US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says President Donald Trump is trying to be 'as open as possible' about the Russia investigation.

His statement on Thursday came hours after Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted report on Russia investigation was made public.

"It's pretty clear to me he's trying to be as open as possible with the American public. I commend him for that."McConnell said.

The 448-report takes the American public inside the room with Trump as he expressed fear that the Special Counsel would end his presidency and made several attempts to get the people around him to curtail the probe into his campaign and Russia.

McConnell said he hasn't read the 448-Mueller report yet, but supported Attorney General William Barr.

The special prosecutor's findings concluded that he could not find criminal evidence of conspiracy between the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign and Russia's government but could not rule out the possibility that Trump may have obstructed justice after he won the 2016 election.

Within minutes of receiving notification that special counsel Robert Mueller had turned over his report on the Russia investigation, congressional Democrats were calling for the report to be fully released, including the underlying evidence. They have threatened subpoenas if it is not.

The demands are setting up a potential tug of war between congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump's administration that federal judges might eventually have to referee.

Six Democratic committee chairmen wrote in a letter to Attorney General William Barr on Friday that if Mueller has any reason to believe that Trump "has engaged in criminal or other serious misconduct," then the Justice Department should not conceal it.

"The president is not above the law and the need for public faith in our democratic institutions and the rule of law must be the priority," the chairmen wrote.

Reacting to the release, Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu, who serves on the Judiciary Committee, told the Associated Press that "the American people paid for this report," adding "both American people and Congress have a right to see the full report. "

Lieu said although the special counsel report focused on Russia, the findings could also be used in a wide array of Judicary Committee investigations.

It's unclear what Mueller has found related to the president, or if any of it would be damning. In his investigation of whether President Donald Trump's campaign coordinated with Russia to sway the 2016 election, Mueller has already brought charges against 34 people, including six aides and advisers to the president, and three companies.

Lawmakers say they need the underlying evidence - including interviews, documents and material turned over to the grand jury - because the Justice Department has maintained that a president cannot be indicted, and also that derogatory information cannot be released about people who have not been charged. So if the investigation did find evidence incriminating against Trump, they may not be able to release it, under their own guidelines.

The Democrats say that it could be tantamount to a cover-up if the department did not let Congress and the public know what they found.

The incoming chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says Attorney General nominee William Barr has confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur) and will let Mueller finish his Russia investigation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham says Barr has a "very, very high opinion" of Mueller.

The South Carolina Republican was among the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who met with Barr on Wednesday as Barr made the rounds on Capitol Hill before his confirmation hearing next week.

President Donald Trump pushed out Attorney General Jeff Sessions last year and nominated Barr to replace him.

Trump's critics have warned that Barr may try to curtail Mueller's investigation, given that the president has repeatedly called it a "witch hunt."

And Barr wrote an unsolicited memo to the Justice Department last year critiquing Mueller's investigation

Graham also commented on President Trump's speech Tuesday night from the Oval office.

"I thought the president did a good job of explaining the humanitarian problem," said Graham.

"I think the president is open minded to a deal, he's firm on the idea he needs border security money, including money for barriers, but I believe and hope he's open to a deal."

Within minutes of receiving notification that special counsel Robert Mueller had turned over his report on the Russia investigation, US congressional Democrats were calling for the report to be fully released, including the underlying evidence. They have threatened subpoenas if it is not.

The demands are setting up a potential tug of war between congressional Democrats and US President Donald Trump's administration that federal judges might eventually have to referee.

Six Democratic committee chairmen wrote in a letter to Attorney General William Barr on Friday that if Mueller has any reason to believe that Trump "has engaged in criminal or other serious misconduct," then the Justice Department should not conceal it.

"The president is not above the law and the need for public faith in our democratic institutions and the rule of law must be the priority," the chairmen wrote.

Reacting to the release, Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu, who serves on the Judiciary Committee, told the Associated Press that "the American people paid for this report," adding "both American people and Congress have a right to see the full report. "

Lieu said although the special counsel report focused on Russia, the findings could also be used in a wide array of Judicary Committee investigations.

It's unclear what Mueller has found related to the president, or if any of it would be damning. In his investigation of whether President Donald Trump's campaign coordinated with Russia to sway the 2016 election, Mueller has already brought charges against 34 people, including six aides and advisers to the president, and three companies.

Lawmakers say they need the underlying evidence - including interviews, documents and material turned over to the grand jury - because the Justice Department has maintained that a president cannot be indicted, and also that derogatory information cannot be released about people who have not been charged. So if the investigation did find evidence incriminating against Trump, they may not be able to release it, under their own guidelines.

The Democrats say that it could be tantamount to a cover-up if the department did not let Congress and the public know what they found.

The incoming chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says Attorney General nominee William Barr has confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur) and will let Mueller finish his Russia investigation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham says Barr has a "very, very high opinion" of Mueller.

The South Carolina Republican was among the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who met with Barr on Wednesday as Barr made the rounds on Capitol Hill before his confirmation hearing next week.

President Donald Trump pushed out Attorney General Jeff Sessions last year and nominated Barr to replace him.

Trump's critics have warned that Barr may try to curtail Mueller's investigation, given that the president has repeatedly called it a "witch hunt."

And Barr wrote an unsolicited memo to the Justice Department last year critiquing Mueller's investigation

Graham also commented on President Trump's speech Tuesday night from the Oval office.

"I thought the president did a good job of explaining the humanitarian problem," said Graham.

"I think the president is open minded to a deal, he's firm on the idea he needs border security money, including money for barriers, but I believe and hope he's open to a deal."

Public at last, special counsel Robert Mueller's report revealed to a waiting nation on Thursday that US President Donald Trump tried to seize control of the Russia probe and force Mueller's removal to stop him from investigating potential obstruction of justice by the president.

Trump was largely thwarted by those around him.

Mueller laid out multiple episodes in which Trump directed others to influence or curtail the Russia investigation after the special counsel's appointment in May 2017.

Those efforts "were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the President declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests," Mueller wrote.

After nearly two years, the two-volume, 448-page redacted report made for riveting reading.

In one particularly dramatic moment, Mueller reported that Trump was so agitated at the special counsel's appointment on May 17, 2017, that he slumped back in his chair and declared: "Oh my god. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I'm f---ed."

With that, Trump set out to save himself.

In June of that year, Mueller wrote, Trump directed White House Counsel Don McGahn to call Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversaw the probe, and say that Mueller must be ousted because he had conflicts of interest. Public at last, special counsel Robert Mueller's report revealed to a waiting nation Thursday that President Donald Trump tried to seize control of the Russia probe and force Mueller's removal to stop him from investigating potential obstruction of justice by the president.

Trump was largely thwarted by those around him.

Mueller laid out multiple episodes in which Trump directed others to influence or curtail the Russia investigation after the special counsel's appointment in May 2017.

Those efforts "were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the President declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests," Mueller wrote.

After nearly two years, the two-volume, 448-page redacted report made for riveting reading.

In one particularly dramatic moment, Mueller reported that Trump was so agitated at the special counsel's appointment on May 17, 2017, that he slumped back in his chair and declared: "Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I'm f---ed."

With that, Trump set out to save himself.

In June of that year, Mueller wrote, Trump directed White House Counsel Don McGahn to call Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversaw the probe, and say that Mueller must be ousted because he had conflicts of interest. Democrats grappled Monday with special counsel Robert Mueller's findings, holding strategy sessions as Republicans gleefully called for them to "move on."

President Donald Trump accused those responsible for launching Mueller's Russia probe of "treasonous things against our country" and said they "certainly will be looked into."

Trump also said the release of Mueller's full report "wouldn't bother me at all" as the Democrats clamored for the Justice Department to release the entire document and not just Sunday's four-page summary from Attorney General William Barr.

"I've said all along that we would accept whatever conclusions he reaches as a prosecutor, said Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

"I've also said that there is a big difference between whether there is evidence of collusion, and I think that evidence is in plain sight, and whether you can establish a proof beyond reasonable doubt of a criminal conspiracy."

Schiff said his committee's investigation has focused on counterintelligence issues and particularly whether the president or anyone around him is somehow compromised.

"That work has to go on," Schiff said.   

Republicans disagree.

"I don't see the Democrats getting over this right now because they wanted impeachment from the beginning," said Rep. Steve Scalise of Alabama.

"I think the Democrats have way overstepped and overplayed this," he said.

That work has to go on and we're committed to doing our oversight until we get answers."

There are a lot of open questions. Why did the Russians offer dirt on Hillary Clinton? Why did the president's son say that he would love to have that help? Why did they set up a meeting at Trump Tower? Why did they keep it secret? Why did they lie about it? Why did the campaign chairman provide polling data for someone linked to Russian intelligence? Why did Roger Stone reach out to the GRU you through Gusifer 2? Why did the president ever reach out to Roger Stone? Well, these answers--these questions have not been answered by the summary we got from Bill Barr. I would hope that there are answers in the Mueller Report. Now those answers I would imagine don't amount to proof beyond a reasonable doubt of a crime but they are concerning nonetheless particularly as they shed light on whether there is any form of compromise of these individuals. Well, these answers--these questions have not been answered by the summary we got from Bill Barr. I would hope that there are answers in the Mueller Report. Now those answers I would imagine don't amount to proof beyond a reasonable doubt of a crime but they are concerning nonetheless particularly as they shed light on whether there is any form of compromise of these individuals. So we're going to try to figure out answers. (Reporter) Republicans say you should step down. (Schiff) I'm more than used to attacks by my GOP colleagues and I would expect nothing less. "I think the Democrats have way overstepped and overplayed this. They tried to mislead the American people to think the president was somehow going to be removed and was colluding with a foreign country, and it wasn't true. It didn't happen. Now, it's time for them to get over it, but they won't get over it. I don't see the Democrats getting over this right now because they wanted impeachment from the beginning. They wanted to overturn the results of the 2016 election. That was what a lot of this was rooted in. I think that's what angers the American people the most. We've got big problems we need to be focused on. And when Nancy Pelosi and her new majority ran, saying give us these gavels to be chairmen, they didn't do it under the guise of harassing the president and his family everyday. And yet that's all they continue to do, even after it's turned out there was no collusion."

The White House invoked executive privilege Wednesday, claiming the right to block lawmakers from the full report from special counsel Robert Mueller on his Trump-Russia probe and escalating the battle between President Donald Trump and Congress.

The administration's decision was announced just as the House Judiciary Committee was gaveling in to consider holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress over failure to release the full report.

Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler of New York declared the action by Trump's Justice Department was a clear new sign of the president's "blanket defiance" of Congress' constitutional rights.

"Every day we learn of new efforts by this administration to stonewall Congress," Nadler said. "This is unprecedented."

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the action was rather a response to the "blatant abuse of power" by Democratic Rep. Nadler.

"Neither the White House nor Attorney General Barr will comply with Chairman Nadler's unlawful and reckless demands," she said.

"Reporter: What kind of information did the president get on China trade this morning?  He said he got new information that the Chinese were coming here to cut a deal? How does he know that?

Look, we have got indications that they want to make a deal.  Our teams are in continued negotiations.  They are going to sit down tomorrow and we are going to see what happens from there.

Reporter: If the Mueller report fully exonerates the president, as he suggests, why doesn't he want Congress to see the entire thing?

Look, I think it is so absurd, this idea that Congress doesn't get to see the Mueller report. In fact, there is a less redacted version of the Mueller report sitting there waiting on them to come and look at ... not a single Democrat has even taken the time to go look at it.  They are asking for information they know they can't have.  The attorney general is actually upholding the law.  Chairman Nadler, take a minute to let this sink in, Chairman Nadler is asking the attorney general of the United States to break the law and commit a crime by releasing information that he knows he has no legal authority to have.  It is truly outrageous and absurd what the chairman is doing and he should be embarrassed he is behaving this way.

Reporter: Is the United States heading to a war with Iran?

I certainly hope not.  But the president is going to remain firm on our position and I don't think anybody is looking for any type of war with anybody.

Reporter: Chairman Nadler,  says that the White House already waived executive privilege.  He said the moment they revealed documents to Mueller they waived the privilege.  That's black letter law. So how is the White House still claiming that it has privilege?

You would think for an attorney, Chairman Nadler would be a little bit more up on the law. I'm not and I actually feel like I understand it better than he does. The attorney general is protecting information, grand jury information, confidential information, that he cannot release. The fact that the chairman knows that and continues to ignore it is absolutely absurd. Let's not forget this is the same guy who was too afraid to ask the attorney general questions himself. If he can't do his job, and he can't understand the basic rule of law and uphold it, then he shouldn't be in the position he is in.

Reporter: If the president is going to invoke executive privilege over the Mueller report is he still going to declassify the FISA warrants and the 302s, like he has said he is going to do, and if so, when?

It is certainly something that the president is looking into doing and we will keep you posted on the time frame.

Reporter: More on that, just to follow up on that.  Is there any indication that the president would not like to see Mueller testify now that executive privilege has been asserted and is there any indication that Mueller might be asked to stay on and not leave in the next few days because of the assertion of executive privilege?.

I am not aware of any requests like that. The president's made his feeling on that very clear and the way that we see that is that this is over and just because the Democrats didn't like the results, doesn't mean they get to redo this process. We've spent two years, millions of taxpayer dollars, submitted millions of pages in documents, been fully cooperative, hundreds of hours of testimony and Bob Mueller came back and said there was no collusion. If Bob Mueller couldn't find it, I am 100% sure that Jerry Nadler is not going to find anything that Bob Mueller couldn't - he can't even handle asking the attorney general questions. Do we really think he can handle something like this? I think the answer is no.

Reporter:  Is the president OK with South Korea sending food aid to North Korea when there appear to be new provocations from Pyongyang?

Our position in regards to North Korea is going to continue to be the maximum pressure campaign.  Our focus is on the denuclearization.  If South Korea moves forward on that front we are not going to intervene.

Reporter: The president is good at predicting elections, so what is his take on the Indian election? The world's oldest democracy is having its election right now?

I haven't spoken to him about that specific election, but if I get something on it I will certainly let you know.

Reporter: Does the White House still respect Congressional oversight? Chairman Nadler says this is the end of Congressional oversight?

Well, that is because Chairman Nadler is, again, trying to violate the law.  The president and the attorney general are the ones actually upholding it and as long as Congress and this committee continue to ask the attorney general to commit a crime, the president and the attorney general will continue to up hold the law.

Reporter: Is the White House going to let Don McGahn testify?

Reporter: Sarah, what do you make of people who say that by the president invoking executive privilege is now plunging the country into a Constitutional crisis? What do you make of that?

Ah, I make of that that people don't understand the precedent that has been set.  This is fully consistent with that precedent and fully consistent with the president actually upholding the law.  If anybody is overstepping that would be Chairman Nadler and his committee. Thanks guys."
