HOLLYWOOD GRIPPED BY SPENDING FRENZY FOR OSCARS

The countdown is on and Tinseltown is spending millions of dollars sprucing itself up in every way imaginable.

With a global TV audience of around one billion it pays to dress to impress if you intend to grace the Academy Award's legendary red carpet.

Across town from the Oscars venue, in the shopping nirvana of Beverly Hills, designers of every ilk are renting out suites in the some of the swankiest hotels to hawk their wares.

You won't find the man on the street here, though - as these items are the necklaces, shoes, handbags, dresses and make-up that will be shimmer and shine on the red carpet on Oscar day.

This week is hectic for The Diamond Information Centre. They have been co-ordinating with designers around the world for the creation of a 'Red Carpet Collection.'

Among the designers who are hoping to have their goods seen are H Stern - who have created, necklaces that start at several thousand and quickly zoom into the millions - including one with a 23-carat diamond center piece, valued at 500 thousand dollars.

But it isn't all about glamour. If a celebrity wears it on the big day - H Stern will make a 10-thousand dollar donation to amFAR - the American Foundation for AIDS research.

Down the hall designer Stuart Weitzman is showing off his million dollar shoes. Weitzman dreamt up the idea after last year's Oscar ceremony and has made them a reality this year.

They are made of platinum and diamond - but aren't just for strutting around on the red carpet. The diamond decoration can be taken off and worn as jewellery as well.

Most celebrities borrow the glamorous jewels for the big day. But all the designers agree - if you'd like to buy your favourite piece afterwards, that's no problem.

It is unlikely any star will arrive for the Academy Awards without their most glamorous face on and designer Maria Magdalena is hoping celebs will try out her new line of couture gem cosmetics.

Magdalena, who is based in Holland, was a student of Chinese medicine when she discovered that Chinese Empresses used to crush pearls and diamonds into their make-up.

She went on to develop a full line of cosmetics which she says harmonises the ancient power of the earth with high tech skin care.

Among the gems she uses for her lip, eye and skin lotions and potions are rubies, diamonds, amethyst, jade and aquamarine.

No outfit would be complete without a handbag and designer Timmy Woods is hoping to fill that gap with her wooden and hand-painted hand bags, starting at 200 dollars.

Downstairs Mac make-up artists are busy at work dolling up everyone from reporters to celebrities. They then only need to cross the room to get a new coif from Vidal Sassoon's elite team of hair stylists. The average cost of a Oscar hairdo is a hair-raising 7 thousand dollars.

Once you're all dolled up - it's back upstairs for a cocktail at Bacardi's O room - in case you're wondering - that's O for Orange.

They've had a special cocktail designed for the big week, and hope it will make a big enough splash to tempt punters all year round.

A couple of blocks away The Beverly Hills Four Seasons has their pastry chef Donald Wressell working overtime in order to give each guest an Oscar-themed chocolate treat.

And to top off the whole experience, guests can get an eyeful on Wressell's annual chocolate homage to the five nominees for best picture.

LEAD IN:

It's awards season and everyone in LA is busy glamming themselves up for the Oscars, the biggest red carpet event of all.

Beauticians are offering a variety of anti ageing treatments to plump up, or smooth down every part of the body.

STORYLINE:

It's the Oscars weekend and the latest head-to-toe red-carpet-ready treatments are on standby.

It's the time of year when everyone is looking for as many quick-fix treatments and procedures they can endure in one sitting.

Beauty salons that offer a multitude of non-invasive treatments simultaneously are especially popular.

Luxury cosmetic procedures trending this awards season include a lot of gold and various treatments that claim to help many parts of the body at the same time.

Dr. Ava Shamban MD is  Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UCLA's Geffen School of Medicine and the author of a book called Heal Your Skin.

She says non-invasive treatments are trending again, but now they come in one all in package.

"According to the American society of Aesthetics Physicians in 2018 there were 10 million of these non-invasive producers performed which was an increase of 5 percent  over 2017 and during this period of time when so many people are coming to get ready for this awards season for the Oscars, for all these red carpet events and parties, we see even more right here in Los Angeles," says Shamban.

Shamban believes the treatments are less about wanting to look good for yourself, to make you feel better. Now the digitally alert younger crowd want to look good for facetime and the clients are getting much younger.

"We also have seen that there's an influx of younger people chiming in for these non-invasive treatments. They want to look like some of these people that they're following on social media and so all of these treatments that we are doing, whether it's fillers, whether it's botox, whether it's lasers or whether it's thread lifts, we're seeing that trend move younger and younger" says Shamban.

At Vida Emanuel European Day Spa and Beverly Hills Beauty Lounge business is booming.

The spa is offering its "Oscars Glam Gold Glow" treatment, a $575.00 (USD) combo facial which includes exfoliation, hyaluronic serum hydration and collagen infused gold face mask.

They're aim to help firm the skin and soften and smooth fine lines and according to Emanuel, glow drops serum made of anti-aging compounds and mineral pigments  hydrate and refine pores for a youthful appearance.

The signature part of the treatment is a micro current treatment to the face with the newest ultra portable device called NuFACE FIX.

The company claims the regime helps to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth and forehead - instantly.

At this spa, you get to keep the device when the session is over.

At Cynthia Franco Skin Studio in Beverly Hills, esthetician Cynthia Franco's signature treatment is a nine step, $450.00 (USD) detoxifying and body slimming red carpet treatment called "Head to Toe Glow."

"I basically do a dry brushing all over and a lymphatic massage with special oils that I make, you're wrapped in a infrared blanket where you sweat the detox for 50 minutes and I do a facial in the course of that time, with micro current, 24-carat gold, hyaluronic and alpha lipoic acid, as well as an IPL. You get a seaweed alginate mask and some oxygen at the end" says Franco.

The marathon 2-hour treatment covers the entire body with a variety of non-invasive procedures.

It begins with a full body dry brush scrub over the body, followed by an enzymatic body peel, then a lymphatic massage with a custom blend of oils and natural ingredients.

Finally the body is sealed in a mylar blanket which in turn is wrapped by an infrared blanket to induce intense sweating for 50 minutes.

With the body temporarily taken care of, it's time for a multi-layered facial including a seaweed and algae mask.

Following that micro current is used infusing hyaluronic alpha lipoid acid and a 24-carat gold serum.

This is followed by cupping for the face and just before the finish, the face is given a session with intense LED Pulse Light (IPL).

For the finale the body is buffed to stimulate the lymph nodes and a cellulite treatment is applied to the knees and elbows.

Franco says one of these sessions on the day before an awards show and party will reduce excessive water, detoxify and leave you in a golden glow for your red carpet experience.

If you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars there is an alternative quick fix, it's a dry face mask, called Youth Revealed Restorative Techstile Treatment by Nannette de Gaspe.

It's claimed the completely waterless masks deliver anti-aging and hydrating active components direct to the face.

The company claims the face masks used four days in a row lead to a 39 percent reduction in wrinkles, a 107 percent increase in hydration, and a 23 percent  improvement in pigmentation.

The masks aren't just for the face, there's one for you bottom called TUSH and another called BUST.

The company commissioned tests on its products and claims they showed up to 36 percent increase in breast volume after using the mask six consecutive days.

A two day follow-up for three more weeks, it says will deliver a one centimeter increase.

TUSH and FACE are part of this year's 'Everyone Wins' unofficial gift bag which the marketing company Distinctive Assets, gives annually to Oscar nominees.

The gift bags are not affiliated to or endorsed by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Nannette de Gaspe Beaubien, founder and CEO of the beauty line believes the dry mask concept really works.

"The dry mask consists of billions of biomimetic micro vectors that encapsulate the active ingredient and when they touch the skin it recognizes it and pulls them in as they go into the multiple layers of the epidermis, they melt and deposit active ingredients under the skin and feed and nourish the skin upward for six to eight hours. Compared to regular skin care delivering 87percent  active ingredients and emollients. Regular skincare contains five to seven per cent active ingredients" says De Gaspe.

Everyone here is having a warm up for the real event, getting themselves into the party mood at a restaurant in West Hollywood.

ALL OSCAR NOMINEES ARE WINNERS ON MONDAY

The Academy may no longer give out its official gift baskets - but that doesn't mean this year's Oscar nominees will go home empty handed.

Those who win an Oscar will be deemed to have enough of a prize. But nominees in the major categories who don't win on Sunday night will be sent a string of luxury gifts, from firms hoping to see their product linked with the stars.

Distinctive Assets, the company behind a $40 thousand dollar 'swag bag,' will be sending out loot gathered from like likes of Heineken, Revaleskin and Havaianas, the day after the Oscars ceremony.

The company's founder and president Lash Fary told AP Entertainment what will be up for grabs: "One for sure is from Heineken, it's their beer tender device. It's so cool and so fabulous. We had this in the Grammy awards and we knew we had to bring it back for the Oscars. It creates that draught beer experience right on your own counter top. This skin care expert has been sought out by some of the biggest names of Hollywood including Barbara Streisand, Madonna, Charlize Theron and many more.

Plus he's here to spill the details about how his celebrity clients have such amazing skin.

His name is Ole Henriksen. He is the founder of OLEHENRIKSEN face/body spa and skincare line.

"Well when you are at the Oscars the entire world sees you up close," said Henriksen. "You want luminous skin. You want skin that looks alive. Luminous skin is also about uniform pigment, tiny tight pores, firm skin and celebrities really want to use the least amount of make-up. They want to highlight that skin because healthy skin is synonymous with young looking skin."

Henriksen has been working with celebrities since 1975 and notes that what he admires most is their discipline in taking care of their bodies. For the most part, they exercise daily, eat healthy food and take great care of their skin.

"I must say, we feel so blessed to have so many extraordinary celebrities that come to the spa. Many as long as ten, fifteen years," said Henriksen. "Jessica Chastain, we prepared her last year for her Oscar appearance when she was nominated and I have high hopes this year that she is going to win."

Jessica Chastain is nominated this year as Best Supporting Actress for "Zero Dark Thirty."

Celebrity men are big fans as well including people such as Daniel Craig, Prince, Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Jackman and Mark Wahlberg.

"Mark (Wahlberg) is all about deep cleansing, complexion treatments," said Henriksen. "Truly, the texture of his skin now is so flawless it's truly baby soft."

Another male client is Oscar nominated Hugh Jackman. Jackman is nominated as Best Actor for "Les Miserables."

"Hugh (Jackman) has flawless skin but he is an example of a man who wants to look his best. He takes pride in his appearance. It's very apparent, by the way the man exercises and stays fit," noted Henriksen.

Another current nominee client is Amy Adams. Adams is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "The Master."

"And Amy Adams, beautiful. Speaking of a beautiful woman with red hair, which actually her stylist Christina Ehrlich that brought her to our premises. Christina takes great charge of her as far as dressing her beautifully and obviously leading her to the best places as far as skin care. So she has delicate and refined skin. So for her it's all about a calmative and soothing treatment."

Pop star Katy Perry has also sought out Ole Henriksen for her troubled skin.

"And oh my goodness, Katy Perry. She doesn't quite sing for us in here but I have to tell you. She has personality plus," said Henriksen. "For Katy it's all about clean, healthy and radiant looking skin. When on stage, she wears tons of make-up. It looks absolutely beautiful but obviously in the real world she just wants to show her skin looking healthy and radiant."

For people at home that would like to obtain a healthy celebrity glow but don't have the means or access to a spa, Henriksen has some homemade recipes.

"A recipe made just from the flaxseed meal, loaded with Omega three, six and nine fats but also very gritty," explained Henriksen. "Very much exfoliating in a gentle manner. An ounce of that with an ounce of almond oil. Almond oil is soothing and comforting. It provides a beautiful glide for the scrub and then a table spoon full of honey. Honey is a great humectant, its anti-bacterial. You stir them together. You have a scrub that you can use numerous times and you work it into your skin two or three times a week in upward, outward motions, tiny circular motions, getting into every crevice in the face, spend about two or three minutes doing it. You rinse it off. Your skin will look like it had a professional treatment."

Whether you are using professional skin products or homemade skin care recipes, Henriksen points out that regularity is essential. You have to stick to your scheduled skin care plan and follow through, just as you would do for your teeth or hair.

The Oscars are February 24th, in Hollywood, California.

HOLLYWOOD GRIPPED BY SPENDING FRENZY FOR OSCARS

The countdown is on and Tinseltown is spending millions of dollars sprucing itself up in every way imaginable.

Across town from the Oscars venue, in the shopping nivana of Beverly Hills, designers of every ilk are renting out suites in the some of the swankiest hotels to hawk their wares.

You won't find the man on the street here, though - as these items are the

necklaces, shoes, handbags, dresses and make-up that will be shimmer and shine on the red carpet on Oscar day.

This week is hectic for The Diamond Information Centre. They have been

co-ordinating with designers around the world for a the creation of a 'Red

Carpet Collection.'

Among the designers who are hoping to have their goods seen are H Stern -

who have created, among other things - a necklace for the red carpet

collection.

Necklaces start at several thousand and quickly zoom into the millions - with a 23-carat diamond as its center piece is part of the

Red Carpet collection.

But it isn't all about glamour. If a celebrity wears it on the big day - H

Stern will make a 10-thousand dollar donation to amFAR - the American

Foundation for AIDS research.

Down the hall designer Stuart Weitzman is showing off his million dollar

shoes.

Weitzman dreamt up the idea after last year's Oscar ceremony and has made

them a reality this year.

They are made of platinum and diamond - but aren't just for strutting around

on the red carpet.

If diamond shoes aren't your thing - go next door to local designer

Christian Tse's room. There you will find modern jewelry - heavy on the

platinum, yellow gold and - of course - heavy on the diamonds.

Most celebrities borrow the glamorous jewels for the big day. But all the

designers agree - if you'd like to buy it afterwards - that's not a problem

either.

It is unlikely any star will arrive for the Academy Awards without make-up

on and designer Maria Magdalena is hoping celebs will try out her new line

of couture gem cosmetics.

Magdalena, who is based in Holland, was a student of Chinese medicine when

she discovered that Chinese Empresses used to crush pearls and diamonds in

to their face make-up.

She went on to develop a full line of cosmetics which she says harmonizes

the ancient power of the earth with high tech skin care.

Among the gems she uses for her lip, eye and skin lotions and potions are

rubies, diamonds, amethyst, jade and aquamarine.

No outfit would be complete without a handbag and designer Timmy Woods is

hoping to fill that gap with her wooden and hand-painted hand bags that can

start at $200.

Downstairs Mac make-up artists are busy at work dolling up everyone from

reporters to celebrities who only need to cross the room to get a new coif

from Vidal Sassoon's elite team of hair stylists. The average cost of a Oscar harido is a hair-raising $7000.

Once you're all dolled up - it's back upstairs for a cocktail at Bacardi's O

room - in case you're wondering - that's O for Orange.

They've had a special cocktail designed for the big week - and hope it will

make a big enough splash that punters will buy it year round.

A couple blocks away - The Beverly Hills Four Seasons has their pastry chef

working overtime in order to give each guest an Oscar-themed chocolate

treat.

If that isn't enough dessert though - guests can get an eyeful on chef

Donald Wressell's annual chocolate homage to the five nominees for best

picture.

In celebration of the upcoming Academy Awards, The Silver Spoon Hollywood Buffet caters to the red-carpet celebrities and stylists crave.

If the holiday season celebrations are taking their toll... then its time for some pampering.

STORYLINE :

A relaxing massage is just the way to unwind after a stressful year dominated by worries about the economy.

At 'The Spa' in the Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills - a popular new treatment is the 60 minute 'Cranberry Pomegranate Body Polish and Wrap' ($200 USD).

Clients are cocooned in a pomegranate algae wrap which is said to help firm, tone and moisturise the skin.

At the same time - a warm peppermint scalp treatment aims to help clear and focus the mind.

Daisy Tepper, Director of Spa, explains the treatment.

" This year we chose a white cranberry pomegranate exfoliation which begins the treatment followed by a pomegranate algae wrap. While you're wrapped, we do a peppermint scalp massage. Once the product is rinsed off we do a silk body spray which leaves the skin smooth, bright and glowing."

In these tough financial times even luxury spas are having to change the way they market their products and services.

Erin Mahoney, founder and editor of Chill Out L.A..com, LA's spa and beauty directory, says people are still going to spas but are spending a little less.

When it comes to eco-spas - it's no longer just the building but the treatments that are green conscious.

Tepper says that in 2009 she expects clients to want shorter treatments, which she attributes to people being more time conscious.

At Lea Journo, The Salon, another new beauty treatment big for 2009 is the 24 carat gold nail polish with real gold flakes in the polish.

'Love, Beverly Hills' is a 60 minute manicure ($85 USD) or 80 minute pedicure ($150).

Both include a glass of champagne to help you feel even more special.

Lea Journo, the salon's creative director, says clients always want something new ahead of Oscar season (end of February).

Client Francesca Rizzatti was keen to experience the full Beverly Hills star treatment on a visit to Beverly Hills from Modena, Italy.

It seems that in Beverly Hills economic hardship is no excuse for not looking and feeling like a movie star.

Cate Blanchett is used to costumes bordering on disguise on the big screen - layers of thick white makeup for her star turn in the "Elizabeth" movies, or a wig and leather jacket for her portrayal of a young Bob Dylan in the upcoming "I'm Not There."

But it's still surprising to picture her serving breakfast at home wearing an actual mask. Donning a white cotton, full-face moisturizing cover akin to a soft hockey mask is part of her skin care ritual, says Blanchett, who has been hired as the U.S. face of SK-II, a high-end skin care line from Procter & Gamble Co.

Her two kids aren't always impressed. "They see it and just roll their eyes," said the Oscar-winning actress, speaking from Rome. "They'll wake up in the morning, and I'm making their sandwiches for school and I've got the mask on."

Today the actress joins a long list of celebrities endorsing personal-care products, but she says she's used SK-II for seven years to keep her skin in its famously good shape.

SK-II, whose products retail for between $60 and $300, is available in a dozen countries, mainly in Asia. The products are also available in a few U.S. department stores.

Blanchett previously represented the brand in Australia.

Because her roles have frequently demanded heavy makeup application (two-and-half-hours worth daily for "Elizabeth"), her skin requires extra attention, Blanchett says.

She says she even handed out the white mask to Brad Pitt, her co-star in next year's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," after they both endured prosthetic makeup.

"I'm evangelical about it," Blanchett says.

The actress and her husband will take over the artistic reigns of the Sydney Theatre Company in January:

Actress Carmen Electra says she is doing just fine during her separation/ divorce from rocker Dave Navarro.

Court documents indicate the couple split on 18th July.

Navarro is already rumoured to be dating former porn star Jenna Jamison, while Electra has been linked with Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx.

"There are ups and downs in life," Electra says about her divorce. "Whether it is your personal life or whatever, we all experience that and it's just a matter of how you look at it and handle it. Perhaps to keep her mind occupied, Electra has taken on more work.

Different Oscar nominees have different ways of spending their Sunday leading up to the time the limo comes to pick them up and drop them off at the Dolby Theatre.

Daniel Kaluuya, who is nominated for actor in a leading role for his performance in the horror-satire "Get Out" said, "I don't think I'm going to hear the alarm," when asked about his Oscar day will begin.

"I think I'm gonna wake up a bit before it and then I'll see I'll catch a vibe," the actor continued. "I'll see how I feel. I don't know, I've never done this before. I'll put some tunes on, put a bluetooth speaker and run some rhythms and then we'll see what happens."

Daniela Vega, star of the Chilean Oscar nominee for foreign-language film, "A Fantastic Woman," has more specific plans.

"For me, a very busy morning, because I have to prepare my hair and my makeup and my dress and everything," she explained, adding she'll attend the ceremony with her family, the film's director, Sebastian Lelio, and other members of the filmmaking team.

"Mudbound" director Dee Rees, who is nominated for co-writing the film's original screenplay, seemed to be most philosophical of all asked about Oscar day.

"It's just like a centering of the self," she explained. "It's like remaining sober and like the reality that nothing but the art matters, nothing but the work, nothing will put on the screen is a real kind of like, you know, end to all of this. So, for me, we've already created work that lasts. Everything else is extra. So tomorrow is another day."

Italian Luca Guadagnino, who directed the best-picture contender "Call Me by Your Name," and is nominated as one of its producers, expects to wake up early due to being jetlagged.

"I go downstairs in my hotel, the Beverly Wilshire, for breakfast," he said. "I read the newspapers. Tomorrow is a big day in Italy because it's Election Day in Italy. And I think that I make a little bit of care for my face. I'll spend time with my family. My sister is here from Sydney. She's going to be my date to the Oscars. It's going to be nice."

Actor Lil Rel Howery, who provided comic relief to the Oscar-nominated best picture "Get Out," is heading for the barber.

DIRECTOR TELLS ALL ABOUT 'DON'T TELL' NOMINATION

Italian director Cristina Comencini, the consummate mistress of Italian family drama, has had greatest success yet with the psychological thriller, 'Don't Tell'.

Feted last year at the Venice Film Festival, Comencini is now Hollywood bound and set to tread the Oscar red carpet, with the film nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language Film of the Year.

A story of child abuse, repressed memory and mystery, 'Don't Tell' (aka: 'La Bestia nel cuore,' or 'The Beast in the Heart') has already enjoyed great success worldwide, but Comencini said the Oscar is likely to provide a big boost for the film's Stateside release, which has just begun.

She also said the nomination should serve as a beacon of hope for female directors. 'Don't Tell' is the only one of the years major-category features to be directed by a woman.

"It's important that women can see another woman walking on the red carpet," she said.

As for her native Italy? Comencini said she'll do all she can to bring home Oscar gold. "They are all asking me, 'Please, take the Oscar and come back.' And I say, 'No, it's not something very easy. There are five. They are all very, very strong movies.' . . . I think that, for Italy, it's a very good result to be nominated."

The 78th Annual Academy Awards is set for Sunday, 5 March.

Forget last minute beauty treatments, stars start to prepare for their time on the Oscar red carpet three months before the big event.

In order to get a flawless complexion for high def television, major skin prep is done well before any thoughts of hair and make up.

Celebrity skin care expert and make up artist Tracy Davis - who works with names like Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Sandra Bullock - explains how it works.

"Normally clients, what they will do typically is go three months prior to the awards shows (in prepping their skin). What seems to happen is that sometimes they go into invasive products and it''s methods, and what have you Botox, Restylane, and all of that. Nothing wrong with that. However, I think it is more beneficial to have a skin care regiment that they can use throughout their life. So that there is something that they can follow so that they are always red carpet ready."

Best actress Oscar-nominee Sandra Bullock, who is 45 years old and wears minimal make up, is a perfect example of a star who likes to use more natural ranges, says Davis:

"We love Sandra, and Decleor, Sandra loves this product. Demi Moore uses the Carita product. We have Brooke Shields using the Carita product. I think more and more celebrities and women a like are becoming more aware that natural is really the way to go. And their skin looks amazing... And Meryl Streep, she is a doll. She uses also the Carita products. What they found is that by using those products, it really, it is really increasing their skins elasticity. It is giving them that youthful look. When you see them live, they have beautiful skin."

As for make-up - what looks will Hollywood stars sport to grab the Oscar spotlight on Sunday (7 March 2010)?

Too Faced Cosmetics founder, Jerrod Blandino, is a make up artist who has worked with the cream of Hollywood and gave Katy Perry her famous pin up girl look.

Actresses will also be show-casing the latest in hair designs, inspiring global fashion trends and thousands of copy-cat looks for the year to come.

Patrick Melville tends the tresses of stars like Charlize Theron, Blake Lively, Demi Moore, Heidi Klum, Halle Berry, Tom Cruise and Mark Wahlberg.

He agrees that it''s all about feminine beauty this year:

"I think the hair these days is really going in a more natural feeling. I mean it is not forced hair, it is more loose, a little more romantic. Its award season time in Hollywood and for many LA celebrities that also means freebie time.

Gifting suites and gift bags have been a part of awards season for decades, meaning that every nominee is a 'winner'.

STORY-LINE:

Eyeing up a free gift in Hollywood.

A number of gifting suites are busy luring celebrities and their teams in the hope of promoting new products and services.

Here, a range of free goods are handed out, from anti-aging creams and trips around the world, to new technologies, jewellery and more.

The Secret Room Events Red Carpet Style and Luxury Lounge, held on February 21, 2017 was the one of the busiest this year.

Held at the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, 25 vendors set up shop for one day only.

Wall-to-wall invited talent, producers, directors, and stylists were given access to the new products and services.

Secret Room Events spokesperson, Natalie Alvarez says the suites are a chance for invited guests and vendors to be pampered and get media coverage.

"This event is a luxury gifting suite. It's a luxury lounge where celebrities are pampered with products, vacations, jewellery, makeup, everything, so this is their opportunity to just be kind of pampered, be spoiled. It's nominated actors, actresses and all forms of media and press," says Alvarez.

So what's inside some of the goodie bags on offer?

There are anti-aging treatments, including a wrinkle lift serum.

There are also offers of Botox and various other beauty creams as well as makeup, manicures and hair styling.

And while every actor wants to win a gold Oscar statue, for those who miss out there's always gold face cream instead.

California-based European Skin and Massage Studio is pushing its product Celebrity 24-carat Gold Face Mask.

The studio's esthetician Margaret Tomas says she's honoured to be taking part.

"It's fantastic. We had a lot of celebrities coming. Today I've been introducing my new skincare line and new mask with 24-carat gold. The celebrities are going to be wearing the mask to the Oscars, to the event Sunday."

Other gifts include an all-inclusive five-night visit Croatia by the Croatian National Tourist Board, a headset for streaming TV and various other gadgets.

There's even a Vivajennz purse that has a pour spout for your beverages.

And the gift for people who have everything? A personalised piece of "cremation" jewellery that allows a loved ones ashes to be preserved forever in a necklace.

At another gifting suite at a Hollywood restaurant, 25 vendors are taking part in the 9th annual Valentine Romance Oscar Style Lounge & Party (held Thursday Feb 22, 2017)

Clothes, jewellery and wine are among the big draw cards, along with with anti-aging water.

Perricone Hydrogen Water is made by celebrity dermatologist Dr. Nicolas Perricone.

He says his energy water works at the cellular level to improve skin quality while attacking free-radicals.

"This is a true incredible drink because it's an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and works in a matter of minutes in terms of the way you feel but its just water and hydrogen, no caffeine, no sugar and no stimulants, no amino acids, just pure water," says Perricone.

These gifting suites are not affiliated to or endorsed by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

But as awards season hots up it's an opportunity for retailers to get their products seen.

Samiah Hinton Designs was the fashion stop for actress Maria Conchita Alonso, while fashion designer Sue Wong showed off her old Hollywood glamour gowns.

"I'm here because my clothing, which is really utterly glamorous, seductive and magical, really works at old Hollywood glamour magic and that's what I'm all about," says Wong.

On Monday morning following the Oscars, the top 25 acting and directing nominee losers will actually be winners when they receive the "Everyone Wins" Nominee Gift Bag delivered for the 15th year to their door.

Items include food, tech gadgets, jewellery and vacations. But the bag is also not affiliated with the Academy Awards.

Lash Fary, founder of the LA marketing firm Distinctive Assets, curates the bags but won't say the exact value.

He says it's a great way to make everyone a winner.

"They're going to be winners in the gift department so if they happen to loose this it will be a fun consolation prize for them to go through, enjoy and share with their loved ones and the reaction has been so positive over the years we've had so many folks who have been nominated who've gone on the trips that we've given them in their gift bag. Nominees that miss out on the big prize might get some consolation from generous gift bags, containing tens of thousands of dollars' worth of products.  

STORYLINE:

Award nominees are being offered a $100,000 USD gift bag by a marketing firm not affiliated with the Academy Awards.

Gift bags are not sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The goodies include something for everyone, from indulgence and everyday products, to holidays and anti-ageing products.

Distinctive Assets, a Los Angeles-based marketing firm puts together the 'Everyone Wins' bags for nominees in the 'Best Actor,' 'Best Actress,' 'Best Supporting Actor,' 'Best Supporting Actress' and 'Best Directors' categories.

Items include everything from skincare products to jewellery and holidays.

"This is our 16th year putting together the 'Everyone Wins Nominee Gift Bag.'" says Lash Fary, the founder and president of Distinctive Assets.

"This is an independent production and we have no association with the Academy, which means that we choose to only gift the 25 top nominees in the acting and directing categories.

"Over the past 16 years, we've gotten such incredible feedback from the celebrities who get these gift bags.

"We roll this up right to their front door or to their hotel rooms, if they're visiting Los Angeles, and we love seeing them act like children on Christmas morning going through this fabulous gift bag."

In 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sued Distinctive Assets and the case was settled amicably.

The settlement stated that the Academy and the Oscars have no relationship with Distinctive Asset's offerings and the marketing company would not use the Academy's trademarks.  

Just before the 2006 Oscars, the IRS flagged up the bags as taxable income, adding those who accepted them would have to pay up.

A few months later, the Academy and the IRS reached a settlement on undisclosed taxes from bags given out in previous years.

The Academy also announced it would no longer be giving out the giftbags, having already quietly voted to stop the practice. Marketing companies have continued to provide gifts to celebrities.

Janice O'Leary, the Los Angeles editor of the luxury lifestyle magazine 'Robb Report,' says award season is always an exciting time in LA.

"It is a wild weekend in LA," she says.

"The energy here is really high and you see this uptick in luxury, all over LA, over this weekend and even for the past few weeks, you feel that energy.

"People are driving their fancy cars, backing them out of the garage, taking them to the award ceremonies and viewing parties. The Peninsula is unrolling some Rolls Royce's, the Waldorf Astoria has a few Aston Martins on hand for a few VIP guests."

This year, celebrities are also being offered holidays, including a 12-night trip for two to Tanzania by International Expeditions.

Another big trend this year is DNA kits. The 23andMe DNA kit helps people trace their ancestry just by taking a bit of saliva.

PROVEN is a new beauty startup that uses artificial intelligence to create personalised skin care products for consumers.

Each nominee has had face lotion created just for them, with their names on the bottles.

Ming Zhao, the CEO and co-founder of PROVEN, says consumers fill out an online form and receive a skin profile based on findings from PROVEN'S skincare database.

The database is nicknamed "The Beauty Genome Project" and was built using bots to analyse eight million customer reviews.

Peru''s Shining Path rebel group released 36 kidnapped workers last week in a bid to attract military forces to the jungle area where they were being held, according to one member.

The rebel, going by the alias of "Comrade Gabriel," said that the aim was to attack the military personnel and seize arms.

The kidnapped construction workers were freed on Saturday by rebels who had abducted the men five days earlier from a town near the country''s main natural gas fields.

The rebel spoke on Tuesday to Peruvian journalists, who went to Alto Lagunas looking for the remains of a helicopter shot down over the jungle during a search and rescue operation a week ago.

Footage secretly filmed by a journalist captured the Shining Path member saying that the rebels did not receive any ransom for the kidnapped workers even though initially they asked for 10 (m) million US dollars.

"We reached a moment where all of our goals were accomplished and we, willingly, released them," he said.

The Peruvian government deployed 1,500 soldiers and police to the area near Peru''s key Camisea gas field to try to rescue the 36 construction workers who were taken on 9 April.

Two army officers and two police officers were killed during the search and rescue operation, two police officers are missing and 10 soldiers were wounded.

"Comrade Gabriel" said on camera that his rebel group was behind three attacks that pitted the government forces against the Shining Path.

The first one was the shooting down of a helicopter in which a captain was killed.

The second one was also directed against an army helicopter and killed three officers who were jumping out of the aircraft into the jungle.

The army has only retrieved one body and the other two officers are considered as missing.

The last one was an ambush where 10 soldiers were wounded.

Peru''s Prime Minister Oscar Valdes said on Wednesday that there is no official confirmation of the death of the missing police officers and that the army is still searching the area.

"We repudiate the idea that there are still insane Peruvians who are proud of murdering police officers," he added.

The US Ambassador to Peru also made an statement on Wednesday as it was released that the helicopter which was shot down last Thursday belonged to the United States.

"We have been supporting Peru''s effort, it has been a joint effort, we all have to face together this problem," she added,

The cocaine-trade funded rebel band is a small remnant of the Maoist group that terrorised Peru in the 1980s and 1990s.

It is believed to number about 300 to 500 fighters and is centered in the Ene and Apurimac Valley region where more than half of Peru''s coca crop is grown.

"I do.  You know, as someone whose career didn't start until I was 38, that's been, I've been happy and fortunate to get cast in roles and I think now more than ever there are other more and more roles for women and more female producers with people like Reese Witherspoon doing 'Big Little Lies' and all those extraordinary  - extraordinarily talented women who are coming to television to want to - because there is not a better opportunity for more complex and interesting roles. People like Margot (Robbie) I'm so excited about her becoming a really important producer because she, she knew, she's so young and yet she knew that she wasn't getting the kinds of roles she wanted to in film, so she decided to start her own production company and look for female driven content. And what the movie is trying to say is there is not us and them, there is only us. And can we try love instead of just induced fear."

MCDONAGH, ROCKWELL, JANNEY, DEL TORO SPEAK BACKSTAGE AFTER THEIR BAFTA WINS

The ferocious female-led tragi-comedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" was the big winner at the British Academy Film Awards in London, where women demanding an end to harassment, abuse and inequality dominated the ceremony.

The red carpet and the auditorium at London's Royal Albert Hall were a sea of black, as actresses such as Lupita Nyong'o, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence and Margot Robbie eschewed color as a statement against sexual misconduct and gender inequality.

Several actresses brought feminist activists as guests, and men showed solidarity with "Time's Up" lapel pins.

Martin McDonagh's film about a bereaved mother seeking justice won five trophies Sunday including Best Film, Outstanding British Film and Best Actress, for Frances McDormand.

Speaking backstage after winning Outstanding British Film of the Year - the first prize of the night - McDonagh said it was fitting, in the year of the "Time's Up" campaign against sexual harassment, that "Three Billboards" features a strong female lead.

"I'm really happy that a film like this with a performance as strong as Frances's is getting out there this year, you know, it's a great sort of statement for the Time's Up and MeToo movements, I feel, weirdly and we made it a year and a half ago. So we didn't expect any of these discussions to be taking place right now. But we're proud of that aspect and we're happy to do our part for Time's Up too."

McDonagh won the Original Screenplay prize for "Three Billboards," which also netted Sam Rockwell the Supporting Actor trophy.

The star called his role the best of his film career, backstage.
