LEADIN:

Tourists visiting the Berlin Wall are stepping back in time using augmented reality.

They are using an app called Time Traveler - that creates videos of historical events when a smartphone or tablet is pointed in the direction of a monument or building.

STORYLINE

It is August 15th 1961.

Conrad Schumann, a 19-year old People's Army soldier from East Germany, is standing guard at the newly built barrier separating East and West Berlin.

On the other side of the barrier a crowd has gathered. They are calling for the soldiers on the opposite side to defect.

Suddenly Schumann starts running and after a few steps he is next to the barbed wire separating East and West Berlin.

He takes a leap, machine-gun in hand, and escapes to the Western side - and with that action creates one of the most enduring images of the Berlin Wall.

The photo of Schumann in mid-air, taken by Peter Leibing, became world famous and has been used for decades to illustrate those first confusing days when the East German authorities surprised the world by cordoning off the West Berlin.

The temporary barrier of barbed wire soon became a wall, with guard towers and a so-called death zone controlled by snipers and landmines.

Now, 25 years after the wall fell on November 9, 1989, visitors to the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse can use a new app to get a feel for Schumann's escape, and 9 other events from the 28 years that the wall divided the German capital.

The Timetraveler app, developed by Robin Hardenberg in cooperation with Munich-based Metaio, uses augmented reality technology to show the historical video and photos on smartphones and tablets.

With the help of GPS the app guides the visitors to 10 sites.

Once there, the user clicks "activate augmented reality" and sees a regular feed from the camera on the screen.

But shortly after a video or photo will appear on the screen, superimposed on the current live feed, creating a mix of old and new video.

Standing at the viewing platform at Bernauer Strasse, Hardenberg explains:

"Time Traveller is an app that allows you to experience history at the place where it happened. Here for example we are at the Berlin Wall strip and you can see what happened when the Church of Reconciliation was destroyed, it is a kind of symbol of the godlessness of this place. And what is special is that you see it here, you don't see it as a film on the iPad, but rather you see it at the place where it happened. It is like a window to the past."

The app is available for 1.79 euro 9around USD $2) both on iTunes and on Google Play.

The Berlin Wall once encircled the whole of West Berlin.

It started off as a simple barrier made from barbed wire.

But throughout the years the construction was reinforced.

A concrete wall was built in 1965, and soon after a second wall inside the East German territory, which created the so-called death strip between the two walls.

The final version of the wall was built in 1975 and ran for 150 kilometres (93 miles) around West Berlin.

It was 3.6 meters (11.8 feet) high and made up of thousands of slabs of reinforced concrete.

On November 9, 1989, after months of protests and political changes in both Moscow and Berlin and confusion surrounding new travel directives for East German citizens, the wall was breached and then opened.

After the fall, most of the wall was broken apart and taken away.

Today there are only a few places left in Berlin where visitors can come close to the original wall structure.

The Bernauer Strasse memorial is one of the hot spots for the Wall tourists, and one of the reasons Hardenberg decided to focus the app on that area.

"It is really for tourists but also for anyone who is interested in the history of Berlin," he says.

"The Berlin wall has almost disappeared from the city, but here you can actually see what has happened in the past. You can see people escaping from windows and you can see how the wall was built."

Most of the video clips show escapes in the early days of the wall when people could cross the barrier by jumping out of their windows.

One shows 77-year old Frida Schulze dangling from her window.

Above, in her apartment is an East German official trying to pull her back.

Below a man is pulling her leg, trying to help her escape to West Berlin below.

In the end Schulze drops down onto the pavement and makes her way into the Western sector.

Another clip shows the Rosin family throwing their belongings out of the window as East German officials arrive to ask them to vacate their apartment.

According to the Germany Federal Commission dealing with the documents and records of the former East German State, at least 136 people died trying to cross the Berlin wall between 1961 and 1989.

But today the scenes around Bernauer Strasse are more serene.

Tourists wander around the memorial, getting a feeling for what life was like in a divided city.

Anna Harlin and Tim Bergdorf are visiting Berlin from Stockholm, Sweden.

They are trying out the Timetraveler app for the first time.

Harlin says she is impressed:

"I really like the app actually. It is great and it would be wonderful if you could work it everywhere, just put it on all the houses and see what happened there, like for 40 years ago," she says.

Bergdorf says the app gave him a better understanding of life behind the wall.

"It gave me a bit more of a better understanding of what actually happened here. Really interesting and really cool," he says.

Over 2000 people visit the 220-metre long (722 foot) stretch of the Berlin Wall each day according to Berlin Wall Memorial Foundation.

On average a visitor spends 70 minutes here.

"The Berlin Wall is a very important tourists attraction in Berlin. In general tourists also come to Berlin for the history of the city," says Hanna Berger, the Berlin Wall Foundation spokesperson.

Berger says the foundation is a positive for people developing new ways to experience the wall.

"I think this is helping," she says.

"We also think that this is good way to inform. It obviously depends on what the app shows, but in general it is good to use these new technologies, I think it is especially useful for the younger generation."

In addition to the augmented reality part of the Timetraveler app, visitors can also read information about the different points they are visiting.

The app shows the end of the story about Conrad Schumann who leaped to freedom.

He spent his whole life in the West but suffered from depression, despite building a new life there and in 1998, almost ten years after the fall of the Wall he committed suicide.

Another sad end to another sad story with the Berlin Wall as a permanent backdrop.

David Hasselhoff has put his name behind a campaign to preserve one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin Wall.

And in Germany, The Hoff's name carries weight.

The American actor best known for starring in "Knight Rider" and "Baywatch" is fondly remembered by many Germans for releasing a schmaltzy song called "Looking for Freedom" shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Hasselhoff said on Sunday that a real estate developer's plans to move part of the wall was "like tearing down an Indian burial ground" because of the great historical importance it had.

"This last piece of the wall is really sacred. It's the last memorial to the people who died and to the perseverance of freedom," he told a news conference in Berlin.

Hasselhoff drew crowds of fans as he joined protesters at the remaining part of the wall, known as the East Side Gallery.

Standing in the back of a bus, that served as a makeshift stage, Hasselhoff sang "Looking for Freedom," with many in the crowd singing along.

Berliners have rallied against the plan they say is part of a wider trend of steamrollering Berlin's tumultuous history to make way for gleaming developments in the now unified capital.

"I hope that the (Berlin) Senate realises that this is about much more than just some apartments for a few people. It is about preserving the city's atmosphere," said protester Andreas Baummueller.

Seventeen years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall, city officials and artists are locked in a battle to save one of the largest remaining sections of the historic monument from property developers, pollution, and vandalism.

The East Side Gallery, a three-quarter-mile stretch in Berlin's Friedrichshain neighbourhood, features the work of over a hundred international artists and includes iconic images like the embrace between East German leader Erich Honecker and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.

This popular tourist spot is in danger of disappearing altogether because of deteriorating walls, pollution, and tourists who like to pick-off pieces for souvenirs.

September's planned restoration is put at 1.8 (m) million US dollars, a figure that will increase depending on how much of the wall and its artwork can be saved.

Kani Alavi, heads up the East Side Gallery's Artists' association who fight to preserve the wall.

Alavi, an Iranian-born artist who contributed a mural in the 1990s says that politicians have to "act soon" to keep the Gallery "authentic".

"We have to act now and we have to use the finances we have received from several sources; the government, the city of Berlin, private sponsors and Lotto."

Another obstacle to restoration is property development planned for the area.

Manfred K�hne, a city official says: "We have to coordinate the construction of a park, the reconstruction of the wall and the repainting of the paintings at the wall. The reconstruction of the wall and the repainting is delayed because we had to move some old houses from the park area."

The wall's western side was covered in graffiti during the decades after the barrier was erected on Aug. 13, 1961. Parts of the eastern side, to which the East Side Gallery belongs, were painted only after communism collapsed.

The exhibition 'Voices of Dissent: Art in the GDR 1976-1989' traces the subtle - and sometimes obvious - ways artists tried to show their opposition to the Communist state.

The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was established in Soviet-occupied parts of Germany after the Second World War and continued until after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Most parts of a citizens' life were controlled by the state and the communist party – and art was no exception.

Artists were required to create works which suited the ideology of the communist system, preferably with motives that showed the heroism of the working class.

But a number of artists in the GDR refused to conform and created pieces which ignored the required propaganda, or was even blatantly opposed to the regime.

An exhibition showcasing the works by leading oppositional artists is now opening in Berlin.

Hans-Hendrik Grimmling is one such dissident artist included in the exhibit.

After refusing to adapt his paintings to state standards and participating in several artist actions, he came to the attention of the secret police - the Stasi.

"I was not allowed to travel, not even in the Eastern Bloc. My exhibitions were closed down," says Grimmling.

"The seal around me was getting very close, very present. The flow of information stopped. I had a lot of invitations to go to France, but I was not allowed. The feeling of tightness was getting very close and schizophrenic. It was like an infection in us all. And as an artist you are always looking for ways the get healthy and whole again."

Art played an important role in the GDR.

Social realist paintings depicting the glory of the state, the heroism of workers and the enlightenment of the leaders hung in every state building.

Many artists made a good living creating such pictures, others stayed apolitical and kept their head down, some challenged the regime and its artistic norms.

"Of course, many of the artists just painted still life pictures and landscapes and stayed out of politics," explains co-curator Christoph Tannert.

"But on the other side, there were the subculture artists that used a very clear language, either against the aesthetic norms of the artists union, with art that used crazy forms and expressive touches or by using realism and depicting themes that were considered taboo."

The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was established in Soviet-occupied parts of Germany in 1959.

The state was modeled on the Soviet Union with an all-powerful politburo and secret police.

Showing signs of dissent was not easy.

Many dissident artists had to spend time in jail, others were forbidden to travel outside their home cities and most were under constant surveillance.

Instead of creating obviously dissenting art, many painted pictures with codes and hints, or focused on the inner life of the citizens, instead of the politics of the state.

"When you walk through the exhibition you will not see many works that are obviously political," says co-curator, Eugen Blume.

"Most of them are using symbolism and are more concerned with existential questions as with the politics of the GDR. That is what distinguishes the quality of this art, that is concerned with the state of the soul."

Grimmling was finally allowed to emigate to West Germany in 1986 under a program where the west paid to have dissidents released and deported.

He says he still carries his time behind the 'Iron Curtain' with him.

"Life continues. Is something wasted in us? Can we use that experience when starting something new today? I think so," says Grimmling.

"I think that even though the time was horrible I cannot pretend it did not happen. I think that I get the force in my pictures from that time."

The 'Voices of Dissent: Art in the GDR 1976-1989', opens 16 July at the Martin Gropius Bau Museum in Berlin and runs till 26 September.

One day ahead of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the "Falling Walls Conference", an international historical science conference held in Berlin as a part of the anniversary celebrations.

Merkel stressed that "in the long run, the human urge for freedom cannot be oppressed."

"The human desire to determine one's own fate ended the inhuman division of Europe and the Cold War," she said, reflecting on the historical importance of the November 9th 1989 anniversary.

"Freedom opens up new world. He who can think and research freely is awarded with new perspectives, new ways of thinking and the freedom to break new ground," she told the audience.

Merkel, 60, grew up in East Germany.

Official celebrations to mark the fall of the wall will conclude in Berlin on Sunday.

A 15-kilometre (nine-mile) chain of lighted balloons along the former border will be released into the air early Sunday evening - around the time on November 9, 1989 when a garbled announcement by a senior communist official set off the chain of events that brought down the Cold War's most potent symbol.

Thousands of people gathered on Sunday evening in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate for an open air event held as part of celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the night the Berlin Wall fell.

The event was attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other officials, and performers included English musician Peter Gabriel.

A million people were expected to attend Sunday's festivities in Berlin, which included the open-air party at the city's Brandenburg Gate and the release of hundreds of helium-filled balloons strung along a 15-kilometre (9-mile) stretch of the former border.

At least 138 people died at the Wall during its 28-year existence, and hundreds more were jailed for trying to escape.

On the night of November 9, 1989, thousands of East Berliners streamed through the once-closed border crossings, after communist authorities caved in to mounting pressure and relaxed travel restrictions that had prevented their citizens from going to the west for decades.

The fall of the Wall was the climax of weeks of popular protests, spurred by changes that had already taken place elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

ITALIAN DIRECTOR FRANCESCO ROSI HONOURED IN BERLIN

Italian director Francesco Rosi was honoured for his lifetime achievement with a Golden Bear special award on Thursday evening (14 FEB 08) at the Berlin film festival.

The festival's top award was given to the veteran filmmaker for his contribution to Italian cinema.

His career has seen him focus on the political, economic and intellectual development of his home country.

Rosi's international breakthrough came with "Salvatore Giuliano," about the death of a Sicilian separatist-turned-bandit.

During his long career he has received awards at Europe's leading festivals including Berlin, Cannes and Venice.

To celebrate his honour the festival is showing 13 of Rosi's films.

An exhibition is also being held in the German capital dedicated to the highly acclaimed director.

It contains photographs from Rosi's private collection and documents the major stages of his career.

It was the war that should have ended all wars.

It was the first modern war, the first industrial war and the First World War.

Almost 100 years ago, millions of lives were lost as nations from around the world came to fight in the fields of Europe.

A new exhibition at the German Historical Museum seeks to explain the events leading up to the war, the war itself and the aftermath.

Around 500 objects are show, ranging from oil paintings of soldiers, European royalty and anti-war demonstrations to weapons and historical documents.

The head of the Museum, Alexander Koch, explains:

"We want to show people how this war changed the world and how the effects of the war can still be felt today," he says

"This war has something to tell each and every one of us and that is why it is so important to put it in relation to what we have here and today."

Visitors to the exhibition are faced with images of unimaginable suffering and battlefield weaponry.

"In the centre is this exhibition is the tremendous violence that made this war the original catastrophe of the 20th century. And we can feel the effects still today," Koch says.

During the last few years the debate over which country bears the larges burden for the outbreak of the war has intensified, not just in academia but also increasingly in political circles.

Koch says that the exhibition tries to show the war events as even-handedly to allow visitors to make up their own mind.

But the exhibition will also be accompanied by an ambitious programme of speakers, debates and discussions where the issue of responsibility for the war will be fully explored.

"We thematise the question of the responsibility of the war here in the exhibition," he says.

The First World War is still a sensitive subject in Germany.

But Koch says, the war is still a major part of the collective German consciousness, something that has shaped the German society of today.

"Many families have their own stories about the war from an family member or friend. Stories about different fronts or about what the war was like from the home front. So this war has still today the unmovable place in the collective mind. And that is what we have to show here with this exhibition, he says.

The World War I exhibition opens to the public on May 29 and runs until November 30.

Entry costs 8 euro ($11 US Dollars) but entry is free for everyone under the age of 18.

From New York to Rome and Mexico, a new exhibition in Berlin is focussing on souvenir art and works made while travelling.

More than 100 pictures spanning five centuries of travel are on show at the "We're off then" exhibition at the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings).

STORYLINE:

Summer is approaching in the northern hemisphere, with many people planning a holiday to relax.

For centuries, we've been inspired by foreign lands and cultures.

Before smartphones and cameras, that fascination has led to some picking up a pen or brush to capture the peculiarities of their journey.

Now an exhibition in Berlin has gathered more than 100 prints and pictures showing travelling as art.

The "We're off then" exhibition shows early prints of pilgrims using travel as a way to find enlightenment; pictures of people using boats, trains and automobiles to expand their horizons.

"To travel has always been an important theme for people. It starts with people using their feet to explore the areas around their homes," says Ina Dinter, the curator of the exhibition.

"Travelling is about answering the questions 'where do I belong in the world? Where is home and where is away?'"

The exhibition covers everything from water colour paintings from the German enlightenment period to pop art prints from the last few decades.

Some of the prints were sold to tourists at the locations they depicted as a souvenir, long before Instagram and Facebook.

"The printed graphic is an important medium, just like printed books or illustrated works. They are multipliable, serially produced, pictures," says Heinrich Schulze Altcappenberg, director of Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) as he stands in front of a print of the Colosseum in Rome.

"This was something that you brought back with you home to hang it on the wall and show friends and family. It was a mobile medium, and a bit like the internet today. Not as fast but still very fast."

Many artists travelled to find inspiration for new works and sometimes they added themselves to the paintings.

German romanticism painter Karl Friedrich Schinkel, for example, could not resist depicting himself among a group of travellers at the Etna volcano in Italy in 1804.

"The travel artists have always added themselves in the pictures. Like here you have Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who in the early 19th century painted himself in a classic romantic pose - in a kind of travel selfie - with a group of travellers at the Etna volcano in Italy," Dinter explains.

One part of the exhibition deals with forced travels, like the migrants who had to flee danger and turmoil at home.

At the end of the exhibition, modern travel, including voyages to space, is dealt with.

The "We're off then" exhibition at the Kupferstichkabinett runs until September 29.

From New York to Rome and Mexico, a new exhibition in Berlin is focussing on souvenir art and works made while travelling.

More than 100 pictures spanning five centuries of travel are on show at the "We're off then" exhibition at the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings).

STORYLINE:

Summer is approaching in the northern hemisphere, with many people planning a holiday to relax.

For centuries, we've been inspired by foreign lands and cultures.

Before smartphones and cameras, that fascination has led to some picking up a pen or brush to capture the peculiarities of their journey.

Now an exhibition in Berlin has gathered more than 100 prints and pictures showing travelling as art.

The "We're off then" exhibition shows early prints of pilgrims using travel as a way to find enlightenment; pictures of people using boats, trains and automobiles to expand their horizons.

"To travel has always been an important theme for people. It starts with people using their feet to explore the areas around their homes," says Ina Dinter, the curator of the exhibition.

"Travelling is about answering the questions 'where do I belong in the world? Where is home and where is away?'"

The exhibition covers everything from water colour paintings from the German enlightenment period to pop art prints from the last few decades.

Some of the prints were sold to tourists at the locations they depicted as a souvenir, long before Instagram and Facebook.

A new museum focusing on the experiences of "people in exile", is being planned for the German capital Berlin.

It's hoped the museum's home will be a former train station used to deport some of the city's Jewish population during World War Two.         

STORYLINE

The ruins of the Anhalter Bahnhof train station hide an uncomfortable past.

Built in the 1830s, it was once Berlin's largest train station, connecting German cities and European capitals.

Germans began their trips abroad from the platforms of Anhalter Bahnhof.

For visitors, their first glimpse of the country and its capital was from the station's huge and grand reception hall.

But the Second World War changed Anhalter Bahnhof irrevocably.

From 1941, it became a major point from where Jewish people were deported, many to certain death in concentration camps.

The station was destroyed during the Second World War, and the ruins of the front facade is all that stands today.

Now, a project to incorporate the station's remains into a museum focusing on the theme of exile is gathering steam.

The "Museum of Exile" foundation is currently in discussions with the local government for the area of Berlin.

They hope to start building the museum soon, with the aim of opening the doors in 2025.

The proponents of the museum have a powerful ally in 2009 Nobel literature prize winner Herta Mueller (German spelling: Müller).

"The exile was an unbelievable censorship of this country that was organised by the Nazis," says Mueller.

"And it was organised here in Berlin. And because we owe it to the history of this country. And we want to clarify the word "exile." What does it actually mean?"

Berlin had a large Jewish population before the Nazi regime took control - and Adolf Hitler became German Chancellor - in 1933.

Anhalter Bahnhof was one of three stations that were used to transport around 55,000 Berlin Jews in the last four years of the war.

Some of the Jewish population had been able to flee the country in the lead-up to Hitler's final solution; others died in concentration camps.

Many survivors ended up living in exile in other countries after the war ended.

In addition, thousands of political opponents, homosexuals and other minorities like the Roma minority, met the same fate.

Mueller was born in Romania, a part of the German speaking minority in the country.

She escaped the dictatorship and in 1987 moved to West Berlin.

She says her own background as a refugee means the issue of living in exile has always been close to her heart.

"It was something that I always cared about. It is something that I care about because my family comes from the German minority in Romania and Romania was a fascist country, under (former Romanian leader) Antonescu and then Hitler. So this issue of exile was always something I cared about," she says.

The planned museum is also being supported by the Berlin-based art collector Bernd Schultz.

He has donated his entire collection of artworks, including drawings by Picasso, Rembrandt and Menzel to the museum's foundation.

The collection, valued at around five-million euros, will be auctioned to raise funds for the building of the museum.

He says that the pain of parting with the collection is not as big as his desire to see his home-city analyse its history.

"It is a question of priorities. On one hand I feel sad of course, the collection is part of 50 years of a happy life. But on the other hand, my own work and experiences means that I think it is absolutely necessary, in a city like Berlin, to analyse our history."

Berlin is already home to several memorials to those killed in the Holocaust.

The large Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, in the centre of the capital, is hard to miss.

There is also a Jewish museum and a museum dedicated to the terror of the Nazi regime.

But there is no museum dedicated to the people who left the city and ended up living in exile elsewhere.

For Mueller it is a very personal journey.

Her father was a member of the Waffen-SS, the armed wing of the Nazi party and responsible for many of the horrors before and during the war.

"Whether I like it or not, I'm born in to a family of criminals," she says.

"Always, when I read texts about the Nazi era and about the concentration camps, then I always feel like a participant. I don't feel guilty, I didn't do anything, but it is a part of my biography. And that is a responsibility that I can't ignore."

The privately-funded group hope the foundations can be laid in the next few years.

But they want to stress; the museum will not just focus on those who left Berlin in the past.

Syrians for example had become the fourth largest minority in the city by 2017.

The museum foundation has already collected some objects, but it's curator, Cornelia Vossen, says this does not mean the exhibition will be boring.

"We don't have to always put all of the objects in the exhibition. Instead we can really decide how we best explain "exile". How do we make the substance of the word "exile" understandable? We will put the experience of exile in an exhibition. These are all abstract and emotional things and we want to bring new perspectives to the act of being in exile," Vossen explains.

The auction of the Schultz collection, to benefit the Museum of Exile, will take place at Grisebach auction house on October 25 and 26.
