Hundreds of Palestinians marched through Gaza city on Monday

(13/2), protesting against the continued closure of the Gaza Strip

and West Bank. Israel has repeatedly refused to lift the ban,

which keeps about 60,000 Palestinians from their jobs in Israel.

It was imposed after Islamic militants killed 21 Israelis in a

suicide bombing last month. For Israel, it's a matter of security

and foreign minister Simon Peres says PLO leader Yasser Arafat

must do more to fight the militants. But there was another violent

death on Monday. An Israeli taxi driver was fatally stabbed in the

occupied West Bank just outside Jerusalem in what police believe

was an attack by Palestinian extremists. Meantime, Palestinian

human rights activist Jonathan Kuttab was fending off allegations

by an American human rights group that Palestinian police in Gaza

were not behaving according to the rule of law. He conceded that

some police officers do treat Palestinian detainees roughly, but

said the police were under pressure from Israel to be very firm.

Perhaps the only positive Mideast news on Monday came when Israel

and the Palestinian Authority agreed to resume delivery of petrol

to the Gaza Strip, which was halted after guerrillas killed an

Israeli guarding a petrol tanker convoy last week.

STORYLINE :

Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, known as a voice for moderation and peace, said Monday that Israel was willing to use all possible means to reach to a ceasefire but, that if the Palestinians were shooting, Israel will shoot back.

Peres spoke after meeting his Dutch counterpart Jozias van Aartsen,

who arrived in Israel to learn first-hand about the Palestinian-Israeli

conflict and the breakdown of talks between the two sides.

Later, Van Artsen headed to Jerusalem and a meeting with U.N.

envoy to the Middle East, Terje Roed Larsen.

Larsen condemned Israel's entry into the West Bank village of Beit Jalla, in Palestinian controlled "Area A".

Damage appeared extensive in Beit Jalla, near Bethlehem, a day after

Israeli's tanks pounded houses with artillery as they pursued gunmen who had opened fire on Israeli forces.

Meanwhile, Israel demolished another Palestinian house Monday in Jerusalem's neighbourhood of Beit Hanina.

STORYLINE :

Violence in the Middle East continued on Sunday despite efforts by Jordan and Egypt to secure a cease fire in the region.

Shimon Peres visited Cairo and was due to travel to Jordan to discuss the proposals

An Israeli man has been killed and an Israeli woman injured after being shot at in Northern Israel.

Israeli police say they suspect the shooting was the work of Palestinian terrorists.

According to newspaper reports in Israel, the car occupants were a family of five travelling back from a trip in northern Israel.

They were shot at near the town of Umm al-Fahm after a car carrying three Arabs stopped them to ask directions, apparently opening fire when the people in the car spoke Hebrew.

The man killed was the driver.

One woman passenger escaped with light injuries and three other passengers were unhurt.

Umm al-Fahm is in southern Galilee, a few minutes drive from the West Bank.

In the Gaza Strip on Sunday Israeli forces Sunday targeted a Palestinian command post in Die El Balah apparently in retaliation for mortar attacks on Jewish settlers in the West Bank.

Earlier on Sunday, two bombs targeting Jewish settlers exploded in the West Bank, but the only fatality was a Palestinian man suspected of setting one of the explosives, officials in Israel said.

Meantime, in Bethlehem, Palestinians buried 34-year-old Imad Karka, killed Saturday near Rachel's tomb.

Karka was shot by accident as Palestinians and Israelis exchanged gunfire. His son was wounded in the eye.

Outside the Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem on Sunday a group of young settlers held a demonstration against Palestinian attacks on Jewish settlments.

Also on Sunday what appeared to be a car bomb exploded near a school bus transporting Jewish students on a road in the northern West Bank, near Nablus, the army said.

According to Israeli security sources, the body of a Palestinian man was found in the badly damaged car, and he was suspected of being the perpetrator.

Thousands of Israelis prayed at Jerusalem's Western Wall on Thursday to protest against US Secretary of State John Kerry's efforts to broker a Middle East peace deal.

Police said more than two-thousand men and women participated in the demonstration.

Prayers were said aloud facing the wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray.

Israel is currently facing an increasingly heated domestic debate over whether it should accept Kerry's anticipated framework for the terms of a Palestinian state in most of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.

The protesters say they do not want to hand over land to the Palestinians, as would be expected in any peace deal.

Kerry has not revealed his ideas, but is expected to propose an Israeli withdrawal from most of the West Bank and parts of east Jerusalem, coupled with stringent security arrangements to shield Israel against attack.

"We don't want to give our land to other nations," said Yaakov Sternberg, a protester.

"It's going to bring a lot of terror to the region as it happened in the last 20 years, so he is making a big mistake," Sternberg added.

Kerry is expected to return to the region in the coming weeks with a proposed "framework" for a final peace deal.

Also on Thursday, the special envoy for the International Diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East, Tony Blair met Israel's President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem to discuss developments.

Peres said he believed it would be possible to "make peace" with the Palestinians, adding: "I believe that Abu Mazen Abbas (Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas) is serious in his will to do so. The fact there are differences is normal."

Abbas said on Tuesday that he would accept a limited Israeli presence in the West Bank for up to three years after a peace deal, but rejected demands for a transition period of more than 10 years.

Abbas said a third party like NATO could take over security arrangements during the withdrawal time.

STORYLINE:

Police in southeast Indonesia have arrested 111 illegal immigrants from the Middle East who were suspected of being bound for Australia, officers said on Thursday.

The suspects, from Iraq, Iran, Algeria and Afghanistan, were detained last week on three islands in East Nusa Tenggara province, said police Lt. Col. Wiliardi Wizard in the provincial capital, Kupang.

Wizard said the group included four women, five children and one baby.

He said the group would be deported.

Wizard said authorities this year have arrested 408 illegal immigrants from the Middle East in the region, some 1,800 kilometres (1,125 miles) southeast of Jakarta.

Indonesia has become a point of entry for many immigrants hoping to reach neighboring Australia.

Many travel by boat from remote Indonesian islands to northern Australia, which has thousands of kilometres of uninhabited coastline.

Pope Francis met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Monday, the last stop of his three-day trip to the Middle East.

Netanyahu took advantage of his meeting with Pope Francis to defend Israel's West Bank separation barrier, which Francis visited on Sunday.

"When incitement and terror against Israel stops, there won't be a need for things like the security fence (the West Bank barrier), which has saved thousands of lives," Netanyahu said, referring to the barrier that envelopes Bethlehem.

Netanyahu also stressed that Israel does protect the right of Christians, unlike other countries in the region.

"We protect the rights of Christians in Israel. That unfortunately does not exist in many places in the Middle East," he said.

"Even in Bethlehem, where your holiness visited, Jesus' birthplace, has become a Muslim city," Netanyahu added.

Meanwhile Peres in his speech thanked Francis for paving the way for peace.

He said he believed Francis' visit would contribute to revitalising the peace process with the Palestinians.

Earlier Francis invited the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to come to the Vatican next month to pray for peace.

Pope Francis and the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, Bartholomew I, embraced and shook hands on Sunday outside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, marking 50 years since hostilities between the two churches were put to rest.

Centuries of antagonism, excommunication and rivalries between the Catholic and Orthodox churches ended at a Jerusalem residence on the Mount of Olives when Pope Paul VI and the then Orthodox spiritual leader, Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, met on 5 January 1964.

For both denominations, separated since the 11th century, the event was revolutionary, so much so that the 50th anniversary is the main reason for Pope Francis' trip to the Holy Land.

In the church built atop the site where tradition holds Jesus was crucified, buried and then resurrected, Francis chose to use the occasion to highlight the ongoing divisions in the Middle East as well as other global issues.

"Standing as pilgrims in these holy places, we also remember in our prayers the entire Middle East, so frequently and lamentably marked by acts of violence and conflict," said Francis.

Bartholomew addressed the issue of religious fanaticism and called for understanding among people of different religions.

"Religious fanaticism already threatens peace in many regions of the globe, where they very gift of life is sacrificed on the alter of religious hatred. In the face of such conditions, the message of the life-giving tomb is urgent and clear: love the other, the different other, the followers of other faiths and other confessions," said Bartholomew.

After a day spent in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, where he held a mass, Pope Francis is set to meet Israeli officials on Monday.

A discussion between Pope Francis and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on what language Jesus spoke was captured on camera on Monday as the two met in Jerusalem on the final day of the pontiff's Middle East tour.

Netanyahu said Jesus spoke Hebrew, to which the Pope responded that Christ spoke Aramaic, an ancient Semitic language.

"He spoke Aramaic and he also knew Hebrew and the holy books," Netanyahu countered.

The pope capped his three-day Middle East trip with poignant stops on Monday at some of the holiest and most haunting sites for Jews.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reiterated his government's commitment to aggressively pursue peace in the south of the country.

Netanyahu warned Hamas, the group ruling Gaza, that Israel will not hesitate to use force against "those who wish to harm us and those who do so".

"We are determined to maintain the calm in the south, we will achieve this by pre-emptive action and targeted killings," Netanyahu said, speaking during the weekly cabinet meeting at his office in Jerusalem.

Earlier on Sunday, Israel struck Gaza after militants fired a rocket into Israel late the night before.

The military said it carried out an airstrike targeting a Palestinian militant who launched five rockets towards Israel late last week.

An Israeli anti-missile battery system intercepted the rockets.

Netanyahu also referred to the international community's "one-sided approach" towards Israel in its talks with the Palestinians, saying it was "unfair".

"The one-sided approach towards Israel does not promote peace, it delays it and strengthens the Palestinian Authority's reluctance to move forward practically with the negotiations," he said.

On Friday, Israel's Foreign Minister summoned a group of European ambassadors to protest against what he described as their countries' one-sided approach to the Middle East conflict.

Avigdor Lieberman called in the ambassadors of Britain, France, Italy and Spain a day after these same countries summoned the Israeli ambassadors in their countries to protest against a recent Israeli announcement of new settlement tenders in east Jerusalem and the West Bank - territories Palestinians want for their future state.

Israelis and Palestinians resumed peace talks in July after years of stalemate and the Israeli government has come under heavy criticism for continuing its construction plans throughout the talks.

More than 500-thousand Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

While the Palestinians dropped a longstanding demand that Israel halt all settlement construction when peace talks resumed, they say they received assurances that Israel would show restraint.

Since then, Israel has approved plans, most recently last week, to build thousands of new settler homes.

The Palestinians, and the international community, view the settlements as illegal or illegitimate.

STORYLINE:

U.S. envoy General Anthony Zinni on Saturday continued his mission to calm tensions in the Middle East, meeting top Palestinian negotiator and Parliament Speaker Ahmed Qureia, also known as Abu Alla.

The meeting took place despite new Israeli accusations that the Palestinian Authority is engaged in terrorism, and tried to smuggle by sea 50 tons of missiles and other weapons into the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Later in the day, Zinni will hold meetings with Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and with Palestinian security officials.

Qureia has also held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres about the framework of a peace agreement.

Under the plan, Israel would recognize a Palestinian state before the two sides negotiate the two sticking points that led to the collapse of negotiations last year: the status of Jerusalem and the fate of four million Palestinian refugees and their descendants.

However, the Peres-Qureia talks were given little chance of success.

The two remain far apart on the dimensions of the Palestinian state to be recognized by Israel, and Peres does not have the full backing of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Zinni returned to the region on Thursday, for a four-day trip, after his

previous mission was aborted in December amid a surge of factional violence.

The envoy said he was more upbeat this time.

Zinni is trying to nudge both sides toward a formal truce, outlined last year by CIA chief George Tenet.

Under the plan, Israel would withdraw troops to positions they held before the outbreak of fighting in September 2000, and the Palestinian security forces would make an all-out effort to prevent attacks on Israelis by Palestinian militants.

With a truce in place, the two sides would then follow a plan for peaceful co-existence proposed last year by an international commission headed by former US Senator George Mitchell.

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Jerusalem on Thursday to try to advance peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

During a joint news conference, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that despite the "shifting sands" in the Middle East, he hoped that a lasting peace could be achieved.

Kerry responded by warning that both sides would soon have to make "difficult decisions" in order to reach a two-state solution.

"I come here with no illusions, I know that there are many that are sceptical about whether or not the two parties can achieve peace. But I will tell you that I have personally learnt something about the power of reconciliation," he said.

This is Kerry's tenth trip to the region for talks aimed at bringing the Palestinians and Israelis together.

On Friday, he is due to travel to the West Bank for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Underlying the ongoing impasse is the lack of agreement on ground rules.

Kerry also offered his thoughts and prayers to former Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon.

Doctors on Thursday said the 85-year-old, who's been in a coma since 2006, was in a critical condition and his life was in danger.

Israeli President Shimon Peres on Tuesday warned Hamas it will be blamed for more suffering of their own people if it will not accept the cease-fire proposed earlier by Egypt.

Peres re-confirmed that Israel has accepted the Egyptian cease-fire proposal.

He also noted that Israelis and Palestinians "share the same aim, which is to end the terror, security and calm of civilians wherever they are."

The Egyptian offer, which was presented late on Monday, called for a halt of hostilities as of Tuesday morning, followed by negotiations on easing the closure of Gaza's borders - a closure that has been enforced by both Israel and Egypt to varying degrees since Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

Peres met the Middle East Envoy Tony Blair to discuss the security situation.

Blair spoke about the importance of a long term solution for the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

"There is a genuine desire to make sure that we put in place a real and lasting solution to these issues, that we don't come back again in a short period of time to more rocket attacks, more death and more destruction," Blair said.

STORYLINE

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised the international community for condemning settlements but not a Palestinian refusal to renew peace talks, nor Hamas calls for Israel's demise.

Israel was widely condemned recently when it announced it would proceed with Jewish housing in a strategic area near Jerusalem after the United Nations accepted Palestine as a non-member observer state recently.

Construction would be years away, but the decision drew wide condemnation and Israeli diplomats were reprimanded.

Palestinians say building there separates Jerusalem from the West Bank which would hinder their statehood plans.

Peace talks between the sides collapsed four years ago.

Israel frequently calls for them to resume.

Palestinians said they would only be renewed if settlement building ends.

Netanyahu said the "silence was deafening" from the UN (United Nations) when Hamas called for Israel's destruction.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers from European Union members were meeting in Brussels on Monday to discuss the "urgent need to restart the peace process" in the Middle East, according to British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

The 27 foreign ministers will consider Israel's plans to build 3,000 new settler homes in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

The country also intends to press ahead with two other projects which would drive a wedge between east Jerusalem, the Palestinians' desired capital, and the West Bank.

Pope Francis on Monday prayed at Jerusalem's Western Wall, the holiest place where Jews can pray, as he continued his visit to the Middle East.

He bowed his head as he touched the wall in the same gesture used a day earlier to pray at the Israeli barrier surrounding the biblical West Bank town of Bethlehem.

Francis spent a few minutes before the only remains of the biblical Second Temple and left a note inside an envelope in one of the cracks between the stones.

When St. John Paul II visited in 2000, he left a note asking forgiveness for the suffering inflicted on Jews by Christians over history.

Pope Benedict XVI's note prayed for peace for Christians, Muslims and Jews alike.

The Vatican hasn't said if the contents of Francis' prayer would be released.

STORYLINE:

US peace envoy General Anthony Zinni pressed ahead with his mission to mend Middle East tensions on Saturday, amid Israeli charges that the Palestinian Authority is engaged in terrorism, and tried to smuggle 50 tons of missiles and other weapons into the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Zinni met Palestinian Parliament Speaker Ahmed Qureia, also known as Abu Alla, and relayed Washington's desire that both sides are to begin carrying out a truce deal in the coming days.

Zinni, a retired US Marine Corps General, promised he would return to the region Jan. 18 to assess progress, according to Qureia.

However, Israel has said it was not ready to observe a formal truce until there have been seven days of complete calm.

Israel announced on Friday that it has intercepted a vessel carrying 50 tons of Iranian-made weapons, including rockets and anti-tank missiles, which it claimed where bound for the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Authority has vehemently denied any knowledge of the arms, which were seized on board the 4000-ton cargo ship "Karine A" in the Red Sea, hundreds of miles from Israel's shores.

Later on Saturday, in the West Bank town of Jericho, Zinni met with Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, telling reporters afterward that he was encouraged that a workable peace deal could still be agreed upon by all sides.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians living in east Jerusalem have been without water for more than a month, victims of a decrepit and overwhelmed infrastructure and caught in a legal no-man's land that has left them with few options for fixing their situation.

The residents of the Shuafat refugee camp are technically part of the Jerusalem municipality.

But they live outside the massive West Bank separation barrier that Israel has built, leaving them in an area where Israeli services are sparse and where Palestinian authorities are banned from operating.

The local Israeli water authority says the existing system of pipes cannot handle the rapid population growth of the area and it is scrambling to solve the problem.

Last week, the Israeli Supreme Court gave officials 60 days to find a solution.

But with the scorching summer season quickly approaching, residents are growing increasingly desperate.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed the area in a move that was never internationally recognised. It considers all of east Jerusalem, including Shuafat, to be part of its capital. Some 200,000 Israeli Jews and 300,000 Palestinians now live in east Jerusalem.

Palestinians have long complained that the city has neglected roads, schools and public services in Arab neighbourhoods of east Jerusalem. The situation has worsened for areas like Shuafat since Israel built its separation barrier in the last decade.

The barrier, which Israel says is needed to keep attackers from entering the city, has literally divided some neighbourhoods in half, leaving thousands of people on the outside. Anyone entering or exiting Shuafat, for instance, must now pass through an Israeli military checkpoint.

Arab residents of east Jerusalem, in contrast to Palestinians in the neighbouring West Bank, have Israeli residency rights, giving them the ability to move freely inside Israel and qualifying them for superior Israeli health care and social benefits.

With residents fearful of losing these rights, neighbourhoods on the Israeli side of the barrier have seen real estate values skyrocket in recent years.

As a result, outlying areas like Shuafat have experienced a wave of unregulated construction as people have searched for cheaper housing that is still within municipal boundaries.

Israeli work crews rarely venture into these areas, fearing confrontations with the local population.

The nearby Jewish area of Pisgat Zeev, just a few hundred metres away, suffers no such problems.

"This is a water crisis that was waiting to happen," says Ronit Sela, a spokeswoman for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, which has led the legal battle on behalf of Shuafat residents.

"We're talking about an area that was cut off from the rest of the city by a wall, where the Israeli authorities don't go in, an area that was neglected even before the wall was set up, no water connection, no infrastructure. And of course the number of people continues to rise," she says.

"Now the whole water system collapses. And when it collapses, no one takes responsibility."

Hagihon, the local water carrier in Jerusalem, says there is little it can do. It says the rapid growth, lack of proper urban planning and rampant use of unauthorised "pirated" pipes has overwhelmed the infrastructure.

Eli Cohen, a deputy director at the company, says the system was built to serve about 15,000 people but believes the population has swelled to between 60,000 and 80,000.

Few homes have water meters, meaning that some 97 percent of the population doesn't pay for its water, he says.

Israel's National Water Authority has denied responsibility and says it is supervising Hagihon in finding a solution.

The Palestinian Authority, the self-rule government in the West Bank, provides water to people in the areas it governs. But it is barred from operating inside Jerusalem's city limits.

Activists say the legal jumble has left them with few options to address the crisis. In the meantime, they are forced to buy expensive water and wait out the drought.

Basic tasks, like brushing one's teeth, have become a challenge. Taking a shower is a rare luxury, and families often send their clothes to relatives elsewhere in the city to wash them.

"When my kids want to go to school, there's no water to wash themselves. My husband goes to work and it's the same thing," says Umm Osama al-Najar, pointing at a pile of dirty dishes in her kitchen sink.

"Sometimes I go into the bathroom and I am disgusted, especially when so many people use the bathroom and there is no water to flush. It's very important that we get the water back here. It's breaking my heart."

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that peace in the Middle East is not "mission impossible".

Speaking during a meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres, Kerry said his earlier conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, had convinced him that both were ready to make "big historic difficult decisions" .

"I'm also convinced that those are decisions that are absolutely totally in the interest of their country Israel and their country-to-be Palestine," Kerry added.

Kerry's comment were echoed by Peres who said that there was "no real alternative" but to try to bring peace.

"The alternative: to renew the conflicts to renew the hate. But there is no alternative to peace but to into a two-state solution," Peres said.

The talks between Israel and the Palestinians are set to end in April and the current deadlock has raised speculation that the US may need to step up its involvement and present its own blueprint for peace early next year, or perhaps lower expectations and pursue a limited, interim agreement.

Kerry and his aides have refused to discuss such an option, insisting instead that the goal of the talks remains a comprehensive peace pact.

At the start of the 20th century, an urgent call went out across the Middle East from Arab leaders in Jerusalem: send us your books so that we may protect them for generations to come.

Now, 90 years later, the al-Aqsa mosque library is fighting to restore many of these centuries-old manuscripts that have fallen into disrepair, and digitise them for the future.

STORYLINE:

The al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem is Islam's third holiest site. Located on a hilltop compound known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, and to Jews as the Temple Mount, it is ground zero in the territorial and religious conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbours.

The library and its 130,000 books is housed in two separate rooms in the compound, where modern steel bookshelves adorn ancient stone walls.

The drive to restore the manuscripts and get them online is part of a greater global trend that has seen an array of historical documents digitised and uploaded to increase access to researchers worldwide.

But the challenge in this collection lies beyond physical distance.

Residents of countries with no diplomatic relations with Israel - that's much of the Arab world - are unable to visit Jerusalem and Palestinians living in the nearby West Bank or the Gaza Strip need to secure a permit from Israel to enter the city.

Manager of Al-Aqsa Library, Sheikh Hamed Abu Teir says:

"We want to prevent past mistakes. We worked on a plan to preserve them and take pictures of them and to put them online. We are interested in putting those manuscripts online, because students in the Arab and Muslim world can't access them, a student in Algeria or Saudi Arabia for example can't reach here and access them. We want to grant him the knowledge in his own house."

This includes reaching scholars that are little more than a 20 minute walk away from the library.

Abu Teir says: "Palestinians from the West Bank can't reach the library for example Al-quds university, one of the largest Islamic universities, is 3-4 kilometres away from this library. Its students can't come here."

The library's manuscripts trace the history of the area. Many were donated following a call in the early 1920s from the Supreme Islamic Council, a religious governing body, which wanted to prevent Arabs from selling old manuscripts to foreign buyers and preserve the Islamic heritage in one of its holiest sites.

The oldest book dates back 900 years, with some of the newer titles from the 19th century. Most of the texts are religious, but other subjects include geography, astronomy and medicine. Some of the pages contain personal letters about travel in the Middle East of the18th century.

The manuscripts were stored in a library for the first few years of the 1920s, but when riots erupted in 1929 over disputes surrounding Jewish and Arab access to the sacred compound, the manuscripts were shoved into bags and arbitrarily filed into closets in a separate building nearby, where they would remain for nearly half a century, when a new space was created for them.

While unpacking the books, officials realised they had been pillaged, with many destroyed. Today's collection numbers 4,000 with about a quarter considered in poor condition.

The restoration and digitisation project is funded by the Waqf, Jordan's Islamic authority which manages the holy site. With assistance from UNESCO it aims to preserve what remains.

Radwan Amro heads up the Manuscripts Restoration Centre. He says: "We have a collection, a lot of this collection is in a bad condition, we're talking about 4000 manuscripts in al-haram. 1000 of this collection is in nearly in a bad case, 100 of these 1000 in a very bad cases. So we establish this centre in 2008 to keep and to preserve and to help our manuscripts to keep it, in this (current) bad situation in Jerusalem, to protect our heritage. We talk about 14 or 15 steps of processing chemical processing and biological processing, mechanical cleaning for every manuscript."

In the six years since the project began, the 10 person team has restored 200 manuscripts as well as old maps, Ottoman population and trade registers and hand-written documents from the Mamluk period of the 13th to 16th centuries.

But the painstakingly slow process of treating every individual page to protect the intricate text and the paper's delicate fibres means restorers have a long road ahead of them.

Amro says he cannot give an estimate as to when the restoration would be complete, joking that it could take "hundreds of years," but he says nearly all of the manuscript pages have been digitised and hopes that by the end of the year they will be put online:

"This mission, preserving of the manuscripts is a generation, international mission, so we must keep our heritage for the next generations to see this science and this knowledge," he says.

"Those manuscripts are the treasure and the trust of the nation," says Hamed Abu Teir. "We should preserve them."

US Vice President Joe Biden has been trying to give a boost to the flagging MidEast peace process, saying he believed Israel and a future Palestine could become an "island of stability" in a turbulent region.

Biden made his comments at a meeting in Jerusalem with Israeli President Shimon Peres.

Biden came for a one-day visit to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

He said that even as unrest shook the wider Middle East, "the one place where there is a possibility for an island of stability ... is between the Palestinian people and the Israeli people in two secure states, respecting one another's sovereignty and security."

Biden added that both sides had "difficult decisions" to make and expressed confidence that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was up to the task.

A proposed framework for a peace deal is due to be presented by US Secretary of State John Kerry in coming weeks.

Kerry returned to Washington last Monday after a mediating mission that included meetings with Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in 1967, but are ready to accept some modifications that would enable Israel to keep some of its settlements.

Netanyahu has so far refused to accept the 1967 frontier as a baseline for negotiations or consider a partition of Jerusalem - at least in public.

But Peres told Biden on Monday that he believed progress was being mad and that neither side should give up on efforts to reach a lasting peace agreement in the region.
