STORYLINE: Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme spoke on Tuesday (18th June) and tipped Chris Froome to emerge victorious in this years race.

The director of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme, expects that the 2013 event, the 100th edition of the Tour de France, will be a scenario of Team Sky against the rest of the world, with Christopher Froome as the undisputed leader of his team.

He expects Bradley Wiggins to come roaring back in 2014 after not defending his crown in this year's race, which starts in just over a week. "I think he'll have his motivation back and be back," Christian Prudhomme said in an interview on Tuesday in his Paris office.

Elite athletes, he noted, "can fall very low but rebound very quickly."

The first two stages in 2014 run through Yorkshire in northeast England, with the third going from Cambridge to London, so Wiggins will be on home ground. "I think he'll be very strong," Prudhomme said.

About the doping affairs in the Tour, Prudhomme said: "One of the fundamental questions is the capacity of finding the substances. If the medical corps would be capable to find all the substances, there would be no doubt at all. And the last years, the gap has been considerably tightened between those who cheat and those who track down the cheaters."

Prudhomme warned that the first stages on the French island of Corsica could be treacherous.

After a flat opening stage on June 29 that British sprinter Mark Cavendish, among others, will have his eye on, the race ventures over more jagged terrain inland and up the island's west coast.

From Corsica, the Tour crosses to the French mainland.

"Those who haven't scouted the Corsican stages will have made a big mistake. On the evening of the first stage, they'll be telling themselves, "It's all flat!" Prudhomme said. "Two days later they will have understood why the automobile Tour of Corsica is called `The Rally of ten thousand Bends.' Not only does it go up and down, it turns all the time."

Christian Prudhomme, himself a passionate supporter of cycling, remains optimistic for the popularity of the sport: "Cycling is a sport for families, for people who are happy to be there, for people smiling."

Chris Froome and other riders reacted after the 2017 Tour de France route was unveiled on Tuesday (18th October).

All five mountain ranges of continental France will feature in next year's Tour de France, setting up a gruelling, three-week racing challenge that seems tailor-made for the climbing strengths of defending champion Chris Froome and his Colombian rival, Nairo Quintana.

In their quest to keep the 113-year-old race young, organisers have again unearthed fresh racing challenges from the geography of France, with new climbs and, on stage 18, an unprecedented mountain-top finish on the punishing Col d'Izoard high in the Alps - a rocky, hostile and lunar terrain that could be the final big battleground for the winner's check of 500,000 euros ($550,000).

Before that, on stage 12 in the Pyrenees, the Tour climbs to the Peyragudes ski station where parts of the James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" were filmed in 1997.

From its July 1 start in Duesseldorf, Germany, to the July 23 finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, the 3,516-kilometre (2,185-mile) route will wind over climbs in the Vosges, Jura, Massif Central, Pyrenees and Alps. Not since the Tour of 1992 have organisers made riders take on all five mountain ranges.

For the sixth time in the history of Tour de France, the Grand Depart of cycling's showpiece event will be the Netherlands.

After Amsterdam (1954), Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978), 'S-Hertogenbosch (1996) and Rotterdam (2010), now it is the time for the Dutch town of Utrecht. The first stage will be an individual time-trial in whole town, from west to east and back, crossing the historic city.

Two Dutch riders have won the Tour de France, Jan Janssen in 1968 and Joop Zoetemelk in 1980.

With more bicycles than inhabitants and parking near the railway station for 20,000 bicycles, for organisers there is no more need to justify the passion for cycling in Utrecht.

The French government on Tuesday (24th May) announced increased security for this year's Tour de France.

Cyclists on this year's Tour de France will be under the watch of 23,000 police officers, including SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics)-like intervention squads as the government tries to ensure security amid extremist threats.

France has been in a state of emergency since the attacks on Paris in November 2015 killed 130 people, with soldiers guarding landmarks and religious sites.

The emergency measures were extended last week to cover the European Championship next month and the Tour de France, which runs between the 2nd and 24th of July.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve met Christian Prudhomme, the president of the organization which runs the Tour, and afterwards announced exceptional security measures for this year's race.

Securing the Tour is unusually difficult, as crowds gather informally on narrow mountain roads and city streets along thousands of kilometres around France.

Reaction after 2015 Tour de France route is unveiled in Paris on Wednesday (October 22nd).

The punishing hairpin climb to the Alpe d'Huez ski station high in the French Alps will provide the dramatic climax for the 2015 Tour de France on the last day, before cycling's showcase race sweeps into Paris for its traditional finish before cheering crowds on the Champs-Elysees.

The atypical 2015 route unveiled on Wednesday by Tour organisers also sees a drastically reduced emphasis on time-trialling, plenty of opportunities for sprinters to shine and potential traps that could trip up race favorites, including a return to tricky cobbled roads in northeast France.

The race starts on July 4th in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and ends 3,344 kilometres (2,078 miles) later in Paris on July 26th, going counter-clockwise around France.

World and Olympic champion Marianne Vos said on Tuesday (29th April) that women cyclists got a "big boost" when Tour de France organisers agreed to host a one-day race for them in Paris this year - but she's not stopping there.

La Course will cover 90 kilometres (55 miles) and include 13 laps on the Champs-Elysees - with a likely sprint finish, race organisers announced on Tuesday in the French capital.

The winner will receive 22,500 Euros (around U.S. $31,000), the same sum awarded to men for a Tour stage win.

He finished safely at the back of the main pack in the final stage, arm-in-arm with his teammates during the mostly ceremonial leg ending on the cobblestones below the Arc de Triomphe.

Reaction after the route for the 2016 Tour de France was unveiled in Paris on Tuesday (20th October).

Chris Froome fancies his chances of defending the Tour de France title on a route that should suit his all-around riding skills.

Two individual time trials and 28 tough climbs will be on the 2016 Tour de France's 3,519-kilometre (2,186-mile) route, which was revealed in France on Tuesday.

Froome, who also won in 2013, is strong both on climbs and in individual time trials, making him an early favourite for 2016.

An ascent of Mont Ventoux in Provence on Bastille Day (14th July) will test the best climbers.

Froome was the stage winner when the Tour last scaled the Ventoux's barren, 1,909-metre (6,263-feet) peak in 2013 and he will be eyeing that stage for another victory.

The Mont-Saint-Michel, a Benedictine abbey perched on a rock off the Normandy coast, will provide a picture-postcard start for the race.

The first stage ends at Utah Beach, where Allied troops landed on D-Day in 1944.

The first taste of the mountains will come on stage five, in the Massif Central.

From there, there will be little respite on the next 15 stages before the last ride into Paris.

The first of the time trial on stage 13, a day after the Ventoux ascent, combines two short climbs, long flats and a tricky descent over 37 kilometres (23 miles).

Riders hoping to win time-trial gold the following month at the Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro will be able to use that tough course to gauge their form.

After the Pyrenees, where the Tour will dip into Spain and Andorra, the final placings will be decided in the Alps and neighbouring Switzerland before the finish in Paris on 24th of July.

Czech car manufacturer Skoda has been revealed as the new sponsor of the Tour de France green jersey, replacing long-term partner PMU.

The French betting company has been synonymous with the sprinters jersey for almost a quarter of a century but last November revealed it will cease its involvement with the three-week Tour.

Skoda is no stranger to cycling, let alone the Tour de France, having worked as an official partner of the race for the last ten years.

PMU has decided to move into sponsoring soccer, putting its name to the French Cup and backing one of the country's leading clubs, Paris St Germain.

At the launch of the new sponsorship deal in Paris on Monday (March 23), Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme was reluctant to answer questions about Lance Armstrong who plans to plans to ride part of the Tour de France route for charity a day before the official race.

But the disgraced cyclist got the backing of Ireland's Stephen Roche, the winner of the 1987 Tour, who said Armstrong had not killed anybody and had inspired a lot of very ill people.

Reaction following the announcement of the route for the 100th Tour de France made in Paris on Wednesday (24 October).

Wednesday's presentation in Paris of the 2013 route for the Tour de France was clouded by concerns about doping after Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles on Monday following a US probe.

On Wednesday, cycling teams called for an independent audit into the sport's fight against doping.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme, announcing the route, took a firm line and sought to move on.

"Doping is the enemy," he said. "The Tour will be stronger than doping."

The management committee of the UCI (International Cycling Union), cycling's world governing body, will meet on Friday to discuss whether Armstrong's titles and prize money will be re-distributed, following which the International Olympic Committee will make a decision on the bronze medal Armstrong won in Sydney in 2000.

Armstrong has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and refused to co-operate with the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) investigation.

Bradley Wiggins became the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France by protecting the yellow jersey during Sunday's (July 22) final processional ride into Paris.

He also helped Sky teammate Mark Cavendish earn his fourth straight sprint victory on the Champs-Elysees.

British fans cheered and waved flags as Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France in Paris.

"It is not just today," said British supporter James How, "...it is the last two years, we have got the world champion, the Tour de France winner, hopefully the Olympic champion in a week, top of the world!"

Supporter Matthew Crisp said he can finally ride his bicycle proudly in England.

"I guess it does not make me look so stupid when I am wearing lycra on the streets," said Crisp, "I have been cycling for a couple of years, and I am just glad that we can finally bring it home."

Before going on a victory lap on the Champs Elysees, Wiggins climbed on a Team Sky Jaguar car.

Team Sky Sports Director Sean Yates called this victory "a dream come true."

Former Tour de France champion and cycling legend Lance Armstrong completed a two-day charity ride a day in advance of Tour de France stages 13 and 14 on Friday (July 17) - with the aim of raising awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.

Lance Armstrong, the disgraced and controversial cyclist, was back on two wheels in Les Vignes, France on Friday.

The American, stripped of his seven Tour victories for doping, set off early on Thursday morning (July 16) with former footballer Geoff Thomas, who is raising funds to fight Leukaemia.

The pair, and several other riders, were tackling the Tour route one day ahead of the actual race.

Armstrong rode two stages, starting with Thursday's trek from Venerque to Rodez and finishing with the Rodez to Mende stage on Friday.

Riding with amateurs and without hordes of fans cheering him on is a major step down from Armstrong's heyday from 1999-2005, when winning the Tour turned the cancer survivor into a superstar.

Armstrong's return to French cycling routes were received with mixed feelings both by the media and fans.

Team Sky look ahead to the 2015 season at an open media training day in Mallorca, Spain on Sunday (January 11).

Team Sky begin the new year - as usual - in Mallorca, Spain.

The highly successful British outfit are on the Spanish island for a training camp ahead of the new season and, on Sunday, invited the worlds media to join them.

It gave Team Principal Sir David Brailsford - and his stable of world-beating riders - the chance to state the team's intentions as they prepare their assault on the new cycling season.

On the fifth anniversary of its launch, Team Sky have set out their vision for the next five years.

And after 165 wins in five years, guiding two different British men to Tour De France victory - and achieving their aim of getting one million more 'Brits' out on their bikes - it's a difficult benchmark to better.

Brailsford was quick to target a Classic's win for Team Sky as he spoke to the media in Spain.

The Team Principal is under no illusions that strong performances in the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and La Vuelta are expected but also spoke of his desire to see his team truly test their mettle in some of cycling's toughest one-day races.

With a variety of experience and youth the team are seemingly in a position to take on anything.

2013 Tour de France winner Chris Froome is eager to claim another win in cycling's most famous race and revealed it as his biggest target in 2015, with Alberto Contador singled out as his main rival for the gruelling race.

The team have also been bolstered by the recent news that Sir Bradley Wiggins has signed a contract extension that will see him ride with Team Sky up to and including Paris-Roubaix 2015.

Wiggins joined the team for our inaugural season in 2010 and created history in 2012 when he became the first British rider to win the Tour de France.

A plethora of new arrivals are also eager to start the season with the likes of Czech rider Leopold Konig and Nicolas Roche hoping to do their duty to their new team as the 2015 season gets underway - with the weight of expectation truly on the shoulders of Team Sky.

Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins announced on Thursday (24th January) that he will start his 2013 season at the Mallorca Challenge early next month. He also gave his thoughts on the upcoming season and doping in the sport.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

2012 was a year to remember for Bradley Wiggins, the Team Sky rider won the Tour de France, picked up gold in the Olympic time trial and received a knighthood from the Queen in the New Years honours list.

But attentions now turn to the 2013 and the Englishman will start his season at the Mallorca Challenge, which takes place from February 3rd-6th.

Team Sky have been doing their winter training on the Spanish island.

Wiggins will also compete at the Giro d'Italia in May, which he described as his "priority", before he defends his Tour de France title in June and July.

Wiggins believes that his Sky teammate Chris Froome, who was second in last years Tour de France, will be the team leader this year

"The likelihood is Chris will be the leader, but it's not a bad thing having two people, two strong riders going into that because a lot can happen between now and then." he said.

Wiggins also gave his thoughts on doping in cycling - "we need to look to our governing body now, which is the UCI, to take leadership and them to act on it really. As riders we just continue what we are doing."

Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford believes that cycling is changing for the better.

"I think the way that the sport had gone previously is very, very different from what it is now and we're very, very confident that Bradley demonstrated that you can win the Tour de France clean."

Team Sky have a zero tolerance when it comes to drugs, which has led to some staff leaving the team, but Brailsford was confident that the changes in personnel won't drastically impact the teams performance.

"It will impact to a certain extent for sure, but we have new people, we recruited good new people into the role and we're very positive going forward that we'll have a good season." he said.

Chris Froome revealed he is waiting until the Tour of Oman to begin his season.

He will also ride the Criterium du Dauphine in June, a a race Team Sky has won for the last two years.

Froome will then joins Wiggins at the Tour de France.

The Kenyan-born cyclist described this years Tour as "a lot harder than last year's Tour" and added "I think the course is going to suit a climber very well, a climber but a climber who needs to be able to time trial also".

Australia’s Olympic road cycling hopefuls spoke to the media on Wednesday (3rd August) ahead of the start of the Rio Games.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Richie Porte is confident he can take on the world's best on his Olympic debut in Rio, although he admitted on Wednesday that fatigue may play a part in the road race, as many of the leading riders have only just finished competing in the Tour de France.

The Australian, a two-time winner of the Paris-Nice, will line up on Saturday (6th August), with the stage set for one of the toughest and most explosive Olympic road races in history.

Organisers have delivered a pure climber's course over 256-kilometres (159-miles) of undulating roads - and the tropical heat of Rio will only add to the difficulty.

Rohan Dennis was part of the BMC team in support of Porte at the Tour de France last month, but he withdrew on the second rest day to focus on his preparations for the Olympic road race and individual time trial.

Dennis, who was part of Australia's silver-medal winning team pursuit squad at the 2012 Games, played down the effect of a training crash suffered in Rio on Monday (1st August), saying that everyone was working hard to make sure he was "100 per cent for race day".

Simon Gerrans is another world-class rider selected for the Australian road race team.

The 36-year-old veteran will wear the green and gold colours of Australia at his third Games as he aims to take home his first Olympic medal.

The last Australian Olympic road medallist was Michael Rogers, who won a time trial bronze in 2004.

Slovakian cycling star Peter Sagan spoke on Tuesday (16th August) about the returns to his roots as he seeks gold in the cross-country mountain bike event at the Rio Olympics.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Slovakia's biggest sporting star, Peter Sagan is returning to his roots after he opted to race in the cross-country mountain bike event instead of the road race in Rio.

Sagan, who has three stage wins on the Tour de France and has won the points classification for the last five years, believes his road cycling experience may not be of much help in mountain biking.

The Slovakian, however, started his career on the mountain bikes when he won the 2008 junior cross-country world championship.

Sagan contested in two mountain bike events earlier in the year to qualify for the Olympics.

The 26-year-old will face seasoned cross-country riders such as Julien Absalon (France), Nino Schurter (Switzerland) and 2012 Olympic champion Jaroslav Kulhavy (Czech Republic).

STORYLINE:

Colombia's Nairo Quintana said on Tuesday (6th September) that he's in good shape to win the Vuelta a Espana with five stages remaining.

Vuelta a Espana leader Nairo Quintana was in confident mood at his rest day press conference on Tuesday - stating that he "physically ready" for the climbs ahead.

With five stages remaining, the Colombian Movistar rider holds a lead of three minutes 37 seconds over Tour de France champion Chris Froome with another Colombian Esteban Chaves in third, a further 20 seconds back.

Quintana has never won the Vuelta, finishing fourth last year and withdrawing in 2014 due to a broken collarbone.

But so far in this year's edition, the 26 year-old has been in imperious form, making up for a rather subdued showing in the Tour de France, won by Froome.

Quintana's advantage on Froome is likely to keep him in the red jersey all the way to the finish of the race in Madrid, even allowing for the time trial, traditionally one of the Briton's strengths.

The rider himself said at his press conference that he believes his lead "should be sufficient."
