JAMES TAYLOR SAYS VOTERS 'SENT CLEAR MESSAGE' OF DISPLEASURE WITH TRUMP ADMINISTRATION

At a Wednesday (7 NOVEMBER) soiree honoring recording artist Joni Mitchell, celebrity attendees shared their thoughts on the results of the Mid-terms.

Aactress and producer Rita Wilson said she was "hoping for a bigger blue wave."

"But I'll take what was there, because I think change was made, and I think it's important that that got done. Lots of women, for the first time, over a hundred (in the House). I think that's really important. And I feel a little bit like I can breathe a bit more tonight. (Laughs.)"

Recording artist James Taylor said he was "glad that we've managed to see some change, that there's some prospect of putting the brakes on this sort of runaway, kind of rogue government in Washington that, really, has been very alarming to a lot of us."

"And I think the nation's sent a clear message that they want some checks on this administration. And that a Republican congress, executive and Supreme Court is maybe not such a good thing. So, yes, I'm pleased. I do wish that we'd managed to do more. I supported a number of candidates and have skin in the game. So, I also just have a very powerful investment in what I feel my country is. I'm an unapologetic supporter of Barack Obama. And I miss him. And it's alarming for me to see the Republicans in Washington dismantling and disassembling all the good work he tried to do. So, you know, it's good to see there be some movement and in the direction of sanity. But, you know, it remains to be seen what can be done."

Actress Rosanna Arquette said she watched the returns with a group of high-profiled activists, including former California senator Barbara Boxer, and actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

"We all were there together, watching the outcome and, you know, we had some disappointments," Arquette reported. "We're still counting, because they're still counting in Florida -- and (Georgia gubernatorial candidate) Stacey Abrams: We'll see what happens there, please God. But women, we've got women in Congress. And we've got we have the House and we're, today more than ever, thank God we do, because we see the dictatorship coming, right upon us. You know, it started with the freedom of the press. Rights being taken away. (CNN reporter) Jim Acosta has been locked out of the White House tonight. Not OK."

English comedy star, Eric Idle (Monty Python) said he's on "the orange-monster fast."

"And I try and teach people: When you have a mad person who's trying to interest you every day in whatever he has to say, the important thing is to look the other way. That's what I do. Because I am not American, so I don't get to vote. So, as I explain in my book, 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,' available now, I have a whole passage, which I do a riff on why I'm not American. It's about tax-avoiding greedy bastards like this moron who drive me nuts. And I think everybody kind of gets a bit crazy."

Wednesday also saw Trump fire U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions," which Tom Hanks described as "Just one more crack in the vessel."

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has spoken out against the practice of honour killing.

Speaking in Youngstown, Ohio on Monday Trump said if he was elected President his administration "will be a friend to all moderate Muslim reformers in the Middle East, and will amplify their voices.''

Trump cited the case of a prominent Pakistani social media star who was recently strangled to death by her brother for dishonouring the family.

Pakistan reports nearly 1,000 so-called "honour killings" every year, Trump said, adding that honour killing "is a practice that has reached our own shores."

US Vice President-elect Mike Pence and the family of President-elect Donald Trump arrived at the US Capitol on Friday morning ahead of the new administration's inauguration.

President Donald Trump said Thursday he's considering commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of corruption, and pardoning lifestyle entrepreneur Martha Stewart, who served a stint in federal prison after being convicted of charges related to a stock sale.

The president's use of pardons is raising questions about whether he is doing so to send a message to allies who could face prosecution in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

"It's undeniable that with the least number of these presidential pardons people have read political motivation into these, said AP Reporter Jill Colvin.

"For instance when he decided to pardon Scooter Libby who was a former Vice President Dick Cheney's one of his top aides. Many people saw that as really a reaction to the Mueller investigation," she said.

Trump later shared his thoughts on Blagojevich and Stewart with the reporters accompanying him on Air Force One.

Both had connections to Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" reality television show: Blagojevich was a contestant in 2010 and Stewart hosted the 2005 spinoff series, "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart."

Blagojevich was convicted on numerous counts of corruption, including for trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by Obama and for shaking down a children's hospital.

As governor, he had the right to name someone to fill the Senate vacancy, but he was caught on FBI wiretaps discussing ways to make money off it. He began serving a 14-year prison sentence in 2012 and is scheduled for release in 2024.

The Supreme Court has twice turned down appeals from Blagojevich, most recently in April. That appeal turned in part on the length of Blagojevich's prison term. Trump's Justice Department urged the court to reject the appeal.

Stewart was convicted in 2004 of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she unloaded stock just before the price plummeted. She served five months in prison. Her representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The federal prosecutor who oversaw Stewart's case in New York was James Comey, one of Trump's principal antagonists and the man he fired as FBI director last year. The prosecutor who led the case against Blagojevich in Chicago was Patrick Fitzgerald, a Comey friend who is also his lawyer. Fitzgerald was also the special counsel leading the case against I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the Bush administration official pardoned by Trump last month.

Hours earlier, Trump said on Twitter that he will pardon conservative commentator and Obama critic Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud. The White House announced later Thursday that the pardon had been granted.

Watchdog groups criticized D'Souza's pardon, saying it signaled the president's contempt for the rule of law.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday continued to air his grievances against news media, calling it "the fake, fake disgusting news".

Trump told a rally crowd in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania that the media refuses to give him credit for a long list of accomplishments, including his summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

He described how he told his wife about how he "just stopped missiles from being launched every two seconds" and thought the media was "finally going to treat me so good", but didn't.

He also mocked the press for saying he wasn't tough enough on Putin.

With a bleep on live television and double fists raised in the air, Robert De Niro got the theater crowd on its feet at the Tony Awards with a rousing political introduction of his old friend Bruce Springsteen that was focused squarely elsewhere: on President Donald Trump.

De Niro, a staunch Trump opponent, dropped a couple of F-bombs heard clearly by the Radio City Music crowd Sunday night (10 JUNE 2018). The CBS television audience heard dead silence instead before he raised his arms -- twice -- and earned a standing ovation.

The legendary actor urged the audience to vote in November and lauded Springsteen for his own political commitment before the singer sat at a piano for a moving performance based on his "Springsteen on Broadway" show that had him singing his classic hit, "My Hometown."

De Niro said of Springsteen: "Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else and even more importantly in these perilous times, you rock the vote, always fighting for, in your own words, truth, transparency and integrity in government. Boy, do we need that now."

The anti-Trump sentiment swept backstage as playwright Tony Kushner and others from "Angels in America" spoke to reporters about its three big wins: best play revival and acting trophies for Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane.

"I agree," Kushner said when asked about the De Niro moment, dropping an F-bomb of his own in relation to the president.

"I can't believe De Niro did that," Kushner said. "Good for him. I mean, it's Robert De Niro. Who's gonna argue with him."

Kushner went even further, calling Trump's presidency "the Hitler mistake" that put a "borderline psychotic narcissist in the White House."

The line from the poem 'What kind of times are these when to talk about trees is almost a crime because it implies silence about so many atrocities.' That's the world we're living in now but I really believe we're going to start the process of healing by getting control of congress and having a functional, at least 1/2 of a functioning congress again and I think after that the days of this entirely criminal and I think treasonous administration are numbered. So, I can't believe De Niro did that. Good for him. I mean, he's Robert De Niro. Who's gonna argue with him? I agree. (Expletive) Trump."

JUSTIN TRUDEAU MEETS 'COME FROM AWAY' CAST MEMBERS AFTER THE SHOW

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, met with the cast and crew of Broadway musical "Come from Away" after the show Wednesday evening (15 MARCH 2017).

Trudeau - along with first daughter Ivanka Trump as a guest - welcomed the new musical that celebrates Canadian compassion and openness to international travelers following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Some 120 ambassadors from around the world also attended the show at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

The musical is set in the small Newfoundland town of Gander, which opened its arms and homes to some 7,000 airline passengers diverted there when the U.S. government shut down its airspace. In a matter of a few hours, the town was overwhelmed by 38 planeloads of travelers from dozens of countries and religions, yet locals went to work in their kitchens and cleaned up spare rooms.

The show got a standing ovation, including from Trump, who sat near Trudeau, his wife and U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley. Also in attendance was Jean Chretien, a former Canadian prime minister, and the mayor of Gander. Trump was seen clapping along happily as the band played at the curtain call.

The actors did not make any changes to the script or acknowledge the special audience.

In the show, a cast of a dozen play both residents and marooned passengers, telling true stories of generosity, compassion and acceptance, while fear and suspicion reigned in America. The show arrives just as a debate over immigration and open borders has reignited following the Trump administration's push for a ban on travelers from six predominantly Muslim nations.

Canadian husband-and-wife writing team Irene Sankoff and David Hein wrote the book, music and lyrics, and it was directed by Christopher Ashley, the artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse.
