STORYLINE:

Fifty years after East German authorities constructed a wall through the heart of Berlin, only at a few pieces remain of the once formidable barrier that divided the city in two.

Although the former wall is one of Berlin''s biggest tourist draws, the attractions relevant to the structure are far-flung and difficult to find.

It is not only foreign visitors who struggle to figure out where the barrier once stood.

A young generation of Berliners has hardly any reminders of their city''s - and nation''s - once defining barrier.

Michael Cramer, a member of the left-leaning Greens party decided it was important to keep parts of the wall visible as a reminder of the city''s turbulent history.

After campaigning for 10 years, he and his party have established the Berlin Wall Trail, a bicycle path to mark the former strip where the wall once stood.

The Berlin Wall Trail traces the course of the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) border fortifications that encircled West Berlin.

For nearly three decades, the former western enclave in the heart of communist Germany was surrounded by the nearly 160-kilometre (99-mile) barrier.

The bike trail starts in the centre of Berlin, at Potsdamer Platz, formerly a no-mans-land between east and west.

The first stop is only a few metres away - one of five former East German watch towers that still stand today.

More then 300 watch towers were built along the former inner-German border and used to prevent people from escaping the former GDR into the west.

From Potsdamer Platz, the trail leads to another place soaked in the history of the former GDR, and the Nazis before them.

At the place where today the Topography of Terror memorial site now stands, the Nazis tortured people during interrogations at the former Gestapo headquarters.

Right behind it is the house of the ministries where history was written several times.

"It was the former air traffic ministry of the Nazis," says Cramer. "There on June 15th 1961, former GDR leader Walter Ulbricht said ''Nobody has the intension to built a wall''. But here is the wall."

More than 230 people died at the Berlin Wall.

The first was Guenter Liftin on August 24th 1961 and the last Chris Gueffroy on February 6th 1989.

Recently erected columns along the bike path with the names of the victims honour those who died.

City authorities have laid down an eight-kilometre (five-mile) long, double row of cobblestones through the heart of the city to mark the course of the wall.

The entire wall ran some 40 kilometres (25 miles) through the city.

Since 2001, Guenter Warnecke, a 72-year-old Berliner has regularly ridden along the wall trail.

The former engineer was a student in 1961 and remembers the historic day when suddenly his former classmates who lived in the east were no longer around.

"I was was at a sports ground and someone had a radio there where we heard about the construction of the wall," Warnecke recalls. "As a result, I noticed a couple of days later that my fellow students from Teltow, Babelsberg and Potsdam (in the former east) disappeared."

The bike trail runs along the former patrol road used by customs officers in West Berlin, or along the control road used by GDR border troops for their own patrols.

Sections of historic interest, with traces or remains of the old wall, alternate with stretches of natural beauty.

The last section of the inner wall has become famous all over the world as the "East Side Gallery."

Its pictures, painted by various artists in 1990, were carefully restored to their original brightness in 2009.

In recent years, the efforts to preserve the Berlin Wall, including the bike trail, have made it one of the city''s top tourist attractions.

Germans and foreigners alike flock to see pieces of the former barrier to contemplate the lessons it can bring to future generations.

LEADIN

An exhibition showcasing immersive art from the 1960s has opened in the German capital Berlin.

The rooms in the Martin-Gropius Bau museum are filled with flashing lights, red tunnels, smells and even a Japanese teahouse - all to create an immersive experience for the visitor.

STORYLINE

This is an art exhibition like no other.

Instead of oil paintings on a wall there are tunnels illuminated with neon light.

Instead of bronze statues there are entirely white rooms complete with a neon light panel, creating the sense of being in a haze.

And if you sit down on the benches, they will start moving.

The exhibition is called "Welt Ohne Außen" - it can be translated as "A World Without an Outside."

The exhibition - held at the Martin-Gropius Bau museum in the German capital Berlin - shows "Immersive Art" from the 1960's.

The whole idea is to immerse the visitor in a new experience.

One area of performances, experiences and workshops is curated by Isabel Lewis, an Dominican Republic-American artist that currently lives in Berlin.

She has set up one room as a Japanese Teahouse.

Visitors can simply sit down, relax and have different teas served to them by a tea expert.

In the background music is playing, the walls are decorated with Japanese art.

"For me, this aspect, this part of the exhibition is about engagement and embodiment and activation of the senses," says Lewis.

"So the first place to do that is exactly here in the tea room where your sense of smell is adressed, your sense of taste is addressed, there is a haptic feeling to the table. It is very special. So all of those aspects of the room adress the multiple senses."

The exhibition has 12 rooms with art ranging from the early 1960s until today.

Curator Annika Kuhlmann says it can be seen as a maze of experience rather than a traditional exhibition.

"Basically we are merging two formats. We are taking the very traditional format of the exhibition that presents artworks in distinct spaces between white walls, thereby turning an objet in to an artwork, and we are now taking that and we are introducing situations in to it," she says.

"And these situations kind of align next to another, together forming an experience. An experience that will be new and unexpected in this kind of space and environment."

In one room large mirrors and windows have been set up to create a small maze.

The artwork, called "6 x 8: An Improvisation" by American artist Larry Bell, creates an outer-bodily sense.

Artistic director Thohmas Oberender says the exhibition is trying to rewrite the rules of what museum visits are like.

"If we were to compare the exhibition to a football game. Then we can say that a football game is pretty much always the same," he says.

"What makes a difference is that are different players. But the rules are always the same. What the exhibition "World Without Outside" does is that it changes the rules. And some players are the same, but many are entirely new."

While most of the works immerse the visitor in a pleasant feeling the room with the artwork "Light Wall" by Stockholm-based Carsten Hoeller, can create a sense of nausea.

One of the walls has been covered with 1920 lightbulbs that are flashing to the beat of a loud signal.

It is extremely disorienting.

However, curator Tino Sehgal, says the exhibition should just not be seen as an experience, but also as a showcase of immersive art since the 1960s.

"Immersion is not something new kind of notion, it is what artists have been busy with since the 60s," he says.

The exhibition Welt Ohne Außen opens to the public on June 8 and runs through August 5.

Royal excitement is building in Berlin as Britain's Prince William and Princess Catherine, with their children George and Charlotte, are set to arrive on Wednesday (19 July).

Children at a social centre in the east of the capital are busy with a special British tradition: making Union Jack bunting to make the Royals feel welcome.

STORYLINE

The children at the "Youth house Bolle," a social centre for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the east of Berlin, are working hard.

They are printing Union Jack flags and hanging them on strings to make bunting - a very British way to get ready for a party.

Germany does not have its own royal household, but on Wednesday Price William and Princess Catherine - also known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - will visit the centre on their first day in the German capital.

They might even bring their children George and Charlotte with them.

The children at Bolle House have been learning about the United Kingdom to prepare for the visit.

Ten-year-old Dean Vorpahl lets everyone know that he knows the colours of the Union Jack flag.

"We make bands with English flags. We have also bands around our wrists with the English colors: white, red and blue," he says.

Around 100 children, from young school children to teenagers, visit the centre each week.

The district is one of the poorest in the German capital, and most of the children in the centre come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

At the centre they get healthy food, can do their homework and of course play.

But on Wednesday there will be no homework, the children are going to show their flags and enjoy the commotion that comes with a celebrity visit.

"On Wednesday Prince William will come with his Duchess Kate to the youth Club Bolle," says Vorpahl.

"There are going to be a lot of police here. And lots of people doing interviews with cameras."

The children have watched videos from the Royal wedding in 2011.

They have also tried to learn a bit of English.

"Many of them are really excited. It is something big when a real prince comes. It is really great," says Stefanie Milios who works at the centre.

Youth house Bolle was founded in 2010 and is a part of an organisation called "Strassenkinder" which translates to "street children."

It is a place for the children to spend their afternoons after school before returning to their homes.

Youth house Bolle runs on donations, and a royal visit can help with fundraising, says Eckhard Baumann who founded the centre.

"First of all, we are thinking that maybe the children will be motivated to learn a bit of English. If they get to know this country a bit and learn a bit of English then it would be a success," he says

"But of course it would also be really great if the public would notice us a bit."

The Royal Family will arrive in Berlin on Wednesday morning.

Prince William will start the day by holding talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Then the Duke and Duchess will visit the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust memorial, in the centre of the capital.

The memorial was built in 2004 and consists of 2711 individual concrete slabs arranged in rows.

The memorial commemorates the millions of Jewish people that were murdered by the National Socialist regime of Adolf Hitler before and during the Second World War.

There are other memorials for other targeted groups in the city, but this one is fully focused on the murdered Jews.

Architect Peter Eisenmann designed the memorial to be open, and without information texts and pictures.

"It is a space for free associations," says Adam Kerpel-Fronius, project leader for 'European sites of remembrance'

"That means that you enter the memorial and you can let the memorial make an impression on you."

The memorial is one of most visited tourist sites in Berlin.

The ground is slanted, so when the visitors reach the centre of the memorial, the surrounding world slowly disappears.

"Many people feel lost in the memorial," says Kerpel-Fronius

"They feel like they can't find a way out. Other people think that because the rows are relatively straight, and you can always see the exits and that life continues outside with the noise of the city, they start thinking about how they are her in 2017 and about what the Holocaust has to do with us now."

The Royal family will also visit Brandenburg Gate on Wednesday.

The 18th-century neoclassical gate is one of the best know landmarks in Germany.

Here Prince William and Princess Catherine will "greet the crowds that will have gathered at the gate," according to a press release by Clarence House.

The royal trip started on July 17 in Poland where the family visited Warsaw, the former Nazi concentration camp Stutthof, and Gdansk.

After the visit to Berlin, the Royal family will visit the German cities of Heidelberg and Hamburg before returning to London on July 21.

STORYLINE:

Curator Ken Gross had his first encounter with Porsches in college, when the cool guys were driving Super 90 Coupes. His old Ford, which was fine for attracting girls in high school, didn't compare.

He bought a 1961 Super 90 Coupe after graduate school in 1966, then sold it before he went to Vietnam in the U.S. Navy. Although he hasn't owned another one since, he has found a job that makes for a fine consolation prize - curating museum shows that include Porsches, such as the one that opens Saturday at the North Carlina Museum of Art.

This show is different from other car exhibits that Gross has curated because it's the first one he's done that focuses only on Porsches. The show has 22 of the German-made cars, starting with a 1938 Type 64 Berlin-Rom Racer and including actor Steve McQueen's 1958 Speedster and Janis Joplin's psychedelically painted 1965 Type 356C Cabriolet that's usually at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The exhibit, titled "Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed, runs through Jan. 20, 2014.

ROYAL WEDDING ATTRACTS FOREIGN VISITORS IN LARGE NUMBERS

The British capital is witnessing a boom in tourism ahead of Friday's royal wedding.

Some London landmarks are reporting swelling numbers of international visitors, many of whom say they're here primarily because of Prince William and Kate Middleton's 29 April nuptials.

Tourists were flocking to the Tower of London on Tuesday (26 April).

The iconic landmark by the River Thames, with its 900 years of royal history, is a regular stop on the tourist trail.

But numbers are definitely up, according to officials.

For the week beginning 18 April, it recorded its highest weekly number of visitors in 12 years - some 91,000.

And visitors have topped 13,000 on a single day on four separate occasions over the past week - a feat normally only achieved twice in a whole year.

One group of five American women confirmed it was the royal wedding which had drawn them over to the UK.

Excitedly visiting as many landmarks with royal connections as they could during their stay, the women had certainly dressed for the part.

They wore matching red hats, complete with American flags, and identical red outfits.

Each also sported on their finger a copy of Kate Middleton's engagement ring, which originally belonged to William's mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

Twin sisters Marcia Anderson, from Oklahoma City, and Mary Boepple (pronounced "bep-lay"), from Cyprus, Texas, were enjoying their fourth visit to London.

But it was the wedding which brought them back again this time, they said.

"London's just a great city. Great history - obviously the Tower and everything here. But then to have the royals and to be able to come and see royal things...." Anderson enthused.

John Keohane is Chief Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London.

He heads a team responsible for the security of the Crown Jewels, which the Tower has housed since 1303.

They also act as Tower tour guides - and have been run off their feet with the extra visitors numbers in recent days, according to Keohane.

Keohane said he felt sure the royal wedding was responsible for the increased numbers.

"There's so much tradition and this is what I think - especially our visitors from the United States or (elsewhere) abroad - come here to see. They want to come and see all what the British monarchy is all about and why it's so important to all of us that live here in this great country," he said.

Tower authorities were pleased with the increased visitor numbers, which they said would help them maintain the landmark, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Not all visitors admitted to being here solely for the wedding, however.

"We hadn't planned to come here for the royal wedding and it's a coincidence that it's happening while we're here," said German tourist Jonathan Soenenan, who was visiting the UK from Berlin with his sister.

However, he added: "I might go down on the day and wave at the royal couple!"

Italian tourist Massimo Caneva, from Treviso in northern Italy, said the fascination with all things royal was a stimulus for his two young children.

"It's fun for the children, especially to see the crown jewels, as well as other things connected to queens and kings, and so they're having a great time," he said.

Jacqueline French, a spokesperson for London and Partners, the official promotional agency for the British capital, said the royal wedding had undoubtedly been a major draw.

She said her agency was expecting around 600,000 visitors to come to London specifically for the royal wedding, a figure based on the numbers who had travelled 30 years ago to witness the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

The wedding would act as a beacon for tourists for the year ahead, she added.

"What we are hoping is that the royal wedding will help put a spotlight on London. There's an approximate four (b) billion people will be watching the wedding overseas. We've got the queen's jubilee next year, as well as the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. And all of this will create a sense of fun and great atmosphere in London that hopefully people will want to be a part of," French explained.

Looking ahead to Friday's wedding, French said that visitors would want to be able to tell friends and family that they here in London on the big day, as it was an historical event.

Not all visitors admitted to being here solely for the wedding, however.

"We hadn't planned to come here for the royal wedding and it's a coincidence that it's happening while we're here," said German tourist Jonathan Soenenan, who was visiting the UK from Berlin with his sister.

However, he added: "I might go down on the day and wave at the royal couple!"

Italian tourist Massimo Caneva, from Treviso in northern Italy, said the fascination with all things royal was a stimulus for his two young children.

"It's fun for the children, especially to see the crown jewels, as well as other things connected to queens and kings, and so they're having a great time," he said.

Jacqueline French, a spokesperson for London and Partners, the official promotional agency for the British capital, said the royal wedding had undoubtedly been a major draw.

She said her agency was expecting around 600,000 visitors to come to London specifically for the royal wedding, a figure based on the numbers who had travelled 30 years ago to witness the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

The wedding would act as a beacon for tourists for the year ahead, she added.

"What we are hoping is that the royal wedding will help put a spotlight on London. There's an approximate four (b) billion people will be watching the wedding overseas. We've got the queen's jubilee next year, as well as the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. And all of this will create a sense of fun and great atmosphere in London that hopefully people will want to be a part of," French explained.

Looking ahead to Friday's wedding, French said that visitors would want to be able to tell friends and family that they here in London on the big day, as it was an historical event.

Obituaries: Ronald Reagan

In June, the former US president Ronald Reagan died in California after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, aged 93. Five years after leaving office, the nation's 40th president told the world in November 1994 that he had been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's, an incurable illness that destroys brain cells. He said he had begun "the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life." At the age of 69, Reagan, a former movie star and Governor of California, was the oldest man ever elected president when he was beat the incumbent president Jimmy Carter in 1980. Four years later he was re-elected by an even greater margin, carrying 49 of the 50 states. Reagan was accorded a full formal funeral, lying in state in at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington DC, where world leaders visited to pay their respects. Among the mourners was the former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, whose dealing with President Reagan over arms control led to the break up of the Soviet Union. After lying in state, the body of the former president was interred in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

Obituaries: Peter Ustinov

Sir Peter Ustinov, the Oscar-winning actor who had earned a reputation for his humanitarian work at the UN, died in Switzerland in March at the age of 82, from heart failure. Born in London on April 16, 1921, the only son of a Russian artist mother and a journalist father, Ustinov claimed also to have Swiss, Ethiopian, Italian and French blood. In a career lasting some 60 years, Ustinov appeared in roles ranging from Emperor Nero to Agatha Christie's Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. He won Academy Awards for supporting actor in the films ''Spartacus'' and ''Topkapi'' in the 1960s. Ustinov faced criticism in the early 1990s for his controversial views on the emergence of Russia from Communist rule, and for his unstinting support for Mikhail Gorbachev. His long service as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF led UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to joke that Ustinov was the man to take over from him. Ustinov's son, Igor, said his father had viewed his mortality with humour - when asked what he would like to see inscribed on his tombstone, Ustinov had replied: "Keep off the grass."

Obituaries: Henri Cartier-Bresson

In August the legendary French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson died in southeastern France at the age of 95. Cartier-Bresson's work had inspired generations of photographers. He was declared a French national treasure, although he was famously averse to having his own picture taken or to giving interviews. Whether recording the funeral of Mahatma Gandhi in India or Henri Matisse at home, Cartier-Bresson sought to render the feeling of the moment with his distinctive classical style and penchant for geometrical composition. "In whatever one does, there must be a relationship between the eye and the heart," he once said in a rare interview. "With the one eye that is closed, one looks within, with the other eye that is open, one looks without." While most of his international fame was generated from worldwide exhibitions and glossy high-profile magazines, Cartier-Bresson gained recognition from two documentary films he made about medical aid to Republican loyalists fighting Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, and about French prisoners of war returning home at the end of World War II.

Obituaries: Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve, the star of the "Superman" films whose near-fatal riding accident in 1995 turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died of heart failure October, aged 52. Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound, a common complication for people living with paralysis, when he slipped into a coma and died, hospital sources said. Reeve broke his neck in May 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. Enduring months of therapy to allow him to breathe for longer and longer periods without a respirator, Reeve emerged to lobby Congress for better insurance protection against catastrophic injury and to move an Academy Award audience to tears with a call for more films about social issues. Reeve's athletic, 6-foot-4-inch (1.93-meter) frame and love of adventure made him a natural, if largely unknown, choice for the title role in the first "Superman" film in 1978. Although he reprised the role three times, Reeve often worried about being typecast as an action hero. And though he owed his fame to it, Reeve made a concerted effort to, as he often put it, "escape the cape."

The Olympic Flame for the 2004 games in Athens was at the site of ancient Olympia in March, in a ceremony evoking Greek religious rites. The burning torch was carried by a total of 3600 people in 27 countries as it was transported around the world in the lead-up to the games. As the date of the games approached, there were concerns about the preparedness of the Olympic facilities in Athens. But the games opened on schedule in August in a lavish ceremony evoking thousands of years of Greek culture.

The US Olympic team suspended sprinter Torri Edwards for testing positive for the banned stimulant nikethamide. Edwards had been expected to compete with a strong chance in the 100 metres and 200 metres races. More than 20 weightlifters from several countries were suspended for flunking drug tests they took before the Olympics. The news was welcomed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which said that such systematic pre-Games testing helped in the fight against doping. The Greek weightlifter Leonidas Sampanis was stripped of his bronze medal expelled from the Olympics, the first athlete at the Athens Games to lose a medal because of a failed drug test. The Hungarian hammer throw champion, Adrian Annus, was stripped of his gold medal for failing to take a follow-up drug test, although he had passed a drug test immediately after winning the medal on 22 August.
