Some 120 firefighters on Friday were attempting to bring two grass fires under control to the east of London, Sky News reported.
Fire crews from several local boroughs were brought in to tackle the fires on Wanstead Flats.
Britain has been experiencing a heatwave for more than a week with the mercury reaching temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).
It is the longest heatwave for seven years.
London's firefighters say they are handling twice as many grass fires as they did in 2012.
The Met Office, Britain's official forecaster, warned of an "elevated risk" of fires in the countryside.
High temperatures are expected to continue into next week.
