PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN TO 'STEP BACK' AS SENIOR UK ROYALS

Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, said they are planning “to step back” as senior members of the royal family, a stunning revelation that underscores the wish of the couple to forge a new path for the royals in the modern world.

A statement issued by Buckingham Palace said Wednesday (8 January 2020), the the royal couple intend to become financially independent, shunning public support, to underpin their work on charities. It said they intend to “balance” their time between the U.K. and North America, where the 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex grew up.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," the couple said in a statement. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support her majesty the queen."

Harry, 35, is a grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and is sixth in line to the British throne.

Before marrying Harry in 2018, the duchess was the American actress known as Meghan Markle and a star of the TV show “Suits.” The royal couple has a baby son Archie, who was born in May 2019.

Although as an actress and human rights advocate the duchess was accustomed to media attention before her marriage, she has made no secret of the fact that the transition to the level of celebrity faced by Britain's royal family was difficult.

Last year, Harry lashed out at the British media for its treatment of his wife, accusing the media of hounding her the way they did his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a 1997 car crash while trying to elude paparazzi.

"My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I've seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces," Harry said in the fall.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have met with Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday, (15 October 2019) as they kicked of their five day tour of the country.

Earlier in the day the royal couple, who are strong advocates of girls' education, visited local schools where they spoke with students and their teachers.

They also toured a nearby national park in the Margalla Hills with local rangers.

Authorities have deployed more than 1,000 police and paramilitary forces to ensure the royal entourage's protection, setting up checkpoints and roadblocks in parts of the capital.

Prince William's mother, Princess Diana, visited Pakistan in the 1990s to participate in a fund-raising event for a cancer hospital built by Khan, who took office last year.

Britain's Prince Harry described Tuesday how fatherhood has helped him realise how important it is to have a good role model in life.

"Perhaps it's the newfound clarity I have as a father knowing that my son will always be watching what I do, mimicking my behaviour, one day maybe even following in my footsteps," he told the National Youth Mentoring Summit in London.

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, added that his late mother Princess Diana had been a role model for many people.

But being a royal wasn't always an asset for potential role models, he went on.

"You don't have to be a princess or a public figure to be a role model, in fact it's equally valuable if you're not because it's more relatable," he told the audience.

Britain's Prince Harry has given his support to an initiative to help Angola get rid of landmines, a cause also championed by his late mother, Princess Diana.  

The Duke of Sussex attended an event on Monday at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London's Chatham House, where he told the audience that landmines were a humanitarian issue, not a political one.

Angola has pledged 60 million US dollars to fund the work of landmine clearing organisation, the Halo Trust, which will work to clear 153 minefields in a huge conservation region.

Harry said he hoped by clearing its land of mines, Angola's vast and biodiverse wilderness would be "protected, celebrated and benefited by its people," and once again be a lucrative tourist destination.

"My hope is that through this collaboration, minefields can be cleared, land can be protected, wildlife can be free to return to where they once roamed, and Angolans can reap the rewards by coexisting with the one constant that will draw people in from all over the world - the extraordinary setting that they call home," he told the audience.

Just a few months before Diana was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997, she walked through an Angolan minefield cleared by the same organisation.

In 2013, Harry also travelled to Angola with the Halo Trust to meet landmine victims and see the work being done to clear the country of the munitions.

Britain's Prince Harry gave the keynote address at a reception to mark International Mine Awareness Day on Tuesday, asking for help to keep his mother's promise and rid the world of land mines.

Harry quoted the late Princess Diana during his speech, recalling how by shining the spotlight on the destructive effects of landmines, some believed she had overstepped the line into political campaigning.

"For her this wasn't about politics, it was about people," Harry said.

Harry also spoke of a promise she had given two young boys she had met on a visit to Bosnia in August 1997. Both had who suffered life-changing injuries from landmines.

"When my mother said goodbye to Zarko that August, just weeks before her untimely death, she told him he would not be forgotten. Please help me keep her word to Zarko and Malic, and other people like them throughout the world, who still need us to finish the job and rid the planet of landmines," the prince said.

Harry is highlighting his mother's cause just months ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death and has visited minefields in Angola and Mozambique.

DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE VISIT YOUNG OFFENDERS CHARITY

Prince William and Kate Middleton spent some time away from son Prince George on Tuesday morning (19 NOVEMBER 2013) as they visited crime prevention charity Only Connect in London.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were greeted by an excited crowd who were waiting outside of the charity's head office in King's Cross.

The new parents were shown around the charity's office where they met with staff and young people who told them about the ways Only Connect helps and supports prisoners, ex-offenders and young people at risk of re-offending.

Kate wore a bird printed tailored coat by Orla Kiely, while William dressed in a navy suit and purple tie.

Only Connect reach out to 10,000 people a year and is said to have helped reduce re-offending by almost half. Helping re-offenders is something which is close to William and his family as his aunt Lady Jane Fellowes, sister of Princess Diana, is a trustee of the charity.

STORYLINE:

There was excitement across the world amongst fans of Britain's royal family on Monday, with the announcement that Prince William and his wife Catherine are expecting their first child.

St.James's Palace said on Monday that the Duchess of Cambridge - formerly known as Kate Middleton - has a severe form of morning sickness and is currently in a London hospital.

The pregnancy is in its "very early stages," with the 30-year-old duchess expected to stay in the hospital for several days, according to the palace.

The royal family were said to be "delighted" by the news.

In recent days, Middleton has kept up royal appearances - recently playing field hockey with schoolchildren at her former school.

The confirmation of her pregnancy caps a jam-packed year of highs and lows for the young royals, who were married in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey last year.

They have been have travelled the world extensively as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond jubilee celebrations and weathered the embarrassment of a nude photos scandal, after a tabloid snapper published topless images of the duchess.

Speculation about when William and his bride would start a family has been rife since immediately after their wedding.

William's mother - the late Princess Diana - got pregnant just four months after her wedding in 1981.

Like Kate, Diana reportedly suffered from morning sickness for months and complained of constant media attention.

Whether boy or girl, the child will be next in line behind William in the line of succession to the throne, Cabinet Office officials have said.

PRINCE HARRY PROMOTES LATE MOTHER'S CAUSE: ANGOLA LAND MINES

Prince Harry has offered his support to a new initiative to clear land mines from a wilderness area in Angola, saying it will protect lives and help communities.

In backing the 47 million pound ($60 million) initiative of the Angolan government and the Halo Trust, Harry continued work on a cause championed by his late mother, Princess Diana. She drew attention to the African nation's dangerous minefields by stepping onto one.

The funds will be used to clear 153 minefields in an area with vital waterways to the Okavango Delta. The Halo Trust hopes foreign governments and individuals will match the funds pledged by the Angolan government.

Royals salute the forgotten army

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday (19/8) joined thousands

of second world war veterans to mark the 50th anniversary of the

Japanese surrender, and the end of World War 2. Among other

members of the royal family at the ceremony were the Prince and

Princess of Wales, who, although separated, attended with their

children. Four days after the anniversary of the actual date on

which the war ended, they attended a solemn service of

commemoration - conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and

several other clergy. British Prime Minister John Major and main

opposition leader Tony Blair were among the dignitaries. A

Lancaster bomber scattered thousands of scarlet paper poppies over

thousands of spectators packing the forecourt of Buckingham Palace

and the Mall that links it with Trafalgar Square. The poppy is a

symbol of the sacrifice made by British servicemen and women.

After the service, the Queen reviewed lines of non-marching

veterans, and then stood as a long parade of others marched past

her in the Mall. Later in the afternoon, the crowds watched a

series of flypasts by aircraft ranging from helicopters to

Spitfires. With the Queen on board the royal yacht Britannia, the

celebrations ended at dusk on Saturday in a spectacular fireworks

display over the River Thames.

STORYLINE

Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth II won''t be attending her son''s wedding to keep the occasion "low key."

Among royal watchers and wedding organisers alike, there was agreement that the impression of slipshod planning, a hint of queenly disapproval and lingering questions over the civil ceremony''s legality were tipping the upcoming nuptials of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles toward farce.

Buckingham Palace announced late on Tuesday that the monarch would not attend the April 8 wedding of her son and heir "because she is aware that the prince and Mrs. Parker Bowles wanted to keep the occasion low key."

While the Queen will not go to the civil ceremony, she will attend a church blessing and a reception afterwards at Windsor Castle.

A spokesman for Charles'' Clarence House office said the prince was "happy with the arrangements," and a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman insisted the queen''s absence did not imply criticism.

In Windsor, Patrick Jephson, a former private secretary to Princess Diana, denied talk of a snub, pointing out that the Queen''s primary duty is to her position as head of state - which includes her role as supreme head of the Church of England.

But some local residents were less certain, saying the move suggested the Queen wasn''t willing to welcome Camilla into the royal family.

Business leaders in Windsor brushed aside fears that the Queen''s decision may reduce the number of people who are expected to travel to the town on the big day.

George Hattingh whose shop is barely 100 metres from the castle entrance, said instead the renewed publicity could increase public interest.

Meanwhile, the British government''s top legal officer issued a ruling on Wednesday regarding the legality of the union.

A law dating from the 19th century barred royals from marrying outside church, and some experts believe it still applies today.

But attorney general Lord Falconer said on Wednesday the bar was removed when new legislation came into force in 1949.

Today''s legal ruling means local government officials in Windsor can now move ahead with plans for the civil ceremony to take place at the town''s Guildhall.

Lloyd White, who''s in charge of coordinating plans in his role as the council''s Head of Democratic Services, said everyone was relieved that clarity had been achieved on the issue.

After the black-tie glitz of a gala White House dinner, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, took their US tour on Thursday to humbler settings that reflect causes close to their hearts - health care, architecture and religious tolerance.

On their second day in Washington, D.C. the US capital, the British prince and the Duchess visited the National Institute of Health, the National Building Museum and attended a seminar on religious faith at Georgetown University.

Prince Charles spoke at an event at the National Building Museum where he accepted an award for his contribution to architecture. He donated the 30-thousand US dollar prize money to hurricane recovery in Mississippi.

Charles and Camilla were due to see hurricane damage first-hand on Friday, flying to New Orleans to meet residents and recovery workers.

Earlier Thursday, Camilla arrived with the prince to meet doctors and patients at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

The royal couple was greeted at the institute by US Surgeon General Richard Carmona - who almost succeeded in leading the duchess into a full-length glass window.

The spotlight-shunning duchess made a rare public speech after meeting doctors working to treat osteoporosis.

Addressing about 40 researchers with her husband by her side, Camilla pointed out the "horrifying" statistics about the disease, which affects half of all women over 50 in Britain.

She called for greater efforts to "prevent future generations worldwide from suffering the pain and ignominy of osteoporosis."

The royal couple rounded off their day by attending a reception at the residence of the British Ambassador to the US, Sir David Manning.

Interest in the royal visit has been muted in Washington, which has been preoccupied with scandals involving top White House and congressional figures, battles over a Supreme Court vacancy and the rising death toll in Iraq.

Three days into a week-long trip - the couple's first overseas tour since marrying in April - Charles and Camilla have already dined with President George W. Bush at the White House, socialised with Sting and Yoko Ono at a New York reception and met students at an inner-city boarding school.

The trip, which began Tuesday in New York, also includes a visit to San Francisco.
