Rick Scott's proposal that seeks adding armed security guards, keeping guns away from the mentally ill and improving mental health programs for at risk teens.

Petty's 14-year old-daughter Alaina was killed in the Feb 14 shooting, along with 13 schoolmates and three staff members.

Monday, the Florida Senate named a program that will allow some teachers to carry guns in schools after an assistant high school football coach who was killed in a school shooting on Feb. 14 in Broward County.

On Monday, the senate amended its school safety bill to limit which teachers could volunteer to go through law enforcement training and carry guns in schools. Any teacher who does nothing but work in a classroom would be exempt from the program, but teachers who perform other duties, such as serving as a coach, and other school employees could still participate. Others exceptions would be made for teachers who are current or former law enforcement officers, members of the military or who teach in a Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps program.

The amendment also names the program for Aaron Feis, an assistant football coach killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High  School during the Feb. 14 shootings.. He has been hailed as a hero for shielding students during the attack. The Senate also voted to name the program after Aaron Feis, a 37-year-old assistant coach and security specialist who graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in 1999 and worked mainly with the junior varsity, living in nearby Coral Springs with his wife and daughter.

Casey Sherman is trying to keep her emotions in check as she gets ready to head back to school two weeks after 17 students and teachers were killed in a Valentine's Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"The important thing to take out of all this is it's not how you go down, it's how you get back up and that's what we're making the biggest point of.  Because, we're not going to go down and stay down, we're going to come back up and get back up because we are Douglas strong. That's just who we are," Sherman said.

About 50 uniformed officers marched into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School early Wednesday, just one aspect of the heavy security as classes resumed for the first time since the massacre by a troubled teenager with an AR-15, thrusting them into the center of the nation's gun debate.

The heavily armed police presence, designed to make the community feel secure, is also disturbing in itself, some students said.

Grief counselors are on campus as well "to provide a lot of love, a lot of understanding" and help students "ease back" into their school routines, Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said. Officers with therapy dogs also stood outside.

Volunteers passed out cookies and brownies to students. The students were also greeted by therapy animals including a donkey and two horses. One of the horses had "eagle pride" written on it.

Backpacks were not allowed.

Wednesday's class schedule started with 4th period, so that students and teachers could return to the people they were with during the shooting. The freshman building where the massacre took place remains cordoned off.

Sherman, a 17-year-old junior, thinks the schedule was a good idea so kids can "get it over with," and not worry about it all day. Up until 11:30 p.m. working on preparations for the March 14 national school walkout against gun violence, she said she's not afraid to be returning, "just nervous."

Hundreds of people are attending a vigil for the 17 victims of a school shooting in Florida.

The vigil began with a moment of silence for those slain at the school in Parkland.

Seventeen-year-old Sidney Fischer says his Holocaust History class were just wrapping up a lesson on the Nazi regime's 1936 Berlin Olympics when the window on the class door exploded.

Teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had been told just weeks ago to start locking their doors. Fischer says that may have saved his life Wednesday.

The junior, his teacher and about a dozen other students took cover along the wall, behind the teacher's metal desk. The rest of the class rushed to the opposite corner and tried to hide themselves behind a 6-foot-tall metal cabinet.

The killer had a clear shot at them.

Fischer says the shooting lasted just a few seconds. But it would be 20 minutes before police came to the room and told them they were safe.

When he exited the room, Fisher says he had to step over the body of a boy. He thought it was a freshman he'd seen around school.

Later, he learned that senior Nicholas Dworet was one of the two people who died in his classroom. Dworet was going to Indiana on a swimming scholarship, and Fischer said he was always positive.

"And just knowing that his seat, it won't be filled the next time I enter that class is just, it's heart-wrenching," he said, choking back tears.

In the wake of the high school shooting that killed 17 people, Parkland, Florida community members took part in a anti-white supremacy demonstration Sunday.

"We have a problem with toxic masculinity. We have a problem with white supremacy," said Angelica Grindle, a member of ACLU's (American Civil Liberties Union) Broward county chapter. "If we had mass shooters that were black we would be saying it's black identity extremism. If they were Muslim we'd be calling it Islamic terrorism. If they were brown we'd be talking about immigration and building a damn wall. But when they're white, we say it's a lone gunman," she said speaking to a group outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Right across from the rally, community members placed flowers and candles to memorialize the victims of the shooting.

"It's not really fair," said 9-year-old Camilla Valladares after placing a candle at the memorial, "there's not really supposed to be like bad people here shooting and killing people because it's a school for teenagers."

Students gathered outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., some carrying white balloons, to mourn the lives lost in Wednesday’s deadly school shooting that claimed 17 lives.

Friends said senior Joaquin Oliver was among the students killed at the Florida high school.

Nineteen-year-old Tyra Hemans, a senior, said they had been friends since they were freshmen.

She was outside the school Thursday holding up two signs, one about gun control and the other about coach Aaron Feis and Joaquin, widely known by his nickname, "Guac," short for "guacamole."

Hemans said she last saw her friend at school the day of the shooting.

Freshman Isaac Briones carried white balloons as he recalled the events of the day of the shooting.

“It all happened so fast,” he said.

On February 14th 2018 seventeen people died in the shooting attack on a South Florida high school, a sheriff said.

Sheriff Scott Israel of Broward County says the 19-year-old suspect is in custody and that investigators are beginning to "dissect" what happened in the attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

He said the suspect, a former student, was previously expelled for disciplinary reasons.

Israel said the man had at least one AR-15 rifle as well as multiple magazines.

He said most of the fatalities were inside the building though some were found fatally shot outside.

Students of a Florida high school spoke of their horror after the attack, while they were being reunited with their parents at a South Florida hotel.

Officers transported the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland to a Marriott Hotel in Coral Springs.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the attack began outside the school Wednesday afternoon.

He told reporters that authorities subsequently found 12 people dead in the building and two more dead just outside the school and one more in a nearby street.

Two other people died later under medical treatment.

"I heard gunshots. I thought it was firecrackers. But after I heard the last shot I was like oh, no," said student Manuel Barraza.

The suspect, a 19-year-old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was in custody.

The gunman was identified as Nikolas Cruz by a US official briefed on the investigation.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to discuss the information publicly.

A vigil was held on February 15th for 17 victims of the shooting.

President Donald Trump says he doesn't want all teachers to carry guns - just those who are "gun-adept."

Speaking to the nation's governors in the White House, the president responded on February 26th to news coverage of his calls to arm teachers to prevent school shootings after the mass school shooting that killed 17 people.

Trump says he wants "highly-trained people that have a natural talent, like hitting a baseball or hitting a golf ball or putting" to be armed in schools.

Trump says the only way to stop school shootings is "retribution." He says "the bad guy has to understand that there's a big price to pay if your mess around with our students."

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, one of two Democrats to address Trump publicly, spoke up and condemned Trump's calls to arm teachers to respond to school shootings.

Inslee told the president, "We need a little less tweeting, a little more listening." Trump defended the proposal, saying he believes "retribution" is the only way to prevent more school shootings.

Eleven-year-old Naomi Wadler was a stand out from March 24th's 'March for Our Lives' in Washington, DC.

Wadler spoke eloquently and with force.

Wadler, who led a walk out at her elementary school to protest gun violence, attended the march to speak on behalf of African American girls "whose stories don't make the front page of every national newspaper."

"I represent the African-American women who are victims of gun violence who are simply statistics instead of vibrant, beautiful girls full of potential," said Wadler.

Another young girl made an impact at the march. Nine-year-old Yolanda Renee King, the granddaughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., told tens of thousands of "March for Our Lives" demonstrators gathered in Washington, D.C. that she too has a dream - for a gun-free world.

"I have a dream that enough is enough," Yolanda Renee King said, referencing her grandfather's famous speech. "That this should be a gun-free world. Period."

The crowd roared in response.

The Washington, D.C. event has thousands thronging Pennsylvania Avenue to hear speakers including survivors of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and singers like Miley Cyrus.

Hundreds of thousands of people attended youth-led, anti-gun rallies across the United States and the world on March 24th, calling on lawmakers to tighten gun control in order to stop mass shootings and gun violence.

Just before the shooting broke out, some students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School thought they were having another fire drill.

Such an exercise had forced them to leave their classrooms hours earlier. So when the alarm went off on Wednesday afternoon shortly before they were to be dismissed, they once again filed out into the hallways.

That's when police say 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, equipped with a gas mask, smoke grenades and multiple magazines of ammunition, opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon, killing 17 people and sending hundreds of students fleeing into the streets. It was the nation's deadliest school shooting since a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, more than five years ago.

Frantic parents rushed to the school to find SWAT team members and ambulances surrounding the huge campus and emergency workers who appeared to be treating the wounded on sidewalks. Students who hadn't run began leaving in a single-file line with their hands over their heads as officers urged them to evacuate quickly.

Authorities offered no immediate details about Cruz or his possible motive, except to say that he had been kicked out of the high school, which has about 3,000 students. Students who knew him described a volatile teenager whose strange behavior had caused others to end friendships with him.

Cruz was taken into custody without a fight about an hour after the shooting in a residential neighborhood about a mile away. He had multiple magazines of ammunition, authorities said.
