STORYLINE:

With all three favourites taking a fall in the last few weeks, Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme says the outcome of the French classic race has never been so uncertain.

While four-time winner Chris Froome has announced he would not be in Brussels for the first stage on 6th July because of a broken leg, last year's Yellow Jersey Geraint Thomas confirmed his participation despite a crash in the Tour de Suisse.

Their Columbian teammate Egan Bernal also fell during training in early May.

Prudhomme also said on Wednesday that he doesn't like the use of real time data in the Tour de France.

The Frenchman said "Bluffing should exist or at least make a come back. At one point, a racing cyclist should be able to trick another into believing that he's not feeling that bad."

Defending champion Geraint Thomas and Mark Cavendish spoke about the route for the 2019 Tour de France after it was announced in Paris on Thursday (25th October).

Next year's Tour de France will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the showcase race's iconic yellow jersey.

With France emerging from the carnage of World War I, the Tour offered its beacon of hope to the war-ravaged nation.

In 1919, the race leader's yellow jersey — which has become cycling's most iconic symbol — was introduced.

"It came straight out of the trenches, born from the rubble of a wounded France," Tour race director Christian Prudhomme said Thursday, unveiling the route for the July 6-28 race.

Joining Prudhomme on stage were five-time Tour winners Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.

Only four riders, including Jacques Anquetil, have won five Tours; Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven titles for doping.

British rider Chris Froome will try to win his fifth title next year, but will have to depose his Team Sky teammate Geraint Thomas over the 3,460-kilometre (2,145-mile) race.

It features seven flat stages for sprinters, five hilly ones for all-rounders, seven mountain stages — five with summit finishes — one team time trial and one individual time trial.

The big climbs start in the Pyrenees before hitting the Alps.

The Tour has less of the Hors Categorie (Beyond Classification) climbs than before - those HC climbs are the most gruelling.

Instead, the race has more of the Category Two climbs — which are noticeably less difficult and favour attacking strategies.

Sky has won six of the past seven races, often controlling them in the mountains by easily repelling attacks.

This has given the team an aura of invincibility and the race a predictable tone.

With closer racing needed, the two time trials combine for a relatively low 54 kilometres, meaning specialists such as Froome have less chance to gain significant time advantages.

The race begins with a flat stage for sprinters around the city of Brussels and stays there the next day for the 27 kilometre team time trial.

After leaving Belgium, the Tour snakes through the Champagne and Lorraine regions.

Stage 4 for sprinters starts in Reims — the Champagne-producing city where 25 French kings were crowned in its cathedral.

With the race leaving the Alsace region, Stage 7 is the longest at 230 kilometres and made for sprinters.

The next day's stage is a hilly one, with several short but sharp climbs from Macon to Saint-Etienne.

The first rest day is July 16 in Albi in southern France, followed by a sprint stage before the Tour enters the high Pyrenees.

Stage 14 on July 20 features finishes with a climb up the Tourmalet pass, one of the most famed in Tour history.

Riders tackle three days of Alpine climbing on stages 18-20, featuring an ascent up the famed Galibier and imposing Iseran — standing 2,770 metres — and culminating with a relentless 33.4 kilometre trek up to the ski resort of Val Thorens.

After the weary peloton is flown towards Paris, the race ends the next day with its processional showcase stage on the Champs-Elysees.

Small groups of Colombians celebrated in Paris on Sunday after the Tour de France victory of one of their own - 22-year-old Egan Bernal.

Bernal is South America's first winner of cycling's greatest race.

Amid the Parisians on the Champs Elysees and around the Arc de Triomphe, pockets of Colombians could be seen waving their flag jubilantly.

The youngest champion of the post-World War II era, the slightly built Colombian with a killer instinct on the road proved to be the strongest of the 176 strong men who roared off from the start in Brussels, Belgium, on July 6 on their 3,366-kilometre (2,092-mile) odyssey that delivered the most absorbing, drama-packed Tour in decades and a new cycling superstar in the making: Bernal.

Riding a yellow bike, and cheered by Colombian fans who were partying even before he rattled up the cobblestones of the famous avenue,

Bernal crossed the line with his teammate Geraint Thomas, the 2018 champion who this year finished second.

On the second rest day of the 2015 Tour de France on Tuesday (21 July), Team Sky released data to illustrate the riding power of race leader Chris Froome.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Chris Froome's team has released data about his riding power in an effort to quell new speculation about doping at the Tour de France.

At a news conference on Tuesday on the Tour's second rest day, Sky team performance analyst Tim Kerrison read figures including Froome's power output, cadence and heart rate on a final climb in Stage 10, which he won, in the Pyrenees.

Sky manager Dave Brailsford said the team decided to release the figures after an expert on France's state broadcaster covering the race had aired what he called "wildly wrong" data about Froome's performances.

Brailsford added that he hoped the release of the data would "put to bed ... some of the numbers that they came up with."

Team Ineos rider Geraint Thomas said on Monday's rest day that he is "itching to go" ahead of the final week of racing at the 2019 Tour de France.

Second-placed Thomas gained 27 seconds on yellow jersey holder Julian Alaphilippe on Sunday's stage 15, as a late attack saw him distance the Frenchman towards the Prat d'Albis summit finish.

Three big mountain days are still left to race before the Tour's traditional conclusion in Paris, and Thomas will be intent on making further inroads into Alaphilippe's lead, which stands at one minute and 35 seconds.

On Saturday, the Welshman had lost crucial time on the Col du Tourmalet, but his response on Sunday kept him in contention as he bids to retain the Tour de France title.

Tuesday's 177 kilometre relatively flat stage 16 in Nimes is likely to see a bunch sprint finish.

Reigning Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas revealed to SNTV on Tuesday that his sole focus for 2019 is to successfully defend the yellow jersey.

Thomas won the 2018 Tour de France by almost two minutes after a battle against his team-mate and four-time champion Chris Froome, who finished third.

The 32 year-old Welshman was speaking ahead of Wednesday's Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in southern Spain and admitted he would never have been in contention for a Tour de France victory in the "dark ages" when doping was rife in the sport.

Last year, Thomas vented his frustration at Team Sky prioritising Froome during the Tour de France, but said they now have a strong relationship.

Thomas also said he is focused on racing and is not overly concerned by Sky's withdrawal of its sponsorship of the team at the end of 2019.

Sky will end its involvement in cycling in 2019 after more than a decade of backing.

The decision will bring to a conclusion Sky's ownership and sponsorship of Team Sky, which will continue to race if a new backer is secured by 2020.

The team will compete as Team Sky for the last time during the 2019 road racing season.

Team Sky have won 322 races including eight Grand Tours, 52 other stage races and 25 one-day races after starting their sponsorship in 2010.

Two years later Sir Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France, with Chris Froome claiming the first of his four Tour titles in 2013.

In the summer Geraint Thomas became the third Team Sky rider - as well as the third Briton - to win the Tour de France, the team's sixth success at the race in seven years.

UCI President Pat McQuaid told SNTV on Monday (22nd October) that he believes the Lance Armstrong scandal will "become history very quickly" as he insists the sport is much cleaner now.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

International Cycling Union (UCI) President Pat McQuaid took part in a news conference in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday in the wake of the Lance Armstrong doping controversy.

McQuaid confirmed that Armstrong is to be stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from the sport for life following a report from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that accused him of leading a massive doping program on his teams.

McQuaid also announced that the federation accepted the USADA's report on Armstrong and would not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The decision clears the way for Tour de France organisers to officially remove Armstrong's name from the record books, erasing his consecutive victories from 1999-2005.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme has said his organisation would go along with whatever cycling's governing body decides and will have no official winners for those years.

The USADA had said that Armstrong should be banned and stripped of his Tour titles for "the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" within his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams. He also loses all race results achieved since August 1998.

The USADA report said Armstrong and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The report included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong, including that he pressured them to take banned drugs.

Armstrong denies doping, saying he passed hundreds of drug tests. But he chose not to fight USADA in one of the agency's arbitration hearings, arguing the process was biased against him. USADA's report, released earlier this month, was aimed at showing why the agency ordered the sanctions against him.

Former Armstrong team director Johan Bruyneel is also facing doping charges, but he is challenging the USADA case in arbitration.

While drug use allegations have followed the 41-year-old Armstrong throughout much of his career, the USADA report has badly damaged his reputation. Longtime sponsors Nike, Trek Bicycles and Anheuser-Busch have dropped him, as have other companies, and Armstrong also stepped down last week as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer awareness charity he founded 15 years ago after surviving testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain.

Armstrong's astonishing return from life-threatening illness to the summit of cycling offered an inspirational story that transcended the sport.

However, his downfall has ended "one of the most sordid chapters in sports history," USADA said in its report published two weeks ago.

If Armstrong's Tour victories are not reassigned there would be a hole in the record books, marking a shift from how organisers treated similar cases in the past.

When Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 Tour victory for a doping violation, organisers awarded the title to Andy Schleck. In 2006, Oscar Pereiro was awarded the victory after the doping disqualification of American rider Floyd Landis.

The USADA also thinks the Tour titles should not be given to other riders who finished on the podium, such was the level of doping during Armstrong's era.

The agency said 20 of the 21 riders on the podium in the Tour from 1999 through 2005 have been "directly tied to likely doping through admissions, sanctions, public investigations" or other means. It added that of the 45 riders on the podium between 1996 and 2010, 36 were by cyclists "similarly tainted by doping."

The world's most famous cyclist could still face further sports sanctions and legal challenges. Armstrong could lose his 2000 Olympic time-trial bronze medal and may be targeted with civil lawsuits from ex-sponsors or even the U.S. government.

McQuaid said the UCI's board will meet on Friday (October 26) to discuss the OIympic issue and whether to update other race results taking account of Armstrong's disqualifications.

Britain's richest man has bought the Team Sky cycling team, which will be renamed Team Ineos.

Jim Ratcliffe, the chairman of chemicals giant Ineos, is reported by the Sunday Times rich list as being worth 21 billion U.S. dollars (18.5 million euros).

Ineos pledged in a statement on Tuesday to honour all "existing commitments to riders, staff and partners."

The team will officially launch at the Tour de Yorkshire in May.

Sky's long-time team principal Dave Brailsford welcomed the move, saying "it represents a huge vote of confidence in our future."

Sky have won six of the past seven Tour de France races, with Chris Froome winning four times and Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas once each.

British broadcaster Sky announced its withdrawal from the sport last December following the European pay TV giant's takeover by American company Comcast.

The British men's cycling pursuit team retained the Olympic gold medal on Friday (August 3rd), shattering the world record it had set the previous day; as the quartet of Edward Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh finished in three minutes, 51.659 seconds - lowering the mark of 3:52.499 they set during the qualifying round by nearly a second, carried along by a partisan crowd that included Bradley Wiggins, the Tour de France champion and former team-mate, who won the Olympic time trial gold medal on Wednesday at Hampton Court Palace.

What a summer for British cycling?

Team GB pedallers are flying along with a wall of noise after claiming three Olympic titles from four events at the London 2012 Velodrome at the Olympic Park.

Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Peter Kennaugh and Steven Burke successfully defended Britain's four-kilometre team pursuit title on a night in the English capital when Victoria Pendleton won keirin gold and the women's team pursuit squad qualified fastest for the day three's knockout rounds.

The wave of momentum has not stopped after Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France and Olympic time-trial gold, as part of a haul of three medals on the road in the first week of London 2012.

The Australian team of Jack Bobridge, Glenn O'Shea, Rohan Dennis and Michael Hepburn finished in 3:54.581 to win the silver medal, and New Zealand beat Russia for the bronze - but once again the Brits dominated in the saddle.

The first team to defend the Olympic team pursuit title since West Germany in 1976, Britain was carried along by a partisan crowd that included Wiggins, the Tour de France champion who won the Olympic

time trial gold medal on Wednesday at Hampton Court Palace.

Wiggins was roaring his approval with the rest of the 6,000 fans jammed into the velodrome, and for good reason: he was part of the British pursuit team that won gold in Beijing.

The team pursuit, in which teams of four race over four kilometers in an aerodynamic formation, started on Thursday, when the British team established a world record.

The time was nearly three seconds faster than Australia - and more than five seconds better than New Zealand - and an ecstatic Thomas and Burke paid tribute to Wiggins and those fans afterwards as they proudly displayed yet more gold for as Team GB surged up the overall medals table.

Simon Yates spoke of his joy and relief shortly after winning the 2018 La Vuelta crown on Sunday (16th September), his first Grand Tour success - it's the first time that British riders have won all three Grand Tour events in the same year.

Yates's win means that all three Grand Tours - Vuelta, Giro D'Italia and Tour de France - have been won by British riders this year, following Chris Froome's success in the Giro and Geraint Thomas' triumph in the Tour.

His victory in Spain is all the more sweet after he imploded when leading the Giro, tumbling in one stage from first to 17th in the General Classification.

The final Vuelta stage came down to a sprint in the heart of Madrid, won by Quick-Step's Elia Viviani ahead of world champion Peter Sagan, riding for Bora-Hansgrohe.

The British Olympic Association announced its squad for the 2012 Olympic Games at the National Cycling centre in Manchester on Wednesday (13th June)

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

The National Cycling Centre in Manchester was the venue for the official announcement of the British cycling squad for the London Olympic Games on Wednesday (13th June).

The BOA has named 18 cyclists, in three different disciplines, Track Cycling, BMX and Mountain Biking.

They also announced the provisional squads for the road cycling events.

Much interest surrounds the naming of both Sir Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny in the track team.

The two men are vying for one place in the individual sprint, and Sporting Director Dave Brailsford confirmed he would leave the final selection as late as possible.

Hoy, who is a four time Olympic Champion, said he would accept the situation, and work hard to get the place.

Brailsford goes into his third games as Sporting Director under pressure to deliver more medals for Britain's successful cycling team.

At Beijing in 2008, they won eight golds from a possible 18, and Brailsford admits their is extra pressure in a home Olympic Games.

David Millar has been named as one of the eight cyclists in the provisional men's road squad, to be reduced to five before the Games.

The experienced Scotsman came into contention when the World Anti-Doping Agency overturned the BOA's life Olympic ban imposed on Millar for drugs offences.

Brailsford confirmed he selected Millar purely on cycling grounds, and believed he would be welcomed into the team.

Shanaze Reid is one of Great Britain's medal hopes in the BMX.

Reid suffered disappointment in Beijing four years ago, when she crashed when seemingly on the way to winning gold, eventually taking silver.

She says she has put the experience behind her, and hopes to go one better in London.

Geraint Thomas is another big medal hope, the Welshman is expected to be part of the team pursuit squad hoping the defend the title they won in Beijing.

Thomas was part of the quartet whch set a new world record winning the world title in April, beating their great rivals Australia in front of their own fans in Melbourne.

He expects the continued rivalry between Great Britain and Australia to be a highlight of the London Games.

Thomas has decided to focus on track cycling in the build-up to the Games, electing not to take part in the Tour de France.

He gave his reaction to Andy Schleck's decision to putt out through injury, saying it will be a big help for Bradley Wiggins and his Team Sky team mates.
