Special dance classes in Italy are helping mothers and babies bond by keeping them attached to one another during exercise.

The practise, known as baby wearing dance, helps both mum and baby release and share feel-good hormones

STORYLINE

Dance teacher, Elena Alessandra Zo is getting ready for her weekly class in Asti, a small city in northwestern Italy.

With her long hair pulled back, Zo puts her ballet shoes on and carefully straps her daughter Dorotea to her chest with a fabric wrap.

'Baby wearing dance' is an off-shoot of the baby wearing practice: it involves keeping a child close to a an adult's body (generally a parent or a caregiver) with the help of a baby carrier.

Zo, who started to dance at the age of five and has been teaching it for 12 years, explains what the practice involves.

"Baby wearing dance means dancing while carrying one's own child in an ergonomic fashion. One can use not only wraps but also mei tai (a type of baby carrier) or ergonomic pouches. They're all supports that allow mothers to dance safely", she says.

As the mothers practice their dance moves, their children are gently rocked and often fall asleep.

Zo's class - appropriately named "Cuore a Cuore" ("Heart to Heart" in English) - is one of several that have recently sprung up in Italy. They also exist around the world, from the United States to Romania, India and Australia.

Its fans say its success is down to the special bond it helps develop between mother and baby. .

Zo says that during her class she watches mothers experiencing a whole range of raw feelings.

"I see them getting emotional, I see them passionate, I see them radiant. I see them experience a great variety of emotions. They themselves are amazed", she says.

Antonella Gennatiempo is a psychologist and founder of "Scuola del Portare" (School of Carrying).

Founded in 2006, "Scuola del Portare" is one of Italy's first schools for baby wearing consultants.

Gennatiempo says baby wearing dance has unique benefits for both mother and baby:

"Baby wearing dance allows her (the mother) to get together with other mothers who share the same needs. But above all, through the evocative power of music and dance, the mother produces a series of hormones that are essential to her well-being, such as oxytocin. (The hormones) are then transmitted to her child. A happy mother who's wearing her child and who's dancing in a state of well-being passes this all to her own baby", she says.

Heart to Heart's classes are two-fold: they combine body expression with some modern dance moves.

Other variations of baby wearing dance around the world include jazz, oriental, Latin-American and belly dancing, to name just a few.

But Zo warns the dance moves need to be chosen carefully for the safety of mother and child. Baby wearing dance shouldn't include moves such as jumps and pirouettes that could make mothers dizzy and cause them to fall over.

She says a physiotherapist or obstetrician should approve the dance moves to make sure they are compatible with the mothers' post birth recovery.

Many mothers who attend Zo's class already practice baby wearing.

Student Egle Chiesa credits baby wearing dance for allowing her to strengthen her bond with her daughter Giada who was born premature.

"Dance is a passion of mine and sharing it with my daughter is beautiful, something I've always wanted to do", she says.

Another student, Sonia Profita, explains how baby wearing dance effects her:.

"I feel his heart beat, he feels my heart beat. I'm moved every time I feel him so close, every time I put him inside (the wrap). It's incredible that no matter what discomfort the baby has he calms down once he's inside (the pouch)", she says.

Clinical psychologist Rita Caporali says there is science to back up the physical and psychological benefits of baby wearing dance:

"We can find benefits for baby wearing dance also on a hormonal level. We know that by practicing sport, by moving, higher levels of serotonin are produced and serotonin is defined as the hormone of well-being. So through baby wearing dance a mother's happiness is passed on to her child, is transferred to her baby. We can assume that through baby wearing dance a child will develop a sense of well-being and will likely be a calmer baby, a child who will cry less", she says.

By the end of Zo's class most babies are asleep and the mum's look so relaxed they might be ready for a nap when they get home too.

Clubbing is no longer limited to the over 18s.

A baby disco is offering an authentic club experience to children and their parents on a Sunday afternoon.

STORYLINE

As the DJ starts spinning and the music starts pumping, the youngsters start hitting the dancefloor.

But take a closer look and you may notice that everyone at this particular club seems to be underage.

In fact, it might be a bit hard for some of them to get their groove on because they have just learned how to walk.

It's not Saturday night, but Sunday afternoon and the clubbers at the Stratford Circus in East London aren't teens or twentysomethings, but children accompanied by their parents.

Welcome to Baby Loves Disco, aimed at children aged six months to seven years old.

In venues around Britain and the United States, mothers and fathers are taking their newborns and toddlers to baby discos, taking part in an activity that allows parents to hit the dance floor and regain some of their social life while helping their children learn how to dance and get active.

At the Stratford Circus performing arts venue, an auditorium has been transformed into a discotheque, with subdued lighting, strobe lights and a mirror ball.

There's a chill-out zone on one side of the room, with toys, games and books while out in the foyer free healthy organic snacks have been laid out on a table.

The kids and their parents are dancing to disco tunes from the 1970s, 1980s and onwards, ranging from Blondie's "Heart of Glass" to "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc. to "I Like To Move It" by Reel2Reel.

Unlike regular nightclubs, the noise level is limited to 80 decibels.

There are no bouncers or velvet ropes at the front door, though staff are on hand to make sure energetic youngsters don't run outside.

The organisers are trying to provide an alternative for parents tired of run-of-the-mill children's activities dominated by kid's music; at Baby Loves Disco events, the Mickey Mouse Club and Barney are banned.

"It's quite fun. It's great for parents who have children and parents who like to dance, just to do something different," says Angita Stopa who is dancing with her daughter Yasmin.

Another parent, Bert Power, agrees that it's the right formula.

"We dance at home and I play records, like 70s, 80s, and they play exactly the same tracks here which is great, because the music is not just cheesy pop, it's right through all the genres," says Power. "It's music all the parents dance to as well."

Even his five-year-old daughter Cydney Power agrees. She says she "really likes" disco.

Other parents like the fact that they can get in some physical activity while hanging out with their kids.

"This is about as much exercise as I've had in a fortnight. Burn a few calories on the dance floor," says Jim Donaldson, who is reading a book to his three and a half year-old son Oscar in the chill-out zone.

Donaldson adds that Oscar also benefits from being put into new opportunities for social interaction.

"We try and get Oscar involved in as many social events as possible, get-togethers with other parents. He goes to nursery and he spends a lot of time at nursery with other kids, so he's pretty social that way anyway, but I suppose the more new environments you can get them involved in, the better," he says.

Baby Loves Disco is the brainchild of Heather Murphy, a Philadelphia woman who came up with the idea after she had her first child.

Tired of watching hours of mind-numbing "Elmo's World", she struck a deal with a local nightclub to hold a club night - during the day - for children under seven once a month.

It caught the attention of a New York producer, who brought it to the Big Apple, and then the pair rolled it out to 22 cities around the US.

A British entrepreneur, Naomi Timperley, brought the concept to Britain, and there are now events in cities around the country including London, Bristol, Brighton, Edinburgh and Manchester.

It's also spreading further afield, with franchises in Poland, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and other countries.

Competing events have also sprung up; in southeast London, the Albany performing arts centre holds its own, called Disco Dayz.

Tahira Latif, the organiser of Baby Loves Disco in London, says the events attract a certain kind of parent.

"The main thing is that they are all people who used to like to go out and club and dance and can't do that because they have small children so this is ideal because they can share their passions with their small children and do it during the daytime so it's not too late at night," says Latif.

But what about the health benefits?

Evidence suggests that children are a lot more physically inactive nowadays than they used to be, says Paul Ford, a senior lecturer in exercise physiology at University of East London.

Ford says that physical inactivity could become a problem in children as young as preschool age and continue all the way to adulthood.

He explains that a holistic approach should be used to boost children's fitness levels, including involving the whole family in physical activities.

Even though Ford says baby discos could potentially be just a gimmick, he adds that the key to getting children to be more active is by making it seem normal for youngsters.

"Hopefully it will become a habitual, normal activity for individuals. So if the method of delivery has to be via music and it works so be it, we need to find a way of boosting physical activity levels, in early childhood, certainly," he says.

Certainly for these youngsters, Baby Loves Disco has awoken the groove in them.

MADONNA, GWYNETH PALTROW and BOY GEORGE were among the guests checking out the VERSACE fall collection in Paris on Saturday.

Madonna arrived late, in true diva style, with her entourage of bodyguards.

Chelsea Clinton and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood also joined the crowd to see Donatella Versace's latest designs.

Not everyone is so impressed with Paris Fashion week however - PETA protestors took the opportunity to push their anti-fur message home, by storming the Versace catwalk. They waved a banner bearing the message 'fur kills' before security stepped in and removed them.

The show itself was full of bright colours and outrageous fabrics.

The Las Vegas style touches included hot-coloured stretch minis with geometric ribbon patterns and multi coloured sequin dresses.

The colours were mostly fluorescent or iridescent. Short and long dresses were plastered with crystals and sequin decorations.

Electric green draped dresses and a gown with electric green and pink embroidery probably pleased many saucy showgirls and stars.

STARS PAY HOMAGE TO SUPER MARIO

Madonna took the rare step of bringing her daughter Lourdes out in public when she joined other celebrities to celebrate the opening of a London exhibition by fashion photographer Mario Testino.

Five-year-old Lourdes features in at least one of Testino's photos of Madonna.

The mother and daughter mixed with a host of other stars including models Helena Christensen and Kate Moss, fashion designer Matthew Williamson and Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow at the launch at the National Portrait Gallery in London's West End last night.

The exhibition brings together more than 120 color and black-and-white pictures by Testino, who was Princess Diana's favorite fashion photographer.

Images taken of Diana shortly before she died will be shown alongside portraits of icons from fashion, film and music. There are also special sections devoted to images of Madonna, Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow.

NELSON MANDELA MEETS 'ALI' STAR WILL SMITH

US superstar WILL SMITH charmed South African fans at the weekend on his visit to the country for the premiere of 'ALI', which tells the story of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

Smith also met former president Nelson Mandela during the trip when he headed an auction of memorabilia from 'Ali' to raise funds for Mandela's charity. He entertained crowds by taking over from the auctioneer and even joked that he did a better job of it himself.

Boundlessly energetic and effervescent Smith won more hearts when he announced that he plans to move to South Africa.

"I just love it here, I've been looking for a house, you know spend a couple of months out of every year, I have just got to get my wife here to look around. She is in Australia working on 'the Matrix 2 and 3'. As soon as I can get here we are going to see if we can find a place."

Smith has received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Ali, which focuses on the boxer's prime, from his Cassius Clay days in 1964 when he wins the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston, through his return to glory 10 years later as he reclaims the championship from George Foreman at the 'Rumble in the Jungle' in Zaire.

The film also looks at his friendship with Malcolm X, his time in the wasteland as a Vietnam draft resister and his struggles with Muslim chauvinism in relation to the women in his life.

Smith was accompanied to South Africa by director Michael Mann.

The film also stars Oscar nominated Jon Voight, unrecognizably made-up as sportscaster Howard Cosell and Jamie Foxx in a surprisingly rich turn as troubled Ali aide Drew "Bundini" Brown.

Ali has special significance for the South African film industry as a number of South Africans worked on the film when parts of it was shot in Maputo.

Guests at LIZA MINNELLI's fourth wedding said she danced at the altar as a bevy of celebrities helped her and producer DAVID GEST celebrate their nuptials.

The crowd outside Marble Collegiate Church screamed as the newlyweds slipped out a side door.

A limousine waited to take them to a reception with an eclectic and glittering guest list.

It featured such showbiz legends A-list stars as actors

ANTHONY HOPKINS and MICHAEL DOUGLAS, rocker ELTON JOHN and GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA.

Others arriving in limos, Rolls-Royces and even yellow

cabs were celebrities such as JOAN COLLINS, ROBERTA FLACK and ROBERT GOULET.

"This was one of the most thrilling weddings I've ever been to," veteran actor MICKEY ROONEY told reporters and photographers as fans watched from across the street.

Elizabeth Taylor and actress Marisa Berenson were maids of honour. Jackson and his brother TITO, childhood friends of Gest, were best men. The bridal party was to include actors Tony Franciosa and Robert Wagner, actresses Mia Farrow, Janet Leigh, and Gina Lollobrigida, and singers Petula Clark and Michael Mcdonald.

Curious New Yorkers observed from rooftops and apartment windows.

Saturday's wedding extravaganza had promised more excess than Minnelli's first three combined.

"Liza's Nutty Nuptials," proclaimed a headline in the New York Post.

The bride and groom were introduced by Jackson last year when Minnelli appeared in Gest's television production of 'Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special.'

Minnelli was wed previously to entertainer Peter Allen (1967-72), producer Jack Haley Jr. (1974-79), and stage manager/sculptor Mark Gero (1979-92).

Minnelli, who turned 56 on Tuesday, will honeymoon in Thailand. Afterward, the daughter of Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli will launch a European tour that kicks off with five shows in London.

For Minnelli, the wedding marks a personal comeback. Early last year, she nearly died after a battle with encephalitis. She was severely overweight and worried she might never sing again.

The bride was expected to be 90 pounds (40 kilograms) lighter when she put on the long, custom-made gown. And she credited her future husband, 48, with getting her back into shape -which has not always been easy for Minnelli, winner of an Academy Award, an Emmy, two Golden Globes and three Tony Awards.

The marriage, at the 147-year-old Marble Collegiate Church on New York's Fifth Avenue, was the first for Gest, 48.

In an interview with Britain's OK! magazine, which bought exclusive rights to cover the wedding, Broadway producer Gest said he and Minnelli planned to adopt four children.

He told the magazine: "We are going to spend half the year living in France just outside Paris, where we will raise our children. "We are adopting four children... of all races, a black child, a white child... it doesn't matter at all.

WINONA RYDER ARRAIGNMENT

Winona Ryder says she's not guilty but a judge in Beverly Hills says there's enough evidence against her to go to trial.

The Oscar nominated actress showed up for an arraignment on Friday where she pled not guilty to charges of grand theft, commercial burglary, felony vandalism and a drug violation.

Ryder was stopped by security guards at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills in December after allegedly trying to walk out with some 6-thousand U-S dollars worth of goods.

She was also allegedly spotted cutting security tags off a number of items whilst in a changing room.

After being stopped by security - guards found prescription pain killers in her handbag that were not prescribed to her.

Other items found on her person that she is alleged to have stolen are numerous women's hair accessories, handbags and various items of women's clothing.

The actress's attorney - Mark Garagos - is accusing the District Attorneys office of being 'overzealous' and picking on Ryder who is currently free on $20-thousand U-S bail.

The District Attorney is already expecting Ryder's attorney to file a motion for recusal - which, if approved, would mean another court would hear her case.

Garagos believes this court is pre-prejudiced against the actress.

The court information officer says recusals are not rare - but are rarely approved.

Ryder's next court date is July 15th.

JENNIFER LOPEZ LAUNCHES FRAGRANCE

Singer, actress, dancer and fashion designer Jennifer Lopez hopes to have yet another hit this summer - with the launch of her first fragrance Glow by JLO in New York.

To celebrate the launch, the pop queen and perfume-makers Lancaster Group were joined by 200 guests for a lavish dinner and private party in a private apartment on the 90th Floor of Manhattan's Trump World Tower.

The event went off with a bang, as a massive fireworks display lit up the Manhattan sky with the words Glow by JLO.

The launch marks the star's first foray into the fragrance market. This first product - fragrance, bottle and packaging - has been developed with creative input from Jennifer herself and she will feature in the advertising.

COMEDY HERO IS STAR STRUCK

Mike Myers' place in comedy and Hollywood history has been set in stone.

On Wednesday the 'Austin Powers' creator choked back tears as a dream came true when he unveiled his own star on the Hollywood Boulevard.

Fittingly sited outside the Love Boutique - an erotic goods store - Myers unveiled his star in the company of Dreamworks boss Jeffrey Katzenberg and his on-screen Number Two Robert Wagner.

On hand, too, for the unveiling was Mike's wife Robin and his mother, Alice, among other family members.

Myers beloved Father, Eric, died in 1991 from complications with Alzheimers.

Myers was born in 1963 in Scarborough, Canada to British parents.

This probably helps explain his love of all things British.

On the day he graduated for high school he auditioned and got into the famed comedy improvisation group - Second City.

From there he moved on to star on Saturday Night Live for six years.

During his tenure with the late night comedy show he created some of the comedy world's most recognized characters including Wayne and Garth, and Dieter the German talk show host.

By the time 'Wayne's World' became a box office success Myers had left Saturday Night Live and penned a little script in three weeks for a movie called 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.'

His salary has leapt from just about nothing in his early comedy days to 25-million U-S dollars plus 21% of the gross from 'Austin Powers in Goldmember'.

In total - his films have grossed nearly 750-million U-S dollars to date.

Now that's something to swing about, baby!

'N SYNC BEGINS NASA TRAINING FOR SPACE TRIP

'N Sync singer Lance Bass is a step closer to his dream of becoming a space tourist, after winning the endorsement of NASA and other space agencies Tuesday.

After 1½ months of debating Bass' qualifications, NASA and the other space station partners signed off on his trip.

In July, the Russian Space Agency submitted Bass' name for one of three seats on a rocket scheduled to blast off from Kazakhstan in the autumn.

A panel representing NASA and the space agencies of Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada signed off Tuesday on Bass' participation after weeks of telephone conferences to discuss his background and qualifications.

Despite the singer's on-off status over the past several months, NASA politely agreed to accept Bass for a week of space station training at Johnson Space Center, to help his bid to fly to the international space station this autumn.

Bass is learning alongside a Russian and a Belgian assigned to the lifeboat-swapping mission scheduled for a Kazakhstan liftoff on 28th October.

The three men arrived on Monday after working together at cosmonaut headquarters in Star City, Russia.

If he makes it into orbit, the pop star would become the world's third paying space tourist and the youngest person ever in space.

The stodgy, middle-aged NASA is jumping on the 'N Sync singer's bandwagon, and upping its kid-appeal in the process- even though not everyone is thrilled about Russia's bid to send a 23-year-old with barely a high school education to the international space station .

Bass may not be the most scientifically savvy or most experienced guy to go through space training. But he certainly is one of the most artistic and definitely the most appealing to the hard-to-impress, under-20 crowd.

But before Bass can be considered a fully-fledged member of Russia's next crew, TV producers need to wrap up a deal with the cash-strapped Russian space programme.

Unlike the first two space tourists, California businessman Dennis Tito and South African Internet tycoon Mark Shuttleworth, Bass is rounding up corporate sponsors to pay his fare.

A round-trip ticket to the space station on a Russian spacecraft costs as much as 20 million dollars (US). Haggling over the deal has been going on for months.

A Los Angeles production company has plans for a TV show following Bass' space adventures.

But Bass is likely to feel his plans are going well after Tuesday's news.

NASA spokesperson Debra Rahn said "They've agreed that Mr Bass meets the criteria and is suitable as a crew member"

The recommendation has been forwarded to a board of high-ranking space agency officials who will review Bass' candidacy and issue a final ruling in September, Rahn said.

BUFFY TIES THE KNOT

'Buffy' star Sarah Michelle Geller, 25, and her long term love Freddy Prince Junior, 26, tied the knot yesterday on a Mexican clifftop.

The pair, who met five years ago on the set of horror spoof 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', got engaged last April and were rumoured to have married in Las Vegas in July.

Following much media speculation, the real wedding took place at a secluded estate near the exclusive Puerto Vallarta resort in Mexico.

Kim Cattrall scotched rumours that she is planning to leave the hit TV show 'Sex and the City.'

Speaking at a Paris press conference to launch the series on dvd/video and the book spin off, Cattrall who plays the sexy man-eater Samantha, said the press reports of her departure were "fiction" and she remained committed to the award-winning HBO show.

Cattrall, 42, added that she believed that the comedy drama, based the lives and loves of four New York women, could change America's uptight attitudes to sex.

The show began its fifth season in July in America.

In the new series, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) begins to focus on herself, her friends and her career. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) wonders what her life will be like after her first monogamous relationship.

Charlotte (Kirstin Davis) comes to terms with being separated and single again and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) copes with changes brought on by being a single mother.

The producers of the Emmy-award winning series had to grapple with the news of leading lady Sarah Jessica Parker's real-life pregnancy in the beginning of filming the upcoming season. She is expecting her first child, with actor husband Matthew Broderick, in the autumn.

They decided not to write the pregnancy into her show. This season has been dubbed a mini-season, as it has been condensed to eight shows.

Cynthia Nixon is also pregnant in real-life - she is expecting her second child with English professor Danny Mozes at the end of the year.

In the meantime, Kim Cattrall has come up with her own spin off from the series - a self help book with her husband Matthew Levinson titled 'Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm.'

JACKO GETS WACKO WITH BABY

Michael Jackson said he made a "terrible mistake" by holding his young son over a fourth-floor balcony railing at a Berlin hotel, thrilling fans who wanted to see the child but shocking many people who watched on television.

German and U.S. television news programs repeatedly broadcast footage of the reclusive pop star's brief appearance Tuesday at the Hotel Adlon, while images of the stunt dominated the UK newspapers this morning (20 NOV).

The boy had what appeared to be a white cloth over his head as Jackson held the child with one arm around his upper body over the edge of the hotel's iron balcony.

The child, wearing a baby blue jumper, was the singer's third and youngest, Prince Michael II, said Antje Sigesmund, a spokeswoman for the Bambi Entertainment Award ceremony, which Jackson is attending in Berlin.

On Tuesday night, Jackson issued a written statement saying he had gotten carried away when fans below the window asked to see the baby.

"I made a terrible mistake," he said. "I got caught up in the excitement of the moment. I would never intentionally endanger the lives of my children."

Dozens of fans had gathered outside the hotel, just opposite Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate, and security had to remove some from the lobby.

Several carried banners, including one that said "Save the Kids," with drawings of children's faces, a reference to Jackson's philanthropy. Another said "Really good to see you."

Jackson, wearing a bright red shirt, smiled and waved to the fans, at one point tossing a small white towel to the crowd below. The singer then went inside and retrieved the toddler, using one arm to hold the boy out over the iron rail.

Fans cheered as the pop star appeared with the child, but Jackson quickly retreated into his hotel room.

The Chicago-based advocacy group Prevent Child Abuse America criticized Jackson's behavior, though it said the boy did not appear to be harmed.

"It is a painful reminder that even the most well-intentioned among us sometimes act in ways that put children in danger of being abused or neglected," said A. Sidney Johnson, president and CEO of the group.

Little is known about Prince Michael II. People Magazine reported in August that he was six months old. The magazine, citing an anonymous friend, said the boy was not adopted and did not identify the mother.

The singer also has two children with ex-wife Debbie Rowe: a 5-year-old boy, also named Prince Michael, and a 4-year-old girl, Paris. The couple divorced in 1999.

In Berlin, Jackson was taking a break from a California courtroom where he testified last week in a $21 million lawsuit claiming he backed out of concerts. He arrived in Berlin to pick up a Bambi for life achievement

Thursday.

He is to attend a benefit for homeless children and a charity auction where he will put a jacket and hat on the block Wednesday.

At a press conference this moring where Jackson himself was not present, Patricia Riekel, editor in chief of celebrity magazine "Bunte" spoke up for the star saying:

The actress, singer, fashion label owner and perfurmier, who announced that she was engaged on Diane Sawyer's national, prime-time American TV show (ABC-13NOV02), was hoping everyone would forget.

"I don't know," she mused, "I thought maybe when we announced it that people would let it go but it doesn't seem like that.

"Do I regret saying it?" she continues, "No it's true and it's a wonderful thing and we are very happy."

Even before the announcement, the pair were being tailed around Los Angeles by photographers desperate to capture them kissing - something J Lo attempted to send up in her video for 'Jenny From The Block'.

She said Ben proposed in a "traditional, but very spectacular way" - and has since explained that he transformed his parents' house in Boston with candles and a carpet of petals before producing the large diamond ring.

The couple met last winter while shooting the movie 'Gigli,' in which Lopez plays a gangster sent to supervise a thug, played by Affleck, in a kidnapping.

She describes Affleck as "brilliantly smart," charming and affectionate. "My mother loves Ben," she adds.

CHICAGO GOES WEST

The razzle dazzle of the jazz age was recalled on the red carpet of Tinseltown on Tuesday at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zelwegger and Richard Gere were all on top form to promote their newest film - the Bob Fosse musical 'Chicago.'

The movie has been some 25-plus years in the making and each of these stars say the time is ripe for the nitty-gritty musical about love and hate and All that Jazz.

The film has already had it's world premiere in London - but the woman everyone was hoping to see was unable to make an appearance. Zeta-Jones is several months pregnant with her second child to husband Michael Douglas.

Douglas and Zeta-Jones arrived arm in arm but her husband quickly made his way into the theatre to allow the limelight to fall on his wife of two years.

Catherine made her stage debut in 42nd Street in London's West End and this is a role she has wanted to play for some time.

The 33-year-old mega star plays the role of Velma Kelley, a lauded nightclub singer who find herself on murderers' row when she kills her adulterous husband.

Despite some first day jitters - all her cast members agree that she will bring down the house.

Apparently - at one juncture - prior to filming there were plans to have Janet Jackson provide the actual voice for Zeta-Jones when they recorded the soundtrack - but she so wowed the director and producers - that the plans

were quickly scrapped and the film is 100 percent Catherine.

So, too, is Roxie Hart - played by Renee Zellwegger - a woman who's also killed her husband.

Zellwegger who famously plumped up for the title role in 'Bridget Jones's Diary' is a sleek and slim version of herself having danced and sung her way through several months of filming in Toronto.

Taking on the role of the requisite sleazy lawyer is Richard Gere.

He says besides the wonderful script - he was thrilled to teach his feet to tap dance.

The film is directed by newcomer Rob Marshall who is known in the theatre and film world not only for his finesse behind the camera - but for his choreography skills.

All the cast and crew are convinced this film will make him a star.

That remains to be seen - but it is certain he has star-pulling power.

Besides the stars who headline the film - Marshall also signed singers Mya and Queen Latifah as well as Lucy Liu and silver screen regular John C Reilly.

2002 has been a tumultuous year for Britney Spears.

The news that she has been fired by drinks giant Pepsi was the final indignity which began with disappointing sales of her third album and poor reviews of her big-screen debut in 'Crossroads.'

Then a world tour turned into a public relations disaster.

In Mexico the press turned on her after she "flipped them the finger", fans chanted at her and she was booed.

The 20-year-old star enraged thousands of young fans who had waited for hours in the cold, by failing to go on a walkabout or sign autographs before the start of the movie.

So, could it be that the once pristine Britney is losing her once Midas touch with her fans?

Some in the British press have suggested that the sex kitten image she has adopted in the videos for 'I'm A Slave 4 U' and 'Overprotected' may be alienating her young fans, and hurting her album sales.

Whether or not her young followers are turned off by her erotic new look, she can certainly ill afford to upset her loyal fans base again.

Then there were problems with her Manhattan restaurant Nyla, which resulted in her breaking off her involvement at the beginning of December after just five months.

Rainbow flags, signs supporting sexual diversity, music and banging drums accompanied hundreds of marchers on Saturday through the streets of Havana to commemorate the International Anti-Homophobia day.

"Home is love, respect, inclusion for a family free of homophobia and transphobia. We are directing this message to all families," came the message from Mariela Castro, the Director of Cuba's National Centre for Sexual Education, one of the main organisers of the march.

It is the sixth consecutive year gay rights supporters took to the streets of Havana and marched alongside Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cuban president Raul Castro.

Before he became president, there were no gay pride parades allowed on the island.

May 17 has been designated as World Day to Fight Against Homophobia because on this date in 1990 the World Health Organisation eliminated homosexuality and bisexuality from its list of mental diseases.

Saturday's parade began on Havana's famed seaside Malecon Avenue and travelled along 23rd street, one of the busiest and most important thoroughfares in the Caribbean capital.

British auctioneers Christie's announced that they are to sell eighty of Princess Diana's dresses in New York. All the money raised by the much heralded auction, which will take place in June, will go to two charities which research cancer and AIDS treatments in the United States and Britain and have been chosen by Diana. For the first time The Princess of Wales has launched a libel suit against a British Sunday newspaper which this weekend suggested she personally would benefit from the sale. Christies in London displayed five of the dresses which will be auctioned on June the twenty fifth. Diana, Princess of Wales has agreed to pay compensation to a former royal housemaid who said she was unfairly dismissed. Lawyers announced the settlement during a four-minute tribunal hearing in which Sylvia McDermott sued the British Princess for unfair dismissal. Hectic last-minute trading between lawyers representing the two parties resulted in a settlement, shortly before the start of an industrial tribunal hearing in London. Sylvia McDermott was dismissed from Kensington Palace last September after nine years' employment. This case is not the first time that relations between the Princess and her staff have been strained. In the past she has had high profile rifts with Geoffrey Crawford, her press secretary, and with her nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

McDermott joined the household of Prince Charles and Diana in 1987 and stayed with Diana when the couple split up in 1992. Her duties included dusting and cleaning the royal apartments, and some work overseas. She was laid off last September after, according to news reports, being told twice by Diana that her work was unsatisfactory.

Diana, Princess of Wales visited the sick at Saint Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London. She came to give support to the Cosmic Charity, an organisation which specialises in raising money for life-saving equipment in pediatric units. Hospital officials and charity workers offered her a warm greeting, but the visit followed a day which Diana is said to have found harrowing. Britain's highest circulation newspaper, The Sun, published a front page report romantically linking the princess with a London Heart Surgeon. The tabloid newspaper's front page story carried the headline: "Dr Dishy's Dinner Dates With Di." It quoted a waiter at Giovanni's restaurant in New Denham, Buckinghamshire, as saying the Princess had, twice, dined in candlelight with local surgeon Doctor Hasnet Khan.

On the second day of her charity trip to Pakistan, Britain's Princess Diana toured the cancer hospital she's helping to raise funds for. The Princess is launching a 17-million dollar appeal in aid of the hospital built by Pakistan's former cricketing captain Imran Khan. Khan and his British-born wife Jemima accompanied the Princess as she met patients and hospital staff. The hospital - built in 1994 - was partly destroyed by a terrorist bomb last April - which killed six people. The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in the Pakistani city of Lahore was built three years ago with charity money raised by national cricket hero Imran Khan. Khan set up the hospital fund in memory of his mother who'd died of cancer.

Princess Diana rounding off the first day of a visit to Washington D-C by attending an American Red Cross gala at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Diana's trip to Washington stems from her involvement in an anti-land mine campaign launched by the International Committee of the Red Cross. Diana had begun her day by meeting with Elizabeth Dole, the head of the American Red Cross. The two joined forces to appeal for a worldwide ban on the use of landmines.

After the speech, Diana visited a landmine victim at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Brazilian Rui Xavier DaSilva was injured in May while working for the Organization of American States along the Honduran/Nicaraguan border. Mr DaSilva was removing landmines when he stepped on one. He lost a leg and a foot.

In an historic act of charity, Diana, Princess of Wales, is giving away 79 of her dresses all of which will go under the hammer at a charity auction at Christie's in New York on June 25. Proceeds for the fund raiser will benefit cancer and AIDS sufferers both in the United States and the United Kingdom. Twenty of those dresses have already made it to New York. Christie's auctioneers will conduct the sale on a non-profit basis on behalf of the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund and the AIDS Crisis Trust. The proceeds from the event will benefit associated American and British charities to relieve suffering from cancer and AIDS. Diana's dresses were made by British designers between 1981 and 1996, and include creations by Catherine Walker, Victor Edelstein and the Emanuels.

Her companion Dodi Fayed has been confirmed dead as a result of the accident, and some reports say the Princess has died too. Police say the crash occurred shortly after midnight in a tunnel along the Seine River, while paparazzi photographers followed the couple's car. The pair were in Paris rounding off a holiday in the exclusive resort of St. Tropez, the latest of several they have taken together in recent weeks. French police said Princess Diana, probably the world's most photographed woman, was being treated in the intensive care unit of the Salpetriere hospital, in the east of the city. Officials were unable to comment on her precise condition. French radio said she suffered concussion and a broken arm. The driver of the car was also killed. The fourth person in the car, one of the princess's bodyguards, was injured and freed from the wreckage in a road tunnel under the wealthy Eighth District Several press photographers were taken into custody for questioning after the crash, police said. A badly damaged motorcycle was taken away from the accident site by police after the crash.

Scotland Yard officers arrested Paul Burrell at his Chester home in connection with missing clothes belonging to the late Princess and a 500 thousand (500,000) pound (750,000 US dollar) jewel-encrusted model boat. Officers arrived at Burrell's cottage and conducted a 12-hour search. Mr Burrell, 42, who was Diana's friend and confidant for more than 10 years, was in the house with his wife and two sons.
