STORYLINE: Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme spoke on Tuesday (18th June) and tipped Chris Froome to emerge victorious in this years race.

The director of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme, expects that the 2013 event, the 100th edition of the Tour de France, will be a scenario of Team Sky against the rest of the world, with Christopher Froome as the undisputed leader of his team.

He expects Bradley Wiggins to come roaring back in 2014 after not defending his crown in this year's race, which starts in just over a week. "I think he'll have his motivation back and be back," Christian Prudhomme said in an interview on Tuesday in his Paris office.

Elite athletes, he noted, "can fall very low but rebound very quickly."

The first two stages in 2014 run through Yorkshire in northeast England, with the third going from Cambridge to London, so Wiggins will be on home ground. "I think he'll be very strong," Prudhomme said.

About the doping affairs in the Tour, Prudhomme said: "One of the fundamental questions is the capacity of finding the substances. If the medical corps would be capable to find all the substances, there would be no doubt at all. And the last years, the gap has been considerably tightened between those who cheat and those who track down the cheaters."

Prudhomme warned that the first stages on the French island of Corsica could be treacherous.

After a flat opening stage on June 29 that British sprinter Mark Cavendish, among others, will have his eye on, the race ventures over more jagged terrain inland and up the island's west coast.

From Corsica, the Tour crosses to the French mainland.

"Those who haven't scouted the Corsican stages will have made a big mistake. On the evening of the first stage, they'll be telling themselves, "It's all flat!" Prudhomme said. "Two days later they will have understood why the automobile Tour of Corsica is called `The Rally of ten thousand Bends.' Not only does it go up and down, it turns all the time."

Christian Prudhomme, himself a passionate supporter of cycling, remains optimistic for the popularity of the sport: "Cycling is a sport for families, for people who are happy to be there, for people smiling."

STORYLINE:

Chris Froome and other riders reacted after the 2017 Tour de France route was unveiled on Tuesday (18th October).

All five mountain ranges of continental France will feature in next year's Tour de France, setting up a gruelling, three-week racing challenge that seems tailor-made for the climbing strengths of defending champion Chris Froome and his Colombian rival, Nairo Quintana.

In their quest to keep the 113-year-old race young, organisers have again unearthed fresh racing challenges from the geography of France, with new climbs and, on stage 18, an unprecedented mountain-top finish on the punishing Col d'Izoard high in the Alps - a rocky, hostile and lunar terrain that could be the final big battleground for the winner's check of 500,000 euros ($550,000).

Before that, on stage 12 in the Pyrenees, the Tour climbs to the Peyragudes ski station where parts of the James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" were filmed in 1997.

From its July 1 start in Duesseldorf, Germany, to the July 23 finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, the 3,516-kilometre (2,185-mile) route will wind over climbs in the Vosges, Jura, Massif Central, Pyrenees and Alps. STORYLINE

Tour de France riders set off Sunday in Marcoussis toward the finish of the three-week race on the Champs-Elysees, with Alberto Contador all but certain to take home the yellow jersey after a race more likely to be remembered for scandal.

The 24-year-old Spaniard locked up victory by holding off second-placed Cadel Evans of Australia with a 23-second lead in the final time trial on Saturday.

Contador's Discovery Channel team-mates were likely to ensure that he protects the razor-thin margin in the 90.7-mile (146-kilometre) ride from Marcoussis to the famous Paris avenue.

Discovery's Levi Leipheimer is third overall, 31 seconds back.

Contador inherited the leader's yellow jersey when Michael Rasmussen was ousted Wednesday by his Rabobank team for lying about his whereabouts in June, when the Danish rider missed a doping check.

Fans poured out to line barriers the Champs-Elysees and marcoussis hours before the finish, braving intermittent rain.

Some were seen wandering in hats with the Tour's logo or wearing yellow rain capes.

In an unplanned irony, Sunday's route was leading the pack through the town of Chatenay-Malabry, home to the French anti-doping laboratory that has exposed several cheats this year.

Gilbert Covemacker, a French supporter weighed in on the scandal.

"It's bad for sports (referring to drug use). I'm not talking about the Tour de France because there isn't drug use just on the Tour de France. It's a general trend in sports," Covemacker said.

But many believe the Tour de France will survive despite the doping scandal.

"Of course it (the Tour de France) will survive. And we all fight for it. And I think it's heading in a good direction. For the sixth time in the history of Tour de France, the Grand Depart of cycling's showpiece event will be the Netherlands.

After Amsterdam (1954), Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978), 'S-Hertogenbosch (1996) and Rotterdam (2010), now it is the time for the Dutch town of Utrecht. The first stage will be an individual time-trial in whole town, from west to east and back, crossing the historic city.

Two Dutch riders have won the Tour de France, Jan Janssen in 1968 and Joop Zoetemelk in 1980.

With more bicycles than inhabitants and parking near the railway station for 20,000 bicycles, for organisers there is no more need to justify the passion for cycling in Utrecht.

The French government on Tuesday (24th May) announced increased security for this year's Tour de France.

Organisers for the Tour de France announced on Monday (27th June) that they are to use thermal cameras to detect motors on bikes.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) said on Monday it will make between 3,000 and 4,000 bike checks for motorised doping at the Tour de France, which begins on Saturday (2nd July).

The world governing body has increased testing at major competitions, including the Tour, in recent years following rumour and speculation regarding motors hidden in frames.

And the UCI announced it was stepping up testing once more for "technological fraud" in the biggest race of the year, which begins at Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy this weekend and concludes in Paris on July 24.

A statement read: "For the forthcoming Tour de France, the UCI will have resources in place to conduct between 3,000 and 4,000 tests.

"An effective testing protocol is one which is unpredictable so the UCI confirms that it will deploy additional methods of detection at the Tour to both assess their performance and to ensure a varied testing protocol."

UCI president Brian Cookson said: "Since the beginning of the year, we are sending a clear message which is that there is literally nowhere to hide for anyone foolish enough to attempt to cheat in this way.

"A modified bike is extremely easy to detect with our scanners and we will continue to deploy them extensively throughout the Tour and the rest of the season."

Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche was in April, suspended for six years by the UCI in the first case of motorised doping in cycling.

Disciplinary proceedings began in March after the 19-year-old allegedly used a bike containing a motor at January's UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Belgium.

Van den Driessche was banned for violating UCI rules relating to technical fraud while she was also fined 20,000 Swiss francs and ordered to pay legal costs.

The UCI tested 2,000 bikes at May's Giro d'Italia and said its measures were welcomed by riders, teams and organisers, who are cooperating with testing.

"It is clear that all stakeholders in cycling have a common interest to demonstrate that this sort of cheating has no place in the sport," the UCI statement added.

Tour de France champion Floyd Landis tested positive for high levels of testosterone during the race, his Phonak team said on Thursday on its Web site.

The statement came after UCI, cycling's world governing body, said an unidentified rider had failed a drug test during the Tour.

It also came just four days after Landis stood on the victory podium on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The Swiss-based Phonak team said it was notified by the UCI on Wednesday that Landis' sample showed "an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone" when he was tested after stage 17 of the race last Thursday.

Christian Prudhomme, Director of Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), the Tour de France organisers, said that a second test (a "B" sample) would be needed to be confirm the abnormal result.

But he added "the first reaction is that it's of course disappointing that it involves the yellow jersey of the Tour."

"Those who carry on cheating have really bad bad days ahead of them," he said.

Landis rode the Tour with a degenerative hip condition that he has said will require surgery in the coming weeks or months.

Phonak said Landis would ask for an analysis of his backup "B" sample.

Prudhomme said sanctions will come from the UCI, pending on the outcome of the second testing.

Reacting to Thursday's developments Parisians interviewed by AP Television said the news was not surprising

"To climb the Alpes d'Huez mountain at 30km per hour you really must have something in your blood," one person said.

"A bit disappointing but nothing really surprising," said another.

Seven riders, including pre-race favourites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso, were removed from the Tour on the eve of the race after being implicated in a major Spanish doping investigation.

Reaction after 2015 Tour de France route is unveiled in Paris on Wednesday (October 22nd).

The punishing hairpin climb to the Alpe d'Huez ski station high in the French Alps will provide the dramatic climax for the 2015 Tour de France on the last day, before cycling's showcase race sweeps into Paris for its traditional finish before cheering crowds on the Champs-Elysees.

The atypical 2015 route unveiled on Wednesday by Tour organisers also sees a drastically reduced emphasis on time-trialling, plenty of opportunities for sprinters to shine and potential traps that could trip up race favorites, including a return to tricky cobbled roads in northeast France.

The race starts on July 4th in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and ends 3,344 kilometres (2,078 miles) later in Paris on July 26th, going counter-clockwise around France.

His life-and-death battle with cancer may be one of the secrets of his success, American cycling star Lance Armstrong said on Monday, a day after winning his record-tying fifth consecutive Tour de France crown.

Armstrong told a gathering of cancer specialists and survivors of the disease that winning the 23-day, 3,427.5-kilometre (2,125-mile) clockwise race around France was easy compared to the agony of lying sick in a hospital

bed, fighting a devastating illness.

Armstrong spoke at a press conference held before an advisory group of cancer specialists and survivors to U.S. President George W. Bush.

Armstrong was treated in 1996 for testicular cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs.

He returned to competition and won the first of five consecutive Tour titles in 1999.

He has used his celebrity to help raise money for cancer research and survivors.

Around the world, 22.4 million people either have or have had the disease.

STORYLINE

Alberto Contador won the Tour de France on Sunday, a surprise new young winner for the three-week race, which has been tainted by doping allegations.

The 24-year-old Spanish rider for the American Discovery Channel team was the youngest champion since Jan Ullrich of Germany in 1997.

He was also the first Spaniard to stand on the winner's podium since the last of Miguel Indurain's five titles in 1995.

His margin of victory, just 23 seconds ahead of Cadel Evans of Australia, was the second-narrowest in the Tour's 104-year history, after 3,500 kilometres (2,200 miles) of racing through Britain, Belgium, Spain and France.

Contador had seemed destined for second place until the Tour was hit by a bombshell just five days from the finish: the ejection of race leader Michael Rasmussen.

His Rabobank team accused the Dane of having lied about his whereabouts before the Tour to evade doping controls.

Rasmussen's departure catapulted Contador into the race lead, Evans to the runner-up spot, and US rider Levi Leipheimer into third.

Those places held through the closing four days, including a thrilling time trial on Saturday that Leipheimer won, and the 91-mile (146-kilometre) final ride on Sunday to Paris' fan-lined Champs-Elysees from Marcoussis, west of the capital. The stage was won by Daniele Bennati of Italy.

Contador high-fived and hugged his teammates after crossing the line.

His original goal was to take the white jersey for the best young rider.

In the end, he got both white and yellow jerseys.

Contador's personal history is a dramatic one - in 2004, he suffered a massive blood clot in his brain that needed surgery.

While in a hospital, he drew inspiration from reading a book about champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor.

Contador was a new star for a race that has been searching for a successor to Armstrong, who retired in 2005, and which is struggling to repair its credibility after two successive years marred by doping allegations.

The 2006 winner, Floyd Landis, did not defend his crown because of doping charges hanging over him.

This Tour had its share of scandal.

It emerged that Rasmussen was competing despite missing doping controls in May and June, and Kazakh star Alexandre Vinokourov, a pre-race favourite to win, and Cristian Moreni of Italy both failed doping tests.

They and their teams left the race, and police raided their hotels, searching for doping products.

The feel-good factor generated by the race's July 7 start in London, England, watched by millions of fans, quickly faded.

A split emerged as Tour organisers blamed the sport's governing body, the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationel), for not telling them that Rasmussen had missed doping tests.

The organisers said they would have prevented him from taking the start had they known.

The Tour's 94th edition got off to a regular-enough start, with the fast and flatish first week again dominated by sprinters and marked by multiple crashes in the pack.

Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland took the lead on day 1 and wore the yellow jersey for the first week.

But the doping demon quickly returned.

First came news that Patrik Sinkewitz of Germany tested positive for the male hormone testosterone, in a sample taken in June while he was training for the Tour.

Then, over 48 high-drama hours in the last week, came the successive events of Vinokourov's test for a banned blood transfusion, Moreni's positive test for testosterone and Rasmussen's ejection.

On Rasmussen's last day of racing before he was sent home, riders from French and German teams refused to ride off with him at the start, protesting against the scandals in the race.

Tour officials have been looking to the younger generation, ostensibly less influenced by the rife doping in the late 1990s, as a harbinger that cycling is turning a corner.

Riders in their twenties, not in their thirties like Vinokourov and Rasmussen, swept the Tour's top honours.

"Do you think that if UCI and the France Tour that have some differences, but also the media has made them into big differences, agree that Contador can participate and win is there a problem? Honestly, no," said Jaime Lisavetzky, Spanish Deputy Sports Minister after the race.

Third placed Levi Leipheimer said the Tour needed to be looked at from the positive side.

"I think we had some unfortunate incidents during this Tour but it shows the Tour is changing and cycling is changing and I think if you look at it from the positive side it's a good thing."

Denmark's bid to host the 2018 Tour de France Grand Depart was launched in Paris on Monday (20th June).

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Denmark is a country made for cyclists and now the country are looking to build on that reputation by launching a bid to host the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2018.

Their minister for Business and Growth, Troels Lund Poulsen, and the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, launched the official Danish Bid to host the Grand Depart in Paris on Monday.

Succesfully hosted by Yorkshire in England in 2014, the first stage of the Tour brings colour, excitement and a huge profile to the chosen location, something business leaders hope will have an impact not just on the Danish capital but right across the country.

They have the infrastructure and now the official bid also has support both from parliament and the regions, as well as citizens of Denmark.

STORYLINE:

American cyclist Lance Armstrong rode into history on Sunday by winning the Tour de France for a record sixth time, an achievement that confirmed the victory-hungry, cancer survivor as one of the greatest sportsmen of all time.

His sixth crown elevated Armstrong above four great five-time champions.

And never in its 101-year-old history has the Tour had a winner like the Texan who just eight years ago was given less than a 50 percent chance of conquering a deadly form of testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain.

Armstrong's winning margin over second-placed Andreas Kloden was 6 minutes and 19 seconds, with Italian Ivan Basso third on 6:40.

Jan Ullrich, the 1997 Tour winner and five-time runner-up, was fourth, 8:50 adrift.

Armstrong's average speed over the 3,391.1 kilometres (2,102.5 miles) raced was 40.533 kilometres per hour (25.13 miles per hour), second only to last year.

Australian Robbie McEwen won the green jersey, his second, as the Tour's best sprinter.

Armstrong, right hand over his heart, then stood with Kloden and Basso on the podium as the Star Spangled Banner rang out over the Champs-Elysees.

Armstrong, recovered from the cancer diagnosed in 1996, opened a new page for the Tour in 1999 just one year after the race faced its worst doping scandal, ejecting the Festina team after police caught one of its employees with a stash of drugs.

Armstrong's victories and his inspiring comeback from cancer have drawn new fans to the race.

Armstrong's performance this year silenced doubts that, at age 32, he was past his prime.

Even more so than in other Tours that he dominated, Armstrong finished off rivals in the mountains - with three victories in the Alps, including a time trial on the legendary climb to L'Alpe d'Huez, and another in the Pyrenees.

He also took the final time trial on Saturday, even though his overall lead was so big at that point that he didn't need the win.

But Armstrong's race was not without distractions and claims that his success is aided by drugs.

The Texan has repeatedly denied such accusations, attributing his wins to hard training, and says that claims of drug-use only fuel his motivation.

Armstrong still hasn't decided whether he will return next year to compete in the race he loves most, for which he trains relentlessly, leaving his three children in Texas, with his former wife Kristin, while he pounds the roads in Europe.

World and Olympic champion Marianne Vos said on Tuesday (29th April) that women cyclists got a "big boost" when Tour de France organisers agreed to host a one-day race for them in Paris this year - but she's not stopping there.

The first "La Course by Le Tour de France" - a women's race - takes place on 27th July, just hours before their male counterparts riders end their three-week jaunt through Great Britain and France to the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Marianne Vos helped crack a glass ceiling in cycling last year.

She and other riders launched a petition seeking a women's version of the Tour.

After some initial grumbling, race organisers responded.

Vos has made promoting women's cycling a 'cause celebre', and calls herself a "marraine" - French for godmother - of La Course, which is planned to take place in future years.

The Dutch World and Olympic champion will be among the star riders in this year's field.

La Course will cover 90 kilometres (55 miles) and include 13 laps on the Champs-Elysees - with a likely sprint finish, race organisers announced on Tuesday in the French capital.

The winner will receive 22,500 Euros (around U.S. $31,000), the same sum awarded to men for a Tour stage win.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) praised a plan by cycling's governing body - the International Cycling Union (UCI), on Tuesday to create medical profiles of riders, calling it major step in fighting doping that other sports should follow.

WADA Director General David Howman, at a two-day conference in Paris on doping in professional cycling, praised the for devising the so-called 'biological passport' in a new show of unity after recent high-profile disputes between the two organisations.

The UCI, Tour de France organisers and the World Anti-Doping Agency have variously pointed fingers over who deserves blame for the doping scandals that have battered cycling.

The "biological passport" which was first announced by UCI last week, would monitor a series of blood parameters of a rider, creating a medical profile that could be compared to the results of anti-doping tests.

Roselyne Bachelot, French sports minister said that the new system would be more effective because it would enable the detection of previously untraceable performance enhancers.

"We have agreed on the blood passport and we see that we were in a kind of race where we were always a step behind" she said; "that is to say we were detecting some products but science had always found some other ones which were not detected (in anti-doping controls). So the blood passport is a method which anticipate all that because we do not follow the products anymore but we follow the sportsman."

World Anti-Doping Agency president Dick Pound, said that the sport had in the past made the mistake of thinking it had an effective anti-doping program simply because a lot of tests were carried out.

"Our view has always been you could have a much lower number of tests but if you have smart test and you do it at the right time, you'll have a more effective programme", he said.

UCI cycling federation president Pat McQuaid said that, with the new system in place, competitors would feel that it was simply too risky to use drugs.

Cheered on by thousands of fans undeterred by the recent spate of violence across Europe, Chris Froome celebrated his third Tour de France title in four years.

He finished safely at the back of the main pack in the final stage, arm-in-arm with his teammates during the mostly ceremonial leg ending on the cobblestones below the Arc de Triomphe.
