Auto giants Toyota and BMW said on Thursday they had agreed to collaborate on research for cleaner, next-generation batteries, underlining the growing push in the industry for green technology.

The agreement brings together Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's No. 1 carmaker and a leader in petrol-electric hybrids, and BMW AG of Germany, a European maker that has a strong luxury brand image in both Japan and Europe.

"In future, the BMW group, and Toyota Motor Corporation, will work together in what is designed to be a long term technological partnership," Klaus Draeger, Member of BMW AG, development board of management said.

The two automakers will also work on improving lithium-ion battery technology, typically used in batteries for electronic gadgets and relatively new to autos.

Toyota has struggled to find a good lithium-ion battery for its green cars and is using technology from Japanese electronics maker Sanyo Electric Co. in its latest plug-in hybrid, for which Toyota has recently started taking orders.

Toyota had worked with Panasonic Corp. on a battery before the electronics maker acquired Sanyo, partly to get better lithium-ion technology.

"And we at Toyota are exploring possibilities across a full range of technologies. The battery technology that we will develop with BMW will be the core technology for both reducing and replacing petroleum fuel," Toyota Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada told reporters at a Tokyo news conference.

Toyota and BMW have been engaged in extended discussions on technology and plan to collaborate on other medium-term and long-term projects, he said.

BMW will also begin supplying "clean" diesel engines to Toyota in 2014 for models for the European market.

Diesel engines for passenger cars are huge in Europe but have yet to take off in the U.S. or Japan, the two major markets where Toyota is strong.

Toyota does not have enough clean diesel engines for its European offerings.

Under their agreement, BMW is supplying 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre fuel-efficient diesel engines for Toyota.

They declined to give details on models.

The announcement was timed with the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public on Saturday.

Toyota said it was recalling about 437-thousand Prius and other hybrid vehicles worldwide to fix brake problems, the latest in a string of embarrassing safety lapses at the world''s largest automaker.

"We feel ashamed but now I am taking a lead and ask you to wait for just a little longer," President Akio Toyoda said at a news conference on Tuesday in Tokyo, after a meeting with Japanese Transport Minister Seiji Maehara.

With the Prius announcement, the number of vehicles recalled globally by Toyota Motor Corporation has ballooned to 8.5 (m) million, for the brake problems, and also for faulty acceleration pedals that are slow to return to the idle position, and for floor mats which can trap acceleration pedals.

The 2010 Prius wasn''t part of the earlier recalls.

There have been about 200 complaints in Japan and the US about a delay when the brakes in the Prius were pressed in cold conditions and on some bumpy roads.

The delay doesn''t indicate a brake failure.

The company says the problem can be fixed in 40 minutes with new software that oversees the controls of the antilock brakes.

Toyota officials went to Japan''s Transport Ministry earlier on Tuesday to formally notify officials that the company was recalling the 2010 Prius gas-electric hybrid - the world''s top-selling hybrid car.

Toyoda, the president, has been criticised for being largely invisible during the two weeks after the company announced on January 21 the acceleration pedal recall in the US, Europe and China.

He apologised at his first public press conference last Friday, and again on Tuesday, but was criticised by the Japanese media for failing to outline concrete steps to tackle the safety crisis and to reassure customers around the world.

He said he planned to go to the US soon to talk with American Toyota workers and dealers.

Analysts said fears of an even bigger consumer backlash had prodded Toyota into recalling the Prius.

The Japanese Transport Minister Seiji Maehara criticised Toyota for reacting too slowly, and said he was meeting US Ambassador to Japan, John Roos, on Wednesday to exchange views about Toyota''s recalls and make sure US-Japan relations remained on good terms.

"We must take care that it doesn''t turn into a diplomatic problem," Seiji Maehara told reporters after his meeting with Toyoda.

"Various countries have to carefully consider their approach," he said.

The automaker is also recalling two other hybrid models in Japan, the Lexus HS250h sedan, sold in the US and Japan, and the Sai, which is sold only in Japan.

The 223-thousand cars being recalled in Japan include nearly 200-thousand Priuses sold from April last year until Monday, according to papers the automaker filed with the ministry. The Prius is Japan''s top-selling car.

In the US, Toyota will recall 133-thousand Prius cars and 14,500 Lexus HS250h vehicles.

Nearly 53-thousand Priuses are also being recalled in Europe.

Toyota is suspending production of the Sai and Lexus HS250h in Japan until the updated software for those models is ready.

If drivers experience a delayed reaction when depressing the brakes in any of these models, they should keep pressing, according to Toyota and the transport ministry.

The Prius repairs will start in Japan on Wednesday.

US owners will start receiving letters about the recall next week.

US safety officials have launched an investigation into problems with the brakes.

Toyota Motor Corp have unveiled a new plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Plug-in hybrids, including Toyota's, generally have batteries that power an electric motor, with an internal combustion engine for use when the batteries run low.

The batteries can be recharged by plugging them into a standard wall outlet.

The plug-ins run longer on electricity, especially for shorter distances, than the more common hybrids on the roads such as Toyota's Prius.

STORYLINE:

The Toyota Plug-in HV is a hybrid car that you can power up at home.

The latest eco-car unveiled by Toyota runs on the same nickel metal hydride battery as the Toyota Prius and has a cruising range of 8 miles (13 kilometres) on electricity, which is further than similar cars on the market like the Prius.

Toyota is the first manufacturer to receive government approval to conduct tests for a plug-in hybrid on Japanese public roads.

Yoshikazu Tanaka, Chief Engineer at Toyota says this car may change the way people fuel their vehicles.

So far mass production of plug-ins is so far being held back by costs and battery technology that limit the vehicles' range.

Manufacturers are racing to bring the technology to market as consumers seek alternatives to traditional engines and high petrol prices.

Although most automakers are working on hybrids, Toyota has the advantage of 10 years of experience in selling the technology, and 10 years of feedback from drivers on which to base improvements, rather than relying on information from labs.

Toyota has placed a large emphasis on hybrid technology:

It offers several hybrid models besides the Prius, including the hybrid Camry and hybrid Lexus models.

It has set a target of selling a million hybrids a year sometime after 2010.

The more common hybrids such as the Prius switch between an electric motor and petrol engine to deliver better mileage.

They don't need to be plugged in to recharge because they recharge the motor as they run, converting energy from the wheels and braking.

Toyota said in June 2007 that its cumulative sales of hybrids passed 1 million vehicles since it began selling the Prius a decade ago.

Details of its plug-in hybrid tests for the U.S. and Europe are still undecided.

General Motors is developing the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, and says it hopes its plug-ins can reach showrooms

by 2010.

Earlier this month, Ford announced a partnership with Southern California Edison to test rechargeable hybrid vehicles and hasten mass production of plug-in hybrids.

Ford has been testing plug-in hybrids based on the Escape sport-utility vehicle, for one, but has not said when it plans to start mass producing them.

Toyota said its Japan prices for the Prius would start at 2.05 (m) million yen, or about 21,600 US dollars at current exchange rates, less than its predecessor model.

But in an unusual move aimed at competing against the Insight, Toyota also said it will continue to sell the current Prius in Japan, and cut its price.

It targets rental and corporate customers, and will sell for 1.89 (m) million yen, the same price as the Insight.

Toyota had already given the US prices for the 2010 Prius, starting at 22,000 US dollars, unchanged from the base price for the 2009 model.

It is also promising a more basic US model as well for later this year starting at 21,000 US dollars.

The new Prius gets a combined 50 miles per gallon (mpg), compared with 46 mpg for the 2009 model, according to Toyota.

Toyota is promising 38 kilometres per litre, which converts to 90 miles per gallon, in Japan, for the latest Prius.

Toshio Aritake, an auto analyst at the showroom in Tokyo called the Prius "very competitive."

Toyota said its Japan prices for the Prius would start at 2.05 (m) million yen, or about 21,600 US dollars at current exchange rates, less than its predecessor model.

But in an unusual move aimed at competing against the Insight, Toyota also said it will continue to sell the current Prius in Japan, and cut its price.

It targets rental and corporate customers, and will sell for 1.89 (m) million yen, the same price as the Insight.

Toyota had already given the US prices for the 2010 Prius, starting at 22,000 US dollars, unchanged from the base price for the 2009 model.

It is also promising a more basic US model as well for later this year starting at 21,000 US dollars.

The new Prius gets a combined 50 miles per gallon (mpg), compared with 46 mpg for the 2009 model, according to Toyota.

Toyota is promising 38 kilometres per litre, which converts to 90 miles per gallon, in Japan, for the latest Prius.

Toshio Aritake, an auto analyst at the showroom in Tokyo called the Prius "very competitive."

Toyota on Tuesday announced the company was recalling nearly 200-thousand of its signature Prius green cars in Japan for braking problems, the latest in a string of embarrassing safety lapses at the world''s largest automaker.

Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda was set to hold a news conference at the automaker''s Tokyo office later on Tuesday to outline

details of the braking problem, including plans for a possible recall in the United States.

In further developments, a Toyota official told The Associated Press that the Prius gas-electric hybrid would be recalled in Europe in addition to Japan.

The number of Prius gas-electric hybrids involved in the recall would swell to about 300-thousand if there is a recall in the US and other regions.

The braking problem for the third-generation remodelled Prius is the latest safety woe for Toyota, which is already trying to fix problems in (m) millions of vehicles recalled for other defects, including a sticky gas pedal.

On Monday, Toyota officials went to Japan''s Transport Ministry to formally notify officials the company was recalling the 2010 Prius gas-electric hybrid, the world''s top-selling hybrid car, and two other hybrid models.

In total, the recall involves over 223-thousand hybrid cars.

Toyota will recall nearly 200-thousand Prius vehicles sold in Japan from April last year through Monday, according to papers the automaker filed with the ministry.

The two other hybrids being recalled are the Lexus HS250h sedan, sold in the US and Japan, and the Sai, which is sold only in Japan.

There have been nearly 200 complaints in Japan and the US of drivers experiencing a short delay before the brakes kick in.

The delay doesn''t indicate a brake failure.

A fix requires new software that oversees the controls of the antilock brakes, the papers say.

Toyota Motor Corporation said on Thursday it had returned to a profit in the latest quarter as government incentives boosted sales, leading the world's largest automaker to trim its projected red ink for the year.

The world's largest car company reported a better-than-expected a 21.8 (b) billion yen, or 242 (m) million US dollar, profit for the July-September period after three straight quarterly losses.

The result marked an 84 percent plunge from the 139.8 (b) billion yen, or 1.54 (b) billion US dollar, profit racked up the same period a year ago, but underlined a gradual recovery for Toyota, which sank to its worst loss for the fiscal year which ended on March 31.

Executive Vice President of the Toyota Motor Corporation, Yoichiro Ichimaru, told a news conference in Tokyo on Thursday that the increase was due to the market's recovery "thanks to the various government incentive incentive packages and increasing sales of eco-vehicles such as hybrid cars."

The news marked the latest in a series of recoveries for Japanese automakers - rivals Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. have both recently reported healthier earnings after taking a battering from the global economic crisis.

Toyota said it now expects to sell more vehicles for the fiscal year through March 2010, raising its projections to 7.03 (m) million vehicles from 6.6 (m) million.

The company, which makes the Prius hybrid and the Corolla subcompact, said sales in the last six months were proving better than earlier expectations as government stimulus measures around the world spur sales.

As a result, the company forecasts a smaller loss for the fiscal year of 200 billion yen - 2.2 (b) billion US dollars - much better than the 450 (b) billion yen - 5 (b) billion US dollars - of red ink it had predicted earlier.

STORYLINE:

Japans' biggest motor show gave the press a preview on Wednesday. The thirty-ninth Tokyo Motor show includes thirty-eight automobile makers from Japan and the rest of the world. Japanese manufacturers are giving thirty-four new models their international debut.

The biggest floor space is occupied by Toyota, the world's second largest automobile maker.

The automaker, based in Toyota City, reported its best-ever fiscal year-profit of 1.17 (t) trillion yen (10.3 (b) billion US dollars) for the year ending in March 2005 as sales grew in North America, Europe, Japan and the rest of Asia.

Toyota is focusing on fuel cell hybrid technology and a new mode of personal mobility.

The "i-swing", single seat personal vehicle was unveiled on stage. It moves at walking speed on two wheels when upright. When in a hurry, the chair reclines and moves on three wheels. The unit learns the habits and preferences of the owner and then stores the relevant information.

Daihatsu unveiled its hybrid car, the UFE-III. According to the maker, this car is as fast as a conventional sports car, yet it employs the eco-friendly hybrid system.

The Suzuki Ionis concept car is fuel cell-powered and uses General Motor's drive-by-wire technology to control the steering, the brakes, and the throttles. These can go anywhere in its interior space.

Drive-by-wire technology employs no mechanical links between the steering column, the wheels and the brakes. They are connected by a sophisticated system of electronic sensors, wires and controls.

The Honda Motor Company has designed a car that's friendly for dogs - the W.O.W. Part of the company's ongoing effort is to create vehicles that are easy to use and comfortable to ride in.

W.O.W stands for "wonderful openhearted wagon".

A special crate for dogs in the glove compartment allows owners to interact with their pets whilst driving. A bigger crate pops up from the floor in the back seat area and can be folded back into the floor when it's not needed. Bigger dogs can be buckled up with a special seat belt attached to the floor.

A big danger for pets riding in cars is of being thrown out during a crash. About a fifth of Japanese households have a dog, and demand is growing for cars that cater to 'man's best friend', according to Honda.

The W.O.W comes with removable, washable, rollout flooring and has wide sliding doors to allow easy entry and exit for canines.

Tokyo Motor show opens to the public on Saturday October 22 and runs until November 6. Many non-Japanese automobile makers are participating in the Motor Show including the world number one, General Motors.

LEAD IN:

Pushing hybrid technology ever further, a number of environmentally friendly vehicles are on display at this year's Paris Auto Show.

STORYLINE:

Motor companies from around the world displayed their 2008 models at the Paris Motor Show.

The Mondial de L'Automobile is expected to showcase more than 60 new designs and concept cars from manufacturers from Detroit to China, and is expected to draw more than a (m) million visitors.

While some vehicle manufacturers stick to tried and tested vehicles and displays, others push the boundaries of technology.

With a greater demand for cleaner cars many manufacturers displayed the latest environmentally friendly designs, including the latest in hybrid technology.

Many hybrid cars incorporate a mixture of technologies such as internal combustion engines, electric motors, battery (electricity) hydrogen and fuel.

And car maker Venturi were in a league of their own with their electro-solar car the Astrolab.

According to Venturi the vehicle can reach a top speed of 120 kilometre per hour (119 miles per hour).

Marianne Hollande from Venturi Automobiles says they are the first company in the world to produce such a car.

It is currently only made-to-order for around Euro92, 000 (US$116, 000).

As well as carmakers from the US and Europe, this years car show also welcomed a number of car manufacturers from China.

On show was the Landwind X-pedition made by JiangLing, the first Chinese car to be sold in Europe.

Asia Auto External Affairs with China spokesperson Min Li says the European market is very important to them.

But along with the less familiar names were household vehicle manufacturers.

The Toyota Prius Hybrid runs on both petrol and an emissions-free electric motor.

Colin Hensley, Toyota's General manager in Europe, explains how the engines work.

While the SAAB Aero X, a fossil free hybrid concept car, has been seen at a number of car shows this year.

Stephane Huguet, SAAB spokesman explains the how the biofuel engine is better for the environment.

SAAB also had it's new S9-3 cabriolet Hybrid Biopower concept car on display.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) says its time for major car makers to build more cars that pollute less and use less fuel.

A new study by the environmental group says US automakers could boost fuel efficiency and cut pollution by using hybrid technologies.

Members of the Union were in Los Angeles Friday, joined by local owners of hybrid cars urging automakers to offer more hybrid models.

They met outside the city's convention center where major auto makers are gathering for the annual Greater Los Angeles Auto Show.

Hybrid cars combine a fuel-efficient gas burning engine and an electric motor to power vehicles.

The UCS study says cars and trucks could reach an average fuel efficiency of 60 miles per gallon by the end of the next decade if automakers use the best available hybrid technologies.

Many of the local hybrid car owners on hand for the rally drive some of the first available models of their kind, from Toyota and Honda.

The Toyota Prius, Honda Insight and Honda Civic models at the rally use versions of hybrid engine technology.

The Prius, for example, has an electric motor that takes over for the gas-powered engine at lower speeds. The battery for the electric motor is recharged by the the gas engine.

The cars produce fewer polluting gases and also average between 40 and 50 miles per gallon of gas.

Both Toyota and Honda have been the only car companies selling hybrid cars for several years.

Toyota alone has sold more than 120,000 since it introduced the Prius in 2000.

Honda sells its two-seat Insight and a hybrid version of its four-door Civic, with plans to roll out other hybrid models over the next few years.

Beyond the hybrid concept, Honda is developing a fuel cell car powered by hydrogen.

The Japanese automaker says their FCX model is the first fuel cell car to receive a government certification for commercial use.

And US automakers are starting to pay attention to this small but growing segment of the auto market.

Ford Motor Company has announced plans to launch a hybrid version of its Escape sport utility vehicle next year.

At the LA auto show, Ford also introduced the PZEV concept: a car designed to produce extremely low emissions.

General Motors is also gearing up to produce hybrid powered versions of its sport utility vehicles and pick-up trucks.

Chrysler also plans to produce its first hybrid pick-up truck later this year.

But company officials are down playing hybrids, saying they're not a viable long-term commercial alternative.

Jason Mark at the Union of Concerned Scientists says hybrid technology is a viable bridge to fuel-cell powered cars that could some day replace the gas-burning engine.

The rising price of petrol may have some drivers wondering if a car powered by conventional fuel is such a good idea.

Now a company in the United States is to launch a new series of electric cars which, it's claimed, will show that alternative fuel doesn't have to be slow and boring on the highway.

STORYLINE:

It wouldn't be the first time that car owners in America have pondered the possibility of getting from A to B with something other than gasoline.

The engineers at A-C Propulsion, near Los Angeles, are trying to help consumers longing for some relief on their pocket books.

The company's specialty is making cars that run on electricity.

Their aim is to make cars that go fast, and for a long periods of time, on electricity.

The firm's President, Tom Gage, gets behind the wheel of AC Propulsion's T-Zero concept car to prove the point that an electric powered car doesn't have to be slow and boring.

Gage says the sporty T-Zero's numbers are proof that an electric vehicle can really go.

In a 2003 competition, the T-Zero went from zero to 60 in three-point-six seconds, with a top speed of a hundred miles per hour.

The T-Zero averaged 300 miles on a single charge of its battery back.

Now, Gage and his team are putting the T-Zero's powerful package of electric technology into a car ready made for consumers.

They're transforming Toyota Scions from gas to electric-power, using an electric motor and battery system developed by AC Propulsion.

Gage says with the Toyota Scion, and the electric power package, the company believes they've got the right combination, a consumer-friendly car with highway speed and enough range for around-town driving.

Technicians at AC Propulsion are stripping down the Toyota Scions to make room for a lithium ion battery pack, the same batteries used in computer laptops, and for an electric motor.

Gage says it's really an effort to update an old idea, since electric cars are nothing new.

In the late 1890s, electric cars outsold gasoline cars ten to one.

By 1912 there were more than thirty eight -thousand electric cars on the roads, according to the Electric Auto Association.

But mass production of petrol cars took the lead long ago, leaving the future of electric cars in doubt.

Now, Gage says America's dependence on petrol may finally convince consumers to take an alternative look.

But Gage admits that convincing American consumers to go electric is still an uphill battle.

Even with a ready-to-go electric engine built with proven technology, and a car like the Toyota Scion that can hit speeds like the experimental T-Zero, Gage and his team know convincing the average consumer won't be easy.

It may not be the fast and furious T-Zero. But Gage and his team believe the electric Toyota Scion is a car consumers could drive.

He says the first of their electric powered Scion's should be ready to roll out the garage by early June

They hope to have a production line of about 10 Scions a month by early next year.

The Frankfurt Motor Show is the biggest in the world and is the place to see what tomorrow''s cars today - from zany concept cars to hi-tech hydrogen fuel technology.

There''s no need for a crystal ball, here''s what the car makers think we will be driving in the future.

STORYLINE:

Is this what the garage of the future looks like? A line up of cars plugged into power sockets.

Urban car maker Smart certainly thinks so.

The future drives into town at this year''s IAA Frankfurt Motor Show with manufacturers showing off the latest innovations in hybrid and electric-powered vehicles.

These Smart cars have ditched their traditional one-litre petrol engines for a Tesla lithium-ion battery pack.

These near-production models show what the cars will look like when they hit showrooms in the second quarter of 2012.

The battery has a range of nearly 90 miles and the car has a top speed of 75mph.

Smart is boasting a sprightly performance of 0-40 mph in around five seconds.

At Mercedes, the SLS AMG E-Cell is on display in bright acid green, packing 533 horsepower this fully electric vehicle. Mercedes claim acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just four seconds. Enough to embarrass most gas-guzzling, petrol-powered sports cars away from the lights.

The B-Class F-Cell (fuel cell) runs from another power source altogether - hydrogen.

It has been produced in a limited edition of just 200 units, for select customers. To prove the hydrogen concept works, the cars was driven around the world on all five continents

Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche believes sales of hydrogen vehicles will soon match those of diesel hybrids:

"We will start with a significantly higher volume of production in 2014 and we foresee in the year 2016, at the latest 17, to accomplish a cost position which is equal or similar to Diesel Hybrid. So within these five to six years we are not only technically but economically fully competitive with this new drive-train as well."

On the Volkswagen stand, a new four-seater urban model called the "up!" is attracting attention.

The German car maker is calling the class a New Small Family car.

The basic version comes with a one-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine capable of either 60 or 75bhp.

The Volkswagen "up!" starts at an affordable 9,850 Euros (USD 13,642).

Along with the release of the "up!", which is intended for mass production, several concept studies are on show, including the "up! Azzurra", conceived as a ''beach car''.

Volkswagen is also showing off its single-passenger study "Nils", focusing on urban mobility and single commuters.

Dr. Natascha K�nstner, Volkswagen Research and Development says: "Nils" is a concept car by VW Research and it focuses on micro-mobility, that is to say, urban mobility. It is a single-passenger vehicle, because studies have shown that 70 percent of commuters drive less than 25 kilometres to work, and that 90 percent drive by themselves. That is why it is a single-passenger concept."

Audi has come up with its own similar one-seater study called "urban concept".

It comes with a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis with 21-inch wheels covered by protective plates. A sliding canopy provides access to the car, much like a fighter jet.

At BMW, the "i8" plug-in hybrid concept was all the rage.

It''s a sports car capable of 0-60mph in four and a half seconds and with a top-speed of 155mph.

The four seater "i8" combines an electric motor with a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 220bhp.

The world''s biggest automotive manufacturers are here, but so are some of the smallest, but they don''t lack ambition.

Croatian up-and-coming automotive designer Mate Rimac presented his "concept one" sports car.

According to Rimac, it is the most powerful fully electric performance vehicle in the world packing a white-knuckle 1,088bhp.

He says: "Frankfurt Motor Show is the biggest automobile exhibition in the world and we have come here to present our concept. The whole industry is here and our aim is to network and present our work looking at its best."

The idea for his car came after the team converted an old BMW into a superfast electric race car. Rimac Automobili "concept one" is the result.

At Toyota, holding the majority of patents in hybrid technology, changes to the popular Prius series were presented.

Toyota managed to add an optional third row of seating in its Prius+ due to innovations in making the lithium batteries it uses lighter and smaller.

At Renault, which is on the forefront of affordable hybrid and electric models, the fully electric one-seater study "Twizy" was presented.

The Frankfurt Motor Show continues until September 25, 2011.

LEAD IN:

China's third-largest auto show kicked off Tuesday (24 November) in the country's southern city of Guangzhou, as more than 600 international car makers gather to showcase their latest models together with their Chinese joint ventures.

Themed as "Technology, Trend and New Life", the annual auto show presents about 70 new models for the first time in China.

STORYLINE:

This is Essence, an electric and petrol hybrid coupe with 600PS engine.

It is Infinity's latest concept car, equipped with a new direct-injection fuel system which, according to Nissan, ensures the engine works more efficiently than before.

In its trunk, briefcases from Louise Vuitton demonstrate the collaboration between the car manufacturer and the luxury brand.

Essence is one of the highlights of this year's auto show in Guangzhou, demonstrating that the Chinese car market is growing strong.

Yasuaki Hashimoto, President of Nissan, says that this year China is showing a very big growth, while the other markets like the US, Europe and Japan are struggling to maintain sales.

"China is showing the significant growth, more than 30 per cent so far, for passenger big growth sales in China. But still the China market has a big potential because China's modernisation has just started. I think China will be the biggest market in the world very soon and this is a significant potential we see in China, so we have a reason to see China will be the most important strategy market for us."

Alongside Essence, another Infinity car got its premiere: the all-new G37 convertible.

Over at Ford - the Changan Ford is being unveiled. It's a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Changan Motors in Chongqing China, celebrates it's upgraded 2010 Ford Mondeo.

The company is confident that the new model's classy appearance and spacious interior can win the hearts of high-end customers.

Ford's EcoBoost engine cutaway is also being showcased for the first time to demonstrate Ford's green technology, which will be introduced in China next year.

The engine's new technology delivers up to 20% better fuel economy and 15% fewer CO2 emissions.

Nigel Harris, General Manager of Changan Ford Sales Company, says the future looks promising for them.

Germany luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz showcases three new cars that incorporate its latest Blue Efficiency green technology.

The E-200 and E-260 sedans could save at least 0.15 litre per 100 kilometres in fuel consumption, according to the car maker.

Toyota Motor Corp presents its FT-EV electric car powered by motor and lithium battery.

At the Japanese auto maker's booth the FT-HS sports car is on show. It uses new hybrid technologies. There's also the Hi-CT plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Chinese automobile manufacturers BYD and Geely are also showing their new electric and hybrid cars at the event.

China's auto sales are the world's highest this year.

According to the state-sanctioned China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, sales in October were up by 72 percent from last year to 1.2 million vehicles.

Total sales up until early November are 10.9 million vehicles, compared with 8.6 million in the United States, according to Autodata Corp.

The Chinese government's stimulus policies have included cutting consumption taxes on cars with an engine capacity of 1.6 litres or below to 5 per cent from 10 per cent, and giving subsidies to villagers of up to 5,000 yuan (730$ US Dollars) to buy a small car.

A car analyst in Hong Kong expects these measures will be kept in place over the next year, as the Chinese government has announced to curb carbon emissions.

Thus small displacement engines would be encouraged.

Simon Lam, Research director at Christfund Securities Limited, says the cheap labour costs in China is attracting international manufacturers to expand production there.

"So they are making very good profits to their parent company, if you compare them making the same sales, making the same number of the vehicle with their country. So, I believe that all the manufactures, they intend to increase their capacity, which is compare their slowing down their own production line in their own country."

The Guangzhou auto show ran from 24 to 30 November.

STORYLINE:

Car manufacturers unveiled a range of electric cars and hybrid engines at this year's Frankfurt Auto Show, which opened to media on Tuesday.

Companies from Volkswagen AG to Hyundai Motor Co. took part with a particular focus on designs that eschew traditional combustion engines in favour of more environmentally friendly electric motors or a hybrid blend of both.

Analysts expect global production of purely electric cars to expand rapidly in the coming years. IHS Global Insight forecasts an increase from nearly 9,500 this year to more than 58,000 in 2011.

New offerings included BMW's Vision EfficientDynamics, a plug-in diesel-electric hybrid, and the Opel Ampere.

Toyota had new models on show including the first plug-in version of Toyota's Prius hybrid, which can have its batteries charged at a household outlet.

Renault displayed several electric concept cars and Mercedes offered up the F-Cell, which sports a fuel cell and an electric motor.

Technology analyst at ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club, the German Automobile Club), Manfred Gross, said electric cars are still limited because the technology is expensive.

He added electric vehicles may be comparable to the standard combustion engine in ten years time.

The 63rd Frankfurt Auto Show is scheduled to open to the public on September 17.

Despite the economic crisis across the globe, sales representatives at the motor show in Turkey are optimistic about the future.

And it's not the cheaper models that are selling well.

STORYLINE:

From eco cars to the latest high end sports models there's something to suit every budget at the 12th International Auto show Exhibition in Istanbul.

Forty seven brands are showing seventy four new models and around 200 companies.

And despite fears of a slow down in the motor industry, industry insiders remained upbeat.

Cagri Oztas of Dogus Oto, a car dealer which represents Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Skoda and VW in Turkey, says more than 100 thousand visitors came to their hall on Sunday October 12, 2008.

Mert Kalyon, a representative of the Volvo Car Turkey says that they sold half of their cars on the show in the first three days.

Both salesmen say these figures show the global economic crisis has not affected Turkey yet.

However visitor Cenk Diken says he is surprised to see the amount of money some people can pay for a vehicle at a time of widespread economic crises.

Another car fan Hayrettin Ozturk says that success of luxury brands, despite the global economic crisis, shows the disparity between the super wealthy and the incomes of ordinary Turks.

Although Istanbul lacks a range of concept cars because of a conflicting timetable with the recent Paris Auto Show, Mazda were showing off their model called Kazamai.

Many of the vehicles are being promoted as fuel efficient or utilising environmentally friendly energy alternatives to carbon based fuels.

Visitors could also view a selection of environmentally friendly vehicles for every budget.

Toyota Motor Corp was showing off two hybrid cars : the luxury -class Lexus GS450h, which is powered by an electric motor and gasoline engine, or the Prius, for more modest budgets.

Gas-electric hybrids like the Prius deliver better mileage by switching between a gas engine and electric motor, and a plug-in hybrid can travel longer as an electric vehicle, using less gasoline than a regular hybrid.

In August 2008 Toyota lowered its global sales target for 2009 by 700,000 vehicles to 9.7 million, showing that even one of the world's most durable automakers is being hurt by rising material costs, a slowing U.S. market and soaring fuel prices.

The exhibition takes place in an area of 120,000 square meters, and 650 thousand visitors are expected to visit the show.

The International Auto show Exhibition in Istanbul runs from October 10 - October 19, 2008.

Mitsubishi unveiled the i-MiEV Friday at its headquarters in Tokyo.

The i-MiEV is powered solely by electricity, and can be recharged from a regular home socket.

The four-seater vehicle can run up to 160 kilometres (100 miles) after charging seven hours with a 200 volt charger.

STORYLINE:

Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s electric vehicle is twice as expensive as popular hybrid cars by rivals Toyota and Honda, but Japan's No. 4 automaker said Friday the i-MiEV is the answer to its survival in cutthroat global competition.

"Taking into account the competition with the world's car industries and makers in 10 or 20 years, it is impermissible that Japanese automakers fall behind. We must be prepared in every way," said Osamu Masuko President of Mitsubishi Motors at the unveiling of the vehicle.

The i-MiEV costs 4.59 million yen ($47,560), twice as expensive as Toyota Motor Corp.'s new Prius, which is just over 2 million yen ($20,748)

It is far pricier than Honda Motor Co.'s Insight, which starts at only 1.89 million yen, the cheapest gas-electric hybrid on the market ($19,607).

Masuko acknowledged the high price is a major hurdle to boosting demand for the i-MiEV. "We are aware this is not the price that ordinary people can easily buy. But as we increase our production, we aim to cut the price below 2 million yen (approximately 20,000 US dollars) in the near future," he said.

Masuko said Mitsubishi had spent more than 40 years developing the i-MiEV.

He declined to say how much the company had invested in the development of electric vehicles.

It expects to sell 1,400 units mostly to local governments and companies for the current business year to March 2010.

Sales to individual consumers in Japan will begin in April 2010.

The company aims to sell 250 units abroad, mainly in Britain and other European countries, in the current financial year.

Mitsubishi also plans to sell the i-MiEV in China and the United States, but Masuko gave no details.

Mitsubishi hopes to sell 15,000 units worldwide for the business year to March 2012.

But Masuko said Mitsubishi can only make profits from the i-MiEV if it produces 30,000 units per year.

Masuko stressed that the i-MiEV has the potential for growth, adding that the company is considering making a commercial electric vehicle.

The expected growth of such "green" cars is offering a glimmer of hope for the world's automakers, which are battered by plunging auto demand caused by the global economic slowdown and credit crunch.

Honda's new zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell car rolled off a Japanese production line Monday (16JUN08).

The new vehicle is headed to southern California, where Hollywood is already abuzz over the latest splash in green motoring.

The FCX Clarity runs on hydrogen and electricity, emitting only water and none of the gases believed to induce global warming.

STORYLINE:

Honda's latest creation is, according to the manufacturers, two times more energy efficient than a gas-electric hybrid and three times that of a standard gasoline-powered car.

Fuel cells create electricity in a chemical process combining hydrogen and oxygen and only emit water vapour.

Designed for practical every day use, the car speeds up to 100 mph maximum and travels as far as 270 miles.

Honda expects to lease out a "few dozen" units this year and about 200 units within a year. In California, a

three-year lease will run $600 a month, which includes maintenance and collision coverage.

President Takeo Fukui says that Honda intends to lead the future of automotive industry with environmental technologies, adding that there is no future for the automotive industry unless environmental issues are addressed.

Senior Chief Engineer, Sachito Fujimoto, says the car excites him not just because it satisfies the company's environmental responsibility. The architecture of the car, which uses a fuel cell stack, creates avenues for exploring new designs, performance, and sensations behind the wheel.

Among the first customers are Ron Yerxa (who produced the award-winning film "Little Miss Sunshine"), Jon Spallino, CFO of California-based engineering and construction firm, and actress Laura Harris.

Actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest are also among the first five customers.

"I am just really looking forward to a completely new alternative of transportation," said Laura Harris whilst adding that the car was both extraordinary and exquisite.

Spallino says the drive is fantastic with great acceleration, great handling and great comfort.

The biggest obstacles standing in the way of wider adoption of fuel cell vehicles are cost and the dearth of

hydrogen fuel stations. For the Clarity's release in California, Honda said it received 50,000 applications

through its Web site but considered only buyers living near hydrogen fuel stations in Torrance, Santa Monica and

Irvine.

Initially, however, the Clarity will go only to a chosen few starting July and then launch in Japan in the autumn.

Although Honda Motor Co. was the first Japanese automaker to launch a gas-electric hybrid vehicle in the U.S. in

1999, it has been outpaced by the dominance of Toyota's popular Prius.

Toyota announced in May that it has sold more than 1million Prius hybrids, while both the Honda Insight and the

hybrid Accord have been discontinued due to poor sales.

Honda plans to deliver at least 200 FCX Clarity over the next three years in Japan and the US combined as initiatives for achieving more widespread use of fuel cell vehicles in the future.

The FCX Clarity is part of Honda's plan to keep pace with rivals in green technology. It also plans to launch a

gas-electric hybrid-only model, as well as hybrid versions of the Civic, the sporty CR-Z and Fit subcompact.

EcoVelocity is an outdoor car show with a difference - this eco-conscious motor show celebrates all things green.

In the shadow of London''s iconic Battersea Power Station, EcoVelocity houses hundreds of electric and hybrid cars from all the major manufacturers.

STORYLINE:

The flag is waved and they''re off - in total silence, unusually perhaps, for London Mayor Boris Johnson in the lead car.

Electric vehicles, hybrids, and low carbon combustion engines are all on parade at EvoVelocity at Battersea in London.

This green motor festival is the first of its kind in the UK and serves as an antidote to some of the fuel-thirsty, petrol-head shows of the car industry.

In the shadows of Battersea''s redundant coal-fired power station a new breed of carbon-friendly cars are on parade.

Giles Brown, event director for EcoVelocity, explains the concept:

"EcoVelocity is a new type of show. In the absence of the British Motor Show we wanted to create something where members of the general public can come and test drive cars of all shapes and sizes - but on a low carbon basis. It''s all about the latest technology in cars, with electric cars, hybrid cars. Really focussing on the low carbon element of the industry."

Opening the show is London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Best known for cycling through the capital using pedal power, Johnson is keen to stamp his green credentials on the capital ahead of 2012 and the Olympic year.

For the Mayor the challenge is to change negative perceptions:

"One of the difficulties about getting people to take up electric vehicles - and that is ''range anxiety''. People are anxious that when they get into an electric vehicle that their battery may conk out and they''ll be stranded. So, if you have charge points dotted around the city in the way that we''re doing, we hope to defeat that anxiety and get people to take up electric vehicles."

Johnson claims London is the electric vehicle capital of Europe with some 2,000 - 3,000 registered electric cars.

But with more silent electric vehicles on the capital''s streets he says one of the biggest problems is that pedestrians don''t hear them coming and can step out in front of them.

Johnson has his own ideas for a solution:

"You could imagine they could all have little theme songs," he says.

This is the Peel P50 and, according to the Guinness World Records, it''s the world''s smallest car.

It used to feature a tiny 49cc petrol engine but now the tiny Peel has been given an electric motor.

George Gilmore, manager at Peel Engineering, explains how the new model works:

But how can the average sized man squeeze into the tiny proportions of this pint-sized Peel? Easy, according to Gilmore.

Although the event is dominated by electric and hybrid vehicles, some manufacturers believe there''s life in the internal combustion engine yet.

KIA is holding up its new Rio as a model for future diesel engines, claiming a performance and economy better than any other non-electric car on sale in the world.

The Rio will also be sold with a seven year or 100,000 mile warranty.

EcoVelocity is also the UK premiere of French manufacturer Mia''s new electric family car.

This fully electric vehicle was created by local art students from Cerizay, deep in rural western France.

It comes in three different sizes with the smallest variant offering a single front passenger seat - like a McLaren F1, but without the performance.

The cars come with ranges of between 90-130km (56-81 miles), depending on the size of the battery pack chosen by the customer.

Richard Deslandes, sales director of Mia electric says:

"This is the UK premiere of Mia. Mia is a French-made electric vehicle. We hope to have this available in the UK in February or so next year. It''s 100 percent electric. It''s designed and built in France and we''re absolutely delighted to be here in Battersea to show it to the British public for the first time."

The Mia comes with trendy interior touches like a plug-in point for a tablet computer and an iPod docking station. The sliding doors open with a touch of the floral-design button.

It might look small but the Mia has a luggage capacity of up to 1,500 litres (53 cubic feet).

The Mia will be available in the shops from early 2012.

From the twin-motor 394bhp Lightning GT, that can do 0-60mph in four seconds, to the more sedate family-friendly Nissan Leaf there''s a car for everybody at EcoVelocity - so long as it''s low carbon.

EcoVelocity runs from September 8-11, 2011 at Battersea, London.
