STORYLINE:

His life-and-death battle with cancer may be one of the secrets of his success, American cycling star Lance Armstrong said on Monday, a day after winning his record-tying fifth consecutive Tour de France crown.

Armstrong told a gathering of cancer specialists and survivors of the disease that winning the 23-day, 3,427.5-kilometre (2,125-mile) clockwise race around France was easy compared to the agony of lying sick in a hospital

bed, fighting a devastating illness.

Armstrong spoke at a press conference held before an advisory group of cancer specialists and survivors to U.S. President George W. Bush.

Armstrong was treated in 1996 for testicular cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs.

He returned to competition and won the first of five consecutive Tour titles in 1999.

He has used his celebrity to help raise money for cancer research and survivors.

Around the world, 22.4 million people either have or have had the disease.

HEADLINE: Tour de France champ fails doping test

It's another black eye for the sport of cycling.

We're learning that reigning Tour de France champion Alberto Contador (kahn-ta-door) tested positive for a banned substance during the July race.

The Spaniard is admitting as such but at a press conference Thursday he blamed the results on contaminated meat.

He also made clear that what was found in two samples taken from him were miniscule amounts.

The U-C-I, which is cycling's governing body has provisionally suspended the three-time Tour winner.

However it's not clear if Contador will be stripped of the yellow jersey.

The drug in question has anabolic properties that build muscle while burning fat.

Contador insists he must have ingested it when he ate some meat on the day in question and he says the U-C-I backs him on that.

Contador is the cycling's biggest star now that Lance Armstrong has retired and this positive test for Contador as well as others continue to discredit the sport worldwide.

A court on Friday acquitted French cycling star Richard Virenque of a role in a scheme to supply drugs to his former Festina team.

However they did convict the team's former trainer and the former physiotherapist, ending the trial that grew out of the doping scandal that nearly wrecked the 1998 Tour de France.

Six others defendants, from a pharmacist to the doctor from the Once team, Nicolas Terrados, who received a 30-thousand franc (42-hundred U-S dollar) fine plus a customs fine of 15-thousand francs (2,145 U-S dollar), were also sentenced.

The other sentences ranged from a five-month a 10-thousand franc (1,430 U-S dollar) fine for a pharmacy accountant, Eric Paranier, to a nine-month suspended sentence and fine for the former trainer of the Francaise des Jeux team.

Bruno Roussel, the former trainer, was sentenced to a one-year suspended prison sentence and fined 50-thousand francs (7-thousand U-S dollars).

Willy Voet, the physiotherapist, was given a 10-month suspended sentence and a 30-thousand franc (42-hundred U-S dollars) fine.

Virenque, a star climber, broke down during the dramatic fall trial in this northern French city and admitted that he had taken illicit products.

Until then, he had insisted that he did not take drugs even though it was established that the Festoon team used doping products systematically.

Virenque had been charged with "complicity to facilitate and incite the use of doping products."

Roussel and Voet were convicted under the same charges.

However, the International Cycling Union is expected to rule December 29 on sanctions against Virenque.

The court followed the prosecutors recommendations to drop charges against Virenque and order suspended sentences for the others.

The scandal surrounding the Festina team broke when Voet was caught at the French-Belgian border, just before the start of the Tour de France, with a stash of illicit products, notably the performance-enhancing EPO, in the team car he was driving.

Festina was expelled from the Tour, which was then dogged throughout by the scandal, as police followed riders, searching hotel rooms for suspected drugs.

The best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code" has helped draw 13 percent more American tourists to Paris in the first five months of this year compared to 2003, the Paris Tourist Board said.

Tourists are flocking to key sights featured in Dan Brown's novel, particularly the Louvre Museum, which houses the Mona Lisa, and to the Saint-Sulpice Church on Paris' Left Bank.

"The Da Vinci Code" is a mix of code-breaking, art history, secret societies, religion and lore, all wrapped up in short, frenetic chapters.

The novel is the No. 1 fiction book in France, where intellectuals dissect it on television panels and in the editorial pages.

In the United States, the book is No. 1 on the New York Times best seller list, where it has featured for 76 weeks.

Parisian travel agencies are cashing in, offering Da Vinci code tours.

Tour guide Jean-Manuel Traimond said his aim is to debunk the myths behind the book, because he believes most of Brown's facts about Paris' famous sites are inaccurate.

Michel Rougé, parishioner in charge of Saint-Sulpice volunteer guides, welcomed the attention the church is getting but he not pleased by how many tourists visiting St Sulpice want to believe the myths written in the book.

Jerry McDonald, from West Virginia, was so taken by the book he and his wife spent their European holiday tracking the path of the Da Vinci code in Paris and London.

German tourist Simona Meyer said she isn't bothered by the blurring of the lines between fact and fiction: "Part of what's so interesting is guessing how much is true."

Rock star Bono on Thursday urged French President Jacques Chirac to be "a champion for Africa" when he and other world leaders meet next week to discuss a new African development plan.

Prior to visiting the French leader at his presidential Elysee Palace, the U2 singer said Chirac had "been in Africa more than any other politician", adding: "He has a passion for Africa and I want to turn his passion into cash."

After their meeting, Bono said Chirac had pledged to reverse the decline in French aid contributions to the continent.

France and other Group of Eight nations will discuss the new plan for Africa at a June 26-27 meeting in Canada.

It offers a package of trade and aid help for Africa, coupled with assistance in ending civil wars and improving governance across the continent.

Chirac said he hoped for progress at the summit and pledged that "France will play its part."

The French leader said it was essential that industrial nations cancel or reduce debts owed by poor nations and improve development aid.

Bono recently accompanied US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill on a 12-day tour of Africa to press for debt relief and more aid.

FLAMENCO CHEERS UP DOWN-AND-OUT BRAZILIANS

The worldwide famous Flamenco dancer Antonio Marquez and his company are on tour in Brazil, performing on some of the main Brazilian stages, for 20 days. But this Sunday, to celebrate the last week of the Brazilian tour, the Antonio Marquez Company did an open-air concert in one of the most violent places in Brazil: the city of Nova Iguacu, in Rio de Janeiro State. The city is located in an area called "Baixada Fluminense", which made international headlines at the beginning of the 90´s due to the drug war and violent crime.

The local population started to arrive early at the concert location. The show cost US$ 100 thousand to the local Mayor's Office, but was free for the audience. It was the first time ever that a famous international name stepped into the infamous town. Most people in Nova Iguacu have never seen a Flamenco dance, and it was an event not to be missed.

One of the most excited members of the audience was Enizia Cunha da Silva, a 26 year-old single mother with two sons. She lives with two other families. In total, 16 people live in her house, where the average income is of 150 Reais per month ( around US$ 75). For Enizia, who knew what the samba is, but had never heard of Flamenco dance, it was a totally new experience.

Moments before the concert started, Antonio Marquez left his dressing room to meet the press. For the 37-year-old dancer, it was important to take his concert beyond the main Brazilian stages, in a area famous for its violence.

In one and a half hours, the Antonio Marquez Dance Company showed the local population why they are one of the best Flamenco dance groups in the world. With 12 ballerinas and 5 musicians, the group performed the same concert that they brought to the posh stages in the main Brazilian cities, like Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Curitiba: a choreography inspired by Bizet's Carmen, called "El Matador - Despues de Carmen", a mix of Flamenco Dance and classical ballet.

In the second part, called "Movimiento Flamenco", Antonio Marquez had the opportunity to show all his technique, travelling through the various Flamenco styles, where music, rhythm and dance get together in harmony.

The Antonio Marquez Company was created in 1995, in Sevilha - where the dancer was born - with the aim of bring Flamenco back to its roots. In 1996, the group did their first Spanish tour. In 1997, Antonio Marquez won the Nureyev Prize, the higest dance prize in Spain.

In 1998, the group visited Italy, Portugal and Japan, in their first international tour. In 1999, the company launched "Despues de Carmen" in the Theatre of Madrid. The year 2000 was celebrated with tours in Italy, Portugal, Japan, Austria and France. In France, Antonio Marquez did a choreography for the new version of "Don Quixote" for the Paris Opera.

The local audience was amazed with the Flamenco concert. One university teacher from Chile was also delighted with the integration between the Latin American cultures that the concert brings to the audience.

The Antonio Marquez Dance Company finishes the 20-day tour in Brazil this Wednesday, April, 11th, with a concert in the city of Nova Friburgo, in Rio de Janeiro State. For this year, the Spanish company has two other international tours: Italy and United States.

HEART TRUTH RED FASHION SHOW

The show must go on. Sheryl Crow proved she's a pro by showing up to do her bit for the 'Heart Truth Red Fashion Show' in New York on Friday. Only hours after AP Television spoke with Crow backstage at the benefit event, it was announced in a joint statement that she and fiance Lance Armstrong had split.

The seven-time Tour de France champion and the rock star announced their engagement in September. It would have been her first marriage and his second. He has three children from a previous marriage.

"After much thought and consideration we have made a very tough decision to split up. We both have a deep love and respect for each other and we ask that everyone respect our privacy during this very difficult time," the statement said.

Part of what makes New York's Fashion Week such a buzz-about-town event is the number of celebrities who show up to scope out the hottest designers and latest trends. At the 'Heart Truth Red Dress ' fashion show, held under the tents at Bryant Park, there were A-listers not only in the audience, but on the runway.

Joining Crow on the catwalk were more than 20 female musicians including Lindsay Lohan, Emmylou Harris, LeAnn Rimes, Deborah Harry, Lee Ann Womack, Thalia, and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas. Also strutting their stuff in red designer outfits -- Amerie, Bebe Neuwirth, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Phillips, Natasha Bedingfield, Nelly Furtado, and Yolanda Adams and 81-year-old Elaine Stritch.

For the past four years the fashion industry has teamed up with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to present the Red Dress Collection -- an ensemble of one-of-a-kind red dresses created to help raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in women 25 and older.

Lending their talent to the cause were 21 top designers including: Betsey Johnson, BCBG Max Azria, Calvin Klein, Carmen Marc Valvo, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Esteban Cortazar, Kenneth Cole, Luca Luca, Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, Nicole Miller, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Sean by Sean Combs,Tracy Reese, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, and Zac Posen.

The effort aims to spread the word that heart disease is largely preventable. According to the NHLBI, leading a healthy lifestyle -- following a sensible diet, getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking -- can lower the risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent.

Some risk factors, such as age (55 or older for women) and a family history of early heart disease, can't be changed. Women can, however, control certain risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being overweight or obese, and being physically inactive.

African American and Hispanic women, in particular, have higher rates of some risk factors for heart disease and are disproportionately affected by the disease. More than 80 percent of midlife African American women are overweight or obese, 52 percent have hypertension, and 14 percent have been diagnosed with diabetes. Some 83 percent of midlife Hispanic women are overweight or obese, and more than 10 percent have been diagnosed with diabetes.

The fashion show and live musical performance kicked off 'National Wear Red Day,' part of NHLBI's heart disease awareness campaign for women. Also sponsoring the fashion show --Johnson & Johnson and affiliated companies, Celestial Seasonings, and Swarovski.

MCQUEEN TAKES ON DARWIN FOR PARIS FASHION SHOW

It's not everyday you can say with certainty "now, that's a fashion show that Charles Darwin would have liked." But McQueen's tour de force collection, a sort of "Origin of Species" in a few dozen cocktail dresses, would undoubtedly have garnered a standing ovation from the father of the theory of evolution.

The Tuesday (6 Oct. 2009) show started with reptiles: Models perched on impossibly high platform booties that were convex through the top of the foot, their hair a serpent's den of cornrows, wore short dresses in snakeskin-light chiffon printed with the scales of copperheads and cobras.

Exquisite pleating created strange and wonderful volumes on the shoulders, sleeves and hips, which were worked with an almost courtly savoir faire.

Bubbly metallic panelling on some of the dresses glinted like scales.

Then came the winged creatures, owls and insects, whose markings morphed into hallucinatory prints on the feathery chiffon.

Next up, aquatic creatures. The palette shifted from rusty browns and mustardy yellows to a spectrum of blues, purples and grays.

Along with the dresses, we got deep-sea gear, with neoprene layered over shimmering microfibers. The booties, embellished with metalwork, glimmered darkly, like an oil spill.

Two gravity-defying peaks, like sleek, aerodynamic antennae, replaced the snaky cornrows. Like super-evolved future humans, the girls grew fleshy ridges on their temples.

Then McQueen went intergalactic, sending out girls who looked like distant nebulae, naked but for a cloud of metallic fabric that swirled around their hips and up their midriffs.

And finally, a star cluster? A dress and matching leggings covered with blinding gold bubbles closed the show.

It was breathtaking, and filled with too much fine work and too many grand references to take in at once.

Not only the most ambitious show yet of Paris' ready-to-wear displays, McQueen's sartorial synthesis of evolution was also the most brilliant.

KYLIE MINOGUE HONORS JPGAULTIER AT AMFAR

The city's fashion glitterati poured into Maxim's de Paris to drink, dine, and watch the pop star Kylie Minogue give an award to the French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier for his contribution to fashion and his dedication to the fight against AIDS, during the second ever amfAR Inspiration gala.

The soir�e, timed to coincide with the Paris menswear shows, was part of a new amfAR event series which kicked off in New York three weeks ago and will next travel to Los Angeles.

amfAR, the foundation for AIDS Research, is one of the world's leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research and HIV prevention. The design theme of the event was "Black Tie/Black Leather," and Minogue glowed in a sassy black feathered dress by Gaultier, who has long been one of her favorite designers.

GALLIANO RE-SPHINK'S FASHION

John Galliano brought ancient Egypt back from the tombs for his spring haute couture show Monday for Dior - and the result never looked so glitzy or modern.

Dazzled by a recent trip to Egypt, Galliano turned out a mind-boggling collection that would have stunned even Queen Nefertiti.

The burst of talent was a shot into the arm of haute couture as spring shows began.

Galliano's presentations are more about spectacle than clothes, and they aim for dramatic moments.

This parade offered a few wearable articles for the multimillionaire, such as draped chiffon sheaths glittering with crystal embroidery for a gala

entrance to the ball.

There were also gold sheathes to be admired, if somewhat hard to wear. One was topped with foil and huge bows, and another with mirrors and scaly gold fabric in a long basque line.

The show - held in a tent within the grounds of the exclusive Polo Club in the Bois de Boulogne - drew notables including Sarah Jessica Parker of 'Sex

and the City' and glamorous rock chick Gwen Stefani

Galliano's take on the ancients included enormous, billowing or skintight skirts, sometimes looking like Egyptian frescoes.

There were fantastic headdresses based on ancient silhouettes, from fertility goddess Isis to dog-head Anubis to hawk Horus, keeper of wisdom.

Most of all, this was a fabulous fabric show. From the generous skirt in matte gold leaves piled up in clever layers, to the scaly stretch body suit

in shiny turquoise with the Egypt-inspired turquoise and coral bib necklace, it was a rich treat.

The flame and flower dresses were a tour de force, especially the graded pastel organza flower shapes in skirts, or big stoles.

Galliano took his bow looking sleek in a fitted pinstripe suit, and he was clean-shaven and wearing a hoop earring. It was his best show for several seasons.

Paris Fashion Week ends in style, with Chanel, Galliano and Westwood

Day six of the ten-day Paris fashion extravaganza began with Chanel presenting its collection at the Opera Bastille. German designer Karl Lagerfeld produced classic Chanel designs with a touch of modernity. There was no Aida or Traviata, but modern music, a raft of celebrity fans from Rothschilds to film star Carole Bouquet, plus a slew of today's trendy models like Alec Wek or carrot-topped Karen Elsen. After his Red Army themed outfits for Dior, English designer John Galliano went for a very different look for his own label, with a creative and ravishing tour de force.

British couture queen Vivienne Westwood surprised and delighted an enthusiastic crowd at the Paris Stock Exchange with her Spring-Summer 1999 collection of ready-to-wear fashion. Her 'Gold Collection' featured less formal, highly wearable, and as always, body-hugging dresses. Dresses - generally just below the knee - were tight-fitting but flowing from the waist. Many dresses were made of soft-flowing fabric that hugs the body, with her trademark jackets covering a healthy cleavage.

So I thought this little thing around the ankle - a new area where nobody had focused - since the rehab thing (inaudible) suddenly it became a fashion point also because trendy girls have that thing and the other young girls admire that, they would even wear fake ones because they think it's trendy to have one. So I put a little handbag there. And I've discovered that one of the models, Racquel Zimmerman - who was one of the great models here - sat down in the studio and tried to put something...and it was a beautiful dress, and I saw a woman in a nightclub sitting on a banquette crossing her legs and it was much easier than if she was looking in some huge shopping bag. So I thought it was a very familiar thing which gave a new gesture to the attitude of women. As the beautiful attitude of smoking doesn't exist it was a way to touch the ankle, to give another feminine attitude to that."

Did anyone say Oscars?

Front-row guest Anne Hathaway said she wasn''t sure she''d be attending this year''s Academy Awards, but added that she had her eye on "about seven" looks from Armani''s lunar-themed collection.

Certainly, whatever the occasion, "The Devil Wears Prada" star couldn''t go wrong with the princess bustier dress in gleaming white silk shot through with shiny lurex and bedazzled with sequins she wore to Monday''s Haute Couture (25 Jan. 10) show.

In keeping with the collection''s moon theme, Armani replaced the suits'' buttons with oversized crescent closures and added full moon shaped flaps to the dresses'' necklines.

One long and lean evening gown in midnight blue had a crescent shape cutout on the back, and some of the models carried rhinestone-encrusted new moon clutches.

Still, the collection broke little new ground for Armani, whose clean lined suits and classic dresses have attracted a small army of fans among top players in Hollywood and beyond.

Tina Turner, who was a seat down from Hathaway, said she was looking forward to seeing what Armani had in store for the summer and by the end of show she wasn''t disappointed:
