The ceremony was followed by a flying display by jet aircraft, a "Comet" being one of the highlights. Royal New Zealand Air Force "Vampires" drew patterns of smoke in a thrilling aerobatic performance. An RAF "Vulcan" had an extra, unrehearsed thrill in store for the spectators: coming in to land, one wheel collapsed. But they pilot took the bomber up again, to crash-land safely at a nearby station.

Auckland's annual regatta has been held for over a century, but the Queen's visit to the Tamaki Yacht Club made this year's event the first Royal Regatta ever held there. At Wellington, a stiff Nor'-Wester was gusting up to 50 miles an hour, so the Queen stepped ashore at a more sheltered quay, to begin her tour of New Zealand's capital, a city built on hillsides. Over 10,000 youngsters were gathered in Athletic Park for a display which pointed the New Zealanders' passion for sport. A sheep-shearing contest, followed by a wool fashion parade, was next on the Queen's programme. But the focal point for the next Royal engagement was New Zealand's Parliament Building. Here, Her Majesty opened a special session of Parliament. It was an impressive formal occasion in a tour which has been usually informal and memorable for its colour and variety.

The scene of the worst train disaster in New Zealand history, where the bridge collapsed and the night express from Wellington to Auckland crashed into the river Wangaehu at fifty miles an hour. At Windsor Castle, the pageantry of the Garter Ceremony. Prince Philip was the visitor to a far-away island in mid-Pacific, near the Equator. His Royal Highness was greeted with a war-dance and was presented with a necklace as a peace-offering. Another highlight was the triumphal procession through the village with an escort by ladies of the island, and Prince Philip borne aloft on a Pacific island throne! He then inspected the Guard of Honour formed by men of the Gilbert and Ellice constabulary. Afterwards, he strolled through a village "high street", to see the people live their everyday lives in this distant colony. Then, Prince Philip went sailing in one of the local, out-rigger racing canoes. At one point in the tour, the New Zealand frigate "Rotoiti" acted as escort to "Britannia". The Prince decided to visit her and went across. From the Islands, the route now lay through the tropical seas of the Pacific to the Panama Canal.

"Miss United Kingdom", declared the judges, is the new "Miss World". Bob Hope performed the coronation ritual. Grace Li, from Formosa, came second, and Carmen Cervera, Spain, third.
