STORYLINE: Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme spoke on Tuesday (18th June) and tipped Chris Froome to emerge victorious in this years race.

The director of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme, expects that the 2013 event, the 100th edition of the Tour de France, will be a scenario of Team Sky against the rest of the world, with Christopher Froome as the undisputed leader of his team.

He expects Bradley Wiggins to come roaring back in 2014 after not defending his crown in this year's race, which starts in just over a week. "I think he'll have his motivation back and be back," Christian Prudhomme said in an interview on Tuesday in his Paris office.

Elite athletes, he noted, "can fall very low but rebound very quickly."

The first two stages in 2014 run through Yorkshire in northeast England, with the third going from Cambridge to London, so Wiggins will be on home ground. "I think he'll be very strong," Prudhomme said.

About the doping affairs in the Tour, Prudhomme said: "One of the fundamental questions is the capacity of finding the substances. If the medical corps would be capable to find all the substances, there would be no doubt at all. And the last years, the gap has been considerably tightened between those who cheat and those who track down the cheaters."

Prudhomme warned that the first stages on the French island of Corsica could be treacherous.

After a flat opening stage on June 29 that British sprinter Mark Cavendish, among others, will have his eye on, the race ventures over more jagged terrain inland and up the island's west coast.

From Corsica, the Tour crosses to the French mainland.

"Those who haven't scouted the Corsican stages will have made a big mistake. On the evening of the first stage, they'll be telling themselves, "It's all flat!" Prudhomme said. "Two days later they will have understood why the automobile Tour of Corsica is called `The Rally of ten thousand Bends.' Not only does it go up and down, it turns all the time."

For the sixth time in the history of Tour de France, the Grand Depart of cycling's showpiece event will be the Netherlands.

After Amsterdam (1954), Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978), 'S-Hertogenbosch (1996) and Rotterdam (2010), now it is the time for the Dutch town of Utrecht. The first stage will be an individual time-trial in whole town, from west to east and back, crossing the historic city.

Two Dutch riders have won the Tour de France, Jan Janssen in 1968 and Joop Zoetemelk in 1980.

With more bicycles than inhabitants and parking near the railway station for 20,000 bicycles, for organisers there is no more need to justify the passion for cycling in Utrecht.

The French government on Tuesday (24th May) announced increased security for this year's Tour de France.

STORYLINE:

Organisers for the Tour de France announced on Monday (27th June) that they are to use thermal cameras to detect motors on bikes.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

The International Cycling Union (UCI) said on Monday it will make between 3,000 and 4,000 bike checks for motorised doping at the Tour de France, which begins on Saturday (2nd July).

The world governing body has increased testing at major competitions, including the Tour, in recent years following rumour and speculation regarding motors hidden in frames.

And the UCI announced it was stepping up testing once more for "technological fraud" in the biggest race of the year, which begins at Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy this weekend and concludes in Paris on July 24.

A statement read: "For the forthcoming Tour de France, the UCI will have resources in place to conduct between 3,000 and 4,000 tests.

"An effective testing protocol is one which is unpredictable so the UCI confirms that it will deploy additional methods of detection at the Tour to both assess their performance and to ensure a varied testing protocol."

UCI president Brian Cookson said: "Since the beginning of the year, we are sending a clear message which is that there is literally nowhere to hide for anyone foolish enough to attempt to cheat in this way.

"A modified bike is extremely easy to detect with our scanners and we will continue to deploy them extensively throughout the Tour and the rest of the season."

Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche was in April, suspended for six years by the UCI in the first case of motorised doping in cycling.

Disciplinary proceedings began in March after the 19-year-old allegedly used a bike containing a motor at January's UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Belgium.

Van den Driessche was banned for violating UCI rules relating to technical fraud while she was also fined 20,000 Swiss francs and ordered to pay legal costs.

The UCI tested 2,000 bikes at May's Giro d'Italia and said its measures were welcomed by riders, teams and organisers, who are cooperating with testing.

"It is clear that all stakeholders in cycling have a common interest to demonstrate that this sort of cheating has no place in the sport," the UCI statement added.

Reaction after 2015 Tour de France route is unveiled in Paris on Wednesday (October 22nd).

The punishing hairpin climb to the Alpe d'Huez ski station high in the French Alps will provide the dramatic climax for the 2015 Tour de France on the last day, before cycling's showcase race sweeps into Paris for its traditional finish before cheering crowds on the Champs-Elysees.

The atypical 2015 route unveiled on Wednesday by Tour organisers also sees a drastically reduced emphasis on time-trialling, plenty of opportunities for sprinters to shine and potential traps that could trip up race favorites, including a return to tricky cobbled roads in northeast France.

The race starts on July 4th in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and ends 3,344 kilometres (2,078 miles) later in Paris on July 26th, going counter-clockwise around France.

Denmark's bid to host the 2018 Tour de France Grand Depart was launched in Paris on Monday (20th June).

Denmark is a country made for cyclists and now the country are looking to build on that reputation by launching a bid to host the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2018.

Their minister for Business and Growth, Troels Lund Poulsen, and the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, launched the official Danish Bid to host the Grand Depart in Paris on Monday.

Succesfully hosted by Yorkshire in England in 2014, the first stage of the Tour brings colour, excitement and a huge profile to the chosen location, something business leaders hope will have an impact not just on the Danish capital but right across the country.

They have the infrastructure and now the official bid also has support both from parliament and the regions, as well as citizens of Denmark.

World and Olympic champion Marianne Vos said on Tuesday (29th April) that women cyclists got a "big boost" when Tour de France organisers agreed to host a one-day race for them in Paris this year - but she's not stopping there.

The first "La Course by Le Tour de France" - a women's race - takes place on 27th July, just hours before their male counterparts riders end their three-week jaunt through Great Britain and France to the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Marianne Vos helped crack a glass ceiling in cycling last year.

She and other riders launched a petition seeking a women's version of the Tour.

After some initial grumbling, race organisers responded.

Vos has made promoting women's cycling a 'cause celebre', and calls herself a "marraine" - French for godmother - of La Course, which is planned to take place in future years.

The Dutch World and Olympic champion will be among the star riders in this year's field.

La Course will cover 90 kilometres (55 miles) and include 13 laps on the Champs-Elysees - with a likely sprint finish, race organisers announced on Tuesday in the French capital.

The winner will receive 22,500 Euros (around U.S. $31,000), the same sum awarded to men for a Tour stage win.

Cheered on by thousands of fans undeterred by the recent spate of violence across Europe, Chris Froome celebrated his third Tour de France title in four years.

All five mountain ranges of continental France will feature in next year's Tour de France, setting up a gruelling, three-week racing challenge that seems tailor-made for the climbing strengths of defending champion Chris Froome and his Colombian rival, Nairo Quintana.

In their quest to keep the 113-year-old race young, organisers have again unearthed fresh racing challenges from the geography of France, with new climbs and, on stage 18, an unprecedented mountain-top finish on the punishing Col d'Izoard high in the Alps - a rocky, hostile and lunar terrain that could be the final big battleground for the winner's check of 500,000 euros ($550,000).

Before that, on stage 12 in the Pyrenees, the Tour climbs to the Peyragudes ski station where parts of the James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" were filmed in 1997.

From its July 1 start in Duesseldorf, Germany, to the July 23 finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, the 3,516-kilometre (2,185-mile) route will wind over climbs in the Vosges, Jura, Massif Central, Pyrenees and Alps. Reaction after the route for the 2016 Tour de France was unveiled in Paris on Tuesday (20th October).

Chris Froome fancies his chances of defending the Tour de France title on a route that should suit his all-around riding skills.

Two individual time trials and 28 tough climbs will be on the 2016 Tour de France's 3,519-kilometre (2,186-mile) route, which was revealed in France on Tuesday.

Froome, who also won in 2013, is strong both on climbs and in individual time trials, making him an early favourite for 2016.

An ascent of Mont Ventoux in Provence on Bastille Day (14th July) will test the best climbers.

Froome was the stage winner when the Tour last scaled the Ventoux's barren, 1,909-metre (6,263-feet) peak in 2013 and he will be eyeing that stage for another victory.

The Mont-Saint-Michel, a Benedictine abbey perched on a rock off the Normandy coast, will provide a picture-postcard start for the race.

The first stage ends at Utah Beach, where Allied troops landed on D-Day in 1944.

The first taste of the mountains will come on stage five, in the Massif Central.

From there, there will be little respite on the next 15 stages before the last ride into Paris.

The first of the time trial on stage 13, a day after the Ventoux ascent, combines two short climbs, long flats and a tricky descent over 37 kilometres (23 miles).

Riders hoping to win time-trial gold the following month at the Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro will be able to use that tough course to gauge their form.

After the Pyrenees, where the Tour will dip into Spain and Andorra, the final placings will be decided in the Alps and neighbouring Switzerland before the finish in Paris on 24th of July.

Czech car manufacturer Skoda has been revealed as the new sponsor of the Tour de France green jersey, replacing long-term partner PMU.

The French betting company has been synonymous with the sprinters jersey for almost a quarter of a century but last November revealed it will cease its involvement with the three-week Tour.

Skoda is no stranger to cycling, let alone the Tour de France, having worked as an official partner of the race for the last ten years.

PMU has decided to move into sponsoring soccer, putting its name to the French Cup and backing one of the country's leading clubs, Paris St Germain.

At the launch of the new sponsorship deal in Paris on Monday (March 23), Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme was reluctant to answer questions about Lance Armstrong who plans to plans to ride part of the Tour de France route for charity a day before the official race.

But the disgraced cyclist got the backing of Ireland's Stephen Roche, the winner of the 1987 Tour, who said Armstrong had not killed anybody and had inspired a lot of very ill people.

Reaction following the announcement of the route for the 100th Tour de France made in Paris on Wednesday (24 October).

Wednesday's presentation in Paris of the 2013 route for the Tour de France was clouded by concerns about doping after Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles on Monday following a US probe.

On Wednesday, cycling teams called for an independent audit into the sport's fight against doping.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme, announcing the route, took a firm line and sought to move on.

"Doping is the enemy," he said. "The Tour will be stronger than doping."

The management committee of the UCI (International Cycling Union), cycling's world governing body, will meet on Friday to discuss whether Armstrong's titles and prize money will be re-distributed, following which the International Olympic Committee will make a decision on the bronze medal Armstrong won in Sydney in 2000.

Armstrong has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and refused to co-operate with the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) investigation.

Paris police opened fire on a car that tried to crash through barricades early on Sunday (26th July), before the 21st and final stage of the Tour de France.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Paris police officers opened fire on a car that tried to crash through barricades about eight hours before the final arrival of the Tour de France cycling race on Sunday, a police official said.

No officers were injured.

The car escaped with its two occupants apparently unharmed after coming under fire around 11 a.m. (0900 GMT; 5 a.m. EDT) in the Place de la Concorde, where the cyclists make their final triumphant rounds to conclude the race, said Luc Poignant, a spokesman with the SGP police union.

Police are hunting for the people in the car.

The final stage of the Tour de France is due to begin at 4:35 p.m. (1435 GMT; 10:35 a.m. EDT), leaving from Sevres, a town south-west of Paris.

The riders are then due to arrive in the French capital at around 5:30 p.m. (1530 GMT; 11:30 a.m. EDT) and do 10 laps around the Champs Elysees before finishing at Place de la Concorde at about 7 p.m. (1700 GMT; 1 p.m. EDT).

Hundreds of thousands of people gather in the Place de la Concorde and the Champs Elysees for the race's final stage with Chris Froome set to become the first Briton to win the race twice.

Bradley Wiggins became the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France by protecting the yellow jersey during Sunday's (July 22) final processional ride into Paris.

He also helped Sky teammate Mark Cavendish earn his fourth straight sprint victory on the Champs-Elysees.

British fans cheered and waved flags as Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France in Paris.

"It is not just today," said British supporter James How, "...it is the last two years, we have got the world champion, the Tour de France winner, hopefully the Olympic champion in a week, top of the world!"

Supporter Matthew Crisp said he can finally ride his bicycle proudly in England.

"I guess it does not make me look so stupid when I am wearing lycra on the streets," said Crisp, "I have been cycling for a couple of years, and I am just glad that we can finally bring it home."

Before going on a victory lap on the Champs Elysees, Wiggins climbed on a Team Sky Jaguar car.

Team Sky Sports Director Sean Yates called this victory "a dream come true."

Former Tour de France champion and cycling legend Lance Armstrong completed a two-day charity ride a day in advance of Tour de France stages 13 and 14 on Friday (July 17) - with the aim of raising awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Lance Armstrong, the disgraced and controversial cyclist, was back on two wheels in Les Vignes, France on Friday.

The American, stripped of his seven Tour victories for doping, set off early on Thursday morning (July 16) with former footballer Geoff Thomas, who is raising funds to fight Leukaemia.

The pair, and several other riders, were tackling the Tour route one day ahead of the actual race.

Armstrong rode two stages, starting with Thursday's trek from Venerque to Rodez and finishing with the Rodez to Mende stage on Friday.

Riding with amateurs and without hordes of fans cheering him on is a major step down from Armstrong's heyday from 1999-2005, when winning the Tour turned the cancer survivor into a superstar.

Armstrong's return to French cycling routes were received with mixed feelings both by the media and fans.
