STORYLINE:

A fierce gunbattle in Lebanon fought on the streets of the predominantly Sunni city of Tripoli and in a Palestinian refugee camp close by left at least 22 soldiers and 17 Islamic militants dead on Sunday.

Dozens more were wounded.

It was the worst violence Lebanon's second largest city had witnessed in two decades.

The clashes between troops surrounding the Nahr el-Bared camp and fighters from the militant Fatah Islam began early in the morning shortly after police raided a militant-occupied apartment and a gunbattle erupted, witnesses said.

Ten militants were killed in the building in Tripoli and seven in the refugee camp, security officials said.

Abu Salim, a spokesman for Fatah Islam, only confirmed two militants died and five were wounded inside the camp as a result of the shelling.

Several bodies could be seen lying among the debris of rubble, broken glass and burned out cars as Lebanese forces overpowered the occupants.

A senior security official later said a high-ranking member of Fatah Islam, known as Abu Yazan, was among those killed.

The group is considered by some Lebanese officials to be a radical Sunni Muslim group with ties to al-Qaida, or at least al-Qaida style militancy and doctrine.

Some anti-Syrian government officials claim the group is a front for Syrian military intelligence aimed at destabilising Lebanon although both Syria and the group deny any links to each other.

Several observers on Sunday were openly hostile, with many heard to applaud as the army began pounding shells at the Nahr el-Bared Palestinian refugee camp where the militant group has headquarters.

The camp is also home to tens of thousands of Palestinians who took refuge there to escape the fighting in Israel.

Residents in the camp reported at least 12 civilians killed or wounded.

The figure could not be confirmed: Lebanese authorities have no presence there.

The fighting threatens to further destabilise a conflict-ridden Lebanon that is facing its worst political fall out between the Western-backed government and pro-Syrian opposition since the end of the 1975-90 civil war.

Tripoli has not seen violence on this scale since 1986, when Syrian troops, who were then in control, fought a rebellion in the city.

Prime Minister Fuad Saniora said the fighting was a dangerous attempt at hitting Lebanese security and called on the Lebanese to rally behind the government.

Saad Hariri, head of Lebanon's largest Sunni political faction and leader of the country's parliamentary majority, urged supporters to cooperate with authorities.

Hariri, who met for talks with Prime Minister Fouad Saniora in Beirut, told reporters afterwards that the violence may have been linked to efforts to set up an international tribunal that would try the killers of his father, former Premier Rafik Hariri.

Hariri was assassinated in February 2005.

"This is a blow to Lebanese security. The International Tribunal is coming. Nobody will stop it," Hariri said.

Military presence remained strong in and around Tripoli after nightfall on Sunday.

Pierre Gemayel, an anti-Syrian politician and scion of Lebanon's most prominent Christian family, was gunned down Tuesday in an assassination that heightened tensions amid a showdown between opponents and allies of Syria that threatens to topple the US-backed government.

Gemayel, the industry minister, was the fifth anti-Syrian figure to be killed in the past two years and the first member of the government of Prime Minister Fuad Saniora to be slain.

Saniora went on national television to call for unity and warned of "sedition" against Lebanon.

"I pledge to you that your blood will not go in vain," Saniora said, eulogising Gemayel.

Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud called for citizens to be united in this tragic time, a sentiment that was echoed by Walid Jumblatt, a prominent Druse politician in the anti-Syrian coalition.

"We won't let them divide us in Lebanon and the international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for political assassinations in Lebanon will come soon," Jumblatt said as he offered condolences to Amin Gemayel, father of the slain minister.

Amin Gemayel, a former Lebanese president, told reporters that his son had "died as a martyr".

"All I ask from the people who loved Pierre is to protect the cause, Pierre killed for the cause of Lebanon, for the cause of freedom,'' he told reporters.

The killing has sparked condemnation across the world and from crowds of supporters in Beirut.

Emotional crowds gathered in the streets, with some angry protesters scuffling with security personnel.

There were fires in the streets as many supporters pledged to keep Gemayel's memory alive.

"We will not forget him after some months. We must work together in a very progressive way and in a peaceful way also," said one supporter.

Gemayel's fatal shooting will certainly heighten the political tension in Lebanon, where the leading Muslim Shiite party Hezbollah has threatened to topple the government if it does not get a bigger say in Cabinet decision making.

Witnesses said Gemayel was shot in his car in Jdeideh, a Christian neighbourhood, his constituency on the northern edge of Beirut.

They said a car rammed Gemayel's car from behind and then an assailant stepped out and shot him at point blank range.

Gemayel was rushed to a nearby hospital seriously wounded, the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) and Voice of Lebanon, the Phalange Party's radio station, reported.

The party radio later said he was dead, as did the National News Agency.

Gemayel was a member of the Phalange party and supporter of the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority, which is locked in a power struggle with pro-Syrian factions led by Hezbollah.

He was first elected to parliament in 2005 and was believed to be the youngest legislator in the legislature, where anti-Syrian groups dominate.

The Gemayels have been a political dynasty in Lebanon. The name is famous, and also infamous in some quarters for being a driving force behind the right wing Phalange Party - that fielded the largest Christian militia during the 1975-90 civil war between Christians and Muslims.

The slain minister of industry was the son of former President Amin Gemayel and nephew of Bashir Gemayel, a former president assassinated after the Israeli invasion in 1982 for his tacit collaboration with the Jewish state.

That assassination led to the Christian militia massacre of Palestinians in Sabra and Chatila in September 1982.

Pierre Gemayel's grandfather and namesake founded the Phalange Party in 1936 after a visit to Nazi Germany.

Gemayel is the fifth anti-Syrian figure to be assassinated in the past two years in Lebanon.

Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was killed in a massive car bombing in February 2005.

The journalist and activist Samir Kassir and former Communist Party leader George Hawi were killed in separate car bombings in June last year.

And lawmaker and newspaper manager Gibran Tueni was killed in a car bombing in December.

LEADIN:

2014 has been a tumultuous year for Lebanon, as Syria's civil war continued to spill over into the country.

From managing one million refugees, to suicide bombings and clashes between government forces and Islamic militants, the past year has been a challenging one.

STORYLINE:

January 2nd, just two days into the new year and a deadly car bomb shakes the Beirut suburb Haret Hreik - known for being a Hezbollah stronghold.

The attack kills five people, wounds dozens more and raises fears that the country is being pulled in opposite directions by sectarian tension.

January also signals the start of the long-awaited trial over the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri - nine years after his death.

From The Hague, in the Netherlands, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) will try five suspects, all tied to Hezbollah, for Hariri's death.

There are still many questions to answer, not least the whereabouts of the five suspects - they've not been caught and are being tried in absentia.

In February, ten months after becoming prime minister, Tammam Salam finally forms a government.

Salam's 24-member national unity Cabinet includes members of the Western-backed coalition as well as those of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group and its allies.

"I am sure we will be able to put matters in the right perspective taking into consideration what our people, what the Lebanese, are looking forward to," he says at the time.

Many hundreds of women and activists march to Lebanon's parliament to show their support for victims of domestic violence to mark International Women's Day on 8 March.

Several high profile cases of domestic murders hit the headlines in 2014.

This year, the first Lebanese law against domestic violence was passed, offering Lebanese women some protection from abuse.

April 3rd is something of a milestone in the country.

Three years after the beginning of the Syrian conflict, Lebanon saw the one millionth Syrian to be registered as a refugee.

Almost one in four people in Lebanon are now refugees from neighbouring Syria.

"The challenge today is waking up to the realisation that this is a very protracted conflict. It's not going to end tomorrow. It's going to take some time. We don't know how long but there is a large number of people who are not going home soon. So their needs need to be addressed very quickly before it explodes in all of our faces," says Maha Yahya, from the Carnegie Centre for Middle Eastern Studies.

The country's infrastructure - from schools and hospitals to rubbish collection - remains over burdened, with some communities now imposing restrictions on refugee numbers.

In May, President Michel Suleiman left office, leaving behind an empty seat after parliament failed to elect his successor. The 25 May deadline passes, but no replacement is found.

"The Lebanese missed the opportunity to elect a president 'Made In Lebanon' by May 25," explains political analyst Sami Nader.

"After this, the problem now to get a solution you need kind of a regional consensus. You need a deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia, mainly. And this deal doesn't seem on the horizon yet."

A candidate must secure at least a two thirds majority in the 128-member parliament to become president.

Despite holding parliamentary meetings throughout the year to try and solve the issue - to this day the position remains unfilled.

In June and July the country is once again on high alert after a series of suicide bombings.

Suspects arrested in Hamra in June are believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State group and are said to have been planning an attack against the Speaker of Parliament, Nabi Berri.

Days later, flames engulf part of the four-star Duroy Hotel by Beirut's corniche after a suicide bomber blows himself up during a police raid on his room.

The suicide bomber was a Saudi national. His collaborator, also Saudi. This adds to the strain between Lebanon and the Gulf states.

The boldest incursion of jihadi fighters into Lebanese territory comes in August, when militants launch an offensive on the Syrian-Lebanese border town of Arsal.

The army regains control of the area, but locals and Syrian refugees, who have already fled the neighbouring civil war, are displaced once again.

In early August it's reported that 20 soldiers and policemen have been taken hostage by the militants.

"This Arsal war showed how fragile is the situation in Lebanon. How the borders are not really controlled. And how much capabilities and support the Lebanese army need," says Nader.

On 28 August, social media starts to report that one of the captives, soldier Ali Sayid, has been beheaded.

A few days later the group says it has beheaded a second soldier, 20-year-old Abbas Medlej - sparking fears for the other hostages held by the group.

The country's sectarian crisis comes to a head in October when fighting between government forces and gunmen erupts in Tripoli.

The city has become a hot bed for Islamic militants with firebrand clerics like Sheikh Khaled Hoblos openly preaching in the streets.

Nadim Houry of Human Rights Watch, appeals for calm.

"There is a lot of speculation today about ISIS' strength in Lebanon. But at this stage there is no indication that ISIS is going to seep through Tripoli tomorrow and control the city. Quite the contrary."

"I mean we saw that the army was actually able to beat back many of these groups and that actually many of these groups, and that although many of these groups while they may be Islamist, are not necessarily affiliated with ISIS. But almost, that sort of the issue here is, I think the main challenge is ISIS is able to frame the terms of the debate in many countries.

"And what is needed in Lebanon are pre-emptive strategies to undercut the potential implementation, or growth of ISIS movements."

The four day gun battle claims 20 lives as the army slowly regains control of Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh neighbourhood - though the gang leaders they're hunting escape.

After three years of accepting Syrian refugees into the country, Lebanon has had enough.

On 18 October, it's reported that officials have closed the border between the two countries, despite pressure from the UN to keep it open.

According to official numbers, more than 1.2 million Syrian refugees now live in Lebanon - representing more than 20 percent of the population.

Refugees also appear to be targeted by disgruntled Lebanese citizens.

Eleven-year-old Khaled Darwish came back to his tent to find it burned to the ground.

"When we returned, we found that the tents were all burnt and black and I found all my toys burnt. Everything was burnt. Even my bicycle was burnt. All my toys and my ball," he says.

As the year draws to a close, the soldiers and police officers held hostage by Islamic militants, are no closer to being released.

The families of the hostages continue to protest, their anger now aimed at the government who they say haven't done enough.

Four soldiers have so far been executed by their captors.

The 26 November, saw the passing of one of the country's legendary singers.

Lebanese diva Sabah, died aged 87.

Mourners pay tribute to her incredible musical talent, provocative charm and huge heart.

STORYLINE:

Fatah Islam militants continued to fight and Lebanese troops pounded their hideouts in the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon on the fifth day of an assault aimed at crushing them.

Clouds of smoke rose from the camp as artillery struck militant positions.

Amid a sustained army offensive on Tuesday, seven Islamic militants surrendered to a major Palestinian faction in a besieged refugee camp in northern Lebanon - marking the first tangible move by Palestinian factions against the militants.

The seven militants' surrender was the first sign that a major faction - in this case the Fatah group of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas - responded to calls by Lebanese authorities to actively campaign against the al-Qaida inspired Fatah Islam since fighting broke out May 20.

It coincided with by Abbas' renewed denunciation of the group and tacit backing of the Lebanese crackdown on militants in Nahr el-Bared.

The seven Fatah Islam members came over to Fatah positions in the southern parts of Nahr el-Bared, handed over their weapons and pledged to stay out of the fighting, said Fatah commander Major General Khaled Aref.

Major Palestinian factions have been trying to mediate an end to the confrontation.

The government wants the militants, estimated at several hundred, to surrender, but Fatah Islam has vowed to fight to death.

More than 100 people have been reported killed in the fighting, the worst internal violence since the end of Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war.

Of those were 45 soldiers, including 10 who were killed since the military launched its offensive on Friday on Nahr el-Bared.

Two other soldiers were killed in Ein el-Hilweh, another refugee camp in southern Lebanon, in separate clashes with militants there.

About 60 Fatah Islam militants were also reported killed.

At least 20 civilians have been reported dead at Nahr el-Bared, but recent civilian casualties were unknown.

The international Red Cross said Tuesday it managed to send in some medical supplies to the southern part of Nahr el-Bared - the first time since the offensive began.

The Red Cross evacuated 12 people, including one who was wounded and a pregnant woman, said spokeswoman Virginia de la Guardia, bringing the total number of evacuated people to 45 in the last two days.

Most of the camp's 31,000 residents have fled to a nearby camp, but about 5,000 civilians remained behind.

The bombardment of Nahr el-Bared has angered Palestinians in some of Lebanon's 11 other refugee camps and there were fears that fighting could spread.

Calm returned on Tuesday to Ein el-Hilweh, Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp where Islamic militants sympathising with Fatah Islam clashed with troops on Sunday and Monday.

On Tuesday, the Italian minister of Foreign Affairs Massimo D'Alema met in the Lebanese capital Beirut with the Lebanese Speaker of the House Nabih Berri and the Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora.

During his talks in Beirut, Massimo D'Alema discussed the recent UN Security Council resolution 1757 to establish an international tribunal to prosecute suspects in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the latest development in the Palestinian camps, as well as other regional and international developments.

In a joint press conference at the Grand Serail (Prime ministers office building) D'Alema expressed his support to the Lebanese government, and security forces in the ongoing battle in North Lebanon

The Lebanese Prime minister Fouad Saniora said in the press conference that there is no solution in Lebanon without the cooperation between the Lebanese

It was a strong public show of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Syria, which for years vied for influence over Lebanon.

Many fear that new clashes between Lebanon's Shiite and Sunni communities could break out if the international tribunal investigating Hariri's death implicates Lebanon's Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is Syria's main ally in Lebanon.

Hezbollah militants swept through Sunni neighbourhoods of Beirut in 2008, after the government moved to curb the group's military communications network.

Hariri was a Sunni leader with strong links to Saudi Arabia.

The international tribunal investigating Hariri's death has not announced who will be charged, but the leader of Hezbollah said last week members of his group will be among those indicted.

No details were released about Friday's one-day summit, which marks the first time Syrian President Bashar Assad has visited Lebanon since Hariri's killing in a truck bombing on Valentine's Day 2005. Many in Lebanon blame Syria for the killing, charges that Damascus denies.

The Lebanese government on Sunday condemned the gunbattles at the Nahr el-Bared Palestinian refugee camp and Tripoli in North Lebanon, which erupted earlier on Sunday, killing at least 22 people.

Lebanon's Minister of State stressed that the army would continue its mission to put an end to violence by militants of the Fatah Islam group, which he claimed was also linked to the bus explosions on February 13 in Ain Alak and Bekfayya, east of Beirut.

Michael Faraoun said Fatah Islam did not have links to the traditional security organisations inside Palestinian refugee camps, but was instead "known to be linked to foreign, or outside Lebanon, intelligence units."

The sudden explosion of violence was linked by Faraoun, and by the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority, to efforts to create an international tribunal to try the killers of former Premier Rafik Hariri, which Syria opposes.

Faraoun said the violence was an attempt "to destabilise security and challenge the central government and international community."

He said it came "at a time when justice is getting closer in many files - assassination files - that have been taking place in Lebanon the last two years since the assassination of President (Prime Minister) Hariri and also at a time when the Security Council is about to adopt the international tribunal."

The U.N. Security Council is considering a draft resolution to impose the court after Lebanon's government and the pro-Syrian opposition failed to agree on approving it in Beirut.

The anti-Syrian majority coalition says Syria was using its allies in Lebanon to undermine approval of the court.

A U.N. investigation has linked senior Syrian security officials and allies in the Lebanese security services to the murder while Syria controlled Lebanon.

Damascus, which was forced to withdraw its army two months after Hariri's February 2005 assassination in a suicide truck bombing in Beirut, has denied the accusations.

Residents in the Nahr el-Bared Palestinian camp said at least 12 civilians were killed or wounded, but that figure could not be confirmed by Lebanese authorities, who have no presence there.

At least seven Lebanese soldiers were killed outside the refugee camp, the military said, and TV reports indicated at least three militants died in the fighting, which involved tank and grenade fire.

The violence adds one more destabilising factor to conflict-ridden Lebanon, which is in the midst of its worst political crisis between the Western-backed government and pro-Syrian opposition since the end of the 1975-90 Lebanese civil war.

The clash between army troops surrounding the Palestinian refugee camp and fighters from the Fatah Islam militant group began after a gunbattle raged in a neighbourhood of close by Tripoli, witnesses said.

The militant group is an offshoot of the pro-Syrian Fatah Uprising, which broke from the mainstream Palestinian Fatah movement in the early 1980s and has headquarters in Syria.

As with many other small factions in Lebanon, Fatah Islam's allegiance is sometimes unclear in this deeply polarised country.

Some Lebanese security officials consider that Fatah Islam is now a radical Sunni Muslim group with ties to al-Qaida, or at least al-Qaida style militancy and doctrine.

But some anti-Syrian government officials say they are a front for Syrian military intelligence aimed at destabilising Lebanon.
