STORYLINE:

Toyota's profit in the January-March quarter climbed nine-percent as the automaker marked its seventh straight fiscal year of record sales amid robust demand for its Corolla, Camry and Lexus models.

Toyota Motor Corporation, which beat General Motors (GM) in worldwide vehicle production and sales in the first quarter for the first time ever, reported a quarterly group profit of 440.1 (b) billion yen (3.67 (b) billion US dollars) from 404 (b) billion yen the same period the previous year.

Toyota's sales are surging as soaring gas prices boost the appeal of its models, which are reputed worldwide for fuel-efficiency, including gas-and-electric hybrids like the Prius.

Analysts say Toyota is growing so quickly it's just a matter of time before it overtakes problem-laden General Motors Corp. of the US to become the world's number-one automaker, a title that technically hinges on annual worldwide vehicle production.

Toyota's sales in the fiscal fourth quarter rose ten-percent to 6.3 (t) trillion yen (52.5 (b) billion US dollars) from 5.75 (t) trillion yen the previous year.

Detroit-based GM, the world's largest automaker the last 76 years, is seeing its US market share shrink, and has announced a restructuring plan to stem billions in losses.

Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe was typically understated when asked about the prospects of beating GM.

"Rather than think about other companies, I feel that we must do our utmost to satisfy customers around the world," he said.

"There is plenty left for us to do," he added.

He said his company aims to boost sales in "every region" around the world, while acknowledging the auto industry remains tough, with many obstacles.

"We see them as opportunities, and we will strive to continue to achieve growth," he told reporters at a Tokyo hotel.

Toyota sold 2.35 (m) million vehicles worldwide in the January-March period, surpassing the 2.266 (m) million vehicles GM sold in the quarter.

Earlier this month, GM reported a 62 (m) million US dollars profit in the first three months of the year for a second consecutive quarter of black ink.

It lost 10.4 (b) billion US dollars in 2005 but underwent massive restructuring and trimmed its losses to two (b) billion US dollars in 2006.

Carmakers have unveiled a range of new models and concept cars at the Shanghai auto show.

Foreign and Chinese brands are vying for a slice of the largest auto market in the world.

STORYLINE:

It's a car lovers paradise in Shanghai.

Dozens of vehicles are on display at the motor show - from luxury brands like Lamborghini and Ferrari to auto giants like Toyota, BMW and Ford.

There were also plenty of new models from Chinese domestic brands like Haval.

The Shanghai auto show has become an increasingly important event in the car industry's calendar since China overtook the US as the largest auto market in the world in 2009.

However, the abrupt deceleration in China's economy has dragged down auto sales growth and prompted buyers to shift to lower-priced models.

Growth slowed to 7 percent in the first three months of this year, its lowest quarterly expansion since the aftermath of the 2008 global crisis.

That's still higher than the low single-digit growth forecast for the United States and Europe this year, but well below China's peak of 14.2 percent in 2007.

Despite slowing growth, international car makers, including Ford, are increasing their investments in China to enhance their future market position.

Ford also used the Shanghai show for the global debut of its latest Taurus.

Ford says it is acquiring a Chinese auto factory to expand its capacity to produce Ford-branded passenger cars, beginning in the second half of next year.

Ford's President and CEO, Mark Fields says: "It's clear that the market is off the double-digit growth rate as we have been seen in the last couple of years, but still it is 7% which is the consensus growth of this year. Jaguar brings its all-new XF with aluminium-intensive architecture and features such as a virtual instrument cluster, laser head-up display and the InControl Touch Pro premium infotainment system.

Bob Grace, Jaguar's Regional President of Greater China, says the market is changing fast.

"Two or three years ago you would said this is a market where the majority of our customers sat in the back of a car, there is definitely a shift that we can see here today where people really start to enjoy the front of driving of a vehicle. And the technology that's in this car - the combination of the light-weight technology of the aluminium architecture together with a power train gives you an absolutely, thrilling driving experience. Vehicle sales in China reached 23.49 million last year, well ahead of the United States, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

However, the slowdown in growth is shaking up the car market, according to China-based auto analyst, Yale Zhang.

"We do see some premium sectors are impacted a little bit. The economy slowing down will result in some kind of slowing down of the premium segments. We see, like BMW, actually started decreasing a little bit, and Audi and Mercedes they grow much slower than previous years. So, I think that is a sign of the economy issues."

One area that has defied the trend is environmentally friendly new-energy cars. Sales rose in the first quarter of this year.

Foreign car makers are now looking to capitalise on this potential market in China and many displayed their new-energy products to the auto show.

BMW unveiled its newest X5 xDrive 40e, a plug-in hybrid version based on its popular SUV.

"We think new energy vehicles have a very very strong position for the future in this market place. The government is very clear that they are going to reduce the CO2 of most of the vehicles that are coming into the market in the years ahead. And of course people still want to have the flexibility that they've always desired in the past, so having our first plug-in hybrid technology from the i8 and available in the market place in the later part of this year and over time we will bring in plug-in hybrids across the whole range of the BMW products from the 3 series to the 5 series and to the 7 series," says Ian Roberston, BMW's senior executive in charge of Sales and Marketing.

Chinese auto brands, pressed by foreign competition, are enjoying a rebound, particularly in the SUV sector.

Local competitors have spent heavily to roll out new models.

Brands including SUV producer Great Wall Motor and Geely Holding, owner of Sweden's Volvo Cars, reported first-quarter sales gains of up to 70 percent.

That helped to boost the market share of Chinese automakers so far this year to 43 percent from last year's 38 percent, according to LMC Automotive.

Great Wall debuted the H6 Coupe and showed the H8 SUV under its Haval brand. The popularity of Great Wall's SUVs have helped transform it into one of China's most successful auto brands. The company says it hopes to sell 10,000 units a month of both of its new vehicles.

Analyst, Yale Zhang says: "This two or three years they launched a lot of SUV models, overwhelming, basically a lot more than the overseas car makers. The revived momentum for Chinese automakers adds to pressure on global brands that see China's crowded market as their future at a time when sales growth is slow in the United States and stalled in Europe.

"I mean if we purely look at the numbers of the size of segment where we are competing, the dynamics are very tough, the markets are not really growing at the pace that they used to grow in the past, there is a lot of price wars going on, it's quite aggressive. But I think because we are still a fairly niche player, and because we have a lot of new models coming to the market, we are fairly isolated from this market dynamic for this year. So the business for us is still quite good."

For automakers, China is a key market for hybrid cars, as the government encourages the development of new energy vehicles to cut air pollution and raise fuel efficiency.

An array of luxury and hybrid cars are on show at the Guangzhou Motor Show.

STORYLINE

While a flurry of new car models are being paraded this week at auto shows in Los Angeles and Tokyo, Toyota's luxury brand Lexus is using the week's other big auto show in China to unveil the latest version of its CT 200h.

This four door hatchback hybrid is positioned as a sporty luxury compact. The 2014 model is the first major update since it was launched in China in 2011.

Changes are mostly cosmetic to give the car a fresher look.

Lexus says hybrids account for nearly 30 percent of sales in China, making it the company's third biggest hybrid market worldwide.

Lexus says it chose to launch the car at the Guangzhou show in southern China as a sign of its commitment to the country, which is the world's biggest auto market and the second biggest for the company.

The automaker says it would hold "more and more" global premiers in China, where auto sales grew 7.1 percent last year to 15.5 million vehicles.

The Japanese brand isn't the only one. American brands such as Ford, Buick and Chevrolet have all made their presence known at the show this year, while giving the simultaneously ongoing Tokyo auto show a miss.

Buick showcased a futuristic looking Buick Riviera concept car which runs on electricity, and boasts a wireless sensor recharge panel.

Chevrolet went for a more nostalgic route and showcased a pale-blue classic Chevrolet Malibu from 1965.

Both Buick and Chevrolet are owned under local joint venture Shanghai General Motors.

The new Ford EcoSport, is a compact SUV for developing markets.

Marin Burela, president of Ford's local joint venture says that the company was growing in an accelerated rate in China, with its market share doubling from just 2% in the last 18-month period.

He says the trust the Chinese have for the American brand was the reason behind the aggressive expansion plan, which saw Ford introducing five new cars to the country the past year, as well as its goal to build its fifth car factory in eastern China by 2015.

"It's all about sustainability, it's about green, it's about safe, it's about having great quality cars and it's about having great technologies, smart technologies," he says.

Recent announcements by the central government to slash quota for new car sales in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou had little effect on carmakers.

The move, aimed to reduce pollution and congestion levels, would see Beijing restrict license plate issuance to 150,000, down from 240,000.

The government also plans to allot a higher proportion of license plates to buyers of new-energy vehicles, a move that Ford found opportunistic.

Other carmakers, such as long-established German brand Volkswagen, felt that the new policy would have little impact on its already dominating market.

Wei Mingsoh, executive vice president of Volkswagen Group China, says the potential buyers would more likely go with a more established brand, as people would not consider changing cars so frequently once the policy sets in.

Volkswagen present the XL1 a plug-in diesel hybrid at the show.

For luxury brands, the niche market mean that government policies would have little effect on their sales, although shifting preferences meant that the market on its own was not growing at the pace it was just a few years ago.

China is the world's biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold and sales growth still is stronger than in Western markets despite decelerating over the past year.

Passenger vehicle sales for the first nine months of 2013 totalled 12.8 million vehicles, up 7.5 percent from the same period last year. Total vehicle sales rose 12.7 percent to 15.8 million in the first three quarter according to China Association of Auto Manufacturers.

China's domestic automakers, struggling to hold market share against global rivals, saw September sales rise just 1.8 percent over last year to 276,200 vehicles.

The 11th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition runs from November 21 - 30, 2013.
